FROM THE BOARDROOM: STEVE DICKSON – CHAIRMAN OF BILLINGE FC As the season draws to a conclusion Gaz Fletcher has secured enough points to guarantee the club’s attendance in the top Division next season, Fletch will be working hard through the summer to bring in reinforcements to improve on this season league position and points tally. Today we welcome Eagle Sports who still have designs on claiming the league title as they have a number of games in hand on their competition. Normally the games between Billinge and Eagle Sports are very tight however Rob Hope’s teams are always very difficult teams to get anything from. Apart from welcoming Eagle Sports we would also like to welcome our local Councillor Sue Murphy, Sue is very keen to support the development of facilities for young people in the area and as the club harbour similar ambitions it would seem that our goals and objectives are in close alignment. Billinge FC can boast many lads playing for the senior teams who have come through the Junior section. It really is good to see that we have support on the council and this will surely assist in the clubs future development. Unfortunately since the last program was issued we have discovered that we are not licenced for the sale of alcohol or preparation of hot food. Thanks to Jayne Wood we are now able to prepare food and we hope that we will shortly have good news regarding the sale of alcohol; in the meantime we still have a variety of refreshments for our supporters and visitors to enjoy. So without further ado welcome everyone to Billinge FC let’s hope for a good game and three points for the Storks.
BEST WISHES STEVE
WORD FROM THE GAFFER Welcome to Barrows Farm to all our friends from Eagle Sports for tonight’s game. Two weeks ago I was able to field one of my strongest teams of the season and with it came an excellent 4-0 win at Styal; coming in turn off a fantastic 3-3 draw at title contenders Barnton. However on Saturday I had eight players missing from the Styal game and it showed as we lost 3-0 to Rudheath Social. Everybody that came in gave it a good go but all of us at the club are aware that if we can get the same lads out each and every week we will be up at the right end of the table next season. And that is the aim. We have some great youngsters coming through and at Styal half of my squad was aged 20 and below. This is the mix we are looking for and with other youngsters – from the reserves knocking on the door next season is one that I’m really looking forward to. But before then we have two games to go – one tonight and one on Saturday and we aim to pick up maximum points from these games. In between these games this Thursday our reserves travel to Ellesmere Port FC in the semi-final of the Northern Cup and I’d like to wish Geoff and his lads all the best. We have won the competition for the last two years and are determined to make it three on the trot. Whatever happens I believe we have done a great job in securing Cheshire League Division One football for another season; especially considering we have had some trying times off the pitch. After a lot of hard work by the committee we can see a real light at the end of the tunnel in respect to that and everything points to very good times ahead. Geoff and myself have both come in during the season and we will now have a good pre-season to work with the lads, bring some players in and put our own personality on the squads. It will also be Dave Wood’s second season of openage football and it is really refreshing to note that a couple of Dave’s Sunday lads are now regularly playing (and playing well) for the Saturday sides. We have always said we are a football club and not football teams and the spirit among all the teams is superb at the moment and will only get better. I’ll say all my thank yous in Saturday’s programme but for now let’s concentrate on getting the three points tonight and COYS
Yours Gareth Fletcher
