CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Since the first Swap Meet in 1976 there have always been weather conditions to worry about and some extreme conditions have been experienced over those years. It was never envisaged that ROSS BUTLER something other than weather Chairman would disrupt the running of Swap ph 03 352 3160 Meet but the Covid Virus has been the king hit. .As is well-known, Swap Meet is the major fundraising event run by the Branch each year and having to cancel it for 2020 was a decision that was not made lightly. Swap Meet is a major occasion for the Parts Shed also which will now generate possibly 25% less for the Branch in 2020 than in normal years. Fortunately, prudent management of the Branch and its finances by successive committees and treasurers have seen that we have sound reserves to carry us through. The September Noggin was abandoned because of the restrictions in place relating to numbers at gatherings but at this time, following the alert level change, the October Noggin will go ahead as usual. Entry Forms for the Homestead Run on the 22nd November are in the September Hub or on the Branch Website and close on November 8th. The Branch has had a car transporter trailer built for the use and collection or movement of vehicles by the Parts Shed. This will also be available for members’ use at a modest cost and an appropriate vehicle must be used for towing. For further information contact me on 352-3160 or 021 314-221.

We would still like more members to chose to have their Hub sent by email, there will come a time when you will probably have to pay to have the hub printed and posted as is already happening in some branches. The form this will take will hopefully be dealt with in the coming months. The emailing issues we have been having are getting better but probably still needs some fine tuning. I would like to remind you, if you don’t receive your Hub before the Noggin then something is amiss and you need to check your spam box. The next step is to enter the Hub email address into your address book <vccthehub@gmail.com> into your email programe, then contact by email the Editor Rosalie at this address explaining what you have done. If all else fails and you want to see it straight away go to the Canterbury Branch Web Site (google “Canterbury Branch Vintage Car Club”) or visit this link: www.canterburybranchvintagecarclub.org.nz/newsletter Happy motoring and I’ll see you for a chat at OCBC on 18 Oct. COLIN HEY Swap Meet Convenor

UPDA TE

Ph 03 359 8738 E heywolseley699@gmail.com As everyone is by now (hopefully) aware, Swap Meet 2020 has been cancelled. Although most people seem to understand the reason for doing this, there have been several comments that we made the decision too early, especially now that we have returned to Level 1 restrictions. One person did take the time to write an email expressing this, so I have repeated my written answer back for benefit of everyone so that there is a fuller understanding of both when and why the decision was made. As well as the comments made in my response, it is important to realise that any further community outbreak (especially if it were to occur in Christchurch) will undoubtedly result in restrictions being imposed again – a constant risk for any proposed event. “The decision to cancel had to be made two weeks ago, and followed the announcement on Friday 4th September which extended Level 2 restrictions nation-wide, with no indication of certainty at that point at all as to when they would change. Even if there was a possibility of definitely moving to Level 1, there was no certainty that even at Level 1 there would be no restrictions on the number of people allowed at gatherings or events. To delay our decision beyond that date (and it was a full Swap Meet Commitee decision) would mean that we would have to commit to several thousand dollars worth of expenditure including advertising, preparation and lodging of a traffic management plan, and confirmation and paying deposits for outside suppliers of goods and services to Swap Meet. Also top of mind were many of our site holders and visitors who travel from throughout the country who would not be able to claim refunds for cancelled ferry bookings and accommodation had they proceeded to book and then we cancelled later. Although the event is an ‘outdoors’ event, there are also many indoor activities associated with it, including those run from the hall such as food service, the bar, and the two social evenings. In many cases too the busier sites have side-by-side buyers for much of the day. This, coupled with the fact that many of the participants are 60 years plus in age, makes the whole environment very risky unless we had absolute certainty that COVID had been completely eliminated from community transmission. Be assured the decision was not made lightly, and was made in the best interests of our club as a whole, and our members.” 5

PARTS SHED

WAYNE STOCKS Parts Shed

Hi everyone, The Parts Shed is ticking along nicely, We have been getting good attendances and some good sales which means that people have been finding what they are looking for. This is something we have been working hard to achieve. For instance our construction gang have built a new covered wheel rack outside. Peter Wright has spent a considerable time and effort putting all the wheels into rim sizes cross referenced with stud numbers. Now it only takes a few minutes to locate that elusive wheel. This is exactly what we are aiming to do throughout the parts complex. making parts easier to find. Our new car transporter trailer is due this Friday and the recovery jobs are mounting up. Three at the last count so we are looking forward to receiving that. It is ready and Ross Butler has been to view it and is in the process of registering it. We have just received a quite good body only for an Austin seven Box Saloon with a sunshine roof. This would make a good starting point for a restoration project that wouldn’t break the bank as there are still lots of spares available for these cars. Available from the “Parts Shed” just ask at the desk. Also an old engine hoist for a replica workshop William Morris Birmingham maker. These are very popular and the last one didn’t make it inside the door before it was sold and this one is in better condition.

