THE

MOMENT THAT SAVED MY MARRIAGE By Lysa TerKeurst

“Let your gentleness be evident to all.” Philippians 4:5a (NIV)

Weak places. Places inside us that make us wonder if we’ll ever get it together like the together people. Places that make us feel “less than” the next girl.

We all have them

One of those weak places for me has always been my tendency to let my emotions boss me around, especially in conflict. My deepest desire is to let my “gentleness be evident to all” like our key verse says … but the truth is my reactions haven’t always reflected my desire for gentleness. I really think I was born with firecrackers in my blood. But when my relationships began to suffer due to my emotionally driven tirades, I found myself crying out to the Lord for help. He prompted my heart to pause and let the Holy Spirit intervene on my behalf when my emotions rallied to be right. Honestly, I wasn’t totally convinced that this whole “giving it over to God” thing really worked. Until one day I saw the beginnings of my imperfect progress. A few years ago, my husband Art and I hit a rough

But, because of God’s response being stored up in me, this situation wound up bringing us closer together than we’d ever been.

through social media, spend time with Him. Listen for Him. And then go look for rich evidence of Him at work in your life. Because God stands in our yesterday, today and tomorrow, He sees all. And He knows the perfect way to prepare our hearts for every situation.

And I realized how crucial it is to always be aware of God’s preparation in our lives.

When we embrace His preparations, even a girl with firecrackers in her blood like me can have reactions that honor God and breathe life into relationships.

One way to be more discerning of this is to commit to exchange whispers with God before shouts with the world every day. Before you check your cell phone or scroll

Dear Lord, I’m choosing to let You take control of my reactions. Help me to always exchange whispers with You before shouts with the world. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

TRUTH FOR TODAY: Proverbs 29:11, “A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back.” (NKJV) REFLECT AND RESPOND: What situation have you been in recently where you could have paused to let the Holy Spirit work on your behalf? If you didn’t have a good reaction, don’t give up! The beauty of imperfect progress isn’t having it all together right away. It’s allowing the Lord to take you by the hand and lead you through slow steps of progress wrapped in grace.

This is sad, because God has a unique, customdesigned plan for each of our lives. As time passes, I find myself more impressed with character than charisma—with personal integrity than talent. I am more impressed with someone who has, for instance, stayed with their spouse than someone who may have some huge ministry (not that you can’t have both). But the key is to finish what we have started, and to finish it well, because if you run first place in a race for every lap except the last, it doesn’t matter. You have to cross that finish line and play by the rules. So run your race with all of your strength. Guard your life so that you don’t get sidetracked or disqualified. And keep your eyes on the finish line

Walking in Grace I know a mom who makes homemade meals every evening for her family. Her children’s birthday parties are Pinterest pin-worthy. She is patient with her children’s faults. She reads stories every evening at bedtime. She nursed all her babies for a full year. She does not grow weary of the incessant demands of raising a family. She bandages wounds, wipes away tears, and keeps her home running smoothly. Her laundry always seems to be folded and the dishes put back in the proper cabinets. Her children’s hair is neatly combed, and their clothing looks freshly pressed. Who is this woman of many wonders? You might ask. In my head (which is where she resides), she is called “The Perfect Mom.” Even though she is mythical, she is very much alive in my heart. If I’m not careful, I end up living joylessly in her shadow, always feeling the weight of my own inadequacies. There is nothing I’ve ever wanted to get right more than motherhood. Yet daily I fail to live up to my image of the perfect mom. Do you also suffer from Perfect Mom Syndrome? The symptoms of PMS include comparison with other moms, a sense of failure, judgmental attitudes, fearfulness, joyless performance of duties, incessant chasing of new activities, and a weary and worn heart. PMS consists of moments of elation: I’m a good mom because I cook healthier meals than she does!

12  valleychristianmagazine.com

It also consists of moments of despair: I’m such a failure. How does she get her children to two sports and violin practice? The pressure to perform builds like a ticking time bomb, waiting to explode.

his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed before unpunished – he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Where then is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No but on that of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

The remedy for our malady is a precious word: grace. The more we understand and experience God’s unmerited favor in our lives, the more we will reflect Jesus in our parenting. We’ll spend this final week studying our need for grace, God’s willingness to be gracious, and how growing in grace affects our children. Open your time today in prayer, asking God to give you ears to hear and eyes to see His grace to you.

