Chairman’s Report It is officially winter now, as we approach our Annual General Meeting on Sunday 23rd. May was a busy month for many, with the Rural Run, Quiz night and two motorcycle events on the last weekend of the month. A new function also began this month. It was the first Veteran Noggin held at Colin and Jenny Hey’s home, and hopefully the first of a monthly event to encourage all you veteran owners to get together. Good work Colin. The Quiz Night was an excellent event again this year, although numbers were down on last year. A wide range of questions were involved, and a very good selection of prizes were available. I attached myself to the group with Amanda Franklin and Liz Paris, as this appeared to be the youngest group in the hall. That was the right decision, as after trailing two other groups all night, we came through in the last round to claim victory. Thanks to our bar manager Gill Stevenson and family for organising a great event. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Most of you will have seen the newly painted clubrooms by now, and I have had a range of comments about the colour both for and against. The colour blends in with the background and was chosen for this reason. The new double glazed windows have also been installed along with the remote opening controls. Phil Jeeves can take the credit for the planning and delivery of this project on time and within budget. As I write this, we are preparing for another Irishman rally, and once again there is a very large entry this year. I will keep my fingers crossed for good weather and safe motoring all weekend. Our branch AGM will be held on Sunday 23rd. Please make an effort to attend as this is your opportunity to have your say in the affairs of your branch. If you don’t attend, you can’t complain if you don’t like what is decided. John Coomber

Secretary’s Report

As I write this report for this month I wonder what the AGM will bring for us in the way of support this coming year. I am reminded every time I go to a National Executive Meeting of the fact that we, the executive, (Delegates) from the Branches have the responsibility on behalf of the members YOU, to advise the committee of your wishes on what direction you would like the Club to take. Our Branch Committee is no different, we rely on YOU, our Branch Members, to support and help us in all aspects of running this huge Branch of ours. There are times for all of us when we feel why do we bother, giving up in most cases our twilight years in this task. Then I remind myself all the enjoyment I get from the camaraderie of my fellow committee members. Yes this job can take a huge amount of time but as the old saying goes, “You get out of it what you are prepared to put in.” So if you can give to your branch any small amount of time whether it be helping run some of our rallies or helping our maintenance crew look after our grounds please make yourself known to a committee member, the more names we can call on the easier it is on everyone. Putting your name forward as a helper is not volunteering to go on the committee. This year we are looking for some new blood on the committee, there are going to be some BIG shoes to fill in the future and, as some of us are not getting any younger, it would be nice to know there are others who are willing to step up.

See you all at the AGM Sunday 23rd June 2pm Remember to bring your membership card. Lets make it a Biggie. Your Secretary Rod

Club Captain’s Report Well almost winter already and that means Irishmans Weekend. By the time you read this the rally will have been and gone with the winners decided to run next year's adventure. The Rural Run on the 11th May started at Kaiapoi on a foggy morning. From all accounts an enjoyable run, although there is a rumour someone managed to slip off the road! Thank you to Mick & Rose Mariner for organizing the run. The lucky winner was Murray Collins. We look forward to your run next year Murray. Interesting to read Royce's (VOG 1) remarks on Bob's April Run. The challenge of the hill, screaming upwards at 8kph. This will be my last report as I am standing down as Club Captain. Mike Foster is still looking for volunteers to help out on grounds maintenance. Think about this and give Mike a call on 359-8260. Maintenance day is changing to the 2nd Sunday in every month. May 2019 Noggin Display

Our May Noggin Display was a combination of, 2 of the winners from the Canterbury Branch Annual P Group Rally & 2 of the 3 Canterbury Branch winners, from the South Island Easter National Rally, held at Ashburton. Graeme Sword also won, Best Performance on a M/C, but did not display his 1914 Triumph. This is the 1st time we have had the same person displaying two of their vehicles, that were overall winners, in 2 current Rallies. If you would like a few tips on how to do this, have a chat to Dave Backhouse. However Dave did have the expert help from his granddaughter, Grace Backhouse-Richards, who navigated for him, in the P Group Rally. Congratulations & Thank you, to the following for displaying their vehicles. 10

