Chairman’s Report Welcome to the 2019 motoring year. The weather has finally come right, but now the radiators are boiling in the high temperatures. I hope you all had a good holiday break, and I know many enjoyed the Boxing Day run and the picnic run, thanks to the organisers. I want to thank those who helped with the Children’s Christmas picnic, and carried on for me after I was taken home ill on the day. I spent the next month recovering from a nasty virus. This month we have the Boot Fair on 16th and the Commercial Annual Rally on 23rd. Most of you will have received a message in January advising that the Annual Rally will be held on 3031 March this year instead of 10 February. We are grateful that Katrina and her family offered to organise this event at such short notice. However, the holiday shutdown and time constraints meant that the original February date was not possible. We will ensure that this event is scheduled later in next year’s calendar. At the December meeting I witnessed some boorish behaviour and unacceptable comments directed at the branch committee generally and some individual members. Some members approached me and apologised for the behaviour they had witnessed. I wondered what some of our visitors may have thought about our branch. We understand that some were disappointed about the uncertainty over the annual rally, but the abusive comments from older members who should know better are not acceptable. All members of your committee work hard to administer this branch and co-ordinate the large number of activities available to members. They are all volunteers and have family and work commitments outside of this branch. We cannot always please everyone, but we work hard to satisfy the majority of member’s wishes. What we don’t need is the GROM syndrome (grumpy old members), putting younger members off joining our committee or volunteering to help organise events for members. A little kindness and respect for those who do the work would be appreciated. I am proud of the achievements of this committee over the past couple of years including the changes to the content and delivery of the Hub, which has caused some controversy. I remind members to look up as you drive out of our club grounds at the words inscribed above the entrance. Those who do not move forward drift backwards. These prophetic words have remained above the gate for many years, and now and then members should be reminded of them. We cannot remain in the past no matter how tempting it may be. Fortunately we enjoy the support and assistance of a large number of members who volunteer and just get on with whatever needs to be done. You know who you are, and we all appreciate you. Ask yourself, “am I becoming a GROM or can I make a positive contribution to support my branch?” 6
Chairman’s Report... To borrow from a famous JFK quote from 56 years ago, “Ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your club.” On a positive note, I am very pleased to advise that young George Kear has been appointed to the national management committee and his expertise and enthusiasm will be a great help to the national body. Fortunately George has advised that he wishes to remain on our committee to assist, but we will have to replace him as PV Convenor at the AGM in June. Also, Dave Inwood will be stepping down as Club Captain to concentrate on Swap Meet duties. I want you all to give some thought to whether you or someone you know might be prepared to stand for these positions. You have over four months to think about this, so we do not have a panic in June. And remember, if we do not have a Club Captain, our events calendar will be seriously compromised. Rod Thrower will attend the March Executive Meeting in Wellington, so if there is any issue you want raised, please send him an email. John Coomber

