The par 3 14th might be the most stunningly-beautiful hole you’ll ever play.
There is no other publication that delivers more golfers in Washington than Cascade Golfer, the publication created in partnership with Puetz Golf.
KAUAI CALLING Is
Excuse the lengthy retelling of a story I’ve bored family and friends with ever since it happened. Unlike most stories of a similar nature, however, this one needs no dressing up or bogus padding. I mean, it was the perfect shot and the ball was going in…until it didn’t. The majestic 14th hole is definitely the highlight of the round, but the Jack Nicklaus-designed layout, which MSN Travel has named one of the 12 most beautiful in the world and which winds through mango and guava groves before reaching the cliffs, has numerous other memorable snapshots. The three other par 3s are especially good, but some of the two and three-shot holes here are among the best in all of Hawaii, not just the Garden Isle. The 331-yard 16th receives almost as much attention as the 14th, and is a particular favorite of the designer. “The 16th is a standout,” confirms Nicklaus. “It challenges you to make the right club selection on the tee. If your tee ball travels down the slot, then you have a chance to drive it on the green and putt for an eagle. A tee shot miss and you have an awkward pitch to the green. The smart play is usually to hit a hybrid or a 3-iron, leaving you a little wedge down to the green.” The green sits adjacent to Kukii Point with its 22-foot concrete lighthouse (sister lighthouse to the 115-year-old, 86-foot

n 36 years of trying, and after maybe 10,000 tee shots on ace-able holes, I’ve yet to savor the singular joy of holing my tee shot. Twelve years ago on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, however, I came about as close as you can get. The awesome par-3 14th hole on the Ocean Course at Hokuala is one of those pin-up holes you often see on calendars and just sort of gawp at for a while. In person, you stand on the tee and assume you must have stepped into a parallel universe for a moment. It’s not real somehow, a make-believe computer-generated representation of your most vivid golf dream.
38
From the back tees it plays 210 yards, downhill slightly, from one lush promontory to another with the occasionally white-capped, but usually deep blue, waters of Nawiliwili Bay below and the diagonally oriented green backed by palm trees up ahead. The first time I was lucky enough to visit this supernatural spot, and after the obligatory cooing and murmured disbelief, I pulled a hybrid from my bag and met the ball squarely on the sweet spot. The other three guys in the group were nice enough to compliment the swing and the strike before we all fell silent, and just watched, wondering how well this shot might turn out.

Hokuala has one of the longest stretches of oceanfront golf property anywhere in Hawaii.
Hokuala is a tropical treasure for snowbirds

It was on a good line the whole way and seemed to rise and fall on the exact arc required for the ball to land just short of the pin. It pitched maybe 10 yards from the hole, bounced lightly and began trundling towards the cup. It looked dead center, even from 200 yards away. You could sense the four of us hold our collective breath for a second, ready to burst as the ball disappeared. The anguished cries of disbelief as the dratted pill made a last-second squirm to the right, catch the lip, circle the cup and come to a stop maybe three maddening, exasperating, disturbing inches from glory could probably have been heard in the clubhouse a few hundred yards away.

ow did he get here? How did Macklemore, who admits to a destructive and addictive lifestyle growing up on Seattle’s inner-city streets, become a rapper with world-acclaimed hits and a slew of Grammy awards on his mantle? Talent. Yes. He can sing. He can compose. He can stir an audience. But there’s more. There must be more for a guy, born as Ben Haggerty, who matriculated through Garfield and Nathan Hale High Schools. It takes passion, irrepressible passion. He had to overcome the novelty of being a white rapper to prove he’s legit. He had to battle his self-confessed addiction to drugs and alcohol, honestly incorporating his struggles, even his relapses, into his music. He had to press on even when his long performances were short of people. He did it while taking on seemingly un-rappable, socially-conscious subjects like addiction (‘Starting Over’), gay marriage (‘Same Love’) and wanton consumerism (‘Wings’). His wife, Tricia, who has stood by him and supported him through all his rises and falls for more than 15 years, is the beneficiary of Haggerty’s extraordinary passion and dedication. The couple, married in 2015, now share their lives with their three children — two girls, Colette and Sloane, and newborn son Hugo. 42

