On Sunday 11 April approximately 45 cars set off from Cutler Park on one of two different length routes for the Annual P Group rally. The weather played its part and we were now heading for Torlesse Wines in Waipara instead of the more traditional domain that was planned for the backup venue. Both routes went via Tuahiwi , Ashley and Broomfield. Roughly a third of entrants continued all the way to Greta Valley, through Scargill, Waikari and back to Waipara. The Scargill Valley and Weka Pass roads are my personal highlights from testing the route with their Autumn colours starting to show.
After finishing up at Cutler Park I had a moment of panic upon arriving at the end venue to find the place empty of vintage cars. My wife Sasha and friend Rebecca had been waiting unnecessarily to help park all the early arrivals. They were filling in time by chatting and sampling wine… to our relief about ten minutes later the first cars arrived.
I would like to thank all the drivers for cooperating with their parking instructions and forming neat lines around the outside of the venue. This left an area with large trees in the middle to provide the necessary shade for picnicking. The sun came out in the early afternoon and the shade was appreciated. When planning this event I lost sleep trying to work out how to fit everyone in luckily it all worked out in the end.
Maggie and Kim from Torlesse Winery donated a couple of bottles of wine for the prize giving and allowed us free use of their attractive grounds and facilities. A slow but steady number of members responsibly took advantage of the wine tastings and sales available, some by the glass in the sun while others loaded cases into cars.
After the event I received several compliments for the relaxed run and interesting end venue choice. Hopefully with the support of my team of helpers we will attempt to provide something similar next year for everyone to enjoy.
