CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The Veteran Annual Rally and the Vintage Annual Rally on the programem for the same day and meeting at the same place for lunch were abandoned because of the appalling weather on the day. ROSS BUTLER Fortunately, the organisers were Chairman able to have an email sent round ph 03 352 3160 the entrants advising that the lunch would go ahead which was pleasing for a lot of people who arrived at the venue, mostly in moderns. It would appear that emails are going to play a greater part in future in various Club activities. The Show Weekend tour was well supported and enjoyed great weather and interesting activities. A report covering this is in this edition of The Hub and our thanks go to Dave Inwood for his planning and setting it up for 2020. Weather for the Homestead Run was not great for the start but did improve as the day went on with 94 of the 108 entered starting on what proved to be a very interesting and informative run. Thanks for all the preparation and organising of this event go to Jens and Karen Christensen for setting up what was a very successful and traditionally a very popular occasion. Entry forms for events scheduled for January and February, including the Grand Garden Party and Annual Rally are in this edition of The Hub and online at our website. Canterbury Branch is hosting the 2021 VCC National AGM in August next year and a sub-committee, headed by Marilyn McKinlay and Katryna Shaw has planning for this underway. As it is the 75th Annual Conference it is hoped that the occasion will be celebrated accordingly and a special Rally on the Friday to start the weekend’s activities off is to be organised. More news on this to follow as planning progresses. That’s it for 2020, a different sort of year with the Covid-19 virus creating challenges that have necessitated some changes from normal routines. Hopefully, the Christmas season will not be too different and our Best Wishes go to you and your families for a very happy Christmas and a great New Year. 3
SECRETARY’S REPORT Well what a month, rained out Vintage/Veteran rallies on Sunday, but something salvaged from that in a nice lunch at the Oxford Hotel. Well done Colin and Mike. Cold cloudy drizzly day with an early start to the Homestead Run. It was great to see a good turn out anyway. Well done Jens and his team standing out in the cold and wet. (Hardy bunch those motorcyclists.)

Thanks to all who have been part of helping in whatever small way to the running of this huge branch. Without you people, who step up on a regular basis, I wonder if we would still be functioning as well as we do. Thank you To those who have struggled with health or family issues through the year may 2021 improve for you all. For those of you who have made my job easier in whatever way thank you, for those that haven’t remember “don’t shoot the messenger.” I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and trouble-free motoring year and may you find a treasure in your stocking. See you around NEW MEMBERS

There are very limited costs we can reduce so the Committee has decided to continue with the current electronic version of The HUB and to recover part of printing and postage costs from those members who require a printed copy. So to receive a printed HUB from February 2021 onwards members need to pay $41.60 in to the Branch’s bank account by 21 January 2021 noting your name membership number and HUB. This fee will cover the 11 editions to December 2021 and shares the costs more equitably amongst members. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ROAD IDEA GETS POSITIVE RESPONSE I have been amazed at the positive reaction after my suggestion regarding a road in our property at Cutler Park to use for early cars and bikes. Everything from “it would be great to ride my motorcycle without having to worry about traffic” to “I need to learn to drive my Ford T and that’s not possible in suburbia but I could put it on a trailer and bring it out here.”It was also suggested early cars could run on the Sunday of our cars and coffee. It certainly seems support is out there. Chris Parker.
