Chairman’s Report Last month I reported that our Hub Editor had resigned. I am pleased to announce that I have found a replacement who can also take over the webmaster duties as well, so we should be able to continue with uninterrupted service. Some details are yet to be worked out and finalised but hopefully it will be business as usual. In the meantime, send any information to the Hub at the usual email address. Thanks to Tony Meikle and Graeme Sword for a well run Women Drivers and Under 25 drivers rally. Thanks also to Leigh and Tony Craythorne for another successful awards dinner. The High Tea run has been organised this year by Terry McQuinn. Terry and I are disappointed in the very small number of entries, and the committee will consider if this should be dropped from the calendar of events next year because of lack of interest. The Show Weekend Tour this year has again been organised by Dave Inwood, who has joined our committee as an Assistant Club Captain. The Homestead Run is being organised by the Motorcycle Section. I want to thank all these people for the time and expertise they put in organising events for the members. An entry form for the Children’s Christmas Picnic is included in this Hub. Please note that this year we will hold it in conjunction with the Kaiapoi Christmas festival, and we will have an area controlled by us to park our club vehicles along with other classic vehicles, and we can have our activities in that area. This is another opportunity to use and show our cars to the public. There will be eleven different attractions in the Kids Zone available free of charge to us and there will be a marquee with stalls and food available for the adults. The Children will be able to see the parade at 2pm in the main street. Please complete your entry with details required and forward to Amanda by the due date so presents can be arranged. Swap meet is just around the corner and I want to thank all of you who have volunteered to assist Colin Hey and his team. Let’s hope this year is bigger and better than ever. Vintage Report Hi All, By the time you read October’s ‘The Hub’ several events would have been attended and enjoyed all of course orginised by a team of volunteers. It is great to see these events getting supported. Coming up in November is the Vintage Annual Rally which promises to be a great run especially with the clear weather I have ordered for the weekend. The Entry form is in this issue of The Hub along with a bit of information in the Upcoming Events section. Please note that entries must be received by 25th October, so don’t pulldown the Retard Lever and muck around getting these in. Other club events to think about attending are the Swapmeet, Grasskhanna, Show Weekend Tour, Homestead Run and the Christmas Picnic. These are all open to the Vintage section so start planning. As Rod mentioned in his report last month the North Island is running an Irishman Rally styled event call the Highland Fling Rally 24th -26th April 2020. Based in Taihape for the inaugural event, I have contacted the orginiser for more information as this event comes together. If you are interested in attending send me an email with your name, car make and possible number of crew to oldandrecovered@gmail.com . I will put you on the email list so information can be sent to you as it becomes available. Safe Motoring, Mike Milne

Hub Report Hi All, This is my last copy of The Hub. I thank all of the members who have helped me by contributing stories, photos and events over the last two years. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to produce this Club magazine every month, and I’m happy to say that the new editor will have more editing skills than I. She is currently producing another VCC magazine you may have heard of - The Beaded Wheels. Interesting fact: I have been told that I may very well be the last club member to produce our magazine. To the new editor I wish you all the best. Ka kite ano. Brendon

Commercial Report No report received at time of publication sorry.

I am sorry if you feel you are subsidising those who have not, you are helping your Branch in a positive way. A big-thank from Tony and Graeme the organizers of the U/25's & Women Drivers Rally 2019. Firstly to the Motor Cycle Section who organised and run the very good field tests which were very well received by all the entrants also the marshals, the time keepers, back ups, Andrew for the photos & certificates and to Rod for opening up the main hall and locking up after we all left. Just for your information all thirty drivers who entered were very competitive with the field tests consisting of four tests, with ten points lost for a bad result and no points lost for perfect, the results showed two entrants only losing a total of three points and one only four points. With the timed section results just as impressive with the seventeen and a half mile timed section where three of the drivers were within one minute of the correct time, two were only ten seconds off the time while the third best forty seconds off their time. (Maybe some of us older male members could get some pointers from them on timed sections and field tests so we can improve on our results). TONY MEIKLE & GRAEME SWORD

