Deadline for August Hub 29 July www.canterburybranchvintagecarclub.org.nz CLUB NIGHT FIRST THURSDAY OF EACH MONTH

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT As a result of moving down to level one, we are back in business and our normal activities can now resume. To celebrate this, we held a June noggin two weeks later than normal and without the JOHN COOMBER usual car display or library being Chairman open. Members were notified by ph 03 310 7056 email, and I was very pleased to see such a good turnout. As a reward, members enjoyed special bar prices on the night. Our monthly Coffee and Old Cars and Bikes morning commenced again on Sunday 21 June and we had a very good turnout. Everyone seemed to enjoy meeting up again. The Mid- winter motorcycle run is held over the weekend of 11/12 July. Our Annual General Meeting was postponed from the June date and will now be held on Saturday 25 July at 2pm in the main hall. Please note it is Saturday, not Sunday. For the third year we do not have a nomination for the position of Club Captain. Please give some thought to this important position. If you are prepared to give this a go, you will be supported by your committee, as well as an experienced group of members who have done this before, and are willing to assist you. Saturday 1 August is the Around the Bays Motorcycle Run; Sunday 16 Coffee Old Bikes and Cars morning, and Colin Hey is running a Daffodil Rally for the Cancer Society on Sunday 23 August. The National day event had to be cancelled, but many branches are running their own events. Saturday 5 September is set for the Women Drivers and Young Drivers Rally and our annual Awards Dinner is set down for Saturday 12 September. The 9 -90’s monthly meeting has resumed, the Parts Shed is open as usual, and we are back to our normal scheduled activities. Please look after yourselves, drive carefully and we will see you on the 25th at the AGM.

SECRETARY’S REPORT At the time of writing this we are about to have our first Noggin after Covid/19, I know that those of you that attend have been waiting for this. (Please practice safe Hygiene) I am forever hopeful that there ROD THROWER are a few members out there who Secretary are prepared to put their names ph 03 338 2320 forward for joining the committee. We are looking for nominations for Chairman, Club Captain and hopefully two or three Vice Captains to fill these important rolls. I know the majority of you would like to just rock up on the day and have it all laid out on a plate for you but that’s not the way its supposed to be. The most enjoyment you can get from the Club is by becoming involved, I’ve learnt this from experience. The Swap Meet is going ahead as normal in October and the team are looking for your support more than ever this year. We need a Captain of the work force team and Ian is happy to support someone who is prepared to take over this role. Also Tony would like somebody to take over One Make Car Displays next year and would be happy to have such a person offer to help this year to learn the ropes, or tie the knots or should their be loose ends. Don’t be shy just approch Ian McKinley Ph 03 349 6951 or Tony Meikle 03 327 7111 We are a great team and fun to be around.

ELECTROLYSIS RUST REMOVAL IN A PETROL TANK Warning – this process is dangerous – the electrolysis rust removal process also produces Hydrogen – BOOM! – so do it outside – not in the garage. During lock down, besides breaking my foot the day before, I also, later on, pulled all the spares for the 1924 Standard out of hiding in the shed and also all the stationary farm engine that had lurked there waiting their maybe restorations. One of these is a 1938 Lister F -Single cylinder OHV water cooled –an uprated Lister D .This was rescued from Takaka 40 odd years ago, 250 pounds weight in the boot of my then 1956 Daimler Century which gave the car great traction up the Lewis Pass in an early September very heavy snow fall. Anyway – I stripped and cleaned said engine, freed up many parts and tried electrolysis to free the rings from the piston. It removed the rust but not the carboned in rings—new set being made. Its petrol tank was both very rusty and dirty/ cruddy inside. I soldered up obvious leaks. Thought I would try the electrolysis process to clean out the rust and other muck and detritus. Using my 12 volt battery charger connected the negative to the tank and the positive to a rebar anode (any iron rod or bar would do) which had plastic tubing in strategic places to make sure it didn’t short out in the tank. Electrolyte was Borax (from Bunnings) but washing soda would have worked as well. Handfuls of this until it stopped dissolving in the water. The tank was completely

ADDINGTON CONDUCTIVE EDUCATIO We finally have most of our children back at school following lockdown, and I wanted to update you on what used your donation for. As you will recall, we shared the donation with CEC (Conductive Education Early Intervention Pre-School). This left us with $1,000 to spend. We had been wanting to purchase a swinging egg chair for some time, but did not have the available funds. The generosity of your club choosing us as donation recipients allowed us to purchase the exact chair we wanted. We needed to have it freighted from Auckland, and the total cost was just over $1,000, so the donation covered the purchase.

filled up with this brew.(i.e. the electrolyte). It hubbled and bubbled away-outside the garage with all the rust and rubbish going on the rebar anode which I removed and cleaned periodically (see photo). I kept this up for about 12 hours. The 5 amp Battery charger was providing about two amps and 10.5 to 11.8 volts. Then drained out the electrolyte, washed the tank out twice with very hot water and almost all the rust and all the muck had gone. Swilled through some Phosphoric Acid rust converter (Septone –Super Cheap) to mop up the remaining rust and it looks almost galvanised or tin plated inside so the idea worked-Yeah! Should work on any petrol tank?