ER4184 ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY UTILITY I am trying to trace the history of this vehicle, and would appreciate any information regarding the early days of its life. Apparently the Ute started life in Wellington, as a saloon, chassis No C342679. A 1954 MKI preselect saloon and was delivered to a Mr H Isherwood of Wellington sometime after April of that year. In July of 1958 an A/S sedan experienced rear end damage after sliding on ice and going over the edge of the Petone over-bridge and was subsequently sold at tender. Research indicates it was turned into a utility vehicle – this car. The early history of the car has been the subject of much conjecture over the years. The main problem with tracing the history is that most of the people involved have passed on so most evidence is anecdotal, and at the best, vague and occasionally incorrect. In the first instance I had assumed it was George Barnes who had built the ute, as he was well known in the Levin area for his Ute conversions –notably the Daimler V8 now used as a promotional vehicle by the Daimler Parts Club in Christchurch, but discussions with George’s son Richard have revealed it was most probably a firm called ‘Bolderson and Chritchley’ responsible for the build. Talking with tradesmen who worked with his father in Levin around that time Richard reports that they all remember the light green/blue vehicle being 7
constructed on the site presently occupied by PaknSave in Levin. In about 1960 the late Bob Bruce (longtime member of the Armstrong Siddeley Car Photos courtesy of Ivan Gardiner Club,) arranged the purchase of the Ute for his brother David, to be used on the family farm in Greendale, mid Canterbury and there it stayed until the mid 1980s. Graeme Taylor of Temuka reported in 1993 that the only clue to its history was a lube sticker from Paraparaumu. It passed through a couple of hands – Grant Lester of Geraldine and Peter Sidey of Christchurch. The car is still in one piece, dry stored in Christchurch but badly needs some TLC. Any information in confirming the history of ER4184 would be greatly appreciated. Don McAlpine 027 243 8417 donmcalpine@xtra.co.nz

VINTAGE REPORT
MIKE MILNE Vintage Convenor Ph 02 235 7246
Vintage Annual Rally 2020 (Almost) Due to the high winds and rain that had lashed Canterbury overnight and on the day of the rally, it was decided to postpone the event. This was a real shame as there have been so many events cancelled due to COVID this year and I know people were keen to get out and about. The day became a social event with most of the rally entrants still meeting at the hotel for the BBQ lunch. It was a great atmosphere as we had the hotel booked out for the Veteran and Vintage sections. Most of us chose to take a modern, but George Kear travelled the day in his Chevrolet with only mild complaints from one passenger about the cold. The Rally Run will now take place on Saturday 12 December at Cutler Park. Please meet at 10:30am . The first car will leave at 11am. There will be no lunch provided on the day. Those that have already paid for the rally and not received the rally plaque, will receive it in the rally pack on the day. If you cannot make the run and have not received you rally plaque, please just contact me. Safe Motoring and Merry Christmas

VETERAN REPORT
COLIN HEY Veteran Convenor Ph 359-8737 021 883 807 It’s been a mixed month for the veteran car and bike owners – a really successful gathering at the Hororata Highland Games on Saturday 7th November for the Dutton Garage Malvern Run, followed a day later with a very wet day for what should have been the Annual Veteran Rally. MALVERN RUN TO HORORATA HIGHLAND GAMES SATURDAY 7TH NOVEMBER
Having been originally delayed in March because of covid-19, the ‘alternative’ day for the Dutton Garage Malvern Run organised by Malcolm McGibbon was a visit to and a display at the Hororata Highland Games. Malcolm’s meticulous planning had us assemble first in Darfield at the recreation centre between 9am and 9.30 for registration and instructions for the day, and from there we were to drive or trailer the cars to the war memorial just out of Hororata. I had left our 1912 Wolseley in Darfield at my son’s place in its trailer after the Gore National Veteran Rally three weeks before, so all I had to do was give it a quick clean and I was on my way to Hororata on a coolish morning. It took only around 30 minutes for the trip, arriving at the memorial first, just ahead of Tim and James Palmer in the family 1912 Unic. Others soon began arriving – most by road, and several on trailers which were soon unloaded, started up and ready to go. By 10am there were a total of 27 vehicles – 12 of them veteran, 6 vintage, and the rest PV – a great display representing all eras of vehicles catered for by our club. It was especially good to see Ashburton members there – Rob and Dianne Ross with their curved-dash 11
Brass cars generated plenty of interest.
