Chairman’s Report Finally winter is here, and it looks like a cold one. The Quiz night was a successful event, but I am told that some of the questions were really hard. I was sorry to miss this night after planning to attend. By the time you read this issue, we should all be back from Irishman which I believe has a record number of entries this year. Next event is the restoration of the year, then our AGM on Sunday 24 June at 2pm. Please make an effort to attend our AGM. This is your opportunity to have your say on the future of our branch and ask questions of your branch committee. Constructive criticism is always welcome as are any offers to assist in the running of the many events we cater for each year. Hopefully you will be able to see progress on our new bar, as it should be nearing completion by the time of the AGM.

Happy and safe motoring, and keep warm out there. John Coomber - Chairman

Secretary’s Report Well here we are one year in and elections again. I have enjoyed my first year as Secretary and hope the members see fit to re-elect me to the position again for another year as I have just started to get my head around what is necessary to make this huge Branch tick over.

I feel this past year's committee have been a great team to work with and we have achieved a great deal. I would like to thank Leigh , John and Julie from National Office for the support they have provided over the year, with me making many phone calls all times of the day and into the night, also for my fellow committee members for their patience as well. Regards Rod

New Members Welcome to our branch. We look forward to meeting you at our coming events and activities. •

Club Captain’s Report A short report this month as the AGM Report covers most details. The Notice for the Restoration of the Year Run is in this HUB. Sorry it was not listed in the May edition.

On the subject of the Rear Wheel Brake Rally for 2019 Peter Barnett does not want to run this rally next year and we are looking for somebody to take this on. Peter is prepared to assist the new organiser. Peter has run this rally for the last 20 odd years so a huge thank you to Pete for his efforts over all this time. The Rural Run, by all accounts, was a successful day enjoyed by all those who participated. Mick & Rose Marriner were the winners – congratulations Mick and Rose. We look forward to your Run next year. Thanks to Kevin & Claire Campion for organising this year’s run. We are still looking for people to organise the Show Weekend Tour and the Homestead Run for 2018. The AGM is on Sunday, 24th of June 2018. There are always a few issues to resolve so make the effort to attend and contribute on any matters that should arise. Cheers, Dave Inwood - Club Captain

Commercial Report

Many thanks to Peter Monro for hosting the May Commercial noggin, unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it along myself but I’ve been informed that there was a good turnout on what was a pretty cold and miserable night. The June commercial noggin is on the 3rd Wednesday of the month as normal, 20th June, at the usual time of around 7.30 (or whenever you get there), look forward to seeing you all. As the winter months are now upon us, if anyone has any suggestions of somewhere warm to go for a catch up please drop me a line. After a few hiccups (apologies, first time around at arranging a rally) I have the rally plaques for the annual commercial rally, so if you attended and see me around tap me on the shoulder. 9-90s Report

9 - 90s

Greetings to you all. First: May 9. A great day. Sunshine and warm temperatures. The facts: Over 50 cars! Over 100 people! The biggest raffle ever and 43 people signed up and paid for the Hangi in July. If you want to come to the Hangi you can still book up until the June outing. We met at the Belfast Hotel and the new publican came out and asked if he could do anything for us. That was very nice of him so we suggested, perhaps, a bigger carpark! We had a nice ride through some of the new suburbs (where do all the people come from?) and had lunch in the sunshine in a large park in Redwood. From there we went to the home of the organisers, Peter and Wendy Shaskey. They went out of their way to make us welcome. There was a photo display of their cars from scrap to the beautiful cars we saw that they are today. Superba! Peter and Wendy donated the entry fees for the outing to the Nurse Maud Association. $100. Thank you very much. This is too much (or are you thinking of your future?) Ray Maginnis did well for the Ellesmere Heritage Parks. He will have a few more tickets to sell in June for the very nice Austin 7 1928 model. I would love to own it.

