Chairman’s Report Thanks to all who attended and supported the AGM in June. Kevin has reported a successful financial year. The financial accounts were updated a week before the AGM as a result of the Vero payment for the damage to our fire engine being received. Vero wrote the vehicle off as it was too difficult for them to arrange repairs. The damage was restricted to the engine bay and front of the cab and front guards plus wiring and carburettor. We were given the option of buying the vehicle back, and this was agreed to by your committee, as there is plenty of money from the generous payout to restore the vehicle, and we have the resources within our branch to achieve this. Your committee has been returned unchanged. The Parts Shed representative is now Ross Butler, and the Motorcycle section representative is Phil Jeeves. Leigh Craythorne has completed her year as past President and can now enjoy a break from the burden of committee duties after serving well in excess of twenty years in various roles. A couple of changes to the proposed Calendar of Events at the AGM. The 2018 Awards Dinner is to be held on Saturday 22 September and the Clipon Run will now not be combined with the Moped Run on 3 March 2019, but will be held on Saturday 9 March 2019. Dave Inwood and I have discussed the Women Drivers Rally which was such a success last year, and decided that it should be run annually combined with the Under 25 Drivers Rally. This is short notice, but the entry form will be out in the August Hub, and you will have two weeks notice to enter. Irishman Rally was another great success this year, and sadly a trip to hospital meant I missed it. Our National President and her husband took our Plymouth and enjoyed the rally so much that they are bringing their Chev next year. On the Sunday, while fording a river, the Plymouth gearbox fell apart and the car came home on a trailer. I am very grateful to Dave Inwood for towing our car home and delivering Diane and Geoff safely to us on the Monday, and also to North Island Club Captain Kaaren and Jim Smylie who lend their car trailer to Dave to get our car home. VCC members are certainly a wonderful bunch of friends when trouble strikes. John Coomber 6
Secretary’s Report Hi all, by the time you read this the AGM would have come and gone and the committee will be feeling good about the way they, as a team, have managed the affairs of the Branch throughout the year. We are still looking for a Assistant Club Captain or two to help out Dave Inwood on the many tasks he's required to do through the year. I have noticed in another branch magazine that their branch has 3 assistants and probably a quarter of our membership, so what about it, can we have a couple of mates step up and volunteer a bit of your time. On that note we could also do with a willing person to take on the important roll of Social Convenor where necessary and look after the supplies for the main hall kitchen cupboard. Please see myself or another committee member if you feel you would like to help. I had someone come up to me one Noggin night and said “having looked at the Hub on line recently, they had found it so easy to read as they could enlarge the print” Thinking about this I was wondering how feasible it would be at a future Noggin, using the big screen, for Brendon or someone computer savvy to bring the Hub up and give a demonstration again of these tricks as well as how to interact with things like rally entries. Busy month what with dealing with the police over stolen petrol pumps etc. I feel like a budding Detective. We can now all look forward to another year of interesting rallies and events and would love you all to get in behind and support the convenors in their endeavours to make these events a success. A big thank you to Annette Meikle and Nancy McSaveney and their helpers for serving and cleaning up after, the afternoon tea at the AGM, and thanks to Lynda Thrower for providing the Fresh Scones and Cream. Regards Rod (Sec)

Club Captain’s Report Our AGM held on Sunday 24th June is probably the main focus for the month as the winter weather closes in and curtails the motoring activities somewhat. Thank you to all those members who attended and voiced their ideas and opinions affecting the club’s future. The Irishmans Weekend was a success with interesting runs on both Saturday and Sunday. Thanks to James and Jane Webb and John Chamberlain for a well organised rally. I would also like to thank Baz & Lois Colley, Nick & Annette Harrison and Frosty, Bruce Burney, George Kear Snr, Peter Lee and Ivan Jonasen for backup duties over the weekend. Thanks also to Jim & Kaaren Smylie for the use of their trailer to retrieve the 1930 Plymouth.
However, the Restoration of the Year Run was very disappointing with 9 cars at the start and 7 only ending up at Cutler Park for judging and lunch, although some members went direct to the clubrooms. Maybe we need to rethink this format? Progress with the Bar alterations is moving along nicely . A special thanks to all those involved with this project, especially Graeme Arps and Mike Foster who have been on site all of the time work has been carried out.
The date for the Winter Run is Sunday, 29th July. However nothing has been organized at the moment, so it probably will be cancelled, or maybe, as its just a Picnic Run members could drive to Cutler Park and picnic in the hall . Wet or fine? Feedback please!! Phone 3274156. The Parts Shed will also be open on this morning. That’s it for now. Dave Inwood - Club Captain 8
Commercial Report Many thanks to the McClintocks for hosting the June Commercial Noggin, with a guided tour around Auto Restorations for a look at the wide range of cars in varying stages of disassembly and descriptions of the work in progress, and refreshments to end the evening. The July commercial noggin will be at Dave Cooper’s, 454 South Eyre Rd, on 3rd Wednesday as usual 18th July, look forward to seeing you there. Neil Shaskey - Commercial Convenor

