Fostering the passion and development of local youth through the performing arts, where talents and life skills may grow in an inspiring and nurturing environment. Outreach

MPBT has worked hard to fulfill its mission: reaching out to students and giving them the rare opportunity to perform in a professional environment, allowing them to learn about theatre production by assisting experts with props and costumes, and giving over 700 children, from underrepresented communities in Monterey County, the chance to watch everything come together in a free performance. During the 2019 season MPBT dancers and coaches have reached beyond their stage and studios to personally share their time and talents by teaching dance to children at Community Partnership for Youth, Rancho Cielo as well as a fundraiser for Jacob’s Heart, by participating in the collection of canned goods for KSBW’s Share Your Holiday, and spreading holiday cheer via performing excerpts of the Nutcracker in elementary schools. Through dance and arts education, our students have generously given of themselves sharing their time and talents to bring joy and comfort to all ages of our community.

Biographies TIA BROWN ROSENBLUM- ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Tia is a nationally recognized dance professional and an award-winning team director with 20 years of instruction experience. She specializes in dance education for children and has taught in elite ballet and competition programs in Florida and Alabama as well and in pre-professional dance programs on the Monterey Peninsula. Tia focuses on curriculum development; ballet, jazz, and lyrical/contemporary technique training; preprofessional training tracts for ballet, jazz and contemporary dancers; and Youth America Grand Prix solo and group coaching. During Tia’s teaching career, she has had the honor of instructing many students who have been accepted into programs and companies such as: Royal Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, American Ballet Theater (NYC), Joffrey Ballet (jazz, contemporary, and ballet programs), Ellison Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Tisch School of the Arts (NYU), Ballet Chicago, and LINES Pre-Professional Training Program. While Tia has had opportunities to work with many students on a pre-professional path, she also has a strong passion and love for working with those children who are focused on dance as a recreational passion. She finds it of the utmost importance to foster each desired learning experience in a fun, nurturing, and structured environment. Her training in ballet, pointe, jazz, and contemporary encompasses nationally and internationally respected instructors from the Royal Ballet, Ballet Stars of Moscow, Bolshoi Ballet, Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theater/Ballet West and Boston Ballet, Walnut Hill School of Performing Arts, and Dance Life Retreat and Training. Tia’s competitive team choreography has consistently received recognition and highest of honors at regional and national dance competitions, winning consecutive titles for the past several years. Tia has been the Artistic Director of local pre-professional companies as well as Tour Director for an eleven-day China Tour with twenty-one dancers. Tia moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 2004, working in the filed as medicine but never abandoning her passion for dance. In 2015, she achieved a long-dreamed goal and, joining with Laura Jeselnick, opened The Dance Center in Carmel, CA. When Tia is not at the studio, she and her husband, Dr. Leland Rosenblum, enjoy spending time with their family and two boys and dog.

KIRSTEN ASTURI - COSTUMER

Kirsten Asturi began her journey in the arts as a classically trained ballet dancer and began teaching at 18, under the mentorship of Jane Vann Bryan in Merced, CA. In 2002, Kirsten created and implemented a performing arts program within The Enrichment Center, an art program for adults with different abilities, in Merced, CA. This inspired a devotion to inclusion that positively influenced her teaching style. She joined with Central West Ballet in Modesto and then branched into modern dance with Off-Balance, a company in residence at Modesto Junior College, under the direction of Kim T. Davis and Lori Bryhni. In 2006, she was honored to perform twice during the Gala Evening for the American College Dance Festival, in Sacramento, CA. As a ballet instructor for over 15 years with Juline School of Dance in Modesto, Kirsten honed her craft of teaching to students of all ages. Kirsten’s most treasured arts experiences come from the classroom, and in working with dancers as they learn and

(Cont ’d) grow. Under the mentorship of the Artistic Director of Juline Regional Youth Ballet, David Arce, formerly of San Francisco Ballet, Kirsten stepped into the role of Director of Outreach for the The Juline Foundation for Chldren. In this capacity, she provided dance instruction to children of varying abilities in public schools’ grades K-6 throughout Stanislaus County. She has directed numerous performances combining public school dancers with mentors from Juline Regional Youth Ballet, with magical results. Kirsten has attended teaching seminars with David Howard, and has observed and learned from many master teachers including Alaine Haubert of Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theater, and Laura Alonso of Ballet National de Cuba, a world-renowned teacher and the daughter of prima ballerina Alicia Alonso. Kirsten’s love of sewing and creating started early, and along the way she began costuming various productions. She began to formally design and create costumes in 2003, and this has since led to her creating costumes for Kim T Davis Dance, Central West Ballet, Juline Regional Youth Ballet, San Jose State University, sjDANCEco, Nickerson-Rossi Dance, and Sacramento State University, among others. Having transplanted to the peninsula recently, Kirsten is thrilled to join this wonderful team at The Dance Center, where a new chapter in dance has begun. Kirsten lives in Pacific Grove, with her husband Ira, and son Owen.

