Chairman’s Report The Irishman Rally this year was another resounding success and made even more memorable by the thick blanket of snow in Fairlie and the surrounding countryside. Thanks to Maurice Dunnage, Reg Horner, Dave Inwood, Tim Palmer, George Kear and all your assistants for a wonderful weekend. Congratulations to the winner Vaughan Morrison and runner-up Harry Orpwood. We look forward to your event next year. Restoration of the Year event was held the following weekend, and awards given to Peter Monroe with a Mini Ute, Arthur Poll with a BMW Isetta and Chris Lee with a Triumph Motorcycle. AGM The 63rd Branch AGM was held on Sunday 23 June. The Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer were re-elected along with George R Kear, Tim Palmer, Neil Shaskey and our new member Neale Cook. We are pleased to have an enthusiastic young member like Neale join our committee. We do not have a Club Captain or a Vintage Convenor. Unfortunately a number of the section and convenor reports were not received in time to publish for the AGM. I must apologise that three of our committee members could not be present, two being overseas, but verbal reports were given by the Commercial Convenor and the Swap Meet Chairman. The sub-group representatives to the branch committee remain the same. I want to thank all those who have been prepared to put themselves forward for another year of hard work and challenges. Trophies The MacLachlan Trophy was presented to Joseph McClintock and the Use Not Abuse Trophy this year was awarded to Colin Hey. The Special Events Trophy for “Ongoing and long standing loyal commitment to Canterbury Branch “was awarded to Tony Becker.
6
Chairman’s Report... Calendar of Events There were a couple of minor changes to the proposed Calendar of Events. The proposal by Tony Craythorne to return the Annual Rally to February instead of March was voted on after much debate, and carried by vote. The Annual Rally will be held over the weekend of 29 February and 1 March. The Moped and Clipon Rallies will be held the Sunday before the Annual Rally. There was nobody present to speak to this issue. After considerable discussion, the Calendar was not approved, and will be published in final form this month using the dates that I have been left to decide. Unfilled Committee Positions Despite the Canterbury Branch having the largest membership with almost 1300 members, we are struggling to fill positions despite all appeals to members. Read the latest Gore Branch magazine “The Wiper”. Rod gives you the link in his report. Gore has approximately 140 members, just 9% of Canterbury membership. Apart from a number of positions we do not have, they have more than 20 members of their committee holding the equivalent positions to Canterbury Branch. This includes a Club Captain and four Assistant Club Captains. Their Calendar of Events is much smaller, and we also run the largest Swap Meet in the country. Our main committee and section representatives currently number 12. We currently have no Club Captain, no assistants, and no Vintage Convenor. These are crucial positions to deliver a successful Events Calendar. There is a likelihood of more positions being vacated next year. You are all aware that being such a large branch with huge grounds and club rooms, and so many events to run, requires manpower. For instance; Mike Foster is the Club Rooms/Maintenance Convenor, relying on just a handful of loyal dedicated volunteers on Sunday morning each month to do the maintenance on 50 acres of grounds.
7
Chairman’s Report... The redevelopment of the grounds in the last three years has been spectacular and required huge amounts of time and effort by committee members, and a team of volunteers. Mike and one or two helpers can also be seen around our grounds most days of the week seeing to the regular maintenance and upgrade of equipment needed on such a large property. We also receive a number of requests for our vehicles to be either displayed at events, or to join in parades or to support charitable events. This is a very important part of our public relations and is always well received. Committee members need to organise these requests, and invariably are the first to offer vehicles. To be able to recruit and retain Committee members, and encourage newer members to join the Committee, members need to feel supported and appreciated by the general membership. It was extremely disappointing to hear the negative opinions voiced by a small vocal group of our members about current committee members not working hard enough to fulfill obligations and ridiculing the suggestion we need support teams for critical portfolios on the committee. (Incidentally the support team idea came from a fifty year plus member who steps up to help regularly, not from me or the committee.) I don’t know where the erroneous idea that committee members just run one event per year then sit back came from. More fake news I presume. The committee help each other out whenever possible at events. We need to remember most of the committee still work, have families, belong to other organisations, and have a life! I wish to thank the long standing member who addressed his support for the committee and I was grateful for his comments.
8
Chairman’s Report... Social events The issue of a lack of social events run by the committee was raised. We have a very full calendar of events and each year more are added. I have had several members comment to me that there are far too many events on the calendar, and the list should be pruned. I agree, and we will look at this in the near future. The membership increasingly does not support our functions not connected to a rally. The last dance, well organised by Rod Thrower, and widely promoted, had fewer than fifty turn up. The popular Quiz Night was supported by twenty fewer this year and needed non- members to make up teams. There was also a twenty percent drop in the number attending the AGM this year. See the August Hub for the AGM Minutes. June Events Thanks to all those who turned out Friday night before the AGM to drive people who were attending a Ronald McDonald fundraiser at the Theatre Royal. Colin Hey asked for 45 cars to assist and we caused a bit of a traffic jam in Gloucester Street. Our efforts were very well received. Looking Forward July Events On a positive note, the Winter Run will start at Cutler Park on Sunday 28 July and will finish up at the Barn. Let’s have a good turnout. Dave Dacombe is the organiser. August I have arranged for Tony Haycock, the 2021 Festival Director to attend the August noggin to make a twenty minute presentation on the 2021 Rally in Taranaki. Please come and listen to Tony. He is travelling from the North Island to attend, and I am sure you will all have questions about the proposed format of this international event.
9
Chairman’s Report... Tony is asking for ten percent of the membership to enter, so I hope that over a hundred Canterbury members will support the rally. We will be entering this event. Will you? September I hope many of you will come to our Awards Dinner on 14 September, an important evening to recognise long serving members. I want to thank those members who have stood down for the great contribution they have made in a difficult year. Your efforts have been appreciated by the vast majority of our members, and I also appreciate all those members who have given positive support for our committee to me since the conclusion of the AGM. Thanks also to those who have approached me and offered to assist with various events during the next twelve months. Despite having a reduced committee, we will provide the best possible experience for our members during the next year as we still have talented and dedicated members who are willing to serve our membership. A visit to the parts shed this afternoon has helped put all the negativity into perspective! Thanks for your positive comments and support for our branch. Please keep positive, John Coomber