TREVOR LIGHTFOOT

ON DONATION A hanging egg chair is a very useful item for us to meet the needs of our children. It provides a safe and secure seating position, and is very calming. Here’s a photo of Winnie using the chair which we thought you may be interested in. Thank you once again for the generous donation, which is directly benefiting our very special students.

RESTORATION OF THE YEAR

Canterbury Branch Annual VCC Restoration of the Year usually attracts a number of member entries of personal workmanship and achievement together with a decent crowd of enthusiasts. This year however, there was just one rather lonely entry for the small gathering of members to admire. Something of a surprise really after the considerable covid-19 lockdown period and postponement of the 2021 International Rally to 2022. Although sole 2020 entry, the 1979 Leyland Clubman 1275GT was a superb ‘ground-up’ restoration presented by Hamish Pierce. Like many enthusiasts, Hamish and Kelly Pierce have given the car a name. “Nugget” appropriately sports a pair of chrome appendages under his rear bumper!

COFFEE MORNING BRINGS THEM OUT! Our (first after lockdown) OCBC on Sunday 21 June once again attracted a great turnout, with around 80 cars and one motorcycle calling in to Cutler Park on a cool, overcast morning. What a great display of vehicles! There were a number of lockdown projects bought out, the most viewed being the MG-Ford special built up by George Kear out of parts he had loitering in his shed. Destined to be a trials car, it arrived on a trailer without its bodywork, so sported its heritage well. Another notable MG was the 1935 SA saloon a true survivor car just returned to the road by our treasurer Kevin Sarjeant A good number of other cars I’d not seen before were bought out, including a number of Japanese classics. Three of the first series of Mazda RX7’s arrived together – all owned within one family. Also a great mix of members and their cars from all club eras – more than enough to ensure the coffee cart was kept very busy. Thank-you to everyone who came out – it was great to see everyone walking around chatting to friends, checking out the vehicles, and celebrating what will hopefully be the end of COVID-19 restrictions. The next OCBC is Sunday 19th July – once again a 9.00am start. Hope to see you there. Colin Hey

COLIN HEY Swap Meet Convenor

UPDA TE

Swap Meet 2020 is All Go! This month we convened our first Swap Meet committee meeting to decide whether or not we should run Swap Meet this year. With the move to Level 1 there is no reason why we cannot, so we unanimously decided to begin planning and get the ‘machine’ moving. It will take a determined effort to get everything arranged and in place in time for October, but our committee is well up to the task and is certainly enthusiastic about making it all happen. What may make this year’s event even more special is that there haven’t been Swap Meets in Washdyke or Ashburton this year, and many took the opportunity during lockdown to sort out their garages/sheds, so there may very well be much more on offer this year. We can confirm that the Swap Meet will once again be a 3-day event, and run on 9th, 10th and 11th October. As per last year, there will once again be no trading permitted until Friday morning, and the grounds will be open for site set-up from first thing Thursday morning 8th October. The admittance fee will remain at $5 per day for Friday and Saturday, and entry on Sunday will be by gold coin. The reason for gold coin on Sunday is to encourage the public to attend on that day, recognising that the event effectively ends soon after mid-day. This year we really want to encourage all site-holders to stay for Sunday

in the expectation that significantly more public will attend that day. There is now some urgency to begin filling rosters for the various tasks that need to happen during Swap Meet, so can I ask absolutely every member to please be generous and give us at least an hour of your time over the weekend. None of the tasks are particularly challenging and you will not be doing it on your own. The rosters will be available to fill in at every noggin from July to October, or you can call or email me directly.

COMMERCIAL REPORT

NEIL SHASKEY Commercial Convenor

It Is good to be out and about again, and back to something resembling normal. Hopefully by the time this is in print I will have caught up with enough people from the Annual Commercial Rally for the noggin display, which was postponed from April. For anyone who attended the Annual Commercial Rally that I haven’t caught up with, I have the rally badges still sitting on my desk from before lockdown, so if you see me around come and collect one, whatever is left I’ll send out in the next couple of weeks. Commercial Noggin The Commercial Noggin is still being sorted out for July, as usual 3rd Wednesday of the month on 15th July, location still to be confirmed. Once I know what’s happening I’ll let as many know as possible, so if you haven’t heard from me give me a call.

