CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The February noggin was very special with a display of Authentic Reproduction and Representation vehicles. Thanks to Clynt Inns, Darren O’Neil and Chris Parker for displaying their 1932 Alpha Romeo, 1952 C Type Jaguar, 1959 Ferrari and 1990 Acorn/ Bugatti type 37. The Alpha and Ferrari are good examples of the high standard of work done at Auto Restorations in Christchurch. February saw the first of Colin Hey’s Coffee and Old Cars gatherings on Sunday 16. This was a great success with over sixty vehicles arriving at our grounds and a lot of interesting conversations and admiring looks. We were very pleased to see a number of early veteran cars attending, and I am aware that some members of the public and tourists also turned up for a look at the vehicles. Thanks to you all for your support of this new venture. I hope we get a good attendance at the next one on Sunday 15 March. It was good to meet some of the new members, and I hope you all enjoyed the day. As I write this, we are approaching the annual branch rally, and I am sure that it will be a memorable event thanks to Katrina and her team. This month we have the rear wheel brake run on Sunday 8 and the Jim Toohey run to the West Coast 20 – 22 to co-incide with the Scenicland Rally. Sunday 15 is our second Old Cars and Coffee morning. The Back Country run had to be abandoned because the venue was not available and the extreme fire risk at present. The P. Group rally will be held on 6 April with entries closing on 31 March. The Autumn 3 day run will start at Darfield on 25 PAGE 6
April to co-incide with the Anzac Day rally.
JOHN COOMBER
We are looking for Chairman some cars on the morning or 1 April for a school in Rangiora – same as last November. (No – it is not an April Fool’s joke.) Let Rod or me know if you are available please. Rod will be attending the March Executive meeting in Wellington this month. Please advise him of any matters of importance to you. Happy motoring, John Coomber

SECRETARY’S REPORT Holiday was so great, plenty of fish, so I decided to stay away, (just joking).
The sign of a good holiday!
Good reports have come back to me on the Cars, Motorcycles & Coffee Morning, sorry I missed this first time event, hopefully I will make it next month. National AGM As you have probably have already heard Canterbury Branch have applied and been selected to run the Club National Annual General Meeting and Executive Meeting in August 2021 My job now is to put together a planning team of four or five willing members to make this happen. It will be my job if re-elected this year to take to the 2020 August Conference Executive a presentation which would need to include things like: Venue Catering Accomodation options Transport Connections as well as attractions of the area, Christchurch. …and our enthusiasm for running this event.
Don’t fear the unknown as the Branch Manual contains a ten page guidelines for hosting this event to guide the team though.
ROD THROWER Secretary ph 03 338 2320
I know deep down in the foundations of this Branch of 1300 members there is a group of willing members who would just love to step up and stamp their mark on this promotion of our fellowship and camaraderie in Canterbury. We as a newly built city have lot to show off. So come on “long-time member” or “new member” give me a call so I can put you in the larger picture.
CONDOLENCES Our deepest sympathies are extended to the families of those members and friends of the branch who have recently passed away. Susan Townshend PAGE 7
LETTERS LOOKING FOR A 1913 EMPIRE I am contacting you on behalf of the National Motor Museum, Birdwood, South Australia, convenors of the Bay-To-Birdwood old car run. You may be aware of the event which has been a biennial run since 1980, and has been recognised as one of the premier events since then. It attracts up to 1800 entries. The centre piece of the event is a Concours d’Elegance. An attraction planned for the 2020 run is to feature a gathering of as many of the previous winners of the Concours as possible. One of the outstanding winners was a 1913 Empire run-a-bout owned and restored by the late Donald Cuppleditch. This car was the only vehicle so far to have won the Bayto-Birdwood Concours on two occasions. Prior to Donald’s passing the car was sold and went to an enthusiast in Hamilton, New Zealand, but we have no further details. We believe the car is now resident in Christchurch, and could possibly belong to a member of your club. We would like to issue
The Empire taken in 1984, the year of its first win.
an invitation for the car to be displayed if that were at all possible. We would like to, at the least, have its current owner and whereabouts recorded and added to the museum’s data base for history’s sake. With this in mind, we are asking if you are aware of this vehicle and if you are, would it be possible, with the owner’s permission of course, to supply us with that information. Or alternatively if you know the owner, request him/her to contact me if they wish. Kevin Field kevinfield2@bigpond.com