1.

Read Romans 3:21-28 But now a righteous from God, apart form law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate

What would be a grace-based response to success? What would be a grace-based response to failure?

Read 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleased with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Why did god make us alive with Christ?

c.

What did God prepare in advance for us to do?

b.

How is a person saved?

d.

Why do we have no room to boast?

In my pursuit of perfection, I become worn and weary. Perfectionism is pride-based performance, a determination to live up to

my self-appointed standard. The truth my soul needs to hear is that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Perfection is impossible. A chasm separates me from righteousness. It is a height I can never reach, an expanse I can never cross. By accepting this first truth, I can believe in a second truth: I am justified freely by His grace through redemption in Jesus. Grace means “undeserved favor.” Salvation is a gift. In Jesus all my wrongs are made right. His grace is sufficient. The extravagance of his favor leaves me with no room for boasting. Any good within me is from His gracious hand. He prepared these works in advance for me to do. Any failure that I fear is covered by his sacrifice. In Jesus the performance pendulum stops – both the pride of success and the despair of failure are absorbed by grace. Take a moment to consider the following questions to assess how grace applies to your role as a mother.

In what areas are you most likely to boast or feel confident in your parenting?

Why was Paul given a thorn in his flesh? Why did Paul delight in his weakness?

Our weaknesses are not cause for despair. Our strengths are not cause for boasting. God is at work in both. Some areas of mothering may come easily. Other areas may involve difficult struggles that humble us. Earlier in his letter to the Corinthians, Paul encouraged them with these words: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but no abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:7-9) A grace-based response to both success and failure is worship. When we find ourselves growing into the moms we hope to be, we overflow with praise to the One who is at work in our hearts. When we find ourselves failing once again, we thank God that our sins are fully paid for in Jesus. His grace is sufficient for our weakness. Spend some time today in worship. Thank God for the areas where He has faithfully grown you and gifted you as a mother. Thank Him also for His grace in the areas where you struggle with sin and failure. Worship Him for the gift of His grace.

5 Ways to Make Sure Your your Kids Hate Church hate Church

1) Make sure your faith is only something you live out in public Go to church. At least most of the time. Make sure you agree with what you hear the preacher say, and affirm on the way home what was said especially when it has to do with your kids obeying, but let it stop there. Don’t read your bible at home. The pastor will say everything you need to hear on Sundays. Don’t engage your children in questions they have concerning Jesus and God. Live like you want to live during the week so that your kids can see that duplicity is ok.

people are watching, no need to do it with them in private.

3) Focus on your morals Make sure you insist your kids be honest with you. Let them know it is the right thing for them to do, but then feel free to lie in your own life and disregard the need to tell them and others the truth. Get very angry with your children when they say words that are “naughty” and “bad”, but post, read, watch, and say whatever you want on TV, facebook, and twitter. Make sure you focus on being a good person. Be ambiguous about what this means.

Live like you want to live during the week so that your kids can see that duplicity is ok.

2) Pray only in front of people The only times you need to pray are when your family is over, Holiday meals, when someone is sick, and when you want something. Besides that, don’t bother. Your kids will see you pray when other

4) Give financially as long as it doesn’t impede your needs Make a big deal out of giving at church. Stress the need to your children the value of tithing, while

not giving sacrificially yourself. Allow them to see you spend a ton of money on what you want, while negating your command from scripture to give sacrificially. 5) Make church community a priority. As long as there is nothing else you want to do Hey, you are a church going family, right? I mean, that’s what you tell your friends and family anyways. Make sure you attend on Sundays. As long as you didn’t stay up too late Saturday night. Or your family isn’t having a big bar-b-que. Or the big game isn’t on. Or this week you just don’t feel like it. Or... I mean, you are church going family so what’s the big deal?

