Chairman’s Report This month we have branch events every weekend and entry forms were in the February Hub. Remember that the Annual Branch Rally will be held on 30/31 March and entries close on 7 March. I hope we have a good number of entries for this event. The National South Island Easter Rally is held at Ashburton this year, so I hope there is a good turnout from Canterbury Branch, as it is not too far to travel. Remember that we hold the Penzoil ChallengeTrophy which was presented in 1963 for competition between South Island Branches at the National South Island Easter Rallies. This is a team event and we have won the trophy five times. We need four vehicles from different age categories, and I hope that we can once again hold onto this trophy. A reminder that entries close on 10 March, so get yours in before the close off date. Contact Rod Thrower if you need a form. Christine and I have just returned from a very enjoyable visit to the Art Deco festival in Napier and our thanks go to Diane and Geoff Quarrie for hosting us and providing a vintage Chev to take part in the events. While there I was talking to Tony Haycock, the 2021 Taranaki Rally Director, and he gave me a couple of magnetic advertising posters for the rally and flyers advertising the event. This event is only 22 months away now, so we all need to start planning for it and arranging accommodation. Tony has promised to send more advertising signs down for us, and will attend one of our club nights to talk to us about the event. There was a lot of interest from the public at Napier in our advertising signs which we had placed on the sides of our cars. Our works/upgrading programme is continuing this year with painting of our main hall and replacement of the old louvre windows . I want to thank Phil Jeeves for his efforts in researching and obtaining quotes for the work, and your committee will make a decision on commencement of the work in the very near future. Enjoy this month’s motoring events, and get your entries in early . John Coomber

Secretary’s Report
Welcome to my March Report, what there is of it.
Things have just been ticking along this month as I have been away. I had a good response to the Name badge list published last month with nearly 50% being claimed. As you will see in this months Hub we welcome two New members Frazer & Evan Kear who come from a fine vintage stock, please make them feel at home. The numbers of new members passing though committee this month is very pleasing with seven or maybe eight applications with two of them being joint members. A good mix of vehicles including 2 Chevrolets, 4 Morris Minors,1 Holden, 2 Chryslers, 2 Austin, 2 Ford Cortinas. Please make these members feel welcome take them into your fold. Don't forget now is the time to start thinking of joining our happy bunch on the committee or just becoming involved with the day to day running of our huge Branch. Without you members we would not exist , but with your input we can but grow. There are always places for people to help the conveners of Rallies etc on the day and we would love to see some of you come out from behind the wheel for a day.
By the time you read this the Back Country Run would have taken place and I'm sure we will be able to read all about it in next months Hub. A small picture from my camping spot in Nelson with the fires to keep us warm, not that we needed them. Cheers Rod

