CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Welcome to our 2020 events programme. December saw some well supported and enjoyable events as well as various section end of year functions. I want to thank the swap meet, parts shed and motorcycle sections for their kind invitations to take part in their celebrations. It was very enjoyable and always a pleasure to mix with the supporters of these important sections. The Children’s Christmas picnic in December was a great success with lots of entertainment for both the children and parents/grandparents. We were nervous about the change of venue, given the opposition by some older members who usually attend with their grandchildren. We had a good turnout of club vehicles which attracted a lot of attention from the general public who attended the festival. I appreciated the supportive comments from a number of our members attending. There are some organisational issues to sort out with the Kaiapoi Festival team for this year’s event but overall it was a great success thanks to Amanda, Wayne and Liz Paris, Graeme Sword, Dave Inwood, Rod Thrower and Gill Stevenson and of course our own excellent SANTA. Gill drove the club truck and gave rides to many children including my delighted eight month old granddaughter. Please remember that this event is put on for the children, and not designed to be a picnic for grandparents. Our treasurer will be pleased that the event also saved us hundreds of dollars on previous year’s picnics. Given that most of our events in 2019, including the quiz night and the AGM,

suffered between 20 and 50 percent drop in support from JOHN COOMBER the previous year, Chairman I was expecting a pretty low turnout for the boxing day picnic and the picnic run on 5 January. Dave Inwood and I were amazed at the number of vehicles turning up for both events, and glad we had organised plenty of coffee and biscuits for the starting venues. I had wondered whether the two should be combined in future to bolster the numbers, but you have all showed that there is good support for both. Thanks to Dave and Linda for hosting the January event and thanks to you all for your support of these two picnics. Sunday 26 January was the Veteran picnic run by Tim Palmer and it turned out to be a typical hot dry Canterbury day for the event. The picnic spot was the newly upgraded Tai Tapu Domain and the veterans were joined by the Wolseley Club and also the Model A club who were holding a Posh Picnic. Plenty of shade helped make a very enjoyable day. We need to share more of these events with kindred clubs. This month we start with the Commercial Rally and on 29th/1st March our Branch Annual Rally. Get your entries in early for these two events. Entry forms are in the December Hub. Also note the entry form for the rear wheel brake rally in early March. Entries close early February. Contact Graeme Sword. On Sunday 16 February we will run the first of our “Old PAGE 7

Cars and Coffee” mornings from 8am to 11am at Cutler Park. This will coincide with the Parts Shed being open. We want to encourage new members especially to join us and bring their pride and joy, but also as many members as possible as this is a new initiative by Colin Hey along the lines of the very successful meetings many North Island branches organise. Rod and I want to use this monthly event to welcome new members who often feel lost when turning up for the first time at noggins. Please support this. We will have barista coffee for the purists, as well as tea and instant coffee and you can let us know how much you want us to cater for you on these Sunday morning meetings. Format is informal. A chance to see and display vehicles and enjoy the company. Thanks to the younger member who emailed me last year to suggest this is the type of event he would like to attend, rather than weekend long rallies which clash with other commitments.

A special thanks to all the members who brought their vehicles out to assist with the Grandparent’s and Children’s day at the Diana Isaac Retirement village on 23 January. The rides around the village were very popular. Thanks also to those who turned up at the wrong venue due to a miscommunication. I hope this does not put you off helping out again in future. Looking forward to an exciting and rewarding 2020 season. Happy motoring. John Coomber