Oldsmobile and Gavin and Annette Hunt with their 1903 Darracq there to support our efforts. Just before 10.30 one of the officials arrived in a quad sideby-side, and led us the short distance down the road to the domain, where we went in the display gate. We were held for a minute or so whilst everyone arrived, and then paraded through the crowd of several thousand people in order of oldest to newest vehicles, and then on into our allocated display area. The crowd was then unleashed to view the vehicles close-up, and boy was there a rush to them! The brass cars in particular attracted lots of attention, and were particularly popular with young families right through the whole day. We committed to display the cars until 4.00pm, and the day went very quickly. There were lots of highland events for teams and individuals, highland dancing, pipe band competitions, and the veritable strong-man and strongwoman competitions that were particularly popular (just how did that woman manage to pick up the 100kg stone and put it on top of a barrel?). It was warm all day, and although the weather looked threatening from about 2.00pm, we all managed to get back home with only a few spots on the windscreen. A great day out, a great way to promote our club and hobby, and something that may well be repeated next year. A special thanks to Malcolm and Anita McGibbon for organising the day, and to Royden Mauger from Dutton Garage who not only supported the event financially but also turned out in their ‘shop’ Austin A40 utility. 12
ANNUAL VETERAN RALLY – SUNDAY 8TH NOVEMBER
Having been at the above-mentioned Highland Games the day before, a check on the weather forecast there for the Sunday bore grim news! One-hundred percent guarantee of heavy rain until 3.00pm, when the chance of rain dropped to 90%. It was obvious we were in for a very wet rally, so with some of the entrants on hand at Hororata, a straw-pole was taken and the unanimous decision was to postpone the rally, but still go ahead with the proposed lunch-time meal (which had already been booked and paid for) at the Rustic Hotel in Oxford – our finish destination for the rally. The proposed day was to have begun in Darfield, rallying from there over the Waimakariri Gorge, then a diversion up through the View Hill and Coopers Creek areas to finish in Oxford. There we were to be joined by the Annual Vintage Rally, who were coming from Cutler Park. With 12 confirmed entries for the Veteran Rally, it was not difficult to contact everyone and let them know the alternative plan. Ten of the 12 couples registered for the rally quickly agreed to still turn up at Oxford for the BBQ lunch, where combined with the Vintage Rally (who took the same option as us), 56 people enjoyed lunch in the pub – a very social and happy occasion enjoyed by everyone present. Yes, we may be a bit soft, but in the end everyone agreed it was the right decision, our drivers and passengers and old cars stayed dry and clean (except for George and Maryann Kear who still turned up in their 1930 Chevrolet), and there were no breakdowns caused by wet magnetos or loss of brakes or wipers. An alternative date for the Annual Veteran Rally will be scheduled earlyish next year, probably starting at Cutler Park and maybe incorporating some garden visits and a BBQ tea together. The date will be advised in the New Year. There are a few trophies to find homes for, but this will be the secondary reason for the event. OTHER VETERAN NEWS
We pass on our condolences to the Palmer family on the recent passing of John Palmer, who has long-since nurtured his sons into the motoring and veteran-car world. The family Unic will no doubt continue to be motored by Tim and carry the memories on. George Lee is nearing completion of his second Alldays & Onions project, a 1904 single-cylinder , model. Apparently it’s at a driveable stage, but George wants to finish it 13
completely before driving it so any mechanical teething issues can then be resolved without having the worry of other work still required to finish the restoration. Our sympathy goes out to Alister McKenzie who is unable to drive for the next 11 months for medical reasons. One can only polish the brass on a Model T so often, so we hope you can still satisfy your veteran interests whilst in lock-out Alister (and Denise). We’re all thinking of you.
Dave Backhouse (left) and Neil McFedries celebrate a job well done.
Well done Neil McFedries and David Backhouse, who recently completed a full overhaul of the engine on Kathryn Smith’s 1914 Wolseley 16/20 Landaulet, and achieved a successful fire-up about three weeks ago. I was fortunate enough to be there, and after priming both fuel and oil feeds, it fired and ran on the first turn of the starter. It last ran in 2016 when a failed big-end spelled the need for a re-build. Great to see Brian Newberry out enjoying the fabulous 1913 Nazzaro. It attracted lots of attention at the recent Malvern Run. Also great to see Tom Stephens motoring the 1905 Argyll there too – it was one of two Scottish vehicles at the Highland Games, the other being Don and Judy Bennetts’ 1912 Albion Commercial. And now a reminder about a few coming events. Don’t forget the Dunedin to Brighton Run is happening on 16th January. Always a great weekend of veteran activity with like-minded enthusiasts, and well supported by the city of 14
Dunedin too. For registration details contact Colin Winter on 03 456 4382 or email wolseley2@xtra.co.nz. Jenny and I rate this as one of our favourite events – great people, great cars, very social, and a great event for the public of Dunedin. Also, I really do encourage you to bring your veteran cars, commercials and bikes out to the Boxing Day run, and perhaps the Picnic Run on the 10th January. And last but not least, don’t forget the Garden Party on 7th February. The run to the Motukarara location is veteranfriendly, and best of all, you will get preferential parking on the lawn at the venue. Let’s put on a good show there! See details in this Hub and get your entry in now. As the Veteran Convenor, I’m assembling an email contact list for all of our branch members with veteran vehicles from our members’ list. That way I can hopefully contact you all about veteran events and happenings, and hopefully encourage a few more owners to get their veteran vehicles out of hibernation and out to events. So, if you get an email from me don’t be surprised! You will of course have the option not to be contacted if that is what you wish. But hey, if you own one and haven’t had it out for a while, why not get some petrol and oil circulating again? Have a great Christmas everyone.