Club Captain’s Report No report from the Club Captain this month—he is away for most of February.
Commercial Report For the February commercial noggin we visited the home of Tony and Leigh Craythorne, for the usual catch up and look around the garages, including the large collection of airline memorabilia that’s obviously been collected over a large number of years and much interest in Tony’s portable car hoist. Saturday 23rd was the Annual Commercial Rally, fortunately the serious rain never arrived as predicted so the day was mostly dry. Many thanks to Tony and Leigh for helping out with the rally, Amanda and Wayne for manning the bar for the post-rally BBQ, and the Vintage Machinery club for the invitation to drop in for a look around in the afternoon. The next commercial noggin is on Wednesday 20th March, being hosted by Graeme Shaskey at 181 Grimseys Rd, see you there. Neil Shaskey.
If you have an article you would like published, a funny story or some photos of a recent event or rally you could share, please send them through to the Editor for inclusion in a future edition of The Hub. 9
February 2019 Noggin Display Our February Noggin Display was, “the 4 Canterbury Team members won the Pennzoil Trophy” at the National South Island Easter Rally, Invercargill 2018. (I know it was a long time coming). Thank you to the following from Team Canterbury, for displaying their winning vehicles: Pam & Peter Yeatman 1928 Rugby Roadster. Jim Miles 1938 Morris 8, Christine & John Coomber 1957 Bentley S1. Annette & Tony Meikle 1980 Toyota Cressida. Pennzoil Trophy History. In case you are not familiar with the Pennzoil Trophy, here is some history relating to it. Sam Slyfield was the South Island Manager of the long established “Pennzoil Oil Company”. Pennzoil, through Sam, generously sponsored many rallies will oil and petrol etc as far back as the 1957 Veteran rally at Rangiora, 1958 Veteran & Vintage at Picton, 1962 Easter at Blenheim and 1965 6th International (Haast Rally), to name some.
Sam was the Deputy Organizer for the 6th International Rally in 1965, as well as being in charge of the Field Kitchen Service. His job was to ensure that the mobile field kitchen at the 1965 rally processed the 33 tons of food, that was made into 26,000 meals at 13 locations over 14 days all ran smoothly. The Trophy was donated in 1963 and was used nationally until 1981, when it became the trophy of competition, between South Island branches at National South Island Rallies. The Maxwell Trophy is the North Island equivalent. Canterbury has won the Pennzoil Trophy 5 times. Good luck Team Canterbury at this year’s National South Island Rally at Ashburton. Motorcycle Report These notes will be a bit of a rush, only got back from the National Motorcycle Rally held in Blenheim, so there may be a few gaps. Past Events. 13 February 2019 – Monthly Motorcycle Noggin. As this was the day before some of the Canterbury participants were due to leave I did not attend the noggin, held at McLeans Island’s Motorcycle Corner. 15 – 21st February 2019 – National Motorcycle Rally and Post Event Tour. About 44 participants from Canterbury enjoyed the event from a total entry of 189 bikes. Contrary to expectations Canterbury did not win the Interclub Trophy, nor did it feature much in the general gongs and medals being handed out. Still, bloody good event very well run. 23rd February – Fish & Chip Run. No report on this event available. Future Events. 3rd March – Moped Run, Kurt Ebrecht, cell 021 0433 707, is the organiser. Start is at PMH Hospital car park (not on the road as per F&C runs), 10.00 am for a 10.30 am departure. Room in park for trailers. 9th March – Clip-on Run. Alistair McKenzie is the organiser. Start is at 75 Fountains Road, assemble at 10.00 am for a 10.30 am departure, and see Feb Hub for details. Approx 26 km round trip, dress to be seen. Contact Alistair McKenzie 355 0417 or Doug 383 1817.
13 March – Monthly Noggin. Again to be at McLeans Island, 7.30 pm onwards. Motorcycle Corner (or Barn if bloody cold…) 16 – 17 March – Jim Toohey Rally. An Overnight run to Fairlie, entries close 8th March. See last month’s Hub for entry forms or go on line FAST!!! Leaves from NPD petrol station, Jones Road, Rolleston, meet 9.30 am for a 10.00 am start, backup provided. 30th March – Fish & Chip Run. Meet at PMH Hospital 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. Rider’s choice on destination. 10 April – Motorcycle Noggin. 27th April – Scooter and Small Motorcycles (up to 250 cc) Run. Details next month, John Benn is the organiser. 27th April – Fish & Chip Run. This will probably be the run to Ashburton that had to be canned late last year due to extremely inclement weather… See next month’s Hub for more details. That is about it for this month, sorry for the vagueness and possible omissions. Cheers, CML

Shiny Side Up Talk On the first day of February a notice went out to all on the Motorcycle email list advising of a 'Shiny Side Up' talk to be held at Rydges. I counted only three VCC motorcyclists among the 200 odd that attended. The rest missed a good evening. First speaker was Brittany Morrow, who spoke about coming off the pillion at 120mph wearing a borrowed helmet, shirt, jeans and sneakers. Tumbled for several hundred metres and received abrasions and burns to 60% of her body. Pictures of the injuries and scarring were a bit sobering. Brittany has gone on to a career as a motorcycle tester and writer, and has recently taken up racing. Next up was Dr. Chris Hurren talking about Motocap, a new independent testing organisation for motorcycle clothing. Funded by Australian state government organisations and our own ACC, this group provide accurate test data without all the advertising hype. Website gives easy to understand star ratings, and if you dig deeper, full test results.Currently doing around 150 tests per year, so this site will grow. If you are in the market for motorcycle clothing, have a look at Motocap. Kevin Williams was up next, talking about being seen pros and cons of hi-vis and lighting etc. It seems there is no 'right' answer. Or a least each environment’s driving situation seems to need a different solution. Bike set up was next topic. Dave Moss is passionate about setting your bike up correctly, to improve your comfort, enjoyment and safety. Dave pointed out many areas where a 'bike can be tuned or adjusted, plus emphasised the importance of proper maintenance. It's all about the little things‌ Avalon Biddle spoke of her career in motorcycle racing. I think currently second in Championship standings, three meetings to go, she is working hard for that top spot. Avalon reinforced the words of the earlier speakers, pointing out that good gear, correct set up and attitude all make a difference. The evening was advertised to take two hours, actually took over three, A most interesting night, good speakers that knew their stuff, We probably learned a wee bit as well.. Keep an eye open for next time. Gary Arps