hat clubs and balls have improved greatly over time isn’t in dispute. And though the introduction of advancements has certainly accelerated this century, the speed at which the upgrades have appeared since the game was first played has been fairly steady and manageable for the layman. What’s happened in the hitech distance-measuring, stat-keeping, launch-monitoring, caddie-capable device world though is frankly astonishing and has left most Gen-Xers and older shaking their heads. It is incredible what today’s devices can do and these gadgets are both wearable or something you hold or attach to your bag/cart. The new Voice Caddie T9, which calls itself the most advanced, ultra-premium smart golf GPS watch available, comes equipped with a color touchscreen, and gives yardages to the green front/center/back, offering advanced features such as ‘Active Green’ (improves accuracy). It also comes with ‘V-Algorithm’ (which calculates slope), and green undulation (indicated with, would you believe, a heat map and arrows showing the direction of break – available on 13,000 U.S. courses and 15,000 worldwide). It has a Practice Tempo Mode, tracks all shots, a course layout view with yardages to all bunkers and water bodies, customizable pin placement, course and green zoom, and is completely fee-free. The T9 is compact and is very light. It’s available in black (and limited numbers of gray). The display has a diameter of 1.2 inches. Battery is a rechargeable Lithium-Polymer unit.
s a couple of reviewers on its website point out, Sun Mountain, based in Missoula, Mont., has perfected the stand bag in recent years and the 4.5LS is another of its highly acclaimed designs. Weighing in at just 4.5 pounds, it has an adjustable EZ Fit Dual-Strap system (straps over both shoulders), nine easy-access pockets including a roomy clothes pocket, hydration pouch, multiple accessory pockets and a water-resistant, velour-lined valuables pocket. The Air Flow hip pad which is designed for increased ventilation and lumbar support is a comforting touch. It comes in six colorways (Black/ Carbon, Navy/White/Red, Moss-Sage/Inferno, Black, Charcoal-Spruce/Aztec, Navy/Cobalt) but two additional designs warrant special mention. The first celebrates America’s favorite pastime (besides golf, of course) with a red stich pattern up the two side garment pockets on a white body with blue and red trim. And in a tribute to Jackie Robison, the number 42 appears on the front ball pocket. The other depicts Bigfoot on a black and green body and raises the question did the Yeti exist and, more importantly, does it/he/she play golf? The baseball and Bigfoot designs are also available on the company’s C-130 cart bag. The baseball and Yeti limited release bags were co-designed by the National Golf Buyer’s Association, of which Puetz Golf and Sun Mountain are a Jake Magraw part of. “They are only available through an NGBA retailer,” says Puetz Golf General Manager Mike Livingston. “I believe we’re at 40 members across the country.” Jake Magraw

$249.99 he majority of amateur golfers rejoiced the day hybrids were invented. They were easier to hit than both long irons and lofted fairway-woods and helped the average golfer hit it 180-210 yards with some confidence. Hybrids launched easily and high and had the loft and power to hit the ball a good distance, making it possible to hit long par 4s and even short par 5s in two. Some didn’t much like the shape, spin and launch angle of the hybrid though, so manufacturers designed driving irons which looked more like a traditional long iron and launched the ball a bit lower, but which were still significantly more forgiving than the old long irons. As TaylorMade says, they gave golfers another option between their shortest fairway wood and longest iron. The Stealth UDI (Ultimate Driving Iron) has a Tour-inspired shape and a CG positioned to promote a penetrating ball flight but create enough spin to make shaping shots possible. The DHY (Driving Hybrid) has a lower-profile head and wider, cambered sole. The DHY is the more ‘game-improvement’ of the two and will launch the ball a bit higher but still generate good distance. Both clubs have an ultra-thin 4140 high-strength steel face and Thru-Slot Speed Pocket to help the face flex and ensure maximum distance, even when contact is made low on the face. Both also have a hollow body that’s filled with TaylorMade’s SpeedFoam Air which makes contact feel so much better than it ever did with those old long irons.