MOTORYCYCLE SECTION RUFF RUN Sunday 22nd September What may you ask is a “Ruff Run”. Well as Christopher Leith so aptly described it recently in our “Motorcycle Notes” A Ruff Run is a family orientated event where we meet in a safe place. Kids can be taught to ride a motorbike, and others can try out someone else's bike. Often more unusual bikes may be taken to a Ruff Run, either as a static display, or there to be demonstrated. And it was at one of these “Ruff Runs” back in 1995 where the writer and his “Better Half” first became hooked in the joy of riding on 2 wheels powered along by an internal combustion engine. It was the first time the writer had ever sat astride such a beast with 350cc under his control. Sunday 22nd September was once again such a day this time our next generation came along to be initiated into all this fun and frivolity. Jens Christensen’s grandson Harry James plus Jan & my grandson Reuben Cassie and his mate William were all persuaded to attend this day and boy did they enjoy it. I had brought out my Honda 50 Stepthru & a Yamaha 50cc motorbike, and Harry had the thrill of riding Philip Jeeves’ NSU “Quickly” , Reuben and William very quickly came to grips with the Honda & the Yamaha and after a hesitant start learning the intricacies of kick starting a motorbike and clutch take off’s they were off with several laps around Cutler Park and each time they returned to the “Social Corner” there was a smile from ear to ear on their faces. Harry did his own adventures around the park and seemed to be a bit more practiced than our 2. It was great to see these young uns’ having such a fantastic time. It took us all our time to flag them down and take time out for the BBQ lunch. A great attendance on the day with several interesting real motorbikes there. The Club’s Aerial was once again pulled out of the container and further R&M jobs done by Joseph McClintock’s skilled hands so that Graham Barnett can have a trouble free ride to Akaroa on the Girder Fork Rally in October. There was a lot of work done around the Social Corner in preparation for Swapmeet with everything now looking spic and span in readiness for the “Big Event” Peter Gatehouse was even in attendance planting some more of his “babies”. Another line of Natives planted along the boundary of the “Social Corner” to further enhance our grounds.

Everybody seemed to enjoy the day and what could be better than a BBQ’ed sausage in your hand and a glass of your favourite liquid in the other and the camaraderie of like minded souls. Royce Baker.

Award’s Dinner Congratulations to John Henderson, Martin Rooney, Stewart Shadbolt and Lynton Withell, who (at the Branch Award’s Dinner) were each presented with their 50-year badge and certificate from our Club Captain Southern Region, Alon Mayhew on behalf of our National President, Diane Quarrie. Alon also presented Tom Clements his 70-year certificate, a great milestone and achievement. Gold was the theme for the Branch Award’s Dinner again this year. As well as gold runners on the top tables, gold pennants adorning the stage and room dividers, the “50” year number, gold serviettes, the gold tea-light candle holders were on all the tables, setting the golden scene. Esme Humm’s beautiful flower arrangements on the top tables completed the decorations. Esme also made the flower arrangements presented to the Awardee’s wives as well as to Tracy Mayhew and Christine Coomber. Thank you, Esme. 25-year badges were presented to Kenneth Lowden, Neil Stevenson and Graeme Wood while Ian McKinlay accepted his daughter Bronwyn’s badge on her behalf. (Colin and Helen Clutterbuck and Kevin Stevenson were unable to be at the presentation and their badges will be presented at a later date.) Ian Clements, Kerry Clements, Gilbert and Andrea Dallow were presented with their 35-year badge.

Congratulations to you all. The evening was particularly special for Tom Clements and his son Ian (being presented with their 70-year and 35-year badge during the evening) and to Gilbert and Andrea Dallow being presented with their 35-year badge together. After enjoying their complimentary drinks and nibbles, the 50 and 70-year Awardees and their wives were escorted to the top tables by our wine waiters Mark Drury (sporting a black bow tie) and Greg Lamb (a red bow tie) both having Canterbury colours in mind! They were very professional as they looked after the special guests throughout the evening. Our thanks are recorded to them, as well as Amanda and Wayne Franklin (bar staff) who competently served us all. Branch members Annette and Lindsay Painter had prepared and served a delicious meal (which was spot on - they know just what our Branch members enjoy) for the 74 people attending. There was plenty for all and enough for seconds ….. and the plates were nice and hot! Thank you both. Canterbury Branch is proud of our loyal and long serving members and we look forward to another dinner to honour the Awardees next year, as this night is a much anticipated and important event in our branch calendar.

