Editorial

The enduring spirit of GITEX GITEX continues to evolve and defy the challenges that other global expos have faced. The 31st edition of the showcase event is expected to be bigger than in the previous years with more exhibitor participation and visitor footfall.

...continued from pg 1...

Over 130,000 visitors are expected to come in from 59 countries who will witness kiosks and displays by more than 3,500 technology and internet companies. The event continues to address the need for a convenient one window view of some of the new technologies and products. There has been a renewed interest from participating exhibitors as they further realize the utility of effectively using GITEX to broadcast their message loudly to the growing MEA market.

Cloud computing has made further advance over the year and we are likely to see major vendors emphasize cloud versions of some existing solutions in security, storage etc that are ready to be deployed. It is indeed an opportunity to demystify the cloud for potential users as Symantec aims to at this edition of GITEX. There are exciting networking products like Sitecom’s range of access points that offer cloud based security at the gateway, NAS devices offering cloud based backups, better performing Notebooks based on second generation Intel core processors, LED monitor displays, tablets from several manufacturers and more. It promises to be another hectic technology week for stakeholders in the region’s IT market place and gives them the opportunity to create further momentum in generating customer leads and potential partner recruitments. At the end of the day, the event retains its enduring appeal in the industry’s annual calendar.

Belkin’s distribution partnership with Jumbo is part of an overall strategy to expand in the Middle East. Belkin plans further growth in 2011 by investing in marketing, channel development and growing product offerings in a variety of markets. Looking at the success of its AVARDZ loyalty program in the GCC region, Golden Systems Middle East has decided to extend this popular program to partners in other Middle East countries as well. The AVARDZ program, which was launched in 2010, is Golden Systems’ flexible online loyalty program created and designed exclusively for qualified individuals from the IT retail industry who support, promote and distribute the company’s selected portfolio of products directly to end-users in the market. AVARDZ rewards its members by offering them a variety of exclusive benefits and privileges.

Chantelle Tavid Reginal Director, AVARDZ.

“We believe that our partners should be recognized and appreciated based on their level of support and loyalty and for that reason we created AVARDZ last year. Our mission was to continually evolve and incorporate additional value-added benefits and features to the AVARDZ program to ensure the highest level of member satisfaction. Our partners benefited hugely from this program, which led to more business for our company. Going by its success in the GCC region, we felt we should extend this program to our channel network in other countries as well,” says Chantelle Tavid, Regional Director, AVARDZ. Golden Systems developed and implemented AVARDZ as an online customer loyalty portal to reward the channel for its loyalty. Since the software infrastructure was in-house, it was able to create a scalable system with multiple languages to support the needs of its ethnically diverse channel. The AVARDZ flexible online program enables members to view their transactions and statements, register products, earn and redeem points, participate in promotions and competitions, gain product knowledge and receive the latest technology information. The program features an easy-to-use online interface and a comprehensive rewards program with a wide range of easily achievable rewards. To participate in the AVARDZ program, an individual has to be a sales person employed by an IT store or a shop owner that sells AVARDZ eligible products directly to end users. Kaspersky Lab

Taking stock switch from PC to mobiles, tablets, smart phones etc. It will be a pervasive mobile environment soon and simultaneously we will also start focusing more. There are going to be serious changes in consumer environment because the mobile market is quite different from the computer market. How do you see channel opportunities change, grow or decline? The B2C channels would be transformed into providers of more services from their product distribution roles. Consumers are extending from the PCs to tablets and smartphones. As they are different markets ( computers vis-à-vis mobiles), we appreciate the difference and follow the trends. These trends are defined by manufacturers, service providers, and mobile operators. So we are catering to changes in our business models for the new environment. We are strong in the computer consumer segment and we are not going to move our focus from there because it is still a very big market and growing.

