Stretching value
Taking the SME route T
he SME segment in the UAE is quite large in terms of number of Businesses and the workforce employed by the segment. While the number of staff at each of these Businesses may vary by large range, many of these companies maybe engaged in significant high value Businesses with the need for productive ICT applications. While there are many vendors who tap into the SME segment, for those vendors who have typically focused on enterprise scale solutions, it is necessary to look at SME as a sizable opportunity that must be addressed, that also accounts for the diversity of the individual Businesses. In challening secnarios, while some existing Businesses may exit, there are simultaneously new ones making their debut across verticals. Some may start-up on a modest footing while there maybe a few who believe in investing heavily in infrastructure right away that can form the backbone of their business growth. From several conversations in the past with industry spokespeople, it emerges that their classification of these Businesses at most times is based only around number of users and sometimes this misses out on the fact that there are several high value Businesses that transact Businesses with limited number of employees. For those Businesses, engaged in high value services like legal consulting for instance, they may afford to pay the premium and acquire the best of breed solutions, despite not having requisite number of users. The vendors along with partners need to identify high value Businesses in the SME segment that are in a startup mode or in the phase of refreshing their ICT infrastructure. It is necessary for the channel to be aware of the new Businesses that are coming up so that they can be the first to approach them. They can hand hold them from their initial start-up and help them grow their ICT infrastructure as required. This is perhaps one of the easier ways to gain and retain customers.

Pure Storage retained in Leaders Quadrant Pure Storage has retained its position in the Leaders Quadrant of the Magic Quadrant for Solid State Arrays (SSAs) by Gartne. For the third straight year, Pure Storage is positioned furthest along the “Completeness of Vision” axis in the Leaders Quadrant. Since its founding in 2009, Pure Storage has been at the forefront of massive industry disruption, pioneering the shift from legacy spinning disk arrays to all-flash, solid state arrays built for the modern enterprise. The company’s customer-centric Evergreen Storage business model, recently expanded to include the Right-Size Guarantee and Capacity Consolidation, changes the way storage is built, sold, and also managed and maintained over time. Evergreen Storage enables customers to take advantage of the latest flash technology as it becomes available, via non-disruptive upgrades – avoiding the forklift upgrade that typically dominated their old purchasing cycles. “It has been an action-packed 12 months for Pure Storage– starting with the IPO, continuing on through the revolution of FlashBlade and culminating with this most recent recognition from Gartner,” said Scott Dietzen, CEO, Pure Storage. “In order to best serve our customers as a long-term partner, it’s crucial that we continue to execute at the pace we have while building a sustainable business for the future. We believe to be positioned in the Leaders Quadrant for three straight years validates our technology differentiation continues to be very real.”

Palo Alto Networks updates Traps Palo Alto Networks, the nextgeneration security company, announced new functionality, including significant machine learning capabilities for real-time unknown malware prevention, to its Traps advanced endpoint protection offering. These updates further strengthen the malware and exploit prevention capabilities of Traps and alleviate the need for legacy antivirus products to protect endpoints, such as laptops, servers and VDI instances. An alternative to legacy antivirus point products, Traps uniquely combines the most effective, purpose-built malware and exploit detection methods to prevent known and unknown threats before they can successfully compromise an endpoint. By focusing on detecting and blocking the techniques at the core of these attacks, Traps can prevent sophisticated, targeted and neverbefore-seen attacks. Traps both shares with and receives threat intelligence information from the Palo Alto Networks WildFire cloudbased malware analysis environment. Threat intelligence information is passed to WildFire by each component of the security platform, and Traps uses this information to block threats on the endpoint no matter where they originated. “Antivirus point products give organizations a false sense of security, because while they technically make users compliant with regulatory and corporate governance requirements, they do not protect against today’s advanced cyberthreats. To do that, organizations must adopt a cybersecurity platform that prevents malware from infiltrating the enterprise at any point, including the endpoint, even if it has never been seen before, ” saidLee Klarich, executive vice president, Product Management, Palo Alto Networks.

Epicor continues Cloud-First strategy rollout with the Middle East Epicor Software Corporation announced its new cloud-first strategy for Epicor ERP deployments in the region. This follows an earlier announcement where Epicor said that it had chosen the Microsoft Azure Datacenter in Singapore to support new cloud deployments in Asia. Sabby Gill, executive vice president for Epicor International said, “Over the last couple of years, we have seen a growing appetite for cloud solutions from existing and new customers. Rolling out our cloud-first strategy in the Middle East means ERP customers in the region can now leverage cloud deployment benefits including business consistency, worry-free security, hassle free upgrades, reduced risk and faster time to value. Perhaps most importantly, given the current economic climate with depressed oil-prices, cloud solutions also offer lower total cost of ownership (TCO)”. Epicor has made it easy for organisations to utilise the cloud to take advantage of a new cloud-first era of service delivery and flexibility, where ERP is delivered as a service and accompanied by value-added services. Building on the momentum of its successful move of hundreds of multi-tenant Epicor cloud customers to the new Epicor ERP 10.1 release in the United States and parts of Asia, Epicor is now expanding its global cloud footprint in the Middle East and Egypt.
Cisco unveils new Data Centre innovations Cisco announced data center technology innovations in three key areas: networking, hyperconverged infrastructure, and hybrid cloud orchestration which will enable applicationcentric hybrid cloud deployments. Cisco continues to lead data center innovation with SDN-ready Nexus switches that deliver cloud scale 10/25/40/50/100Gpbs, with up to 10 times performance improvement at industry leading price points. The new switching platforms provide the scale, telemetry, security, and performance needed for distributed containers and microservices, as well as the lossless traffic needed for IP storage and hyperconverged infrastructure. The new switches give Cisco customers a two-year innovation advantage over competitive technology. Cisco also unveiled Cisco HyperFlex Systems, built on Cisco’s industry-leading UCS compute platform, which brings a new architectural approach to hyperconverged infrastructure. Cisco HyperFlex Systems simplify policy-based automation across network, compute and storage for the widest set of enterprise applications. This expands Cisco’s portfolio of complete software-defined infrastructure – from compute with UCS, network with ACI and SDN solutions, to now HyperFlex for storage. Earlier this year, Cisco announced its intent to acquire CliQr Technologies Inc. The CliQr CloudCenter platform will provide customers with comprehensive yet simplified, application-centric orchestration for private, hybrid and public clouds. “Cisco’s new data center and cloud solutions will enable our partners to help their customers as they evolve to application-centric data center infrastructure and also address the requirements for DevOps and application developers. We believe this will expand the opportunity for new revenue streams and professional services for Cisco partners,” Shadi Salama, Channel Leader – Middle East Theatre, Cisco.

