Chairman’s Report Spring is here, following a very successful Daffodil Rally on 25 August. Thanks to all those who helped to make the day a success and to all those who participated in our National Day. A Special thanks to Colin Hey who organised this event again and even baked the scones the night before . I call that going above and beyond the call of duty. Also a vote of thanks for Shirley Wills and her team in the kitchen who baked more scones and provided the morning tea for hundreds. So far our events have raised $100,000.00 for the Cancer Society, and we hope this year will see our contribution increased again. At the National AGM in Greymouth, it was decided that we will continue to support the Cancer Society for the next three years while our event is developed, then review whether to support another organisation in future. The AGM was a very enjoyable weekend on the Coast as well as an interesting and positive meeting looking towards our future. Once again we were privileged to have our founder member Andrew Anderson present and he gave a very good introduction to the meeting, which set the tone of our discussions and gave the delegates a few things to think about looking to the future. At 90 years, Andrew has not lost any of his fire or enthusiasm for our club, and it is always a treat to hear him speak. There were a number of Canterbury members present, and I am sure they felt embarrassed as I did when Andrew drew attention to the fact that Canterbury Branch with 1300 members could not elect a Club Captain to its committee. He challenged the complacency which has crept into our ranks and reminded us that the club was formed by the equivalent of todays “boy racers”, and implored us to make our events and organisation attractive to the young vehicle enthusiasts who are often frowned upon by many of our older members instead of being supported and encouraged to participate in our events. A breakdown of the age of our members is included in Rod’s report on the AGM. This bears out what I have been saying for a number of years. A presentation by Gaynor Terrill on the future direction of our club pointed out that sixty six percent of our members are over 67 years of age and 34 percent are under that age. Our aim has to be to reverse those figures in the next five years otherwise our membership could shrink by a third over the next decade. Forget about what we used to do decades ago, and start thinking in a positive and forward thinking fashion, encompassing the views of our children and grandchildren, and support and encourage those members and potential members who suggest new ideas or ways of doing things. Our Registrar Rod Brayshaw gave an interesting presentation on the global view of the old car movement from the perspective of FIVA. Rod is an elected member of the FIVA technical committee and attends international meetings in Europe twice a year. 6
Chairman’s Report... Rod and I attended the FIVA General Assembly in Budapest in 2014 where their Technical Committee were grappling with the concept of upgrading their FIVA identity card system. Rod spoke to them about the VIC system we have developed here and as a result, they asked him to join their Technical Committee and they have since produced a new card system which is based on our VIC card system. Rod’s attendance at these meetings means we are kept abreast of the latest trends and thinking in Europe, and we all know that our politicians quickly follow the latest trends in the EU. It is important that you read and think about the following comments from Patrick Rollet, the President of FIVA. Patrick Rollet called on clubs to embrace technology to reach a new and younger audience. “Many clubs ostracise youngsters, both vehicles and members,” he said. “We must change our habits: create a ‘young’ section in the club, run by a younger person, to design simple, dynamic and fun outings.” Ensure there are several under-40s on the main committee. Clubs around the world are arguably in the last throes of a golden age, seeing a sad decline in new members because of the lack of younger people. Young petrol heads still exist, but all they need to organise a gathering are a few Face book messages: no road book, rally plates or fuss. Likewise, they use their informal network to find a mechanic or surf the web for parts, so why join a club? Too many clubs ignore these profound technological and sociological changes, mismanaging their efforts to attract young people, to welcome them and satisfy their desire for informal, fuss-free events. They organise hidden outings, almost out of sight, whereas a display of historic vehicles offers a marvellous museum in movement – free of charge – to delight and fascinate passers-by. Enjoy the Vintage movement (fashion, accessories etc); organise free presentations at events for the public. Team up with popular events run by others; exhibit at hypermarkets or fairs wherever there is an audience, especially young people. We must show our vehicles. It is vital to avoid being too narrow in our definition of historic motoring. You might only be interested in vintage Bentleys, but please don’t criticise your neighbour’s passion for mopeds, motorbikes, busses or customised American muscle cars in fuchsia with turquoise stripes, or Japanese vehicles. They’re all an important part of our history, culture and the rich diversity of classic vehicles on our roads. No one disputes the value of authenticity – and FIVA will continue to applaud it – but beware the risk of seeming elitist, when young people often want to own a historic vehicle simply because it is different, quirky, unique, even iconoclastic. Finally, and above all, keep enjoying your motoring, and communicate that pleasure to others, because it’s down to us as individual enthusiasts, to ensure we don’t lose the right and the ability to drive on the roads 50 years from now.