WOMEN & YOUNG DRIVERS RALLY

Report by BARBARA JOHNSTONE

This event was in danger of being canned this year until the intervention of those two masters of organisation, Heather Glenday and Claire Campion Canterbury VCC turned on another great day for this event. Fourty-four young and not so young drivers and passengers in a mix of 20 cars from Minis to Rovers, young to vintage set off. Thanks to Hadstock farms for the donation of daffodils that were well received and supported, which, with the rally entry donations raised $262 for the Cancer Society. Gathering at Cutler Park for a 10am start on a beauty day we followed the rally instructions to meander along the Old West Coast Road through the gorge and into Oxford. We headed through to Sefton and into Amberley. Some got to experience more of the countryside than others, not naming anybody in particular, Katryna. The quizz baffled us on some points and even trying to phone a friend was a fizzer. As the men would say, “only enough time at the market to whizz around and get out of there. Then onwards toward Leithfield to enjoy the great food and company of the rally entrants at A Better Half Kitchen and Bar. Obviously some had a better grasp on this whole rally amble thing than the newbie on the block. I definitely need to brush up on my general knowledge. Full marks to Julie Sword and crew who got 100% without google. There was only one question which all participants got correct...

10

It was great to see the family winning team of Taylor White in his 1985 Toyota Starlet Oldest vehicle on the rally achieving the Young Driver’s Model A, Barbara Hill. award and Linda White in the well presented 1975 Triumph Spitfire taking home the Woman Driver trophy. A big thank you to Claire Campion and Heather Glenday for the organising and pushing Wolseley, Gay Goodman. to make it happen this year, amidst the stress and angst of dealing with the new Covid 19 imposed rules and social distancing requirements. It certainly helps to at least spend some time having fun with great Mini, Barbara Johnstone cars and great people. BAR REPORT

GILL STEVENSON Bar Manager

Now that we are back in level 1 the monthly noggins will be returning and the bar staff are looking forward to seeing you all. During the last period of level 2 Covid 19 precautions the bars and restaurants were only able to operate with a maximum occupancy of 100, members of the motorbike section approached the committee and it was approved for them to run a Friday night social, for roughly 2 hours, this was well patronized and attended by new and old members of the club throughout the month. The proceeds from these events have now been banked. Should we have the misfortune to return to a higher Covid level this event could be re addressed.

2020 ALL BRITISH DAY Sunday 1 November The start point will be our Vintage Car Club grounds on McLeans Island Road, where vehicles will need to assemble between 9.30 and 10.30 am. Soon after 10.30 all vehicles will depart on a scenic run which will take participants to a country domain. A mix of long and medium runs provided to cater for everyone.

VELOSOLEX OWNERS GROUP

ROYCE VOG 1

Goodness me where do all these ‘Solex’s come from. Tuesday 8 September saw 19 riders arrive for a day of excitement out on these wee beauty’s. We keep breaking records all the time and VOG 1 thought that it would just be a “flash in the pan” event. How wrong was I. The run this time took us again through the “Red Zone” of Dallington/Avonside and I must admit I was very impressed in how tidy the area around Avonside Drive is looking with grass mowed and garden plots still being tended. What we thought was going to be a short sweet run turned out to be quite an eventful one what with breakdowns and a puncture it took us 45 minutes to cover some 12k’s and that was even before we made the lunch stop. But who cares it gave us all plenty of opportunity to have a yarn on the roadside on a wonderful Spring morning. Thanks to Ray Oakes for organising the day.

PLENTY OF NEW FACES VCC CANTERBURY

9-90s

WINTER DOESN’T STOP US THE MORE THE MERRIER!

