Overview

Shifting Gears It’s a futile attempt to try to keep up with technology trends. As soon as you get your hands on the “next big thing” another one appears promising to be the “breakthrough” innovation we have all been yearning for. This is soon replaced with an update of some earlier version with its “revolutionary” applications before we even get comfortable with the last one. That said, we cannot help but look at some of technological buzzwords of the day, “day” being the operative word. This is certainly not a guarantee that this will be what everyone will be talking about at any time in the future. BYOD is one such buzzword, a catchy acronym for a simple and logical technological leap. Sim4

October 2012

ply put, BYOD refers to the consummerization of technology, or bringing personal computer devices into the workplace. To be sure, BYOD has been with for a while, with personal cell phones being used to conduct official business by employees for ages. What has changed is the merging of these gadgets into the larger business IT system. For companies, there are benefits to allowing personal computers to be brought to the office. Our computers have become an extension of our lives, carefully chosen to reflect a bit about our personality in a world that worships conformity. Letting employees use devices they are more comfortable with should invariably lead to a more motivated and hopefully productive workforce. It could also lead to cheaper capital outlays on new

gadgets for the cost-conscious entrepreneur. This raises a lot of technical challenges for the IT manager not the least of which is how to deal with the obvious data security issues brought about. Securing company data is a full time job and all this could be undone by a personal laptop with less than robust security features. For IT managers holding out on embracing BYOD, security ranks top in the list of anxieties. Add compatibility issues, data management and employee privacy, and none but the bravest CIO has followed this path. The industry though has responded with storage, servers and networking systems manufactured with BYOD-centric applications in mind. Online security companies are also coming up with software that

give companies better control of their IT environments even with alien devices tethered to the network. BYOD was a rational next step as technology evolves, and companies should embrace the concept as well as technologies available to drive it forward. This year saw the launch of 802.11ac or 5G Wi-Fi, meant to replace the N technology that has been with us for several years. AC routers are made to enable multi-station WLAN throughput of at least 1 gigabit per second and a maximum single link throughput of at least 500 megabits per second (500 Mbit/s) ensuring much faster WiFi connections. With rapid accumulation of data brought on by the explosion of mobile devices, the world was crying for a much faster technology to transfer all this information among the numerous gadgets we have in our possession. Expect to see AC networking devices at GITEX this year. Tablets continue to buck the trend as PC sales in much of the world dwindle. Meant primarily for the consumer market, new apps, faster processing speeds and more robust security features are transforming them into work computers as well. Expect to see more and more tablets targeting the enterprise segment and if consumer interest elsewhere is anything to go 6

October 2012

by, tablets could soon become the go-to device for the mobile executive. After failing to make much of an impact in the several years they have been in the market, all-inone PCs could receive the much needed boost from Windows 8. With more and more AIOs adopting touch screen interfaces, they are a perfect match for Windows 8 enhanced touch screen experience. Manufacturers also seem to have found the perfect balance between the enterprise and the home user with AIOs. Employing the sleek design and form factor now familiar with home entertainment units and the technical capabilities of a traditional desktop, AIOs have the potential to gain market share in both these settings. The last few years have seen the growth of highly sophisticated custom made malware. Unlike their older versions which could easily be controlled by generic online security software, the new reincarnations call for specific security responses. Although now restricted to organized groups, they will surely make their way down the food chain and find themselves in the hands of the average cybercrime hobbyist. This means that the business owner employing several IT platforms will require numerous security applications just to keep pace. The cost overlays may be

daunting for many SMBs. Luckily, online security firms are working hard identifying these viruses and their solutions. System integration has reached its climax as tech giants realize relying on traditional product lines won’t cut it as competition heats up and hardware sales stagnate. Over the last five years, major vendors like Dell, HP and others have been on a buying binge acquiring software and solutions companies all over the world. The result has been a serious realignment of the global IT industry with entire IT eco-systems from networking to storage to server system and security being controlled by a few firms. For enterprises, the benefits are manifold at least in the short term. Savings, convenience, unified solutions providers, et al. In the long run, there’s always the risk the market could monopolised by a few extremely large multi-nationals putting at risk competition and innovation. No one can predict what new technologies we’ll see in the coming year. One thing we can all be certain of is that when we publish this booklet next year, we’ll be talking about completely different topics and catchwords. And the consumer will be the happier for it equipped with newer and enhanced user experiences.

