Gravity II For piano, marimba & fixed electronics 2016

Program note: Gravity II, is the second piece that I explore the idea of the sonic realization of such natural phenomenon. Gravity has at the same time stability but also power that holds everything it surrounds it. The electronic sounds follow this quality and in a way the piano and the marimba move around that. The composition is based on the overtone and undertone harmonic series of G and on a specific intervallic relationship that is realized with rhythmical patterns in the middle section. The piece is written in response to the 350 years from the discovery of gravity by Isaac Newton (1666).

Performance note: The A3 score it’s the same for both instrumentalists (no individual parts). The marimba player should follow a stopwatch and cue the pianist at the given moments – specified on every section of the piece. Tape and stopwatch should start exactly together – in the beginning there are about 45 seconds of silence in the electronics part. At the very end, the performers are gradually playing softer, finishing more or less together with the tape.

For the fixed electronic part, a stereo set of speakers it’s enough. Ideally the two instruments should be only slightly amplified, not necessarily for volume reasons but to have their sound also coming out from the tape source. Keep lighting low and to test the volume of the electronics part, the loudest point is during the last 40 seconds.
