Chairman’s Report The National AGM in Napier was an enjoyable weekend despite the wet weather. Our delegate will report on the meeting, but I wanted to highlight a couple of things I know will be of interest to our members. The Executive approved an increase of $5.00 in the annual club subscription to avoid the potential for a deficit in next year’s annual accounts, and also approved the production of a 60 year membership badge. Those members who have been presented with a 60 year certificate previously will be awarded the badge once they have been produced. I raised this issue with the Executive as a result of concerns expressed to me after the 2017 Awards Dinner where we had three 60 year certificates presented. I am grateful to those members who raised their concerns to me both personally and through Beaded Wheels. Your efforts have been rewarded. We have just had our annual National day with the VCC Daffodil rally, and it was a great success with a beautiful day to top it off. I want to thank Colin Hey and his family and all those who helped to make the day a success. A special thanks to the ladies who manned the kitchen, providing tea and scones from early morning until 2pm. Thanks to Shirley Wills for bringing scone mix and doubling the number of scones we had last year. This was very popular and raised a considerable amount of money. Once again, the Avonhead Rotary club provided a very good BBQ lunch, and Colin produced some unique trophy’s for the winners. Colin will advise the amount raised for the Cancer Society, but I know that it will exceed last year’s total. Well done to all who attended and helped. The Bar alterations are nearing completion and we look forward to seeing the finished product. A huge number of hours have been spent over the past three months by the team comprised of Graeme Arps, Mike Foster, George Kear and his son, Dave Inwood, Paul Ainsworth and Alon Mayhew. These members have donated their time and skills to achieve this improvement so that the price of your drinks does not have to be increased to pay for it. Please remember to thank them for their generosity. The Under 25 year olds rally and the Women Drivers rally will be held on Saturday 9th. We hope that these events are well supported as a lot of effort goes into organising them, and their future will depend on the level of support received.

Ivan Hibberd is receiving a 60 year award, while Don Bennetts, Peter Midgley, Don Muller, Graeme Shaskey and Tom Smith will receive 50 year awards. There will also be 25 and 35 year badges presented. Congratulations to these members. If you have not got your tickets yet, please contact Leigh Craythorne. With Swap Meet just a month away, we are all going to be busy. Happy motoring. John Coomber

Suggested changes be passed by Club Sec/Treasurer Budgets: lots of questions. Motion to Increase as Budget 2 being $5 / $1 joint passed by majority. 4 or 5 Branches were against. Comment made by one branch that budgets did not make a lot of sense. Presentation on 2021 Festival of Motoring (Taranaki) April 17th to 22nd. Highlighted this is not a rally as we have known but a relaxed format of Festival Motoring and site seeing over 4 days the Wed being the only competitive day. Hope cost will come out less than last rally (Not finalised yet) 8
Secretary’s Report… Presentation no 2 on Electric verses Combustion. Also warning on taking or importing cars to or from Australia for Rallies Etc (Asbestos) Zero tolerance. This included checking Brake linings, head gaskets even down to dash board knobs. You have been warned. Congratulation to Canterbury on the Hub Magazine . Ross wants more photo's for Face book with just a brief wording describing it. Example “Pedal car display” Kevin gave report on negative comments in Beaded Wheels and said they are always looking for improvements all the time in the font etc and more photos. No change or movement on the Warrant issues, time or quality of inspections, suggested members ask other members to recommend garages suitable for older cars. (On Going) John Goddard Trophy not awarded this year. (No Nominations) Changes to 25/30yr Award forms on web site, Branches to try and take more care when checking as to whether there have been multitude marriages and name changes. Nick names is another problem not the name they joined with, on the application. Posting of Branch Magazines on going problem for all branches, One Branch tried charging $45 to members to post and only had 1 person take it up. The Historic Vehicle Authority of NZ (Vehicle Technical Code) Wording Changes Passed. Production company doing Air NZ Ad and wanting to feature Vintage cars. Regards Rod Delegate

Club Captain’s Report On behalf of the Club I would like to thank all those members who turned out with their vehicles to the Official Opening of Feldwick Drive in Kaiapoi. We have received very positive feedback from the Council for our attendance. The High Tea organized by Alan & Barbara Hill was a very enjoyable afternoon and evening ending with an excellent meal at the Rangiora RSA. Thanks again for the afternoon Alan & Barbara. By the time you read this our Daffodil Rally will have been and gone. A big thank you to Colin Hey for all his time and effort in organising another successful contribution to the Cancer Society if the day turns out to be anything like last year's event. There is more information regarding the Show Weekend Tour in this HUB. Entry form will be in October HUB. We still require someone or persons to organize the Homestead Run. This is now becoming URGENT.
The Awards Dinner is being held on September the 22nd. The Night Trial and Dinner is listed to be held on the 28th September. As this is only one week after the Awards Dinner and basically the same as the High Tea it will be cancelled and possibly combined next year. Comments please!! Cheers Dave Inwood