Chairman’s Report... Other issues of note from the AGM were a proposal to change the logo and branding of our club to better reflect our activities today, and George Kear has been elected to the management committee. Congratulations to George and others elected. Due to pressure of work, Tony Haycock has stood down as the 2021 Rally Director, and will remain part of the rally committee as the management committee representative, replacing Greg Terrill who has now been appointed Rally Director. Many of you will remember Greg as the National President from 2006 to 2009 and he was also the Rally Director for the 2000 International Rally held at Mystery Creek in Hamilton. Greg is aiming for a ten percent attendance at this rally, so I hope you are all thinking about this in January 2021. A reminder about the Awards dinner on 14 September. Please contact a committee member or Leigh Craythorne for your tickets. They will be available from the bar on noggin night. I believe there has been a good entry to the Women Drivers rally and combined young drivers rally. I know you will enjoy this event and the lunch provided. An entry form for the High Tea and Night Trial is included in this Hub. It is important that you advise me by the closing date if you want to join us for the meal at Armadillo’s Restaurant in Belfast, as there is a limit to the number they can cater for. Those of you who want to join the run, but do not want to partake of the meal can also enter, indicating that you do not want the meal. Payment for the meal is to be made individually at the restaurant, but you must advise us by closing date so meals can be ordered. IMPORTANT NOTICE: I have just been advised that our Hub Editor and Webmaster has resigned his position. Brendon has done an outstanding job with the Hub and also the website, providing us with online entry forms for events. We are very sorry to lose Brendon and thank him for the outstanding contribution he has made to this branch. Brendon has indicated he will train and assist his replacement and will continue in the meantime, but we must find a replacement in the next couple of months. PLEASE give some thought to whether you or someone you know would be prepared to take on this important task and contact me or Brendon as soon as possible. Remember, the Hub is the voice of our branch, and the main form of contact and information sharing within the branch. The Children’s Christmas picnic this year will be a departure from the traditional one held in previous years at Cutler Park. It will be held on Saturday 8 December in conjunction with the Kaiapoi Christmas festival and parade. We have been invited to join them and partake in all their attractions free of charge and we will have our own area set aside to do our own activities. Many years ago we used to combine with them for this event. 8
Chairman’s Report... They are keen to see our cars displayed as part of their event. This will be a fun event, and another opportunity to join other community groups and promote our club to the public. I will be meeting with organisers to finalise details over the next month. Happy and safe motoring John Coomber

Vintage Report Hi All, well spring is just around the corner which will bring warmer weather, longer days and more time in the shed tinkering. For those that haven’t had their cars out over the winter now is the perfect time to get the car ready for some great rallies, events and swapmeets that the club has planned. Keep note of what events are coming up in The Hub, the website and the ‘Calendar of events’ card. We are currently in the planning stages for the Vintage Annual Rally which is shaping up to be a great run. This year the run will be open to any club eligible vehicle. (Vintage vehicles only will be eligible for awards and trophies). The idea behind this is to give all club members greater opportunity to use their vehicles and attend rallies and events with like minded people. The Annual Veteran Rally and Vintage Annual Rally are on the same weekend, so a good chance to put the effort in and have a weekend of historic motoring. The entry form will be in the October Hub. For those that don’t know me a quick introduction. I live in Halswell with my wife Sacha and three children Taylor, Josh and Aidan. I have had an interest in anything old and mechanical for as long as I can remember mostly due to my father Bob Milne and Uncle Mike Lawson. Currently we own a 1929 A7 Scout car,109 Military Land Rover and Taylor’s building a A7 Special. I have stepped into the Vintage Conveners role to help out (and give back) to the club that keeps historic motoring alive in Canterbury. Our branch is by far the largest in the country, yet we are still struggling to fill some roles on the committee. It is important that these roles are filled, so give it a go and put your hand up. Please remember that this your club. Annual Vintage Rally Saturday 9th November Safe Motoring, Mike Milne