Secretary’s Report
Happy New Year to all, and I hope you have had a good break with family and friends these last two months. I Noticed some members of the Motor Cycle section have been busy over Xmas / New Year, tidying up garden area's of the grounds. We thank you and anybody else who put in time and effort on these hot days to keep the grounds etc looking trim. I will be away during the first three weeks of February so won't be at Feb Noggin but will be able to access my emails if you require forms etc. Some are avaliable at the magazine rack in the foyer or on the notice board. I will be attending The National Executive Meeting in Wellington on the 23rd March as your branch delegate, if there are any matters you would like raised at this meeting please let me know before or speak to me at the March Noggin. This is the six monthly meeting between the National AGM’s. Remember I am usually available up by the stage at most noggins if you require forms or have any issues you wish to raise with your committee. (Don’t be surprised if I ask you to put it in writing)
I have just spent the last couple of weeks trying to contact 60 of our Branch members who for what ever reason are not financial. This job is made a lot more difficult by people who don't keep their details up to date at National HQ. Phone numbers and emails that are no longer active, please make sure you notify Myself or National office of changes. Subscription were due end of Oct 2018 and invoices were sent out end Sept with a reminder in Nov so these are now two and half months over due so you would have noticed you did not receive your Dec/ Jan Beaded Wheels. Subscriptions not paid at the time of the National Half year Exc Meeting 23rd March will be removed from the Data base and will have to reapply for membership (losing any continuity of membership). Congratulations to those involved in the Picnic Run in January, what a wonderful day with the added bonus of our own private Warbirds over Cass, Thank you to all involved including Dave Cooper, Richard Spencer Bower, Lesley & Lou McAllister, Dave Richard and the Pilots who gave up their time to entertain us. A big thank you to the other members who have stepped up to Run or assist in the running the Boxing Day Run,Annual Rally, Back Country Run, Rear Wheel Brake Rally under the watchful eye of The Club Captain, who by the way could do with an assistant or two to share the load with. These assistants are not required to attend Committee Meetings but can if they wish. All Members of the committee work as volunteers and hold positions as conveners of all Sub sections of the Branch as well as tirelessly trying to run this huge Branch of approximately 1300 members in a business like manner. 8
Secretary’s Report... We are lucky that we have a team of beavers who work away in the parts shed and on the grounds for hours on end even when we are all out enjoying the rallies on Saturdays & Sundays. As now is the time we should all be thinking about the nominations for AGM in June maybe it is time a few of the 1300 could think about having more involvement as fresh new ideas from some of our newer younger members are never without merit. Rod Thrower Branch Secretary
Club Captain’s Report Hopefully everyone enjoyed their break and are all enthusiastically looking forward to our busiest time of the year - rallywise. Andrew Morison organized the Boxing Day Run. We started at New Brighton Beach taking a tour around the hill side of the city and ending with a picnic in West Melton Domain. An enjoyable run and a warm fine afternoon. Most of those attending not wanting to go home. Thank you Andrew. The Picnic Run was organized by Dave Cooper and Richard Spencer-Bower. Thanks to Lesley and Lou McAllister for their afternoon hospitality and air show. Thanks also to Dave and Richard. Report elsewhere in Hub. Katrina Shaw is organizing the Annual Rally which has been postponed to the 30th and 31st March 2019. Entry form in this Hub. Andrew Mehrtens is organizing the Back Country Run - entry form also in this Hub. Graeme Sword has offered to organize the Rear Wheel Brake Rally. Cheers. Dave Inwood
If you have an article you would like published, a funny story or some photos of a recent event or rally you could share, please send them through to the Editor for inclusion in a future edition of The Hub. 9

Motorcycle Report Hi All, well; the start of a new year beacons, and would you believe it, the first month is just about over already… Brilliant motorcycling weather with one or two events so let’s get on with the report. Past Events. 12 December – Christmas Noggin Night, at the Barn, BBQ format. A very successful night, about 45 people enjoyed the DIY BBQ that was put on by Kurt and Sharon Ebrecht. Many Thanks to Kurt and Sharon, particularly as they put their hands up at the last moment. 2nd January – New Year M/C Run. About 15 or so started the day at McLeans Island’s Motorcycle Corner for a run through the 3 gorges, lunch at Oxford, and home again. Very nice day, overcast but warm and comfortable on the bike. Lunch at the Oxford WMC, and on the way home some stopped in Rangiora to view a shed full of interesting blokey stuff. I and 3 other bikes missed this, got stopped by the traffic lights and when they were green the rest of the group were nowhere to be seen. 26 January – Fish & Chip Run. 13 bikes started from outside PMH for a run out to Aylesbury Corner, to Lincoln, coffee at Gebbies Garden Café, Gebbies Pass, Summit Road, then to the home of Kurt Ebrecht to enjoy a BBQ that he was putting on. Unfortunately the fuel tap on my bike fell apart which necessitated a dash to Rolleston to refuel, so my trip to Lincoln was the “off route” way… Mind you, mine was not the only bike to have “gremlins” exposed on this the last shake-down run prior to the National Motorcycle Rally in February!
Future Events. 13 February – Motorcycle Noggin. This will be out at the Island’s Motorcycle Corner 15 – 17 February – National Motorcycle Rally, Blenheim. Quite a contingent from Canterbury will be attending. 18 – 21 February – NMC’s After Match Function – the Hub Rally of Local Interest around Blenheim. This will finish in Hanmer Springs Thursday night 21st February. 3 March – Moped Run, Kurt Ebrecht is the organiser. See elsewhere for details, entry forms, etc. 9th March – Clip-on Run. Organised by Alistair McKenzie. Start is at 75 Fountains Road, see elsewhere for more details. 13 March – Motorcycle Noggin, as for February this will be at McLeans Island’s Motorcycle Corner. 16 – 17 March – Jim Toohey Memorial Motorcycle Run. Traditionally an over-nighter, this is ADVANCE notice of the event coming up in March. That’s it for this month, plenty on over the next couple of months so keep the rubber to the road! Cheers, CML

A Note from the Editor
Thank you to those Members who decided to write in and voice their concerns about the Branch magazine, The Hub. These letters have been put to the committee for discussion and the committee has decided to stand firm on it’s July 2018 decision that: • All electronic copies of The Hub will be published in full colour - both emailed and online versions • Any printed copies of The Hub will have the Cover pages in full colour, with the inside pages being reserved for those companies who advertise and support the club financially in this way • All other pages to be printed in Black and White Please feel free to write in with any helpful suggestions for our Club magazine, but I ask you to keep your letters polite and informative. Remember, it is possible to pat people on the back too, when they do a good job. We are volunteers, working for the good of all club members (where possible). If you feel you can help the branch, then put your hand up at the AGM and do so please. We are always looking for those willing to get stuck in. P.S. (an aside) At the National AGM Meeting last year, we were the envy of other VCC Branches for the quality and content of our Branch Magazine.

