Cascade Golfer Editorial

Hello and welcome back to the 16th season of Cascade Golfer. Since we last chatted back with December’s issue of CG, so much has gone on here with the magazine, our golf projects and the world we live in.

Our time, heart, focus and energy has been expended on managing Covid and the winter variants that if you’re like me, you’re ready to start anew with spring and 2022. It’s been more than a journey for all of us here — one filled with high highs and a few low lows. But we’re better for it, stronger and more grateful to our countless clients, partners and readers that have all been pulling the same rope as we have been. Golf is still booming while we glide through this slalom course.

Seattle Golf Show is back — thank you!

Crystal clear evidence of that was the Seattle Golf Show we just produced in early March at the Washington State Convention Center. After more than a year off because of the pandemic, the show came back to life with nearly 150 exhibits and a stellar lineup of sponsors like Puetz Golf, Seattle BMW, Corona Premier and many others.

The show was still a masked event to be in compli ance with local mandate rules, but thousands came out to attend the show and stand with the sport and the show’s comeback. It was exciting and our honor to put on such a great event after this long pause. The show was very robust, and albeit different to do it in what we hope is the tail end of the pandemic, it was special to be in person again. We can’t wait for the 2023 Seattle Golf Show.

In addition to the Seattle show, we produced the Port land, Connecticut, Kansas City and St. Louis Golf Shows all February and March as well. It’s been an amazing ride, and an education to see how each market has respond ed to the sport uniquely. For us, the coastal shows had a little different overall vibe versus our productions in the Midwest. The culture of the marketplace in how they have managed Covid is different, and we respected each spot and fanbase on the map accordingly.

Golf is still booming

One thing that was spot on in each show was enthu siasm for the game, spending on goods and services and a general bullish outlook for 2022. See our Post Game story on page 58 to back that up. Rounds played in 2021 eclipsed the highest point in American golf history back in 2000. The ‘Tiger Era’ was the driving force behind the golf boom 20-plus years ago — this time it took a global pandemic to fuel golf’s surge.

CG’s fan loyalty card and playbook on sale now Back to you, our fans, and readers, we have teed up a 2022 to celebrate your hunger and readiness for another record year. Our Cascade Golfer Players Card is off to a huge start — with 11 rounds of golf for only $279 it’s a no brainer. We also just rolled out our North west Golfers Playbook, which is filled to the brim with

120-plus offers from golf courses and facilities all over Washington and Oregon. However, Puget Sound has the most offers and after buying the book and using it twice, you are already getting your ROI. See our offer in this issue.

CG Cup, Match Play and Corona Premier Shootout at Gamble Sands are set Over a decade ago, we realized our followers wanted more from us in the face-to-face world, and our 2022 Cas cade Golfer Cup series is scheduled and set with a slate of two-person team events that are just as fun as they are competitive. We’re happy to announce we will again have our Cascade Golfer Match Play Championship start ing soon and our 2nd Annual Corona Premier Shootout at Gamble Sands will again highlight our warm weather madness. The Shootout is our only two-day event, and we truly feel it’s the summer golf event of the year.

Duke’s Seafood and Moscrip family generosity makes a difference — scholarship nominations being accepted now

Last, but certainly not least, we have again renewed our partnership with Duke’s Seafood in bringing Puget Sound youth golfers another year of generous scholar ships to worthy aspiring players. John and Duke Moscrip crafted this program with us many years ago and dozens of young golfers through the area have seen over $20,000 in cumulative gifts go right to work. The recipients don’t have to be state championship caliber. The Moscrips have done a masterful job at recognizing young people living right, academically focused and playing golf for the love of the game. So, if you are a youth player, a coach, parent or a supporter of golf and have a worthy applicant that could use these funds to deepen their association with the sport, send a letter of inquiry to stephens@varsitycommunica tions.com