Seattle also has benefitted from his passion, especially its thrift stores and sports teams. Haggerty, as Macklemore, and music collaborator Ryan Lewis have performed in front of Mariners crowds since Ichiro was still a BlueWave. He wrote a charitable song (‘My Oh My’) dedicated to the late great team broadcaster, Dave Niehaus. He gave the Seahawks a private concert in 2014. The Seattle Sounders added him to its soccer ownership group in 2019 and this spring the Seattle Kraken brought him into its hockey ownership group. He has emerged as Seattle’s favored son. But how did he get here? How did a rapper find his way into a Northwest regional golf magazine? It’s no secret. It’s the same traits — the passion and indefatigable personality that carried him to the No. 1 song on Billboard’s Hot 100 and Best New Artist in 2014 also brought him to his first tee. He took up the game in 2017 and threw himself into it, as he is prone to do. He joined two local country clubs. His handicap has dropped to 11. 36 This February, he was good enough to play as a celebrity partner with PGA Tour professional Lanto Griffin at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. And, as we’ve come to realize with any Ben Haggerty pursuit, he doesn’t just take something on, he envelops it in a way that doesn’t deny who he is or where he’s from. His fascination with golf has taken him back to his old Capitol Hill neighborhood, bricks and mortar. This spring, Five Iron Golf, which specializes in indoor golf entertainment centers around the country, opened its first West Coast location at 1125 11th Ave. on Seattle’s Capitol Hill. Haggerty is the co-owner of the 12,000-squarefoot facility that features 12 TrackMan golf simulators. It caters to the casual golf fan and, basically, anything casual. No pretenses. No pretensions. Come as you are. Folks hit golf balls into a large flat screen that records not only swing speeds and hitting angles but shows where the balls end up on an animated golf course. You can play for improvement, entertainment or even for a coin or crypto in friendly competitions and environments. Haggerty, who is the Five Iron brand ambassador, likes the idea of making golf more accessible and less staid. “It doesn’t matter if you never played golf before or if you’re a scratch golfer, Five Iron’s mission is all about getting more people involved in the game,” Haggerty said in promoting the opening. “I love having them in my city and I’m excited to work with the team to grow the game.” He’d also love to have all those coming into Five Iron looking good, something that has taken the Seattle rapper into uncharted territory in the golf world. Through his golf apparel company — Bogey Boys which he started two years ago — Haggerty has turned modern golf fashion into a Wayback Machine with throwback styles from the 1970s and 80s. He loves the timeless style of, among others, the always elegantly dressed Arnold Palmer. His designs mix plaids, stripes, checkerboard and tartan prints with bold colors. He has become an instant icon, sort of the Pierre Cardigan of golf fashion.
rough to protect the greens and fairways). Whatever else is added to the attractions at Hokuala, though, it’s doubtful anything will ever surpass the Ocean Course itself — a course of which Jack Nicklaus is justly proud. “I put forth my best effort in the design process,” says the Golden Bear. It certainly shows. I can hardly wait for the opportunity to play Hokuala again, and especially the 14th hole. It owes me one. Visit hokualakauai.com to see all this island jewel has to offer.