CUTLER PARK GROUND MAINTENANCE CREW Cutler Park is a huge asset to our club but our grounds and buildings are substantial and require serious maintenance and on‑going ground and gardening works. We would love any members to join our ground maintenance crew on either a casual or permanent basis. Ground Maintenance days is the first Sunday of the Month and we work from 8am until noon. We have plenty of tools on-site but encourage members to bring any power tools that might help eg weedeaters, brush cutters etc. Joining us for a morning is a great way to meet club members and help out your club. Call me if you want more information or would like to register your interest in joining us or just show up on the day. Mike Foster 03 359 8260

NOGGIN Superb February Display Our February Noggin Display was, “Authentic Reproduction & Representation Vehicles”. Authentic Reproduction Vehicles, (ARV), is an official VCC category with the definition: Motor Vehicles newly constructed to the exact specification of an original factory production model that comply with the VCC Code for Period Specials. (these are extremely hard to pick from an original vehicle)
Darren O’Neil 1959 Ferrari Testa Rossa (representation)
Representation Vehicles, (a new word to myself) are not replicas as they use modern components. We were very privileged to have these magnificent vehicles on display. I have never seen so many people taking photos of the display cars. Some members made a special effort, to come to the Noggin to view them. The workmanship is a credit to the tradesman who constructed them. Thank you to the following owners, for displaying vehicles and making a great display. Clynt Inns 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Zagato (ARV). 9-90’s REPORT Well, we have had our first outing for the year. What a cracker! A lovely day, a very interesting route to the venue and the destination a dream: a garden for the ladies and a garage full of vintage cars, pre 1920 American cars, many of them never seen in New Zealand. A Sizaire Naudin, one of two left in the world. A Minerva, the size of a Sherman tank. A few of the names I remember: Moon, Kutz, Detroiter, Pierce Arrow, Edzel, Davis. The mind boggles. And then there was the workshop any mechanic would be proud of! Last, but not least, the Garden. Many of the ladies admired the beauty of it. 16 acres, a bit much for me! Thank you Kelvin, for sharing all this with us and thank you also to Grant Lomax and Graeme Sword for organising the outing for us. Between 40 and 50 cars took part. The sun shone as we had lunch in part of the garden.

OLD RACE CAR register started
The recent display and demonstration of Old Race Cars at this years’ Skope Race meeting in February at Ruapuna was a big success. Both the Canterbury Car Club and the Skope Committee have already indicated that they wish it to be repeated at next years’ event – bigger and better. We already have another three interesting cars lined-up. To help us with this project, the VCCNZ Banks Peninsula Branch wish to compile a free register of all such vehicles, whatever their state of repair, restoration or condition. We want to ensure that these ‘Old Race Cars’ are never lost or lose their identity. This documented information may also help owners to obtain history, knowledge and even valuable parts required to enable these race-cars to once more be active.

