Stonegate is modeled after many of the special places the current owners have visited in their travels, including the East Coast and Europe. From room to room, you will discover many architectural styles have been incorporated into the home’s design. You will see a bit of Westminster Abbey in the master bath; a Highland croft or farmhouse design in the guest house; an entry hall reminiscent of Tylney Hall in Basingstoke, England; a Shipmaster’s quarters; a bedroom suite inspired by the Marble House in Newport, Rhode Island; a French wine cellar; a family room evocative of a hotel in St. Paul de Vence, France; a dining room representing an English country house; and a driveway similar to a street in Beacon Hill, Boston. There is even a secret room - see if you can find it during your stay! Each room has a different theme and one central focal point, such as the ceiling in the living room, the fireplace in the family room, or the in-home theatre which delights with its style of an old time movie house. It’s all a playful yet stunning way for the owners to bring a little bit of New England and

European flair to Pebble Beach. All of the cabinetry, walls and ceilings were built and designed on-site. The stone is original Carmel stone and Bath stone from England that was also carved on-site. The ceiling beams are solid pine and oak from New England. The fixtures are from England and of course, the wine is from Napa. Three brothers crafted all the woodcarving following the theme that the house is the furniture. Another standout feature is that the house has no interior paint; it is waxed. Articles or pictures about the home have appeared in Architectural Design and other select publications. If you are interested in learning more on the house during your stay, you will find that several books referencing the types of architecture employed, have been added to the home’s library for your reading enjoyment. Outside, the beauty of Pebble Beach will also beckon for your attention and the property features walking trails and a sunset deck allowing you to experience all the home’s delights, both inside and out.

n Monterey County, visitors and residents will find no shortage of accomplished practitioners offering unique spa, nutrition and fitness services. But exploring alternatives and choosing professionals can be challenging, particularly for those unfamiliar with the area. That’s where VIPWELLFIT comes in. Master Pilates trainer, paramedical esthetician and certified holistic nutritionist Tracy Healey launched the wellness concierge service this spring together with friend and business partner Ana Poirier, a yoga teacher and energy worker. They saw an opportunity to capitalize on their business and service experience, creating a one-stop shop for individuals looking to book appointments with reputable local providers.

The pair works closely with area inns and home rental services, offering a resource for employees as they assist customers. Clients can also book directly on the VIPWELLFIT website, where available services include spa, massage, yoga, Pilates and personal training sessions, plus nutrition consultations and customized detox guidance. The company arranges guided hikes to the likes of Point Lobos and backcountry Big Sur, and will soon debut packages catering to bridal parties, golf enthusiasts, couples and others. Healey and Poirier also work with customers to provide personalized experiences: think champagne and flowers waiting in the massage room, or fresh-pressed juices delivered to the vacation rental. “Many people come here to play, or they come here for events. I have had three great loves in my life

The first great love of my life is my father. He is the one constant throughout my life. He has been my compass and true north. I lost many an hour listening to him talk about driving up the California coast along Highway 1 all the way to Monterey. Mijo, you never want to take the 101 – that’s for tourists and farmers. You’re a Californian. Drive the coast, mijo, it’ll humble you and make you feel closer to God. The other great love of my life is my wife; a statuesque blonde whose beauty is surpassed only by her intelligence. We met in Monterey in 1993 while stationed at the Defense Language Institute. We spent time together by default – my barrack mate was dating hers. She intimidated me to the point that I had to wait another seventeen years to actually ask her out. The last great love of my life – the one my wife would call the greatest love of my life – is the Monterey Peninsula. I was not born here. But time and again I was put back together here. You see, the thing no one tells you about Monterey is: yes, it is beautiful to look at, but more than that, it helps heal the soul. And when you finally get to Monterey, mijo, stop and take it all in. It’s not a place you drive through; it’s a place you absorb. When my dad died I was living in Ohio. I came back to LA the day I got the call. I did all the things a firstborn son is supposed to do; I handled his meager estate, hugged virtual strangers, listened to stories about the man who made me that I had never heard before, and buried my father. Then I left LA.