Swap Meet Report By the time you read this report we will only be about 5 weeks away from Swap Meet. The pace of organisation is now picking up, and all the final details are starting to fall into place. About 3 weeks ago we took delivery of the first of the two ‘new’ 20-foot containers that will be the new home for all of the Swap Meet equipment after the event. These are being located behind the spares shed. Another container will arrive before Swap Meet, and eventually the gap between them will be filled in and roofed over to provide better storage for the numerous signs and equipment needed to run the event. The plan is then to remove the old container and shed just north of the Barn and tidy that area up. Thanks to everyone who has filled in and returned the volunteer forms so far. There are still many gaps in the duties, and as I have said before, every able-bodied member needs to do their bit for this event by volunteering just a couple of hours over the course of the weekend – this is the only time we really expect it as it’s our one and only club fundraising activity for our own branch during the year. If you haven’t yet filled your form in, please do so as soon as possible. There has been no negative feedback regarding the new Swap Meet regulations that were published in the July Hub. In short, there is no general access to the grounds for site-holders except to erect shelter prior to Thursday 10th October, and there is to be absolutely no trading until 7am on Friday 11th October. The parts shed will operate as usual on Wednesday 9th October. All site-holders should have by now received the forms to fill out to list your goods in the Swap Meet handbook – please return these promptly to ensure your listing gets placed. Most of all, get busy between now and October 11th to sort your surplus treasures out in time for our biggest event of the year. Regards Colin Hey

Daffodil Day Report
I couldn’t believe our luck as the weather forecast for the Daffodil Rally day on Sunday 25th August got better and better during the week. Sure enough, Sunday finally arrived and we got another fine, warm and clear day – 3 years in a row of near perfect weather for the event! I wish we could manage the same for Swap Meet! All the preparation leading up to the day went well. Seven routes were set – 4 changed slightly from last year and 3 new ones to mix up the destinations and give John Stewart and Ray & Nancy Drury a break this year, as both are re-organising their displays. Dozens of emails and ‘phone calls to promote the event, and to organise the many volunteers who had offered to help on the day. Two hours on the Friday to collect printing, trophies, and a few promotional items from the Cancer Society. A few hours at the clubrooms on Saturday to set up the hall and the grounds, and we were once again ready to roll. I was first in the Cutler Park gates at 7.15am, to be followed soon after by our Rod Thrower, John & Christine Coomber, and Alan & Shirley Wills. Shirley was once again our kitchen whizz – directing operations to bake, and apply jam and whipped cream to 300 scones that would disappear as people registered and then returned back again after the runs. Not long after, the Avonhead Rotary group arrived to set up the BBQ that dispensed late breakfasts and then lunch to the hundreds of people that turned up in well over 300 vehicles. What a huge variety of vehicles we had this year. Everything from veteran Model T’s, right through to a brand-new Aston Martin. Cars, vans, campers, utes, light trucks, motorcycles and even trikes. Some cars I had never seen before. All accommodated easily within our grounds, but filling up the whole area from the motorcyclists’ compound right through to the tunnel barn. The registration area inside the clubrooms was very, very busy. A great team taking the money and registration forms, selling the tickets for the Devonshire Teas, and dispensing the rally route instructions. People everywhere, and the kitchen crew busy pouring tea and coffee, clearing tables and keeping everything flowing. At 10am vehicles began departing the grounds to head off on their chosen rally route. Once again the most popular were the longer runs – one heading west beyond Darfield, and another travelling through the Lyttelton tunnel and heading over the hill along the recently re-opened Sumner Road over Evans Pass. There were reports from that run that a ute had lost a rear axle and gone off the road, but we’re unsure if this was someone on the run or not. Thankfully no-one was hurt. 14
Daffodil Day Report...
