CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Our season’s activities are off to a rather shaky start with some restrictions applying due to our lockdown status. In the current Lockdown level 2 the Parts Shed is able to continue operating and the ROSS BUTLER Woman Drivers Run will go ahead. Chairman Alert Level 2 is scheduled to end on 6 ph 03 352 3160 September - this means we need to postpone our September noggin until Thursday 10 September. There will be a register to record all those present so we ask that everyone sign in on arrival. Planning and organisation of other events scheduled for September and October continue, subject to there being no further restrictions. In the event of new or extended restrictions, any alterations to the program will be notified by email and listed on our Branch website. The Awards Dinner on Saturday 12th September is still on and the last opportunity to get tickets for this occasion will be at the September Noggin. The P-Group Rally is on 4 October, entry forms for this are in this issue of The Hub and on our Branch website. A short time back the Parts Shed had a Daimler Conquest, in running order, currently licenced and complete with a new WoF donated. Our sincere thanks go to Peter and Janet Cornelius for their very generous gesture and I am pleased to report that this car has been sold and the new owner will very likely be joining the Club. Swap Meet 2020 continues to be organised on the basis that the country will be free of controls which would impact on movements of supporters from around the regions and limits on numbers attending. We have a full calendar ahead of us and fingers are crossed that this will not be sabotaged by Covid-19 restrictions. It is fortunate that a lot of our activities take place outside, where numbers and social distancing requirements can be complied with as long as lockdown status does not go above Level 2.

SECRETARY’S REPORT VCCNZ National AGM Here are some highlights from our Club AGM held in Wanganui. Owing to Covid numbers attendance was well down but a quorum was still achieved. Andrew Anderson gave his usual stimulating speech and to use a phase we all know he stressed we are a team of 9,000 and the need to work together for the benefit and future of the Club.

ROD THROWER Secretary & Branch Delegate ph 03 338 2320

The proposed Notice of Motion on on-line membership was given formal Notice of Motion Status and will now go forward for voting by all members in 2021. A suggestion was put from a Canterbury member that the Club could produce a business type card that members could carry in their wallet and branches could use to promote the Club by handing out or placing on classic cars in car parks etc. NOTE: As Delegate I would have found it helpful if I had known this was being tabled at the meeting in advance. Waikato Branch produce their own. It was noted some people take exception to things being placed on their cars, it was thought a personal contact might be better. There is a new National Brochure being produced and should be available to branches early next year. This was supported by a couple of other branches. There were a number of presentations made at the AGM . Congratulations to the following:

Life Membership Awarded to Rod Brayshaw (Club Registrar) Life Membership Awarded to John Coomber (Long dedicated Service to Club) John Goddard Trophy Awarded to Don Muller (Service to Club as Archivist) Julie Cairns-Gee 25 years Office Manager. Chris Leith (Canterbury) Elected as Club Secretary/ Treasurer.

A presentation will take place at a later date to outgoing Secretary/ Treasurer Michael Lavender owing to him being unable to attend. Bid from Southland Branch to run the 2023 National Motorcycle Rally. Thanks were given to Canterbury for 4

withdrawing their Bid in favour of Southland and that they were willing to step in if needed. Notice of North Island Club Captain’s Tour (Bay of Plenty) and first Summer Wine Tour (work in progress). National Commercial Rally Nth Island 2021.(work in progress) National Vintage Rally (work in progress) Suggestion made from a branch member to check your insurance for the following when taking your vehicle in for repairs. Are the parts insured if removed from the vehicle, like the motor then being sent somewhere else for work? Is your vehicle covered under the repairer’s liability insurance if the repairer has not been neglilent? Food for thought. Health and Safety Discussion led by George Kear on duty of care when running rallies Rebranding: Rebranding is NOT a name change just a new Logo. Designs in progress and will be submitted to March Executive Meeting 2021 then forwarded to branches for discussion with members. Approach to VCC from outside motoring clubs to be able to join the VCC (Ongoing work in progress). Reports from Management Committee available by email or on club notice board. The Hub is being printed but not posted and there will be a copy at the noggin on the 10th subject to that taking place. Printed copies will be avaliable at the parts shed from next week. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR IDEA RESURFACES I would like to bring up again an idea that Pat Cutler wanted many years ago but is even more relevant now. We now have many vehicles that for reasons of cost and practicality are no longer road registered or not used in today’s traffic. Also opportunities to test run new restorations on the road are very limited. If we could lay out a private road within the grounds that was sealed or at least rolled gravel that would give an area for using the vehicles. As an example my 1913 TT Triumph has no gears, clutch, starter pedals and limited braking. A decent area to test and tune would be great. I know the motorcycle section do their rough runs and others will say use my Triumph on the road but there are many who will not and we miss out hearing and seeing them. Wouldn’t it be great to have early vehicles on a road at our monthly coffee and cars. We have the area to do this and long term with our membership getting steadily older I’m sure a private road would be greatly appreciated. Chris Parker