ManageEngine extends self-service Analytics to IT operations, customer support ManageEngine, the real-time IT management company, today announced that the latest version of its self-service IT analytics software, Analytics Plus, integrates with its IT operations and monitoring and customer support solutions. Now, Analytics Plus goes beyond ITSM analytics to help enterprises derive meaningful insights from the data generated by ManageEngine’s network monitoring, applications monitoring and customer support software. The new version of Analytics Plus is generally available now. Organizations typically use several IT monitoring tools for detailed, real-time monitoring of their networks, servers, applications, support tickets and other IT-related components. To make strategic decisions, however, organizations need an IT operational analytics tool that lets them analyze the monitoring data, spot trends and make better IT-related business decisions. The analytics tool must also work with data from multiple monitoring tools simultaneously to avoid the near-sighted, one-dimensional view that’s created when each monitoring tool’s data remains isolated in its own silo. “IT teams often look at data from various tools individually, so they miss out on the holistic picture as well as the patterns and anomalies they need to strategically address problems and plan for the future,” said Sridhar Iyengar, vice president, product management, at ManageEngine. “Analytics Plus depicts unified IT dashboards by extracting and analyzing data from different tool sets embedded in an organization’s IT and by providing cross-data analytics, all with an easy drag-and-drop user interface.”

STME offers Veritas - NetApp integrated Archival Solution STME, a leading IT solutions provider and systems integrator (SI), has launched an integrated solution from two world-class vendors, Veritas and NetApp. The bundle, based on Veritas Enterprise Vault in conjunction with NetApp FAS storage arrays, integrates solutions from both vendors to provide clients with a comprehensive archival solution. The combined Veritas and NetApp bundle is a fully customizable archiving solution for customers from any vertical industry. It works as a drop-in system for existing IT environments as well as new deployments. By bundling archiving licenses and physical storage together, the bundle helps reduce overall information management costs. “Archiving is the ideal tool for protecting, organizing, and searching data, helping to meet compliance and eDiscovery requirements. The combined Veritas and NetApp solution complements an organization’s existing backup implementation. Archives are for discovery, while backups are for recovery,’’ said Ayman Al Bayaa, CEO of STME. Archiving solutions improve many areas of data protection and IT operations. For example, by archiving “stale” data from primary applications, such as Microsoft SharePoint or Windows-based file servers, the storage footprint of these applications can be reduced, improving both backup and recovery performance. In addition, by using archiving, and not backup, for long-term information retention, organizations can optimize data protection strategies – for example, transitioning from keeping backups forever to shorter retention tailored to meet recovery point and time objectives.

Securing identities Evolis, a leading manufacturer of a comprehensive range of printing systems and plastic card personalization solutions intends to make plastic card printing widely available, offering cost effective solutions for printing high quality cards easily, quickly and on the spot. Alexandre Maugin, Evolis sales manager Middle East discusses the company’s focus in the region
Alexandre Maugin Sales Manager Evolis Middle East
Discuss your focus on the Middle Eastern market in terms of operations and coverage? The Middle East has been for Evolis a key market in terms of business development over the past 10 years, and we foresee a continuous and strong growth of activity into the various vertical sectors we target with our range of Card Personalization Systems. We are operating in every country of the region with a local network of distributors, VARs and system integrators. How do you see the regional demand for your range of printers? What are the major use case scenarios? The demand is very diverse, from the simple staff ID card

