Chairman’s Annual Report I am pleased to present my second chairman’s report to the Canterbury Branch Annual General Meeting. The past twelve months has been a busy time for your elected committee and also all the sub committees that contribute in so many ways to the success of this branch. Our main committee has remained the same as last year, however we are losing two key members of this team. Brendon Eason has been Vintage convenor for the past two years, but has also taken over as Hub Editor as well as introducing new computerised systems for the branch. I have been concerned that Brendon had taken on too much for one individual, and he has advised that he is standing down from the committee due to family and business commitments. I want to thank Brendon on your behalf for the skills he has brought to this committee and also the huge commitment he has made to his positions. We are fortunate that Brendon has agreed to continue as our Hub Editor, and we thank him for this commitment. George Kear has been appointed to the National Management Committee this year, and he will relinquish his role as P Group Convenor. George has been a key figure on this committee for a number of years and has driven some major initiatives such as the grounds redevelopment project, and he is also involved in running the Irishman Rally each year. I also want to thank George for the huge contribution he has made to this branch over the years. He has earned the reputation of being a “Go To” man when anything needs sorting. George has offered to remain a member of the committee to help out where he can, and I am very grateful for this offer. He will be able to mentor new members who join the committee, and will continue his role as part of the Irishman team. Our financial position is secure thanks to the careful scrutiny of our Treasurer Kevin Sarjeant, and our Secretary Rod Thrower has done an outstanding job as Secretary. This is a very demanding job as anyone who has held this position will know. At times it is almost a full time position, but without reward. This branch is the largest in the country by far, and has almost one sixth of the total membership of the Club. We are fortunate that Kevin and Rod have agreed to carry on in these two important positions. Dave Inwood has done an excellent job as Club Captain over the last year, but is not standing again as he has a major commitment to the Swap Meet Committee. We thank Dave for his contribution and know that he will be there to assist and advise his replacement. 5

Chairman’s Annual Report... I am aware that there are two young people who will accept nomination to the branch committee and it is very encouraging to see enthusiastic young members wanting to become involved in running the branch. They will bring new ideas to the committee. Please encourage and support them. Tim Palmer and Neil Shaskey have done an excellent job as convenors and they are both willing to continue on the committee. Philip Jeeves has been the motorcycle rep on our committee and has made a major contribution over the last year. After the committee had discussed the need to paint the main hall, Phil sought quotes for the painting and replacement of the old louvre windows with new double glazed units with remote openers. In consultation with committee members, he arranged the painting and installation of the windows and the project came in on time and under budget. Ross Butler has been the parts shed representative and has made a valuable contribution to our committee. The parts shed continues to make a major financial contribution to this branch. The large team of workers who toil away every Wednesday have made our facility the envy of other branches, and the source of many parts for restorations around the country. Mike Foster is the man who quietly gets on with all those important maintenance jobs around the clubrooms and grounds and who organises the monthly maintenance team on the first Sunday of each month. Thanks to those who regularly turn up to help. I would encourage members who have a few hours to spare to come out and assist Mike on Sundays. He will be very grateful for your help, and there are always little jobs to do. Mike spends a huge amount of time at our grounds, and members who visit regularly could be forgiven for thinking he lives there. The new bar facilities have been a major improvement to our clubrooms and we want to sincerely thank all those involved in designing and building the new facilities. This was a major job which took several months to complete, and some members spent hundreds of hours working on the project, and saving this branch thousands of dollars. We are eternally grateful for your generous contribution, and raise a glass to you each time we visit the bar. Our bar managers, Gill Stevenson and Amanda Franklin do an amazing job and the bar makes a major contribution to the finances of this branch.

