Commitment

Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, “This man began to build and was not able to finish.” Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? Luke 14:27-31 We have been going through seven words that can shape and change your family. Three were healing words: forgiveness, blessing, and honor.

Now we reach the last of three building words: truth, church, and finally, commitment.

Many of us know commitment is a powerful tool for family transformation, but we haven’t really considered the conditions commitment requires.

Every family you respect and admire—and rightly so—has problems, too. In a fallen world there are no perfect families. But at the center of those that are healthy is this word: commitment.

Commitment is a total, unswerving, unalterable lifetime decision to do life together under God. Commitment is a powerful tool for family transformation.

You say, “Well, I want commitment like that in my family.”

Here are four characteristics you need in your commitment or it won’t be the power God wants it to be in your home:

, commitment must be total. It’s not conditional or temporary. We’re in this for the long haul. The worst moments and difficult situations don’t change the fact we’re family. It’s the context in which we live out what we believe about life.

• Second, commitment is a powerful tool

for family transformation when the cost is calculated. Jesus said, “Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” Count the cost.

The cross there is a symbol of hardship.

Commitment is not easy.

• Third, commitment is going strong when

the course is finished. Notice the alternative: “Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him.” The word mock means literally to play with or tease a child. “Billy, you couldn’t finish your tower. What were you thinking?”

The final characteristic of powerful commitment is when the price is paid. You see, a price is going to have to be paid.

Jesus gives another illustration in verse 31: “Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able…” Families who stay together and keep growing, only until hardship comes or conflict arises never experience the power of commitment.

Don’t miss the power of commitment in your family. Ask God to participate in your life together.

What Ministry type of organizations do you belong to?

At school I’m apart of Fish Connections and Ministry Group - Teen Mania Ministry Global Changers.

What is Fish Connections?

It’s at our school…we have bible study, worship, prayer and conversations… all grades attend. We started out with around 5 kids and now we’re over 20.

They’re like family. God is working and transforming each one in our group.

How did you get plugged into Teen Mania - Global Expeditions?

I had a friend of mine who was already involved and she was really excited for me to go too.

Where have the Mission Trips taken you?

Dallas, New York, Panama & Baja. Zambia, Africa is next!

What did you do while there?

While in Panama, we mainly did children’s Ministry. It wasn’t all just that. That was what we trained for. We did so many other things…like hut-to-hut ministries.

When she left for Panama, I had people getting after me about letting her out of the country. It was not an easy thing, but I realized that she belong to Him. This is her calling. It’s been tough but worth it. It’s always tough to let them grow up and “lose” them but it’s exciting to “lose” them to the Lord!

We were outside, the Pastor preached and shared the Gospel. It was so genuine. We really felt God’s presence. There was this man who was in a walker. How has this effected your look in high school?

What’s that?

It has given me a bigger heart for people at my school. God has given me eyes for wherever I’m at. Today on the bus, I was able to share the gospel to a girl who was sitting near me. She accepted Christ!

Hut-to-Hut Ministries is basically servant evangelism. We would walk around the neighborhoods and get to know people.

How important was that?

It was crucial. It was more than just presenting the gospel in 2 minutes. It was spending hours upon hours with different families…explaining the gospel while digging into the Word. It was the beginning of discipling them.

Being real…not being shallow but having that heart to really speak with them and have the heart like Jesus. Sharing the love of Christ in a real way…a way they get.

How has that effected your friends?

How long were you in Panama?

They tell me…Carissa, I see this Joy that is different about you. You make my day so much brighter. People know that they can come up and talk to me, ask me question and get a real answer.

The most amazing thing for me was that I was only able to talk to her twice and I missed a couple of call on top of that! I said thank you Lord because I got to listen to her voice mails…

As a parent you want your child to grow in Christ yet when it’s time to let them go on Mission Trips around the world…how do you as a mom let your child go?