It was very apparent from many enthusiasts and spectators at Februarys’ event that these old race cars create huge interest and are a vital part of the old car movement which needs to be resurrected and encouraged. So if you missed this years’ display, have such a car or know of someone who has, please drop an email with the details to either of the contacts below and we will be pleased to include on the register. VINTAGE REPORT It’s great to see our old cars stretching their legs and enjoying the weather we have been having over this Summer rally season. By the time this goes to print, the Branch Annual Rally would have been held and hopefully well supported by all sections. With the news that Holden will cease as a brand in 2021, I thought to look at this company’s early history (1856-1931) as it has had a major influence in the production of cars in our vintage section across several brands. THE HOLDEN STORY In 1852, James Alexander Holden emigrated to South Australia from Walsall, England, and in 1856 established J.A. Holden & Co., a saddlery business in Adelaide. In 1879 J A Holden’s eldest son Henry James (HJ) Holden, became a partner and effectively managed the company. In 1885, Germanborn H. A. Frost joined the business as a junior partner and J.A. Holden & Co became Holden & Frost Ltd. Edward Holden, James’ grandson, joined the firm in 1905 with an interest in automobiles. From there, the firm evolved through various partnerships, and in 1908, Holden & Frost moved into the business of minor repairs to car upholstery. The company began to re-body older chassis using motor bodies produced by F T Hack and Co from 1914. Holden & Frost mounted the body and painted and trimmed it. The company began to produce complete motorcycle sidecar bodies after 1913. Wartime trade restrictions led the company to start full-scale production of vehicle body shells. H.J. Holden founded a new company in late 1917, and registered Holden’s Motor Body Builders Ltd (HMBB) PAGE 14
MIKE MILNE Vintage Convenor on 25 February 1919, specialising in car bodies and using the former F T Hack & Co facility. By 1923, HMBB were producing 12,000 units per year. During this time, HMBB assembled bodies for Ford Motor Company of Australia until its Geelong plant was completed. From 1924, HMBB became the exclusive supplier of car bodies for GM in Australia, with manufacturing taking place at the new Woodville plant. These bodies were made to suit a number of chassis imported from manufacturers including Austin, Buick, Chevrolet, Cleveland, Dodge, Essex, Fiat, Hudson, Oakland, Oldsmobile, Overland, Reo, Studebaker, and WillysKnight. In 1926, General Motors (Australia) Limited was established using bodies produced by HMBB and imported complete knock down chassis. In 1930 alone, the still independent Woodville plant built bodies for Austin, Chrysler, DeSoto, Morris, Hillman, Humber, Hupmobile, and Willys-Overland, as well GM cars. The Great Depression led to a substantial downturn in production by Holden, from 34,000 units annually in 1930 to just 1,651 units one year later. In 1931, GM purchased HMBB and merged it with General Motors (Australia) Pty Ltd to form General Motors-Holden’s Ltd (GM-H). Throughout the 1920s, Holden also supplied tramcars to the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board, of which several examples have been preserved in both Australia and New Zealand. MOTORCYCLE REPORT First up this month, a sad duty. Motorcycle Committee member Barry Townshend’s wife Susan passed away on the 20th February. Barry and Susan have jointly served for many years on the motorcycle committee, especially in the treasurer and secretary roles. Of latter times Susan greeted club members arriving for the monthly main VCC Noggin by selling meat raffle tickets on behalf of the Motorcycle Section. Sympathies and condolences from the Motorcycle Section to Barry and the wider family. PAST EVENTS

The dates are Friday 20th & Saturday 21st March. We will be riding over Friday afternoon 20th and back Sunday 22nd. Hotel accommodation is being booked at the Recreation Hotel, Greymouth, or at the Acheron Motel, which is very close by. Mike is away until 7 March so you can contact Chris Leith, 021 217 7140 or leithcm@gmail.com for a (very) late entry. This run is normally a one night overnighter, but this time it will be two nights away. See last month’s Hub for more information.
23rd February 2020, Clip-on Run. Absolutely brilliant conditions greeted the entries to this intrepid event of commitment and determination. While the actual entry, at seven, was a little down on what was expected, the enjoyment of the day was in no way diminished. At about the ¾ mark (around the course) a stop at the Waimairi Beach Golf Club café was called for, and by this time the entrants and their supporters had swelled to 14 or more. The conversation must have been quite riveting, as some remained for over 1½ hours! From there it was a quick run back to the start in New Brighton Road, then home. In the eyes of the organisers the event was a huge success, in fact they have already got a route organised for next year! Many thanks to Alister and Doug for organising! PAGE 16
28th March – Fish & Chip Run. Start from
FINAL THOUGHTS
the BP Petrol Station on Moorhouse Ave, corner with Antigua Street; meet 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. Have got the possibility of a couple of garage raids available, so turn up to see which one we will be having a look at.
I think that is about it for this month, while it is still warm and fine get those bikes out and enjoy the miles of events being planned on your behalf! Keep the rubber to the road and treat each ride as an opportunity to learn!
5th April – P Group Rally. While normally promoted as a car event, it is actually one for any “Post” group of vehicle, whether they are cars or motorcycles. From Post Vintage (from 1932) to Post 1980, all vehicles in this band are welcome. This year the route is being organised as “motorcycle friendly” to encourage riders to take part. Start is 9am for field tests, then at 10am coffee then depart. There is an option to enter into concours, as well as two rally tours, one of 120 km, and one of 160 km (including some gravel). Entries close 31 March, but if you want a rally plaque then enter by 15 March, please. Entries online, or in last month’s Hub.
8th April – Noggin Night. At the Barn, Macleans Island. Club member David Ready (who is visiting from Australia) has motorcycled all over the world, so he is speaking on his travels, tours, and anecdotes…. Should be VERY interesting! As usual, 7.30 pm start.
25th April – Fish & Chip Run. A run is being organised to Darfield to join the Dutton Garage (est. 1911) Malvern ANZAC Day Run in the morning sometime. Because of this we may need to start a little earlier, so we will meet at the BP Station, cnr Moorhouse Ave and Antigua St, 9.45 am for a 10am departure. Full details next month.