“yes it is highly requested” why the man asked ?” the artist replied: “because before the tattoo on body, tattoo already on mind.” Once a mind is tattooed with negative thoughts, chances of long term success are unlikely. The mind produces emotions and they in turn direct our decisions. Decisions turn into actions and when they are repeated they become our habits. Habits forge our character and lead us to our final destination in life. Some people are tattooed for life by the words of the parents, their teachers, relatives and even strangers. Those words have produced a mindset and will produce a fruit of its kind. A negative thought life will never produce a positive outcome.

THE TWO WOLVES O

ne evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. “One is Evil – It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. “The other is Good – It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

One is evil, the other is good Throughout the years I have met with many people who come to me for counseling, coaching and/or mentoring. There is a common thread I find in most of them when addressing their issues…they all put the blame on their spouse, children, boss or circumstances. And the fact of the matter is that their minds are their worst enemy. Our mind plays a pivotal role in the development of our day to day lives. It can either pave our way to success or lead us down a road that

The memories of past experiences, hurts, the lack of forgiveness, resentment and bitterness feed the evil wolf that desires to live and thrive within us. We must strategically and categorically starve it to death.

How do you starve the evil wolf? You have to start by seeing yourself the way God sees you and not as people see you. You must live your life according to His promises and not by what’s been declared over you or by the way you see yourself in the mirror of your past You must... • Inundate your mind and heart with the Word of God.

that ends up in a down spiraling abyss. James Allen, the author of “As a Man Thinketh” says “we are literally what we think”. You are today what you thought yesterday and tomorrow you will become what you are thinking today. There are certain situations and circumstances that people encounter in life that forge their mindsets. A mindset or thought pattern has the ability to edify or destroy, to promote or demote, to make you better or make you bitter. Either way its your choice. You choose the path you will follow.

“You have to start by seeing yourself the way God sees you and not as people see you.” I heard a story about a missionary who traveled to Hong Kong back in the 90’s. While walking down the crowded downtown streets he came across a tattoo parlor that had hundreds of tattoo designs on display outside the window. Out of all of the designs there the one the caught his eye was one of a skull with the following inscription “born to lose”. The foreigner intrigued by this tattoo asked the artist “do people ever request this tattoo to be branded on their bodies forever?” the elderly tattoo artist replied

• Accept His forgiveness. • Study His promises and make them yours. • Write a few “I AM statements” on an index card and read them daily: I AM a child of God, I AM justified and redeemed, I AM accepted, I AM the righteousness of God, I AM chosen by God. I AM no longer a slave but a joint heir in Christ, I AM the apple of His eye and I AM more than a conqueror. Wishing won’t starve the evil wolf death however right thinking and right speaking and coming into agreement with God’s Word will. You have got to be intentional if you want to conquer that thing. CAMP UNIVERSITY + JHK EQUESTRIAN =

Smiles and Laughter! A Special to Valley Christian Magazine

O

n a beautiful bright Spring morning in March, C.A.M.P University was welcomed at JHK Equestrian Country Club’s facility, by owners Jami and Nacole Ricks for a morning of horseback riding and ranch activities. JHK Equestrian Country Club is located on 11 acres nestled in behind large old mesquite trees and surrounded by mother nature right on McColl Road just south of 107 University Dr. in Edinburg. JHK has over 35 years experience and certified lesson horses provide an array of horsemanship programs for children and adults from beginner to advanced instruction. Some of their programs include an After School Horsemanship programs, Moms and Tots Spring Mornings, Summer Camps as well as special events for youth organizations, church groups, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts Badges, Team Building for athletic teams, businesses, and leadership groups, and all occasion parties. Jami and Nacole Ricks met a young lady who attends CAMP University through Mrs. Martinez’s purchase of a gift certificate for a riding lesson package as a birthday gift to her dear friend Carolyn. Carolyn is Autistic and has a passion for horses. She is so innocent, full of Life, the sweetest love, finds happiness in the simplest things, and just a bundle of energy; it was love at first sight