Since retiring from the stage, Kiera has focused on sharing her knowledge and experience, through teaching, hoping to foster an appreciation of the art of ballet in others. For several years she taught students of all ages in the Los Angeles area, and was principal in orchestrating, as well as choreographing for, student recitals, and for regional productions of The Nutcracker. As a resident of Carmel, Kiera is looking forward to training a new generation of students, in a discipline that will benefit them in all aspects of their lives. LAURA LOBO

Laura Lobo is a native from Massachusetts and relocated in 2015 from snowy Boston to the “snowless” Peninsula. She began dancing at 9 and completed her formative and professional training in ballet, pointe, jazz, contemporary, acrobatics, hip-hop, and tap at the Kalia Karr Studio of Dance. Laura was specifically inspired by her teacher Kolleen Carchio. She attended college in Worcester, MA and has been teaching dance for the past 13 years. A highly respected choreographer and team director, Laura’s teams have won awards nationally, including overall high scores and special awards honoring her artistry and choreography. Her soloists have been title winners, awarded placement on dance teams, and assistant positions at conventions. Along with instructing dance classes and competition dance teams full time, Laura also recently worked as a Dance Consultant at the Burncoat High School Dance Department. Concurrently, Laura worked as choreographer for the Boston Midsummer Opera in 2013 and 2014 under the direction of the wonderful Antonio Ocampo-Guzman. Laura’s desire is to help create confident, beautiful dancers that appreciate the art. She has adopted a positive competitive dance framework. Laura believes dancers are among the most talented athletes and loves that dance is a means to express yourself and therefore, even in the competitive realm, a self-expression should always be viewed within the context of a “win.”

Story of Nutcracker ACT I

Our story begins on a foggy Christmas Eve in 1915. Outside the Stahlbaum house, people hurry home to their Christmas revelries. The mysterious toymaker, Drosselmeyer, arrives at the Stahlbaum party with his beautifully wrapped presents. In the sitting room of the Stahlbaum house, a tree trimming party is under way. Clara and Fritz, followed by their friends, arrive downstairs to see the tree lit, for the very first time in their lives, by electric lights. The children dance with glee! Soon it is time to open gifts. As the children settle down to play with their presents, Dr. Stahlbaum invites his guests to dance. Drosselmeyer, “Uncle Drosselmeyer” to the Stahlbaums, arrives and entertains the families with magic. He delights the children with performing toy soldiers, life-sized ballerina dolls, and mysterious harlequins. Clara is captivated by them! At last, Uncle Drosselmeyer opens his specially wrapped gift for the family and presents Clara with the magical nutcracker doll. Delighted, Clara dances with the nutcracker. Fritz looks on with envy, then grabs the nutcracker, breaking it. Drosselmeyer magically repairs the nutcracker, much to everyone’s relief. The Stahlbaums and the adult guests begin their final holiday dance. The hour is late, and the guests say their good-byes. Fritz and Clara go upstairs to their bedrooms, and the house quiets down. Soon, Clara descends the stairs, searching for her nutcracker doll. As the clock strikes midnight, she settles on the sofa and falls asleep. As Clara dreams, her mind whirls with the memories of the evening. Deep within her dream, huge mice appear and frighten Clara. Drosselmeyer chases them off, then uses magic to make the Christmas tree grow large and wondrous. There is more magic when Drosselmeyer brings the Nutcracker doll to life. He summons toy soldiers from the cupboard to fend off the mice. A tremendous battle ensues. The fierce Mouse Queen arrives, and engages in a duel with the Nutcracker. Clara bravely aids the Nutcracker, who, though victorious, is overcome by exhaustion from the battle. Clara is worried, but Uncle Drosselmeyer consoles her. He then magically changes the Stahlbaum home into a Kingdom of Snow. Clara is welcomed by the Snow Queen and Snow King. As the snowflakes dance, Drosselmeyer transforms the Nutcracker into a dashing prince and presents him back to Clara. Then the King and Queen send Clara and the Prince off to their next adventure in a beautiful sleigh.

Story of Nutcracker ACT II The scene opens in the Kingdom of Sweets, where the angels and Angel Queen dance. The Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier welcome Clara and the Prince. The Sugar Plum Fairy commands a festival, filled with dancing, to honor her guests. The celebration begins with Spanish flair. Colorful Arabians, whirling dancers from China, and lovely French Mirlitons perform for the guests. Sharing in the festivities are frolicking candy canes, and dancing chefs with their darling cupcakes and cookies. In the final celebratory dance, the Rose Queen joins in a glorious waltz with her court of flowers, dazzling Clara and the Prince. As the festivities draw to a close, the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier grant Clara her greatest Christmas wish by performing for her and her Prince. It is Christmas morning. We see Clara asleep on the sofa of the Stahlbaum sitting room, with her beloved nutcracker safe in her arms. It was all a wonderful dream.

Congratulations, Baby Girl! We are so very proud of your work ethic and dedication in the studio as well as the classroom. It seems like yesterday when we took this picture of you getting your first pointe shoes to send to Tia. You have grown into such a beautiful young lady and are so very grounded. You inspire us to be better versions of ourselves every day. Keep working hard to achieve your goals and make all your dreams come true.

We love you so very much, Mom, Dad, Missy, Lindsey, Nico, Nash, Pepper & Pogo

You have always made us proud with your courage to do the unexpected... If you hit a wall you have chosen to either climb over it, crawl under it or dance on top of it. We send you out into the world knowing that you have taught us more about the importance of enriching your soul through the efforts you make daily. Love you more than you can imagine! Mom and Dad

Dearest Halle What an extraordinary spirit you are. We are inspired by your determination and passion. Turn up the music and dance. Light up the stage. We are your consummate audience. We love you endlessly, Mommy & Daddy