9-90s Report
9 - 90s
Hi to you all Well, another wet and miserable day but we had 22 cars at the start and another few came to lunch at the Barn where Graeme Sword had a roaring fire going and scones, tea and coffee ready which was very welcome. Before lunch we took a quick trip to have a look at Graeme Trillo’s cars, a nice collection of American convertibles. What big garages you have to have. Thank you Graeme for your last minute co-operation and hospitality. We had planned to go to Waiau but that was cancelled because of the weather. We are intending to go there in February 2019 now. Thanks to the Meikles for a good day and for your donation to Nurse Maud. Are you thinking of your future too? July 11 Organiser Graeme Sword. Meet at the New World Supermarket, Kaiapoi carpark at 9.55am. When you arrive at the Marae don’t go in. Please wait until all are assembled and you are invited in and welcomed. It is going to be a great day. Colleen and I wish that we could be there too. August 8 Organiser Grant Lomax. Meet at the New World Supermarket, Halswell carpark, Nicholls Rd at 9.55am . We will have 2 bottles of wine for 2 vintage cars of the co-ordinator’s choice. September 12 Organiser Geoff Townsend. Meet at the Yaldhurst Hotel carpark at 9.55am. Don’t forget you name tag and please be considerate on the road.
Regards J K and the team

Motorcycle Report After noting earlier this week that we have yet to experience a frost, boy did the last few days remind us exactly which season has the power over the weather!! Decidedly cold, heavy frosts, and the usual biting sou’westerly weather! June is a very quiet month for motorcycle runs, only the Fish & Chip run is on the calendar this month. Probably just as well…
Past Events: 13th June – Noggin Night and AGM of the Motorcycle Section. After serving for 5 years as the Motorcycle Convenor Les Freeman has stepped aside, and Phil Jeeves was voted on in his place. Thanks Les, for your sterling service over the 5 years, and thanks for remaining on the committee. The existing committee less Kevin Stevenson (thanks Kevin for your input!) was re-elected, and a couple of newbies in Kurt Ebrecht and Graham Barnett were voted on. Congratulations to the new committee, we look forward to the programme for the next year or so. Two trophies were presented: • The Miles Trophy for the best performance on a BSA – Jens Christensen • The Triumph Trophy for the Best Performance on a Triumph – Dev Dhurvas. • A third trophy for the best performance on an Indian was not presented. Future Events: 30 June – Fish & Chip Run. Report on this next month. 1st July – Working Bee at the Social Corner, several large bales of pea straw is to be spread out over the gardens etc. that are under the guardianship of the Motorcycle Section. By the time you read these notes this will be in the past… 7 - 8 July – Mid Winter Run. This will be a run to Geraldine, staying at the Geraldine Heritage Hotel. By the time you see this entries for the run would have closed. Those going will meet at the Yaldhurst Tavern 10.15am for a 10.30 am start on Saturday for a run to Methven for lunch, then to a garage raid on the way to Geraldine via Mayfield. 11th July – Motorcycle Noggin. Nothing extra-ordinary planned, so will be at the Barn, McLeans Island. 28th July – Fish & Chip Run. Meet PMH 10.30 am for an 11.00 start. Riders decide on destination. 12
Motorcycle Report... 4th August – Round the Bays motorcycle run. This will start at the Woolston Working Men’s Club; meet 9.45am for a 10.00 am start. 8th August – Motorcycle Noggin. As the last couple of noggins have been out at the Island we will look for another meeting place for the August Noggin. As of writing this we are still looking, so we will advise via the email mail-out to motorcycle riders in a couple of weeks or so. That is about it for this month, keep warm and dry! Cheers, CML.