Eugene Kaspersky CEO, Kaspersky Lab

Eugene Kaspersky is the CEO of Kaspersky Lab, the eponymous company he co-founded. Also widely reckoned as a global expert on Information Security, his vision for the company takes stock of changing realities in the market. In this interview, the CEO of Kaspersky Labs elaborates on some of the key trends in the markets as well as focus areas of the company

Is Kaspersky largely an endpoint security products manufacturer? We are not just an end point security company. We offer different products in the IT security sector. As an IT security company, we are providing end-point security, gate way security and cloud security services. Our main focus at present is on end-point consumer end and B2B end products. We have excellent consumer products and market acceptance of this fact. We also offer very good enterprise products, which we want to become excellent. Once we become recognized players in the B2B security business, we will move to other segments. While keeping our focus on existing technologies and products that we offer, we will move to the new ones. Are you happy with the pace at which the enterprise business is growing for Kaspersky? It is growing and our existing customers are happy with us. However, the enterprise segment is quite conservative. It takes years to get into some accounts. They know us, they like us and they want to change but it is too expensive to migrate from product to product which is the unfortunate reality. we will contigue to enagage them. How significant is mobile security now? Mobile security will be the most important issue in few years because in home environments users will

In the enterprise segment, there is no enterprise security right out of the box. You can’t click the button and then load the security service from the box. The environment could be different, could be a different architecture as well and the processes would be different. So there’s a role for customization for different security issues on a particular network. This is a definite role for our partners and we don’t have any plans for change that. Our partners are a community and we are living in the midst of this community. More friends will bring on more success. How closer is the company to being among the top three security software vendors? The plan was to be number 3 by 2010. The reality is that we partly achieved it. We are number 3 in the consumer business and number 4 in B2B. We are growing fast and doing better than our main competitors and have very good chances of reaching our target. We have good engineers, IGS, innovations, strong team, and strong partners. Do you see brand acceptance and loyalty growing fast for Kaspersky in the region? Brand royalty is growing and different in different countries. In some markets like Russia, it is almost 100%. There is a very strong Brand awareness in Europe, and it is growing in USA and the Middle East too. We have seen a growth in brand awareness in UAE, Turkey and Saudi Arabia not just as a known brand but as a brand that customers are able to trust their security and their information with. In this market channels play the role more than the price. Our resellers or the channel compete for the best price of this product but they don’t compare the price with our competitors. When customers look for security products, they look for services and the brand but not pricing. They really value our presence in the region. In order to reach a wider cross section of customers, we have ongoing special promotions, incentives for customers etc. Pricing is not a critical issue in IT security because frankly, it is not so expensive. In IT security, trust and the company reputation is most critical.

HP showcases cloud for the instant on enterprise HP is set to focus on Cloud for The Instant On Enterprise at Gitex. HP's dedication to Cloud Computing and the company's innovation in creating Instant-On Enterprises will form the core of HP's Gitex presence. In addition, with enterprises interested in the flexibility and agility that cloud computing provides, but still harbouring initial concerns around security of cloud, HP is also demonstrating its expanded Enterprise Security Solutions portfolio.

Eyad Shihabi Managing Director, HP Middle East

HP is once again backing Gitex with a large presence and support of key events such as the Cloud Confex as part of its commitment to innovation in technology. As diamond sponsor of the Gitex Cloud Confex, HP demonstrates its continuous support of developing the future of cloud-based technology, with Steve Dietch, VP Marketing, HP Cloud Computing, delivering the key note speech. In addition, HP will be hosting cloud workshops on its stand, delivering ways in which HP is the strategic partner that can help enterprises take the next steps in their journey to the cloud. The services used to do this which are on show at Gitex include HP CloudSystem, HP Enterprise Cloud Services-Compute and HP Cloud Service Automation. "Gitex acts as a gateway to reaching the region's ICT market. This year we have invested significantly in showcasing the latest enterprise services that focus on the cloud, Instant On and security solutions we offer," said Eyad Shihabi, Managing Director, HP Middle East. As part of HP's Gitex activities, it will also be hosting the HP Channel Awards, where companies will be recognized for successes and hard work across all areas of business in the technology sector.