for the Ricks. The Ricks learned about the non-profit organization, CAMP University, through giving Carolyn riding lessons. (Camp University provides opportunities for special needs young adults to continue developing life and social skills after high school. Camp University is a day program that is offered to high school graduates with intellectual delays.) At JHK Equestrian Country Club, over the past seven years the Ricks has offered a horsemanship program for autistic children and having the opportunity to work with young autistic children the Ricks have grown a passion for these special children. The Ricks knew right away that their next community service should be dedicated to CAMP University. The Ricks invited CAMP University to their ranch for all of CAMPers to have an opportunity to ride and enjoy the ranch. Patricia Martinez, the Director of CAMP University, accepted the invitation for a private event dedicated to the special needs young adults attending CAMP University. When the CAMPers arrived they were all surprised to find out that would ride, paint the pony, groom the horses, and have a picnic. As they took turns riding others were enthralled with the idea of painting ponies. They gently applied bright colors to the bodies of the horses, occasionally practicing their penmanship by writing their name. Amanda Sasser, the Co-Founder and Director of Marketing and Business Development, said “I can’t tell you what it meant for the CAMPers to be able to go out and ride and paint horses. It was so heartwarming; every time a CAMPer got on a horse every one would cheer and wave.” For the Ricks, it was one of the most rewarding days they’ve had in a long time. Ricks said “seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter has a way of warming my heart and bringing me closer to God.” Sasser said, “Horseback riding has so many benefits to our young adults such as core strength, balance and coordination, and muscle tone and flexibility. Likewise it also has mental benefits such as conquering fears and confidence in learning how to handle and interact with such a large animal. This an experience that some of our students never would have had without JHK Equestrian Country Club and we are so thankful for the opportunity.” Sasser said, “The CAMPers talked about the outing for days following.” If you would like more information, contact Patricia Martinez at Camp University at (956)207-0456 or www.campuniversity.org. Moreover, if you would like more information on the horsemanship programs offered at JHK Equestrian Country Club, contact Jami Ricks (956)292-3318 or Nacole Ricks (956)207-0456.

Expect Great Things from God. Attempt Great Things for God A Special to Valley Christian Magazine Light of Life began in my husband’s heart. With resolve, he said, “I am tired of reading testimonies, I want to be a testimony!” After our business and home sold, in the fall of 2001, we moved from Plymouth, MA to San Antonio Tlayacapan, Mexico. Once settled in full time ministry, we began holding Bible studies, children’s groups and community outreaches. God gave us a property were we established both our home and church. In 2004 to everyone’s surprise I gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Our son Gregory was 10, Greg was 58 and I was 43 years old (with Lupus!) Really, God, a baby now? Unfortunately, due to health and language issues, after much prayer, in the fall of 2007, Luz de Vida was handed to the care of Mexican pastors and we relocated in the city of McAllen, Texas. McAllen soon became home to us. Bible studies ministries started all over again! With two godly men and their wives, we decided to rent at our present location. Our grand opening was on January 16, 2011, with only eight members, counting the four of us. Preston went to be with the Lord a few months after our first service, but we will always remember his wise words: “Do not despise small beginnings!” Ramon & Maria Valentin have been with us from the very beginning. Their trust and faithfulness have been a source of strength and assurance. The fastest growing ministry in our church is AWANA. We will always be indebted to Art and Edna Rodriguez for starting and continuing to run the AWANA CLUB program. Kids are special to the heart of Christ and they are the hope for the next generation. Children bring love, joy, energy, and hugs to our church

We are a very small church if you are counting numbers, but we are a great church if you count heart, commitment, and mission. We might be few, but “little is much when it is in the hands of our Lord.” We have used the letter C to define our church. C is for Church – Christ, our center. Conservative & Contemporary (Keep the good from the past and welcome the good of the present). Committed - to the Great Commission, to live Christ like lives, godly Communion. Compassionate – Caring. Country and Citizenship – we are proudly an American church. Although we welcome people from all cultures to be united by the Gospel of Christ in a godly American heritage. We instill in our children love for this country

and the Christian values that made this land a great country. Our motto, taken from missionary, William Carey: “Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God.” It’s not easy to start a church from scratch. It is hard work, physically, emotionally, spiritually; however, God uses hardship to develop endurance. It is in the waiting that our faith and faithfulness gets strong. God is doing a great job in knitting us together, stitch by stitch. One person, one family, one soul at a time, we are becoming a Church, Light of Life Church.

Do you know how lucky you are?

“Here it comes she’s going to blow!” That’s what I heard when I was about to go on my millionth speech about why they were lucky to have me as their mother. Been there?