Over numerous years of producing the Hub, Selwyn was always approachable, helpful and prompt. He not only produced a quality magazine for us, but also supplied many of our Rallies with very generous sponsorship, at no cost; such as rally numbers & instruction sheets, windscreen stickers, posters, programs etc. Thank you Selwyn for all you have done for the Club. Copy Print is now in the good hands of Simon. 15
2018 Irishman Creek Rally
This year Irishman Rally was set to start in Oamaru on Sat 2nd June. The Majority of entrants travelled there on Friday and it was also the National Steam Punk Festival over the same weekend. Being there during Friday Afternoon was like a walk back in time to early London at the end of the 1800's, with the waterfront streets and stone building being a hive of activity on into the night. People dressed in weird and wonderful costumes everywhere. A visit to the Main Steam Punk Museum was a must see, followed by an evening of street entertainers including a Japanese Drumming Group, Fire Jugglers up and down the street and the usual food stalls amongst the old Oamaru Stone Buildings. From here it was time to pick up our Rally pack from one of the heritage hotels then onto the camp for a good night's sleep. Saturday morning required an 8am start and saw all 163 pre 1932 cars assemble at the local farmers market for a welcome from The Mayor. After a very brief briefing 400 plus people scrambled to the 90 mixed make cars, plus the 73 Model As of all types everywhere you looked. What a great sight. A few locals turned out to see us on our way. We headed out to the coast and along a back road for some miles admiring the view of the waves washing up on the beach. A turn inland taking us across farm land to the Whishaw 1909 shearing shed, through a ford then onto Tapui Homestead. A warning to fit chains now if needed, nobody was stopping so on we went past Dunmovin Homestead though another ford and onto Bushy Creek Road (No Exit) OH DEAR that's a worry an old stock track (No Exit )again. Entered Loch Lomond Station ( A Deer Farm) Warning close the gates. From here a very steep decent onto Earthquake Road (how appropriate) and on to Kurow for lunch at The Kurow Memorial Hall. 80 Miles down 93miles to go today providing we don't get lost. Our Prepaid lunch was served to us by the ladies and pupils of the Waitaki Valley School and consisted of a choice of three roasted meats, mutton, beef or pork, jacket potatoes' carrots, peas, pumpkin etc etc and buttered bread roll all followed by a hot drink cakes and slices to die for. Not a mean effort to feed 344 plus people streaming in constantly over a couple of hours.

2018 Irishman Creek Rally...
Afternoon run started by crossing the Waitaki River Bridge then the Hakataramea River Bridge. At this point we were redirected onto the Hakataramea Pass as time was against us. Nearing the summit we were meet by a very thick mist/ fog and the most amazing hoar frost which required a photo stop of the fences , bushes and Rose Hip berries, amazing. As it was a bit early for the sunset from the summit we continued on downward through many dry fords (seems to be FORDS everywhere) and out to Dog Kennel Corner. Some thought the better route was over McKenzie Pass. Cruise into Fairlie with a few cars not being able to get pass the Kimble without a refuel, but the majority making it to the Gladstone at some time during the evening for a lovely meal. Total today 173miles. On arriving back at camp the sounds of raucous singing coming from the kitchen required an investigation only to find the group of regular elderly gentlemen in fine form singing and chatting up a couple of young French Backpackers (no prizes for guessing the gender) and inviting them on the Trip of a lifetime tomorrow. Sunday Morning 8am very mild frost hardly noticed by the rabble assembled outside the Gladstone awaiting their briefing for today's run. Two young ladies noticed in the back of car grinning from ear to ear. Headed away towards Tekapo out of Fairlie turning off the main highway onto Spur Road nice steep climb to warm the car up. A lovely long drive through country side some of which I have never seen including places like Raincliff, Limestone Valley, Pareora,Esk Valley Rd, Backline Rd then turning into “Blue Cliffs Station”. At 10.15am we had a welcome from Members of the Rolleston Family who gave us a very interesting talk on the history of the homestead and farm though many generations then invited all present to view the inside of this amazing 1890 building, nine bed rooms ,servant quarters etc. The most interesting observation was all the original furniture and china, floor coverings and right down to, hanging in pride of place “the entrance hall” a long handled copper bed warmer. The original owners after building this amazing house travelled to England on their Honeymoon and bought back all the furniture, china, crystal, and Servants which included 5 gardeners to start their new life (no containers in those days).