MOTORCYCLE SECTION EVENT

VETERAN REPORT

TIM PALMER Veteran Convenor

We had two main picnic runs over the Summer months. About 35-40 mile runs seem to work well and appear to appeal to those who participated . It has got harder to get reasonable numbers along to Veteran events in recent years so as most would know we now include two wheel brake vintage as well. This has helped keep the numbers up . After seven years as Veteran convenor it is time for a change of guard and I am stepping down this year. I want to thank all the help and support I have received from members over the last few years . Thanks Tim

WINTER DOESN’T STOP US THE MORE THE MERRIER!

10 JUNE

Our first post Covid outing

For the first trip after lockdown we had a respectable number, 54 cars, a glorious day, an easy ride, a good raffle and what else can you wish for? It looked like most people enjoyed being out for the day and, due to the email, a few people we had not seen before came along. Thank you very much Rosalie for sending out the email for us. HANGI IS CANCELLED. Unfortunately I have had a last minute cancellation of the Hangi. We had the numbers, but the Marae haven’t got themselves sorted yet. OUR PLAN B FOR JULY July 8 Pot Luck at the Barn – 11.30 for 12 noon. July 8 Pot Luck at the Barn 11.30 for 12 noon. The usual rules. Homemade food only and remember no Couplands or Supermarket food. The exception as always - Sydenham Bakery food is allowed! The Barn will be warm and cosy. Graeme Sword will take care of that. And, if I remember, those who have pre-paid the Hangi will get their money back! August 12 Organised by Bruce Miles and Ken James. Meet at the Bottle Lake Carpark, Waitikiri Drive, at 9.55pm The Team and I are looking forward to the Pot Luck Lunch. See you in July.

VELOSOLEX OWNERS GROUP

ROYCE VOG 1

JUNE RUN – COVID BLOWOUT It’s been three months since we’ve been able to rev up our motors and hit the road – we’d tried in March but the weather was always against us and Pieter Maat’s Velo Solex trike. then the “dreaded virus” hit us. The VOG’s managed to entertain themselves quite well during this time with many projects in the workshop undertaken. Pieter Maat was one such member who, using parts he had lying around the shed plus a few more he manged to scrounge from Gary Thompson, built himself a Velosolex trike. Pieter reckons that the trike performs even better than his two-wheel version. Thanks to Noel Nevin who organised our run for June. A brilliant day with a fresh -1 degree start from Cutler Park, a short jaunt along McLeans Island road to the Wolseley Car Club who have their HQ just behind the Caravan Club grounds. None of us even knew this existed. What a great set up their club has (they were earthquaked out of their original home in New Brighton). Housed in 3 x 40’ shipping containers are many Wolseley parts old and new. Wolseley Car Club members Eddy, Nancy and Ray turned on a magnificent morning tea for us. Then it was a long haul at 29k/hr out to the Old West Coast Rd just as well there was no Nor’wester blowing. We eventually made it to the “Yaldy” for a great catch up with everyone, wow it was good to be back to a normal social gathering with our VOG mates once again. The return run back to the VCC grounds along quieter roads was uneventful until close to the finish Brian Newberry’s machine decided it didn’t want to go any further and was loaded on the back up trailer. It had been performing very well up until then after a few problems Brian had encountered on earlier runs this year. Winner this month of the coveted trophy was Wayne Gath. He admitted to VOG 1 that he had just found out that if he used the decompression lever when pedal starting his Solex it made the job a lot easier. Goodness me Wayne I thought everyone knew this piece of info.

DAFFODIL RALLY 2020 SUNDAY 23 AUGUST

Although not a nationally coordinated event this year because of the earlier COVID-19 restrictions, many VCC branches (including ours) have decided to go ahead and run the event anyway now that we are back to Alert Level 1. This year the format will be slightly different. We will be starting the event in four different locations, currently proposed as Rangiora, Rolleston, Cashmere and New Brighton. There will be a $10 entry fee per vehicle to take part in the event, and at 10.30 am the runs will leave those destinations, eventually converging in our grounds at Cutler Park in time for lunch. All the cars will go on display there, and the grounds will be open to the public to call in and have a look, and in turn make a donation to the Cancer Society. There will be BBQ lunch available for purchase in the grounds for those who wish. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the cancer society. As for the previous two Daffodil Rally’s, we will be inviting all one-make clubs and anyone who has a classic or collectable vehicle to take part – this is a great opportunity to showcase our club facilities and raise funds for a very worthy cause.

Mark the date in your diary now