The 450-acre property of which the golf course is a very special part, was bought by Colorado-based Timbers Resorts for $60 million in 2015 since when the management company with 17 properties in the U.S., Mexico, Italy and the Virgin Islands, has made substantial improvements, giving the place a more authentic Hawaiian ambiance and changing the business model to one based predominantly, though not entirely, on luxury residential ownership (whole and fractional) rather than hotel/timeshare. Vacation rentals are available for guests who will savor every second at this amazing place and probably take a peek at least at the cost of ownership, you know, just out of interest. Among the newest additions to the extensive list of amenities on offer at Hokuala, which already includes a two-tiered infinity-edge pool overlooking the ocean, spa services and wellness programs, 16 miles of accessible trails, easy access to Kalapaki Beach, oceanfront dining, a Keiki Club for children and full-service concierge, are Tom Freestone’s Hui Aloha Huaka’i tours of the Ocean Course. “To hui is to circle or surround,” says Freestone, the PGA Director of Operations. “Guests can take a tour of the course where they learn about the culture of the island, the flora, the fauna, the myths and the legends. We give them the tools to embrace the Aloha spirit.” A portion of the proceeds goes towards funding the Hawaiiana curriculum for Kauai kids. Foot golf, on nine of the Ocean Course’s 18 holes, has been available since November 2019. The par-36 loop measures 1,039 yards with holes ranging in length from 50 to 223 yards (21-inch-diameter cups are cut into the

How used to media attention have you become since winning last year? I think I have gotten more used to the media attention and become more comfortable since the Am. A few minutes after I won, I was told my life would change forever. I laughed thinking they were kidding, but it really did change. The USGA is a very prestigious golf association that’s known around the world. With that, there were a lot of people who were watching the tournament on TV so I’ve had random people recognize me while traveling or when I’ve been in the grocery store, and that’s pretty neat.

McCormick Woods has been wooing golfers since 1986
Has much changed at the University of Kentucky for you or is it business as usual? Kentucky is still the same, very business as usual. My team and I have been focusing on our season and getting after our goals. All of us are extremely competitive and we love seeing each other succeed, so it makes everyone better. It’s a very special team here at Kentucky.
B
Have you visited this part of the country before? I have never been to Washington! The closest I’ve been is California for the U.S. Bjorke, manager of McCormick Woods Golf Club, Women’s Open last year at Olympic. However that’s it. I’ve actually neverjorn been to anygeneral of haswhat beenit’sworking the states on the top left border of the U.S. so I’m extremely excited to see like. at the woodsy Port Orchard property for 26 of the 36 years the course has been open. Perhaps the most dramatic change he has seen is something that’s essentially unnoticeable. “This was built in the mid-1980s (1986), so the trees that were

A Bucket with GM • Bjorn Bjorke Toughest Tee Shot — 2nd hole It might be No. 2 from the white tees (great par 5 playing 475 yards) because it’s a long carry. There’s a lot of long grass. They’ve let the fescue grow out there. It may not be a real long carry. It’s mostly mental and it’s tight, making people miss it a bit.
PAR
Best Par 3 — 7th hole It’s the shortest par 3 at 122 yards from the white tees. It’s slightly uphill and over water. It’s only about 80 yards to clear the water. The front of the green is 100 yards. It looks good, very aesthetic. It’s a severe and unique green. There’s a large grass bunker in front, 8-to-10-foot deep. The green slopes back to front pretty severely.
Favorite Hole — 5th hole I like No. 5. It’s a par 4 and plays 398 yards from the black tees. It’s an elevated tee. You hit down to a pond. To take that on it’s about 280 yards. Or you can lay up short to a flat part of the fairway. Hit up on the right and you risk the pond. The green is a skinny hour-glass shape with a swamp wrapped around the whole back and right side. You really must try to manage both (drive, approach) shots.
Emergency Nine — front or back? Bjorn couldn’t make that choice but since all the holes he mentioned here are on the front nine, that might be a clue.