Ashburton members supported us in force, Rob and Dianne Ross showed up with their immaculate curved-dash Oldsmobile. 15
2020 Show Weekend Tour
Leigh and Tony Craythorn–Austin A40 Sports. The road to the Cass river.
Report by
Thirty cars (65 people) gathered at the ANON Glentunnel Community Centre car park to receive their touring instructions from Linda and Dave Inwood for the 2020 Show Weekend Tour on the Friday morning of the long weekend. There was time for a cuppa and a chat (enjoying the sunny mild weather) before travelling via Rakaia Gorge for Fairlie, where the Tour was based. Quite a long detour towards Mayfield was encountered, but with the lovely scenery, it gave us time to appreciate more of the surrounding countryside (a bonus.) On approaching Geraldine, the group visited Roger Mahan’s new museum – a very large building with rare veterans, vintage vehicles, trucks, stationary engines and earthmoving equipment all beautifully presented. This was also our lunch stop, with many enjoying their picnic on the lawn, or sitting inside where tables and chairs had been put out for our use. Geraldine was holding their festival and fete with the main street closed where numerous stalls had been set up. Some were lucky to find a park to browse, while the rest of us continued on to Pleasant Point, where a ride on the train down to the Pleasant Point Railway Museum and workshop had been arranged. We motored on to our various accommodation in Fairlie, where we made our own arrangements for the night’s meal. We met again at 9.00 am on the Saturday morning opposite the Gladstone Hotel on the main street of Fairlie, the weather still fine. We headed south towards Timaru making our way to the Mackenzie Pass. Some shingle roads were part of the instructions, with alternative directions for those who chose not to travel on them. We came across a mob of sheep and lambs being driven to a new paddock and this reinforced that we were motoring in the country with all its various sights (and smells.) 16
A number stopped at the Mackenzie Memorial at the top of the pass. This was erected on the spot where the infamous James Mackenzie (sheep rustler) and two Maori shepherds (Taiko and Seventeen) were captured by John Sidebottom. This three-sided obelisk records the story in English, Gaelic and Maori and made a good chance to stop to admire the surrounding Mackenzie country while enjoying a cuppa. We passed through Tekapo, travelled on past the Mt John access road and on to Glenmore Station, our lunch stop. This is a High-Country Station (over 150,000 hectares) on the shores of Lake Tekapo where Merinos, cattle and deer make up their farming operation including a merino stud. After enjoying our picnic on their spacious lawn surrounded by large shady trees, Will Murray welcomed and spoke to us, giving us the history of the Station. His wife Emily and their three children, are the fifth generation of their family to farm and live there. It was such a peaceful spot – watching the boys fishing for trout in their pond (very sportingly returning them to the water), exploring the gardens etc but soon it was time to carry on to Fairlie, with a chance to check out Lake McGregor and Lake Alexandrina on the way. The group met at the Gladstone Hotel for Saturday night’s meal which was delicious and served without fuss - quite a feat with the numbers of our group. We travelled individually home on Sunday with the good weather continuing. Thank you, Dave and Linda, for organizing the successful tour – great countryside, great motoring, great company, great weather – all in all, a great weekend.

Homestead Run Always a must-do branch event for us, Report by and capably organised by Jens and Karen COLIN HEY Christensen, this year’s Homestead Run on Sunday 21st November did not disappoint. This was despite a rather grim weather forecast, which only turned out to deliver a few showers on the day. Definitely nothing that spoiled the day at all, except perhaps for the few brave souls who arrived in open cars but appeared to be well prepared for it. Helmets off too to Dave and Linda Malcom, who were the only motorcyclists on the run, doing it on their beautiful Triumph motorcycle. Our assembly place was the Prebbleton Domain, where just over 100 vehicles gathered in anticipation of a great day out. Jens was helped by Joseph McClintock to check everyone in and hand out the instructions, and it wasn’t long before we were on the road to our first homestead, Killinchy House near Leeston. The run there took us out through Halswell and Lincoln, then towards Greenpark, out through Coes Ford, and then through Doyleston and on to Killinchy – an easy run on seldom-travelled sealed roads with very little traffic. Currently owned by James and Kath Cochrane, Killinchy Homestead is an elegant but modest two-story home set in a beautiful wooded garden, now sitting on 4Ha of the original

Killinchy Homesteadowner James Cochran provides some history.