June 13 Tony and Annette Meikle Meet at the Peg Carpark, Belfast Hotel at 9.55am As this is going to be a longer run a full tank and an empty bladder is required. July 11 Graeme Sword The Hangi. Meet at the New World Kaiapoi Carpark at 9.55am. Please refer back to your May Hub for specific instructions. August 8 Grant Lomax This is going to be a shorter run so take your vintage car and we will have two bottles of wine for two cars of the coordinator’s choice. September 12 Geoff Townsend Meet at the Yaldhurst Hotel Carpark at 9.55am I thank everyone for coming on our Outings and creating such a good atmosphere. It makes organising them a pleasure. Don’t forget your name tag and be considerate on the road.

Regards, J K and the team PS A big thank you to the Belfast publican. If there is any way we can support him, let’s do it!

BEADED WHEELS REPORTER

Opened my e-mailed copy of "The Hub", May edition, on a gloomy raining night, and finding this picture inside gave me a laugh on an otherwise dull evening.

It set me thinking about signposts, and reminded me of a day a few years ago when I was riding my brother's motorcycle on that excellent motorway in Malaysia which runs from Singapore all the way up to Thailand. I was looking for the exit which would take me onto the road which climbs up to the Genting Highlands -- I'd checked it out on the map that morning, and, as a seasoned ( maybe that should be "well preserved" ) international rider, I could not imagine this being a problem. Seeing a large, clearly painted sign, GENTING HIGHLANDS, with an arrow pointing to the left, as expected, I scooted down the next off-ramp, slightly underwhelmed by the contrast between the superhighway I'd just left and the goat track I now found myself on. My suspicion that all was not quite as it should be rapidly became a certainty, and, discovering around about then that I'd left my map back in Kuala Lumpur, I stopped in a little jungle hamlet of half a dozen houses, half a dozen dogs, and a few curious, wide-eyed children. The elderly chap in the roadside shop where I asked directions spoke no English, and I speak, if it were possible, even less Malay. However, we quickly established, with much shaking of heads, and vigorous pointing of arms that this was indeed NOT the way to the Genting Highlands. More by the Grace of God than by the well-meant but dubiously interpreted directions from the friendly storekeeper, I stumbled across the correct road shortly afterward, and all was well. The next time I saw brother Paul, he laughed at my story, and explained that perceived wisdom among the expat community in KL had it that the company which won the contract for the motorway signage was owned by the brother-in-law of the Minister of Roading. It seems that while his fabricators and painters were first-class tradesmen, and their spelling was perfect, neither he nor his team had quite come to terms with the importance of placing the signs BEFORE, rather than AFTER the junctions to which they referred. The one that had given me a little side-trip, instead of informing motorists that the exit they sought was 2 or 3 hundred metres ahead, in fact was notifying them that "You have just passed the Genting Highlands exit." What the heck, a little harmless nepotism had led me to a village I'd otherwise never have known existed! Rex Knight. 11

Motorcycle Report For those who thought that Autumn was an extension of Summer, the last week or so has been a strong reminder that Winter is just about here. Nevertheless, there are one or two things still happening in the world of two wheels. Past Events.

28th April – Scooter (and small motorcycles to 250cc) Run. Due to some shocking weather both predicted and actually happened this Run was put off until the next day (Sunday 29th April) but that day was also a shocker. Long story short, event has been postponed until Saturday 22nd September, with the next day as a back-up should the Saturday turn to custard. 28th April – Fish & Chip Run. Also did not go ahead due to crap weather. 26th May – Fish & Chip Run. About 15 bikes turned up outside PMH for a run to Governors Bay to view a property with no motorcycles, but plenty of beautiful cars. Rolls Royce, Bentley, Hispania, Bugatti, Fraser Nash, Humber, Buckler, Riley, MG – they were all there, including one or two that are best described as “the only known survivor left.” What a collection! The run then proceeded to The Hill Top via Teddington, Gebbes Pass and Little River. Partly cloudy and very cool day. 27th May – Ruff Run and Working Bee. In the future (as I write) so look for this next month also. Future Events.