SECRETARY’S REPORT Happy New Year to all, and I hope you have had a good break with family and friends these last two months. I will be away during the first three weeks of February so won’t be at Feb Noggin but will be able to access my emails if you require forms etc. Some are available at the magazine rack in the foyer or on the notice board. I will be attending The National Executive Meeting in Wellington on 28 March as your branch delegate, if there are any matters you would like raised at this meeting please let me know before or speak to me at the March Noggin. This is the six monthly meeting between the National AGMs. Remember I am usually available up by the stage at most noggins if you require forms or have any issues you wish to raise with your committee. (Don’t be surprised if I ask you to put it in writing) At 6 January we had 42 unfinancial members, so if you are one of these and don’t receive your Hub you won’t be reading this and you won’t know why! If you receive it by email I will wake up to this in March and remove you from the emailing list. Subscriptions were due end of Oct 2019 and invoices were sent out end Sept with a reminder in Nov so these are now two and half months over due so you would have noticed you did not receive your Dec/ Jan Beaded Wheels. Subscriptions not paid at the time of the National Half year Exc Meeting 28 March will be removed from the database and will have to reapply for membership (losing any continuity of membership).

Are your details up to date?

ROD THROWER Secretary

Please advise national office (admin@vcc.org.nz) or myself of any addresses, phone numbers and changed email addresses that are no longer active.

Thank you for the support given to Dave and John for a very successful Boxing day Run to Kirwee Domain. Fifty to sixty cars turned out for a very relaxing afternoon . Congratulations also to those involved in the Picnic Run in January, this was a wonderful way to start of the New Year. Thankyou to the seven people who offered their help at the Lady Issac Retirement Village, very succesful day, although driving around the village for two hours was hard work. And my apologies to those who went to the wrong venue, I will be more thorough next time, and try and sort out a better route.

CONDOLENCES Our deepest sympathies are extended to the families of those members and friends of the branch who have recently passed away. Ann Hastilow Mike Lawson PAGE 9

LETTERS SWAP MEET I read Colin Ray’s letter with interest although I have never have had a site and cannot comment on that, I was however disappointed to arrive at the gates of the swap meet on Saturday morning to put my Morris on display to be informed it would cost me $5.

A few years ago there had been some discussion on this with a decision made those members who have cars on display to have free entry. For next year I will be better to not clean the old car, leave it home, take out the modern and pay the $5. Much easier.

On Sunday I was on duty patrolling the cars so had free admission which was fine.

9-90’s REPORT 2019 Christmas Lunch Pineacres Restaurant was the venue for a superb Christmas lunch event, this was by far the best we have ever had. We have already booked for Christmas 2020. The food and the atmosphere was great, the banter was good and this was a very successful outing. Peter and Pam Yeatman celebrated their 48th Wedding Anniversary. We also had 13 Christmas raffle winners going home with a little extra cash in their pockets. The proceeds from the raffle mean everyone went home with a bag of goodies.

Electric Vehicles Old & New This was a display with a difference, with activities both inside and outside the hall. Outside there were three modern, either hybrid or fully electric cars available for members to test drive. Thank you to Neville Digby and the drivers from Orion for organizing this, as many members took advantage of the offer and enjoyed their electric car test drive. Thank you to the following for displaying their electric vehicles:

Clip-On Run

Sunday 23 February 2020, 10:00 am Start The Clip-On Run is aimed at club eligible bicycles (30yr rule) with small (under 50cc) motors attached generally to the rear wheel

50 electric vehicles taken in 1924 from the roof of the Carlton Hotel in Bealey Avenue showing how popular electric vehicles were then.

This year’s clip-on run will start in Brooker Avenue near the corner of New Brighton Road and Brooker Avenue in the Burwood ‘red zone’. Brooker Avenue starts from New Brighton Road and is one street westward from ANZAC Drive or three streets eastward from Bassett Street. If you are guided by ‘google maps’ the address to search for is 391 New Brighton Road. (There is no longer a house there though!) There is plenty of parking in Brooker Avenue for cars and trailers. We will ride for about 15 km to a very pleasant café where the staff will be expecting us. There will then be a ride of about 4 km back to the start. We hope to see as many as possible present. Please note: DRESS TO BE SEEN. Enquiries to: Alister McKenzie Doug Watkinson

03 355 4017 03 383 1817 or 027 727 4466

If you would like to read more on this, there is an interesting article in Beaded Wheels issue 102 October 1976 pages 20-24 entitled, “1920s Heyday of Electric Power”.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT Wishing all the motorcyclists a Happy New Year, and hoping it will bring prosperity and good cheer! PAST EVENTS

30th November, Fish & Chip Run. A good turnout of about 15 bikes enjoyed the run out to Leeston to view the contents of a shed of “motoring memorabilia”. Also viewing were the members of a Hot Rod club – don’t think they could believe their eyes either. Thanks to Gary Arps for organising.

