Bone Health Clinic helps prevent broken bones with new program
In December 2020, Patricia Friedel, 82, felt a pain in the left side of her upper back after lifting a heavy kettle of soup. The pain continued and worsened over the next few weeks. A medical provider diagnosed a muscle strain that was treated with pain medication. The pain continued even after treatment for other spine conditions, then an MRI showed a compression fracture in her spine. She scheduled a consultation with Matt Bruns, an orthopedic nurse practitioner in the Bone Health Clinic at SSM Health DePaul Hospital. Patricia was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. She began treatment immediately and since March 2021 she has seen dramatic improvement in her bone health. Bruns and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gregory Nelson have built a bone health team of nurses, 10

physical therapists and dietitians who help people with osteoporosis to strengthen their bones and muscles for better overall health.
“One of every two women will break a bone after age 50, and then many go on to break another bone,” says Bruns. “If we treat and monitor bone health when patients first recover, we can prevent another fracture and improve their quality of life and lifespan.” The risks of osteoporosis include family history of osteoporosis, age 50+ years, low body weight, loss of height greater than 1 inch, illness treated with steroid medication, history of broken bones with
frequent falls, or history of smoking or alcohol use. Rather than wait for the signs of osteoporosis to develop, people who are at high risk for osteoporosis can make an appointment to see Bruns. Patricia says it was “a blessing to find out about the Bone Health Clinic.” She has returned to driving and is walking a mile every day for exercise.
“Osteoporosis affects more women over age 50 than the number of women with breast cancer, heart attack and stroke combined.”

Library Services for Seniors Libraries are a wonderful place to visit at any age. But, did you know that libraries offer many wonderful programs and services especially for Seniors? Library vans make regularly scheduled visits to residents of Senior Living Communities. And, even if you are confined in your own home due to illness, disability or advanced age, the Public Library System can provide free library service, by mail, delivered to your home. Participants may receive library materials that include books in regular or large print, magazines, DVDs or CDs. Specific items may be requested, or staff can select items for you, based on information that you give to them. Material is mailed at no cost to the resident and the mailing bags include a label for free return to the library. Items are checked out for 6 weeks. They may be renewed twice, by request. And there are no overdue fines.

The St. Louis County Library also hosts hundreds of virtual programs on topics like physical fitness, mental health, social issues, arts and crafts, book clubs and more.