10th June – Restoration of the Year Run. If you have just finished restoring your motorcycle, power cycle scooter etc. then consider entering it into this event. Just turn up on the day and show off your restoration skills. I think the rule is that your restored vehicle has to do at least one (or is it two?) runs and the run on this day definitely does count. 13th June – Noggin Night and AGM. To be held in the Barn at Mcleans Island. There are a couple of positions up for grabs, so think about putting your name forward to help put on events etc. for your fellow members’ enjoyment. You get out of it what you put in… 12

Motorcycle Report... I will put out by email to my database list of VCC Motorcyclists a bit closer to the time an agenda with essential information enclosed. If you are not receiving these notifications (I find an excuse at least once a month to bombard your in-box – so to speak) and would like to then just let me know at leithcm@gmail.com . 24th June – Branch AGM. See elsewhere for details. 30th June – Fish & Chip Run. Again, leaves from the PMH on Cashmere Road, meet at 10.30 am. Riders decide on destination. 7th – 8th July – Mid Winter Run. This year it is to Geraldine, with a stop-over to view a very interesting collection of motorcycles after a ride to Methven for lunch via Hororata and Rakaia. Overnighting in Geraldine at the Geraldine Heritage Hotel (ex The Crown…). See elsewhere for entry form, which must be completed and submitted to the organiser by 27th June. Gypsy Nod for the Future. Normally the Akaroa Girder Fork Rally is held the weekend after Swap Meet in October. However, there are 5 Mondays in October 2018 so Labour Day is the 4th Monday – the 22nd – the weekend after the Swap Meet. For 2018 the Girder Fork Rally to Akaroa will be held the weekend after Labour Weekend, on the 27th & 28th October. This will stuff up the Fish & Chip Run as it is normally the last Saturday, so will most likely be cancelled for October. More on this later. I have contacted the Secretary to get email addresses of all new members who own motorcycles back as far as October 2017. If YOU joined the club prior to October 2017 and you own a motorcycle, can you please send a mail to me at leithcm@gmail.com . I keep and maintain a database of VCC motorcyclists so that essential communications can be made with the motorcyclists of the club. Thanks in advance. I think that is about the lot, wrap up warm for those essential motorcycle runs, Cheers, CML.

Daffodil Rally for Cancer Sunday 26th August As part of a VCC National initiative to fundraise for the NZ Cancer Society, the VCC Canterbury Branch is once again running a special and open event on Sunday 26th August. As happened last year, this will be one of dozens of similar events held around the country on the same day. All veteran, vintage and classic vehicle owners, including individuals, and member of ALL motoring clubs (including Custom and Hot-Rod Clubs) will be invited to participate in what was last year one of the largest old-vehicle runs the city has seen. As the host club, it would be great if we could once again lead the way and have a great turn-out of members and vehicles, so please plan to take part on the day and enjoy a great day out. Assemble at the VCC grounds at McLeans Island between 10.00 and 10.30am for registration in the clubrooms. Devonshire teas (or coffee) will be available there at $5.00 per head. Registration will cost $10.00 per car. After registration you can depart on your choice of run: • Car Museum run • Motorcycle museum run • Garden Run • Art Gallery Run • Touring Run (for those who just like to drive on scenic free-running open roads) Each run will involve no more than 1 hour of driving (Touring Run will be 1.5 hours). Entry to any venues will be at discounted rates, and will need to be paid for separately. In all cases entry to venues is optional – you only need to stop and visit if you want to. Some will be free or entry by donation. All runs return to and finish at the VCC grounds by around 1.00pm. A barbeque lunch will be run by a service club, with proceeds also going to the Cancer Society. BYO lunch is another option. All vehicles will be lined up for display, to which the general public will be invited. A brief prize-giving will be held at 2.30pm, with prizes presented for the following: • Best Motorcycle • Best Veteran Car • Best Vintage Car • Best Classic Car • Most Impressive Chrome • Most Unique Vehicle – judged by a representative from the Cancer Society • Best Dressed Driver and Passengers (dress in the era or a style to suit your vehicle) Note: The event will be run wet or fine – the clubrooms will be open to provide shelter if needed. The VCC Parts Sheds will also be open for those who wish to have a look around. Event Coordinator for VCC Canterbury Branch is Colin Hey – Phone 03 359-8737 (please call evenings only, after 7.30pm) PS: Like all of our events, they don’t just happen on their own, so we will be looking for volunteers to help with marshalling, registration in the clubrooms, and the Devonshire morning teas (which were hugely popular last year and added to the sum donated back to the Cancer Society). Nothing difficult is involved – just a bit of time to help out. If anyone is able to assist, please get in touch – I would be pleased to hear from you.

