O

riginally called “Mount Pleasant”, the town of Augusta was founded as a riverboat landing along the Missouri River in 1836 by Leonard Harold. Glowing reports of this area written by German researcher-explorer, Gottfried Duden, resulted in a large influx of German immigrants in the 1840’s. After a large flood in 1844, area residents began building businesses along the waterfront to meet their own needs as well as the needs of the river traveler.

Augusta was known as a popular 'resort town' on the Missouri River. A room with a view of the river cost $1.00 for the night. The General Store of that time was known to have “everything under one roof”…from food staples to hardware…and everything in between that was needed to live in the 1800’s.

Photo courtesy of Washington Historical Society, Washington, MO The Bright Star, former Washington steamboat, served Augusta in the 1860's.

Purchases were made by cash, by barter or trade, or by credit. Ledgers were kept by store merchants to keep track of each family’s account. Around 1849 George Mindrup built his Store-Saloon-Inn at 5543 Water Street. The Mindrup Inn was well-known during the 1860’s through the early 1870’s, when Augusta was known as a popular ‘resort town’ on the Missouri River. A room with a view of the river cost $1.00 for the night for a couple and breakfast was 25 cents. The Mindrup Store-Saloon-Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Mindrup Store-Saloon-Inn The WenckerTiemann Store & Hotel was located next door to Mindrup’s. For 25 years Frederick Wencker operated the store with Carl Tiemann. Wencker’s Hotel was another popular place of lodging for steamboat travelers. Around 1864 Tiemann moved his store from the riverfront location to 5595 Walnut Street. About 10 years later, after the Missouri River had changed its course, Wencker moved his store ‘Uptown’ to 5500-04 Locust Street.

any early settlers in the Defiance area were of English descent and had moved from Kentucky and Virginia. Daniel Boone was one of the earliest known settlers in this area to have done so. After receiving an invitation by Spain to move westward, in 1799, he left Kentucky and obtained 850 acres where he made his home near what is now known as Defiance.

After the Katy Railroad came through town, in 1982, the town began to grow.

Thomas and Phoebe Parsons were Virginians that came to the area in 1840 and that were instrumental in the town’s development. Parsons had owned the land that was laid out for the town. RESIDENT’S & VISITOR’S GUIDE

Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Ruebling came to Defiance in 1893 and constructed a 2-story frame building that housed a General Store, Post Office and a residence. After the Katy Railroad came through town, in 1982, the town began to grow. Businesses included a livery stable, a blacksmith shop, and a saloon. Defiance’s growth was also stimulated by local businesses originally from nearby Matson moving to this

emerging town. Matson’s doctor, general store, grain elevator and church all relocated to Defiance. Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Ruebling came to Defiance in 1893 and constructed a 2-story frame building that housed a General Store, Post Office and a residence. It served as a General Store for half of a century and the building still remains, today, as a private residence. Lumber for this and other early Defiance area buildings was shipped by steamboat on the Missouri River and then hauled the rest of the way by wagon. In 1898 John Schiermeier moved to Defiance from Matson and built a second General Store for the area. This building at 2998 South Highway 94 still remains Continued on page 14

New Melle

Kessler’s became a popular meeting place for the town’s people.

N

ew Melle was another town in St. Charles County that attracted German immigrants because of Gottfried-Duden’s reports. In 1848 Franz Henry Porter secured a government land grant where the town was to be laid out. By 1860 more than 38,000 Germans had settled in the area of the lower Missouri River Valley. During the mid to late 1800’s businesses included 3 wagon shops, 2 carpenter shops,

2 cooper shops, a flouring mill, a sawmill and a pork house. Others included a gunsmith and tinner and a blacksmith shop. Phillip Klippel built a small hotel and bar room. Several General Stores also served the community. In 1844, Herman Koelling & Bros. set up a General Store. In 1845, Sudbrock & Co. General Store opened. In 1870, the Sudbrock/Leimbrock General Store was in operation at the corner of Almeling and Schutzen Streets. Later, it became the Frank Leimbrock Store, and then, the A.C. Hoefner Store and Post Office…which continued in business until the early 1930’s. The Meier General Store, at 3669 Mill Street, was established in 1857 by Ernst Meier Continued on page 19

and was operated by 3 generations of the Meier family into the 1940’s. The building has been renovated, brought back to its original state, and recently named Butler Brothers Grocer Co. It is no longer an operational store and is not open to the public, but the historic gable-fronted building still remains. In 1871, John Kessler expanded his tin shop to include a small store fronting Mill Street. In 1888, he hired carpenter Earnest Sudbrock to construct a new store which was completed on November 3, 1889. Kessler’s was one of the largest rural area General Stores constructed at the time. It included beautiful walnut counters, cornice molding and shelving, and glass display cases. The fifteen-foot tall ceiling had

tracks that accommodated rolling ladders to enable the shopkeeper to reach everything on the shelves. They carried a complete selection of food, household items, hardware, clothing, tinware, furniture and musical instruments. A central switchboard for Bell Telephone was installed after the store opened. Kessler’s became a popular meeting place for the town’s people. In 1921 Kessler’s was purchased by a group of shareholders and it then became the New Melle Mercantile Co. In 1973, the Schiermeier family bought the business and, in 1976, it became Schiermeier’s Cracker Barrel, which it remained until destroyed by fire in October of 1977. In 1926, Edwin Paul and Florence Joerling built and ran a General Store at 3585 Mill Street.