It’s been a growing process with God…I’m having to really trust. So the first trip we kept her close and only sent her to Dallas for about a week. She was only 13!

It’s great to see how God is working in each of our lives. There are about 10 of us going on different Mission trips this year. My friend Karla is going to Nepal…

Amy is going to India, Saul and my sister Isabella are going to Brooklyn, Orly is going to Alaska, Paul and Donovan are going to Ecuador, Eli and Ruby are going to South Africa. Stephen is going somewhere….he doesn’t know where but he knows

God is calling him to go somewhere.

It’s not because I or someone else went on a mission trip. They see the importance of sharing the Gospel.

Share about your local group Fish Connections.

We are at Memorial High school.

We raise all our own funds and through the group we started Missions Monday.

We sell candy…it’s been amazing to see God provide for all our needs and even go beyond. God has touched our hearts. We are reaching out both here at school and abroad. God is moving.

God is making himself known through us.

We meet on Thursdays in an art room at Memorial High school in McAllen. On Mondays, we make things to sell to help raise money for missions. Money is not what we’re looking for…I’d much rather have prayer!

This is my heartbeat. I know this is God’s calling for me. God has given me a bigger heart for his people. It’s so real.

Carissa shared her declaration of being a world changer...

Today, I will live honorably through my thoughts, actions, and speech. I choose to be full of faith; I will not only be a hearer but a doer of the Word of God. I will serve before I demand, I will love and not hate, and I will give before I take. Today, I choose to make a difference in this world and to be a part of something bigger than myself.

I choose to dedicate my life to prayer and ask God for His miraculous power and the courage to do the impossible. I will make Godly relationships a priority in my life as I esteem others higher than myself. Today, I will live my life in such a way that I Will Change the World.

If somweone had questions on how to go to a mission trip, what should they do?

They should ask me!! Ask their church.

Pray about where they should go….

God will lead you where you should go.

No matter your age…God can use you.

You can make a difference. 1 Timothy 4:12 Don’t anybody look down on you because you are young. Set an example for the believers…..

No matter how young or old you are…

God wants to use you!

You have to be ready to say Send Me! You can change the world!

I’d say you’re right! You’re not qualified…the Lord will make you qualified!

The Journey of Joseph THE PIT TEST // Part 2

We all have a destiny.

Through Christ, we all have been favored

by God. Yet, there are challenges and tests we must go through to refine our character and strengthen our faith. Last month, we began to look at the life of Joseph located within the pages of Genesis.

Joseph had a destiny, and it was to serve a much greater purpose than he ever realized. Nevertheless, Joseph had to experience a series of tests that would enable and equip him for the assignment the Lord had placed over his life. One of the early tests he had to endure was the Pit Test. Joseph was delivered from the pit by being sold as a slave. He found himself in the house of Potiphar, who was an officer of Pharaoh. Because the Lord was with him, Joseph was made an overseer in his house. Even in this part of the journey, Joseph is not exempt from tests and temptations. The wife of Potiphar desires to sleep with Joseph, but he refuses. In an unguarded moment, she grabs his garment and accuses him of sexual harassment. The anger of Potiphar is aroused, and Joseph is thrown into prison.

David waited 13 years before he assumed the throne. Don’t give up because you are closer than you think!

The Prison teaches you to keep DOING. Even while in prison, Joseph did not 2 stop what he was capable of doing. The

scripture teaches us that Joseph was made the overseer of the other prisoners.

Some of us don’t feel like giving our best because we don’t like our environment or the current conditions. Because of our dissatisfaction with our jobs, we perform poorly and we withhold what we are really capable of doing. Yet, this could be a test to see if you will still produce what God has placed inside of you. It could possibly be a temporary holding place!

Pay attention to the spider. A spider can be placed inside a home or outside among the bushes. Wherever you place it, the spider is going to produce webs.