Swap Meet 2019 Friday 11th to Sunday 13th October The swap meet committee has been working particularly hard over the last month and we’re now very much prepared and ready to go with Swap Meet 2019. Others too have been working in the background getting the grounds prepared, ordering supplies and taking care of other details – thanks everyone! All we need to hope for now is a good solid fine weekend!

Thanks to all members who have volunteered for the various rosters. We only have a few gaps to fill, and hopefully these will be taken care of on noggin night, but if you do get a last-minute phone call for help, please be prepared to do your bit. All we need is 2 hours of your time for this once-a-year event, and we don’t believe this is too much to ask. Just a reminder about the rules introduced this year. There is to be absolutely NO selling on sites until daybreak on Friday morning. Anyone found to be selling before this will not be able to renew their site for 2020 – a list of offenders will be held at the renewals desk. I have covertly overheard several conversations at other swap meets with people saying how pleased they are that this has been introduced. One person said that he took Friday off work and got there early specially to look for things he wanted, only to hear that “the place had been worked over the day before”. We also need to be aware that the general public (who we largely rely on for our fundraising) need to be assured that it is worth their while coming out on Saturday and Sunday. Site holders packing up early and leaving on Friday night or early on Saturday is not a good look. A reminder too that you can only set up selling sites from Thursday morning onwards. Any goods you bring out must be covered until Friday morning.

The parts shed will be open and selling on Wednesday 9th as it would for any Wednesday, but it will be closed for business on Thursday for preparation for swap meet, and then open from Friday morning onwards. As usual, there will be a great selection of food and drinks available from numerous outlets on site, and there will be a great band playing at the Saturday night social. I hope you enjoy the weekend, find or sell those bargains, and most of all, enjoy catching up with old mates from all around the country again. Colin Hey 16

Show Weekend Tour 15-16 & 17th November 2019 As previously notified the tour will be centred around Blenheim. Assemble for the start at 9am in New World Kaiapoi Car Park. We will travel up via State Highway 1 on the Friday stopping for morning tea around Cheviot and lunch around Kaikoura. Actual locations yet to be decided. Take your own food and drinks for the above or purchase en route. On Saturday morning we will assemble at the VCC Clubrooms at Brayshaw Park for morning tea around 9.30am before the start of our Saturday run. Morning tea will be supplied by VCC Marlborough for $10 per head (pay on the day) – consists of scones, savouries and a cake etc. Rally sheets to be handed out post morning tea. Accommodation available for the 15th and 16th at

Admirals Motor Lodge Phone 0800 377 222. Or Alpine Motel Phone 0800 10 19 31. Inform them you are with Canterbury VCC. Any other questions: - Phone Dave Inwood - (03) 327-4156.

Motorcycle Report Soon the Spring Equinox will have passed signalling the start of the time the sun is in the Southern Hemisphere, and making the days longer and warmer for those motorcycle runs coming up. Past Events 31st August – Fish & Chip Run. About a dozen riders started on a run out to Sumner and over the newly opened Evans Pass road to Lyttleton. Around the bays to Governors Bay, Teddington, Gebbes Pass, with a pie stop at the Gebbes Gardens Café on SH 73. From there it was a run to the Famous Grouse in Lincoln. 7th September – Women’s and Young Driver’s Rallies. The motorcycle section committee assisted both these rallies, and there was good support from the branch by way of entries. 11 September – Noggin Night. Those who turned up for this event would have been pleasantly surprised with the supper that was provided by the committee….. This was a Nostalgia Night, plenty of photo albums full of snaps of events and personalities from the 1970’s up to 2010 and later. People who have since died, people who look a hell of a lot older today, they were all there!

22 September – Ruff Run & VIC’s. We didn’t do the VIC’s, but a working bee instead, planting 3 dozen trees between the M/C camping area and the Swap Meet sites. It was good to see two or three young lads being taught how to ride a motorcycle. Hopefully, the lads will be joining the club and furthering their knowledge and experience. Also, good to see the club’s 1927 Ariel out, and running. Look forward to seeing it compete on the Girder Fork Rally and Annual Motorcycle Rally coming up soon. 28th September – Fish & Chip Run. Will be reported on next month. Future Events.