Last summer’s Corona Premier Shootout at Gamble Sands was one of the most memorable events we’ve ever staged, and the consensus for the 112 par ticipants was it would need to be repeated. So that’s exactly what we’re doing. The event will return July 23-24 to one of the state’s most beloved courses for two days of unbelievable fun, competition, and more laughs than you can shake a 48-inch driver at. David McLay Kidd’s awesome Sands Course has been one of our favorites since the day it opened nearly eight years ago, mixing firm, linksy golf on amazing fescue turf with amazing views over the Columbia River. We can’t get enough of it and everyone that entered in 2021 said much the same. On both the Saturday and Sunday you experience 18 magical holes of a two-person Best Ball competition with Gross and Net divisions and extra prizes for KPs (4), long drive and straight drive. It was just one critical element — the greens. They turned out to be temporary greens that lasted a dozen years. Chambers, the linksy, treeless layout poised on a hillside overlooking Puget Sound, was exquisitely de signed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. It was long and challenging enough to draw the USGA’s attention. What we all missed was the design flaw — fescue grass greens. They couldn’t hold up under wear from regular folks and by the time the U.S. Open competition arrived, the greens were water-starved putting patches (ask Dustin Johnson). That changed in April 2019 when the conversion to poa annua greens was completed. That’s when Chambers Bay became what all its supporters had hoped it could be, pretty much flawless beauty. The greens were receptive, they were consistent and true. Chambers has rallied back to No. 1 because this region’s golfers recognize that the poa retrofit was the final piece. It’s a world-class layout that can be reliably played. Expectations among the golfing legions have been realized. It’s appropriate Chambers Bay takes the cake and title this year. The U.S. Women’s Amateur will be showcase event this summer there. 1 Chambers Bay University Place1 No one we know has ever taken half-day drive to Brewster, Wash., to gaze at orchards of apple trees. But Cass Gebbers, the apple magnet who employs much of Okanogan County, had a transformative vision for those otherwise fruitful fields. In 2014, he oversaw the establishment of a champi onship caliber golf course right there among the Honey crisps. The golfing public paid off Gebbers’ gamble with overwhelming support of glorious Gamble Sands, on a scenic bluff above the mighty Columbia. It was masterfully designed by David McLay Kidd, the same guy who developed Bandon Dunes. Its opening was heralded as the best new course in America by Golf Digest and has drawn dozens of accolades along with thousands of golfers over the years. And that was just the start. These folks don’t sit on their McIntoshes. In 2017, the 37-room Inn at Gamble Sands was completed. It’s vital stayand-play lodging is just a minute walk from the clubhouse. Securing a room in the summer now is as easy as an albatross. Adjacent to the Inn is the 100,000-square-foot Cascade Putting Course. Kidd was brought in to design 14-hole par-3 Quicksands course. It opened a year ago and has been enormously popular. Ever-evolving Gamble Sands and poa-pow ered Chambers are virtually neck-and-neck, really No. 1 and No. 1A. It seems the race for No. 1 in this state is never static. 2 3 Gold Mountain Olympic Bremerton Gold Mountain, part of a vast 36-hole footprint (with the Cascade course) that spreads through the Kitsap Pen insula forests in Bremerton, is the unchallenged No. 1 golf course in the state — with trees. It’s third in our poll, first in firs. The top three links courses, Chambers, Gamble and Wine Valley, have a combined, maybe seven trees. Gold Mountain’s number is just shy of a zillion, wrapping around in green ribbons and woodsy corridors with stretches of short grass interspersed. The lanky swaying pines, the trustworthy greens, popup hills and placid ponds keep your interest (and at times your golf ball) throughout Gold’s 18 diversified holes. The course, designed by late legend John Harbottle, is worth its lofty rank because of its playability and pure enjoyment. The course has gotten inside of poll voters’ heads and hearts. You breathe better and feel better when you play it, no matter your score. No doubt, golfers have bestowed value on its forest ambiance. It’s a good walk through a virtual park and has been that way since it opened in 1996. Harbottle, a Northwest native, understood as much about drawing up crafty risk-and-reward shots and he did about his showcasing of Mother Nature. 3Photo by Rob Perry robperry.com Gamble Sands Brewster2 e sent out our first call for votes in April, asking friends, industry colleagues and, most importantly, Cascade Golfer readers to send us what they think are Washington’s 10 best courses. Repeated requests were made on social media throughout the spring and early summer and a very healthy bank of responses was collected, analyzed, sifted and counted toward the end of June. As in past years, we gave 10 points to each voter’s number one course, nine for their second pick and so on down to one point for their 10th. We added up all the points to determine the state’s best courses, women golfers’ favored courses, the best by region and the courses voted for by those that work in the golf industry. Course (First-Place Votes) Total 1. Chambers Bay (73) 1,587 2. Gamble Sands (62) 1,473 3. Gold Mountain - Olympic (15) 1,185 4. Wine Valley (19) 1,047 5. Salish Cliffs (10) 916 6. Editor’s Note: *Nearly 33 percent of those that voted for Port Ludlow gave it 10 points, meaning it ranked third for first-place votes. While we love this beau tiful course and welcome any opportunity we get to cross the Sound and play there, we suspect those that ranked it so high were ‘encouraged’ to do so. See our 11-20 section for Port Ludlow’s ranking report. Corona Premier Shootout is two days of world-class two-person best ball and an action-packed weekend

Ocourse, we’re going back — crazy not to after the success of last year, right?