Why? Because of the internal skill set and genetic makeup it possesses. You will always produce what is on the inside of you. If you have greatness on the inside, it will come out even in the dark obscure Prison is a confined place with limited places. If you have faith on the inside, access and liberty. years ago I was stuck in a rut of want. There was an opportunity that looked so promising. A publisher expressed genuine interest in my writing. It seemed to be right. It felt right. I wanted it to be right. It must be right!

But it never came to pass.

In my most mature moments I reasoned, “It wasn’t meant to be. I trust God and believe in His perfect plans.”

As president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, Lysa has lead thousands over the past 15 years to help make their walk with God an invigorating journey. In the midst of her ministry, though, Lysa is a real, everyday woman who simply seeks to glorify God through her life and family.

In my not-so-mature moments I wondered, “God, this isn’t fair. Why do You keep saying no?”

And in my immature moments I whined, “God, do You care this hurts me?”

Have you ever been there?

Ruts of want are tough places to be stuck.

When God says no, we are sometimes tempted to wonder if He loves us. In reality, it’s because He loves us, He sometimes says no.

Read that last sentence again and rub it into your heart. The hurting part. The part that throbs and aches when you see others getting the exact opportunity you want.

You fake a smile to hide the pain.

God brought this change of perspective to me through a baking disaster that happened to my youngest daughter Brooke. She came to me at 9 o’clock one night and asked if she and her friend could bake a cake.

Hope, Brooke’s older sister, had offered to help and I was too tired to argue the incessant pleas of a nine-year-old.

So, the girls began to bake.

Brooke measured and poured, whipped and stirred, and carefully placed a batterfilled cake pan into the oven. Then she turned on the oven light and watched the cake bake. Her cake became her whole focus. She couldn’t stop looking at the cake and grew increasingly impatient with the slow-passing minutes on the timer.

Nothing kills patience like solely focusing on the object of your desire. And tragically, impatience becomes the breeding ground for compromise.

About 30 minutes into the 45-minute baking time, the cake looked done. It smelled done.

Brooke and her friend wanted it to be done.

She reasoned it must be done!

Hope helped retrieve the cake and placed it on the counter to cool.

And it wasn’t long until the cake imploded.

The cake couldn’t withstand the pressure of an undone center ... and neither can we.

If we obsess over the cake and make it our whole focus, character atrophies. If we make growing in godliness our obsession and keep our focus on God, our character matures. And a mature character makes for a solid and welldone center.

I thank God every day for every “no” He has graciously allowed and continues to allow in my life. Our key verse Proverbs 16:3 teaches, “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Through placing my focus on God, I have embraced His plans for me, and I trust that a “no” from Him is really a blessing.

I used to pray, “God, let me, let me, let me!”

I now pray, “God, please never let my success outgrow the character necessary to handle it.”

Indeed, it’s because God loves us, He sometimes says no.

Dear Lord, although I don’t always understand, thank You for saying “no.” I know that You do so as a measure of protection for me. Help me to embrace Your best for my life, Father. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Reflect and Respond:

What “no” have you thanked God for lately?

Soak in the truths of our key verse and power verses. Then, think about instances in the past where a “no” from God has really been a blessing in disguise. Use these tools in an area of your life that needs reminding of His faithfulness now.

What is island of praise - IOP? IOP is a worship event held at South Padre Island that was created 5 years ago. We do it because its worth it. People are connected in a huge way. So many people are at the island and may for the first time hear the gospel through song. We donate our time and give away the money that IOP raises to different local and national charities. This year we are partnering with a non-profit group called Crossroads Academy. They will be offering GED classes along with a food bank. We are asking people to bring canned food or clothing to assist Crossroads Academy as they get ready to assist many here in the Valley.

Tell us the history of IOP? When we first started back in 2007 we started with 1 stage and 9 bands all held at Isla Blanca Park. The 2nd year, we had 2 stages and 18 bands. The 3rd year we grew to 3 stages and partnered with Schlitterbahn Water Park. That year we formed a 501c3 non profit. Last year it grew to 6 stages and this year we are praying to have 4 stages at Isla Blanca Beach and 2 at Schlitterbahn Water Park!