or student card for a local school to the most advanced and secured access control cards. The banking market in particular is a very dynamic sector for us in the Middle East. We provided thousands of systems which are used by more than 25 banks in the Middle Eastern region for the issuance of payment cards at branch level and the demand is growing; this is what we call “instant issuance”. As we are now launching a new Lamination module dedicated to ID cards requiring higher level of security and time-proof resistance, we see a great potential in the Middle Eastern region. As the demand for higher security is a growing concern for all, our new offer is particularly adapted to the
market requirements in terms of flexibility, security, ease of use but also in terms of affordability. Apart from printers, discuss briefly the other range of products you offer? Card printers and its direct consumables account for more than 90% of the business of the Evolis Group. However a few years ago, we started to diversify our portfolio. We are today offering a range of digital signature pads with secure software for signature acquisition. This high-end offer allows us to enrich our customer offer in terms of secure identification solutions. As a direct link to our core business, Evolis is also offering a complete range of
accessories for plastic cards (lanyards, card holders, clips, etc…) through its subsidiary SOGEDEX ACCESSORIES. And last but not least, a dedicated ID Card software suite through our subsidiary CardPresso is also part of the Evolis group. Elaborate your channel strategy? Evolis is partnering with over 450 direct channel and SI partners around the world, 25 among them are based in Middle East. We are active with a local representative in each country of the region. We have a mixed approach. Evolis has different lines of products with a common core of professional models that are accessible to all our partners from the ID industry.
Awards Survey 2013
"The banking market is a very dynamic sector for us in the Middle East. We provided thousands of systems which are used by more than 25 banks in the Middle Eastern region for the issuance of payment cards at branch level and the demand is growing"
But we also have the capacity to develop specific models, options or consumables to answer customer requirements for specific projects. We do not constrain partners with a limited access to our range of products, but of course some specific models with advanced technology will require particular skills and capacity from our partners to be marketed.
Discuss your focus on different verticals in the region? Desktop plastic card printers are useful to many different types of customers. From the simple staff ID badge or student card for a local school to the most advanced and secured Access Control cards. This is true for every of our markets and Middle East is not an exception to this. However there are of course some specific verticals which are more dynamic in the Middle East. The banking market in particular is a vibrant sector for us in the region as local banks have been early adopters of what we call “instant issuance” of payment cards at branch level. We can say without a doubt that Evolis is leading the market in the region with several thousands of our devices deployed in more than 25 banks across the region. Security and secure identification of people is of course a growing concern for the Middle Eastern region and therefore also a key market for Evolis in terms of vertical. As we are now launching a new lamination module dedicated
Awards Survey 2013
to ID cards requiring higher level of security and time-proof resistance, we see a great potential in the Middle Eastern region. Do you have partners with expertise in specific verticals including Education, healthcare etc? Most cases of use for ID card printing do not require advanced skills. Printing an ID Card for an university, a private company or an administration can be supported by every of our partners as they all have the required experience and training from our side. Of course there are some verticals that requires a specific expertise, such as banking or ID at a national scale. Ideally we want our partners to be experts in as many fields as possible, but when they do not have the will to develop such expertise then we will surely extend our network to ensure that every vertical will be covered by the right partner, in every country. Elaborate any recent channel initiatives? Our support to partners is provided on a daily basis, whenever and wherever required to tap all opportunities. In May this year we organized for the first time a dedicated Middle East Partner event in Dubai. It was the ideal occasion to showcase our latest product news, to offer training on these innovations and to reaffirm our values and
support towards our partners. Do some of these solution deployments require training for channel partners? Being able to market and support our products definitely requires frequent trainings but Evolis is not a System Integrator developing solutions, we are a hardware manufacturer. One of our strengths is our network, we have the capacity to create contact between a channel partner with an SI from different countries. So we ensure that best expertise will be provided to customers, from hardware to software including services. Customer satisfaction is our ultimate goal. Discuss the focus on securing these cards? There are different ways to strongly secure an ID Card thanks to different technologies and techniques: using barcodes, magnetic stripe or smart card encoding (contact chip or RFID / Contactless), specific printing techniques such as micro text or UV ink, using laser engraving technology, applying a secure and unique hologram on a laminate etc. The choice of the technology depends on the stakes of securing a card. The higher the security of a card, the higher the costs of the technology. All those technologies are offered by Evolis, and we are now releasing our newest solution
for card lamination which consists of an add-on module to our best seller “PRIMACY”, the most complete and powerful desktop ID card printer in its category. This new laminator add-on allows to increasie the card security by applying on cards a laminate layout extending the durability of the document by up to 10 years. This same laminate can be combined with a specific and unique hologram to ensure a higher level of security for visual control of ID Cards, which remains the most simple and efficient way to verify an ID. In the region, which country markets are fast growing? Do you have partners in all key GCC markets or would you be looking to appoint new partners? We can’t ignore that current economic market conditions are not very positive in the Middle East. Despite the situation we managed to grow our YTD activity in the Levant countries and maintain our business in GCC markets. This is only thanks to our dynamic partners and our efforts to keep supporting them, even during times of challenges. Today we have partners in every country of the Middle East including the GCC markets; however we always look at developing the second-tier network of indirect partners. There are every day new market opportunities and verticals to explore. September 2016 | 17

System Integrators are enhancing capabilities to address customer needs even as they cope with the transformation coming in with emerging technologies

T
he fast paced emergence of new technologies continues to lead transformational shifts with both those who deploy technologies and end users who are beneficiaries of the deployments. For systems integrators in the region, the challenge is to be among the first as well as be the best in taking new solutions to market even when confronting the challenges of sustaining profitable operations in the face of visible economic slowdown. Some traditional solutions have seen a drop in demand and Emerging technologies have disrupted traditional go to market models, which therefore necessitates the need for an SI to adopt new solutions and new approaches among their offerings. Integrators cannot choose to ignore the change that is coming and need to substantiate their value proposition to customers. Stephen Fernandes, Executive Vice President - TransSys Solutions, an Oracle Platinum Cloud Select Partner says, “With several new and disruptive technologies such as IoT, software defined infrastructure etc. in the market today, a systems integrator’s role has become more relevant in today’s business. System Integrators need to have a good understanding of the customer’s strategy, business and their IT requirements. Customers are keen to engage in a partnership model, where the SI on-boards the best practices, proven technology and innovates to deliver value to their stakeholders.” While it may be challenging to have all necessary expertise in-house, collaboration with other solutions providers is an approach to boost overall capabilities to deliver. Companies are increasingly adopting new technologies and solutions from multiple vendors. This consequently creates a huge opportunity for system integrators in helping integrate solutions that differ in architecture and specifications. Stephen adds, “SIs need to continuously innovate and evolve with changing times to remain ahead of the curve. They need to help customers drive

higher services levels with the right blend of technologies. SIs have definitely shifted their game plan. To offer a high value proposition to their clients, they are collaborating across the board. They are partnering with Managed Service Providers as well as Cloud Providers. Interestingly, in the new collaboration model size does not matter, it is the value that each partner brings to the table. Smaller consulting players and solution providers offer deep industry domain and niche technology to the consortium. Further, there is a growing trend of larger organizations preferring smaller niche solution providers for their skills and agility to deliver.” BFSI, government, manufacturing, and telecommunications sectors and are domains that have a healthy demand for