Cybercrime is the bane of online networks everywhere. Kaspersky’s Middle East and Turkey Managing Director Tarek Kuzbari, discusses how the company manages to keep up

Tarek Kuzbari Managing Director, Middle East & Turkey

Briefly discuss the rising cases of custom and targeted malware and what businesses can do to protect themselves? Targeted attacks are often highly-sophisticated, but they typically start by exploiting human weaknesses, i.e. tricking people to click on an e-mail attachment or links, or trying to get them to reveal information that helps attackers to get a foothold in the organisation, e.g. a network login. The technical aspect of the response to this kind of threats is more obvious, of course. Businesses must deploy a range of technical solutions in order to secure their systems - anti-malware, firewall, encryption, data leakage prevention, etc. What security solutions does Kaspersky offer to counter these custom threats? We offer a whole range of effective corporate security solutions for the most popular operating 8

Kaspersky Doubles Down as Threats Rise systems specifically designed for different types of businesses. The company’s product range covers all of the main information security requirements that businesses and large state organizations have to adhere to, including: excellent protection levels, adaptability to changing circumstances, scalability, compatibility with different platforms, high performance, high fault tolerance, ease of use and high value. Discuss new security technology from Kaspersky One of the primary advantages of Kaspersky Lab’s corporate range is the easy, centralized management provided by Kaspersky Security Centre that extends to the entire network regardless of the number and type of platforms used. More than that, we have designed targeted security solutions to deliver intelligent protection for specific

components of corporate network including workstations, file servers, mail servers and Internet gateways. One of the latest developments is Kaspersky for Virtualization which is an agentless anti-malware solution that provides a more efficient way to protect virtualised infrastructure . What are the most serious threats in the Middle East and Africa region and what specific solutions do you have for them? The world is now a very small place . As a result, we all face the same kinds of threat. However, there are differences in the level of awareness of malware and its uses. In Europe and North America, where IT has formed a key part of business for longer, there is a greater experience of threats and the security measures needed to combat them, compared to the Middle East and other areas of the

Belkin’s New Game Plan Youssef El-Arif Sales Manager, MEA, Belkin

Belkin has established itself as a true contender in the computer accessory business. MEA Sales Manager Youssef El Arif looks discusses how the company has managed to stay on top

Briefly discuss the AC Wi-Fi networking technology by Belkin Belkin is to launch routers in the new AC Wi-Fi technology in Mid-October with the AC 1000 and AC 1200 routers. Current wireless-N, 802.11ac comes in three tiers, based on the number of streams. The more streams, the more bandwidth a device can handle. For example, Wireless-N has caps of 150Mbps with single-stream, 300Mbps with dual-stream, and 450Mbps with three-stream. AC Wi-Fi connections on the other hand are set to be about three times faster, starting with 450Mbps in singlestream, 900Mbps (dual-stream) and 1.3Gbps (three-stream)

Some are downloading movies as others play online games or stream music. The result is that routers are worked to the maximum. So there’s a definite need for high end devices to handle all the bandwidth strain. We have seen this even during GITEX Shopper with bargain shoppers still demanding our higher-end models.