2018 Irishman Creek Rally...
At 10.45am we left the homestead and travelled across the farm to the sign to direct us in single file to the top of the hills and on to the Airstrip. The trick here was to park as close as you could to the next car as we all had to assemble at the top before anybody could attempt the downward journey on the very narrow sometimes just grass track. Lucky there had been no rain that day or snow. After approx 100miles we were back in Fairlie for a well-earned hot lunch put on by by the Fairlie Kindergarten catering for 340 people, well done ladies you never fail to impress. After lunch we were invited to join in the bonfire and grasskana at “Strathconan Station (Pete's Patch) for some socialising and sharing of stories while others tried to outdo each other on the slippery grass. As the sun went down we retired back to the Fairlie Community Centre for nibbles, tea and coffee provided by the 'Silver Beats Leisure Marchers' and whatever liquid you had left over from the weekend. Prize giving was at 7pm with a large table of goodies for the lucky and not so lucky. The winner's trophy this year was awarded to Morrie Dunnage (Model A) with the runner up going to local man Reg Horner (Marmon) Well done to James & Jane and team for another amazing event and good luck to Morrie & Reg for next year. We will be there. Rod Thrower

Daffodil Rally for Cancer Sunday 26th August As part of a VCC National initiative to fundraise for the NZ Cancer Society, the VCC Canterbury Branch is once again running a special and open event on Sunday 26th August. As happened last year, this will be one of dozens of similar events held around the country on the same day. All veteran, vintage and classic vehicle owners, including individuals, and member of ALL motoring clubs (including Custom and Hot-Rod Clubs) will be invited to participate in what was last year one of the largest old-vehicle runs the city has seen. As the host club, it would be great if we could once again lead the way and have a great turn-out of members and vehicles, so please plan to take part on the day and enjoy a great day out. Assemble at the VCC grounds at McLeans Island between 10.00 and 10.30am for registration in the clubrooms. Devonshire teas (or coffee) will be available there at $5.00 per head. Registration will cost $10.00 per car. After registration you can depart on your choice of run: • Car Museum run • Motorcycle museum run • Garden Run • Art Gallery Run • Touring Run (for those who just like to drive on scenic free-running open roads) Each run will involve no more than 1 hour of driving (Touring Run will be 1.5 hours). Entry to any venues will be at discounted rates, and will need to be paid for separately. In all cases entry to venues is optional – you only need to stop and visit if you want to. Some will be free or entry by donation. All runs return to and finish at the VCC grounds by around 1.00pm. A barbeque lunch will be run by a service club, with proceeds also going to the Cancer Society. BYO lunch is another option. All vehicles will be lined up for display, to which the general public will be invited. A brief prize-giving will be held at 2.30pm, with prizes presented for the following: • Best Motorcycle • Best Veteran Car • Best Vintage Car • Best Classic Car • Most Impressive Chrome • Most Unique Vehicle – judged by a representative from the Cancer Society • Best Dressed Driver and Passengers (dress in the era or a style to suit your vehicle) Note: The event will be run wet or fine – the clubrooms will be open to provide shelter if needed. The VCC Parts Sheds will also be open for those who wish to have a look around. Event Coordinator for VCC Canterbury Branch is Colin Hey – Phone 03 359-8737 (please call evenings only, after 7.30pm) PS: Like all of our events, they don’t just happen on their own, so we will be looking for volunteers to help with marshalling, registration in the clubrooms, and the Devonshire morning teas (which were hugely popular last year and added to the sum donated back to the Cancer Society). Nothing difficult is involved – just a bit of time to help out. If anyone is able to assist, please get in touch – I would be pleased to hear from you.

25 AND 35 YEAR BADGES (for continuous membership of the VCC) A number of 25 and 35-year badges are being presented at this year’s Awards’ Dinner (Saturday 22 September). If you are eligible for these badges, please contact Leigh Craythorne, phone 342 9110 or email craythornes@actrix.co.nz for the appropriate form. Please attend to this as soon as possible as the badges have to be applied for via National Office and forwarded to us from Wellington - delay may mean a wait until next year’s Awards’ Dinner for presentation. Please note: Members do not have to have been in the same branch for 25, 35, 50, 60 years – it is recognition for continuous membership of the Club.