SI services, especially in application integration to deliver better customer services. A recent Market and Markets report forecasts the global EAI (Enterprise Application Integration) market to grow at a CAGR of 10.58% during the period 2016-2020. Finesse, an SI that offers software solutions in the areas of Business Intelligence, CRM, Enterprise Content Management, Governance, Risk & Compliance and Corporate Performance Management apart from several other software applications, is continuously
seeking to bring in innovative solutions into the segments its focuses on. Sunil Paul, COO at says, “We have expanded our portfolio to cater to demands in the newer technologies and offerings. We have been adding different dimensions to our services by integrating solutions into our portfolio for unique positioning. With in - depth knowledge, extensive training and proven experience, Finesse offers the most suitable approach to meet the client requirements.” He elaborates, “We continue to bring September 2016 | 19

innovative solutions into our portfolio including the Currency Sterilizer, Robotic Wet Signature (Remote Signature) and HiMed Terminal (for patient-doctor interaction). We offer InfoArchiving solutions to take of legacy systems and applications. We have also added Infra practice to our existing portfolio to give a wholesome solution to our customers.” The focus on new capabilities and solutions is quite pertinent especially in domains such as information security where the threat landscape is constantly evolving. Jude Pereira, Managing Director, Nanjgel Solutions, a leading security solutions SI, says, “We are constantly on the lookout for the latest & greatest in technologies/ vendors that can prove immediate value to our clients, so we have most certainly added several new vendors for Incident Response Platform, Application Security – not from a scanning point of view but to be able to hardening the app & securing the same, Intelligent Threat & Machine Readable Management Feeds, Risk Management, End User Threat Behavior Analysis, Endpoint Detection & Remediation etc.”

Substantial shifts Cloud based services are gaining acceptance for the convenience they offer across sectors. And with that, there has been a sea change in the way a lot of technology is being procured as the consumption based OPEX model gains ground over the traditional CAPEX model. Sunil says, “Some of the larger projects are being put on hold or moving slowly due to the slowdown in the region. However on the other side, the demand for OPEX model based solutions is looking up.” The shift toward OPEX consumption models is necessitating integrators to adopt and modify their terms of engagement and agreement with customers that need to follow best practices. Stephen says, “There is a shift in the way companies procure today, and going forward, this will continue to spiral towards a consumption based model. An upward trend towards IT outsourcing has called for SIs to adapt to best practices in service delivery. Financial modelling, improved service level agreements backed by innovation and a continuous evolution in solutions to address business outcomes is now a key factor for clients.”
He opines that the perceived slowdown in the economy has made companies to take a cautious approach towards IT investments. Most companies have planned for growth both in revenues and profitability but with reduced budgets; there is a push towards OPEX based models leveraging cloud computing. Stephen adds, “Companies demand business value from Systems Integrators and vendors. Forward-looking companies will continue to invest after taking a strategic view of the markets. They will invest in low cost, high impact initiatives driven by Mobility and Analytics. Companies are making a shift to the digital journey, mandated by both their customers as well as their competitors.” IoT is widely anticipated to be a game changer when it becomes more pervasive in deployments. Jude adds, “There is certainly going to be a technology explosion with the coming of IoT which is going to change the current technology landscape and the control as well as management of the same drastically. We have already made sure that whatever solutions we currently have in our portfolio are in a position to address the challenges and changes that come with the emergence of IoT & SDN technologies. We have in fact already currently engaged with some projects in the region.”
What it takes Jude elaborates the consistent effort that an SI needs to invest in to be on top of their game in all processes from understanding customer requirements to designing, deploying and supporting. He says, “There are several factors that we consider to maintain the lead as a provider of IT Security Solutions. The first is to ensure we have the latest and the best in terms of vendors we are associated with and the technologies we have to offer. Secondly, we need to be able to have an excellent consultant to understand, design and document the customer’s requirements as well as how we can going to provide with the most ideal solution at the best price. Third, it is necessary to have an excellent
Awards Survey 2013
certified team that can implement and take the design document, scope of work documents etc and put all of that into implementation of the most successful and automated solution. Finally, you need to be able to support the customer on daily operation issues with zero downtime on the solution. Guess it is easy to begin all these four processes but it’s a nightmare to sustain and maintain the same levels of enthusiasm at all times.” He adds that as a company, he believes that Nanjgel, while being one of the more successful ones in the verticals its focuses on in the region, has potential to deliver much more and has enough projects in hand to complete. Therefore, the company doesn’t see the need to diversify outside its current areas of competence. Stephen opines that TransSys sees opportunities across all key industry verticals and adds that to be relevant to the industry sector, it is important to understand the organization’s business drivers for technology procurement. Based on its past experience and expertise gained, TransSys has developed industry specific frameworks and methodology that are offered to its clients as part of services. This holistic approach, Stephen claims helps to reduce the risk associated with any implementation and support services. He elaborates, “Opportunities could range from advisory services around enterprise architecture, to transition their on premise infrastructure and services, including data centers, to a cloud computing model. As an SI, we need to continue to innovate to ensure that we address industry vertical challenges. We have successfully delivered complex solutions across Airlines, Banking, Insurance, Retail, Real Estate and Telecom. Besides we have worked with strategic clients in other industry verticals.
Ahead on the road With the market becoming more commoditized, SIs now have to focus on delivering value added services that enable their customers to compete in a market led by digitalization. Innovation and differentiation with higher service
Awards Survey 2013
levels must remain top of mind for system integrators to remain relevant. Stephen adds that training and retaining talent is also a key challenge, TransSys invests significantly in training as well as in building innovative solutions that will remain the key focus for the company in the year ahead. He elaborates, “Attracting and retaining key IT talent and skills has always been an uphill task in the SI industry. To this end, TransSys trains its staff and enables skill development across all disciplines. These investments into our employee’s development helps us to retain the best talent with industry standard skill sets. In 2016-17, we will continue to invest in innovation and transformation solutions, thereby helping our clients increase their revenues and market share while improving their profitability. We have invested in building our industry knowledge and this has helped us in successfully delivering multiple transformational solutions across various industry segments.” Integrators such as Finesse are making concerted efforts and investments in participating at different regional ICT expos as well as doing focused events that help them drive visibility with target base of customers about solutions they offer. Sunil says, “We are very active in organizing regular seminars, road shows and channel orientation programmes and that puts us in a leading position along with robust client acquisition, 100 % Project delivery, awards and recognition.” The integrator is also quite upbeat about prospects ahead, having gone ahead with expansions into different markets and with plans to further stretch out into Africa and Europe. Sunil elaborates, “Finesse continues to grow at a 50% YoY. With operations across the region with over 175 clients, we have a very strong presence in Oman, Bahrain & Qatar apart from the UAE. We have recently stated our KSA operations. We will be expanding to the Africa & Europe markets by next year and our staff strength should cross 400. We are expecting our revenues to touch 100 million USD by 2022.”
Jude Pereira Managing Director Nanjgel Solutions
Nanjgel’s Jude says that while he has heard about slowdown heat that some companies are facing, his company has enough projects in hand and also has requirement for additional engineers. The SI is now looking to expand its reach into additional verticals. He adds, “We continue to see ourselves as the pioneers at what we do and confidently say that our dominance has been proved in the Oil & Gas, Telco, Government & Civil Service. We would like to expand in to the BFSI sector, transport & health care in the next couple of months to a year. Certainly we also want to be recognized for successful implementations and excellent after sales support, which we provide whole heartedly literally without any help from our vendors.” The SI market has enough opportunities ahead to build on as ICT continues to interweave itself as an integral Business enabler and a necessary investment, offsetting the slowdown impact substantially. The challenge therefore remain for SIs to ensure they bring to their customers solutions that are built for the future ahead. September 2016 | 21