Discuss Lenovo’s regional strategy? We are in the PC+ era with new devices providing different user experiences but with the heart of a PC. At Lenovo, we have a range of products on Windows as well as Android platforms such as tablets and touch screen AIOs in addition to our conventional desktops and laptops. According to Gartner, the region will experience 89% growth in tablets in the region this year. We have launched a range of tablets that are showing good customer reception in the MEA and we expect to be part of this boom. Mobility is becoming increasingly important for enterprises as it is for the general consumer. Discuss Lenovo’s solutions for this segment. 20

The ThinkPad tablet is an enterprise-level tablet based on the Android Icecream Sandwich 4.0. It comes loaded with an inbuilt security suite including TPM full encryption to protect data. A digital pen allows for digital signatures to further secure documents. It is also encoded with anti-virus software for further protection. We also have a Windows 8- ThinkPad tablet set to launch in November which I expect will strike just the right balance between work and play. We are also working with developers to develop enterpriseready apps. Windows 8 will give the ThinkPad customer a different user experience and applications. Security is becoming crucial with the rise of even more sophisticated malware. Discuss Lenovo’s security solution for its devices Lenovo has at hand the hardware and software innovation to curb vulnerabilities and secure data.

Security features in many of our devices include password authentication, TPM encryption while we work with security companies and include anti-virus encoded in our systems. We are also offering our customers cloud back-up if their data is lost. With BYOD becoming more commonplace, how can enterprises take advantage of employees bringing their own computers to work and still secure their systems? Consummerization of IT means the divide that existed between work and personal devices is being closed. There are network security issues that have to be resolved first. Our new tablets have features that allow them to be safely used in the enterprise. Features include manoeuvrability features enabling the IT manager for instance to see how many and what category of devices are being used within the network.

With BYOD, we are seeing tablets getting more and more into the workplace. Does Dell have any strategies for tablets’ applications within the enterprise? According to research 88% of IT managers have considered the consummerization of personal devices within the enterprise as the concept of BYOD gains momentum. At Dell, we now employ enterprise friendly data encryption and pro-servers for large corporates. Discuss some of your popular product lines in the region Our Inspiron special edition is set to become the centre for home entertainment with higher storage capacity for movies and music, HD, HiFi sound, and improved interface. The XPS on the other hand offers a consumer platform with best22

in-class security mobility. The 13 inch screen tablet is sleek and portable enough offering up to 8hrs battery life. The tablet is encased in a carbon fibre edge to edge exterior to make sure no heat passes through. Mobile devices face increasing security threats making them as vulnerable as desktops and netbooks before them. What security features is Dell adopting to check these threats? Data protection is the main reason made many IT managers reluctant to allow personal devices in the workplace. We are using TPM on all tablets for deadlock data encryption which makes it next to impossible to steal data. We are now offering 15 months McAfee internet security software in all the devices we are selling as well as pro support from Dell.

How does Dell intend to maintain its position in the competitive market that is the Middle East? We are keen to meet customers’ needs in entertainment and business solutions. One way we are doing this is by evolving with customers’ needs. For instance storage needs for customers are increasing with the increase of photos, movies, music and games. Conversely we are now offering devices with standard 2TB storage capacity for many consumer devices. These also come with higher graphics with 2GB graphic cards. We have also moved to manufacture a range of accessories including branded wireless keyboards, mice and speakers available in retail outlets. All these peripherals incorporate enhanced design and form factor.

Spotlight | SanDisk

SanDisk Looks to the Future As amounts of data escalate, SanDisk is responding with technology geared towards faster speeds and bigger storage capacity. Tareq Husseini, Sales Director for SanDisk, MENA shares his company’s future strategy. Tareq Husseini Sales Director, SanDisk, MENA

SanDisk ReadyCache promises to deliver the performance benefits of solid state technology at a fraction of the cost of total hard drive replacement. Please discuss. SanDisk ReadyCache technology offers the benefits of a solid-state drive at a fraction of the cost. Instead of upgrading the whole system, clients can just upgrade their systems at a far lower cost. ReadyCache easily integrates with the existing hard drive and allows one to accelerate their desktop computer without replacing the hard drive. It enables faster boot/shut down times and improved application response times. Current hard disks cannot cope with the powerful Intel chipsets. ReadyCache then comes in to boost the system 26