Where Are This Years Stages Going To Be Held?

The Main stage at Schlitterbahn is located by the main entrance. There is a big Palapa and the lazy river flows right next to it. The second Schlitterbahn stage is planned to be toward the middle of the park where the new park connects with the existing known park. We are planning on having 10 bands on the side stage and 8 bands plus our Josh Wilson on the main stage. (We are excited about Josh Wilson by the way….) Along with 4 additional stages out at Isla Blanca Park.

How Many People Usually Attend The Event?

We usually have around 8,000 people at Isla Blanca Park and another 8,000 at Schlitterbahn. It’s one of the largest Christian Music events in South Texas.

What prompted you all to start IOP?

We were going to church at BT McAllen and back one night at BT when Jobe Gonzalez lead a night of worship. We were so touched that we started looking to take what happened outside the church. We went to the island and next thing we knew we had a license agreement to host our first event. We had incredible help from the Mayor of Port Isabel - Joe Vela

What Should People Expect At Iop?

They should expect an outpouring of God’s love that day. Through music…song. It’s not an event where you will be preached at or hit over your head with a bible.

We are aware that there are many non-christians there at the beach and we want to share the love of Christ to them in a non-threatening way. They are getting God’s word through the words of the songs that are being sung by worship leaders from across the valley. They aren’t just bands there to perform but they are actual worship leaders from all across the valley. They are giving of their time to share God’s love and watch what God will do through that. God has restored lives and brought people to the knowledge of Christ through this event.

We prepare for an entire year for this event. There are and have been praying for people. People will sense God’s love and presence that day!

Where will IOP be this year?

Wow, we are bringing in Josh Wilson on the main stage inside Schlitterbahn. We are also brining in Raul

Sanchez at Isla Blanca Beach. Raul is without a doubt one of the top 10 accordionists in the country. We are also having one stage specifically for Christian rap….this should connect with the younger crowd.

When can people start getting there?

If they want to beat traffic, before 12 o’clock! Bands are playing all day so really whenever you can get there.

The Event starts at 10 am and goes through 8:00 pm.

How much does this cost?

At Isla Blanca, all the events are free but if you want to park your vehicle at Isla Blanca, they charge $5.

Schlitterbahn tickets are $30. That includes all the access to the park, all the bands and the concert with Josh Wilson. Tickets normally cost $55…so you are getting a great value!

A Peasant’s Journey

t was during the later part of the year, in the middle of the1800’s, that a fascinating story emerged within an obscure Russian village, in a small church, deep within the heart of a nameless peasant. It was a Sunday like any other. The lowly peasant entered the back of the church just as the New Testament book First Thessalonians was being read. He took his seat and began to listen to the words of the text. As the Apostle Paul’s closing comments were being read a particular statement, the seventeenth verse of the fifth chapter, captivated his heart. “Pray constantly.”

The words echoed deep within his being. Immediately, his mind began to race, “Pray constantly? Without ceasing? Is this possible?” The more he pondered this verse, the more he wondered, “is Paul actually serious?” After all, life is full of busyness and distractions, necessities and circumstances that require our full attention. How can one possibly pray always, without ceasing?

He began to dig through the pages of Scriptures. To his surprise, he found other places where Paul instructs us to “Pray in the Spirit on all occasions” (see Eph. 6:18, Col. 4:2, 1 Tim. 2:8). He quickly made his way back to the little church in search of the minister to inquire how one might obtain to such a lifestyle of continuous prayer. of Scripture to pray without ceasing, but could not offer any practical means by which one might pursue such a reality.

The more the little man thought about these verses, the more his heart longed to know what they meant and how he could learn to pray as the Apostle commended. With an aching heart, the peasant gathered his only possessions, a knapsack with dry crusts of bread, a Bible and the clothes on his back and set out on a journey that time would only tell where.