Probably around 2/3rds of the vehicles came back to Cutler Park after the runs, and were able to enjoy a relaxed lunch outdoors in our grounds from the BBQ or their own picnic hampers. Most took the opportunity to check out all of the vehicles and talk to other enthusiasts, or catch up with friends and fellow club members – overall a great friendly atmosphere that everyone seemed to be enjoying very much. At 2pm the prizegiving got underway. It began by drawing the meat raffle – this alone raised about $600 on the day (special thanks to Rod Thrower and Chris Leith who looked after this on the day). Kate Reid, the Chair of the Canterbury & West Coast Branch of the Cancer Society spoke briefly about the work the Society does and where the funding goes, and then handed out the trophies. She and husband Matthew took part in the event in their MG TD. The prize-winners were as follows: Best Veteran – Alistair and Denise McKenzie – 1915 Ford Model T Roadster Best Vintage – Jack Porter – 1928 Ford Model A Raceabout Best Classic – Craig and Elizabeth Keenan – 1935 Talbot Saloon Best Dressed Couple – Shirley and Bruce Shadbolt - 1928 Reo Most Impressive Chrome – Peter and Christine Craig – 1959 Chrysler New Yorker Best Motorcycle – Syd Martin – 1970 Norton Commando Fastback Peoples’ Choice – Dave Trezise – Boom Fighter trike Cancer Society Choice (chosen by Kate & Matthew Reid) – Barbara and Tim Palmer – 1967 Fiat Bambina. All up another really successful event, raising a total of around $5,000 for the Cancer Society – a wonderful organisation that touches all of us at some time in our lives, either directly or through a friend or family member. They do tremendous work, and it’s our privilege to be able to give them something back whilst at the same time doing something we really enjoy. A very special thanks to all who assisted on the day. It could not have been done without you, and I really do appreciate very much everything you all did to make the day such a success. Thanks too to everyone who came out and supported the event. Motorcycle Report Spring will have officially started by the time you are reading this, and with it come longer days, warmer temperatures, and more opportunities for motorcycle runs, tours, and rallies. Past Events. 27th July – Fish & Chip Run. This dawned a nice, sunny day, so the decision was made to run to The Hill Top Hotel, but on arrival it was closed for the winter (?). The 8 or so motorcyclists on the run then decided to run through to the Devaucelles Hotel for lunch, and then enjoy a run back to the Tai Tapu afterwards. 3rd August – Round the Bays Run. Only 3 riders started, a quick dash towards the Wheatsheaf where they ran into the owner of the Teddington Garage. He invited then to view his on-going projects, and then all went home. Nice sunny day, after a less than promising start to the day. Very short Round-the-Bays run… 14th August – Noggin Night. Held at Dutton Garage, Carlyle St. About 28 - 30 attended the Noggin there, and by all accounts was a very enjoyable evening. There were some very nice, very expensive vehicles on display for sale… 18th August – Working Bee and Ruff Run. About 15 – 18 people turned up to deal to the three trees that had been felled at the Motorcycle Corner shelter. By the end of a hard day’s work the trees has been completely de-limbed, cut into rings, and about 75% split into firewood. This was stacked to dry, and all the slack was heaped up ready for burning off. Many thanks to those who helped. 24th August – Working Bee. A small group of 6 people met to finish off the work of the previous Sunday. All rings now split into firewood, and also a huge log over a metre in diameter and 4 meters long behind the Parts Shed was sawn up and split into firewood ready to be stacked at The Barn. Thanks also to this group. 25th August – Daffodil Rally for Cancer Society. A very good turnout of motorcycles for this event, and very well supported by NZ Trikes and the Norton Owners Club. Thanks for your support. 31st August – Fish & Chip Run. Will be reported on next month… Future Events. 7th September – Women’s and Young Driver’s Rallies. Motorcycle Section has been volunteered to assist with field tests. If anyone can help please turn up at Macleans Island 9.30 am, and let Phil Jeeves know at 0220259924.