Golden Systems participation gets bigger at GITEX Golden Systems Middle East (GSME) is planning to participate in Gitex in a much bigger way this year. The company has planned a number of events to mark the occasion including hosting its annual traditional gala dinner for its customers and partners on October 12, 2011 at the Emirates Towers Hotel. Historically, this annual dinner hosts over 400 channel partners and rewards the partners for their ongoing loyalty and dedication. Golden Systems plans to use Gitex to promote latest products from its vendor-partners as well as holding a series of meetings with customers and partners at the Emirates Towers Hotel. "This year is a very special year for Golden Systems as we complete 15 successful years in business in this region. We have every reason to celebrate as our business has grown significantly year after year thanks to the solid support and backing that we have received from our customers and partners. In the last two years, we have not only expanded our business across the region but have also managed to strengthen our portfolio by signing up with only the top five best vendors. This Gitex, we want to share our joy with our vendors, channel and customers," says Ehsan Hashemi, COO, Golden Systems Middle East.

Al Otaiba and Sitecom launch wireless router offering cloudbased internet security

Logicom successfully hosts Technology Forum Logicom, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary of operations in (KW,QA,OM,PK,AF,BH,UAE,YE) Middle East this year, held its Technology Forum in AUH recently with several of its top vendors participating. The event is regularly conducted on an annual monthly basis around the globe by Logicom. Adobe, Cisco, HP, Intel, Microsoft and Watchguard were among the vendors who were participating at the show. Over 100 partners of Logicom attended the event and made it a successful show of strength for the distributor. Logicom has continued to show consistent growth, working hand in hand with its partners.

Al Otaiba Communications launched Sitecom Cloud Security, a unique security solution that protects all devices in a home network against cybercrime and online threats when browsing the internet. Sitecom Cloud Security joins a list of premiumquality IT products being launched by Al Otaiba Communications to cater to the needs of UAE consumers. With internet adoption continuing to rise in the UAE, reaching 75 per cent of the population as of 2010, Sitecom Cloud Security particularly addresses the growing need to protect families against internet threats such as viruses, trojans, worms, spams, spywares, malwares, adwares, phishing and identity theft. Khalaf Bin Saif Al Otaiba, Group CEO at Al Otaiba Group of Companies, said: “The launch of Sitecom Cloud Security reaffirms the continuing commitment of Al Otaiba Communications to deliver world-class IT solutions that create true value for UAE consumers. With this cutting-edge router, Sitecom Cloud Security adds a new layer of protection against cyber crime and other internet threats, giving families genuine peace of mind while surfing the internet. Al Otaiba Communications will continue to deliver state-of-the-art products and IT solutions from leading global brands that cater to the specific needs of UAE consumers.” Sjors Hendriks, Chief Sales Officer at Sitecom Europe BV, said: “The UAE offers huge growth potential for Sitecom Cloud Security because of the immense internet adoption in the country and the growing awareness about internet threats and cyber-crimes. We are pleased to have Al Otaiba Communications as the exclusive distributor of Sitecom Cloud Security, which gives the product instant access to our target audiences across the UAE through its comprehensive partner network. We are looking forward to leverage our strategic partnership with Al Otaiba Communications to introduce more innovative products in the UAE.” Sitecom Cloud Security is integrated in the new Pure E-motion | X-series 2.0 Gigabit Wireless Routers and Modem Wireless Routers