He first found himself sitting at the feet of the most popular preachers of his day. Sermons resounding with affirmations of the power of prayer, necessity of prayer, even filled with a call to pray, but none could instruct him in how to pray unceasingly. Everyone had a theory or theology of prayer, but none an actual practice thereof. Where could someone be found who lived a life of ceaseless prayer? Day after day, as his search continued, the insatiable desire within him to know such a prayer-filled life grew more and more.

Venturing away from the cities, he began to travel along distant roads and remote villages. His unquenchable hunger for God sustained his disabled body through the long days, sleepless night and countless miles as the months passed by.

One day the peasant was passing by a small village.

As providence would have it, an elderly man joined him along the way and began inquiring about the purpose of his journeys. The peasant began to recount to him the past year: the incident in the church, the verse from Thessalonians and his tireless search for knowledge regarding prayer. The elderly man led him into his simple dwelling quarters and they continued to talk.

“There are many types of prayers in Scripture,” explained the elderly man. “There are prayers of confession, adoration and praise. As well as, prayers of asking, seeking, petitioning, interceding and listening. The Bible is filled with many different types of prayers. There is a time and place for each of these, but I will teach you how to train your heart to pray without ceasing.”

“The ceaseless Jesus Prayer,” he continued, “is a continuous, uninterrupted call on the holy name of Jesus Christ with the lips, mind, and heart; and in the awareness of His abiding presence it is a plea for His blessing in all undertakings, in all places, at all times, even in sleep.”

“How do I do this?” inquired the peasant.

“In the Gospels,” the elderly man explained, “there once was a man who had an incomparable desire to see Jesus. His name was Bartimaeus. He spent his days sitting by the roadside begging, for he was blind. He had heard of the miracles Jesus performed, the teachings that flowed through his lips and the healing that were brought by the mere touch of his hand. Bartimaeus’ chance finally arrived, as Jesus was passing down the road where he was sitting. The crowds began to swell.

Voices began to rise in the streets. This Bartimaeus’ heart began to pound within his chest. As the crowds grew, he became more of a stepping-stone than human bystander.

In desperation, he began to cry out in a loud voice, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ What else could he do? The crowds prevented him from standing up. Further, even if he found his footing, being blind, how would he know which way to go? So, he did the only thing he knew to do. He began to cry out in a loud voice.

he promise of motherhood is similar to the fairy tale we believe of marriage. We dream of our children adoring us and picking up their toys, asking to read books and finding favor with friends. We envision our children excelling and going to college and getting degrees and all along saying “I owe it all to my mom”….like I said a fairy tale.

One never fully expects the demands of sleepless nights, diaper changes, the “no” and “mine” phase of toddlers or the “oh gosh mom you’re so embarrassing” phase of teenagers.

Motherhood by far is the most challenging aspect of my life. Like other working moms I’ve got to balance career and family and try to maintain my sanity. At times the demands as you know can be overwhelming.

I’ve been blessed with two wonderful boys-Cord and Diego.

Cord is my firstborn and he is articulate, witty, smart, soft-spoken, analytical and ambitious. His goal since age 10 is to attend Stanford University and play on the PGA Tour. He excels at school without much effort. He wants to be a role model. Cord not only looks up stats on his favorite golf players but looks at their faith. He knows God has a purpose for his life. He calls himself a “nerd” just like his mom. Cord is the coolest teenager I know. His little brother adores him.

My Diego is 11 years old. He is funny, compassionate, diligent and has a smile that melts my heart. He has to work twice as hard as his peers to finish schoolwork and socially he struggles. He was diagnosed with a form of Autism-Pervasive Developmental Disorder at age 8. He has characteristics of Attention Deficit Disorder, Autism and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

As a physician I saw the early signs-the extreme tantrums, poor eye contact, speech delay, the social withdrawal- but as a mom I couldn’t accept it. Why? How? Is it my fault? Will I have to start him on meds? Did I return to work too soon?

