Chairman’s Report With Swap Meet out of the way and the weather improving, we are now on the countdown to Christmas. Despite the weather on the Friday, the weekend went off well and I want to thank all those who assisted in organising and running the event. Once again it appears that the parts shed did very well out of the wet Friday. Thanks again to you guys. This month we have the Annual Motorcycle Rally on the 3rd followed by the Annual Vintage Rally on 10th and the Show Weekend Tour on 16 – 18th. The Homestead Run will be held on Sunday 24th. The Children’s Christmas Picnic will be held on Sunday 8 December. See the notice in this Hub. Please ensure you advise Amanda Franklin of the details of your children/grandchildren under 10 years who will be attending before the cut-off date.

You will notice that the bar tops have been installed and the finishing touches to this renovation are now complete. Thanks to Graeme Arps for the final installation last weekend, and thanks to Phil Jeeves and Mike Glenday for the varnishing, and resurfacing and painting the toilet block over Labour weekend. New signboards advertising our branch have been created thanks to Tony Becker and his team, and will be erected at the entrance to Cutler Park in the near future. It will be a busy time between now and the end of the year. If anyone is interested in assisting with the running of the Children’s Christmas party, please contact me or Amanda. Happy and safe motoring, John Coomber

Secretary’s Report

Hi All, Well Swap Meet has been and gone again. Do we really have to talk about the weather every year? So it rained, BUT is was on a different day to the last two years. Still a great event with the One Make Car Clubs display really coming forward. Cortina Club you just outdid yourselves and from the comments received well done. Maybe gate rosters on Friday /Sat/ could be tidied up a bit. Gate entry costs for all people were well received and as most of you are aware we do, like every other group, have increasing on-going costs to cover.

When will people learn that we don't allow dogs on the grounds , how many signs do we need? We don't need members thinking that they are above the rules at any time. Whether it be DOGS or TYRES. I am a pet lover and would dearly love to bring my dogs out to the grounds on occasions but understand Rules are Rules and realize some people are not comfortable around animals. It is very sad that myself and other committee members are subjected to members, who for some obscure reason, think that the rules we make don't apply to them because they have been a member since the year dot. Well these rules are for the benefit of all Club Members - so stop trying to push the boundaries and patience of the people who are on the grounds looking after the well fare of all. I am sick of wasting time on this sort of pettiness on a monthly basis. We have better things to do in the small time allocated during our meetings to trying to run this Branch in a business-like manner for ALL our members. On that sour note we shall move on to another month of fun filled adventure and trialing in our much loved cars. Regards Rod (Secretary)

Club Captain’s Report Just a short report this month. The Swap Meet seemed to be quite successful even with the washout on Friday. I would like to thank all those who helped out over the weekend along with the people who displayed their cars. The entry form for the Homestead Run is in this HUB. Linda and I will be holidaying in the North Island for all of February. Consequently we need a group of members to get together and organise and run the Annual Rally for 2019. The entry form will need to be published in the December HUB. PLEASE RING ME on 03-3274156 for information. Cheers Dave Inwood

If you have an article you would like published, a funny story or some photos of a recent event or rally you could share, please send them through to the Editor for inclusion in a future edition of The Hub.

Commercial Report

As the October report got lost in e-transit somewhere, a belated thank you to Mark Drury for hosting the September commercial noggin at his house, and providing the usual hospitality and the opportunity to have a look at the various interesting things hiding in the house and garage. The October commercial noggin was well attended at The Barn, fortunately word managed to make it’s way around on where and when, with the main point of interest for the evening being looking at shiny new vehicles parked outside. November’s noggin is as per the plan for October which had to be delayed a month, usual time of around 7.30 on Wednesday 21st November. I still have a number of this year’s annual commercial rally plaques which I haven’t got around to sending out to those who attended, and I may also have slightly lost track of who has one and who doesn’t, so if you’re missing one please let me know, contact details in the front of The Hub. Cheers, Neil