Roberto Martinez: More of a Wiganer than you'll ever be Kay Burley: The other week I watched the Hillsborough memorial service on BBC News. It was as moving as it always is. More so. As a football fan I understand about Hillsborough. As a Wiganer I understand and admire Roberto Martinez and when he addressed the crowd I was close to tears. Later I checked twitter to find that the Sky News news presenter Kay Burley had spoken over Martinez's address saying, "Sky News must distance themselves from some of things he's saying." 'The things he's saying?' - The truth you mean. That was utterly despicable of Sky News but we expect things like that from the company/man that owns The Sun newspaper. What made it even worse for me is that Burley is from Wigan. Wigan - the town that let Martinez into their hearts. The town that he loves. The town that gave him a chance as a player and as a manager. In return he gave us an FA Cup win. If Burley was a true Wiganer she would know that and would not have said what she did whatever somebody may or may not have told her 'in her ear'. It was her shout. Not Rupert's. Hers and she said what she said. She should be ashamed of herself and Wigan should be ashamed of her. It is quite clear Roberto Martinez is a better Wiganer than Kay Burley will ever be. But more importantly Roberto Martinez is a better human being than Kay Burley will ever be. Roberto's Hillsborough address in full: "I was only 15 in April 1989 - a football-mad kid and a football-mad family like many of you today - and we heard the news about Hillsborough. "As a family, we couldn't believe the pain and horror that the families would get by receiving the news that their loved ones wouldn't be coming home from a football match .How can anyone die watching the game you love? That isn't right. That isn't fair. "What happened after wasn't right or fair either. To have to fight for the good name of the ones you lost was appalling but as my chairman (Bill Kenwright) said a year ago, the authorities took on the wrong city if they thought they were going to get away with that. "It's only recently that I had the privilege to spend some time in your city; great warmth, great spirit, great friendships and I've always seen great determination, passion and commitment for ensuring what's right and fair. "Those are the qualities that represents the Hillsborough families - a remarkable group of people. The way you fight for justice has been truly remarkable. Over 25 years, you have overcome so many wrongs. "For 25 years, you've gained the respect of those within and beyond football, and in the city. I know I don't have to tell you Everton are with you - you know that. "We are with you today at Goodison Park, where the fans are gathering with the board, the staff and the players because they want to send their prayers, across Stanley Park, to you, and we we will erect a permanent memorial at Goodison later this year. "Everton remembers. We always will...............

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WOODERS! Liverpool Challenge Cup Final Garswood opened the scoring within 30 seconds when Graham Darlington fed Chris Francis, who after a couple of one twos with Mike Furlong found himself 35 yards out. Francis ran at the back four for 10 yards before unleashing an unstoppable shot with his weaker left foot into the top corner. This rocked South Liverpool who were struggling to find a foothold in the game , Lloyd Dean was causing havoc at every opportunity & it was no surprise when he doubled Garswood’s lead after 20 minutes, latching on to a pass into the channel, he ran at the defence before turning the centre-half and firing low past the keeper. Garswood were looking like they could score every time they attacked which caused South Liverpool to change their formation going three at the back and putting an extra man in midfield. They gradually got into the game and looked dangerous through the pace of Gargin and the aerial presence of Cameron Dalton. Gargin outpaced Luke Faulkner but found Charlie Dorsey equal to his shot in the Garswood goal. Garswood had been first to everything but the big pitch was taking its toll & with 5 minutes to go they started to tire as South Liverpool became more dominant. This continued in the 2nd half, South were on top & their pressure told when ten minutes into the half, a soaring unstoppable 18-yard header from Dalton flew into the net. Garswood looked firm on their feet as South asked plenty of questions, but Garswood's outstanding defence stood firm, led by Ross Shepherd and the outstanding Tyler Jeffries. Fresh legs in the shape of Mike Winer and Rob Smith were introduced. South Liverpool's threat diminished and Garswood took control of the game again. Dean hit the bar, Faulkner fired over and the keeper made good saves from Danny Clarke and Rob Smith. South ' s impressive centre half was sent off in the last minute for a second bookable offence and Garswood won the Cup for the second time in their history, a cup that has been won by Liverpool, Everton and Tranmere. They are the only Cheshire League team to win the trophy, the cup having been dominated by a few clubs in the last 30 years, beating a superb South Liverpool team. The final was a credit to both the Cheshire & West Cheshire leagues.