Motorcycle Report 11 September – Noggin Night. Decided to have a Nostalgia Night in the Barn. A large box of old photo albums, slides and other memorabilia has been located in the Club Captain’s office. These go back into the 1970’s; you probably will see a number of people who have since passed away. 22 September – Ruff Run & VIC’s. If you have a motorcycle that does not have a VCC Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) then this is the event for you. You need this VIN to enter national Rallies and the like. 28th September – Fish & Chip Run. Meet at PMH Hospital, 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. Not sure what has been planned, so turn up and find out… 9th October – Motorcycle Noggin, at The Casting Shop, Watts Road. 19 – 20th October – Annual Girder Fork Rally to Akaroa. More details elsewhere, but normally starts from Liquorland, Amyes Road, Hornby, about 10.15 am start, overnight in Akaroa. See elsewhere for more information. 2nd November – Annual Motorcycle Rally. More info next month. That is about it for this month, Cheers, CML.
19
Motorcycle Section Working Bee 15 club members turned up on a very chilly Sunday morning to tidy up the Social Corner. 3 large old pine trees had to be cleared from the site which had been felled earlier. 8 chainsaws sprung into action making the job look easy. Several others helped clear away the branches and got the site ready for stacking of the new logs once a team had split them in the afternoon. A BBQ lunch was enjoyed and many hands made light work. Many thanks to all those who were involved your efforts are truly appreciated.

9-90s Report
9 - 90s
Hi to you all Barbara and Alan Hill organised a perfect day. Sunshine, a lovely ride around the bays and ending at the Machinery Club on McLeans Island. It couldn't have been better. The Machinery Club made us very welcome. They have a very nice big shed with all kinds of interesting historic machinery and their grounds are immaculate and perfect for big groups like the 9-90s. The Hills donated the Entry Fees, about $100, to the Machinery Club. We had a successful raffle. The 9-90s Christmas Fund was the biggest winner. Last, but not least, we wish Barbara a speedy recovery. Alan tried to take all he credit for the rally but I corrected him. We are sure Barbara had a big input. We had 50 cars on this run. September 11 David and Neroli Johns Meet at the Airforce Museum Carpark at 9.55am. We will have a guided tour and look around. There is a cafe there. At 12 noon we will be departing for the Showgrounds for a little tour, lunch and the raffle. October 9 Graeme Sword and JK are the organisers. Meet at the New World Carpark, Charles St, Kaiapoi at 9.55am. Destination Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village where George and Mary Ann Keir are our hosts and are organising a finger food lunch. Mary Ann needs to know how many to cater for so let me know if you haven't already put you name down. Please bring your Vintage car if possible. Looking forward to seeing you all next month. 9-90s Outing
Winter Run The weather was chilly but fine for the Winter Run today, Sunday 28 July. There was 18 cars at the start, with 16 actually doing the 90k round trip Run. A good range of cars from the late 1920's to the early 1980's. We tiki toured out through back roads West of Rolleston, enjoying all the rounda-bouts left, right, and straight through. One Mk11 Escort Reddish in colour got there left and there straight ahead a bit wrong, when we had finished the rally said they were testing us to make sure we were reading our instructions correctly and not just following the car in front. The sun when it broke through made the snow on the Southern Alps look amazing. Traveling along more country roads we passed some really big Stock and Crop farms near Kirwee. Heading towards Aylesbury 5 cars overshot the Right turn into Station Road. You all know who you are !!!! We then drove through the new Sub Divisions at West Melton, Wow some $1million Homes out there. A very enjoyable well thought out run through some lovely countryside and some Very Very nice Sub divisions. Then back to The Barn for lunch in front of the nice warm Fire. Kevin and Claire Campion