ride of ownership is strong among Scotty Cameron users. Those fortunate to have one in the bag treat theirs much like Judge Smails did his own Billy Baroo in ‘Caddyshack’ — a revered, precisely engineered tool that evokes love and devotion. The Californian putter-maker, who introduced his first putter 31 years ago, released the original high Moment of Inertia (MOI) Phantom X mallet line in 2019. Since then numerous different models have been added to the family. This year, seven new shapes became available in April and three more will arrive in June. The majority of the Phantom X line combines lightweight, central 6061 aluminum bodies with steel in the heel and toe to create stable heads that refuse to twist at impact (propelling your ball offline), no matter how far from the sweetspot you strike the ball — obviously the closer the better but mallets, and the Phantom X in particular, give you a pretty big margin for error. The sole-plate X is designed to make it easy to set the putter squarely to the target and flush on the ground. The new putters feature a new, textured grip and new graphics, and the faces are milled 303 Stainless Steel that produces a firm, satisfying feel. The X5 and 5.5 have been redesigned and the X7, 7.5 and 12 updated. The X9 and 9.5 are brand new. Hi-Bend, lowbend and straight shafts together with multiple alignment styles make it easy to find a putter that fits you perfectly.
That is probably No. 8, a shorter par 4 (black tees, 384 yards). You don’t have to hit a driver, but you can. Most people do. That’ll put you within about 100 yards. Or you can lay up at 120-150 yards.

ING, founded by Seattle native Karsten Solheim who attended the University of Washington, began life making high-MOI putters, progressed to equally high-MOI irons (Eye 2, Zing, etc.), makes drivers with the highest MOI in the game (G425 MAX) and has also been making highly acclaimed wedges for many years. The Glide 4.0 replaces the Glide 3.0 (see how that works?) and is the best-looking Glide wedge yet with its blade styling and attractive Hydropearl chrome 2.0 finish which reduces glare as well as flyers from the rough in damp conditions. A wedge needs more than good looks though — these are the all-important scoring clubs after all. There are four grind options — Standard, Wide, Thin and high-toe ‘E’ that suit all swing shapes, angles of attack and different turf conditions (firm or soft and lush), and the soft 8620 carbon-steel body has an elastomer CTP insert that gives a soft, responsive feel at impact. The grooves in the lower-lofted clubs (46-, 50- and 52-degrees), which you typically use for full shots from around 70 to 110 yards, are milled with a 20-degree sidewall and a .005-inch edge radius while the higher lofts (54-, 56-, 58- and 60-degrees), used for shorter shots around the green, are milled to a .004-inch edge radius with a 28-degree sidewall to impart more spin. The new ‘Emery’ face blast adds texture to the clubface, creating more friction between the club and ball which produces more spin and a slightly lower launch which adds up to more control. Glide wedges are popular and we suggest you pick up yours sooner than later.

e’re in full-swing mode now. The diehards, radicals and fanatics have been at it since January when snow lay on the ground or frost delayed starting times, and three or four layers were only just enough to survive all the way to the 18th green. Others joined in as the worst of the weather abated and the grass began to show signs of life once more. But now, as the sun finally seems set for another glorious Washington summer and temperatures soar all the way into the 60s and, dare we say, 70s. We are all emerging from our quiet, closeted clubhouses eager to do battle with this confounding game which continues to cause us a fair amount of frustration and distress but which provides more than enough glorious, memorable moments to remain firmly in the black with enough credit to keep us coming back again and again. Those that are just now returning to the links might not be aware how active the golf equipment industry has been so far this year, suffice to say the wheels have continued to turn despite the global supply chain issues that have wreaked their own brand of havoc. Manufacturers are still pushing envelopes coming up with innovative gear that enables us to enjoy the game even more than we already did and which guarantees a load more of those glorious, memorable moments. And Puetz Golf has got it all. Here are some of our favorite products that will help make it another great season.