6

Chairman’s Annual Report... Colin Hey is another major contributor to our branch committee, and as Chair of the swap meet committee he has an important task each year. We all appreciate the contribution made by all those who help run this annual event, and the huge financial return they manage to generate. This branch could not exist without the money generated by this event. Colin has also been responsible for running the Daffodil rally each year as our part of the VCC National Day. This is another event which has been very successful and raised thousands of dollars for the Cancer Society. Our noggin displays each month are arranged by Don Muller, and this can be quite a demanding task at times. Don Bennetts is our VIC certifier and is responsible for all the VIC cards and renewals generated by this branch. Tony Becker continues his excellent work as the Beaded Wheels Scribe for the branch and the Campions are still responsible for Barn bookings and campsites. Owen Genet and Kay Shaskey have for years looked after our library, which continues to expand, and is in need of an extension to the facility. John Kuipers 9-90’s group is as popular as ever, and the mid week outings usually see more entrants than some of our main branch events. Food for thought.

Now that the bar has been upgraded, and the clubrooms repainted, we will be looking to improve the interior of our facilities, and to upgrade the kitchen facilities. I want to form a small sub-committee of committee members, and representatives of those who actually use and work in the kitchen, so we all have a clear understanding of what is required and how best to achieve it. Progress will depend on what work will be involved, and what new equipment is needed. We should be able to at least make a start on this during the next twelve months. Looking forward, we will offer to host a National AGM in the near future, and I hope that we can encourage a large contingent of Canterbury Branch members to enter the 2021 International Festival event in Taranaki in eighteen months time. I would encourage members to plan to travel together in groups and will be seeking names of members who intend to enter this event. John Coomber Branch Chairman

Treasurer’s Annual Report The Club had a financial surplus of $24,571 for the 2018/19 year slightly ahead of last year’s surplus $20,791 (before the Fire engine payout ) The cash surplus was $42,035 after adding back deprecation written off of $17,464. This was a good result and enabled the Club to complete major remodelling of the bar and purchase a new mower without using our reserve funds. The swap meet contributed another record surplus of $46,883 which is approximately 31% of our income and the parts shed contributed a record amount of $34,996 or 23% of our income. The members running these divisions deserve a big vote of thanks for the Club. Subscriptions where flat at $41,530 and covered only 33% of our annual operating costs. On the expenditure side most costs were pretty much as budgeted except that the building repaint did not happen till April and will therefore be in next year’s expenses and whilst the cost of manufacturing the new windows has been expensed this year the cost of installing same did not occur till April and will likewise show up in next year’s accounts. You will note that no rally subsidies are recorded this year as the committee decided that it was more accurate to report the true rally costs. However it needs to be emphasised that no rally organiser should be out of pocket and all costs and any shortfall will be covered by the Club organisers just need to complete a rally report form and list their expenses for reimbursement. The Statement of Financial position as at 31 March 2019 shows the club to be in a sound financial position. Investment accounts total $264,064 but this does include the fire engine insurance payout which will be largely spent on its restoration. Working capital records a deficit of $32,106 however $46,015 of this deficit is accounting recognition of sums paid to us in advance for services we will render in the next financial year. I would like to record my sincere thanks to Murray Trounson for his guidance and help with the computer programme. Kevin Sarjeant - Club Treasurer

Club Captain’s Annual Report As always the past year has been eventful and busy. I have had help from many of the club members and especially from the current members of the Committee. Also a big thank you to those members who volunteered to organise some of the runs. As always many hands make light work so do not be afraid to put up your hand. From my observations all the rallies, runs and activities of the club seem to have been enjoyable for most participants and really successful. The maintenance team has been working away tirelessly as always and also the grounds restoration group - to have our facility looking great. Thank you to those dedicated groups ably led by Mike Foster and Peter Gatehouse. The Parts Shed has had a really successful year, The Swap meet - once again - the weather doing us no favours - was also a success. Thanks to both of these teams for producing the main incomes for our club. Future rallies coming up that will require an Organiser - Women Drivers, Show Weekend Tour and Homestead Run. There are a couple of positions vacant on the Committee. If any of you are prepared to step in please fill in the form in the Hub - you will probably enjoy being part of the running of our club. I do not intend to stand for the Club Captain's position again this year and hope to see another club member volunteer. Dave Inwood Club Captain