APPALLING ABUSE I am not a member of the Canterbury Branch these days, having recently swapped to the Banks Peninsula appendage of the VCC. I attended the Canterbury branch noggin on Thursday 6 August as a visitor. My reason for writing is to record the appalling display of abuse to a full hall from an assumed member, in relation to his displeasure at the recent changes made to the Hub. It was most unpleasant hearing this vitriol directed at those responsible for the perceived shortcomings, and I hope it has been dealt with to prevent further occurrences. For the record, the changes made to the Hub are, in my view, timely and appropriate, and are to be commended. No more waffley reports, no more skimming to find what’s on, the list goes on. Sure, if any member has an article of interest then by all means include it, but they are generally few and far between. Take heart, the Hub has been catapulted into the modern world, and is all the better for it. John McDonald

AUGUST

NOGGIN August Display

DON MULLER Noggin Displays Co-ordinator Ph 385 6850

Our theme was Renault cars with a nice cross section of different models. This display was really unique, being the first time that three of the four display cars were owned by the same person. Thank you very much for the big family effort from James and Catherine Polden to get their their Renaults to the display. The addition of Renault memorabilia, including the Renault 4CV pedal car that one of their sons pedalled into our pedal car display a few years ago, was a nice touch. Also, a big thank you to Malcom McGibbon for transporting his immaculate 1914 Renault AX, in from Darfield. You should see Malcom’s new remote operated tipping, car transporter in action, it’s great to watch. A great way to get your Veteran safely to a venue, dry and without stone chips. The display vehicles were: James & Catherine Polden 1959 Renault 4CV, 1960 Renault 750 & 1984 Renault 5 LE turbo. Malcom McGibbon

1914 Renault AG Van.

COMMERCIAL REPORT

NEIL SHASKEY Commercial Convenor

Unfortunately the August commercial noggin could not go ahead as planned due to Covid restrictions, apologies to those who didn’t get the message in time, hopefully we can catch up with this at a later date. Arrangements for the September commercial noggin are still a work in progress, hopefully this will be sorted shortly and I can confirm what the plan is, depending on Covid restrictions of course. If you haven’t heard from me between now and then give me a call to check up on what has been decided.

NOGGIN IS POSTPONED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 10

If you have a lockdown project to bring along and display please phone Don Muller on 03 385 6850, to book space on the display table.

PARTS SHED

WAYNE STOCKS Parts Shed

Hi everyone. Well August has been another good month for the Parts Shed with good numbers taking advantage of finding parts for their projects amongst the thousands of parts held in stock. The engine shed has had considerable attention given to it and many engines have now been identified and marked thanks to the efforts of Bob Gough and Ian Sims. Our construction gang has been busy despite adverse weather conditions and have fitted a roof over the two containers at the rear of the Parts Shed. these will be used by the swap meet committee for swap meet storage.. thanks to Niel Stephenson and his team of construction workers for a magnificent effort. A great asset for the club. Our big news is that we have ordered our new car transporter trailer which will be here next month. This will allow us to recover cars much easier and safer and will be a great asset to our club overall. Many thanks to Joe Grose for his support by lending us his private trailer in the past. It was most appreciated . Wayne Stocks spare parts department. 9

VETERAN REPORT

COLIN HEY Veteran Convenor Ph 359 8737

Time to start getting the covers off the veteran vehicles for the start of this season and give them a trial run before the rallying starts. Our own two Wolseleys need an oil change and good check-over, so something to schedule in for the next couple of weeks. Malcolm McGibbon is working hard on a planned run and display at the Hororata Highland Games on Saturday 7th November, this will be the replacement event for the annual VCC Duttons Anzac Day run that had to be postponed because of the Level 4 restrictions earlier this year. This will be the pre-run for the combined Veteran and Vintage Rallies on Sunday 8 November, which at this stage look like they will probably finish in the Oxford area. The full details will be in next month’s hub. I would also like to arrange at least two more veteran noggins in the coming months, so if you have a shed worthy of a visit one week evening, or can suggest a suitable place to visit, please drop me a line. Don’t think your shed has to be immaculate - there’s nothing like looking at a project in progress to keep us all inspired. Also, for those members who also belong to the Veteran Car Club, don’t forget the AGM on Saturday 19th, followed by the Spring Run on Sunday 20th. The latter will be combined with the Model T Club. May your beaded wheels run true.