Our beautiful gifts from God start off as trusting, respectful and eager to please children and then they hit the teenage years and it’s as if somebody else moved in their body! The questioning, the irrational reasoning, the eye rolling and my favorite the stare into oblivion during what I see as a great teaching moment! I’ve sat many a night in my closet with M&M’s in hand and pondering that question that plagues so many of us…”Am I a bad mother?”. I can remember clearly when I was told I was pregnant with my firstborn Cord how I imagined endless days and nights of adoration for a selfless mother and assumed we would always be close. My second son Diego was born and I thought I would only be twice as admired, respected and revered. I was going to be the perfect mother and I would always feel appreciated! On Cord’s 5th birthday his wish in front of all his friends was “I would love you forever!” In my mind I was on the right track. I was achieving an idyllic childhood for my kids! We focused on biblical training from an early age and put them into one of the most prestigious Christian schools starting in pre-K. They were taught to honor their parents and what was taught at school was also reinforced at home. Proverbs 22:6 Direct your children on the right path and when they are older they will not leave it So of course these last few years have been quite eye opening and mind boggling. Battles over iPods, iPhones, staying up, forgotten homework, getting clothes off the floor and the endless “why?.. in a minute! “can seem endless. And why can’t they like the girls we choose? “I did it your way!” I said to God as I popped my 40th candy in my mouth. What did I do wrong?

22  valleychristianmagazine.com

Good moms don’t yell, or storm out after battles or say “because I said so!” Right? My patience has been replaced by foot tapping…. my words of encouragement often bypassed by scolding’s… my quiet time with mom now means something quite different. Am I bad a mother? If you have asked yourself the same question let me set you straight…No you are not! It’s just a different season in motherhood with many lessons to learn. Only we are the student. When our children were young they did as we instructed them. They absorbed our words. It’s easy parenting because they literally do what we say. But as our kids mature they start to learn by example. They need our grace and forgiveness. Sound familiar? 1John3:18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. And what a better time for God to flourish the fruits of the spirit in each one of us than through the testing of Puberty!

When our children were young they did as we instructed them. They absorbed our words. It’s easy parenting because they literally do what we say. But as our kids mature they start to learn by example. Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. The fact that we question ourselves makes us good mothers because that means we know there is room for improvement. I’ve had many “here she blows” moments followed by “I’m sorry I yelled at you” sessions. My sons know that I love them and that I’m not perfect and that is what makes us close. They see my flaws and faults and they witness my corrections and improvements. The only way to be a “bad mother” is stop trying to be a better one.

May 2015

So when your teen leaves their clothes on the floor, breaks curfew, comes home with a less than stellar report card or arrives with that teenage angst show them with “joy” where to put their laundry, with “gentleness” dispense punishments for curfews and with “peace” in your heart take their iPods away for bad grades and attitudes. Breathe slowly & eat M&M’s (works for me) before you exhibit “self control” in the middle of teachable moments! Did I mention sarcasm is a great tool during puberty! At least for my household because laughter is good medicine and with mom in charge there are many laughs to be had! My children are lucky to have me! And so are yours! Happy Mother’s Day! Proverbs 31:25-31 She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness. She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness. Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her: “There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!” Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise!

Theresa Valladares She is married to Enrique Lopez and has two wonderful sons, Cord and Diego. They are members of The Family Church and she practices family medicine in Pharr.

The One

An Amazing Love Story Starts With You

By Ryan Leak, Amanda Leak, and Jodi Lipper Published by Waterbrook Press If you’re looking for average, go ahead and put down this book. No hard feelings. Most people will admit that they are looking for an amazing love story. We’ve all seen those couples, the ones holding hands or whispering to each other as they stare into one another’s eyes as if they share an awesome secret. We watch them and wonder, what’s up with those two? We never anticipated becoming one of “those couples.” When we met, we just worked on listening to God and preparing ourselves for the story he planned for us. What we learned and want to share is that no matter what your relationship status may be, this amazing story begins with you.

In this book we share more than the events happening around “The Surprise Wedding.” We share our triumphs and our mistakes, both before and after that day. You’ll learn healthy habits you can start practicing today, ones that will help you lay the groundwork for an incredible marriage later. God has something amazing in mind for you, but he can’t get you there without your help. We absolutely believe in The One. And we believe that you’re it.