October 2012

by upgrading the power of the Intel chipsets. It’s also simple and easy to install through simple plug and play operation without the need to reinstall OS or clone HDD. The ExpressCache software by Condusiv Technologies uses advanced caching algorithms to automatically manage your data and increase overall performance. However, SanDisk ReadyCache is not a HDD replacement. Frequently used data is cached on SSD while HDD maintains full copy of all data. What SanDisk products are strongest in the region? We are seeing SanDisk products gain popular among system integrators who need require USB card readers and high performance 3.0 USB drives. There are also general consumers whose requirements for high performance cards are growing driven by a surge in DSLR cameras and a large number of photos. Young people and businesses are also driving the sector as

they demand high performance mobile cards. We at SanDisk have dedicated mobile cards for Android and iOS based phones. SSDs are becoming increasingly popular. Do you see them replacing HDDs completely or are we going to see hybrids moving forward? Speed and efficiency is driving the popularity of SSDs. Normal server systems for instance require up to six racks that require up to55KW of power. SSDs on the other hand just require one rack with up to 10 times less energy consumption. SSDs also offer 60% higher performance then HDDs. The technology is going through the normal process of transition. In the long run, HDDs will give way to SSDs. In the meantime, we are seeing a lot of hybrids that perform just like HDDs in that they contain rotating disks and consume as much energy costs but offer higher performance than ordinary HDDs.

480GB SanDisk Extreme Solid State Drive

With mobility becoming increasingly widespread, discuss SanDisk’s solutions in this segment SanDisk is a vertically integrated company with its own facilities and technologies. We are a leader in controller technology. To that end, we have recently acquired companies with leadership in SSDs including Pliant, Schooner and Softplus. Technology leadership is important in bringing value to our customers. We cover three nodes of technology including storage with our SSDs, USB drives and micro SD cards product lines. We also cater to data networks for cellular companies as well as client devices including netbooks, ultrabooks and tablets on both Android and iOS platforms. With security becoming such a major issue for enterprises, discuss your security applications within your storage hardware space? Client devices such as USBs are particularly prone to security breaches e.g. when people lose them or give them away which could jeopardize personal as well as company data. With SanDisk 128-bit AES encryption, USBs data is protected even if the USBs are misplaced. SanDisk SecureAccess software creates a password-protected folder on your SanDisk USB flash drive, so you can share selected files on

your drive without exposing your most sensitive ones. We also offer customers access to our cloud for data back-up and recovery. What new technology do we expect from SanDisk in the storage space? SanDisk is built on innovations. We own and license technologies with 10% of our revenue coming from licensing agreements to OEMs. We dedicate in the excess of USD500 million every year to R&D to develop with the next technology. SanDisk is currently developing flash memory cards based on the new CFast2.0 specification introduced recenlty by the CompactFlash Association (CFA). The nextgeneration 4K video applications which can produce videos with incredibly high resolutions and large file sizes becomes more widespread. Digital cameras are also expected to become more powerful, with the ability to capture images at greater than 40MP resolution. The CFast2.0 specification features theoretical performance of up to 600MB/ sec, four times faster than the highest-performance CompactFlash memory cards. SanDisk is currently sampling CFast2.0 memory cards to camera manufacturers as they design and optimize their next-generation host devices for the new specification.