League news Maine Rd Reserves rule Manchester Maine Road Reserves won the Manchester FA Amateur Cup 3-1 against Deans Youth, at the home of Curzon Ashton, last Thursday evening. Having gone 1-0 down after a blunder by keeper Ryan Livesey from a corner, Maine Road did not panic and kept on passing the ball about, and were rewarded. From a Connor Hughes free kick, JOSH HARPER headed the ball into the corner of the net, for a well-deserved equaliser. In the 2nd half Maine Road's youngsters exerted complete dominance, but were missing far too many chances. Eventually a Connor Hughes pass inside the fullback, found DANIEL MORGAN who slotted the ball into the far corner. Sub MATTHEW MORGAN drove the ball home from the edge of the box to give the score line a more realistic look. CONNOR HUGHES was rightly voted Man of the Match, but also a special mention must go to young TOM KEYWORTH who was outstanding Golborne Sports 1st Team Manager wanted Position Available: Golborne 1st Team Manager Golborne Sports are looking to appoint a new 1st team manager for the 2014/15 season. NON-LEAGUE YOUTH AND ACADEMY FIRST
The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League is set to become the first in English football to launch a youth league and academy combining football with further education. The NPL Football Academy opens its doors to its first intake of 200 students in September after being officially sanctioned by the Football Association and backed by Euromatech, the global training provider run by Marwan Koukash, the owner of the Salford Red Devils. An initial pilot programme will see students aged 16-18 at ten clubs studying for a BTEC Level 3 in Sport on two year courses as well as working with FA licensed coaches on a daily basis and competing in the Evo-Stik NPL Youth League and national competitions led by the FA Youth Cup. The programme will run alongside existing youth set-ups at participating clubs, offering the best of each year’s intake the chance to play senior Non-League football at the likes of FC United of Manchester, Mickleover Sports, Radcliffe Borough, Leek Town and Lancaster City. Evo-Stik NPL Chairman Mark Harris said: "We are proud to be leading the way again with the backing of the FA and the expertise of Euromatech. There are many academies and numerous youth leagues but the NPL Football Academy is the first to combine both. "The NPL Football Academy will create a pool of player talent for clubs to draw upon and benefit from directly as well offering young people a fantastic path into the sporting industry through the qualifications and the real experience our clubs will be delivering. "Not every student will go on to a career as a player and together with greater community engagement for the clubs, they'll also be playing a vital role in introducing the next generation of administrators and volunteers into sport and we hope, Non-League football." Backing the initiative is Danny Donachie, Head of Everton’s medical team, who said: "Playing semi-professional football in the NPL gave me the opportunity to develop on and off the field, allowing me to play League football while pursuing academic interests that have led me to a rewarding job in the Premier League. It is a wonderful opportunity, enabling young players to follow their dreams." Donachie’s Everton colleague Andy Johnson, who coaches at the club’s Academy and is the England women’s goalkeeper coach, said: "I played for 20 years in the NPL, which led to me pursuing a coaching role. I have had a good career as a coach thanks to the opportunities I got in the NPL and this can only increase them for youngsters in the future."

Dave Knowles is appointed as the Reserve Team Manager. Knowles is the first Billinge manager to take a team to a Mid-Cheshire Cup Final, losing narrowly to Poynton on a penalty shootout. Following the highs of the Cup Final, various on-going issues meant that Knowles was to leave the club at the end of the season. 2008-2009 Griffiths and Clough get Billinge promoted to the top division in the Cheshire League. The club move grounds from Eddleston Fields to purpose-built facilities at Barrow Farm. Steve Dickson is appointed as Reserve Team Manager. 2009-2010 Griffiths and Clough consolidate the First Team in the Cheshire League top division and Dickson looks to re-build the Reserves with strong links into the Billinge Youth system. 2010-2011 Ex St Helens Town Manager Jimmy McBride comes out of retirement to take over the job of First Team Manager, Bryan Griffiths steps down to become assistant to McBride and Andrew Clough takes on the position of club Chairman.