2000-acre block. It was fully restored in the 1990s, keeping all of the important original fittings and features both inside and out, and it looks resplendent in it’s current condition. We were able to park on either side of its long driveway, and were free to wander around the garden before James gave us a talk on the history of the property once we’d all arrived. The home has weathered many storms and survived a couple of recent disasters, including a direct lightning strike in 2005 which blew out many windows and damaged most electrical fittings, and of course the two Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 – the latter with only superficial damage. After an hour or so we were on our way again, this time to Strathearn Homestead, only about 10 minutes drive away and near Doyleston. This homestead has been in the same family for six generations, and like Killinchy, sits amongst mature trees and still retains many of the original farm buildings nearby. Here we were able to park amongst the trees, before assembling at and in one of the nearby empty sheds where the owners Geoffrey and Julie Lill gave us a talk on the history of the property. The original house has been extended a few times, and recently underwent major renovations to shift the living areas to the north side of the house to better utilise sunshine and the outdoor views. Its original form has been kept however, and the large garden and lawn area sets it off perfectly. Here we were able to enjoy our picnic lunches in between very light showers which didn’t cause any problems at all. At 1.30pm we headed off again, this time to the fabulous Broadfield Gardens in Selwyn Road, not too far from our start point earlier in the day. As Jens commented, this is a garden just waiting for a homestead! We were guided into the property to park on the large lawn area at the south end of the property, and then left free to wander around the garden at our leisure. The garden was started 27 years ago from bare paddocks by Mr David Hobbs as a measure to relieve stress, and is now one of 12 gardens in NZ with a NZ Gardens Trust status and has a six-star rating. It is absolutely stunning! It is filled with hundreds of species of trees and shrubs, sculptures and paintings, formal ponds with long vistas, wooded areas and lawns, interesting ‘junk’ items, and even has an elevated hill offering tree-top views of the whole property. Everyone was totally impressed. Best of all, the weather was starting to come out sunny, and many spent time enjoying afternoon tea on the lawn amongst our cars and good friends. The perfect way to end a thoroughly enjoyable day. Special thanks to Jens and his many helpers on the run – you all looked after us superbly well, with clear and easy to follow instructions, introductions to our hosts for the day, good parking, and all the comforts we needed to get the most out of the day. 19

WAYNE STOCKS Parts Shed
Well, November has been a bit quiet for us, I think the weather has had a lot to do with it, half rain half heat wave. Never mind it allowed us to get the body parts in the compound tidied up and made accessible again, thanks to Ian and Bob. We made one recovery with the new trailer out to Fernside where we recovered a 1920s Oldsmobile made into a farm truck as so many were. It all went like a military exercise with the advance crew arriving and clearing the tray of parts then I arrived and pulled it out of the barn ready for loading. Then the trailer arrived with the General,Ross Butler in charge with his trusty driver Mike Foster. We winched the Olds’ onto the trailer when the heavy recovery arrived in the command of Tony Meikle who lifted the original Olds’ engine onto his trailer and all away back to HQ within the hour. Many thanks to John Smith (member) for his generous donation and his help in loading. Thanks again John. The Parts Shed will be closing for the Christmas break on 16 December until Wednesday 13 January. Happy motoring everyone.

COMMERCIAL REPORT Thanks to Mike Glenday for hosting the November Commercial Noggin at his place, as always a good opportunity to have a poke around the garages and sheds, and a catch up with the regulars.