offering built-in cloud-based protection against internet threats and cyber-crimes for home users. Once Sitecom Cloud Security is activated, the router works together with Sitecom’s powerful servers positioned in various locations throughout the internet to offer maximum level of protection for home users. Sitecom Cloud Security consists of four options that offer protection when browsing the internet using any device connected to a home network such as notebooks, desktop computers, tablets, smartphones games consoles, media players, TVs and Blue-ray players. Antivirus / Antimalware protects users from harmful, unwanted software, which has the intention of causing damage to the user's computer, interrupting the normal operation of the computer or violating the user's privacy; Antiphishing protects against cybercriminals attempting to get hold of personal details such as credit cards, via fake e-mails and websites; URL Blocking protects against malicious websites by automatically giving a warning when a user wants to access a website that contains malware; and Ad Blocking, which blocks unsolicited advertisements. Sitecom Cloud Security does not require any special software for users to be protected, making it a genuinely user-friendly internet security solution. The software runs on the servers and is always up-to-date, so users do not have to install updates by themselves. “Sitecom Cloud Security is not a replacement for antivirus software, but rather provides complementary features that ensure total home network protection and act as first line of defence. An up-to-date virus scanner is necessary to safely download files from offline devices such as a USB stick. It also protects against internet risks found on secure internet pages, as well as FTP and P2P connections such as BitTorrent. So while a virus scanner ensures that the house is safely locked, Sitecom Cloud Security expands the range of protection by locking the garden gate,” concluded Al Otaiba. Moreover, all Sitecom range of wireless routers are covered by 10 years of real warranty and complimentary free home installation.

ComGuard

Info Security gets the momentum Is the opportunity significant for the channel in the Information Security business? That is right and which is why many more new partners are joining us. Due to the significant growth of Security Market , more partners are gradually trying to move their focus from other segments to security. What are the challenges in the market? One of the challenges is the budgetary constraint. What we now see is that as the demand increases, they now believe that they need the solutions but they do not have enough budget to spend. Would you describe yourself as an end to end security solutions distributor? We are and end to end security solutions distributor. If you look at our brands list, you will understand that we have solutions for all segments and all security concerns. Rarely you will see conflict of interest so our product somehow will complement each other.

Mohammed Mobbasseri Sr. Vice President, ComGuard ComGuard FZ LLC continues to consolidate its position as one of the leading value added distributors of IT security products across Middle East and North Africa. Mohammad Mobbasseri, Sr Vice President at the distributor discusses the state of the IT Security focused channel as well as the favourable trends for the Business of Security in a discussion with VAR Magazine

Do you offer any cloud based security solutions as well? We soon will start GFI cloud solutions and are in negotiations with some security vendors for the areas that we currently do not have any products. Are there sufficient number of resellers with the requisite expertise focusing on the security solutions market? Unfortunately there is a shortage of resellers focusing in high end security. When it gets into the domain of higher technology and longer sales cycles, you will not find too many resellers capable of fulfilling the expectations of that domain but we are trying to help more reseller to be able to achieve this goal by providing additional value services like training , workshops, etc.

Jacky's Electronics sees Ultrabooks taking the spotlight at Gitex Shopper 2011 A new product segment, Ultrabook, is expected to create hype and be among the best-selling products along with tablets and smartphone at this year's Gitex Shopper, according to Jacky's Electronics, the UAE's leading multi-brand consumer electronics retailer. The company said that Ultrabook, the thinner and slimmer version of notebooks, will be one of the main product highlights with major brands, such as Acer and Lenovo, introducing their own Ultrabook lines at the show. "The Ultrabook is an ultra-slim laptop running on the latest generation Intel processor that maxes out at 0.8 inches thick. With Ultrabook being available at Gitex Shopper means major brands will have a product that will rival Apple's MacBook Air," said Ashish Panjabi, Chief Operating Officer, Jacky's Electronics. While laptops, tablets and smartphones were a runaway success at last year's event, Jacky's predicts that the same product segments will still be considered 'blockbusters' at Gitex Shopper. The digital SLR cameras will also see a surge in sales as this segment has been growing rapidly in the past months. "Other product highlights will be Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Apple iPad 2. Meanwhile, in the smartphone category, BlackBerry will focus on three new devices - Bold 9900, Torch 9810 and the all-touchscreen Torch 9860; HTC will have HTC Sensation, the first smartphone that incorporates the recently acquired technology from Beats Audio; and Nokia's launch of N9, its next generation smartphones," Panjabi added. Adobe

Effective execution Adobe has successfully restructured its distribution channel and is seeing the results it expected from growing sales in the region. Abdallah Saqqa, General Manager of Adobe Middle East speaks about the successful realignment as well as the deeper customer engagement strategies in the following interview