25,35, 50 and 60 YEAR BADGES (To be presented at the Branch Awards’ Dinner Sat 14 September 2019) If you are eligible for these badges, please contact Leigh Craythorne, telephone 342 9110 or email craythornes@actrix.co.nz for the appropriate form. Members must provide the proof of having completed 25 years continuous membership themselves (as there were only limited records held at National level before the early 1990’s.) E.g. You may have a copy of your nomination form or early membership list; the branch has bound copies of the “Hub” held in the library that may help you; ask the Branch Secretary’s permission to search the Branch Minutes; or I may be able to assist, as I have copies of some of the early membership lists. Please attend to this and contact me as soon as possible as the badges have to be approved by the branch committee before being processed via National Office and forwarded to us from Wellington - delay may mean a wait until next year’s Awards’ Dinner for presentation. Members do not have to have been in the same branch for 25, 35, 50, 60 years – it is recognition for continuous membership of the Club. Leigh Craythorne PLEASE NOTE : contact me please - do not contact National Office.

Motorcycle Report Well, it’s supposed to be late autumn to early winter, but have hardly had a frost yet! Still, with cold foggy mornings it has been a challenge to get the bike out… Past Events 27 April – Scooter and Small (under 250cc) Motorcycle Run. 8 riders, with Thomas Brown the overall winner. See elsewhere for the write-up by Royce Baker. 27 April – Fish & Chip Run. Not a great turn-out from all accounts, but the 4 – 5 riders would have had a good day for a run somewhere. 8 May – Monthly Noggin. Was scheduled for Dutton’s Garage in Carlyle St, but at the last moment was cancelled due to their staff being in Australia. A quick note was broadcast via the e-mail system of contacting the motorcycle members, and about 40 turned up to the alternative venue, Auto Restorations Ltd in Stewart St. Many thanks to Joseph McClintock for organising this visit; very much at the last minute. The section attended Auto Restorations about a year ago, and there were some projects still being worked this visit which were being started on the last time the section visited. It was great to see the progress on these over time. 25 May – Fish & Chip Run. Bitter day to begin with thick dense fog and about 4 degrees certainly put a chill on the day. The writer started out on his bike but had to return and get his car, the fog had wet both sides of glasses and visor, very dangerous when one cannot see! Organised in advance, the run went on two garage raids in the Ashburton area. The first was a collection of Honda Police bikes ex MOT NZ. The second garage was full of BSA’s, both bikes and a very rare BSA car of 1938 vintage. Both garages had plenty of other attractions as well. Thanks indeed to Jens Christensen for liaising with the garage owners and providing route sheets to get there. Some 23 bikes and 3 – 4 cars went, again demonstrating the power of the e-mailed reminders. That was the second event this month that was very well supported; perhaps we may need to look at organising attractive destinations that are sure to be places bikers like to visit? It was noted that quite a number of those fronting up were new faces, so hopefully these new attendees will be encouraged to come out on more runs and events in the future. Future Events. 12 June – Motorcycle Noggin Night, and AGM of the Motorcycle Section. Supper is usually served (bribery and corruption to get you along…). Please come along and show your support for the section, and also consider standing for the committee. The section is particularly keen on learning from the younger members as to what direction they would like to see the section going, and what better forum than expounding your views when part of the committee? 29 June – Fish & Chip Run. Meet outside PMH Hospital, 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. Riders’ decision on destination, but bearing in mind the successes of the organised destination, there just might be an e-mailed reminder of the run with a destination of note! Keep an eye out for this! 10 July - Monthly Noggin. More info on this in the July Hub. Your committee is working on a very worthwhile destination here in Christchurch… 13 – 14 July – Mid Winter Run. Nothing definite decided yet, but decision will hopefully be made by June’s Noggin Night and AGM. Will put out more information by email after the AGM. Once again, if YOU want to receive these emailed reminders and other power-houses of useless information and you currently don’t, PLEASE email me (leithcm@gmail.com) or phone me (021 2177 140) and I will put you on the list. 27 July – Fish & Chip Run. Meet outside PMH Hospital, 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. More next month. That is just about it for this month, keep warm when out on the bike. Cheers, CML