Motorcycle Report This epistle might be a bit shorter than in the past, but hopefully still has all the relevant info. Past Events. 29th September – Fish & Chip Run. A very good turnout for a run to a garage raid, then onto the Cask & Barrel Tavern in Leeston for lunch. About 12 bikes fronted up, and also the Managing Director of Braemyl Cartage and his trusty offsider driving the firm’s solitary truck…. 10th October – Motorcycle Noggin, Motorcycle Corner. Usual hardy souls turned up to spin more bull. 11 – 14 October – Swap Meet. Huge thanks to Phil, Mike & Heather for doing the toilet run over the weekend, this saved the club quite a few $$$ which would have been paid out to a contractor. Motorcyclists feature prominently as bar persons as well as on the site renewals desk and in HQ; great to see the section pulling its weight for the club as a whole. 27th October, two events on this day, the monthly Fish & Chip Run and the Girder Fork Rally to Akaroa. As these are in the future on writing this these events will be reported next month. Future Events. 3rd November – VCC Annual Motorcycle Rally. Entry form and info in the last Hub, please refer for details. 10th November – Branch Vintage Annual Rally. The section’s Ariel would be eligible to compete, if someone would like to enter it. Just contact Phil Jeeves (pmjeeves@gmail.com) or phone 338 0666 and have an experience of a lifetime! 15th November – M/C Noggin Night. For the observant amongst us please note this is a THURSDAY night. The usual date for the noggin would have been Wednesday 14th, the 2nd Wednesday. However, it has been decided to put it off ONE DAY to Thursday, and go to Smash Palace in High Street, their normal weekly biker’s night. 24th November – Monthly Fish & Chip Run, just MIGHT be a run to a shed somewhere near Ashburton.. Turn up to PMH by 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure to find out… 12 December – December Christmas Noggin. This will be at The Barn, for a BBQ meal similar to last year. You will be given your own steak etc. to cook, (cock it up – your fault..) and a selection of salads etc. available. Partners welcome, there will be a charge of $10 per person. More details in the next Hub. Graeme Barnett will be riding the section’s 1928 Ariel on the Girder Fork Rally, many thanks to Bevars Binnie for ironing out the bugs so it is more reliable, can be kick started without difficulty, and is sporting a few temporary replacement bits as the originals are fixed, repaired, or replaced. As mentioned, the bike is available for the branch Vintage Rally on 10th November. Think that’s the lot for this month, keep the rubber to the road! Cheers, CML 11

Velosolex Owners Group (VOG’s) Inclement weather on the 10th October created a delay for our October run. A go to date of Tuesday 17th was set and this turned out to be a good choice, even though the meteorologists had predicted rain around midday, we were still looking for it by the time we headed home …. whew another dry expedition. Our run this month was arranged by Bob Kinnaird and we saw yet another record breaking attendance of 13 riders arrive at the start point at the Woolston Club carpark in Hargood St this included some 1st time riders viz : John Kuipers of 9-90’s fame, Lyn Parlane and Ian Gilmour, welcome guys to our select group of ‘Solex stalwarts. Bob had organised a short interesting run around some of the quieter back streets of Woolston this time although at times we had to brave the traffic along Pages Rd & Dyers Rd, this was quite nerve wracking for some as we had several stragglers held up by traffic lights and heavy pantechnicons that thought they had more rights to the road than our delicate machines, of course they always win out in the end. Fortunately we all made it safely to this month’s destination of “Retro Classic Cars” in Garlands Rd where VCC Club member Joe Grose kindly allowed us to peruse the showroom and workshop to view all the American cars from the 50’s and 60’s that they have on show. Some very smart vehicles they have there, interesting to hear that there is more demand for left hand drive cars than our normal right hand drive British models. One vehicle there of interest to me was a “Kaiser” (never heard of that name before) I thought this was quite a spectacular car, but then that’s only my personal view! While we were there somebody pulled in with a 1957 Chevrolet that was a 1 family owner car, it had started it’s life as a taxi in New Brighton and driven by the grandfather of the guy that brought it in. The Chev’ had that old patina appearance, simply untouched with original paintwork and upholstery albeit a bit the worse for wear but good to keep it looking that way! A short ride via Radley St and Hargood St then took us back to the Woolston Club and the end of the run and lunch. Thanks Bob for organising this. Royce VOG1

October 2018 Noggin Display October Noggin Display was “Winners from the Womens & under 25 Rallies” & a Duzgo car. Congratulations to the winners of those Rallies and for displaying your magnificent vehicles. They were: 1st Women drivers Rally: Amber Inwood 1947 Chevrolet. 1st Under 25 Rally: Taylor White, 1985 Toyota Starlet. 2nd Under 25 Rally: Sophie Inwood, 1965 Ford Country Sedan Station Wagon (all 6m of gleaming paint). Three families of Inwoods, have featured lately at our recent Displays, thank you.