9th October – Motorcycle Noggin, at The Casting Shop, 5A Watts Road, commences 7.30 pm. Just about the whole staff will be working that night just so we can see the various processes involved in the casting of different metals. The "Lost Wax" process will be demonstrated, and also the boxed sand casting method. Boxed sand casting mouldings will be broken out and fettled. This promises to be an excellent Noggin, The Casting Shop is going all out to give us their best experience. Please support your committee and The Casting Shop; we look forward to seeing you there.

Motorcycle Report 19 – 20th October – Annual Girder Fork Rally to Akaroa. More details and entry forms elsewhere, but normally starts from Liquorland, Amyes Road, Hornby, about 10.15 am start, overnight in Akaroa. See elsewhere for more information. 26th October – Fish & Chip Run. Leaves PMH at 10.30 am, meet 10.15 am. Nothing planned so far.

2nd November – Annual Motorcycle Rally. See elsewhere for more details, and entry forms. 14th November – Motorcycle Noggin. MOVED from usual Wednesday 13th to Thursday; at Smash Palace’s Motorcycle evening, 172 High Street, central city. Come from 7.30 pm, have a beer and a natter. 24th November – Homestead Run. Yeah, I know, this is normally a car event. However, this year it is being organised by the Motorcycle Committee, and will be moving into pastures new, as it were. More info next month, and elsewhere. Entries in this month’s Hub, GET YOUR ENTRIES IN – or you’ll miss out on a great day out.

30th November – Fish & Chip Run. This will be the last F&C run for the year, and we have a good one for you. An interesting destination in South Canterbury has been planned, to see motorcycles and “stuff”. Come on the run to find out all about it!! Thank is about it for now, keep the rubber to the road, and enjoy your motorcycling. Cheers, CML THE CLUB BIKE Many of you may be aware - but I suspect some are not - that the branch owns vehicles for use by members on club events. The branch owns a pre-war fire engine, a pre-war truck, and a lesser known motorcycle. Both the fire engine and the truck are stored at Cutler Park and have custodians to look after them, but the bike has been somewhat hidden away. We are looking for somebody to act as custodian for the bike. It is a 1928 ARIEL, 600cc with a three speed, hand change gearbox. Currently it is registered and warranted but we are looking for a custodian. Could that someone be you? If you would like the privilege of “owning” one of these, but without the financial input, please give me a call. Custodianship is not onerous - you would just need to keep it clean, and maybe do some routine maintenance- like checking oil and lubricating the chain occasionally. It could be stored at your place, or better still, kept on display in the clubrooms. If you think this could be you, please give me a call on 338 0666 or 0220 25 99 24. Philip Jeeves Motorcycle Convenor 19

Borrowed from the last issue of the Banks Peninsula Branch “Dripfeed” and slightly amended (without permission, of course…..) Given that the BP Branch is one of the few branches that provides opportunities for members to exercise their cars on a track, the need for a new speed steward continues to be something their Branch is eager to solve. I’m sure they would appreciate hearing from anyone who could possibly fulfil this role, even if they are from the Canterbury Branch. If you are sports-car or a race-minded enthusiast and would be interested in having a go at the role, please contact their Branch Chairman, Craig Keenan on 322 1006, or Secretary Ron Hasell on 942 1105. The role is more administrative than competitive, and both are prepared to share their knowledge and mentor any new person into the role. I’m sure whether or not you actually need to ‘convert’ to Banks Peninsula Branch membership could be easily negotiated one way or the other? They also note that competitive fields in our (VCC) class are diminishing and at the recent Levels meeting, there were only seven entrants, which reduced to four after lunch. Don Gerard, who competes in his very tidy and surprisingly reliable Mistral, is keen to revive racing interest, and has suggested that at the 2020 Skope meeting at Ruapuna over Waitangi weekend, a lunchtime parade should be organised with as many historic track cars as they can muster, with suitably informed commentary. The feeling is that there are many significant cars sitting in garages that haven’t been driven for some time. They would like to contact the owners and see how we can help to get these important cars either back on the track or at least onto a trailer so they can be on display at Ruapuna, and thus stimulate interest and involvement in our branch of motorsport. Phil Mauger will bring the Cropduster, the Murray Maxwell A7 has been offered by Geoff Edwards, the Pidgeon Bugatti will be there, as will the Ransley Riley and so on. So if own or if you are aware of an historic car that hasn’t seen daylight for some time, contact the owner, or please tell them. And of course, think about becoming a speed steward. Also mentioned in the Dripfeed is that foundation BP member Tom Cloudesley has written to the BP branch, to tell them that he is not well, is confined to his home , and has a terminal illness. He is also well known to many Canterbury branch members and was regularly seen out and about in either of his beautiful 1920’s Packards. He wishes the club all the best, and expresses his appreciation of the wonderful times he has had with the club over the years. His daughter Sandra will stay on as a member and use all of his cars. Tom would appreciate it if anyone would like to go round and see him and have a bit of a chat. He lives at 62 Stanbury Avenue in Somerfield, and his phone number is 337 4002. Colin Hey 20