What kind of future will he have?

As a believer I turn to the word for answers. I searched and searched for a cure, for direction and one scripture started to stand out above all…

His world is black or white, Right and Wrong, no gray zone. Diego doesn’t lie and can be painfully blunt but he doesn’t do it to hurt others. He thrives on routine and structure.

No compromises.

That’s what God wants for us too.

Your workmanship is marvelous-how well I know it. You watched me as I was formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born.

If I am to believe the word as the truth, then God sent me this child just as he was meant to be. My job is not to change his creation but to embrace the uniqueness and the blessings that come through this “diagnosis”. God sent me Diego to change me and to learn from him.

Those whom have taken time to interact with Diego will tell you how he has influenced them. They all comment on his capacity to love. Ironically, we believe autistic children don’t want this contact. Spend enough time with Diego and you will see that’s not true. It just takes more commitment and building of trust.

I believe that every child has come to this world just as God has intended. He never labeled his children “normal”. That was society…that was me and you!

I would often pray that God would heal him and repeatedly felt like it was an unanswered prayer. It was difficult for me to hear him say “why can’t I be normal?”, when I myself had asked God the same.

Ask any mother of a “special needs” child if she has not changed and perhaps grown spiritually. You will see a resilience and protectiveness that is the mirror image of God’s love for us…

We’ve shared tears regarding his struggles. He has difficulty reading social cues and is very concrete in his rationale. As he becomes older he realizes he is different. What kid doesn’t want to fit in with peers? He would frequently ask me “why was I born this way?”

”As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you. Isaiah 66:13.

How could I as a physician have the abil-

My child like every other child has a purpose and God has great plans for him.

I wasted too much time believing anything else. I encourage you to spend time with those you deem different. Listen to what God is trying to tell you. The posters and information for autism says “autism speaks”. I believe what it should read is “listen and be still”.

My Diego has made me a better Christian, physician and mother. I no longer pray for his healing but rather I pray for the patience and guidance to direct him on the path that God has for him. I pray that He sends people into our lives that will take time to understand him and to love him. And those prayers have always been answered.

I am more prepared on those days he struggles and asks me those same questions. My answer is simply this “you are made in HIS image and you have a calling on your life and I love you just the way you are!” Isn’t that what we all long to hear?

So my image of idyllic children praising their mom has changed…it is now I who say “I owe it all to my children.” My prayers are also simpler….

Thank you God for the blessing of what I once considered an unanswered prayer.

Forgive me Lord for the times I questioned you and failed to be thankful in all circumstances of motherhood…thank you for choosing me to be their mother.

Why did God create Moms?

Wise King Solomon knew the power of a mother’s sacrificial love when he ordered that half of the baby be given to each of the arguing mothers. He knew the real mother would give up her claim to being the child’s mother so that her baby boy could live. Read about it in I Kings 3:16-28.

“God created moms because they could go shopping while me and my dad go hunting,” says Jacob, 7.

How many times have we seen mothers claim innocence for sons who have committed the most heinous crimes? A mother’s unconditional love is based on her capacity to love, not on her children’s worthiness.

As a guy who hates to shop, that makes perfect sense to me. And while the guys are hunting, Mom will “teach girls about makeup,” says Kristin, 10. “He also created moms for girls to tell about problems we can’t tell dads. Thank you, God, for creating moms.”

As Kathryn, 12, says, “It’s nice to be able to talk about things. I know because I have a mom.”

Listening is important, but “moms were made to have fun with their kids,” says Alex, 10. “You might think your mom is old, but really inside, she is a kid just like you,” adds Kristen, 9.

Yes, you might be amazed that your mom likes to have fun, but even more amazing is that moms will love you even when you’re not so much fun. “Moms will love you even if you fight a lot,” says Adrienne, 10. “They are probably here so they can take care of their kids. But, that’s just my guess.”