Also displayed, was a 1977 Duzgo B that Allan Giles, the Chairman of the West Coast branch, drove alone, from Greymouth that day, especially to display his vehicle at our Noggin and returned to Greymouth, the next day. Allan also gave an informative talk, on the history of the car. That’s what we call, a GREAT EFFORT. It will take a lot to bet that. Thanks Allan & Maria. Future Noggin Displays. This month: Swap Meet: One Make Car, Winners. December: Motor Cycles from the Girder Fork and Motor Cycle Annual Rallies. It has been suggested that we have a future Noggin display of: “Toys you still have, from your childhood.” These are toys that were yours’s, when you were you young and not purchased later in life. If anyone is interested in displaying their yesteryear Toys at a future Noggin display, (in the middle of next year?). Please express your interest, by phoning me on the number below. Is anyone interested please? Up to now, no one has shown an interest. Don Muller. Ph 3856850

9-90s Report

9 - 90s

Hi to you all Tony Becker organised this trip and it was a trip with a difference. We went for a ride up Worsleys Spur Rd to look at the new subdivisions. Very, very nice but it looks to me like Mortgage Mountain. We came back through town passed Lancaster Park which is being demolished. We went up Colombo St and through the Square to have a look at all the new buildings. From there we went to Kathryn Smith’s place to view the car collection that Errol and Kathryn had built up over the years. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality. We had another good raffle and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. We were able to sit outside in the sun for lunch. Tony Becker donated the entry fees, along with the donations, to Kathryn’s collection for Nurse Maude, in memory of Errol. Thank you Tony and Ngaire for such an interesting outing November 7 Organiser John Kuipers Meet at the Princess Margaret Hospital Carpark at 9.55am December 12 Woolston Working Men’s Club Christmas Lunch. They require pre-payment. I will take names and money at the November Outing. $25.00 per person. Cash only. No cheques. No visa. No IOU. We have a new team for next year’s outings up to December 2019. Thank you to all those who volunteered so willingly. See you all in November J K and the team

Swap Meet Report Swap Meet has once again happened, and it’s great to have another one in the bag and the machine once again slowing up, but already planning for next year. There were some things that went wonderfully well, and other things that didn’t, so let’s get the bad stuff out of the way now….. 1.

The weather! Probably one of the coldest/wettest, most miserable Friday we’ve ever experienced. The Almighty Swap Meet Convenor-In-The-Sky did his best to ruin the day despite my anxious requests. But we all got through it!

2.

The “I can get in for Nothing” brigade who go out of their way to avoid paying $10 for a weekend of treasure hunting, selling stuff, and spending quality time with mates, and then brag at how they managed it. We’ve heard stories, and more holes will be plugged next year. The known perpetrators are from outside of our branch, fortunately. Obviously these people enjoy selling raffle tickets and shovelling chook manure to keep the clubs they’re involved in financially viable, or just don’t belong to any! Did they also walk to the event so they didn’t have to buy $20 worth of petrol to get there?

3.

Traders and buyers (the latter including a number of second-hand dealers) who are set up and selling and buying as early as Wednesday, while our workforce attempt to get everything set up and running, having to work around them. This put a huge strain on our committee and volunteers as they dealt with site holders who found their neighbour had encroached on or parked a trailer on their site and buggered off, found their power connection wasn’t working because someone plugged in their 20kW hair curler, or didn’t like 10 stones on their site that were not there last year! We are very seriously considering a proposal to lock the gates to all campers and site-holders until 7am Thursday morning, so we can use our volunteered time productively. Also banning trading until 7am Friday so everyone has a fair suck on the sav. I personally witnessed dealers offering to help unload site-holder’s trailers so they could make their little piles of loot on the side, and then offer low prices before the bamboozled site holder could even think about how much he really wanted for the items.

4.

And lastly, people (again not our members) who think they can ignore the No Dogs signs, and bring them in anyway. I know of two very active female members of our branch who are terrified of dogs because of traumatic events in their childhood. This is not the only reason the signs are there, but they need to be respected.

Swap Meet Report... Anyway, that’s enough of the problem stuff – now for the good news! 1.

The weather on Saturday was brilliant, and we had one of the best and busiest days ever. Also, despite the bad weather on Friday, all site-holders reported a great day of trading, so Saturday was the true bonus day, the public attendance was well up on previous years, and there was a great atmosphere around the whole of Swap Meet.