For a few months I was simply not there. I was alive, I was working, I was numb. I left Ohio and moved back to Monterey. Then I took my father’s advice and stopped, and remembered to breathe, absorbed. At night I would sit on the beach and just listen. Sometimes I would catch myself talking out loud to no one there. Other times I would throw on my wetsuit, jump into the sea and dive just so I could have a place scream without people thinking I was a madman. From Del Monte to Lover’s Point, from Asilomar to Carmel River, the beaches of the Peninsula have absorbed an ocean’s worth of tears. Monterey took me at my lowest point and held me up just enough to help put me back together. It happened gradually, almost imperceptibly; I started smiling more, laughing more, and just living again. One day as I was walking along Asilomar beach I became acutely aware of being alive. I was struck by how surprised I was to feel that way again. I don’t live here anymore. I finally asked out that statuesque blonde I met on the Peninsula oh so many years ago and married her. Duty calls her to be stationed far away (yes, she is still in the Air Force) so I am stuck living on a different beach in Florida. I still consider Monterey home and come back often. When I return, I always leave feeling like a part of me that arrived almost on empty is filled again. - Rudy Martinez

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was founded in 1950 as an adjunct to the Pebble Beach Road Race, a race event sponsored by the Sports Car Club of America and conducted on a circuit of closed public roads. The 1950 and 1951 Concours were held on a practice tee and driving range adjacent to the Beach Club, a private club near

the Del Monte Lodge (now known as “The Lodge at Pebble Beach”). Thirty cars were exhibited on November 4, 1950, and a smaller field of 23 on May 27, 1951. In 1952, the event was moved to the 18th green of the Pebble Beach Golf Links, between the Lodge at Pebble Beach and the Pacific Ocean, overlooking Carmel Bay.

It’s a Dog’s Life IN CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA MEET...

As the Operations Manager for Elite Carmel, my days are generally spent in my car running around town checking on properties. Occasionally I will have a slow day – which gives me a chance to grab my favorite co-pilot, Louie, and pretend to be a tourist for the day. If you have stopped by our Carmel office or if you have attended the most recent SPCA Wag n’ Walk – you may have already met Louie. He is our 3 year old Bernese Mountain Dog who loves to get out and see (and smell) new things. After a quick stop by the office to answer a few emails – we usually walk over to From Scratch restaurant for breakfast. I really like From Scratch because they open early and have a great breakfast menu. I highly recommend the veggie eggs benedict. They also have a pet friendly patio with plenty of room for the larger pooches to stretch out around the table. Louie highly recommends the bacon and sourdough toast (no butter though – he is watching his figure). Walking around the Barnyard for a bit is a great way to burn off some of those bacon calories. In addition, if you are ever looking for a last minute dress or amazing pair of shoes for an event – I highly recommend checking out Footsie in the Barnyard. Their staff is always helpful and they carry fun new styles that you will not find at your local department store. After that, we usually take a drive down Ocean Ave with the windows down. I love watching Louie sniff the air while we are driving. It is almost as though he is trying to figure out if we are going to the beach. As we get closer to Carmel City Beach, his tail starts wagging a bit faster when he picks up the salty air. Carmel City Beach is a dog friendly, off-leash beach and Louie LOVES it! Almost more than bacon. I have been taking him there since he was a pup, and while he won’t get in the water, he loves running around with all the other pups on the beach. You will see all kinds of furry friends on the beach – from Corgi’s and Pomeranians to Golden Retrievers and lovable mutts of all shapes and sizes.

This is usually my favorite part of the day. It is nice just to sit on the beach and listen to the sound of the waves and the sound of a happy panting dog. We live in such a beautiful place – you have to remember to sit and take it in sometimes! With a quick trip to the water fountain to refill Louie’s portable water dish we take a walk up Ocean Ave to do a bit of windowshopping. The nice thing about most of the shops is that if you are traveling with a pooch you can do more than window shop. Many of the stores allow you to bring in your furry friend and will usually have a water bowl outside. The last stop of the day is Pet Express for a quick bath. I love this place because it is a great way to save a few bucks on grooming by bathing your pooch yourself! Over the next few issues, Louie and I will be visiting various different pet-friendly places (restaurants, parks, doggy day-spas and more!) to provide you with info on the very best places to take your best friend while visiting Carmel!