Nick, 7, says it another way: “God made moms so they could be like God.”

In the same way, God’s love is not based on our worthiness. We have all sinned against God. The irony is that the one who lived perfectly and loved unconditionally was tried, convicted and crucified as a common criminal to pay the penalty for our rebellion against God. Whether or not you’ve been blessed by a mother’s love, remember that the greatest love of the greatest mother who ever lived is only a reflection of God’s perfect, unconditional love.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Good guess, says Mallory, 7: “I think moms were made to hug you. I think that God made moms to kiss you, too. I think moms were made to fix your hair.”

Not only are moms good for hugs and hair, but also hassles, says Beth, 9: “God created moms because we need somebody to get onto us and say things like, ‘Clean up your room now!’”

Beth, you might consider what your mom does for you. J.T., 7, believes that “God made moms to do stuff without getting mad.” In fact, “Moms do most of the dirty work around the house,” adds observant Andrew, 10.

All right, let’s get down to basics, says Justin, 9: “God created moms to give birth to people so that the earth’s population will grow.”

Remember, Mom was there in the beginning. You were kicking, screaming and making a mess in your diaper. Part of Mom’s job is to remind you of your humble entrance into this world, says Stephen, 10: “God made moms to embarrass you in front of your friends. Moms are made to be there for you always, and you’ll always be their baby.”

It would not take me long to write a list of one-thousand complaints, frustrations, and disappointments.

This fallen world seems to have nothing but trouble at every turn.

We know God is good, but we can easily get caught up in the fog of doubt and discontent.

Voskamp’s journey allowed her to see and experience ugly-beautiful. “That which is perceived as ugly transfigures into the beautiful. The ugly can be beautiful.

The dark can give birth to life suffering can deliver grace.” Through the eyes of thanksgiving, this is where suffering meets grace. Of Christ the Scriptures say, “There was nothing beautiful . . . about his appearance” (Isaiah 53:2). Voskamp remarks, “He became ugly that we might become beauty.”

Voskamp’s writing is fantastic and her journey is one that you can try for yourself. This book has helped me to remember to be more thankful for what is before me every day that God gives. The discontent stench is slowly subsiding with the aroma of thanksgiving.

Let God show Himself more brilliantly as you live a life of thanksgiving.

months ago, I woke up feeling lightheaded and sick to my stomach. I had no clue what was wrong, but I figured I would feel better as the day went on. I didn’t. The next two mornings, I felt progressively worse, and finally, my strange symptoms culminated in severe chest and shoulder pain, difficulty breathing, and almost passing out. Becca, my wife, took me to the emergency room because we thought I was having a heart attack.

God to guard my heart and my mind, so every time I experienced a panic attack, I prayed for that. I would wake up each day and say,“God, this day belongs to you. I can’t make it without you. I literally can’t breathe without you. I need you to carry me.” And He did carry me, and He still does. He carried me through each day even before I experienced the anxiety, but I just didn’t realize it. It took these difficult moments for me to realize how much I need Jesus.

The doctor did a number of tests, and after 30 excruciatingly long minutes of waiting, he told me my heart was fine. He said that I had experienced a major panic attack, which simulated the same symptoms of cardiac arrest.

I was so relieved, and we drove home thinking my experience was simply a one time thing. It wasn’t.

The truth is, we all need Jesus to carry us. We are lost without him. As Augustine said, “our souls are restless until they find their rest in You.” Maybe you struggle with anxiety. Maybe you’re dealing with something else, like divorce, abuse, financial troubles, or doubt. Perhaps everything seems to be going well in your life, but even if that’s the case, Jesus is the only one who can sustain you, whether you realize it or Over the next few months, I continued to deal not. Colossians 1:17 reminds us, “He is before all with anxiety and panic attacks, some of which things, and in him all things hold together.” woke me up in the middle of the night. There were times I couldn’t feel my arms and legs, and I still struggle with anxiety, but God’s peace has other times I was sure my heart was going to been palpable during my trials. He is teaching beat out of my chest. I had to cancel a number me how to truly rely on His strength instead of of concerts while I tried to get everything under my own. He is teaching me that just as he holds control. this universe together, he also holds my heart.