The inaugural two-day Corona Premier Shootout at Gamble Sands produced so many memorable moments we’re still talking about them in the office, and we suspect the 112 golfers that enjoyed the glorious summer week end last year are still enjoying the memories too.

Thirty-six holes on the incredible David Mc Lay-Kidd-designed Sands Course, a trip around the 14hole Quicksands Course (and it was a ‘trip’), evening shenanigans on the Cascades Putting Course and lunch both days added up to the sort of event you remember for years and one that you should sign up for early this year to guarantee your place.

Following play on Saturday evening, we’ll head to the rollicking Cascades Putting Course for Happy Hour and, with a cold Corona in one hand and your putter in the other, watch the sun going down beyond the mighty Columbia River and Cascade Mountains.

There will be prizes for the top five teams daily in both divisions plus the top five overall in both divisions for the weekend. For those of you counting at home, that’s a total of 30 team prizes in addition to those for

long and straight drives each day and several closest- tothe-pin prizes.

The fee will be $850-$950 per team and includes the tournament entry and green fees, Saturday round at Quicksands, use of a cart, range balls, plus lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Lodging is available at the Inn but be sure to book it asap as it will go fast.

Golf in the Pacific Northwest can be a double-edged sword. On one side are the record high temperatures, significant flooding and above average snowfall/bizarrely low temperatures the region encountered during the last four or five months of 2021. And, on the other you find a handful of truly world-class courses open to the public.

Two of our favorites are Gamble Sands and Salish Cliffs which, though situated in very different landscapes, are both quintessentially Pacific Northwestern.

Gamble Sands, found in Central Washington’s high desert on a rugged plateau, 500 feet above the mighty Columbia River with distant views of the Cascade Mountains, opened with David McLayKidd’s exceptional Sands Course. A 200-mile drive east of Seattle, its remoteness meant word of how good a course it was emerged about as slowly as something can emerge in today’s hyper-connected world, but it wasn’t too long before it had earned a spot in national rankings and golfers from further afield than Seattle and Spokane were showing up.

With its reputation growing, the Gebbers Family, which owns the property (along with a success ful, generations-old fruit and ranching business), decided in 2016 the time was right to add a lodging component. Each of the 37 rooms of the Inn at Gamble Sands affords great views over the Columbia and easy access to McLay-Kidd’s Cascades Putting Course, where end-of-day putting contests keep guests going late into the night.

Consistent exposure, a growing resort and the continued climb up the rankings gave family patri arch, Cass Gebbers, the confidence to add the sort of play-in-an-hour short course that has become an essential part of modern resort golf. Like the Gil Hanse-designed Cradle at Pinehurst, Tiger Woods’ re-imagined Hay at Pebble Beach, Keith Rhebb and Riley Johns’ Bootlegger at Forest Dunes or Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw’s brilliant 13-hole Preserve at Bandon Dunes, McLay-Kidd’s 14-hole Quick sands Course is a blast, a non-stop fun-fest where golfers can play holes named Plinko, Crater, Donut and Boomerang in flip-flops with seven of their pals.

SHORT GAME Corona Premier Shootout is two days of world-class two-person best ball and an action-packed weekend course, we’re going back — crazy not to after the success of last year, right? The inaugural two-day Corona Premier Shootout at Gamble Sands produced so many memorable moments we’re still talking about them in the office, and we suspect the 112 golfers that enjoyed the glorious summer week end last year are still enjoying the memories too. Thirty-six holes on the incredible David Mc Lay-Kidd-designed Sands Course, trip around the 14hole Quicksands Course (and was ‘trip’), evening shenanigans on the Cascades Putting Course and lunch both days added up to the sort of event you remember for years and one that you should sign up for early this year to guarantee your place. This year’s event takes place on the weekend of July 23-24. The format will be the same as 2021 — two-per son best ball with gross and net divisions and extra priz es for KPs (4), long drive and straight drive. For those of you counting at home, that’s a total of 30 team prizes in addition to those for long and straight drives each day and several closest- tothe-pin prizes. The fee will be $850-$950 per team and includes the tournament entry and green fees, Saturday round at Quicksands, use of cart, range balls, plus lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Lodging is available at the Inn but be sure to book it asap as will go fast. Now go find playing partner before you miss out on what promises to be the best golf weekend of the year.
