Bone Health Clinic helps prevent broken bones with new program
In December 2020, Patricia Friedel, 82, felt a pain in the left side of her upper back after lifting a heavy kettle of soup. The pain continued and worsened over the next few weeks. A medical provider diagnosed a muscle strain that was treated with pain medication. The pain continued even after treatment for other spine conditions, then an MRI showed a compression fracture in her spine. She scheduled a consultation with Matt Bruns, an orthopedic nurse practitioner in the Bone Health Clinic at SSM Health DePaul Hospital. Patricia was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. She began treatment immediately and since March 2021 she has seen dramatic improvement in her bone health. Bruns and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gregory Nelson have built a bone health team of nurses,

physical therapists and dietitians who help people with osteoporosis to strengthen their bones and muscles for better overall health.
“One of every two women will break a bone after age 50, and then many go on to break another bone,” says Bruns. “If we treat and monitor bone health when patients first recover, we can prevent another fracture and improve their quality of life and lifespan.” The risks of osteoporosis include family history of osteoporosis, age 50+ years, low body weight, loss of height greater than 1 inch, illness treated with steroid medication, history of broken bones with

frequent falls, or history of smoking or alcohol use. Rather than wait for the signs of osteoporosis to develop, people who are at high risk for osteoporosis can make an appointment to see Bruns. Patricia says it was “a blessing to find out about the Bone Health Clinic.” She has returned to driving and is walking a mile every day for exercise.

Hospice Care When you hear that a loved one has an illness that is considered terminal, it’s shocking and sad. Some of us go into a form of denial, hoping that it’s not true. Some aren’t quite sure what to do. Although most of us have heard of Hospice Care, some may avoid calling on hospice thinking that, if they do, it means that they’re giving up. But, in reality, Hospice Care is the kindest thing that we can offer to loved ones that are diagnosed with a terminal illness. And the sooner it is started, the better. Patients in Hospice Care are more likely to have their pain controlled and they’re less likely to have to undergo countless doctor office visits and medical tests 18
that they don’t need. Hospice Care comes to you. With Hospice Care trained nurses work with a team that includes a doctor, social worker, counselor, home health aid and trained volunteers that all work together to meet physical, emotional and, if desired, spiritual needs. Hospice Care nurses are on-call 24/7 to make emergency visits or to answer questions. It provides pain & symptom management and also medical care that includes medical supplies, equipment and medications. It is extremely helpful for caretakers and family members, too, because they know that they’re not in it alone. In addition to medical support offered for the patient, hospice also offers

caregiver education, training and counseling for those that are interested. Hospice Care is available if a patient’s doctor states that they are expected to have six months or less to live. But if hospice is needed for longer than 6 months, it can be extended. What some do not realize is that hospice does not have to be a permanent choice. If the patient chooses to start treatments that could possibly cure their disease or if they get better unexpectedly, they can end the service. And if Hospice Care would ever be needed again, it would be available. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
(CMS), out of 1.3 million patients that received hospice care in 2014, 11% were discharged from hospice care and 13% survived beyond the life expectancy period of 6 months. In 2010 The New England Journal of Medicine stated that several studies also showed that hospice patients live longer, which is believed to be due to slower disease progression because of the expert pain and symptom management that hospice professionals are able to provide. Although facing the terminal illness of a loved one can be a difficult and scary time, Hospice Care can help.

Libraries are a wonderful place to visit at any age. But, did you know that the St. Charles City-County Library offers many wonderful classes, events, and services especially for Seniors? Library to You is a service committed to ensuring that every citizen in St. Charles County is able to enjoy a true library experience. If you are unable to visit the 20
Library due to advanced age, illness or disability, let them come to you. Library staff will mail your library materials to you or deliver them to your doorstep free of charge. They can also select items based on your material preferences. In addition to home delivery services, the St. Charles CityCounty Library also offers a

variety of services to communities and residential care centers including senior living communities, rehabilitation centers, group homes, adult day cares, etc., too. And Library staff are also available to speak to groups and organizations about a variety of topics. Each library branch has a collection of large print books as well as CD spoken books that can be beneficial to patrons with low vision or vision impairments. And each library also has applications for Wolfner Library services, which is a free library service that provides talking books and Braille books for Missourians who are unable to use standard print materials due to visual or physical disability. Materials are mailed to and from library patrons at their homes, postage paid.
The St. Charles City-County Library offers book discussion groups that meet on a regular basis and hosts tax assistance services for Seniors during tax season. Partnering with other community organizations makes it possible for the Library to offer a variety of classes and events especially for Seniors including tips on health and nutrition, aging in place, and many more.