The SanDisk Extreme SSD can achieve sequential read speeds of up to 550MB/s. It can also provide quick file transfers during video editing and data backup thanks to the 510MB/s sequential write speed. Additionally, the SanDisk Extreme SSD can deliver random read/write speeds of up to 23K/83K input/ output operations per second (IOPS), enabling quicker data access. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), the SanDisk Extreme SSD has no moving parts, minimizing physical wear and tear. The drive is rated at 1.4 to 2.5 million hours mean time before failure (MTBF).The SanDisk Extreme SSD is designed to withstand shock and vibration giving it an additional layer of protection. The drive uses much less energy than a traditional HDD, placing less of a burden on your computer’s power supply and cooling system. The SSD also runs more quietly than a hard drive, reducing your computer’s total noise output. Key Features: • Faster read/write speeds for enhanced computing performance • Available in capacities up to 480GB • Ideal for gaming and other rich multimedia applications • Solid state architecture resists wear and data corruption • Low power consumption

Global Solutions for MEA Logitech introduces new product category for unified communications, the all-in-one audio and video ConferenceCam. The BCC950 ConferenceCam enables small groups to collaborate through voice and video on PCs and Mac computers. Eric Kintz Vice President & GM, Logitech

Logitech recently introduced a new product category for unified communications (UC) and web conferencing: the all-in-one audio and video ConferenceCam. The Logitech BCC950 ConferenceCam is the first communications tool to combine a full HD webcam with a high-quality, omni-directional full-duplex speakerphone in one USB device, enabling small groups to collaborate in conference rooms, closed offices or shared work spaces. The BCC950 ConferenceCam features a full HD webcam with motorized pan, tilt and zoom to easily bring everyone into the picture, either from a control pad on the device or with a convenient remote control. The control pad or the remote can also be used to answer calls, end calls, adjust the volume and mute the microphone. Logitech is a world leader in 36

products that connect people to the digital experiences they care about. Spanning multiple computing, communication and entertainment platforms, Logitech’s combined hardware and software enable or enhance digital navigation, music and video entertainment, gaming, social networking, audio and video communication over the Internet, video security and homeentertainment control. Founded in 1981, Logitech International is a Swiss public company listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange (LOGN) and on the Nasdaq Global Select Market (LOGI). Optimized for Microsoft Lync and Skype Certified, the BCC950 ConferenceCam works with most UC and video platforms. With a wide 78-degree field of view and 180-degree video pan, support for 1080p, 30fps HD through plug-and-play UVC H.264 video technology, and a speakerphone that allows everyone in a meeting to hear and be heard clearly from up to eight feet away, the ConferenceCam helps remove the pain point of groups clustering around a computer to be

seen and understood during UC calls. Weighing only 20 ounces, the ConferenceCam can be carried easily around an office, allowing for spontaneous meetings anywhere users can place a computer. “The power of unified communications is driving collaboration across multiple locations and multiple devices, giving people the flexibility to work together wherever they are,” said Giovanni Mezgec, general manager for Lync at Microsoft Corp. The Logitech BCC950 ConferenceCam expands the benefits of UC in the enterprise by providing a simple-to-install, high-quality solution for small-group meetings. “We have a number of remote workers who value face-to-face time with their colleagues in the office, but we haven’t had an appropriate tool for smallgroup video meetings,” said Jim Hayes, IT operations manager for 24HourFlex, an employee benefits solutions provider in Aurora, Colo. “We’ve been testing pre-production units of the Logitech BCC950 Conference-

We can now quickly and easily add audio and video conferencing to any room with an affordable device that doesn’t compromise on call quality,” Hayes added. The Logitech BCC950 ConferenceCam is ideal for meetings of one to four or more people, whether in conference rooms or individual offices. A high-quality webcam sensor and Logitech RightLight 2 technology improves visual quality in low light and backlit situations, while a razor-sharp Carl Zeiss lens and

the camera’s autofocus feature allow sharing of detailed documents and other visuals up close, without losing image quality. “The workplace is rapidly evolving toward smaller and more virtual teams, yet communication tools have not kept pace,” said Eric Kintz, vice president and general manager of Logitech for Business, adding “In looking at the needs of our customers, we saw a gap in solutions that bring audio and videoconferencing to small groups. The Logitech BCC950 ConferenceCam fills that gap by combining a webcam and speakerphone into a single