11th December – Motorcycle Xmas Noggin. About 55 members and partners enjoyed a Christmas Noggin that was extremely well catered by the Club caterers. Many thanks to the caterers, the meal was very well received.

2nd January 2020, New Year Run. Treated a bit like a F&C run, the assembled group of 10 riders decided on a run to the golf club at Hororata where a brand new café was operating. Mike Glenday’s bike suffered an internal haemorrhage on the way; one piston had the crown lift completely away from the skirt. Hopefully, the bike will be going again very soon…

25th January, Fish & Chip Run. A dozen motorcycles and two cars fronted up to the start at the BP, Cnr Moorhouse & Antigua Sts. Nice day, supposed to get to 33 degrees, so we opted for a run around the gorges with lunch at the Diner in Oxford. All done out like a 1960s American diner, was very good!

FUTURE EVENTS

12th February – Noggin Night. Decided for something different and go to the Tai Tapu Pub, on the Old Tai Tapu Road, 7.30 pm as usual. This is a good motorcycle friendly pub, and hopefully it will be a nice summer’s evening. 23rd February 2020, Clip-on Run. In the past this has been a “Clip-on and Moped Run.” Due to popular demand it has been decided to SPLIT the two “parts” into two separate events. The Clip-on Run will be 23rd February and the Moped Run will be on Saturday 14 March. Specifically the Clip-on Run is for bicycles with small (under 50cc) motors attached generally to the rear wheel, of the type popular up until the 1950s or 1960s. Modern BMX bikes etc. fitted with cheap Chinese motors that have been recently obtainable are specifically banned; bring these along and you will not be welcomed at all. They need to comply with the 30 year rule for club eligibility. This year the Clip-on Run will leave from Brooker Ave, near New Brighton Road at 10.00 am. The organisers are Alister McKenzie (ph 03 3550417 and Doug Watkinson (ph 03 383 1817 or cell 027 727 4466. See pg 19 for more info.

29th February – Fish & Chip Run. Start from the BP Petrol Station on corner of Moorhouse Ave and Antigua Street; meet 10.15am for a 10.30am departure. We plan to meet up with those on the VCC Annual Rally at their lunch break place. However, it would be great if you think about supporting the club by entering the Annual Rally on your motorcycle; see next page.

29th February – Branch Annual Rally. Motorcycles can enter this event as well! In fact, there are trophies on offer for motorcyclists, which I have to say, are not very often won…. If you like the idea of having your name engraved on cups or trophies then this might be an opportunity…

11th March – Noggin Night. This will be at the Social Corner, VCC’s Cutler Park, with a 7.30 pm kick-off.

20th – 22th March 2020, Jim Toohey Rally. - Please note there is a change of date - the run will be going to the West Coast in 2020 and we will be taking part in The Scenicland Rally in Greymouth. A motorcycle friendly route is being organised. The dates are Friday 20th & Saturday 21st March. We will be riding over Friday afternoon 20th and back Sunday 22nd. Hotel accommodation is being booked so a commitment required now if you are intending on going. Advise Mike Glenday if you intend going please, phone 021 192 0581 or mike.heatherg@xtra.co.nz If you make a late decision then we will still find you accommodation but not with the main group who will possibly be at the Recreation Hotel. This run is normally a one night overnighter, but this time it will be two nights away. See elsewhere for more detailed information and entry form.

JOIN US AT THE TAI TAPU HOTEL (It just happens to be their pint ‘n pizza night) We’re hoping for a great summer evening – see you there.