A new Reserve Team Management Team is appointed with Brian Mather, Chez Tideswell and Campbell Wilson coming in with a host of new players. The First Team had a really good run of results which lead to a mid-table finish considering the disastrous start this was a great achievement, they were the first Billinge Senior Team to get to the Cheshire League's prestigious League Cup Final and the average age has been reduced to 22 years. The Reserves have equalled Dave Knowles feat of getting the Reserves to the Reserve Cup Final, they also went on to a league and cup double, beating Farnworth 3-0 in the Northern Cup Final then to be crowned as Cheshire League Reserve Division Champions. Following the Reserve Team's success at Billinge the management accepted an approach from Daten F.C and left to form Daten's first team. Billinge moved quickly to appoint Paul Oakes as the Reserve team manager, Oakes had enjoyed success with St Helens Combination Premier outfit Greenfields FC. Dave Knowles returned to the club as Assistant Manager to Oakes, with Rob Dainty taking on an advisory/youth development role, this position is temporary as Dainty will return to First Team duties. 2012-2013 Steve Dickson steered the First Team to safety in the top division while the Reserve Team, under Paul Oakes, finished a very respectable 7th. The Reserve Team became the first club to retain the Northern Cup when they beat Quarry Bank 3-1 in the final. 2013-2014 Paul Oakes and Steve Dickson take up the reins of the First Team management whilst Paul Farrell and Keith Amato are appointed Reserve Team managers. New members are added to the committee with Steve Dickson installed as chairman while the club runs a Sunday Team managed by committee member Dave Wood and playing in the South Lancs League at Barrows Farm as the club celebrates it’s silver anniversary.

THE PRO GAME Bolton Announce Macron As Stadium Sponsor Bolton Wanderers have announced sportswear manufacturers Macron as the club’s new official stadium naming rights partner and kit providers. Macron will take over from Reebok who have been the club’s stadium sponsor since they moved to their new ground in 1997. The initial four year agreement will see the club's stadium rebranded as Macron Stadium from July 2014 and will also produce the club's official match kit, as well as training and leisurewear. Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside said, "This is an extremely exciting and beneficial deal for our club. “We will be proud to carry the Macron brand on our stadium and official merchandise for the coming seasons. We have been very impressed with their passion for football and their ideas to grow our partnership. "Macron will bring a new range of kit and training wear for our players and supporters that will launch later in the summer. They are an ambitious and innovative company and we are looking forward to becoming one of their flagship clubs. "I would also like to take this opportunity to place on record our thanks to Reebok and the rest of the Adidas Group for their continued support over the years." The deal will run for an initial four years, with the club having the option to extend thereafter. Macron CEO Gianluca Pavanello added, "We are very proud to start this relationship with such a prestigious club as Bolton Wanderers. Macron wishes to be associated with top clubs where the company's principles of high quality customised products can be further demonstrated. "We feel with this bold move of becoming a stadium naming rights partner we have been able to consolidate Macron’s brand as a major player in the European sponsorship market. "We are proud to welcome Bolton Wanderers to the Macron family and are now working closely together in order to create a unique collection for next season that we believe will be appreciated by the Bolton fans." SkyBet League 1: Oldham Athletic look set to sign Stadium and team wear deal with Sports Direct According to the Manchester Evening News, unconfirmed reports suggest that League 1 Oldham Athletic are on the verge of signing a significant sponsorship deal that could see Boundary Park renamed. The paper revealed that Latics officials are in advanced talks with sportswear giants Sports Direct over a five-year agreement. According to the MEN, If signed off the deal would see the company, owned by Newcastle United supremo Mike Ashley, take over the running of the club