Tony Becker organised our September JOHN KUIPERS run through the countryside to Pegasus 9-90’s Coordinator and the new subdivision across the main road north. I didn’t realise Pegasus had got so big. We drove down to Pegasus beach, a new sight for most of us, then carried on to Doug Moody’s place in Loburn North. A big thank you Doug. He had organised a lot of neighbours with vintage cars to gather and what a collection greeted us. Absolutely fantastic. A great display. Parking was great and made it so easy for the circle and the raffle. We had approx. 60 cars so we stayed just below the limit of 100 people. This was a great day out. Thank you so much Tony. Tony had printed out 50 copies of the run and didn’t have enough! I nearly panicked. I thought we were going to run out of raffle tickets! We are seeing a lot of new faces and looking forward to seeing you all next month. JK and the team. October 7 : Alan and Barbara Hill Meet at The Peg Carpark, Belfast Hotel at 9.55am November 11: Graham Tulett Meet at the Rolleston Community Centre, leaving at 9.55am sharp. Have a full tank and if the weather is kind to us a fantastic trip is being organised, one you don’t want to miss. December 9: Christmas Lunch at Pineacres. $25 a head. Eighty people is the limit so be in quick. Pre-pay at the October outing, I will take your name and money. No cheques or IOUs. 14

Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee

Colin Hey

Another great turnout on Sunday 20 September, this month boosted by the presence of the Triumph Car Club members, who made OCBC their start point for their monthly run. Once again great weather and a solid turnout of around 70 vehicles of all ages (including a good number of motorcycles as well) which kept the coffee cart very busy. One of this month’s more noteworthy cars was the stunning red 1969 Fiberfab Jamaican – a very rare USA Replica Car. This car is the only example in Australasia, and is owned by Paul Yaxley. It is built around a worked Triumph TR6 engine and chassis, and runs a Toyota Supra gearbox and diff. This car has been one of a number of seldom-seen classics that arrive at OCBC and make it so worthwhile attending the event. The next OCBC is on Sunday 18 October (3rd Sunday in the month), running again from 9.00am until after 11.00am. Incidentally, for any of our VCC members who also belong to one-make clubs – you are more than welcome (encouraged in fact) to make OCBC the start venue for your club runs.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT

CHRIS LEITH Motorcycle Section

The days are getting longer; soon it will be Daylight Savings time, offering plenty of after work (or after dinner) runs… PAST EVENTS

9th September – Motorcycle Noggin. Held at Motorcycle Corner, a good turnout enjoyed a nice evening telling lies again. 19th September – Scooter & Under 250cc Motorcycle Run. Also includes all Veteran and Vintage motorcycles, regardless of size. Started from Pomeroy’s; about 13 intrepid riders on a variety of machines tackled the course of about 130 km’s. See elsewhere for a full report. 20th September – Ruff Run & Working Bee. The OCBC coffee morning was on as well, we had a working bee to shift firewood and level off the mound. A good turnout, some concentrated on the tasks at hand while one or two tried out the Club 1928 Ariel, a 1912 Triumph single speed no clutch, as well as a 1915 Royal Enfield. All good fun… About a dozen stayed on for the BBQ lunch… 26th September – Fish & Chip Run. As the planned run to Hororata fell over due to the swap meet being cancelled, we decided on a garage raid in Fendalton instead. Full report next month. FUTURE EVENTS

14th October – Noggin. At Motorcycle Corner, but will look out for a visit somewhere instead? If we do, will advise via the motorcycle database email messaging, so keep an eye out for that. 17th – 18th October – Girder Fork Rally to Akaroa. Leaves Liquorland Amyes Road; M Glenday in charge. Living Springs for morning tea, Little River lunch. 24th October – Fish & Chip Run. No destination organised; is Labour Day weekend. Meet at the BP Service Station, Moorhouse Ave/Antigua St corner, 10.15am for a 10.30 am departure. Rider’s choice on destination. 2nd November – Annual Motorcycle Rally. POSTPONED. To spread the load of all of the Motorcycle Major events all coming at once the decision has been made to MOVE the 16

Annual Motorcycle Rally until 22nd February 2021. This date is that for the VCC Commercial Rally, so we hope to tie in with the start, and lunch break. More details later. 11th November – Noggin. A garage raid in the Sydenham area has been organised, so meet at the Speights Ale House, Tower Junction 7.00 pm for a 7.30 pm departure to the destination. 22nd November – Homestead Run. Organised by motorcycle committee man Jens Christensen; bike friendly event. Starts Prebbleton Domain, Tosswill Road. Entries are on line now, you need to enter and pay your monies. 28th November – Fish & Chip run. Nothing special organised yet. 9th December – Noggin, Christmas Special. Looking at another very popular Christmas Event, more details next month. This is about it for this month; we are proving to be THE active section of the Branch!