Adopting emerging trends ITWare is an integrator which has been in the Region for more than decade that focuses around ERP/BI solutions in, Manufacturing, Retail, Service, Supply Chain and Web services empowered with mobile, social and cloud solutions. N. Ramkumar, Managing Partner at ITWARE discusses the company’s focus areas
Discuss the market outlook for the solutions areas you focus on? Our market focus is split between our existing Enterprise segment customers both private and Government and the fast growing SMB segment especially mid-sized manufacturing units around UAE, Oman and Bahrain. We focus on 3 vertical areas namely ERP and BI solutions, Logistics enabled with Mobility and finally niche vertical solutions in Human Resources, Administration including Visitor Attendance Management and smart cloud based solutions in Education, Lease Management and Retail While the outlook for core ERP tier 1 solutions especially on premise has dropped
22 | September 2016
considerably, there is renewed interest in mid-tier low end user friendly ERP and analytics solutions with customers on the lookout for an aggressive pricing model for both License and implementation, breaking away from a traditional turnkey approach with a limited onsite services and predominant offshore service and support. We also see a different customer approach with prospects looking at specific customized mobile or analytic solutions for some of their immediate pain areas especially in Field service, Retail CRM, Real time inventory planning, key production data capture direct from machines which can give them a faster ROI rather than waiting endlessly for completion of
large scope projects to get results Have you diversified your focus? We have already identified this paradigm shift last year as the projects were getting deferred with pipelines extending beyond 3-4 months for a decision. Hence we have also moved our focus in the last 6-8 months from large ERP projects to mid-tier ERP segment with Infor Industrial and Business Cloud suites (also available on Premise) backed up by a new fast track implementation approach with thrust on knowledge transfer to key users and an affordable TCO which is 25-35% lesser than the usual ERP implementation costs. We are targeting

the Free Zone companies especially in Northern Emirates and Oman who are still using small inventory/accounting solutions or an old legacy platform in this area To add value to our existing customer base, who are already running ERP for years, we are now developing small add on mobile solutions in specific pain areas which they have shared with us with a front end dash board and a web based middleware framework We have also diversified customers in Government Domain and recently conducted a successful Oracle QA and Audit/documentation project for large federal entity covering Oracle EBS and a whole lot of E services which is