Secretary’s Report
After listening to negative comments from the floor at our AGM last Sunday my report will be short and sweet this month. Disappointment is an understatement. Page 2 of the Wiper this month makes interesting reading when we talk about support: http://data.axmag.com/data/201906/20190618/U133387_F541295/index.html We asked last year for more support, and we end up with resignations, and be sure it probably won't be the last, I call it burn out not people being lazy. We can only dream. 1300 members !
I would like to thank all those behind the scenes ,you know who you are. You beaver away on the many tasks to keep this branch afloat ,being Maintenance, Grounds, Swap Meet, Parts Shed. The few same people who turn up and offer their assistance in the running of Rallies year in year out. A special thanks to Alan and Shirley Wills, Annette & Tony Meikle, Nancy McSaveny, Doug Watkinson,Chris Parker and anybody I have forgotten who helped with the AGM this year and I am sorry you had to listen to the negativity from the few vocal voices present. But then that is democracy and everybody is entitled to their opinion. We will move on. Secretary.

Thank you to Alister Mc Kenzie for the time and huge effort he spent, organizing this display, it brought back memories, to many of the members. Also displayed, was the winner of the Irishman Rally. With 82 Ford Model As in the Irishman Rally, there was a strong chance that a Model A could win. The winner, Vaughan Morrison in his Model A, has owned this car since he was 12. Motorcycle Report 14th August – Noggin Night. We have a good venue being sorted for this, more details next month. We have noticed a number of bikes turning up for our runs that are not within the bounds of club acceptability – i.e., at least 30 years old for club eligibility. We do welcome new prospective members to come along who may not yet own a club eligible bike, but for club members especially if you do have one then please we would prefer that you ride a club eligible machine. As mentioned, we do welcome prospective members on our runs, and in due course we would also welcome you to take the next step and fill out the paperwork to become members. As always, our club motorcycle, the 1929 Ariel, is available for any of the runs that we have. We believe it to be a reliable machine now, so to see it out occasionally would be great. Be a shame to have it sitting there and the rego and insurance etc. go to waste….. That’s it for this month, CML