December & January’s Adventures
Firstly a Happy Healthy 2019 to all the avid readers of the VOG’s latest adventures. You are in for a bonus this time with no Hub for the month of January you need to know of the latest happenings from both December and January. Oh no - I can hear you saying not 2 months of dribble! December’s run was a “long distance” event with some 40km’s covered leaving from John Thomson’s (VOG 15) place in Sawyers Arms Rd. A short distance was made from here to our member Noel’s home in Redwood to view his collection of mopeds and a work in progress on a 3.4ltr Mk2 Jaguar. What a fantastic restorer Noel is he has a Cucciolo bought way back in the year Nuts’n’bolts from the original Christchurch agents that has been restored back to it’s gleaming better than new condition. Also seen was a “Ducati 55” moped that is currently in the process of a full makeover, even to the saddle that encouraged Noel to learn some new skills with leather work he has recovered it himself making the stitching look authentic as though it had been on the bike from new. New chrome rims and spokes set this Ducati off really well, we’re looking forward to seeing this out on the roads in time to come. From Redwood it was off on the journey to head out past Willowbank and through to Northwood to pass over the Main North Rd lights onto Radcliffe Rd and along here towards Hawkins Rd where you get a glimpse of all the work going on with the Cranford St extension section of the Northern Motorway link up, crikey this is going to be great for getting the traffic flow going that is coming from our Northern areas of Rangiora and other outlying districts. Eventually we hit Lower Styx Rd and it was a long slow plug along here through Brooklyns and all the red zoned land along here. So exhausting was this trek that a short stop was required along the way to stretch the legs and exercise the gluteus maximus muscles, what a relief this was as Lower Styx Rd just seems to go on & on & on at 25kmh but we eventually made it to our very welcome lunch stop at the “Mak Hotel Bridgend. After the usual pie and a pint and interesting banter we hit the Old Main Nth Rd through to Chaneys Cnr and around into Marshlands Rd to brave the traffic and cross over to Guthreys Rd – whew we all made that bit safely (scary stuff it is ). It was then a quick jaunt to the Main Nth Rd via Radcliffe Rd taking in one of the new bridges on Belfast Rd (hadn’t seen that before), round through Regents Park back through Redwood and right into Sawyers Arms Rd to the start/finish line at VOG 15’s. Another fantastic day enjoyed by all.

Velosolex Owners Group... (VOG’s) JANUARY 9TH The first run for 2019 and VOG 1 of little faith thought that most members would still be away and it would be a small turnout but no we had 12 members turn up at the start on a very blustery NNE day with high temps expected. This time we ventured off on the Southern Motorway cycle and walking track starting by the new Wigram Fire station in Wilmers Rd heading off along here toward Aidanfield to make a stop at the new Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub. What an amazing complex this is located in the area near the A&P Showgrounds and as luck would have it while we were admiring the track & field area the Sports Manager of the facility happened to turn up and gosh was he ever so informative explaining all about the set up there at Nga Puna Wai. It’s sure is a magnificent modern replacement for QE 2 park. They tested the facility back in early December with the primary schools’ end of year athletics event with some 5,000 people in attendance. Pupils, teachers mums’ n’ dads etc all went well they even had a medical emergency where someone had put a hip out of joint and St John were called upon to send an ambulance to the rescue this worked very well with ease of access to the grounds. There are several international track and field events planned to be held here over the coming year. Also included here are 2 all weather hockey fields where the Black Sticks will be playing in February and March against Great Britain and Germany and the new rugby league grounds. Well worth a visit by all to see what the Council have facilitated for the city. It was then back on to the cycleway heading towards Lincoln Rd via the A&P grounds which some of the lads had never actually been through so were quite amazed at the size of it all. The traffic on Lincoln Rd was the next hurdle as we had to cross over this to Domain Tce no accidents or incidence were reported as everyone turned up at the lunch stop on Selwyn St at a quaint little tavern the “Celtic Arms” good food and good chatter before setting out on the homeward journey also along the Southern M/way bike trail. By this time the wind had changed to nor’west and the temps had climbed up but what a magic ride back with the wind behind us. We made great haste this time crossing over the Wigram Rd bridge with break neck speeds by some of 35kmh on the downward slope. Then headed through the Wigram Skies subdivision out on to Awatere Rd through another cycle trail and back to Wilmers Rd and the final lap to the finish. Gosh Christchurch sure has a great number of fantastic cycleways around the city now. Makes life safer for VOGGING. Royce VOG1