Commercial Report The August commercial noggin was hosted by Dutton Garage, many thanks for providing the refreshments and the opportunity to have a catch up and look around the exotic machinery on display, thanks also to those who pointed me in the right direction to make the arrangements. Mark Drury has kindly offered to host the September commercial noggin, at 7 Birkenhead Street Avonhead, and a special invitation is extended for ladies to join their partners for the evening. Motorcycle Report Spring has sprung, the grass has riz, I wonder where the birdie is; The bird is on the wing, But that’s absurd, Because the wing is on the bird… (Apologies to Ogden Nash…) Yes, spring is upon us, and soon there will be plenty of motorcycling opportunities.
Past Events. 28th July, Fish & Chip Run; 11 bikes, 3 combinations, and one car. Out Old West Coast Road 20 miles, left to Darfield, pub lunch at the Darfield Tavern. Great motorcycling weather! 4th August – Round the Bays Run. About 13 bikes; from Woolston WMC, through Lyttleton Tunnel, then a break at Diamond Harbour to regroup. Purau, Port Levy, Pigeon Bay, over the hill to Duvauchelle for lunch. Solved most of the world’s problems over a pint then a leisurely ride home. 8th August – Noggin Night, at the Armagh St RSA. About a dozen availed themselves of the RSA’s hospitality. Very successful, a seriously great place to socialise at in the evening. 25th August – Fish & Chip Run. 7 bikes, one combination and one car undertook the run. Left PMH, up to the Summit Road, to Gebbes Pass, past the Wheatsheaf, into Governor’s Bay, to Lyttleton, through the tunnel, down to the Heathcote Valley Inn for lunch. A good trundle in cool but kind overcast weather. Nice pub that, be great on a sunny afternoon after a run….. 26th August – VCC National Daffodil Day Run, Supporting the Cancer Society. In amongst the 450+ cars there were about 21 motorcyclists, and 3 or 4 V8 powered machines from the V8 Trike Club (hope I have got that right…). An excellent turnout, with many thanks to the other motorcycle clubs that supported the VCC event. Special thanks to the Norton Owners, about a dozen of their members fronted up for what was their last-Sunday-of-the-month get together run. Future Events. 12th September – Noggin Night. At Upper Classics, 2 Hall Place, Middleton – off Birmingham Drive. Meeting there at 7.30 pm. 22nd September – Scooter & Small Motorcycle Run. This is a re-run of the event that had to be postponed from about May due to some seriously crappy weather. Start is The Protocol on Colombo Street, close to the roundabout at the base of Cashmere Hill. To make it clear, a “small motorcycle” is 250cc or less. See elsewhere for more info. 23rd September - Ruff Run & Working Bee at Motorcycle Corner. 12
Motorcycle Report... 29th September – Fish & Chip Run. Meet at PMH, 10.15am for a 10.30am departure. Rider’s choice or we may have a tantalising garage raid organised for you. Turn up to find out! 10th October – Motorcycle Noggin Night. At McLeans Island, The Barn or if a nice night, at Motorcycle Corner. 7.30 pm onwards. 12 – 14th October – VCC Swap Meet. The Motorcycle Section is taking on the responsibility of cleaning the toilets during the Swap Meet Weekend. Normally this job is farmed out to another group who can earn about $600+. The Committee thought here is an opportunity for the Motorcyclists to front up and do something positive for the club as a whole. There will be a roster, it is not a huge job to go round each hour or so. Phil Jeeves (pmjeeves@gmail.com or 022 0259924, 03 338 0666) is organising. 27 – 28th October – Girder Fork Rally, to Akaroa. You arrange your own accommodation in Akaroa, leaves Amy’s Road Liquor Store. More on this elsewhere and in next month’s Hub. The section owns a 1928 Ariel which is GOING AND REGISTERED/WARRENTED and awaiting YOUR reservation to ride this event!! Get in touch with Les Freeman (les.margfee@xtra.co.nz) or phone 358 4549 and have an experience of a lifetime! So that you can see and try out this machine beforehand, it will be at the Ruff Run on September 23rd. Here you can ride it, and try out the hand gear change mechanism for yourself. You will find that it is a piece-a-piss to ride!! J 27th October – Fish & Chip Run. Yes, the same day as the Girder Fork. As Labour Day is 4th Monday of month it is a week early this year which means the Girder Fork has to be a week later. If you are not going on the Girder Fork meet at PMH, 10.15am for a 10.30 am start. As usual, Riders Choice on destination. The main VCC Noggin Night is the first Thursday of each month. You might have noticed that as you walk in there is a raffle table selling meat raffle tickets. It is the Motorcycle Section that runs this table, and we are looking for volunteers to run this each month. Very easy, two people per night, and the committee organises the meat prizes. If 22 volunteer at 2 per night over 11 months it comes pretty easy really; only once a year obligation. Or you and a mate might like to take it on in a more permanent arrangement. This next Noggin Night we will be looking for volunteers, so if asked, please consider seriously. I have an email list of Motorcycle Members, to which notice go out every so often. If you are NOT on this list then GET IN TOUCH!! leithcm@gmail.com or 0212177140, 03 3585 378 will find me. That’s it for now; keep the rubber to the road, Cheers, CML 13
9-90s Report
9 - 90s
Hi to you all Well, it is good to be back. We had a great holiday with friends, Grant and Pauline. Glad we did it, (but the further away you go makes you realise what a great country we have here). Thank you to everyone who helped out with last month’s hangi, all who made it such a success. We might even make it a biennial event. A big thank you to the Tuahiwi Marae, Aroha and Granville and the helpers who made the hangi. Now the August report. Grant Lomax organised a great run through the countryside to the Upper and Lower Selwyn Huts. I am sure that 80 percent of the people had never been there before. If you ever want to go for a nice Sunday drive I have a few copies of the instructions. We are going to do it again. Our lunch stop was at Ray and Nancy Drury’s place. They were very hospitable as always and their car collection is world class. A few new 9-90s participants came to me and told me they didn’t know this museum existed. A very big thank you, Ray and Nancy, from the 9-90s. By the way, the Drurys are having one of their concerts on 9 December, the theme, Winifred Atwell. If you are looking for a pleasant afternoon put it on the calendar. Details will be in the Hub. Grant was thinking of his future too and donated the entry fees to Nurse Maude. Thank you Grant. September 12 Organiser Geoff Townsend Meet at the Yaldhurst Pub Carpark at 9.55am October 10 Organiser Tony Becker Details in next month’s Hub