Microsoft Hardware announced a number of offers will be available on its top-selling range products at this year's Gitex technology week. The products - ranging from web cams, mice and keyboards - will be sold by various retailers at Gitex Shopper 2011, scheduled to take place between October 8 and 15 at the Airport Expo Dubai. Merthan Kaleli, Retail Sales & Marketing Lead, Microsoft Gulf says, "As we have witnessed in previous years, Microsoft Hardware products are very popular with consumers during Gitex shopper events, and we are very excited to announce the new range of innovative accessories available this year. Thanks to the number of deals available, we are certain there will be something to suit every consumer's needs. We look forward to Gitex 2011."

How would you summarise the current scenario in terms of customer sentiment and their readiness to spend? While the slowdown in the region has not been as much felt as in other parts of the world, we are part of the overall global economical challenges and not immune to it. It puts pressure on the customer side to think and prioritize investments. Everything is linked together and finally affects the channel as it is the gateway to customers, sometimes to other channels, sometimes to niche markets etc.

Microsoft's range of mice and keyboards are packed with style, comfort and quality to enhance the way users work or play. Two of Microsoft's most popular mice, the ARC Touch Mouse and Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 will be available at Gitex Shopper 2011.

We see strong potential as well as challenge on the customer side in terms of spending. The sales cycle is now longer because budgets are shrinking. The key differentiator is the value preposition. Once the customer realizes the value we are trying to propose, definitely the seller will get some priority. Discuss some defining features of your go-to market strategy The first step for our Go-to market strategy was to redesign the channel strategy. Earlier, there was a lack of a proper model of support for the market from the channel prospective. However, when the vendor is not present on the ground, one cannot expect more from the channel. Once we established the office here, we wanted to change the go-to market strategy in phases without affecting or shaking the channel a lot. Our first step was to introduce few distributors across the region to have better coverage. In the beginning we had only one distributor actively covering the ME region. The focus on markets outside the UAE wasn’t pro-active. According to my team’s assessment and mine as well, this was wrong because we were doing justification to a broad region like Middle East with this approach. The products were promoting themselves when demand was already there in better times when customers didn’t need to prioritise spending. But this approach couldn’t work now since there is a need to tap all opportunities proactively and we therefore needed a completely restructuring of the distribution. What were the realignment strategies? Our first step was a complete assessment of the currently working distributors and decided to continue to work with one of them and replace the other. We had given both them a chance to work

Redington hosts awards night Redington hosted its vendor and channel partners at the annual awards night held at the Intercontinental hotel in Dubai recently. Over 300 delegates from both its extensive vendor network as well as its retail and reseller partners attended the Gala evening.

Abdallah Saqqa General Manager, Adobe Middle East two quarters with us and respond. One distributor responded favourably to this change and the other did not. We exited the relationship with the distributor who didn’t respond. We introduced two new distributor tie-ups. We appointed Mindware for distribution in Saudi Arabia and Logicom for the the rest of the region. We worked with the other distributor for 2 to 3 quarters more and then introduced the fourth one in Saudi Arabia last June. That was Al Falak. We reached out to the channel directly during these changes because we did not want the channel to disturbed while introducing the changes. Has this been effective for your customer segments? Customers and resellers were taken care of at the same time. The Media segment has been a key priority to us as were the Government and Education. We did not ignore the private sector. In customer prospective we kept a direct touch with all three above. Media was given the top priority because they were our major users. The results so far have been very good and we really proved that this change was needed. For SMB segment, our channel was to cover this for us directly and we would support the channel completely.