September 2019 Noggin Display

Our September Noggin Display was, “Toys you owned when you were a Child & Antique Toys.” What a great collection of interesting toys and memories the members brought along. There were a truck, carts, a wheelbarrow and service station, either made by their grandfather or father. A well loved aged golly & teddy, a lovely tin plate boat, model aeroplane, books, doll, money boxes, cars, motorcycle and numerous other goodies, that made a great display. Thank you to the following members for displaying their “ Toys they owned when they were a Child”. Leigh Craythorne, Mike Glenday. Annette Meikle, Jim Young, Beryl Brass, Mark Dury. Don Bennetts, Arthur Poll and Neil Shaskey. Also a BIG thank you for the time and huge effort Bonny & Peter Rhodes went to getting their marvelous “Antique Toy” display to the Noggin. They would have spent many weeks sorting through their collection and packing the toys for the display, having to unpack them all when they returned home. A Great display. Future Displays. October: (this month) Winners from the Women & Young Drivers Rally. November: Winner of the One Make Car Club Display, at the Swap Meet. December: Electric Cars, Old and New. Don Muller. VELOSOLEX OWNERS GROUP Been there done that and we have the pictures to prove it. September’s run was ably organised by Bob Kinnaird. It was an interesting journey that we had done last year starting and finishing at the Richmond Club, it didn’t matter as getting out on our Solex’s is what it’s all about and with the sun shining and the temperature at around 8 degrees 12 keen “bikies” headed off for an adventure into the “wild”. Once again we ventured into the Red Zoned Roads of Dallington viz Locksley Ave & River Road - wow the condition of these roads has deteriorated a lot in the last 12 months and I think eventually won’t even be navigable with the amount of potholes and flooded areas that are now appearing. Probably the only transport suitable for here will be horses and pedestrians and foolhardy “VOG’s”. Fortunately these roads are closed to vehicular transport. Our destination for this month was to view once again the collection of Indian motorbikes belonging to Paddy of The Pumphouse & Smash Palace. What an amazing collection Paddy has and all extremely well restored and in fine running order. A few of these bikes are used at the annual Burt Munroe Challenge and raced with great success on Oreti Beach and also the well renowned “Classic Motorcycle Mecca NZ Hill Climb Champs” . Paddy’s collection encompasses Indians from 1919 right through to one of the very latest Indian Scout motor cycles loaded with all sorts of electronic technology, what a comparison to the very early 1919 bike. A big thankyou to Paddy for allowing us to view this collection.

After leaving Paddy’s place in Linwood Ave it was a quick run back to the Richmond Club for our lunch stop. But this ride can be a bit nerve wracking when you’re exposed to other vehicles on the roads, and there’s lots of it in this area. Changing lanes and making right hand turns can be a bit disconcerting when you’ve not actually got a lot of “grunt” to zip into the outer lanes and safely turn at the lights but fortunately we all made it. Our run this month was not without incidence and 2 bikes ended up on the back up trailer, John Thomson’s mighty 3800 model caused him some grief with stuttering and spluttering coming along Locksley Ave, lots of pedalling and muttering from John, we think it is a fuel problem. John will now have a challenge over the next month to get his usually trusty stead up and running again. The Trophy winner this month was Gary Thompson, he thought he had an issue with his bike at one stage, when he was “wrapping” on the throttle along River Rd to overtake a fellow VOG’er and alas the engine faltered and came to a stop, mmmm thought Gary what’s gone wrong here??? Hee hee he had run out of fuel. So a top up from the on board reserve supply and he was on the road again. Yet another great day out, thanks to Bob for organising. Royce VOG 1 24