Secretary’s Annual Report Well here we are again two years in, lots achieved last year, new bar completed, nearly 250 members receiving The Hub by email, Main hall windows replaced and outside painted, Parts Engine Shed completed, new mower purchased plus lots of other smaller sundry items and repairs for Maintenance Team. Next, kitchen upgrade for main hall. I would like to personally thank all those that have in any way helped us achieve these goals. If there is something we have done that is not to your liking then I can only say the committee are happy to receive your complaint in writing so we can see the merits of your ideas and the committee can discuss it in a rational way. During last year Jan to Dec 2018 we signed up 65 New Members including joint, at the end of the Club's financial year we were left with 29 unfinancial members of which 2 were reinstated after being removed from the National Register. This does not include members who resigned during the year or passed away. We need to ask ourselves why did this result at the end take place, 27 members lost for whatever reason, 8 were new members, did we not make them welcome, did we just let them blend into the surroundings. I implore you when you are out on the rallies or at the Noggin to take notice of the strangers to make the effort to approach them and welcome them to your circle, we are all here for different reasons but if you don't feel welcome are you going to come back? Your Secretary Rod

Vintage Convenor’s Annual Report This year's rally started at the clubrooms at McLeans Island with morning tea, while the entrants awaited their appointed start times for the Timed Section of the rally. The weather cleared from a cold Southerly to a beautiful sunny day. The rally meandered through the Canterbury Plains to finish at Glenroy Lodge Camp. A 40 mile run, including a time trial, 3 x check points and field tests after lunch in the grounds of Glenroy. 42 vehicles managed to attend. Thank you all for making the Vintage Section so magical and fun. To me, that’s what makes the VCC so special, people enjoying using their vehicles in a safe and enjoyable way. It would be a shame if all the cars of ‘older’ ilk ended up just in museums or sheds for people to look at but not to touch. I would love to encourage members who feel they might not want to bring their vehicle out on their own to involve family members or friends to drive their vehicle or even navigate. Rallying is fun when you do it as a team! So… if you have a road-worthy and club-eligible vehicle dated between 1919 and 1931, please consider coming along to enjoy your vehicles alongside members who have vehicles of a similar age. Who knows, you may even win a prize! I am standing down this year as a Committee Member and the Vintage Convenor. Thank you to all of those who supported me over the last couple of years. Brendon Eason - Vintage Convenor

Maintenance Annual Report Another year has come and gone with the usual work around the grounds mowing, weed eating and weed control. Over the summer period the mowing was down to a minimum, But the daily grind of shifting and setting up of the K line to water the new trees and shrubs continued. With the lack of volunteer’s we did not get as much done as we would have liked . Derek and Anne Meynell once again spent the easter week tree trimming gardening and generally cleaning up the garden plots. We purchased a smaller ride on mower during the year to assist with mowing around the trees and smaller lawns which was normally down with a small rotocut. A big thankyou to all Helpers over the last year. In the last few weeks we had a pipe spring a leak outside the camp kitchen which entailed breaking up the concrete path to effect necessary repairs. The hall looks great after it has been painted and the new windows installed Thank to Philip Jeeves and his team Cheers Mike Foster - Maintenance Rep

Motorcycle Section Annual Report It is my privilege to present below my report on behalf of the Motorcycle Section for the 2018 - 2019 season. The committee has hardly changed from the previous year, with just one new member and a change of Chairman. Les Freeman was our Chairman for five years but has now stepped down, although he is still an active member of the committee. We all thank you for your excellent leadership over that time.

