About Haiku & About this Book Haiku originated in Japan in the 15th century in a very different form than today. It was modified through centuries. Renga- Haikai- Hokku- were humorous poems, either dealing with nature; dealing with day-to-day life incidents; seasons or juxtaposition of two contradictory things with a pivotal middle line. The Edo Period (16001868) had masters such as Basho, Buson, Issa. Their Haikus though read independently now, are largely hokkus and are part of a larger poem. Modern Haiku started in 1890s as an independent 3-line poetry, by Masaoka Shiki. Haiku consist of 3 lines. First line usually contains 5 syllables, second line is longer with 7 syllables while third line again contains 5 syllables. Syllables in Japanese language are much different than English and translated Japanese Haiku many times loses the syllable count. It is up to the writer to follow the 5-7-5 syllable format or break free from it. A lot of American Haiku writing societies have broken free from the 5-7-5 format. One can use a syllable counter on the internet till they master syllable counting. Do not let syllable counting stop you from writing Haikus. My journey with Haiku goes back a few years. I found it a very convenient form of bringing forth my creativity. One can be full of ideas, but the hustle bustle of contemporary life doesn't provide the time and luxury to indulge in long writing. Haikus on the contrary can be written very quickly as they are just 3 lines. This book was envisioned long back. I wanted to encourage people to explore this form of writing as it is very suitable to current times. Having taken workshops of Haiku writing at Literature festivals, the next step I thought was to compile an Haiku anthology of upcoming authors. I am thankful to Abhisar Garg and Risha to have helped me achieve this goal.
Happy Haiku writing… Vatsal Shah

Summer-night, Watered Walking-track, Whiff of Moist Earth &, Fragrance of Frangipanis...
Tears on eye's balcony, Climbed for suicide, waited... Then finally jumped!
Kid wonders 'Why this gag?' Home came Dad with medals and... Wrapped in a flag!
Evening still young, My lips, your story, dripping sensuously, Honey-soaked words.
Haiku: hear silently, Mighty sea roar resonating, Inside tiny conch shell.
Our relationship, Shop-soiled surely, but not, Yet reached 'use-by' date!
Don't just think, write it, While people judge good bad, Write even some more...
Without a Motive, Hence it's Love, With a Reason, It would be Conspiracy.
Wish childhood was that 'Award', Life would return back, In its grievance against me!
"Anything else with tea?" At College canteen after years, "Can I get old friends?"