a value add for our service operations and also focus on share point services and CRM with another Federal Government entity project with a regular services contract Discuss how emerging technology trends are impacting your focus? Customers are very receptive to new technologies, especially related to social media, cloud and mobility which are game changers for the Industry and are knowledgeable and clearly know what to expect from a project with the given investment and timelines. So as solution providers, rather than presenting our products as a routine, we need to listen to this new generation of customers mostly the Millennial IT professionals and come out with specific solutions irrespective of product portfolio which we have based on our domain expertise with a faster turnaround and an optimised budget and timelines. Hence we have taken in team of mobile developers with exposure in Android and I O/S especially with middleware web services, analytics and integration domain exposure so as to build a platform where we can plug in specific functionality required by customers. Have you brought in new vendor associations over the past year or so? Since we saw lot of demand
Awards Survey 2013
for Cloud based education and smart mobile solutions we have tied up with an Indian Vendor with a sales and local support arrangement and already have few customer and prospects in pipeline across some local universities and colleges. We are also working with this vendor for smart mobile solutions on open source platforms in hospitality and Health which are not falling within our core domains of Manufacturing and supply chain Visitor authentication and security is still a manual process in most of the commercial buildings in UAE and hence we have tied up with another vendor to bring in automated visitor Management solution with a one touch screen for seamless entry and exit including gate pass with bar codes and access control gate integration As construction boom picks up again in anticipation of Expo 2020 with whole lot of Malls and Retail chains coming up, managing the Lease of these premises both as lessor mainly the Mall managements and the Retailers themselves with shops leased across multiple malls becomes very complex which are still managed by excel sheets and workarounds with lot of customization in ERP. In tie up with one of the
leading Lease Management solution providers in US we are bringing an affordable cloud solution charged on per lease basis with a packaged implementation and support services and hope to see some new wins in next 2 quarters We are also in the process of partnering with a large Oman IT Corporate Training institution to provide advanced SAP and Oracle Training services as packaged courses for short term durations Have projects faced slowdown in the regionhow have you been trying to offset these challenges? Have you been conservative in response or have you expanded to other territories? Private sector projects have slowed down in past for sure especially last 6 months and we see every third prospect deferring the decision to next calendar year due to tough market conditions which is understandable. However, we see this as an opportunity to re-invest ourselves with new skill sets, technology and additional marketing efforts in these segments. Hence we have expanded our back office in India, invested in Gitex 2016 to provide an overview of the new solutions and set up a base in Oman where we find lot of automation opportunities in mid-sized manufacturing
and supply chain segments
Where does the company see itself in terms of a vision roadmap over the next 1-2 years? We see a few key trends developing over the next 2 years. There will be a demand for new cloud solutions for both current upgrades from older versions and new ERP customers due to the increase in IT Manpower and infrastructure costs and the challenges of decreased revenue due to falling oil prices for businesses overall. There will be more focus on customized middleware using open source technology as the Internet of Things(IOT) picks up steam with need for a new lighter, faster and smaller middleware with specific utility. With huge data, both with production and archived environments running in to monstrous proportions, Performance and KPA monitoring are becoming difficult even with branded analytic applications and hence customers might be looking at analytics on cloud which is cheaper, easier to manage and provide a quick ROI especially for the high end Management users Hence the 3 KPI areas of Mobility, IOT Middleware applications and simplified Analytics solutions constitute our focus for 2017 and beyond. Brandon Bekker Managing Director Mimecast Middle East & Africa
Securing the mail Mimecast makes business email and data safer for more than 15,000 customers and millions of employees worldwide. Founded in 2003, the company’s cloud-based security, archiving and continuity services protect email, and deliver comprehensive email risk management in a single, fully-integrated subscription service. Brandon Bekker, Managing Director, Mimecast Middle East & Africa discusses the company’s solutions and market focus
24 | September 2016
Discuss the market opportunity you focus on? The addressable market is any Business where email is central to the running of that Business. Having said that, the sweet spot is the midmarket Business segment with typically a hundred to a thousand users. The average customer profile from our over 20,000 customer accounts is over three hundred users. The sales of Mimecast solutions is a high-touch sale. We are dealing with company information that is critical, sensitive and confidential; it cannot be a supermarket model of sale and you need to engage someone at a high touch level. We try to do this at the most economical ways and for 100 users, if we can do this more digitally via partners, without being involved directly, that is preferable. Obviously, as you go higher into the enterprise segment with more users, it is a far higher touch engagement. The highlight of such software as a service and platform is that a small and medium business gets an enterprise experience. Mimecast solution is a very good value for money enterprise level service to acquire for small and medium Businesses at relatively low cost. It is a platform that sits at the Internet cloud level; payment is made as per user monthly subscription fee. You don’t need to buy hardware or licenses; this is underpinned by a service level agreement (SLA). Is this solution viable for a small user base? The challenge for smaller
Businesses is that it is quite expensive to serve for a smaller user base. The premium is quite high and you got to still pay for twenty users even if hypothetically there are only seven users. The price list is based depending on the region and starts being viable from a minimum of twenty to thirty users. While this is still not a focus area, we still get such business from Law Firms, Asset Managers, Stock Brokers for example which although smaller in size in terms of users, do require such services and therefore they are willing to pay the premium, which is still only a nominal cost for Businesses like that. Discuss how email has evolved to be quite critical today? Email wasn’t designed for everything that it does today. It started off as a form of communication among people of Business designed for Business consumption but over time people started sending confidential information like salary slips, contracts etc. over email. Since it has now become a completely mission critical application and very pervasive, we need to make sure that the email is up all the time- which is ensured through continuity, one of the services offered. Archiving ensures that records of transactions are kept. We make sure email is secure through email security solutions. Typically, these are point solutions and are bought as such by enterprises which is complex as well as expensive. From us, you get a complete email suite as a service off a platform. Every time we

add a service, you don’t need to buy additional hardware or software. As emails evolved and have probably become perhaps the most mission critical Business application, it has become prone to security breaches and attacks. As we evolve and develop, our positioning is more as a security Business. Initially while spam and viruses were what you need to protected against, that is no longer a big issue and there are many services for these. The more significant risks these days are from data leak protection, ransomware, spear phishing, attachments with security challenges, malicious urls etc. Discuss your channel approach? In a Businesses like ours,
you need to control the pace of growth as it can be quite fast. We have evolved into a hybrid reseller and direct approach. In some markets like South Africa and Australia, it is completely channel focused and all transactions are done through resellers. We look for resellers who have deep Microsoft capabilities and information security capabilities. In this market, we have slightly different approach and would be going to market with value add distributors. This gives us good reach and provides access to a large network of resellers quickly. We have got two distributors that we are working with- Bulwark and
Niveus. We have a handful of legacy value added resellers who will continue to transact with us. We have been in this markets, operating for the past 10 years but not strategically but because there has been demand. We have picked up about 100 customers over the past ten years but it has not been a focused approach, rather more tactical and opportunistic. As this Business thrives on a high touch model, we want to be locally present here as customers and prospects would like to see the vendor. In March this year, we decided to put the plan together which was approved and within five months we had set up an office here.
Do you offer detailed reports to customers? We have a detailed granular approach. We provide reports to our customers, typically once a quarter. Depending on what services they may have bought, we provide them reports on how we help them in those areas. Regarding continuity, if the platform goes down and continuity kicks in and you are able to continue sending emails- that is a clear result. For security, we can show them the various kinds of threat we have blocked – that makes Businesses understand from an investment point of view. In archiving, we can show the size of the archives and the interactive searches that have been made etc.
Bulwark partners with Mimecast Bulwark announced that they have partnered with Mimecast Limited, a recognized leader in enterprise email archiving, to provide one-stop shop for email archives and data security solutions in the region. Bulwark, the pioneering Security distributor in the region, will distribute Mimecast’s full portfolio of security, continuity and archiving products to help keep email safer and more productive for businesses. Mimecast’s cloud services deliver comprehensive email risk management in one-fully integrated subscription service. extraordinary community. The sheer scale of Linux’s influence is difficult to articulate - the New York Stock Exchange, one of the most sophisticated IT organizations in the world, has said “it flows like water.” . It’s easiest to understand the role of Linux in two ways: • As an extremely low barrier of entry to a highquality, innovative operating system kernel • As an icebreaker for the broader movement of open source software