Velosolex Owners Group... (VOG’s)

Bob’s May Run – VOG’s Hibernation Expedition Such is the enthusiasm of our members that we had a massive turnout of 14 riders for the last run of the VOG open season on May 8th, the months of June & July we have decided to rest up our machines and do some over winter maintenance to keep them in peak performance ready for spring, but besides that it’s too jolly cold for the ageing bones of the VOGer’s to tough it out on the roads over these 2 months. Bob Kinnaird organised our run this month over the “east” side of town starting from the Woolston Club carpark, a great place with plenty of space to park up our cars & trailers while we’re away. The run took us round some of the quieter streets around this Woolston area but eventually a crossing over of Linwood Ave loomed up, this can always cause some anxiety amongst the riders as we tempt fate pushing our way through 60kmh motor vehicles to be able to get to our next instruction on the route sheet. Fortunately we all made our way safely over to Hay St and then it was all plain sailing along nice quiet streets we’re we noticed there is still an awful lot of earthquake repair work being undertaken on people’s homes, gosh it’s now 7 years since that February 2011 event and the ongoing trauma of it all. Our next big challenge to tackle was a right hand turn into Dyers Road – let me tell you that’s a mind numbing experience mid -week what with petrol tankers, truck & trailer units, dump trucks & fast cars it can sure give you a case of the “heeby jeebies”, but my thoughts were “there are safety in numbers” so we sure had that on our side and the manoeuvre was safely accomplished by all. We were most impressed riding along Dyers Rd with the amount of horn tooting from oncoming traffic, I’m sure it was a vote of encouragement from fellow motorists and not that of annoyance!! Eventually we arrived at Briford Trailers in Rutherford St Woolston where Bob had arranged a visit for us to see Brian Ford’s collection of all things motor cycle orientated, wow!! We were blown away with his display, of all sorts of older motor bikes, Powerpaks, Wing wheels, Cycleaids, mopeds, old style pushbikes, motorcycle memorabilia you name it he had one on display, there were even some of the big beasts there – the BOSS HOSS V8 motorbikes, these are an amazing machine with a 350cu. in. V8 motor developing 355hp of power!! (our ‘Solex’s faded into insignificance) Brian Ford is the NZ agent for these bikes. Thank you Brian for allowing us to view your collection and to Paul for showing us around. The lads obviously enjoyed this visit as a good hour was spent just wondering around and reminiscing about the times when these old machines were our daily transport!! So on the road again and off to our lunch stop at the Woolston Club and the end of the run with plenty of chewing the fat amongst the “boys” – it’s great to see the camaraderie that has developed amongst the group, we’re now moving into our 4th year, who said it wouldn’t last!! Thanks to Bob for another great run. See you all again in August. Royce Baker VOG 1 16