Afternoon Tea in the Parts Shed Courtesy of Ken Lowden Wayne Stocks, Parts Shed Rep here. I have enclosed a photo of Ken Lowden who prepares our afternoon tea break at the parts shed. Ken does a fantastic job as you can see. We all bring a contribution and Ken prepares it and makes a wonderful cup of tea to go with it then clears it all up afterwards. Ken has been doing this every week for as long as I can remember, every week come rain or shine winter and summer. So from all the guys at the parts shed a big thank you to Ken Lowden a true VCC Club member.

I woke up about 5am on Sunday 26th, and the negative thoughts immediately started. What if we only get a hundred or so turning up? What if the route instructions are all wrong? What if the sound system doesn’t work, or the power goes off in the kitchen? And the Swap Meet line - what if it rains? Having helped organise several big events now, I should know better than think like that, and I was certainly pleased that none those things happened – and in fact exactly the opposite occurred. At 10.10am I was beginning to think (not seriously though) that maybe we should send someone out to close the gate to stop the cars coming in – we needed to get the runs underway! The Daffodil Rally for Cancer was a huge success, thanks to brilliant spring weather which bought out the owners of veteran, vintage and classic cars and motorcycles in their hundreds to enjoy the event. Organised as our (now annual) fundraising event for the Cancer Society, the event is the one day in the year we now get to open the gates to everyone to promote our great Club, and our great facilities. Along with a huge number of our club members, come they did, and it seems as though everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day. Registration and Devonshire teas in the clubrooms started the day off from 9.00am, and it was all hands to the pumps to keep up with the registration paperwork, and especially with the Devonshire teas. Unfortunately the scones we’d had pre-made by a supermarket bakery were not of the quality or size we had expected, so Shirley Wills set about rectifying the situation by turning out dozens and dozens of freshly made scones from the ovens in the kitchen, to supplement the bought ones. She was helped by a very hard-working team who just managed to cope with the jam and cream, and the hundreds of dishes created by the hungry punters. That effort alone raised well over $1,000.