NEIL SHASKEY Commercial Convenor
Tony Craythorne has kindly offered to host the Commercial Xmas BBQ this year, this will be on the usual 3rd Wednesday of the month 16th December, from 5.30pm at 34a Harrowdale Drive, Avonhead. Please come along, bring your partners who probably don’t normally attend (but on occasion end up sorting out the supper), and bring a contribution to the shared dinner and something to throw on the BBQ. The Annual Commercial Rally is on 20th Feb 2021, this is being arranged in conjunction with the Annual Motorcycle Rally. Currently I’m a little short on details but please mark it on your calendar and the entry form will be in the February Hub, fortunately I’m well practiced at sorting things out at the last minute. In the process of some recent tidying of the house and garage I’ve managed to locate the 2020 Commercial rally plaques, so for those of you who haven’t already collected theirs in person I’ll get them in the mail, just in time to start on arranging the next ones. Happy motoring

November 2020 run The day turned out fine after the rain was predicted. No NZ Cup for 18 dedicated ‘Solex riders as we lined up at VCC member John and Jenny Thomson’s property on Sawyers Arms Rd for a jaunt around the Harewood, Casebrook, Cavendish Regents Park and Northwood areas. Crikey what a lot of nice new homes have gone up in these areas. Early on in the run John took us down Orchard Rd past the covid testing site, I must admit we were a bit worried John might have jacked us up to be tested, but no he hadn’t – whew. But first it was a viewing of John’s sheds, what a treasure trove he has hidden away in there. Some magnificent vehicles including a Model T Ford and a Straight 8 Buick both lovingly cared for. Also sighted in the sheds were a couple of early Farmall Tractors. One of these, a Farmall model Super BM, John explained was the type he first cut his teeth on as a young lad when he was learning farming. He was only allowed to keep it in low gear as his boss didn’t trust him to go very fast in case of wiping out fence posts. Now John has advanced to riding a Solex. A great ride ending up at the Papanui Club for a bite to eat and plenty of chatter, we could even watch some of the racing on the big screens, not that I think anybody did. Thanks for the day John

EXCELLENT DAY OUT! VCC CANTERBURY
9-90s
WINTER DOESN’T STOP US THE MORE THE MERRIER!
JOHN KUIPERS A run to Methven. Well Graham and 9-90’s Margaret Tulett organised a day to Coordinator remember. You couldn’t have wished for any better weather. Not many had heard about this destination, a Citroën collection in Methven. It just blew us away! A big thank you to Bruce Williams for sharing it with us. He had a wee story about each car. Then off to McLennan Reserve or Awa Awa. The rhododendrons were all in bloom. Glorious in all different colours. A fabulous venue for lunch. We had a good raffle, I think we had about 45 cars and the Tuletts donated the entry fees to the Rolleston St John. I hope that you will never need them. Thank you Graham and Margaret for a great day. I twisted a few arms and we have a full team (thankyou Wendy) for 2021 right up to December. So that’s all organised. February 10 2021 Organisers George Nimmo and Jack Porter. Meet at The Peg Carpark, Belfast Hotel at 9.55am for a day in the Waipara Valley. Looking forward to seeing you at the Christmas Lunch if you have booked. Last, but not least, I wish all my friends, enemies and all the people who think they can do a better job than we do a Merry Christmas and prosperous 2021.
9-90s November. Bruce William’s private Citroën museum, followed by leisurely picnic at Mount Hutt’s Te Awa Awa Rhododendron domain. 24

Our last OCBC for the year was held on Sunday 15th November. Another good turnout, although slightly down in numbers on previous OCBCs. It was great to see the Triumph TR register using it as the starting point for their final run for the year, with many nice examples arriving and then departing on their run about 10.30am. There will be no OCBC in December and January given the business of this period, and we will resume again in February, the third Sunday being 21 February. A reminder will be in February’s Hub. Thanks to everyone who has supported this event for the year – it’s proved a good incentive to get our cars out and give them some exercise, and enjoy and display them to fellow members and enthusiasts.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT
CHRIS LEITH Motorcycle Section
The lead-up to Christmas, and all of those fun things to do – where will we find the time? PAST EVENTS
11th November – Noggin. A very successful event, about 26 turned up which was manageable… 22nd November – Homestead Run. We made a bit of a song and dance about how motorcycle friendly this event was going to be, unfortunately for the lone motorcyclist the weather REFUSED to cooperate – but the rest of us cocooned in our cars we were fine… 28th November – Fish & Chip run. This will be reported next month as it is being run after the Hub deadline. FUTURE EVENTS