9-90s Report

9 - 90s

Hi to you all This month Dave and Pam Dacombe took care of the outing. We had a lovely ride through some North Canterbury roads several of which I had never been on before. We went through a new subdivision in Rangiora called Westpark. You have to see it to believe it - the size of it! Then we carried on to Barry Tull's farm to have a look at his "toys". Wherever did he get it all from? There is at least 500 years of restoration to be done there. Thank you Barry for letting us have a look around and for your hospitality. We had lunch in his yard. Either Pam or Dave must have been to church because the weather was a lot better than had been predicted. It was very pleasant. Dave and Pam are looking to their future. They donated the entry fees of $85.00 to Nurse Maude. Thank you very much, you two, for a most enjoyable outing. June 12 Kevin and Jane Jory Meet at the Peg Carpark, Belfast Hotel at 9.55pm July 10 The Barn Winter Christmas Pot Luck Lunch and remember the Maori way. Bring for 2 and eat for 1. Colin Clutterbuck is organising a hobby display for all those who have a hobby they like to share. We are looking forward to seeing you all next month. J K and the team

Annual Scooter and Small Motorcycle Run 27 April 2019 Eight riders took part in the Annual Scooter and Small Motorcycle run on 27 April. Numbers were well down on previous years, but this was not unexpected, given that half of the country had taken 2-3 days off work to get a 10-day holiday break over the Easter/ANZAC Day period. We set off from the Speight’s Ale House at Tower Junction and headed south, around the base of the hills, Halswell, Quarry, Old Tai Tapu Rd and across to Lincoln for morning tea. One of Kurt Ebrecht’s fleet of three Puch’s starting coughing and spluttering but managed to hobble to Lincoln, where it miraculously came to life again for the next stage. Thomas Brown’s Honda 50 was also seen on the roadside, with tools and spark plug out, combined with some colourful language when it was discovered it was out of petrol…. Next, it was off to Leeston for lunch at the huge new pub, The Crate and Barrel. The publican chose his favoured bike and kindly donated a bottle of wine as a prize. After lunch we headed back through Coe’s Ford, Lincoln and side-roads to the Speight’s Ale House for the prize giving. All bikes made it and the back-up trailer wasn’t needed at all. Must be a first! The best-performance trophy went to Thomas Brown for unnecessarily dismantling his bike. Bloody Kurt Ebrecht won the publican’s-choice prize yet again (don’t know how many years this conspiracy has gone on for!), for his Puch SRA250 scooter. As I already had a publican’s-choice prize organised, I wasn’t expecting the bottle of wine from the Leeston Publican, so I decided the most appropriate person to receive that, would be Graeme Barnett for driving the back-up trailer: Back-up drivers are the unsung heroes of many bike runs, providing us riders with the assurance that we will get home, one way or another. Bikes on the 100km run included three Honda 50cc step-throughs, three Puchs (250cc scooter, 65cc scooter-thingy-monstrosity, and 50cc moped), a Yamaha 50cc (beautiful…no bias!) and a Vespa 200cc. Apart from a brief shower of rain, the weather played its part and all had a great day out. I know there are many more scooters and sub-250cc bikes lurking in sheds out there, so start sorting them now for next year’s run, which by-the-way, will move from the last Saturday of April to a new date, so as not to clash with the Fish and Chip run. 2019 Daffodil Rally for Cancer Sunday 25th August As part of a VCC National initiative to fundraise for the NZ Cancer Society, the VCC Canterbury Branch is once again running a special and open event on Sunday 25th August. As happened last year, this will be one of dozens of similar events held around the country on the same day. All veteran, vintage and classic vehicle owners, including individual enthusiasts, and member of ALL motoring clubs (including Custom and Hot-Rod Clubs) will be invited to participate in what was last year one of the largest old-vehicle runs the city has seen. As the host club, it would be great if we could once again lead the way and have a great turn-out of members and vehicles, so please mark the date in your diary now and plan to take part on the day and enjoy a great day out. Anyone keen on assisting with organising the event (particularly on the day), please contact Colin Hey, Ph 359-8737