Great to see a good bike representation at tthe last OCBC - which coincided with our Ruff Run & Working Bee.

Scooter & Small Motorcycle Run

19 September

Report by DAVE COOK

From our meeting place at Pomeroy’s Old Brewery Inn, 13 bikes set off and headed straight for the hills via Sumner and over Evens Pass to Lyttleton. Evens Pass was a real test for the small engines with one feisty little Honda step through acting more like a bronco horse at a rodeo event. Unfortunately, more damage to the rider than the bike. On closer inspection at our lunch stop this resulted in a trip to A&E to get a few stitches. (10 required in all, to the leg). Back to the run, we regrouped at the tunnel entrance and on the Heathcote side were greeted with some funny looks from two lollipop ladies controlling road works. We managed to brighten up their day giving them a friendly wave and a toot. We headed straight to New Brighton following the coastline to Brookland then crossing the Waimakariri River. Heading inland we encountered two sections of loose gravel, just to prove the older riders still had it in them. Interesting to say the least! Small diameter wheels on gravel are definitely not the best combination but we acccepted the challenge dutifully. Lunch

18

stop at The Plough Hotel Rangiora was plentiful and also provided something to wash the dust down with. Prizegiving was after lunch due to our back up vehicle having to make a trip to A&E. Best over all scooter was awarded to Dave Cook and let’s call it a special prize went to Royce. He can tell you the details why next time you see him. The afternoon run finished back at Pomeroy’s for a few that wanted to celebrate a great day’s ride, 85km morning section and 43Km in the afternoon, you could really feel that bike seat by the end of the day! A big thank you to Graham Barnett for organising the event and being back-up. Having been postponed previously due to Covid–19 this was a fantastic run in the end, enjoyed by all and topped off with bright sunny weather.

DUTTON GARAGE MALVERN RUN

HORORATA HIGHLAND GAMES 2020

So far we are managing to dodge all those dreaded covid bullets and at this stage I’m positive that the Games will be on. Remember to get those entries in by the 18th October as no late entries can be accepted. Start is at the Darfield Recreation Centre at 9:30am so please be there in plenty of time to collect your rally pack and to fit your rally number to your vehicle before heading off on a short run to Hororata. For those with very early veterans you may wish to trailer them to the assembly point at the Hororata Cenotaph where there is plenty of parking. Please still come to the Darfield Recreation Centre for your rally pack. At the Hororata Cenotaph the vehicles are to be lined up in numerical order for the entry to the games venue. It is approx 1km from the Cenotaph to the games and there will be marshals to direct us to the Games Arena and then to our allocated parking and display area. Our entry into the Games is at 10:30. Please ensure that everyone in your vehicle is wearing the wristband that you have been issued with. Remember we have committed to remaining as a display until 4:00pm and it is a condition of our entry. So bonnie laddies and lassies, get your kilts pressed, get your steed prepped and get your entries in and veteran owners remember that the 2020 Veteran rally on the 8th starts at the Darfield Recreation Centre and goes to the Old Rustic Hotel at Oxford for a BBQ lunch. Those north of the Waimak will have an alternative start point on their side of the divide. See you all there. Malcolm McGibbon

ANNUAL

VINTAGE RALLY ENTRIES CLOSE 23 October 2020.

SUNDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2020

ENTRY FORM

This year the rally route will begin at Cutler Park and finish with a BBQ Lunch in Oxford meeting up with the Annual Veteran Rally. We will be travelling approximately 90km to the lunch venue. After an enjoyable lunch you are free to find your own way home at your leisure The route consists of roads across North Canterbury’s plains on a mix of tar seal and shingle roads with some gentle foothill roads for good measure. If you have entered the rally on Saturday 7 November you will not be travelling the same roads, so why not make a weekend of it! First car away at 10:15. Vintage cars will compete for the Ken & Kenneth Lowden Trophy, Rae Trophy and Eason Trophy. All prizes will be presented at the December Noggin.