2.

Our financial return looks as though it is the best we’ve managed for at least 3 years. We can now afford to have our clubrooms repainted and some bigger-ticket maintenance items dealt to.

3.

Over 450 site holders renewed their sites for 2019, so we can already start to look forward to another big one next year.

4.

The displays were great again this year, and some were impressive. The display oval and the one-make areas were busy with people all of Saturday, and many member’s cars helped fill the oval and gave everyone plenty to look at when they were done with the selling sites. Thanks to all who contributed to that. Congratulations too, to the Cortina Club, who aced the best club display award with their real-life-size matchbox display.

5.

The social night on Saturday was excellent. The band was great, supper was excellent, and everyone had a good time – all for only $3 per head.

6.

I want to thank in this Hub all of our very hard-working Swap Meet committee members and their partners, families, and their great circles of mates and friends. Swap Meet organisation takes all of the year, and these fantastic individuals just get on with it and it once again comes together. What a great group you guys are! Problems are discussed and solved, everyone works hard and stays positive, and makes it happen. Also thanks to all of the dozens of volunteers who offered their time, enthusiasm and skill during the weekend, whether working in the spares shed, standing alone in the oval on a freezing and wet day keeping an eye on parking and security, working at the gates, looking after money, fixing blown fuses, cleaning toilets, answering both intelligent and dumb questions in HQ, putting out road cones – and so the list goes on. Thank-you to you all for another successful Swap Meet – the club as a whole is once again indebted to you all.

Only 11 Noggins to go until Swap Meet! Thoughts too to Alan – we missed you mate! Colin Hey 23

Swap Meet Workforce

Thank you to the members who gave up their time to assist with setting up Cutler Park ready for Swap Meet: Signs, Barriers, Gates and rearranging the back room of the library for Headquarters. Putting out rubbish bins, this has been done for many years by Martin and Owen Genet. Also to all those who came out on Monday morning to clean up 30 odd acres of site holders rubbish and remove the signs, gates and barriers. By 11:30am the grounds looked as though there had never been a Swap Meet even the 150 rubbish bins had been neatly stacked away. We normally accumulate 5 to 6 tonnes of rubbish over Swap Meet time. Thanks also to Graham Arps who in his own time carried out alterations to improve security. Thanks Marilyn for the morning tea and lunch for the workers on Wednesday and Monday. To members who noticed our new gate ticket shelters: these were designed and built under the expertise of Neil Stevenson with his crew of 4 helpers. They have made working conditions far better for those on the gates particularly on Friday in the rain. After 8 years I am standing down from the position of Workforce Coordinator. Ian McKinlay - Workforce Coordinator

Swap Meet From the Parts Shed Bad weather at the time of Swap Meets is bad for those who set up sites and those who come to look, but is great for the parts shed. It feels as though each year we get one day of really rubbish weather and this is reflected in the numbers of people who visit the parts shed and in sales of items. This year the schedule for people to man the shed was made up of all Parts Committee members plus six others who are regular workers on parts shed days. As a result, there was always someone ready to assist people with enquiries or to show them where to look for whatever they were seeking. Cash taken over the weekend was an all-time high, (over $10,000) which supports the saying that every cloud (and there were plenty of big bad ones), has a silver (gold) lining. Tyres being left by site-holders have always been a problem and happily this year we ended up with only three. It is believed that the identity of the miscreant who left two of these is known and hopefully will be paying for their disposal. Our thanks is due to those workers in the Shed over the weekend, (some of whom were there between 8 and 5 each day) and also those who supported us with their humour, conversations, general repartee and of course, their cash. Ross Butler

Homestead Rally Sunday 25th November 2018 This year’s Homestead Run promises to be a memorable day, carrying on from where the Daffodil Rally day in September finished off by visiting two homesteads, the second being the well-known Flaxmere Homestead and Gardens at Hawarden. After doing a drive-by past a retirement home, we will visit the first homestead, where you can have your morning tea. We then continue on to Flaxmere Homestead just beyond Hawarden. This spectacular property is home to a stunning garden containing many art installations, and will be our lunch and afternoon venue.

The entry fee of $15 per person is for the Flaxmere visit, and the owners are going to donate the whole of the sum received to the Cancer Society (hence the connection to the Daffodil Rally).
