Augusta The town of Augusta was founded in 1836 by Leonard Harold, a settler that followed Daniel Boone. Originally named Mount Pleasant, in 1843 the name of the town was changed to Augusta. German immigrants were attracted to this area by glowing reports written by Gottfried Duden, a German researcherexplorer, where he described the scenic bluffs, vast plains and rich soil that followed the winding river. By the 1850’s, the riverfront’s stores,
hotels and saloons prospered by providing services to Missouri River travelers. The general store, post office and hotel, located on what was then Water Street, were owned and operated by Frederick Wencker. In 1859, Georg & Friedrich Muench founded Mount Pleasant Winery, one of the earliest wineries in the area. The wine cellars that were built by the Muench brothers from limestone and wood from the area, in 1881, are still in use at the winery, today.
Originally named Mount Pleasant, in 1843 the name of the town was changed to Augusta.

In 1872, the Missouri River changed its course, leaving Augusta without its boat landing. After the river shifted away from the town, Wencker moved his general store to what is now known as the “Uptown Store” at the corner of Locust and Lower Streets. With several hundred acres of fertile river bottomland newly exposed, more vineyards were planted in the 1880’s, and the area began receiving recognition for the distinctive flavors and profile of the wine being produced. In the later parts of the 19th century and early 20th century, the production volume from the area helped the Missouri wine industry compete for market share east of the Rocky Mountains. Augusta thrived as a farming community, producing grain, livestock and grapes, and as a trading center of craftsmen, merchants, hotels and wineries. Prohibition during 1920 and 1921 had a dramatic effect on the area causing the closure of local wineries and the uprooting of vineyards. A revival period occurred in the 1960’s, which spurred tourist interest. In 1980,
In 1980, Augusta was recognized as the first U.S. Wine District, or Viticultural Area # 1, because of its unique soil, climate, historical significance and quality of wines produced from grapes grown within the District’s boundaries.

Defiance Daniel Boone was one of the earliest known settlers in this area. In 1799, after receiving an invitation by Spain to move westward, he chose to leave Kentucky and obtained 850 acres in the area near what is now known as “The Daniel Boone Home”. At this time, Southwestern St. Charles County was a rural and isolated community. In 1888 the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad planned to extend its line through the area. As the railroad moved in…2 small towns began to develop…both wanting to become the economic center for the region. Local farmers and landowner, Richard Matson, recognized the benefits that a railroad could offer, and contributed 20 acres to assure a depot would be built in that location. As a result, a small station and other rail facilities were constructed on the

Matson boomed and wanted to continue to grow even larger. During the height of Matson’s growth, area farmers located 2 miles north of Matson, talked of developing a town of their own, as well. But the railroad steamed right on by…to Matson. The determined leaders of this town contacted the Railroad to let them know that they wanted a station of their own. They RESIDENT’S & VISITOR’S GUIDE

New Melle The “Boone Settlement” of Missouri was the first sizeable settlement of Americans of European decent west of the Mississippi River. Daniel Boone established the Settlement during the late 1790’s and the early 1800’s. In 1824, Gottfried Duden came from Germany to the western part of the Boone Settlement. After studying the area, he returned to Germany, where in 1829 he published reports that included a description

immigrants west of the Mississippi River. In 1839 Lutherans arrived from Melle, Germany, and named the settlement “New Melle”. In 1848 Franz Henry Porter secured a government land grant where the town was to be laid out and erected the first house in town. By 1860, more than 38,000 Germans had settled in the area of the lower Missouri River Valley. During the mid to late 1800’s, the town included 3 wagon shops, 2 carpenter shops and 2 cooper shops. There was also a hotel, a flouring mill and sawmill, which was combined, and a pork house. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church organized in 1844. The present stone church was erected in 1858. Melle M.E. Church was organized in 1871 and a brick church was built in 1878. New Melle had 3 schoolhouses…Public, Lutheran and Methodist. The old Public School House, built in 1898 still remains, today, located on Highway Z. Used as a school until 1952, this historic building has undergone renovation and is now Seven Stones Wine Garden. The Historical Society houses many treasures of the area’s past, which can be seen, today. The Boone-Duden Archives and Museum occupies a restored house, located at 3565 Mill Street, which was built of native brick in 1871 by John Friedrich Kamphoefner and his wife, Wilhelmina. The bricks were fired at the Stalhuth Kiln in the park across from St. Paul’s Lutheran church. It is
one of the oldest houses in New Melle. The Boone-Duden Archives and Museum is open Sundays from 12:30 to 4 and closed on holidays. A statue of a German Lutheran pioneer woman and child stands in town to pay tribute to the immigrants that left their homeland to settle in New Melle. The pedestal of the statue bears the words “NEW DREAMS, NEW HOPES, NEW MELLE”.