28th March – Fish & Chip Run. Start from the BP Petrol Station on Moorhouse Ave, corner with Antigua Street; meet 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. We haven’t got a destination in mind however look out for the March Hub for a scintillating place to visit… That is about it for this month, enjoy the summer riding months and remember, keep the rubber to the road!

MICK & ROSE MARINER Rally Report

CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS PICNIC As most of you know we were approached by Kaiapoi Parade organisers to see if we would like to provide a Vintage display and join their festivities for free for the day. There was much discussion (and opposition) towards changing this event, and I would like to say that I was also apprehensive as to how this would work for us. Numbers were well down, but many new faces joined the day which was lovely. The day unfolded as overcast and rain loomed in the background. The activities available to us were amazing, every type of bouncy castle climbing activity (my favourite was the whack a mole with children as the moles - very satisfying!), a self-propelled water boat activity, face painting, an incredible steam punk hands on biking - have a go style (this was popular with young and old), emergency services vehicles displays as well as our club truck giving rides to VCC kids only after Santa visited. Add to this the stalls to browse with local clubs, crafts and plenty of variety of gift stalls just ripe for a bit of pre-Christmas shopping PLUS a great area of food trucks PAGE 18

with local and international cuisine. This was alongside a stage where entertainment was the brass band, local dance troupes both young and old, bagpipes display with a truly lovely carol theme alongside traditional music. By the time 11.30am came around there was a bit of light rain which quickly cleared, we had our Santa set to go giving out his gifts to all those that made the cut. Once this was done we lunched and made a very short walk to the parade route to wait for the procession to begin. Afterwards it was an easy pack up to head home. The best part of my day was the open positive comments we received from club members who supported the day, with very happy grandchildren/ children at their sides, this was more than the usual few we do get, and to be honest was a relief. Change is not always accepted well! Now we have experienced the day we know what improvements we need to make, and hope to have a much bigger display for the public next year. Hear’s to a positive 2020. Amanda Franklin

JANUARY PICNIC Rally

MICK & ROSE MARINER Rally Report

5 JANUARY 2020

We would like to thank our Assistant Club Captain, Dave Inwood, for this very enjoyable day out. An excellent number of cars turned out and at about 10.45 all headed out to Hawarden for our picnic lunch. In true Canterbury style it was a wee bit windy but we managed to find a nice sheltered spot.

roads to the farm were amazing. Entrants were taken right into the back country on narrow winding unmade roads with beautiful views. We were made very welcome and got to look at owner Laurie O’Carroll’s many handsome horses which he uses for horse trekking for overseas visitors.

After lunch we made our way to Waitohi Downs, Hawarden, North Canterbury. The

Many thanks to Dave and Linda for a organising a lovely day.

ROYCE VOG 1

(VOG’s) December run

The VOG’s had a great run on Tuesday 10 December organised by John and Junette McIntyre (VOG 13) starting from their home in Rangiora on a magic day with only a slight hint of nor’easterly wind. Sixteen riders turned up plus Denise McKenzie our dependable backup and Jenny Thomson. Our first port of call was over the road to a neighbour who has a single garage specifically to house his hobby of “O” gauge model trains. Not only does the man make the layout and scenery but he also builds the loco’s and rolling stock. He was an engineer in his working life so those skills are really coming to the fore with this hobby. On to our steads and we headed out on the roads around the Belmont subdivision in Western Rangiora and beyond. This was not without some delays. John being a speedy VOG’er on his well prepared machine set off without checking on the tailend Charlies who hadn’t even mounted their bikes let alone coaxed them into life. Now believe me this causes some problems as anyone who has done a “follow the leader” type of run will know. By the time we were about 3k from the start VOG 1 suggested to John that he should stop and regroup as there appeared to be very few riders following us so we did and we waited and we waited and we waited – it was some 15 mins before the rest of the bunch caught up. Turns out Brian Newberry was having a few problems which took a while to sort. Eventually we were on our way again heading towards the Paschendale PAGE 22