obra Golf has added black editions of its 3D and classic Vintage Series putters, identical to the original clubs except for the sleek, no-glare finish. The 3D putters were first introduced in May 2021 and were typical of the sort of highly adventurous and innovative clubs Cobra have been coming out with in recent years. The 3D putter features a 3D-printed, nylon, lattice cartridge created using HP’s advanced Multi Jet Fusion technology which sounds great but does perform an important role — optimize weight distribution within the putter chassis and, thus, increase the club’s MOI which, as we know, makes the club more stable and forgiving. In the 3D Series, the original Grandsport-35 plumber, SuperNova single-bend, and Agera single-bend models were joined by the Agera 30 and Supernova 20 and 30 at the end of April. And new hosel styles were added to the King Vintage Series line which appeared at the same time as the 3D line and features SIK Aluminum face inserts with Descending Loft Technology (DLT) as well as an Adjustable Weighting System that allows for simple weight adjustments (additional weights sold separately). The oversized mallet King Cuda, King Cuda-40, oversized blade King Widesport and oversize mallet King Stingray also became part of the King Vintage Series line which included the classic blade King Sport-45, King Sport-60, fang-shape King Nova, KING Nova-40, oversized mallet King Stingray and King Stingray-40. King Collection putters come standard with a Cobra SuperStroke Traxion Tour 2.0 grip and KBS Tour 120 shaft.

Golfers have appreciated the care and maintenance the staff has devoted to the course, complicated by the much higher than normal rainfall this spring. Bjorke said coming out of the pandemic “really increased the number of golfers on the course. We’re down from last year but still way up overall. It’s exciting.”

hambers Bay will host its fourth USGA Championship August 8-14 when 156 of the best women amateur golfers in the world descend on University Place. They will compete for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship title and one of the great trophies in world sport – the magnificent Robert Cox Cup named for the Scot and member of British Parliament who donated it in 1896 making it the longest-serving original USGA championship trophy. Its current holder is Jensen Castle, a University of Kentucky junior who pulled off quite a comeback in last year’s championship at Westchester Country Club, just outside New York City. After a seven-over-par 79 in Monday’s first round of stroke play qualifying, the 20-year-old from South Carolina needed a one-under 71 in round two just to make it to a 12-women play-off for a spot in the knockout rounds that would decide the eventual winner. She entered match play seeded 63rd and won six straight matches defeating the University of Arizona’s Yu-Chiang Hou 2&1 in the 36-hole final. With five months to go before she defends her title, Castle answered a few questions for us between Marketing/Management classes and golf practice.

What makes it cool: They got the meat. It’s hard to find a better roundender than an array of smoked and BBQ meat menu selections. “We can cook about 1,000 pounds of meat at a time,” says Connie Deorsak, Billy Baroo’s manager. “We’re known for our good 19th Hole food. The custom wood-smoker is located just off the kitchen and adjacent to the 9th hole (golfers are teased by the inviting aroma). The smoker yields such specialties as BBQ pork ribs, briskets and pulled pork as well as a whole chicken. On the side, you can get various Billy Baroo’s hot and BBQ sauces. You might want to open the full-meat deal with an appetizer such as a sour-dough bread bowl. And it’s just your luck that you also happen to be in the ‘Home of 20 Taps.’ Wash your meal and your round down with a frothy draft and sit on the wide wraparound porch overlooking the course. It’s there you settle into your perfect world, the view, the smells and the tastes. — Bob Sherwin

Newcastle also possesses the quintessential 19th Hole with the Wooly Toad. The richly appointed lounge looks like a private dining room at some of the ancient and venerable Scottish clubhouses such as Muirfield, Royal Troon or North Berwick. The Wooly Toad has a private sanctuary feel that makes you feel like you need to show your birth certificate, DNA evidence and at least two references to get in. But it is accessible to anyone who likes leather sofas, high ceilings, a private bar featuring an array of single malt scotches, and billiard and poker tables. You might be tempted to skip the back nine to get a head start at the Wooly Toad.