T
wenty-five years ago, a short post on a Usenet group by Linus Torvalds heralded the arrival of a new, home-brewed operating system: Linux. Fast forward to today, and Linux is the bedrock of enterprise computing, the fundament for a significant majority of datacenter innovation. Linux operating system distributions are now so numerous and so pervasive that it’s almost easy to take Linux’s impact for granted. “Almost” being the key word here. Over the past quarter century, Linux adoption has grown significantly, and we expect it to continue growing, just as we expect to see more innovations emerge from this
Open source certainly existed before Linux. It would not, however, exist as it does today without Linux. Linux provided a powerful catalyst to the free and open source software movement. The successes of a fundamental building block like the operating system drove more adoption, more innovation and more legitimacy for other projects and communities. Twenty-five years later, we have an IT domain that is now effectively “open by default.” Take, for example, GitHub, which is now the home for a bulk of the world’s open source code, communities and projects. Github is built on git, which was created by Linus Torvalds, the grandmaster and namesake of Linux, to help bring sanity to Linux kernel development. It was never intended to be the engine for this massive repository that it is now, but Git simply evolved to that state. This is

a common theme in open source, where projects and tools that were originally started in support of Linux but have grown well beyond those boundaries to serve the community at large, not just Linux.
"Linux provides a common, standardized platform, predictable across use cases, that allows for innovations on top of innovation Cloud computing, for example, is a result of this standardized innovation."
The standard for innovation Linux has also had a profound impact on outside of the open source world. Not just through the obvious innovation of the kernel, but also through standardized innovation. As our CEO Jim Whitehurst often alludes to, interchangeable parts in manufacturing during the early part of the 20th century eliminated much of the “bespoke” processes that went into manufacturing, allowing for true innovation to thrive on common platforms. This is exactly what Linux has done for 25 years - it provides a common, standardized platform, predictable across use cases, that allows for innovations on top of innovation. Cloud computing, for example, is a result of this standardized innovation. Without the cost and technical efficiencies provided by Linux, cloud computing would look incredibly different, if it existed at all – more akin to the siloed, custom UNIX stacks of the early 90s than the flexible, commoditized services we expect today. Linux containers are another example of innovation on top of
28 | September 2016
Linux. Containers use the standardized components of Linux itself to provide a new way of packaging and consuming enterprise applications. From Linux containers, we’ve seen even more innovation emerge, from the Docker project to Kubernetes, creating an emerging market for applications and tools that can manage dozens or hundreds of simple, isolated processes. Finally, hardware is not immune from the effects of Linux’s innovation. By providing a standardized platform, Linux effectively drove a wedge between the application and hardware, allowing for the rise of commodity x86 servers and even the evolution of emerging hardware approaches, like ARM and system on chip (SoC). This common base for computing has allowed enterprise IT to grow, emphasizing innovation instead of simply keeping the lights on with expensive maintenance and exorbitant licensing fees.
Beyond the datacenter Linux, as a driver for the methodology of open source, has also had a profound effect on our culture. As open source and Linux have grown together in prominence, we’ve seen more and more open-oriented shifts in our
world, from Wikipedia to open governance initiatives to community-driven business efforts, like crowdsourcing and even Kickstarter. The notion of collaboration done in a transparent, open manner joins well with an increasingly interconnected world, especially with the rise of social media, making open source a trend that goes well beyond the technology sector.
25 to life Linux has accomplished an inordinate amount in its short life: the driver for open source in the enterprise, an innovation standard-bearer, a cross-cultural, cross-industry driver for openness and more. But that’s not enough - what’s next? In the coming years, what does Linux need to accomplish? What challenges will it face? Here are just a few that I see: • Security - As a growing baseline for enterprise IT deployments, Linux is not just an enabling layer of software. It’s now a part of many organizations’ critical security infrastructure. This means more and more sophisticated mechanisms are needed for protecting data and applications, and that flaws or vulnerabilities must be diagnosed and addressed before they can be exploited. • Hardware advances - The commoditization of hardware (thanks to Linux)
now means more hardware options that update more frequently. Trends like cloud computing, non-volatile memory, GPU computing and the emergence of highly interconnected computing fabrics will change what we expect from an operating system. Linux needs to retain the position as the great standardizer, but this means adapting to an ever-growing ecosystem of emerging chipsets and hardware approaches. • Linux containers - For an innovation that bears its name, Linux containers have the potential to most shake up Linux (and open source) in the next quarter-century. From redefining the enterprise application lifecycle to operating systems that may need to exists for only a few milliseconds, Linux needs to continue driving towards the automation, scalability, and manageability that containers require. Thanks to Linux, open source is now a key player in enterprise IT and the global business world. Without it, many of the everyday tools that we take for granted, from on-demand services to VoIP, might not exist or would, at the least, look much, much different. While questions about the future must be addressed, there’s one point that will forever stand out: We owe a significant portion of our world today to a single Usenet post from 1991. Here’s to 25 years, Linux, and many more to come.