Daffodil Day Rally for Cancer 2018... At 10am the runs got underway, leaving Cutler Park and each visiting one of a variety of venues including the car collections of Ray Drury and John Stewart, the Yaldhurst Transport and Science Museum, Mike Pero’s motorcycle museum, Mona Vale, and the Darfield Art Gallery. Two touring routes were also available (a long and a short one), and despite printing off 100 sheets for the long run, we ran out of sheets for that one. Probably around 100 cars just stayed put in our grounds, the owners choosing just to soak up the sunshine and socialise instead, and that was just fine.
All of the rallies returned to the VCC grounds, where a barbeque lunch was available for purchase from the Avonhead Rotary group, who did a lively trade. The brave kitchen crew soldiered on and put on afternoon tea as well! At 2.15pm there was a brief prize-giving, with Kate Reid from the Cancer Society thanking all participants for taking part in the event, and giving us a brief outline of what the Cancer Society does towards making the difference in a disease that touches everyone in some way either directly or indirectly. All up we estimate around 500 vehicles took part in the event, and at the time of writing, it looks as though around $6,000 was raised from the event. I would like to say a huge thanks to the many members who helped out on the day – especially the kitchen crew (some of whom stepped in at the last minute once it was realised how busy it was becoming in there), and to members John Stewart and Ray Drury for opening their museums for the event. There was also a team doing the registrations, and many who helped marshal the cars as they arrived at Cutler Park, and also went out to the rally venues to keep things orderly there. Thank-you to you all for helping make the day such a success. The following were the recipients of the trophies awarded on the day: Best Veteran: Brendon Wright – 1915 Model T Pickup Best Vintage: Roy & Shirley Grainger – 1929 Graham Paige Best Classic: George and Sue Lee – 1935 Ford V8 Coupe Best Motorcycle: Mike Will – 1951 Royal Enfield Most Impressive Chrome: Peter Rowe - 1961 Chevrolet Belair Best Dressed: Kevin & Judy Straw – Model A Ford Cancer Society’s Choice (Chosen by Kate Reid): Malcolm & Anita McGibbon – Mercedes Benz 190SL Convertible. Payments into the National VCC Bank Account
!!!
16 pages of Direct Credits today, and 14 individual payments have not put the correct reference. I have managed to identify (with some difficulty – spending just over 1 ½ hours on them), but there is still one which I cannot identify. Please remember to put a valid reference on your Bank Payment, as stipulated on the Annual Invoice. It is extremely time consuming trying to work out who a payment may belong to.
If you have an article you would like published, a funny story or some photos of a recent event or rally you could share, please send them through to the Editor for inclusion in a future edition of The Hub.

Show Weekend Tour 16, 17th and 18th November 2018 As previously notified the tour will be centred around Greymouth. We intend to travel over on Friday, the 16th via Lewis Pass. For morning tea (BYO) we will stop at a High Country Station. With our late lunch stop at Reefton Racecourse BYO or buy something in Reefton. On the Saturday run we will stop at Mitchells – Lake Brunner Lodge (this was the old pub) for morning tea. You can take your own picnic or purchase coffee and eats at the old Pub. However the owner will need numbers so let me know with your entry which will be in the October HUB. It would be good to support the Lodge as they are opening up their gates for parking. You will need to pay on the day. Prices and details will also be in the October HUB. Saturday night we have arranged a dinner at the Paroa Hotel. We will also arrange a run for Sunday 18th so those of you who are retired or can get the Monday off work, book your accommodation for Sunday night as well. Weka Pass Railway 'English Electric Showcase' Saturday 6th October
On Saturday 6th October, Weka Pass Railway are hosting a photographers event. We are looking for cars, preferably pre mid-1970s British vehicles, to use as a backdrop for photos with our 1950’s/60’s diesel locomotives at Glenmark Station, Waipara. This will be the first time in about 30 years that there will be 5 English Electric built diesel locomotives in action in one place. Di1102, Dg770, Dg772, Dg791 and De1429 locomotives will be in attendance with passenger and goods trains. There will be a BBQ lunch available and you can ride on the trains afterwards (departing at 1:30pm and 4:30pm, fares apply), or you can follow them on the road. A short run to Waipara will leave New World Kaiapoi at 10:45am. If you would like to attend, please contact Graeme Sword (03 327 7812) or Matthew Morison (Andrew Morison’s son, 027 884 1424 or matthewamorison@gmail.com)