RECORD TURNOUT Yet another record turn out on a magic early spring morning – 16 riders plus our backup were on the starting grid at the Woolston Club carpark on 11 August. All riders including two new members were buzzing with excitement and an adrenalin rush as we awaited the start of another exhilarating jaunt out on our “highly tuned” machines. The ride this month arranged by VCC member Barry Walker took us on a circuitous route in the Woolston area along several of the new walkway/cycleway tracks to eventually end up on Garlands Road for a visit to Briford Trailers where we viewed Brian Ford’s collection of older motorbikes and the amazing Boss Hoss V8 motorbikes – what a machine they are. Also his collection of pedal cars from a bygone era. Brian also took us for a guided tour through his factory and showed us the assembly process of his well known trailers. A very interesting trip thanks Barry.

Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee Another really good turnout on Sunday 16 August - the weather was good enough to even coax out some tourers and convertibles. The really good thing about this event is that it still complies with Covid Level 2 restrictions (for now anyway), although if numbers continue to climb it won’t be long before we reach the 100 persons threshold. If this happens we probably do have the option of assembling a second group in another part of our expansive grounds. Regardless of this, we will continue to have contact tracing in place – we now have an official QR code for scanning there, as well as a register to sign if you don’t have the app on your phone. The next OCBC will be on Sunday 20th September, starting time will be 9.00am.

THE DAFFODIL RALLY That Wasn’t Unfortunately the return to Level 2 restrictions necessitated the cancelling of this event very unfortunate given that it’s been a very worthwhile fundraising event for the Cancer Society. It was certainly shaping up to be another great event. At this stage no decision has been made whether we will reschedule it for another date, but we’ll notify everyone in plenty of time if this does happen. The difficulty will be finding another date that does not clash with another event, be it one of our own or another open event such as one of the motorfests. If you were planning on attending and have not done so already, please consider sending what would have been your $10 entry donation directly to the Cancer Society anyway. You can do this by clicking here. Also, a big thanks to those who offered to marshal on the day - I really appreciated your offers of help.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT

CHRIS LEITH Motorcycle Section

Spring is here! The spring is sprung, the grass is riz. I wonder where the boidie is. They say the boidie’s on the wing. But that’s absoid. The wing is on the bird. In spite of what you may think, the above excerpt was not written by Ogden Nash! PAST EVENTS

1 August – Round the Bays Run. Fifteen bikes fronted up, plus one car. Left the PMH, over Dyers Pass, and down into Governor’s Bay. Left around the Bays towards Lyttelton, up Evans Pass, out to Godley Head before stopping at the New Brighton WMC for lunch. The post lunch run up the coast to the Waimakariri Tavern for afternoon refreshments before peeling off home. Thanks to Royce Baker for a great event. 8 – 9 August – Mid Winter Run. Nine bikes set out in cool “rain-has-just-stopped” conditions – and that was the last of the rain all weekend. Old West Coast Road, Sheffield for pies, Blue Pub Methven lunch, Railway Pub Rakaia, then to our digs at the Crate & Barrel, Leeston. Very good accommodation, excellent meals; a successful event. Thanks to John Benn for organising, and back-up Barry Townshend. 12 August – Noggin Night. At the Valley Inn, Heathcote Valley. Small turn-out. Nice place, very friendly. 22 August – Fish & Chip Run. Two BMW’s, a Moto Guzzi, a Harley, and a Gilera, six riders and a pillion, left the BP Moorhouse. The route took riders over Dyers Pass, through Governor’s Bay, Gebbes Pass, then via Little River to the Hill Top for lunch. Mixture of sunshine and fog, and plenty of lake flies to splatter everyone! No breakdowns, thoroughly enjoyable day out! Thanks John Benn for the write-up! 23 August – Daffodil Day Run. While the branch event was cancelled, this did not prevent a number of the motorcycle group, who were planning on giving their cars a run, from meeting at the Social Corner, Cutler Park, for a picnic lunch. We all paid the “entry fee” plus brought along items for a four prizes hamper raffle. Pleased to say we raised about $240 for the Cancer Society; well done all! 14