3rd December – Main VCC Noggin. Will feature a display of motorcycles from the section members, Philip Jeeves will be shoulder tapping. 9th December – Christmas Noggin in the Barn, Cutler Park. This will kick off about 6.00 pm for a 7.00 pm meal. The meal is being catered by the club caterers, $20 a head. PLEASE let Phil Jeeves know you are coming, we need numbers for the caterers. Phil is at 03 338 0666, cell is 022 025 9924, and email is philipjeeves21@gmail.com. Got any dietary issues? Please also advise Philip in advance! There is no Fish & Chip Run in December. 26th December – Boxing Day Picnic Run. Motorcycles are very welcome, see elsewhere for destination and other details. 1st January – Picnic Run to Little River. The Banks Peninsula Branch runs this event, is a very popular relaxing day picnicking in the sun or in the shade of the trees, listening to the Chch Big Band playing. Again, motorcyclists most welcome (even those who drive their cars.) Turn up when you like, go home when you like, from about 10.30 am onwards. 2nd January 2021 – Motorcycle New Year Run. Starts at Cutler Park, 10.00 am meet-up. Riders will decide on the day the destination. 26
No Motorcycle Noggin in January. 23rd January – Fish & Chip Run. As usual, meet at the BP, Moorhouse & Antigua St, 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. 10th February 2021 – Motorcycle Noggin. At Motorcycle Corner, Cutler Park, 7.30 pm. 14th February 2021 – Moped Run. Starts PMH Hospital, 10.30 am, so meet about 10.15 am. Will be a little hill work, and Kurt Ebrecht is the organiser. He is on 021 0433707, and email is kurt.ebrecht@gmail.com. 20th February 2021 – Motorcycle Annual Rally. See elsewhere for full details, entry form, etc. One thing to mention, there are LOTS of trophies available to be won. While not everyone are pot-hunters it is nice to be recognised for a good performance on this the premier motorcycling event of the calendar. 27th February 2021 – Fish & Chip Run. Nothing planned at this point, so meet as usual at BP, Moorhouse & Antigua St, 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. If we do think of something well worthwhile we will let the motorcyclist know via the email mail-out. 5th – 7th March – Jim Toohey Rally. This will be an over-night event. As the National Motorcycle Rally is the next week the Jim Toohey will be kept quite local. We are looking to go to the Pleasant Point Hotel, just reopened after a spell being closed. More information in the February 2021 Hub. That is about it for this time, please note the full list of events as there is no Hub put out in January 2021. Thanks very much to the members of the Motorcycle Section for their support of the events placed in 2020, a shit of a year; but 2021 just has to be better all round.

Canterbury Branch Awards Dinner
Report by GAY GOODMAN
Due to Covid 19, the Awards dinner that was supposed to be held in September was rescheduled to be held on Sunday 1st November 2020. How great it was to see our clubrooms filled with people enjoying themselves at a lovely dinner. The tables were set up very nice with candles and flowers on the tables of the recipients. Before the dinner the recipients and their partners are hosted with drinks and nibbles in a closed off portion of the hall. Then everyone stands as these special people come and get seated for the meal. Ross Butler (Canterbury Branch Chairman) welcomed everyone and introduced the South Island Club Captain Alon Mayhew and his wife Tracy as Alon was representing the National President and giving out the awards. Before we had the main course, the 6 people getting 25-year badges and 2 people getting their 35-year badges received theirs, then after the main meal and before the desserts, the ten 50-year recipients received their badges and certificates. After the dessert there were 4 men receiving 60year badges. A total of 960 years these wonderful members have been involved and maintained their membership with our great club. Lots of stories and memories were shared of early days involving the development of Cutler Park and other stories. Many years of Committee involvement in years gone by have to be appreciated by these long-time members, because if it wasn’t for their enthusiasm, decisions and forethought of the future, the Canterbury Branch wouldn’t have the wonderful facilities they have today. People that need to be thanked for making this night extra special were: Annette and Lindsay Painter and their team who did the catering of a great meal. Esme Humm for doing the beautiful flowers on the tables and for each recipient an orchid spray. Mark Drury and Greg Lamb for being Wine Waiters. Alon and Tracy Mayhew for attending and presenting the awards. Tony Craythorne for taking photographs and, a huge thanks to Leigh Craythorne who is so passionate and does a great job of arranging these Awards and the evening. Without her input this event just wouldn’t happen. 28