Upcoming Events Gymkhana Day Sunday 27th October 2019 A Grasskhana is being set up to take place on Sunday October 27th (Labour Weekend) at the Branch grounds, Cutler Park. As previously reported, the event will take place in the grass area by the power cables, parallel with our boundary with Steam Scene and is open to entries for any Club eligible vehicles. Four different courses will be set up and hopefully, each entrant will have the opportunity of testing their skills on each one twice with their best times being used in the compilation of the final results. This occasion is a great opportunity for some of our younger members to demonstrate their driving abilities and have a fun day out in their or the family’s vehicle. Vehicles need to be in a safe condition and importantly, the battery must be firmly secured. I’m still looking for some assistance on the day, time-keeping and marshalling so if you are able to help, please contact me: - Ross Butler, Phone 352-3160 or 021 314-221. Also, a photographer would be great, so if you are able to take photos for the Hub, and maybe a video, please give me a call.

If wet, we will look at running the event on the next day, Labour Day.

Upcoming Events VCC Annual Vintage Rally Saturday 9th November 2019 Starting at Princess Margret Hospital Car Park 10:30 am The rally this year will follow some of the earliest roads and routes in Canterbury. Total distance covered is approximately 70Miles with a mix of tar seal and shingle roads. The route is predominately on the hills of Banks Peninsula , so there are hills to traverse some with moderately steep but in short sections. Other hills have long climbs to practice you change down skills. The reward for this is some fantastic views of Christchurch , Canterbury, South Canterbury, rugged Coastlines and the Southern Alps. There is one section of shingle which is unavoidable however it is in good maintained condition and has a nice compacted base. ( no deep lose shingle) It should present no problems for low slung cars or motorcycles. Other sections have options to avoid the shingle as they are more of a stock route ( steep with deep shingle). Lunch will be in a local domain with Toilets available . There is good shelter from the wind ( if any) but very little shelter from the sun and rain, please plan for this. After lunch will be some more hills great views finishing with a easy drive to the finish at the TaiTapu Hotel. All Club eligible cars welcome . Vintage cars will be competing for the Ken & Kenneth Lowden Trophy, Rae Trophy and Eason Trophy All prizes will be presented at the December Noggin. Entry form is in this ‘The Hub’. Entry Fee : $20.00 (includes plaque and nibbles)

Entries need to be received by 25th October 2019 to receive plaque.

$30.00

For new members to our club the Homestead Run is open to any club eligible vehicle/motorcycle. The run is centred around visiting usually two to three historical homesteads in Canterbury during the day. In the past we have always visited historical homesteads but this doesn’t mean that a new home could not be visited. We view the outside of the home only along with the garden. These homes are private property and quite often on a working farm, so respect the property please, this includes no dogs on the properties in cars. Provide your own picnic lunch. The run will start at Waihora Domain, 130 Park Road, Motukarara. (Look for the DOC Nursery & The Little River Rail Trail start) Arrive 9am onwards as the organisers would like cars to start leaving the area at 9.45am. A short run will be made to our first homestead and then a run through to Pigeon Bay for lunch and our second home of the day. There is a 3km section of steep sealed road down into Pigeon Bay. Follow the directions of parking marshalls please. Portable toilets will be available at each stop.

Kindly sponsored again this year by Euro City Ltd In 2020 the Featured Group will be an A-Z of Motor Vehicles. We are aiming to have a motor vehicle representing each letter of the alphabet. This may be a make or model. There will be a mixture of cars, commercials and motorcycles. Also we expect a mix of veterans, vintage and PV’s… manufactured in UK, Europe and USA. We currently have several cars coming in 2020 that have not been to ADW before. These include NZ’s second Duesenberg, our first L29 Cord, and a Stutz to name a few. We are still looking for a “Napier” vehicle to represent the letter “N”. I am also trying to find the owner of the Willys Knight roadster circa 1929-31 era that has the unusual paint design on the doors. We would also like to get leads on vehicles or vehicle models starting with letters Q, U, X, Y, Z. Please email any leads or ideas to stevetrott@xtra.co.nz asap. For 2020 the annual rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a touring run plus a picnic lunch at a great lunch venue.