Rural Run

Mick and Rose Mariner had the privilege of organising this years Rural Run. We started at New World car park Kaiapoi and finished at Motonau, with many seldom used roads along the way. I’m sure the locals, on some of these roads, were not used to pulling to the side, to let other cars coming towards them, pass. From the car park we travelled some back roads of Kaiapoi then crossed the Main North Road to Sefton, Broomfield and Leithfield keeping on back roads as much as possible. We were back on the Main North Road again at Waipara and drove to Waikari where we turned onto Waikari Valley road taking us to Greta Valley. Detouring again we travelled more back roads to our lunch stop at Motonau. There was a good turnout with about twenty five cars. We lunched together at Motonau Community Centre. It was great to spend time with like minded people who like to get away from the city and enjoy our country roads, without it being too onerous. Now, The Trophy! Awarded for winning this run. We will have this for a year. It is not handsome, but I find it sits well beside my lazy boy, as a no clutter, single cup coffee table or maybe a glass of red wine. Well done, Mick and Rose. Dutton Garage Malvern Run Anzac Day 2019 After early low cloud and drizzle the sun appeared right on time for the start of the clubs Malvern Run on Anzac Day. 70 cars and 2 motorcycles lined up for the car display at the Darfield Recreation Centre and this included 25 veterans which was one of the best gatherings of 100 year old vehicles for a club event for some time. It was a great opportunity for local residents to come along and view the vehicles which were all beautifully turned out for the occasion. One of the visitors to be welcomed this year was Sam Broughton, the Selwyn District Mayor who was most impressed with the display and also the way that we are able to commemorate Anzac Day and also celebrates the vehicles of the times. Whilst he was with us we were able to treat him to a ride on a 1914 Renault and he left us for his next appointment vowing to return next year with his family to participate in the run as well. Kindly Dutton Garage has offered a suitable vehicle so we look forward to seeing him back next year. At 11am after the briefing and the reading of the Soldiers Ode by Terry Hutchinson of the RSA, the Peoples and Entrants choice prizes were presented by Kirstin and Royden Mauger of Dutton Garage and they went to Christchurch Branch members George and Sue Lee with their Alldays and Onions and Otago members Colin and Judy Winter with their 1900 Wolseley. George and Colin then as the drivers of the 2 oldest cars had the honour of tearing up the red flag to start the run. All vehicles over 100years of age are then presented at the start with the joint “ VCC Dutton’s” medal in appreciation of their participation. The run once underway then takes the vehicles on a tour of the Malvern district past the 5 War Memorials of Darfield, Sheffield, Hororata, Glenroy and Glentunnel before stopping for a pie at the Willows Cafe, at the Hororata Golf club. Great people, fabulous cars and beautiful autumn touring make this event one to pencil into your calendar for next year. My thanks to Dutton Garage for their continuing support and also to those who helped so much on the day. See you next year. Malcolm McGibbon 18