Autumn Run 2018

22

Autumn Run 2018 This year is ten years since we had the first multi day Autumn Run so we re-enacted the 2008 run using the original full colour copied run sheets for the Saturday Run with the printing donated by Paperplus Kaiapoi. The run was well supported with 37x members in 19x vehicles attending both events the 2008 and 2018 runs from the total of 96x members in 46x vehicles for this the 2018 re-enactment of the 2008 event. The morning arrived cool but later become sunny for the first day of the weekend run to Timaru with the VW Karmann Ghia all loaded up and ready for an early start at Cutler Park for the run organised by Graeme Sword and Family, travelling via the Inland Route through Rakaia Gorge. On arrival at the start fresh baked scones with tea and coffee were waiting for us what a good way to start the day. Graeme welcomed us all there and it was great to see a good variety of models of vehicles from an early vintage the 1920 Essex and an assortment of 1930s, 40s, 50’s, 60’s and 70s vehicles, through to a 1980 Toyota and the Mitsubishi L200 backup. All nice quiet roads some nice shingle, but not too much through lovely Autumn colours, we travelled through Glentunnel with information and colour photos of the area on the run sheets. At Windwhistle it was blowing a bit, but not too bad as it is quite often blowing in this area and was in the weather forecast. Onward to the Rakaia Gorge Bridge, more information about the bridge which was completed in 1882, continued on to Mt Somers with information on early mining activities in the area. Some stopped at Mayfield for a look around the second-hand shop to see if there were any nibbles then on to an interesting little detour off the main road around the back of Geraldine behind the hills with more information. Geraldine was the lunch stop 12.30pm sharp at the Heritage Hotel with a lovely fish and salad meal, beautifully done and they served all the 90 people so fast followed by tea and coffee with homemade cake supplied by the Sword family, finally there was a lucky plate draw where Anita Inwood winning and received a very nice gift basket donated by Lorraine & Ross Andrew. The afternoon run stage 2 headed off towards Fairlie before turning left into Mulvihill Road, over Hanging Rock Bridge then on to Pleasant Point with more information on the Railway which ran through the town for almost 100 years before it closed in1968, the Heritage Railway now use the 2.5 kilometres of the track along the old route into the centre of the town. This was our next stop at the Pleasant Point Museum and Railway Workshops where they operate Steam Locomotives and one of only two in the world replica Model T Railcars. Afternoon tea was served in the workshops by the railway members with cookies supplied by the organisers the venue was very much appreciated by our members. More photos were taken for the calendar which is being produced by Paperplus Kaiapoi before heading off on stage 3 towards the Richard Pearse Memorial who is reported to have been successful flying his flying machine in 1904, just before the Wright Brothers, then on to Timaru to our Motel Aspen on King Street. Yes we are hungry again so at 6.15pm we are off to the RSA for a great dinner, spot prizes and of course the usual raffledraw, good company and band. Sunday morning with a slight frost, some of the cars were a bit reluctant to start but soon all of us headed off to the very nice South Canterbury VCC Club Rooms and spare parts department. They opened at 9 o’clock for us where anyone who wanted to could look around and buy that piece they were looking for or of course morning tea in their clubrooms with more cookies and a cuppa. A big thank-you to the South Canterbury members who took the time to host us at their club rooms and one day we may be able to repay them by hosting them at our club rooms, It was pleasing to see them joining in with us at the Anzacs in action display. At 10 o’clock it was time for stage 4 to hit the road, this time to Rangitata Island Airfield’s ANZAC in ACTION to display our cars along with all the local cars, trucks, tractors, aircraft, traction engines and military working displays etc. what a fantastic day out. After lunch at 2 o’clock it was time to say our goodbyes and more prizes for the winners of the quiz, we had been given on Canterbury place names and of course a cuppa and cookies, this time ANZAC biscuits as well. Many thanks to the organisers for a fantastic weekend, they have run all the overnight Autumn runs so far and look after us all so well, having everything planned to go like clockwork giving us a very enjoyable weekend. Graeme booked the whole of Aspen on King Street Motel’s (29 units = 76 people) at a good rate, lovely clean rooms and very roomy. The overflow were booked in just down the road at the Asure Ashley Motor Lodge with the rest organising their own accommodation. Both lovely sunny days with a shower on Saturday night which didn’t trouble us at all, finally thanks again to the extended Sword Family. . RT & EJ

What a great fun way to pass an evening. Form a group with like minded folk, participate with vigor include a smattering of silliness equals a good night. Autumn Run (from the Organiser)

