Chairman’s Report Welcome to another year of motoring events and fun. Over the holiday break we have had lots of rain (fortunately) and a lot of very hot days. I trust that you have not had overheating problems with any of your older vehicles. I know we sometimes frown on more modern vehicles, but there is something to be said for the air conditioning of our modern fleet in this sort of weather. The Children’s Christmas Picnic was a great success again thanks to Alan Parris and the team of helpers who put the event on. The same can’t be said for the Boxing Day Run, which was washed out with the rain. Christine and I joined the Craythornes, Easons, Bennetts and Glendays at the Woodend Beach domain for a picnic lunch under some trees. I understand that the rest of you sought shelter at the other Woodend domain for your lunch. We can’t always get it right. This month sees the boot fair on the seventeenth and the Annual Commercial Rally on the twenty fourth. At the beginning of March we have the Moped Run, Back Country run and Rear Wheel Brake Rally before the Annual Rally on the 10th/11th. March/April will be a busy time with many events on in this branch, and neighbouring branches so keep your eye on the Hub for details. For any members who may be interested, the March Executive meeting will be held in the Sudima Hotel at the airport on March 24. If you wish to register to attend, you must do so by 11 February. You will notice a few more of the dangerous old trees have been brought down, and others topped. Thanks to those members who have come out with chainsaws and taken away firewood and cleaned up the leftovers. We have an ambitious plan to upgrade the bar later this year, and some of you will have noticed the new refrigerated cabinet under cove just outside the bar area. We hope to commence the work during the winter period which is not so busy.

Chairman’s Report… Des Fowler our Parts Shed representative has been unwell for two to three months and has been in and out of hospital. Many members from around the country ring Des about availability of parts, and I have been concerned about the number of calls his wife is having to deal with. After contacting Des, he has agreed to the contact listed in the Hub being changed to Ross Butler and Brian Rogers. Please contact either of these members for Parts Shed enquires. Our best wishes go out to Des and Janet at this difficult time. Enjoy your vintage motoring and stay safe on the road. John Coomber - Chairman
Secretary’s Report Happy New Year to all, and I hope you have had a good break with family and friends these last two months. I will be away during the first three weeks of February but will be able to access my emails if you require forms etc. I will be attending The National Executive Meeting in Christchurch on the 24 th March as your branch delegate, if there are any matters you would like raised at this meeting please let me know before or speak to me at the March Noggin. This is the six monthly meeting between the National AGM’s. Remember I am usually available up by the stage at most noggins if you require forms or have any issues you wish to raise with your committee. (Don’t be surprised if I ask you to put it in writing) Regards Rod - Secretary

Club Captain’s Report Happy New Year to everybody! Already the first HUB of 2018 has been produced. Thanks to Brendon for his hard work. I wish to thank Greg & Gail Lamb and Ian & Marilyn McKinley for towing the toilets to “Glen Ovis” near Hawarden and “Kaiwara Homestead” near Culverden. Also a special thank you to Doc & Jan Sidey and Bruce & Audrey Johns for hosting us on the day and making us feel so welcome. A few vehicles travelled home via the Kaiwara Road and out to State Highway 1 as an alternative, however this route involved 25kms of shingle. The Bush Telegraph informed us that someone in a Model A lost a wheel! The Childrens’ Christmas Picnic was once again a great success - with the temperature hot enough to bake Santa in his suit. Consequently we all moved into the main hall while the children received their presents. The fire engine with the pump going was especially popular in the afternoon heat. Thanks a lot to Alan Parris and his team for organising the day. Andrew Morrison organised the Boxing Day Run and although the weather was a little moist the hall in the Woodend Domain provided a great sheltered lunch spot. A few of us got temporarily lost, however most made it to the lunch venue. There was a rumour of about 5 or 6 vehicles permanently lost and last seen heading for Woodend Beach. A green Chrysler comes to mind and possibly accompanied by a Morris Oxford and a Rover. Thank you Andrew for an enjoyable day out. The Picnic Run was organised by Terry McQuinn with the destination at Gate House Winery. From reports there was a good turnout and an enjoyable day was had by all those attending. Thanks to Terry for organising and Peter for hosting the run.
The entry forms for the Annual Commercial Rally, the Back Country Run and our main Annual Rally are in this HUB. 8
Club Captain’s Report... Continued… PLEASE:- Could those members who won the trophies last year make sure they are returned to Leigh Craythorne or taken back to the clubrooms on Noggin Night before the date of this year’s rally – DON’T FORGET! Also we could do with some volunteers to run the field trials on Saturday, 10 th March for the Annual Rally. Cheers Dave Inwood - Club Captain
Commercial Report The final Commercial Noggin for 2017 was hosted by Lyndsey and Myra Saunders, and despite the less than ideal weather there was a good turnout for a pre-Christmas catch up, fortunately Lyndsey is well equipped for wet weather barbequing. There were a number of interesting artefacts to look over and guess their purpose, and I’m sure the neighbours appreciated the demonstration of a recently restored mobile V8 powered fire pump. January’s noggin was held at Don and Judy Bennetts home on a very pleasant warm evening, thanks for opening up the sheds and providing an excellent supper, obviously from the good attendance people remembered to put it on the calendar. Tony and Leigh Craythorne are hosting the February Commercial Noggin on 15 February, at 34a Harrowdale Drive, Avonhead, all welcome to attend as usual. The Annual Commercial Rally will be held on 24 February, details and entry form in this issue of the Hub.