Cisco expands presence at GITEX 2011 Under the theme ‘Within, between and beyond the Cloud’, Cisco will be showcasing its innovations with a main focus on Cloud, that will increase value to customers, create new business opportunities for partners and drive technology advances in the region. Cisco will examine the most current and critical trends and issues facing the Cloud and Virtualization landscape, and how Cisco is different with utilizing the network as the fundamental foundation that interconnects the world of many clouds . Chris Dedicoat, Cisco’s newly-appointed President, for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), will deliver a keynote that will focus on “Innovating Technology through Creative Leadership” at the GITEX Global Leaders’ Summit. In addition, Den Sullivan, Enterprise Architecture director , Cisco Emerging Markets will discuss “The Drive Towards Governance, Regulation and Compliance of Core Cloud” at GITEX Cloud Confex 2011. “Cisco’s ability to innovate is why customers rely on us as a strategic business partner rather than merely a product technology vendor,” said Wayne Hull, director and general manager, Cisco UAE. “Our aim is to leverage GITEX Technology Week as a platform to showcase our product innovation, whereby customers and partners will have the opportunity to explore how the network has become the most strategic IT asset today.” Cisco’s stand will be located at the Zabeel Hall, GulfComms, stand number Z-B, 30.

Awards were given away to top performing vendors as well as partners in different categories. Redington has continued to grow its business year on year and is reckoned to be consistently among the top three IT distributors in the region. In his keynote presentation at the event, Raj Shankar, MD, Redington Gulf noted that the company has see its overall volumes in 2011 grow despite challenges. Redington as a group has also seen its market capitalization also grow significantly at the BSE. In recent years, the distributor has strengthened its Value Business while continuing to consolidate its volume Business as well. The key attributes of the company’s sustained success has been the best practices and the high standards it sets.

NETGEAR launches N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router with new Clear Channel Selector technology users are bound to see over 12 WiFi signals simultaneously, but with the need to connect to only one of these 12 channels. The N600 Premium Edition brings a new level of sophistication to home networks with a unique channel selector feature that will allow users to choose what WiFi channel to connect to,” said Ahmed Zeidan, Channel Sales Manager, NETGEAR Middle East. “In addition, the unprecedented feature set of this advanced router makes wireless connections more reliable, breaks down the barriers for file-sharing in the cloud and much more - yet it’s easy to set up and manage. This is the future of home networking and its here today.”

Ahmed Zeidan Channel Sales Manager, NETGEAR NETGEAR, a leading provider of technologically advanced, branded networking and storage products, has announced the Middle East launch of the N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router - Premium Edition (WNDR3800), a ‘first of its kind’ home router that offers a ‘Clear Channel Selector’ and that can create private cloud file sharing via the ReadySHARE cloud service. The new device is being offered as the perfect home router complement, ably helping users avoiding clogged WiFi channels and giving them the advantage of easy and secure access to personal files anywhere. The Clear Channel Selector, which was previously available only in more costly wireless routers for businesses, has now been added to NETGEAR’s latest home router model, which automatically detects when the WiFi channel currently in use becomes overcrowded and switches to another less-crowded channel. According to NETGEAR executives, WiFi overcrowding has become a growing problem as WiFi access points continue to increase, resulting in more competition for WiFi frequencies from household devices like microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors and from neighbours. Clear Channel Selector creates a more reliable home WiFi network by greatly reducing sudden disconnects and slowdowns, especially important for demanding applications such as HD video streaming, multi-player gaming and online voice or video chats. "Home users in the Middle East region live in highly urbanized settings like closely built houses in neighbourhoods usually made up of high rise buildings. In living conditions like these,

The ReadySHARE cloud transforms any USB Hard Drive or Flash Drive into a private cloud storage when plugged into the N600 Premium Edition. This allows for easy and secure access to files within the home network or internet. Users can now avoid the tedious process of selecting a public file-sharing site to upload files, without worrying about privacy policies or if the service goes out of business. The ReadySHARE allows for easy designation of files and readily identifies folders that can be shared. Shared files can then be easily accessed from any computer with an Internet connection, as well as through apps from NETGEAR for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android smartphones and Android tablets. ReadySHARE will also allow home users to create their own cloud through easy-to-learn techniques from NETGEAR. The N600 Premium Edition is easy to install and manage, with no CD required for installing and the router can be configured through a simple browser-based interface accessible on PCs, Mac's, smart phones, the iPad and other tablets. The new device can ably select a channel for smartphone users to receive uninterrupted transmission and high quality audio reception. The new device is NETGEAR's most feature-rich home router, which is built around a powerful 680 MHz processor backed by 16 MB of flash memory and 128 MB of RAM. The N600 Premium Edition comes with many advanced features like ReadySHARE Printer, NETGEAR Genie, NETGEAR Live Parental Controls, Guest Network, DLNA standard streaming, Automatic Quality of Service (QoS), Expanded TiVo storage, fast wireless and wired connections, automatic WiFi security and an open platform. The N600 will be available in the Middle East in the second half of October 2011 at an estimated retail price of USD 116 (AED 426).