shop - which will be moved to the new stand currently under construction at the ground. It would also see Sondico, a subsidiary of Sports Direct, manufacture Oldham’s shirts - and those shirts would be sponsored by Sports Direct. Latics officials declined to comment but it is understood lengthy talks are close to a conclusion however, any announcement could not be made until the existing deal with JD Sports comes to an end on May 31. The move may also see Alan Pardew’s Magpies head to League One Latics for a pre-season friendly and could no doubt open the door for a relationship between the clubs that may see some of the Toon’s younger players lent out to gain valuable experience. No sums have been disclosed although the proposed deal is thought to be the biggest commercial agreement in Oldham’s history and may approach seven figures over the duration of the contract. The deal is good news for the club, especially having secured their League 1 status for another season. The new 2,500 seater stand is under construction at the moment. FA and FAW Submit EURO 2020 Bids The FA has submitted a bid to host one of the 13 UEFA Euro 2020 packages. English football’s governing body has expressed an interest in two packages – one group stage as well as the semi-finals and final package. The FA joins Wales and Scotland who submitted their bid yesterday as nations to have expressed interest in hosting matches during the Europe wide tournament. UEFA opened the bidding process for associations to express their interest in hosting either one of the 12 group stage packages, or to be the host city of both semi-finals and the final. Associations can apply for more than one package, but can only be awarded one. The bidding nations will be announced on Saturday 26 April - and a final decision as to which bids have been successful will be announced by UEFA in Geneva on 19 September. FA general secretary Alex Horne said: “I would like to thank everyone involved in The FA’s bid to host part of the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament, including the Mayor of London, the Greater London Authority and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport - along with our various partners across the capital and the country as a whole. “We are bidding for either of the two packages available and with our recent experience of hosting two UEFA Champions League Finals in the last four years we believe that Wembley Stadium and London represent a strong bid for UEFA to consider. “We recognise UEFA is considering many strong bids from a number of candidate cities and we welcome the opportunity to put forward our bid.”
The decision to hold a "Euro for Europe" completion in 2020 was taken to mark the European Championship's 60th anniversary. Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium is at the heart of the Football Association of Wales’ bid to secure a package of matches consisting of three group games plus either a last 16 or a quarter final match. Jonathan Ford, Chief Executive of the FAW said, “The FAW is thrilled to submit its UEFA EURO 2020 bid and we believe that we have a strong and compelling proposition. The Millennium Stadium, with a capacity of almost 75,000 as well as 100 hospitality boxes, would generate a significant financial contribution for UEFA. “In terms of transport, our bid is supported by both Cardiff and Bristol airports who have signed service level agreements outlining their delivery of UEFA’s EURO 2020 tournament requirements. Both airports are able to operate 24 hours a day and are easily accessible from Cardiff city centre. “By 2020, rail links to London will be down to just 90 minutes and when you also consider Birmingham, the FAW is able to offer four international airports within two hours of Cardiff, thus providing UEFA and all UEFA EURO 2020 spectators with multiple airport options to choose from. “All UEFA EURO 2020 ticket holders will also benefit from free travel on buses and trains including the transport connections linking Cardiff city centre with both Cardiff and Bristol airports. We have a strong accommodation plan with the majority of UEFA’s own accommodation requirements located within walking distance of the Millennium Stadium. "Through working with our numerous accommodation partners, the FAW is also able to offer UEFA EURO 2020 spectators with a choice of 41,000 beds, all located within an hour of Cardiff and in locations covered by the FAW’s free travel offer.” Ford added that legacy is an important focus of the bid plans, saying, “In order to help ensure a lasting positive impact from hosting this prestigious tournament, the FAW will create a UEFA EURO 2020 Legacy Fund, into which the FAW will reinvest the surplus it generates from staging UEFA EURO 2020. “This legacy fund will be used to support grass roots Welsh football and will have a positive impact on communities throughout Wales.” The Millennium Stadium was used by the English FA to host FA Cup games during the construction of Wembley Stadium and is considered one of the best stadiums in Europe. Welsh International and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale, who is backing the Welsh bid, added, “This could be the beginning of a great period for Welsh international football. It would then be an unbelievable experience to play in the 2020 European Championship finals in my home city of Cardiff. “I have been fortunate to play in some of the world’s greatest stadia but nothing matches the atmosphere and passion generated by the Millennium Stadium. These are exciting times for Welsh football and I’m really proud to offer my full support to the FAW’s UEFA EURO 2020 bid.”