UNAFRAID

Trusting God in an Unsafe World By Susie Davis Published by Waterbrook Press Though I don’t know where your fears started or how deep they sit in your soul, I do know this: Fear is a heavy burden. One of the heaviest you can carry. It’s exhausting and overwhelming. And it’s not from God. —Susie Davis, Unafraid In 1978 Susie Davis watched as a thirteenyear-old classmate entered her classroom and killed her teacher. As a witness to one of the earliest school shootings in our nation, Susie faced years of paralyzing fear and an intense distrust of God. But God relentlessly pursued her and, over time, broke Susie’s fear addiction. In Unafraid, Susie offers her hard-won

insights about how we can trust God in the midst of our fears about violence, disease, and personal tragedy. With you, she asks, “How do we live unafraid? How do we remain aware of world events without giving in to fear? How do we make everyday choices to stop letting ‘What if?’ control us?” As Susie shows us, it is possible to break fear’s grasp on our lives. We can be aware of the terrible without forgetting the beautiful. We can look up with joy and realize the remarkable truth: Jesus wants to take our fear and give us, in its place, true peace. Walk this liberating journey with her and learn what it means to live unafraid.

THE PRICE OF

UNFORGIVENESS by James MacDonald

“Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart” (Matthew 18:32–35, ESV).

F

orgiveness is costly. After someone deeply hurts you, it costs you something to release that person from the debt owed to you. Just ask Jesus (1 Corinthians 6:20).

But even more costly is unforgiveness. The fallout of not forgiving is huge. When you decide not to release a person but instead nurse the injury and harbor resentment, look out for some major consequences—as the life of the unforgiving servant in Matthew 18 reveals. At the center of that story is an unforgiving heart. Though the servant had been forgiven an immense, unpayable debt, he refused to forgive his fellow servant’s relatively minor debt—and the price of his unforgiveness was very high. Let’s count the cost of unforgiveness:

back before the master, check out his response: nothing. Not one syllable in his own defense. The master essentially challenged him, “I forgave you this massive debt, and you couldn’t forgive this tiny amount?” The servant was utterly humiliated. 4. Torture. The resolution of this story is sobering: “And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt.” Unforgiveness brought the servant literal, physical torture, and on us unforgiveness inflicts emotional torture. If you refuse to forgive those who injure you, your life will become a torture chamber, and every future encounter you experience will pass through the grid of your unresolved pain.

How will your story end? In the case study of the unforgiving servant, we see clearly the cost of unforgiveness. May we heed Jesus’ warning and forgive from the heart—as we have been forgiven.

Journal How has unforgiveness tainted your life—a shattered relationship, loss of respect, humiliation, or emotional torture? “Mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:13b). To whom do you need to show God’s brand of lavish mercy?

Pray Father God, You lavish outrageous mercy on me—totally undeserved, impossible to repay, new every morning. I revel in Your mercy. Thank You for this story, because in the unforgiving servant I can clearly see the fallout of unforgiveness. Please show me, Holy Spirit, the unforgiveness to which I’m blind in my own heart. Forgive me, I pray. I choose to forgive, though it costs me. I cling to Your promise: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” (Matthew 5:7). Sanctify me so that I may be called “the merciful,” as I know I am also in desperate need of Your mercy. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Dear Dave,

Sharing Successes

My husband and I are 28 years old. We’re completely debt-free, and we each have great jobs. We don’t talk a lot about this kind of stuff, because we’ve found it causes other people to treat us differently. We realize how incredibly blessed we have been, so we always try to give God the credit, save, tithe and give regularly, and not brag about these things. How would you recommend handling a situation like ours? Amanda Dear Amanda, When you start to win with money, build wealth and achieve some of your goals, you discover pretty quickly that there’s a very small group of people you can celebrate with. It sounds like you’ve discovered this already. A lot of times there are friends, and even family members, you can’t celebrate with because it comes off as bragging — even if you’re just happy you’ve reached a milestone. So, you learn to keep lots of stuff private and not even share the good things. Still, if you have a nice car or a beautiful home, these things can indicate that you’re successful. Even if they’re a small percentage of your financial world, it will sometimes generate feelings of jealousy or envy in other people.