What makes it cool: The easy answer would be the ice. But it’s not as cool as you’d expect, at least not in the frozen water sense. It’s synthetic ice. “It’s kind of a slippery plastic surface,” says Josh Reines, the facility manager. You can twirl around on this artificial surface that never needs a Zamboni. But the rink operates primarily in the winter. When spring comes, the focus shifts from double Salchows to backswings and putting strokes. There’s the driving range, with 30 covered stalls and another 60 grass and/or artificial turf bays, the 18-hole mini golf layout and an area for club fitting, lessons, and Trackman rental. All the activities set you up for the 19th Hole at the Valley Grill. Take on the Beast Burger, an ample-sized sandwich filled with pepper jack cheese, grilled onions, jalapeno, bacon and chipotle aioli. The loaded fries make a delectable complement as it comes with roasted jalapeno, white cheddar, bacon and the spicy house sauce. The menu is stuffed with items made from scratch. It doesn’t mean you have to be a scratch player to enjoy. You can take your meal and brew and stretch out on the two large patios – with fire tables – or listen to music on the synthetic lawn area. — Bob Sherwin

What makes it cool: Oh, the view. It can’t be matched, copied, replaced, diminished, or dismissed. It’s 900 feet above the Sound and you can see cities, sites and natural features that are miles away. There are 350 acres within the property with two 18-hole layouts and the view can be gathered in from just about anywhere, especially from different clubhouse vantage points. The Calcutta Grill, the Wooly Toad lounge and the whole west-facing patio have all the elements to appeal to your senses, as well as your stomach. Another great view might be your plate sitting in front of you with the featured prime rib or other items such as shrimp & grits, wild mushroom risotto and Drunken Minterbrook Manila Clams. You also can take your scotch or suds to the grass outside adjacent to the 18th hole or the Rusty Putter, a real-grass mini-golf layout below the patio. It’s at ground level but you still have the high view of the same sites. — Bob Sherwin

t’s a view that must be seen. The Golf Club at Newcastle has one of the best vistas of any golf course in the state. Or any state. It contributes to a non-pareil ‘19th Hole’ that is so appealing you can skip the first 18 and go right to it. The view spans the entire length of the relatively treeless property with glimpses of Mt. Rainier as well as the Olympic and Cascade mountains. The only views that might be comparable would be if you were on top of one of those mountains. uring the hot summer months (you remember them), there are few places Washingtonians would rather be than in or near Lake Chelan. The narrow, 50-mile-long body of water which sits at 1,100 feet above sea level in the center of the state is a great spot for fishing, (with several species of trout calling the lake home), wine-tasting and numerous other adventures.

One course that might not have polled the most votes (the competition up here is pretty stiff) but ticks the three municipal golf course must-have boxes — welcoming, affordable and fun-to-play every time you visit — is the City of Chelan-owned Lake Chelan Golf Course, a couple of miles north of the city center, with beautiful views over Spaders Bay and the eastern reaches of the lake. The course first opened in 1964 and stretches to 6,459 yards from the back tees. The front is the longer and tougher of the two nines, so hopefully you’re warmed up and are ready to make some birdies on the back which includes five relatively short par 4s and a couple of par 5s under 500 yards. This isn’t arduous, relentless championship golf but entertaining, sporty vacation golf where you’re guaranteed to have a good time. Highlander Golf Course, opened in 2002 and about 50 minutes south on Highways 150, 97, 2 and 28, offers much the same type of golf as Lake Chelan but comes with a touch more pedigree. Situated 800 feet above the Columbia River, a short drive south and east of Wenatchee, Highlander was designed by John Steidel (Apple Tree, Canyon Lakes and Riverbend). Steidel’s efforts came to life by Jim Haley who built and shaped the course. Haley is one of the game’s most respected construction experts who worked with Pete Dye before spending 11 years with Rees Jones and then joining David McLay-Kidd to build the original course at Bandon Dunes and other nationally ranked courses like Nanea in Hawaii and TPC Stonebrae near San Francisco. Highlander saw some changes in 2011 when the last two holes were rebuilt, and four others altered to accommodate a new real estate development. Views from the course are pretty special and might even surpass those at Lake Chelan GC. The course tips out at just 5,899 yards — enough to be a genuine challenge for most vacationing golfers, but not so many you can’t relax for a moment and enjoy the incredible panoramas while you punch out a few pars.