25, 35, 50 and 60-YEAR BADGES HISTORY Wellington Branch had produced a badge suitable for presentation to members of their branch who had completed 25 years continuous membership of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) and in August 1992 the Executive of the Club voted to make this a National Award. In November 1992, Brian Goodman offered to organise the system for the Canterbury Branch and the Branch Committee appointed him as Badge Co-ordinator, a position he held until June 1997 when he retired from the position and I was appointed. 25-year badge. (248 Canterbury Branch presentations to date.) • Members must provide the proof of having completed 25 years continuous membership themselves (as there were only limited records held at National level before the early 1990’s.) E.g. You may have a copy of your nomination form or early membership list; the branch has bound copies of the “Hub” held in the library that may help you; ask the Branch Secretary’s permission to search the Branch Minutes; or I may be able to assist, as I have copies of some of the early membership lists. • Applications are made on a form available from me, either at a Noggin or give me a telephone call (342 9110) and I will post it to you. Rural Ramble Just a short update on our third annual Rural Ramble on Sunday September 30th. Confirming we are to start from the Hurunui District Council Car Park, Amberley. (Between public toilets and Council HQ) SH1, Amberley, on left if coming from southern end. Look for classic car sign. As per the last two years, owing to the fact that there is some gravel, you may bring your modern if you prefer. There are two sections of gravel, but they only represent about one third of our total kms travelled on the route. Registrations in the St. John’s hall, free NZCC magazine and a chance to win one year’s subscription to New Zealand Classic Car magazine valued at $132. It’s not a vehicle related quiz, so all ages have an equal chance of winning. Even the children. Coffee car booked for both the start and lunch venues. (Which, all going to plan , is at historic back country homestead. As this is daylight saving weekend, we plan to start one hour later than normal. Further details closer to the event date. See you all on the North side of winter. In the meantime keep warm.
North Canterbury Noggin Fourth Wednesday of the month, Rangiora RSA from 7:30pm

Motoring Hints….
1/The 1930 Standard, for a while, has had wandering steering –I am always correcting then over correcting it. So I placed 2 shims (about the thickness and width of a hacksaw blade) under the rearmost U Bolts that bolt the 2 springs to the front axle. The back springs had sagged slightly so the shims corrected the castor angle of the front axle king pins to match the sag. Anyway - that’s my interpretation of the fix! Saturdays rural run was so much more pleasant as the steering stayed so much more true. I had already checked the front wheel alignment and the tightness of the ball joint seats. 2/ It rained almost all day Saturday so Rain X on the front windscreen gave us almost perfect vision for both the driver and passenger and the wipers were not used once and haven’t been used for years in the rain. Such a clever product and so reasonably priced from Repco and presumably other outlets. Banishes the vacuum wiper blues of all or nothing or the problem of zilch passenger wiper at all! But we still got lost even with the clear vision! Standards forever! I am only slightly biased. Trevor Lightfoot

Rearview Mirror Restoration of the Year 1968 2018 was hardly a Vintage Year for restorations. Just the one lonely entry. Thankfully a high quality achievement nonetheless. After dedicating years toward returning a pile of rusty metal into his truly magnificent 1935 Citroen Roadster, Graham Tulett felt pretty lonely on competition day. So I scrounged some 50 years old copies of Beaded Wheels from Ted Hockley's very tidy Parts Shed collection to investigate Canterbury Branch Restoration history as at June 1968. Gavin Bain's BW Branch Notes of June 1968 told of one Alan Wills of Tai Tapu seeking parts for his 1911 Belsize, a complete body having been acquired for starters. Then there was talk of a Benz Roadster, a Tipo Zero Fiat, a veteran Riley, a veteran 2 cylinder Renault all in various stages of recovery. Pat Cutler allowed author Gavin the privilege of viewing his 'curved-dash' Oldsmobile in an advanced state of restoration but with gearbox parts proving a problem. A Stutz Coupe formerly owned by Bill Luxton was now in the rebuild hands of Ralph Crum, while Bill was making excellent progress on the ex Tane Poole Stutz Roadster. A1935 Thrupp & Maberley Bentley also in prep, “will soon join another eleven Bentleys in the district! All this restoration activity 50 years ago certainly overshadows recent shrinking years. Where have all those restos gone? Attrition by way of unforeseen values and overseas demand, aging members and easier driving cars will be accounting for some of the older vehicles, while others have presumably found their way into museums and collections. Whatever the reasons, many rare Canterbury heritage machines, lovingly restored and enthusiastically motored by amateur enthusiasts appear to be no longer with us. Tony Becker