UAE-based Company Zero Technologies to unveil ‘Zeroclient’ UAE-based Zero Technologies is set to unveil a radically new, inexpensive, internetbased, ‘zero client’ computing system and a veritable dream-team of partners. The company will also become the Middle East’s first company to manufacture and export consumer electronics that are whollyowned by a regional company. “As desktop virtualization revolutionizes the world’s workplaces, UAE-based Zero Technologies is proud to represent the country’s pioneering and entrepreSherif Hamed neurial spirit in its leadership Co-Founder & CEO, Zero Technologies in this critical new area of technological advancement,” said Dr. Mohamed Almur, Co-Founder of UAE-based Zero Technologies. Consumers of ‘zero client’ technology only require a traditional keyboard and mouse, display unit, and then a small, stylish ‘client device’ which enables them to access and store data on a central server located anywhere in the world. With zero client technology, computing infrastructure and maintenance costs for individuals and corporations are dramatically reduced, endpoint management and security breaches are completely eliminated, and energy consumption is slashed by 95 percent when compared to a PC. “The desktop PC, as we know it today, is now dead. It’s a relic from an era when desktop virtualization technology simply did not exist,” said UAE-based Sherif Hamed, Co-Founder and CEO, Zero Technologies. Zero Technologies incorporates technology developed by US desktop virtualization pioneer Pano Logic to offer a system which has no software, no operating systems, no CPU, no memory, and no moving parts at the endpoint.

Cyberoam

Branching out into new vistas Cyberoam, one of the leading vendors in the UTM market, has announced its NetGenie series of routers for the home and soho markets. Hemal Patel, CEO at Elitecore technologies which owns the Cyberoam brand speaks with VAR Magazine in the following interview Cyberoam to launch a product like NetGenie. We have big plans in NetGenie’s roadmap and are confident of solving the needs of users in this market with our offering.

Hemal Patel CEO, Elitecore Technologies

Discuss your major plans at the GITEX showcase this year? GITEX is an important platform for Cyberoam and we look forward to showcasing our new product line at this important ICT gathering for the Middle East. With high internet penetration in the region, we expect to have a very positive response to the launch of our NetGenie routers that are aimed at the home and SOHO markets. We also have plans to sign up a new distributor for the region and build on our market share for both routers and UTM lines. Please discuss the go to market plans and the positioning for the NetGenie routers? Are these meant for home users? NetGenie is not just another router. It comes with online security, advanced Internet controls, 3G readiness, user-based reporting, and much more, in a single appliance. The product is an outcome of in-depth research on the Internet concerns of both these segments and saves the cost of deploying separate solutions for separate needs of users. NetGenie is targeted at home and SOHO users through two separate NetGenie appliances. NetGenie Home is positioned as a Home Wireless Router with Family Protection while NetGenie SOHO is Unified Threat Management for SOHO. Besides other features, parents can set age-appropriate internet controls for their kids on a single-click and also schedule the time they spend on a type of website. SOHO users can set Internet controls based on the level of Internet access desired for an employee. With Cyberoam’s leading position in the IT security industry, years of experience and rich knowledge of the security market, it was a natural progression for