Picnic Run January 6th 2019 We have all been on Picnic Runs in the past, they are normally an enjoyable day out with nofrills, a natter with friends at the start, a short drive to a suitable venue, a bit more nattering, lunch and away home. Today we were in for a surprise. Starting at Cutler Park, with pleasant weather, with a southerly expected later in the day. 28 cars headed west, over the *Waimakariri Gorge bridge*, following the interesting, smaller, not often visited back roads, northeast of the Waimakariri Gorge. Some were sealed, while others were smooth dusty shingle, passing through View Hill, Coopers Creek, heading north via the back streets of Oxford and to Bennetts, arriving at the property of Lou and Lesley Mc Alister, who were our hosts for the day. During the day both Lou & Lesley went out of their way to make us welcome. Part of the surprise I mentioned earlier was, that we were not only visiting a well-maintained property with a beautiful garden where Lesley, the owner invited us to lunch in the shade, there also was a car, tractor & stationary engine collection. Parked in front of an aircraft hangar, which had been set up with numerous seats for us to use, was a display of a Model A, an early Mazda, Ford Fairlane, a John Deere Model 70, 2 cylinder Diesel, a large 5 cylinder National generator, ex NZRAF Wigram Base, an impressive quiet running Black Stone, 1905 large stationary engine, which ran the shearing shed at the relatives of Richard Spencer- Bowes (one of today’s Rally organisers) and is stored at the Oxford Museum. There were also numerous other tractors and memorabilia on display in the main hangar. Lou our host, went the extra mile and gave us a talk on the farm, as well as all these implements, including starting them up. There is a large extension on the side of the Hangar, housing many interesting cars. The highlight of the day was yet to come, as you don’t have Aircraft Hangar without an aeroplane, Lou & Lesley own an ex RAF 1946 De Havilland Chipmunk, powered by a 145HP 6.2 ltr Gypsy Major engine, similar the engine that powers the Stanton Special. After lunch Lou & Lesley had organised our own mini air show, “Fly In”, put on by 5 aeroplanes. They were, 2 replica Mustangs owned by father and son Ivan & Andrew Campbell from Loburn, one was powered by a Rotax 100 Hp and the other, a 265HP V6 Honda engine. Gary Potterell from England owned the replica Spitfire, powered by a 200 HP Jabiru engine. Charlie Draper flew his Auster, powered by a 135HP Gypsy Major and Fred Bull was the pilot of his Piper. This “Mini Air Show” was something special. What a great day full of surprizes, I am sure that everyone including the ladies, some who were given gardening tips by our host Lesley, really enjoyed the day and went home with many memories.

Picnic Run January 6th 2019... A special thanks to Lou & Lesley for organizing the Mini Air Show and sharing their property with us and all the pilots who took part. Thank You. Also thank you to Richard Spencer- Bowes and Dave Cooper for organising the event, it was much more than Picnic Run! Even the southerly stayed away. Normally a picnic runs do not have an entry fee, but because we were going to a private home, the club provided a mobile toilet, that is why there was an entry fee to cover this cost. Some Interesting Information about the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge and the area. * • • •
•
From 1872-1877 a flat bottom punt, with side railings that could take 200 sheep or 8 horses and a wagon, was used for transport across the river. The punt operator lived on the northern bank. The 33 m high bridge was completed in 1877. The area was known as, “Coldstream Pass”. In 1884 the railway between Oxford and Sheffield was completed and the bridge, was now road & rail. Mainly freight was carried, however, many well patronised one day train excursions were run from Oxford to Arthurs Pass. Both sides of the river, had a steep slope and because the train was so heavy, half the carriages were left at the Gorge Bridge, while the engine took the other half to Sheffield and then returned to get the rest of the carriages. The same happened on the return journey, but this time, on the northern side of the bridge, a long day! The Railway across the bridge was closed in 1930. “The City of Christchurch Electric Power Board 1902”, were looking at electrifying Christchurch and one of their proposals was, the Waimakariri River Gorge. A total of 5 hydro Dams were proposed, one a 50m high dam, 13kms up from the bridge, there would be an 8kms long lake, ideal for water sports, picnic areas, as well as a “Recuperating Hospital” plus 3 other dams further up the Gorge and 1 by the bridge. These dams were strongly opposed by the Government and were never built.