COFFEE MORNING A HIT Inaugural OCBC
Some of the 60 cars present on the day
16 FEBRUARY 2020
OLD CARS BIKES & COFFEE The first Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee (OCBC) event on Sunday 16th February went very well indeed, with 60 cars and three motorcycles turning up at Cutler Park. It was really pleasing to see five veterans amongst them, including Bruce and Shirley Shadbolt’s newly restored L’Etoile, and Ian Close and his wife with their 1903 Oldsmobile. Both cars were trailered there – Shirley got her first drive in the L’Etoile

around the grounds, as did Ian (his very first drive!) in the Oldsmobile. Bruce has overseen the restoration of the Oldsmobile, and was there to give Ian some moral support and guidance on the finer points of the car – it was great to see Ian driving it around the grounds with more and more confidence. The day didn’t get off to a good start for Brian Newberry in his 1912 Little however – he suffered a nasty blowout just down the road from the clubrooms that left the inner tube firmly tangled around the inside of the front hub. Several members came to his rescue though, and Joseph McClintock made short work of changing the tyre and getting him back on the road. A huge variety of cars turned up, including a few club-eligible Japanese cars, and even a number of Fords which left around 9.30 to head to the All Ford Day at Wigram. The coffee van did well, and lots of socialising and mutual ‘vehicle admiration’ was going on. Most stayed on until about 11am – some stayed for a picnic lunch in the motorcycle
shelter, most went home to get on with other things, and some (like Jenny and I) departed with friends to have a pub lunch. It was agreed that 8am was a little too early for a start on a Sunday morning, so the gates will be open at 8.30am on Sunday 15th March for the next one. Remember you can arrive any time after that, and they will always be held on the 3rd Sunday of every month.

Isn’t modern technology amazing, here I am sitting in my caravan at Marchwood Park Motueka reporting to you about the latest VOG run held Tuesday 11 Feb and I didn’t even attend, what sort of a leader am I. Delegation is the name of the game and this time Grant Lomax stood in for me and arranged an amazing day with sunshine and heat and a great VOG run for all those that attended to enjoy. Instead of VOG 1 mounting a 49cc Velosolex on that day Jan and I were whipping over the hills to Kaiteriteri on our 350watt eBikes – unfortunately I must say they do have a lot more power than my poor wee Solex when it comes to hill work but both cycles bring a smile to ones face and that is what it is all about. Having fun. The VOG run this month took the team around Sumner with a start point from Ferrymead Historical Park’s lake where Grant Lomex, Jim Patterson and John Kuipers sail their radio controlled model yachts each week another great form of fun that I have only just recently found out that these guys take part in. Grant had organised a route along the newish cycleway that starts off from the Ferrymead Bridge and carries on right through to Sumner Village following the shoreline most of the way with some sections on the road a very nice journey on a good day fortunately for the team there was no Canterbury Nor’ Easter to hamper their journey across the causeway on that day, nobody got lost
ROYCE VOG 1 (in absentia)
this time – well I didn’t hear any reports of this so I assume that’s correct. After a circuitous route around many Sumner Village streets being mindful of stray dogs and pedestrians and wayward cyclists the guys headed back to the Valley Inn at Heathcote for a well deserved nosh up of wholesome food (read that as huge bowls of chips and wedges) to energise their toned bodies before heading back to the finish line. Being the gentleman that he is Grant had arranged our kindly backup Denise McKenzie to officiate in the awarding of the Hard Luck Trophy for this month to which she duly appointed Gary Thompson as the recipient. I don’t know what Gary had done but Grant was pleased he didn’t have to do this to his mate.

(SCENICLAND RALLY)
ENTRIES CLOSE 8 March 2020
ENTRY FORM This year we are riding to Greymouth to take part in The West Coast Branch’s Scenicland Rally. The run will leave late morning on Friday 20 March, via Arthurs Pass - stay two nights at the Recreational Hotel and return Sunday 22 March. Backup will be provided. Accommodation has been booked, thank you to the members who advised me after the December Hub came out to say they are going as we are paying a deposit soon. If members have not told me then please advise me asap, if
more want to attend than beds I have booked then they may be away from the main group in a motel/hotel. A motorcycle friendly run is being organized for riders and we will attend the evening rally event on the Saturday. I will organize the entry forms for The Scenicland Rally, once costs for that event are known and you will be contacted for payment. Further info regarding the start and time for the Friday will be in March Hub. Something a bit different than our usual run but will be worth it.