9-90s Report
9 - 90s
Hi to everyone. For Christmas lunch we had 80 people joining us at the Woolston Club. I can say it was a noisy and happy atmosphere and I think everyone had a good time. We had our usual raffle and with that raffle and the money we had left over after I bought the Christmas presents 20 people went home with $20.00. So we start again in February for next Christmas. We had one couple who, I think, had a memory loss and they left without paying their $50.00 for the meals. As the organiser, I had to pay the shortfall so if it was you, please give me a ring and I will be pleased to hear from you. If you remember and don‘t ring me, then don’t come back to the 9-90s. Next year we will reimburse the organisers of each trip for all their expenses and we will charge $2.00 per car (or $1.00 per person) to cover this.

Motorcycle Report It is just two months since the last motorcycle notes and only a dribble of water has flowed under the bridge. Past Events. 25 November - Fish & Chip Run. 8 or 9 bikes left Coffee Culture Main North Road for a run to the Fossil Point Café, Greta Valley. Essentially over the Waimak, left to Rangiora, Sefton and inland until hitting SH1 just before the Waipara turn-off, Waikari, and then to Greta Valley via Scargill Valley Road. Good day’s riding, fine weather. 13 December – Christmas Noggin. A good turnout of 50 booked in for the BBQ meal at the Barn. Bucketed down, but we were dry… Special Thanks to Alan and June Bland for once again providing a BBQ meal to be proud of! Well done, and Thank You Alan & June! 2 January 2018 – New Year’s Run. Small turn-out of 6 riders on 5 bikes left McLeans Island. Plan was to go to Hurunui Café for lunch; on the way stopped at Roy & Trevor of “Trev’s Trees” near Balcairn, to have a nosey at their bikes. Mainly triples, Triumph & BSA; but some other interesting stuff as well. While we were engrossed on their bikes, Joseph’s immaculate 1927 AJS proved to be a show-stopper with Ron and his mates! Ron & Trevor joined our run for the day, on their BSA Triples. On to Waipara, and a stop at Fred Hicks to view a retro caravan in the process of restoration, plus a garage with some interesting old cars. Arrived at Hurunui Cafe, place shut. Buggar. On to Culverden for lunch at the Red Post Café, run over, so home. Future Events. 15th February – Motorcycle Noggin. Note Change of DATE to Thursday. Looking at going to Smash Palace, their Biker’s Night. We went in November and it was very successful, so let’s do it again before the cooler weather settles in.
24th February – Fish & Chip Run. Depart PMH Cashmere Road 10.30 am, again; riders decide on destination. 12
Motorcycle Report... Advance Notice. 3rd March – Scooter & Moped Run. This is for Mopeds, and also small (under 250cc) motorcycles. Starts at McLeans Island, assemble 10.00am for a 10.30 am start. 3rd March – Bicycle Clip-on Run. This is a NEW EVENT on the motorcycle run calendar. Specifically this event is for bicycles with small (under 50cc) motors attached, of the type popular up until the 1950’s or 1960’s. Modern BMX bikes etc. fitted with the cheap Chinese motors that have been recently obtainable are specifically banned; bring these along and you will not be welcomed at all. They need to comply with the 30 year rule for club eligibility. Alister McKenzie (ph 03 355 4017 or email aj.de@xtra.co.nz) is organising, along with Doug Watkinson (email watkinsonfam3@gmail.com). If you have one of these Clip-on bicycles then here is an event JUST FOR YOU. Alister is keen to get a Clip-on group going, similar to Royce’s VOG group. See elsewhere for more details.
14th March – Motorcycle Noggin. Not decided yet, notice in next month’s Hub. 17th – 18th March – Jim Toohey Motorcycle Run. This year hopefully will be going to Reefton, but suitable accommodation is proving difficult to find. If we do need to change destinations you will be advised in the March Hub. Whatever, probably going over Arthurs Pass and back via Lewis, but more details later. Mike Glenday is organising.
Working Bee. Some trees have been topped and cut down, at the Island, and one has been grabbed as firewood for the Social Corner. No date decided yet, but when worked out you will be advised by an email send-out for volunteers to come out and cut up/split firewood, and have a general tidy-up. The corner is running out of firewood so here is an opportunity to replenish supplies. That is about the lot for now, keep the rubber to the road, and enjoy brilliant summer riding weather!
Cheers, CML. 13