THE KEVIN JORY MEMORIAL TRIP Well Kevin, Jane, and Arthur Bodger organised this trip before Kevin's tragic accident and what a great trip it was. First of all we called in to Karikaas Cheese Shop which is always a popular viisit and then we visited the very interesting Horse Memorial in a small cemetery near Oxford. Not many people had heard of it before, a memorial to the horses that didn't return from the First World War. Well worth a visit. Then on to the Oxford Museum where Geoff Townsend had the meeting room nice and warm for lunch. Thanks Geoff! The museum gets better by the year. This was our third visit. If you have never been there, spend a day in Oxford, have some lunch somewhere and spend at least three hours at the museum. You will have a great outing! We had another good raffle and added to the usual prizes was a nice wall hanging donated by Lorraine and Ross Andrew. Overall a good day was had by all. A big thanks to all who helped to make it a success. Jane donated the entry fees to the Oxford Museum. By the way there were 45 cars on this trip.

Swap Meet Report Time is now slipping by, so this update will give you an idea of where things are at with regard to this year’s event. Problems with early arrival. One of the main things the committee has been working on is how to better control the week leading up to the event so we retain the ability to set up the grounds without the huge distraction of people arriving early to set up, and in some cases, begin trading before Swap Meet officially begins on the Friday. This has caused problems relating to security, collecting entry and camping fees, ensuring people set up on the right sites, parking in areas that are required for display – and so the list goes on. It is difficult recruiting enough volunteers as it is, without having to find more to cover the whole week before Swap Meet! So, this year and going forward, the regulations set out below are going to be applied to Campers and Site Holders. These were spoken to at the AGM on 23rd June, and given there we no questions or comments to the contrary, the intention is now to implement them.
We will soon be communicating with all site-holders and campers by email or post to get information for this year’s handbook, so these regulations will be sent out at the same time. If you are a site holder, or intend to camp in the grounds this year, please read through them and work out what changes (if any) you may need to make to get organised for this year’s event. Handbook Advertising Space is available to advertise in this year’s Swap Meet Handbook. If you have a business or service you would like to promote, the handbook is a cheap and well-read outlet. Drop an email to Andrea Dallow at regmad1957@gmail.com and she will sort it out for you. Camping Andrea is also the first point of contact for camping enquiries. Please contact her if you didn’t reserve a campsite site last year, or if you’ve had a site in the past and no longer require it.

Swap Meet Report... Volunteers needed. With this copy of the hub you will receive a form to complete to volunteer for one of the many tasks that need doing over the course of Swap Meet. All able-bodied branch members are requested to volunteer some time for Swap Meet. This is the only fund-raiser for the Branch, and there are many small tasks that require only minimal time, but nonetheless are vitally important to ensure this event can continue to be run. Thanks to Ronald McDonald House Supper Club Helpers
Just a note to say thanks to all those members who kindly offered your cars and time to transport guests taking part in the Annual Ronald McDonald House Supper Club fundraising event on Friday 21st June. This was a great opportunity to showcase our branch and be of service to the community at the same time. RMH events coordinator Jodie Gill has been in touch to express her gratitude for our help. The event raised an amazing total of $105,000, which will assist to keep the House open for another year. The date for next year has already been set for Friday 19 th June 2020, so we may yet be asked to do the same again next year. Colin Hey

Hello I had a wheel guard off an old vehicle handed into the Kaikoura Police station. It was found on SH1 in the Kaikoura area about a month ago. I was wondering if you may have a contact person in your club that I could email photos to, who may be able to identify the type of vehicle it is off. I have not found any corresponding lost reports in our system but I would love to be able to return the wheel guard to its owner – I’m sure the vehicle won’t be able to be restored without it, so someone must be missing it. Many thanks.

2 x 1966 Humber Super Snipe series 5 cars for sale. Both cars have been off the road for twenty or more years, so need certification, before they can be registered and warranted. One car gets driven up and down the driveway every couple of weeks and the other was last run about 9 months ago. Both need some mechanical and bodywork repairs for restoration. Contact: Graham Robinson at GeedeeR@xtra.co.nz , or phone 379 3533.
WANTED Hi. My stepfather is turning 90 in August and we are organizing a small event to celebrate his big day. He recently talked about his first car a Morris 8. What I hoping is you can put me in touch with a Morris 8 owner who we could hire to drive him and my mother from Amberley to Rangiora on August 3rd. Your help in making this happen would be really appreciated. Thanks Andy Gray 0276111156 Looking for tool that was specially made for crank handle pully for my 1936 Austin 18/6 York, as my harmonic balancer needs repair. Does anyone know who repairs them.?