Over and over I reminded myself what Paul said to the church in Philippi. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let you requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). I needed the peace of

“You’re Not Stunting Her”

Dear Dave, My younger sister moved to Atlanta, and she came to live with my husband and me a few months ago. She’s 19, has a job, and is attending a local college.

But even though she’s working, she hasn’t said anything about helping out with utilities or paying rent. We don’t need the money, but do you think it’s time for us to push her out of the nest so she can start living as an adult?

Dear Molly, The way you’ve described your little sister makes me think she’s a pretty good kid. She’s doing all the right things for someone her age, and it doesn’t sound like you’ve got a party animal or drug addict in your home. In my mind, this is the kind of person you want to help.

In a sense, you’re acting as surrogate parents to this young lady. If it were my little sister, I’d let her live in the house without paying rent as long as she was living smart and moving in a positive direction. To me, this includes working, saving money, and going to college. At the moment, you’re enabling good, positive behavior. You have a chance to be her biggest cheerleader and prepare her for the future.

But if things change and she starts behaving irresponsibly or living a lifestyle you don’t approve of, then it’ll be time to put the brakes on the deal. But right now this kid’s a rock star. Thanks to the generosity and support shown by you and your husband, she can gain traction for a successful launch into the world as a smart, responsible adult. I think it’s awesome!

John Dear John, I disagree. It’s like saying you should quit your job to get food stamps. You guys obviously aren’t poor, and any financial advisor who says you need to fake being poor in order to get help is not a person whose advice I want to follow.

When your kids apply for scholarships and assistance, your entire financial picture will be assessed. More funding goes to kids from poor families than rich ones, but that’s only fair. Chances are, you fall somewhere in the upper-middle portion of the scale.

But no, I wouldn’t move the money or try to hide it. It’s just not honest to try and act like you’re poor when you’re not. I don’t believe in that kind of stuff.

Some historians may argue that among the greatest restoration stories of mankind are the European Renaissance or perhaps the post-World War II era.

The cultural movement known as the European Renaissance roughly took place during the 14th through 17th centuries. This moment in history saw the face of Europe evolve with respect to its arts, architecture and long held science tenets. It also saw a rediscovery of the Greco-Roman classical knowledge and a rebirth of the study of Latin and vernacular languages. It served as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the Modern Era.

Closer to home, America saw its restoration take place in the years that followed World War II. During this era, couples who could not afford families during the Great Depression made up for lost time.

The mood in America suddenly became optimistic. At that time, the unemployment rate of the Great Depression dropped dramatically and the economy improved substantially. The G.I. Bill empowered many honorable service members to finish high school and attend college. As their skills were improved, so was the financial well-being of their families.

But, without a doubt the greatest restoration that can take place is when a person does as Romans 10:9 instructs us to do. Romans 10:9 says: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” The message is simple: invite Christ into your heart and make him your personal Lord and Savior. At that time, your restoration will be complete.

Next He will do as Philippians 1:6 says, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” As you seek and strive to honor God with your life, He will reward you by allowing you to take on His characteristics. Hosea 14:4 says, “I will bring my people back to me. I will love them with all my heart; No longer am I angry with them.” I pray that you will invite Christ into your heart and allow Him to restore you!

At my office, I also want to be part of your restoration plan, albeit in a different way. I pray that God will use me for His honor and glory in helping me address your needs. If you have been involved in an auto accident and/or other serious injury or if you have lost a loved one as a result of someone’s negligence, I will do my best to restore some sense of normality to your life. I will also help you in matters involving family law, criminal law and real estate and will issues.