Situations Vacant—Swap Meet Roles The Swap Meet committee needs a replacement Sites Coordinator to take over from Kevin Clarkson, who has enjoyed the role for the last few years. Reasonable computer skills are required to maintain the site register and spreadsheet and manage the bookings and payments. Most of the work occurs during Swap Meet, but enquiries do continue during the year from time to time. Good communication skills and a certain amount of diplomacy would also be useful. The pay is rubbish, but the satisfaction of a successful Swap Meet and working alongside a dedicated group of new friends is a reward that will more than compensate for your time and effort. If you're interested, please give Kevin Clarkson a call on 021 0270 6525. We also need a Workforce Coordinator who can take over from Ian McKinlay, who has championed this role for more years than he can remember. Ian would like to phase a new person into this role so he can step aside this coming year. Again, most of the work is immediately before and after Swap Meet, and is all about ensuring the grounds and basic infrastructure is set up on time and ready to roll come Swap Meet weekend, and then everything is packed up again and put away afterwards. Contact Ian for further information on 03 349 6951 or Colin Hey on 03 359 8737.

Rear Wheel Brake Rally Sun 10th March 2019
Starting at NEW WORLD car park Charles Street Kaiapoi (First right over Bridge) Time 10:00am with vehicles leaving around 10:30am A short easy drive to the Weka Pass Glenmark Railway Station, Glenmark Drive Waipara, all sealed roads away from the Main roads as much as possible. This will be the BYO lunch stop beside the vehicles or on the railway station depending on the weather. After lunch we are trying to organise a visit to the railway workshops but this all depends on the members of the railway being there (Health & Safety regulations). Our next visit is about 12 miles away with ½ mile of shingle, this may be of more interest to our lady members as we will be going to an Olive and Lavender Farm where the owners use these products to make a large range of homemade oils, soaps, shampoos, creams candles etc. These will be on display and for sale to anyone who would like to purchase them. (This is the afternoon tea stop, Tea & coffee supplied).
Then it will be time to head to the finish for the Dinner at Pineacres Restaurant located at the start of the Kaiapoi Motorway, arriving in time for a 4:30pm early Light Dinner. (approximately 34 miles there and 36 miles home) (A shorter route using main Roads if needed)

ANZAC Day Run Thursday 25th April 2019 This is the second year that this event will be held and once again we are very fortunate to have a partner in Dutton Garage (est 1911). The run will be preceded by a public display of the vehicles in the Darfield recreation ground carpark from 10am to 11am so please assemble from 9:30 when your days rally pack will be available. Please park where instructed. The route travels on secondary roads (no shingle, easy veteran motoring) through the Malvern District and passes the War Memorials of Darfield, Sheffield, Hororata, Glen Roy and Glentunnel. Feel free to stop and pay your respects with a poppy at each. Distance is approx 50 miles (80ks) The featured vehicles, as before, are those built during the war years and a Duttons medal will be presented to vehicles 100 years old and over. (VIC is required) All club eligible vehicles are welcome with those produced after 1945 participating in a support category. A commemorative number plate, also supplied by Duttons, will be given to all participants and the Malvern News will be including an entry list of pre 1945 vehicles along with the route for the information of Malvern residents. Lunch is being supplied at the new Hororata Cafe at the Hororata Golf Club where the vehicles will again be on display for the residents to come and view. From the Parts Shed It is with great sadness that we record the passing of Brian Rogers. Brian joined the Club in 1979 and has been a very active member of the Parts Shed team for many years in addition to being a regular participant in Branch events and rallies along with Carol in their Veteran Buick, Mini or Austin 7 Chummy. All of these have been beautifully restored by Brian and are always maintained and presented in immaculate condition. Of recent times, Brian has been working on an E Type Jaguar roadster which he had virtually finished and was awaiting the final sign-off in the compliancing process for it to go on the road. I believe that he had actually test driven it around the block and was very pleased with it. In the Parts Shed, Brian was usually available to open the shed on the Sundays it is scheduled to open and ensured that it was open on the occasions when members of the small Sunday team were on rallies or unable to attend. Brian was also usually found behind the counter on Noggin Nights and every Wednesday afternoon after retiring and was always very helpful towards people looking for parts. The Parts Shed team are going to miss Brian, he was always relaxed and didn’t get cross with people, we enjoyed his company, his sense of humour and it has been a great pleasure working with him. We extend our sincere sympathy to Brian’s wife Carol and son Warren and his family on their loss. Ross Butler