We still continue with a full calendar of events for our motorcycling enthusiasts, with three main annual events plus monthly informal Fish and Chip Runs, monthly noggins and occasional social / working bees around Social Corner. There are also a number of other specialist events all through the year. Due to the unusual timing of Labour Weekend last year, we were faced with both our Girder Fork Run to Akaroa, and our Annual Rally on following weekends. 27 riders took their early bikes to Akaroa for the weekend, and then 24 competed in our Annual Rally. Our other major rally is the Jim Thoohey Memorial Run in mid March. This year we went to Fairlie for the night, and once again, it was enjoyed by all those that attended. Social Corner continues to be used on a regular basis, and we invite all members to take advantage of this facility as it provides an excellent place for gatherings. Finally I would like to thank the committee for the support they have shown me through the year. It is a pleasure and fun to work with them. Thanks

Philip Jeeves - Motorcycle Convenor.

Want to get the most out of your Club Membership? Join a committee, a working group, a sub-committee, or help on a rally as a Marshall. It is because of volunteers that our club is so well supported and well run. Join in, take part and be involved and enjoy the Vintage Car Club!

The Hub Report This year saw many more members taking up the opportunity to get their copies of The Hub via email or online. We now have over 280 members on our email list each month, which I think is wonderful.

Please feel free to send me any funny stories, rally summaries, restoration photos, anything you think other members may appreciate. I am trying to add a little humour and a few puzzles each month to keep you guessing and keep you laughing. The magazine reflects our branch, and as such should have as much input from members as possible. Thank you, Brendon Eason - Hub Editor

17

Vehicle Identification Card Report This year there have been 25 new Vics issued. 34 Authenticity Statements and 28 Renewals. There has been a steady increase n the number of non members getting authenticity statements so they can register their vehicles. These need to be done through the VCC and non members pay a fee to the Club for this service. Could applicants please make sure that their forms are filled in correctly and that the photos are the correct size to avoid delays in getting these processed. There is still a problem with members not filling in the forms completely and leaving out things like the size of the tyres etc. Members are now being asked to provide photos of the engine and chassis/frame numbers when applying or renewing their Vic. There is still a problem with members sending forms for Vic renewals and authenticity statements to Head Office. These all need to be sent to the Branch to be signed off. Sending them to the Head Office always delays the process. Please make sure that they are either send to the Branch Secretary or directly to me. I would like to thank the members who have assisted me during the past year. Don Bennetts

Parts Shed Annual Report The 2018-19 season has seen a lot of activity in and around the parts shed and area with a number of different vehicles coming in, some of which are in very poor condition but which still have lots of useable parts. Also this year we were fortunate enough to be offered the chance to help clear out the parts area of an autoservice business which had specialised in the maintenance of Triumph cars, particularly 2000 and 2500 models. Over the years the retiring owner had dismantled a lot of the various models and had built up a very large range of parts which have been greeted with enthusiasm by the large group of Triumph owners in our Branch. We recently received a range of mainly Chevrolet parts, a large number of which are new old stock. These came from the estate of a late long-term member who stipulated that they should come to the Parts Shed. Engines in the engine shed are being sorted into brands (where possible), quite a task taken on by Bob Gough and Iain Sim exercising their skills with the little forklift. Complete cars received include a Lada, no less, a Morris Marina and a side-valve Morris Minor. The Marina and Minor both have regos on hold and have been in their respective families’ ownership from new. There are plans to fence off an area behind the main shed where it is hoped that mudguards and doors can be racked so that they may be more easily identified. The Parts Shed committee meets regularly and continues to ensure that everything goes along smoothly. There is always a large turnout of Branch members each Wednesday afternoon, both as workers and those looking for parts. These days are quite social with many interesting discussions and stories. Sundays scheduled for opening are usually well looked after by John Lebrun, Graeme Sword and John Cutler. As will be seen in the Annual Accounts, quite a substantial amount is taken over the year and considering there are no really large value sales, there are lots of individual purchases to reach this amount. Regardless of the quantity of items selling and going, the place still appears full. Ross Butler