A brief history of tonight’s visitors Eagle Sports FC Eagle Sports FC were formerly a works football team under the name of Electro Hydraulics. They later amalgamated with Rubery Owen and Conveyancer a company which relocated to the Warrington area from the midlands by the then owner Sir Alfred Owen. They were a manufacturing company who made equipment for the war effort. They originally played at Hood Lane next to Crosfields and played in the Warrington & District League around 1941 but there are some suggestions that they were originally founded in 1928. It is unclear how the name of Eagle Sports FC was generated and even more mystifying how they started playing at their current ground of Thornton Road. Eagle Sports FC were always one of the top sides in the Warrington and District League and their league honours included the Guardian Cup, the Dodds Shield, Drinkwater cup, Jubilee Cup and probably their greatest achievement was to play in the finals of the Liverpool Junior Cup in both 1991/1992 and 1992/1993 the first year as runners up to Aigburth Peoples Hall and the second year as victors over Aigburth Peoples Hall FC, a Liverpool club with a very big reputation in Amateur football. Under the management of Colin Hope they were the first team from Warrington in 27 years to win this coveted trophy. Eagle Sports again reached the final of the Liverpool Junior Cup in 2009 managed by Colin's son Robert Hope but were unfortunate to lose 3-2 against Knowsley South. Eagle Sports FC has always encouraged players to play at the highest level possible and have provided players for many non-League football clubs in the North West area. Eagle Sports FC eventually severed all ties with the Warrington and District league and applied to join the Mid Cheshire league in 2004 as many of their players demanded a fresh challenge in a league which was growing rapidly in its reputation and in order to keep its better players from seeking pastures new. Eagle joined the Mid Cheshire League as Penketh and Sankey Eagle FC and won the 2nd division title in their first year. They, however, could not sustain their early successes in the 1st division and were relegated the following season.
Season 2008/2009 brought promotion back to Division 1 of the Cheshire Association Football League (formerly Mid Cheshire league) in the final game of the season with Ian Berry scoring the winning goal in injury time against Whitchurch Alport. Ged McAllister received the league's Division 2 leading scorer, and Eagle were now hoping to make a name for themselves in the top tier for 2009/2010 season. Eagle Sports FC have thoroughly enjoyed life in the now Cheshire Football league but have suffered like many other clubs in continually losing players which has contributed to a general decline in amateur football. We do however have a small very committed group of dedicated committee members who have given up so much time to Eagle Sports FC. Colin Hope, the current chairman and treasurer, has now done over 20 years after arriving from Warrington Town FC to play and manage Eagle Sports FC. Dave Myers, former secretary, is also over 20 years’ service and Neil Williams originally played for Eagle before going to Warrington Town. Eagle still to this day have former players from the 1940's who turn up every Saturday to support us, ex-players such as Reg Williams (sadly Reg passed away on December 31st 2009), Jack Taylor, Mal Baker and Brian Radley (sadly Brian passed away on October 3rd 2013). Additionally we have ex-players such as Steve Ward, Alan Taylor, Martin Timmins, Ian Martin, Dave Reid, Steve Heywood and Peter Glover who all have 20 years plus of dedicated service to Eagle Sports which epitomises their loyalty to our club. The club won the JB Parker Cup for the first time in 2011/2012 season after defeating Billinge FC 2-0 in the final played at Trafford FC. This was then joined by the Guardian Cup as Rylands were defeated 3-1 in the final at Warrington Town FC. Ged McAllister again finished joint top goal scorer of the CFL Division One with 27 goals. In the 2012/2013 season, the club were again victorious in the JB Parker Cup, defeating Rylands FC 1-0 in the final. Rob Hope's side also claimed runners up in the CFL Division One for the first time.