Does this also mean that Cyberoam from a network security appliance company is ready to transform into a networking vendor as well? As I mentioned before, NetGenie is an obvious evolution of Cyberoam’s extensive experience in the IT security market. NetGenie will provide enterprise-level security to homes and small offices besides many other benefits. Apart from the routers, discuss other new launches at GITEX from your UTM range We are gradually entering a new phase offering a new generation of devices with higher performance and better network throughput. New range of enterprise security devices are also in the pipeline. Is your market share largely in the SMB segment. How do you fare in the enterprise segment? We have had a clear and steady growth path and have gained a strong position in the SMB market.. Our strength is of an agile security vendor that pays attention to the needs of the end-user and addresses them systematically. Our bandwidth management, reporting and Identity based security have been very popular across all segments. This doesn’t mean Cyberoam is not an enterprise segment player. We have UTM appliances such as CR1500ia for the enterprise segment, which touch upward of 2500 users. We have been touching the enterprise market and made successful inroads into the strategic accounts of governments, education, corporate, and other key sectors.. In summary, to date how has the year been so far in terms of sales performance? 2011 has been an extremely positive year for Cyberoam. We have achieved over 70% of our yearly targets within Q1 and Q2. With our current launch plans for NetGenie and an additional distributor, we are hopeful of exponential business growth.

Intel Gains Microprocessor Share Aided by a recovery in the PC market and by strong shipments of its new Sandy Bridge chips, Intel Corp. in the second quarter expanded its lead in the global microprocessor market compared to a year earlier, according to the latest IHS iSuppli Computer Systems research from information and analysis provider IHS (NYSE: IHS). Intel in the second quarter accounted for 81.8 percent of global microprocessor revenue, up 1.1 percentage points from 80.7 percent in the second quarter of 2010. Chief Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) suffered a corresponding 1.1 percentage point decrease in share during the same period.

The IHS ranking of leading microprocessor suppliers in the second quarter of 2011. The market share numbers presented in the tables and this release include revenue for the entire global microprocessor market, including X86, RISC, and other types of general-purpose microprocessors. The data is not limited to the X86 chips used in the PC market, although these types of devices represent the vast majority of shipments. “Intel in the second quarter benefited from the combination of a recovery in PC demand and strong shipment growth for its new Sandy Bridge line of microprocessors,” said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for

processors, helping to expand its market share. The company described its production increases for the microprocessor as the fastest ramp-up of any product in the company’s history.

PC Recovery Fuels Rebound in Microprocessor Sales After contracting on a sequential and annual basis during the first three months of the year, the global PC market returned to growth in the second quarter, with total shipments of 85.6 million units, up 3.7 percent from 82.6 million during the same period in 2010.

The Sandy Bridge line integrates graphics as part of the processor package, and is targeted at corporate and consumer markets across desktop and notebook PC platforms.

This contributed to a 10 percent year-overyear leap in global microprocessor revenue in the second quarter. Global microprocessor revenue in the second quarter of 2011 amounted to $10.8 billion, up from $9.8 billion the same time a year ago. PC sales were propelled by strong demand from corporate information technology (IT) departments, which now are engaging in efforts to refresh their hardware. In contrast, consumer PC demand was weak because of rising competition from tablets and due to increasing economic concerns. This benefited Intel, which derives a greater proportion of its microprocessor revenues from the corporate market. Sandy Bridge Provides Bridge to Growth Meanwhile, Intel also aggressively increased production of its Sandy Bridge line of micro-

AMD Performs Better Sequentially While Intel was the star of the microprocessor market on a year-over-year basis, AMD’s second-quarter performance appears better when using a sequential comparison. AMD’s share of the microprocessor revenue in the second quarter rose to 10.4 percent, up 0.3 percent from 10.1 percent in the first quarter. This compares to Intel’s 0.7 percentage point decline from 82.6 percent in the first quarter. AMD’s strong increase in shipments of its Fusion microprocessors helped the company to halt the sequential decrease in shipments that it has suffered for the last three quarters. “AMDs results were powered up by Fusion microprocessors, which delivers improved computational performance. It also provides PCs with DirectX 11 graphics capability without the need for a discrete graphics card,” Wilkins said.a