December 2017 Noggin Display December’s Noggin Display was, Motorcycles for the M/C Annual Rally. Once again these M/Cs made a Great display. Thank you to all members who displayed their motorcycles and Les Freeman who organised it. Whenever there is a display of “winners” from a past Rally, I will get in touch with you prior to the Noggin Night, to see if you are available to display your vehicle, if you are a winner and were not contacted, it was because I have already obtained the numbers for the display. There are only 3 or at the most 4 spaces to fill in the hall, unfortunately we don't have room for all the “winners.”
Future Noggin Displays. March: April:
Winners (some) from the Vintage Annual Rally. Winners (some) from the Canterbury VCC Annual Rally.

Velosolex Owners Group... (VOG’s)
Our run this time took us around the Heathcote Stream via Ashgrove, Waimea & Eastern Terraces, a run we’ve done before and is a very enjoyable one although the roads certainly haven’t improved at all, crikey they’re full of potholes. Once crossing St Martins Rd we were on Riverlaw Tce and heading off onto a walking track that we “share” but this time there was a slight hold up. The children from nearby Opawa School had a swimming day at Waltham Pool so it was quite a hoot to stop and let them all through, lots of “hi fives” and smiles from these youngsters and plenty of questions about our “bikes” and “my Dad’s got a motorbike” statements. Once the coast was clear of the little “kiddies” we were off again around Riverlaw and into Hansen Park for a peaceful jaunt, only one walker through here and my word what a funny look VOG 1 got as he slowly passed her by! The eventual end for the morning run was at the Brickworks on Centaurus for our
lunch stop. The afternoon saw us heading back to our vehicles again via a similar route. Once again John McIntyre VOG 13’s bike ended up on the backup trailer, I think John might be ready to take a cigarette lighter to the infernal thing!! Hoping all our avid readers had a great Christmas and are now looking forward to a healthy & happy 2018. Royce VOG1

Ford V8 Trailer Pump While showing a neighbours friend my 1939 Ford V8 car some years go, he mentioned that it was a shame that he had wasting in his yard a Ford V8 Fire Trailer Pump. Someone had dismantled it some years before, then got sick of it and left it there to rust and deteriorate in the open yard. Nobody was very interested in putting it back together again and he did not have the time or inclination. He would like it to go to a good home, and if I was interested I could come and have a look to see if it was suitable for restoration. You have to follow up these leads quickly, so as soon as possible I went to view the remains. After viewing it, as far as I could work out most of the main parts were there, but all of the hoses, nozzles and fittings were missing. The tyres were flat and perished, various parts were spread around the yard, the paint was very faded, and the radiator tank was full of holes. A favourable rate for the purchase of the unit was agreed to and the next weekend I borrowed a large trailer to bring it home. It was nearly four years before I had enough time to consider starting the restoration of it. I started by putting it back together temporarily to see what was there. Surprisingly most of the parts were there and only had to be sorted out. So with the help of a few friendly experts it was put back together. Some temporary electric wiring fitted, fuel in the tank and I managed to get the engine started and ran it for a short spell. This gave my spirits a bit of a lift,so I completely dismantled the unit, except for the engine and pump which were extremely heavy to lift. The wheels, guards, engine side panels and trailer chassis were all sent to be sandblasted and then sent to the panel and paint shop for panel beating and painting. I was thinking of having a go at the painting myself but when you think of the problems of spray painting at home, middle of winter, outside with undercoat and red paint flying around at the back of a house on a residential section in town. I am glad I did not take the task on. (So was my wife!). All I had to do at the panel beaters was to select the red paint colour (there are thousands of REDS available) and pay the money for them to complete the task. Very easy!
After bringing home all the flash shiny painted parts I started the reassembly. This took me some time, as it was harder than I thought it would be. But I got there in the end. I enjoy putting clean painted bits back together, but I sure do not like the dirty boring job of cleaning everything up, but it has to be done by someone. Finally I had it reassembled enough to ask a mate to help get the electrics sorted out so it would start. When this was completed fuel, oil, water were added plus a battery and after a few hiccups the engine started and ran Ok. From disassemble to present condition took me 7 months mostly outside over the winter.