A big thank-you to all our members who attended (95x members a very pleasing number) and my extended family and friends for helping in many ways throughout the weekend. Alan Parris On Thursday 26th April we said our final farewells to Alan Parris at his funeral at the Linwood Rugby Clubrooms. A selection of vintage cars and a couple of hot-rods were parked outside in clear view of everyone attending the service. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day – Alan would have been pleased, as the weather was always his greatest nemesis leading up to Swap Meet and other big events. Alan was chairman of our Swap Meet committee for some 25 years, and having been a branch member for probably around 10 years before that, he was already well known for his input into the running of our branch. Sitting on the branch committee, he played a very active role in the running of the Canterbury branch, and being a professional mathematics teacher at Linwood College, he was very skilled at reviewing information and data, and at making things happen – particularly if a bit of authority was needed in doing so. He put his skills to good use checking and negotiating things like our lease agreements, legal documents, proposed VCC policy and rule changes – in fact at anything that needed a bit of authority to get something across the line. When he took over as Swap Meet committee chairman, he became the face of Swap Meet, and well known nationally as the “red-headed bearded guy who organises the Canterbury branch Swap Meet”. And organise it he did. As the years went on, and with the help of an enthusiastic committee, he developed it into a well-oiled fundraising machine that over the years has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for our branch. As he always threatened when announcing how many noggins were left before Swap Meet, members must either help, or face the prospect of selling raffle tickets to keep the branch going. Every year there was some tweak to make to try and make it better, and now it’s the biggest in the country. Alan was also actively involved in other branch activities, and always looked forward to his annual ‘Team Yellow Dodge’ trips to Irishman’s, which he and his good friend the late Murray Smith enjoyed with gusto. Alan and Liz also were very enthusiastic organisers of the annual branch children’s Christmas party, right up to last year’s one. He was also very passionate about the ongoing development of the grounds, wanting to ensure that they were developed in such a way so as not to compromise the many uses Cutler Park is put to each year, even if it did mean trees had to go! His car interests were varied, and his many sheds and his huge property concealed dozens of projects, thousands of parts, and favourite cars – from early Dodges right through to a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. There were also the odd old-school hot-rods tucked away. Nothing was thrown away if he thought it could be used again. 25

Alan Parris... Alan courageously fought off cancer (or ‘rust’ as he called it) for many years, and never let it slow him down – there were always kids to teach, projects to do, billiards tournaments and overseas conferences to attend, charities to raise money for, and committees needing his input. His funeral revealed just how much he was respected in his profession, and what a tireless worker he was to improve the lot of so many kids, people and organisations he was involved with. It was fitting indeed that he was awarded the NZ Order of Merit for services to mathematics in 2017.

Personally, I think Alan was another victim of the Christchurch earthquakes, as he never really recovered from the absolute devastation it dealt to his sheds, cars, and property. Although steadfastly optimistic, life became a constant battle with the after-effects of liquefaction, and with insurance and bureaucracy as he got a new house built for Liz and himself, and started rebuilding his sheds and redevelopment of their extensive property. Alan’s own words were read at his funeral. It was funny, informative, yet emotional, and as his casket was taken out, Pink Floyd’s “Brick in the Wall” belted out on the sound system. Every time I hear it now, I think of Alan. On behalf of the whole Club, I extend our most sincere condolences to Liz and the family. He’s going to be missed very much, and will be remembered for years to come, especially at Swap Meet time. Site number 183 will never be the same again. Colin Hey .

16th Annual Blue Suede Cruise Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, May 2018 While away for work in the state of Mississippi, in a little town called Tupelo, I found that there was to be held a ‘classic car’ show called the Blue Suede Cruise. Tupelo is famous as being the birthplace of Elvis Presley, hence the name of the show. My American hosts took us to the show and introduced me to a man named Scott Hendrix, who had 7 of his own vehicles on display. Scott’s collection included, Ford Pick Up Trucks, a 1938 Buick Special convertible coupe (my favourite of the entire show), a 1949 Cadillac he uses for weddings, 2 x Ford Thunderbirds (1955 and 1956), and a 1978 Corvette. Scott had a story to tell for every vehicle there. He told me that there were over 700 vehicles in attendance at this years show. Most of the vehicles were modified classics or hot rods. But if you looked carefully you would find the true classics such as Scott’s that were still original or restored as such. I also loved the Antique Car number plate they had on some of the vehicles. An amazing site, with so many large American cars ranging in dates from the mid 1930’s to present day. My only regret was there wasn’t a single British car in the line-up anywhere! The Editor.