cycle and walking track that goes from Rangiora to Kaiapoi following along the route of Lineside Rd with a few detours along the way. This was where the lads were able to wind the throttle on and reach breakneck speeds of 30kmh and beyond – wow is that exhilarating. Noel Niven even admitted to me that he actually “broke the speed limit” at one point where there was some roadworks happening with a 30km/h speed limit he confessed that he was doing 32km/h this automatically put him into contention as the actual winner of our Hard Luck Trophy for the month. (Noel you shouldn’t let out these secrets). We eventually made it all the way through to the booming metropolis of Kaiapoi after a few more stops along the way to let the stragglers catch up. Dave Backhouse, whose Solex always runs like a dream, had issues but nothing he couldn’t fix. In Kaiapoi we viewed the magnificent recently restored River Boat Queen paddle steamer, a testament to all involved in the restoration. We returned to McIntyre’s for an

abundant barbeque in sunshine. A big thanks to John and Junette for opening up your home for us and your hospitality on the day. A great end to another great year of “VOGGING”. January 2020 Adventure January 14 saw 13 riders turn up at the start on a brilliant morning at the start point the North Beach Surf Club. This run was named The “Lyall Hurst Memorial Run” in remembrance of Lyall (VOG 3) who passed away March 2019. The start was not without some dramas, most of us were able to set off in fine style and it was not until we were about 3k into our journey that VOG 1 realised that some of our riders were missing. I backtracked to the start to find Barry Walker and Brian Newberry both in strife with mechanical issues. Fortunately our team mechanic Dave Backhouse was on the case (where would we be without you Dave) it was just a matter of a change of plug and clean out the main jets on both bikes and we were all off with a hiss and a roar. The journey today took us through North Shore, Queenspark, Burwood, Prestons Ouruhia and Belfast. Taking in a mixture of quiet suburban streets and nerve wracking busy roads, I’m sure the traffic is getting faster, well that’s what it seems from the cockpit of the ‘Solex when up the front of the pack. The route that I had planned three weeks ago along Marshlands Rd had a slight hiccup at Lower Styx Rd – yikes there was a detour “where am I going to go”? Fortunately all was sign posted well and a crisis averted. It was then just plain sailing to our lunch at Armadillo’s Belfast where Lyall’s wife Kay joined us as a special guest. We hoped for a trouble free return trip as as Alister & Denise McKenzie our faithful backup were leaving us at this point. But oh no trouble came to life again with both Barry

Santa traded Rudolph for a Solex this year at the NZ Motor Caravan Association Christmas function.

and Brian having further “go” problems so it was Dave once again to the fore to get their incorrigible little beasts firing into life. Finally it was on the road again and homeward bound, the journey went quite smoothly until yours truly suffered a nail through my tyre. Fortunately thanks to great team work Alastair Wright completed the ride and picked up his vehicle and trailer and came back and rescued me, thanks Alastair. Just on closing an interesting piece of trivia supplied by VCC member George Calder – did you realise that the Velosolex mobilette was the brainchild of Marcel Mennesson the man who was responsible for developing the Solex Carburettor. I always knew we had fine breeding. Brian Newberry just had to be awarded the Lyall Hurst Hardluck Trophy he hasn’t won it yet so it was time that it graced his mantelpiece.

This is the third year that this event will be held and once again we are very fortunate to have a partner in Dutton Garage (est 1911). The featured vehicles, as before, are those built during the war years and a Duttons medal will be presented to vehicles 100 years old and over. (VIC is required). All club eligible vehicles are welcome with those produced after 1945 participating in a support category. A commemorative number plate, also supplied by Duttons, will be given to all participants and the Malvern News will be including an entry list of pre-1945 vehicles along with the route for the information of Malvern residents.

Optional lunch is being supplied at the new Willows Cafe at the Hororata Golf Club (Glentunnel), where the vehicles will again be on display for the residents to come and view. Three choices of meals will be offered so please indicate in the space provided on the entry form what meal/meals you have chosen. Entries will close on the 31st March and no late entries can be accepted.