9-90s Report
9 - 90s
Well, here we go again. Tony and Annette Meikle had an outing organised to Waiau. That fell through for one reason or another so we went to Glentunnel Domain for a picnic. That is something we should do more often. Everyone enjoyed it. The weather was great, a good raffle, nice people and we gossiped about the ones who weren’t there. A good start to the year. Thanks Tony and Annette. March 7 Les Sloan Meet at Rolleston Community Centre at 9.55am April 10 Ray Maginnes Meet at Dunsandel Community Centre at 9.55am Look forward to seeing you all next month. Commercial Rally Saturday 23rd February 2019 Saturday 23rd February the weather forecast was not looking too good, but sixteen commercial vehicles arrived at Cutler Park ready for a good days motoring. After catching up with other people, we were asked to collect our rally number and instructions. The start of the event were the field tests, which included asking the driver, the date our vehicle registration was due and also the height of the top of the headlight on our vehicle. At the last test, we were given our start time for the timed section, so we headed off.
A very interesting run took us via Coes Ford to Leeston, where we were able to sit in the sun and enjoy our lunch in the Domain. After a while it started to cloud over, so we packed up and commenced the afternoon run, shortly afterwards we has a couple of quick showers of rain, but it cleared again. On our return to Cutler Park, we were invited to stop at the Vintage Machinery Club at Keating Park. We were welcomed and given afternoon tea and were able to look around their impressive shed and displays. The men were shown a vintage crane that came from Marble Point Quarry, just south of Hanmer.
After sometime we headed back to Cutler Park for a BBQ tea and the bar staff had kindly opened the bar. The winners for the day were announced. We were asked to bring our own meat to cook and they provided salads and bread rolls and to finish they bought out beautiful cakes that were much appreciated. Thanks to Neil and his team for a great day. David & Pam Dacombe

Dutton Garage Malvern ANZAC Day Run Thursday 25th April 2019 Reminder for those intending to enter the Malvern runs on Anzac day that the shut off for entries is 31st March 2019. No late entries can be accepted. So far we are pleased to have accepted entries from not only Canterbury branch members but also from other South Island branches and even Australia. As most of you will have participated last year I request that you have some means to attach the rally numbers to your cars, reason being that the Malvern News once again will publish the entrants list along with their numbers for the benefit of the public. In addition to the car display there will be an entrants and people’s choice so please have your pens ready and your numbers on your car. The results of this will be announced at the start briefing. It was hoped that we would have four times Bathurst winner, Greg Murphy, participating this year. I made an approach to him last year and he was keen to come but unfortunately commitments in the USA have prevented this from happening this year but he did say that the producers of the Sky Speed Show along with Steven McIvor are working to fit the Malvern Run into their schedule. Lets hope they can make it. Thanks to all of you who have entered so far, your meal choices have all been clearly stated. We are working hard to ensure that we don’t have the hold ups that we did last year, The Willows Cafe is now fully functioning so things should be a lot smoother this year. Actually it was an absolute credit to them that they achieved what they did and as far as I was concerned the quality of meal made up for any delay that I may have suffered. For any enquiries do not hesitate to call me, contact numbers are on the entry form shown in this months Hub. Malcolm McGibbon 027 433 8047 or Dave Inwood 03 327 4156

Best of British Parade Sunday 31st March 2019 I email you in relation to an event that myself (Penny Black Victorian Tearoom) and The Tannery would like to hold at The Tannery to commemorate the birthday of Sir Henry Royce. We are proposing the date of 31st March. We would like to know if, in conjunction with a handpicked selection of other external organisations, the combined Vintage Car Clubs would be interested in members with British vehicles exhibiting them at this Best of British Parade. If so, it would be great to get an idea of the number of vehicles that would likely attend. I anticipate putting an Application to Council for a road closure in the coming week. If you have any questions of any sort, please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you. Kind regards, James White, Master of the House, Penny Black Victorian Tea Room, The Tannery Boutique Shopping, Dining & Arts Emporium, 3 Garlands Road, Woolston, Christchurch. 0272211993