t’s about time we published our top 10 public courses in Washington again. We did so every two years between 2013 and 2019, but then COVID hit, throwing a very large and very unwelcomed spanner in the works. Having found our feet again, and with the pandemic a thankfully receding blot in the rearview mirror (being careful not to proclaim it extinguished just yet), we thought it the perfect time to remind everyone how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful corner of the country and one that enjoys a phenomenal amount of great public golf. You don’t really need us to remind you of that, of course, but everyone loves making and debating lists and it gives us the opportunity to publish loads of gorgeous photographs of beautiful golf courses. Lists and great photos are always a sweet combination. Five years ago, Gamble Sands knocked Chambers Bay off what seemed like its established position of No. 1 — where the Robert Trent Jones/Jason Blasi design that hosted the U.S. Open in 2015 had placed the first two times we ran the contest. We wondered if Gamble Sands would now take over as a perennial No. 1, but Chambers Bay came storming back in 2019 claiming the top spot once again -- no doubt a result of Director of Agronomy Eric Johnson replacing the old fescue greens that never really thrived with excellent poa annua surfaces that have settled remarkably well. We could be totally wrong (it’s happened before), but the only way we see Gamble Sands overcoming the 80vote margin from last time and taking back the top spot is through the addition of Quicksands, the incredible 14hole par-3 course that was designed by David McLay-Kidd (who had designed the original Sand Course, of course) and opened in May of last year. It’s likely Quicksands is an extra amenity for golfers who are already at the resort to play the Sands Course. But there may be golfers out there in Cascadia who have discovered what Gamble has to offer the other way round — coming for what they’ve heard is a rollicking good ride round and staying to play the original, which they discover to be their favorite course in the state, if not the country. We’d be willing to bet a decent-sized sum of money that Chambers and Gamble will be battling it out for the top prize again, but we’re very curious to see what hap-

pens after you all chime in. While the top two duke it out above them, the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain, seven miles west of Bremerton, and Wine Valley, nine miles west of Walla Walla, have had a similarly intense struggle for the No. 3 spot for several years with Gold Mountain winning the race within a race in 2017 and Wine Valley taking over in 2019. The difference between them last time was just 48 votes and, with both as strong as ever, who knows which way that scuffle will swing? Before considering the rest of the top 10, it’s worth pausing and reflecting on the variety of golf we see just in the top four. You have a course most would consider a genuine links; a treeless, high-desert layout overlooking one of the country’s mightiest rivers; a stereo-typical Pacific Northwest course that cuts through dense, evergreen forest, and another fast-running, treeless venue crafted on top of an old alfalfa field. This quartet is as good as pretty much anything else in the country, but we don’t have to go through security lines and sit in uncomfortable seats with no leg room for three/four/five hours to play them. Further down the 2019 list, we see more good courses that anyone from outside of Washington would envy us for (okay, New Yorkers, Oregonians, Michiganders, Floridians, Californians, North Carolinians, Chicagolanders and Arizonans might like a word). Suncadia’s two public courses — Prospector and Rope Rider are both exceptional rounds. Then there’s Salish Cliffs, Palouse Ridge, White Horse and Washington National. And we’ve not even mentioned Trophy Lake, the Home Course, Loomis Trail, or Desert Canyon yet. Or Druid’s Glen, Apple Tree and Indian Canyon. We’re asking industry experts, people involved in the golf industry and well, everyone we know what they think. What gets your vote? We’d like to collate as many votes as possible to get as clear and credible a result as we can. So, if you have a spare couple of minutes email your results to tonydear71@comcast.net and your voice will be heard. Simply send us your top 10 courses in order 1-10. Your name and contact info will not be published of course — we will only use the data you share. And, for ALL those that vote, we will put your name in a prize drawing for a Leupold Rangefinder, PING Putter, Dukes Gift Cards, NW Golfers Playbooks and more.
Email us your ranking of top public golf courses 1-10 at tonydear71@comcast.net today. We will draw randomly from the voters for these great prizes.