VELOSOLEX OWNERS GROUP August run – The VOG’s come out of hibernation once again Tuesday Aug 13th On the road again we couldn’t wait to get back on the road again. What a great morning the 13th turned out to be after a weekend of rain and cool temperatures. Although it was a tad cool (2 degrees in fact) riding out to the start point at Lincoln but the sun soon shone through and we were in for a brilliant day. Eleven riders hit the starting block today. One of our newer members Alastair Wright took the helm this time which was great as it gave VOG 1 time off from the rigours of mapping out yet another run. A nice simple ride was install for us with a straight run down the biking trail along Boundary Road all the way through to Rolleston. Alastair had organised a visit for us to John Winchester’s collection of early Ford vehicles. Magnificent is how I would describe this collection. There was one of every Zephyr built right from the MkI through to the Mk4 with a very nice 3ltr Mk4 Zodiac included in the line up. All of these were impeccably presented, paintwork, upholstery, and under the bonnet was even gleaming. If it was a Ford, John had it, there was 3ltr Ford Capri, a Mark 3 Ford Cortina 2000E, a model BF Ford Fairmont with the V8 motor (these were quite rare in NZ and now very collectable). Several early flat head V8’s were also included in the line up plus a lovely Model A Coupe that had been restored back to new. John was able to give us the history of each and everyone of these vehicles which was real special. Being an ex farmer John also had a small collection of early tractors from the 50’s through to 60’s He is keen motorist with these and has been known to go on expeditions (road trips) as far afield as Invercargill and the West Coast. The things we do for enjoyment. The lads all thoroughly enjoyed looking over these vehicles, there was a lot of reminiscing going on when it came to viewing the Mk1, 2 & 3 Zephyrs everybody had a tale or two of things they got up to as young lads cruising around in these “cool” cars of the day. If only we could have kept them but as they say hindsight is a fine thing. After completing our swooning over all these vehicles it was off to a local watering hole for a bite to eat and lots of chatting about the visit.
A tail wind was on offer for the return ride back to the start so the journey was made in “double quick” time . Winner this month of the coveted Lyall Hurst Hard Luck Trophy was Wayne Gath. Poor Wayne thought he had all his starting problems ironed out on his Solex but alas no this wasn’t the case so there was much muttering every time we stopped and Wayne had to get going again. He well deserved the trophy for persistence and determination with his problem. That’s all from the desk of VOG1 this time, so until September keep warm and look forward to spring. Royce VOG 1 24

Upcoming Events Gymkhana Day Sunday 25th October 2019 A Grasskhana is being set up to take place on Sunday October 25th (Labour Weekend) at the Branch grounds, Cutler Park. The event will take place in the grass area by the power cables, parallel with our boundary with Steam Scene and is open to entries for any Club eligible vehicles. Four different courses will be set up and hopefully, each entrant will have the opportunity of testing their skills on each one twice with their best times being used in the compilation of the final results. This occasion is a great opportunity for some of our younger members to demonstrate their driving abilities and have a fun day out in their or the family’s vehicle. For the spectators, the event can be really entertaining. The mistreating of vehicles will be discouraged, but nevertheless completion is expected to be fierce. Vehicles need to be in a safe condition and importantly, the battery must be firmly secured. Some assistance is required on the day, time-keeping and marshalling so if you are able to help, please contact me: - Ross Butler, Phone 352-3160 or 021 314-221. Also, a photographer would be great so if you are able to take photos and maybe a video, please give me a call.