I worked very hard on this to get it ready in the last fortnight before the Ford V8 Clubs November 2017 Annual Rally and when I arrived at the start it drew some attention. I have not fitted any mufflers to the engine yet and it has only short pipes so it makes a considerable lovely loud noise at the moment. Other car clubs were at the start of our rally and the noise of a flat head V8 running on straight pipes sure brought the men over to see what was going on. I still have a lot of work to do on this unit, as I have no hoses or fire fittings to finish it off. If anyone can help with these I will be very grateful. I have disconnected the drive shaft between the engine and pump at the moment, as it is not good practise to run the pump dry. A clutch system to overcome this problem is being investigated.
Just a few notes about these fire pumps. In the Second World War New Zealand was very short on fire fighting equipment and with the threat of the Japanese bombing our cities and towns something had to be done. The Colonial Motor Company in Wellington built 3500 of these Trailer Pumps and 1800 were positioned at many places around New Zealand especially in seaside towns and cities. The rest went to allied forces abroad. A 500 GPM pump was fitted to a 100 Hp Ford V8 engine with cooling coming from the water pump to the radiator tank. No fan was fitted and no cores were in the radiator which was only a water tank shaped like a radiator. The unit was mounted on a trailer so could be towed by any car available when required. I plan to take this unit to displays and shows around the country to show others who may not have seen one before. Thank you to everyone that assisted with advice, skills and parts. Lyndsey Saunders.

Homestead Run - November 2017 It had been a very long time since I have been on a Homestead Run! The rally started at South Eyre Road, Clarkville. It looked great with a paddock full of over 100 cars – all makes and models. We turned left out of the gate and went through Ohoka, Rangiora, Ashley, Sefton, Balcairn and the back roads coming out onto the main highway at Waipara. We travelled through Waikari and out the back of the Hawarden area arriving at Doc & Jan Sidey’s homestead “Glen Ovis” for morning tea. Doc gave an interesting talk on the property. His prize winning Corriedales were on view in a pen and his sheepdogs were making friends with the visitors. I couldn’t get over how deep and soft the wool was. We travelled through Masons Flat, Medbury and Culverden to Bruce & Audrey Johns’ homestead “Kaiwara” for lunch. Bruce gave an interesting talk on the property. We looked through the beautiful entranceway in the house then outside to the old dairy shed and outbuildings. Bruce also opened his art gallery in Culverden for us to view the art works. We went home via the shingle alternate route (Kaiwara Road). One of our Model A members lost a wheel en route - thanks to John Gregan for his rendition of Kenny Rogers’ “You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel” to keep the spirits up! (And the young guys who stopped and helped put it back on). A lovely day out on two lovely properties – thanks to the owners and to the organisers. Wendy Cooper

2018 Picnic Run to Gatehouse Wines FROM THE PASSENGER SEAT Approximately 28 cars assembled at VCC Clubrooms for a 10.30am start for the first run for 2018. We left on an awesome 21 degree morning - amazing after the storms and high winds earlier. Heading to Halswell Junction Road via Pound Road we entered the new Waterloo Business Park. Very impressive area with buildings of an extremely high standard. After wending our way through various crescents and avenues we continued on to Waterloo Rd, into Barters Rd, Maddison and Kirk Rds then left at Newtons Rd and past the Women's Prison with an instruction "visiting hours are posted on the gate!!." We travelled through the Weedons and West Melton area passing Tresillian Vineyard, Melton Estate Vineyard and through the new West Melton Subdivisions. We then Crossed the Main West Coast Road and traversed Weedons Ross Road, crossing Halkett Road into Langdales Road passing Langdales Vineyards and arriving at Gatehouse Winery and Vineyard in Jowers Road for our picnic lunch in the shaded areas of some lovely large old trees. At the lunch stop we found that 12 more cars and passengers had driven directly to the venue . We were treated to an interesting variety of veteran, vintage and post vintage cars it was nice to be able to look at the assembled cars as the veteran cars are not seen at general rallies and they are very pretty and interesting to look at and have the owners talk about the restoration and skills required to drive these lovely old survivors. Gatehouse Wines is a private winery where grapes are crushed and stored and then bottled for the owner and for other small vineyard owners. The owner Peter Gatehouse has made some of the equipment necessary for the above tasks. Thanks to Peter for accommodating us all in pleasant peaceful surroundings. Great to see a good turnout. Thanks also to Terry McQuinn for a very pleasant day and the easy to read instructions in the larger print. Bev Crew
