'DECREASING SOCIAL INEQUALITIES THROUGH SUSTAINABLE URBANISM- A CASE STUDY OF DEPRIVED AREAS IN NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE'
In many cities around the world, the challenge of repairing social inequalities is a real and pressing issue. Many civic aspects in a city have been deprived of public services as a result of the UK’s austerity measures (Townshend, 2019). Newcastle, the regional capital of North East England, has witnessed particularly severe public sector cutbacks. As a result, rich communities built their public places and services through alternative resources and private groups, leaving the poorest, least wealthy communities to fend for themselves in the absence of public services and a good framework of Urban design. The design thesis largely focused on impoverished area in Newcastle upon Tyne and using sustainable urbanism strategies to revitalize the urban area such that it becomes socially equitable and cohesive like the other communities.