Velosolex Owners Group (VOG’s) May Run – The end of VOG’s summer season Cyclists, pedestrians & motorists will all be pleased to learn that the roads will be safe again on the 2nd Tuesday of each month as the VOG Team enter into the winter rest period. Peace will reigneth upon the streets. A good turn out once again on May 14th with 12 of our keenest riders heading off on another adventure on a bootiful Autumn morning. Setting off from McMahon Drive in Aidanfield we headed through the bike trail that comes out by Nga Puna Wai sports complex, a bit of a slalom course dodging walkers with dogs and cyclists but being the careful and safety conscious riders that we are everybody got through unscathed, including the doggies. The route then took us through the new subdivision that runs parallel with Henderson’s Rd which has been developed on land that was once part of the original Spreydon Lodge home of the “Franco Horse Racing Stables” developed by the late Wayne Francis in the mid 1980’s. A gentle cruise through the uninhabited streets of this subdivision then brought us out into the Rowley area and eventually to Mathers Rd and Hoon Hay Park where we headed across this green oasis out on to Victors Rd and crossing over Sparks Rd onto the Quarryman’s Bike Trail which we followed all the way to Strickland St. This is a marvellous trail if you are a cyclist but as a motorist most will disagree . Keeping to this trail along Strickland St we crossed over Brougham St at the lights. A very cunning system has been developed on these crossings to make it safe for cyclists and ‘Solex riders to cross the roads, there are sensors somewhere that control the changing of the lights when you approach them, don’t ask me how it works but it’s a fantastic system. Now on Antigua St we carried on to our destination and visit for this month to VCC member Ian Smith & his wife Averill’s warehouse on Disraeli St to view their collection of Classic cars. Ian has a passion for William Lyons’ elegantly designed Jaguar sports cars. Included in his collection were a 1934 “SS” Not known as Jaguar at that stage, a 1959 Jag’ XK150 Drophead 2+2. A 1955 XK140 2 seater Roadster , a 1967 E type 4.2SI 2 seater coupe originally owned by the Stewart Family of the PDL industry. Plus 2 modern XK 8’s. Ian’s collection also included a couple of Model A Fords, Austin Healy’s, MG, even a couple of Minis. Also seen in the collection was a very tidy Honda 50 Stepthru’. But best of all Ian has an early 50’s “model 1700” Velosolex and is a member of the VOG group and he joins us when he can on our monthly runs. Thanks Ian & Averill for sharing your passion with us. It’s great to see these lovely cars kept in pristine condition. Lunch was now the order of the day so a short hair raising trip was made back down Disraeli over Antigua, Durham and Montreal Streets battling the lunchtime traffic in the Sydenham area and on to Battersea St to the Club Hotel for some stimulating conversation on what we had viewed at Ian’s plus a bit of tucker for the tum tum and of course the odd bit of talk about of all things our Velosolexes. After lunch it was a short hop back to the start once again via the magic of the bike trails following the Brougham St expressway and Southern Motorway and then through the A&P grounds to the finish at McMahon Drive. Another great jaunt was had by all and a great end to the VOG’s Summer Season. Winner of the Hardluck Trophy this month was Barry Walker. He couldn’t get his bike to fire up right at the start he had lost his spark and after a simple change of spark plug he was up and running again. I wish it was as simple as that to get our spark back…. Sometimes. See you again in August. Royce VOG 1

Velosolex Owners Group... (VOG’s)

PASSING LANE It was with sadness that we said good bye to VCC Canterbury Branch member Lyall Hurst during the month of March. Lyall had also been a very keen and active member of our VOG group from the start and was known as VOG 3. He can be remembered on VCC club runs always with the Rego. plate number “Lyall 1” attached to his vehicles. Lyall drove a very immaculate 1960’s Vauxhall Velox PAX which he later changed for a Morris 1000 also in mint condition. Our condolences go to Kay and family on the loss of Lyall.

Upcoming Events Restoration of the Year Sunday 9 June The restoration of the year rally is an opportunity for you to tick off one of your club events to meet the regulations before entering for a restoration trophy. It is a small run starting from the clubrooms around 10am and returning for a picnic lunch around midday. While lunching in the sun cars that are entered for a trophy will be judged in front of the hall.

To make things easier for the Judges we request that the following form be completed by those who wish to enter for a Trophy. This will allow the judges to have more information on the vehicles before the day to correctly put them in the right category and understand their history. There is no cost for entering but the close off date for this information is Friday 31 rd of May. Only cars entering for a trophy need to provide this information. It would be great to see any members join us for lunch and look over the cars during judging. If you want to participate in the run just turn up on the day.

Branch Annual General Meeting Sunday 23 June 2018 at 2:00pm All VCC Members welcome! Come along and have your say in what the Branch will do for the next year. Held in the Main Hall, Cutler Park, McLeans Island.

Upcoming Events

Forward Notice: Autumn Run 2020 Information for members who usually attend the Autumn Run Next year we intend going south for a three day run based at The Geraldine Heritage Hotel on ANZAC weekend 2020. I have already pencilled the Hotel and will confirm this after the committee OK this date at this month’s meeting as it does coincide with the ANZAC Run but we have used this date for over five years, (on the last three runs when we have gone South.)