FUTURE EVENTS

9 September – Motorcycle Noggin. This will be at Motorcycle Corner, Cutler Park, McLeans Island. 7.30 pm onwards. 19 September – Scooter & Under 250cc Motorcycle Run. No entry form, just turn up at the start. Back-up vehicle + trailer provided. 26 September – Fish & Chip Run. Will be a run to the Hororata Swap Meet, meeting 8.30 am, to hopefully get there before all the bargains have gone… 27 September – Ruff Run & Working Bee (pre Swap Meet working bee to tidy the place up…) If you are lucky, there may be a BBQ lunch put on… ADVANCE WARNING

9-10-11 October – Swap Meet. Motorcyclists will roster to look after toilets etc. as last year. 14 October – Motorcycle Noggin. Info next month. 17 – 18 October – Girder Fork Rally to Akaroa, Overnight. See elsewhere for info and entry form. 2 November – Annual Motorcycle Rally. POSTPONED. To spread the load of all of the Motorcycle Major events all coming at once the decision has been made to MOVE the Annual Motorcycle Rally until 22nd February 2021. This date is that for the VCC Commercial Rally, so we hope to tie in with the start, and lunch break. More details later. That’s it for this month; if your WOF expired during lockdown you have until 10 October to renew without penalty…

A FULL CARPARK Well, what a day with this Covid 19 palaver. Too late to cancel the outing we would meet at the Bottle Lake Carpark as planned and would take it from there and cancel it there and then. But the carpark was full with the 9-90s (about 40 cars) so I decided we would go ahead. We recorded all the participant’s names and phone numbers.

WINTER DOESN’T STOP US THE MORE THE MERRIER!

JOHN KUIPERS 9-90’s Coordinator

On our way we went and what a day. Ken and Bruce did a great job going to suburbs we don’t go to very often, a nice ride through the countryside on roads seldom travelled to our destination. Treasure sheds full of old machinery and the earliest steam tractors, vintage cars, you name it and it was there. A big thank you to the Miles family for their hospitality. For lunch we went to the Cust Community Centre where we sat out in the sun. I think I can speak on behalf of everyone and thank Ken and Bruce for a great day. After lunch people had the choice of the Cust Museum or the Done and Dusted Antique Shop. We had the best raffle ever. Now another matter. I would like to have everyone’s email addresses. I have the addresses of most people who participate in the 9-90s but if I haven’t got yours please send it to me. My email gjmkuipers@xtra.co.nz So in these times I can send a message or cancellation in one click. I only want your email address – I don’t want your bank account number! FUTURE 9-90S EVENTS

Andrew Anderson spoke to the meeting on the inactivity of 90% of the Branch Members being a modern trend which we all need to work on. 22

Leigh Craythorne spoke of disappointment in negative feelings being bandied around. It was then summed up by John Coomber that we are a difficult Club to mould into but we do have some of the best facilities in the country and we all need to be aware of this issue of new members. Gary Genet mentioned respect needed amongst our members, we need to help each other. Finale speaker Kurt Ebrecht gave run down on how Motor Cycle Section integrate their new arrivals. Bob Humm raised the matter of the printing of The Hub. Kevin gave run down on costs and the need to cut down where we can until after the Swap Meet and we see what our return will be from that. Discussion followed on format of the Hub “News Letter” as opposed to “Magazine” - Content, length of reports. Marilyn bought up about the levy being raised to cover the increased costs. Support shown for current style of the Hub John summed up with reminders of the work that members do around the Branch which is done by volunteers and we need more people to step up or our costs are going to continue to rise. Colin Hey supported what we do and feels the Branch is in good heart. Andrew Anderson gave talk on it being the 75th Anniversary of the Club and what we were doing about the 90% of members who don’t come to meetings etc. Discussion on Trophies and new cabinet. Leigh commented she is quite happy to remain as Custodian of Trophies Bob Humm reminded all members and committee to wear their name badges, and the running of a small run by the Club to celebrate the 75yrs of the Club. Presentation by George Kear to out-going Chairman John Coomber and wife Christine with thanks from the Commmittee and Members. MINUTE’S SILENCE For Members who have passed away during the year. There being no further business, The meeting was closed at 3-45pm. 23