Jealousy is, “I want what you have.” Envy is, “I don’t think I can have what you do, so I don’t want you to have it either.” These are two really evil spirits, and they’re loose in our country today like never before. Part of the price of making smart decisions, and being wise with your money, is that some people don’t understand when you win and don’t think it’s fair.

Dave Says

But the truth is that you guys have every right to enjoy the fruits of your labor. You’ve earned it. You’re generous, giving people, and you take care of your family so the rest of us don’t have to pay extra taxes to take care of them for you. That’s the truth about winning with money. You guys are under no obligation to explain your income, net worth or the fact that you’re winning. And you’re not obligated to be ashamed of it either! —Dave

Dear Dave,

Difference in Debts

My wife and I are on Baby Step 3 of your plan. We’re also saving up to buy a car with cash. We’re about $3,000 away from our goal, but now my wife wants to go ahead and finance the rest. She has started wondering what the difference is in borrowing to buy a car and borrowing to buy a house. Lex Dear Lex, This is a good question. It sounds like you guys have made good progress, but now one of you is running out of steam. That’s okay. Getting out of debt and staying out of debt can be a tough road. For one thing, cars go down in value. The second thing is I don’t like debt of any kind. I don’t really like borrowing for a house even, but I tolerate it as long as you use a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage with payments that are no more than a fourth of your take-home pay. I mean, it’s a much larger purchase. You can get a great car for $15,000 to $20,000 dollars. Depending on where you live, a good home can cost you 10 times that or more. Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times bestselling books: Financial Peace, More Than Enough, The Total Money Makeover, EntreLeadership and Smart Money Smart Kids. His newest best-seller, Smart Money Smart Kids, was written with his daughter Rachel Cruze, and recently debuted at #1. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8 million listeners each week on more than 500 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

Still, the best way to build wealth and have a high-quality financial life is to not be in debt. You’re never going to win with money in the long term if you can’t learn to delay pleasure. That’s the bottom line. Personal finance is about controlling the person you see when you look in the mirror. Every one of us has that little four-year-old kid inside, a little kid whose name is Immaturity, and he or she wants what they want right now. What your wife is asking is a normal request, but it’s also a sign that we all have to address that little kid that’s inside us once in a while — and tell that kid no! —Dave

Raul “Rudy” Rodriguez

attorney at law Some historians may argue that among the greatest restoration stories of mankind are the European Renaissance or perhaps the post-World War II era. The cultural movement known as the European Renaissance roughly took place during the 14th through 17th centuries. This moment in history saw the face of Europe evolve with respect to its arts, architecture and long held science tenets. It also saw a rediscovery of the Greco-Roman classical knowledge and a rebirth of the study of Latin and vernacular languages. It served as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the Modern Era. Closer to home, America saw its restoration take place in the years that followed World War II. During this era, couples who could not afford families during the Great Depression made up for lost time. The mood in America suddenly became optimistic. At that time, the unemployment rate of the Great Depression dropped dramatically and the economy improved substantially. The G.I. Bill empowered many honorable service members to finish high school and attend college. As their skills were improved, so was the financial well-being of their families. But, without a doubt the greatest restoration that can take place is when a person does as Romans 10:9 instructs us to do. Romans 10:9 says: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” The message is simple: invite Christ into your heart and make him your personal Lord and Savior. At that time, your restoration will be complete. Next He will do as Philippians 1:6 says, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” As you seek and strive to honor God with your life, He will reward you by allowing you to take on His characteristics. Hosea 14:4 says, “I will bring my people back to me. I will love them with all my heart; No longer am I angry with them.” I pray that you will invite Christ into your heart and allow Him to restore you! At my office, I also want to be part of your restoration plan, albeit in a different way. I pray that God will use me for His honor and glory in helping me address your needs. If you have been involved in an auto accident and/or other serious injury or if you have lost a loved one as a result of someone’s negligence, I will do my best to restore some sense of normality to your life. I will also help you in matters involving family law, criminal law and real estate and will issues. As always, I bear in mind that in honoring God with the way I handle my business relationships I will be honoring you my esteemed client.