How to select your strategic datacentre partner Sachin Bhardwaj, eHosting DataFort, Director, Marketing & Business Development discusses how the right selection of a datacentre is a blend of auditing tangible metrics and assessing the human side of operations.
E
very datacentre has its share of strengths and characteristics that is the sum of its capital investments and innovative way of operations. An end-customer wanting to select a datacentre that meets its requirements in terms of availability and reliability must be ready to go down both the paths of assessments. What should you look for in your datacentre partner? Below are some important categories for assessment:
Certifications Third party certifications can help end customers gain confidence in the publicly available credentials of a datacentre. As an example, The Global Data Center Authority, Uptime Institute’s Tier Standard
30  |  September 2016
offers four grades I, II, III, IV in the areas of constructed facility and operational sustainability. If a datacentre is compliant and graded for its constructed facility it becomes eligible to be certified for operational sustainability. In summary, it covers staffing levels, skills, training, qualifications, effectiveness of maintenance and datacentre operations, policies that affect planning and coordination of activities, building characteristics, site location, organisational controls and security. Certifications are also independently provided by Payment Card Industry and HIPPA amongst others.
Location The location of the datacentre
Sachin Bhardwaj Director, Marketing & Business Development eHosting DataFort
is one of the most important single factors that can influence its selection. Is the datacentre located in a region of extreme weather change susceptible to large scale changes of wind, rain, and snow? These can frequently limit movement and activity. Or is the datacentre located in a region of geologic activity with frequent tectonic movements that can stress the building structures? Is there a significant power feeder connection or utility substation nearby that ensures that uninterrupted power is available for the datacentre? What is its distance to the nearest highway, urban city, airport, nuclear plant, important infrastructure, that needs
to be balanced in terms of remoteness, accessibility and proximity as required?
Design An important attribute inside a datacentre is not just how much existing equipment is stacked and how it is stacked, but also how new equipment will be stacked and configured. What are the options available to bring in new equipment in terms of individual cabinets, cages with racks, data modules and private rooms? And once decided how the equipment will be stacked and configured, what is the availability of power and cooling per square area of space leased. Does the datacentre
Awards Survey 2013
follow raised floors and cooling below with equipment racks directly secured to the concrete floor slabs? This is usually an important consideration for heavy and sensitive equipment. Other parameters to validate during selection are cooling efficiency, power density per rack, modular approach to build up, and just in time space expansion. Lastly, what is the availability of temporary office space when employees from end-customer organisations are expected to function on-site.
Connectivity The best advantages for an end-customer are when the datacentre offers the choice of network connectivity from multiple service providers and from multiple landing points. This allows the end-customer to become less susceptible to latency issues that may
arise from time to time with specific providers and through specific routes. The ideal situation arises when the datacentre provides direct connectivity to service providers they are contracted with. As well as the option of bringing in other service providers on demand without any specific preferences or bias towards any of them. This is sometimes referred to as carrier neutrality.
Operations Auditing the physical attributes of a datacentre is usually one side of the selection process. The other side is the human audit. How well does a datacentre go to reduce human errors? Are the processes and procedures of operation documented? How well are the staff trained on these processes and procedures? Are the processes flexible enough and is change
management built into the datacentre operations? How does the datacentre manage service level agreements, maintenance schedules, and planned downtime? Datacentres compliant with Tier III and Tier IV levels have redundant and fault tolerant capacities inbuilt and hence should rarely have any downtime. But datacentres compliant with Tier I and Tier II levels will need to go through planned downtime and will need to actively manage their service level agreements accordingly. A datacentre is also a business and the stability of the business model, shareholders, and profitability is an important part of the consideration.
Other factors Physical security is an integral part of the operations with varying degrees of importance
for every datacentre. This usually includes surveillance, biometrics and two factor authentication. Similarly, commissioning and maintenance of critical equipment is an important operational procedure. This covers end of life replacement, selection of new equipment, and incorporation of redundant equipment. Critical equipment is usually UPS devices, generators, switchgear, chillers, utility connections, control monitoring systems. Another key aspect is the presence of Data Center Infrastructure Management that can alert when there is a reduction in planned availability and reliability in real time. Finally, most datacentres tend to offer their own share of hosted IT solutions and going forward this may increasingly become the final point of differentiation.

Stats & Trends
Information Security spending to grow 7.9%
W
orldwide spending on information security products and services will reach $81.6 billion in 2016, an increase of 7.9 percent over 2015, according to the latest forecast from Gartner, Inc. Consulting and IT outsourcing are currently the largest categories of spending on information security. Until the end of 2020, the highest growth is expected to come from security testing, IT outsourcing and data loss prevention (DLP). Preventive security will continue to show strong growth, as many security practitioners continue to have a buying preference for preventive measures. However, solutions such as security information and event management (SIEM) and secure web gateways (SWGs) are evolving to support detection-and-response approaches. Gartner expects the SWG market will maintain its growth of 5 to 10 percent through 2020 as organizations focus on detection and response. "Organizations are
34 | September 2016
increasingly focusing on detection and response, because taking a preventive approach has not been successful in blocking malicious attacks," said Elizabeth Kim, senior research analyst at Gartner. "We strongly advise businesses to balance their spending to include both." Kim said that security spending will become increasingly service-driven as organizations continue to face staffing and talent shortages. Managed detection and response (MDR) is emerging, with demand coming from organizations struggling to deploy, manage and use an effective combination of expertise and tools to detect threats, and then bring their environment back to a known good state. This is particularly true for targeted advanced threats and insider threats. Spending in security markets such as consumer security software, secure email gateways (SEGs) and endpoint protection platforms (EPPs) continues to show constrained growth due to commoditization.
Other assumptions in the latest forecast include: • The average selling price for firewalls is expected to increase by at least 2 or 3 percent year over year until the end of 2018. This is driven by the market benefiting from higher demand for high-end equipment among cloud providers and other service providers, due to larger bandwidth needs and an increasing number of devices. While vendor competition continues to put pressure on pricing, enterprises, service providers and web-scale organizations are moving toward deploying bigger and more expensive firewalls. As a result, the deployment of large firewalls by cloud service providers will remain an important source of revenue growth for vendors. • By 2018, 90 percent of organizations will implement at least one form of integrated DLP, up from 50 percent today. Organizations have been deploying DLP to address regulatory compliance, intellectual property (IP) protection and data visibility
and monitoring. Newer solutions that include user entity and behavior analytics, image analysis, machine learning, and data-matching techniques are being used to augment existing solutions. • Public cloud adoption will impact firewall spending by less than 10 percent until the end of 2019 but will have an impact after that. While software as a service (SaaS) adoption is growing, the effect on firewall spending will be limited for the next three years. SaaS is the first choice for only 16 percent of CIOs surveyed by Gartner in 2015. Transitions also take time, during which vendors of cloud access security brokers (CASBs) will not only continue to evolve to cover more than just SaaS, but also perform similar roles for infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS). In addition, firewall vendors will also have to deal with one of their main challenges for the next few years: decrypting Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) at scale. • Half of midsize and large organizations will add bigger, more advanced inspectionoriented features to their network firewalls by 2019. Bandwidth has been increasing, requiring largerscale, higher-performing and more expensive firewalls. In addition, organizations are looking to firewalls to consolidate other features, such as web filtering and intrusion prevention capabilities. Some are enhancing their firewalls with new content inspection features, such as malware sandboxing.
