Preface from the Country Manager The year, 2022 is a significant year for us as we celebrate fifty years of manufacturing in India. Our association with the country is even older, as Caterpillar equipment was used to construct the Bhakra Nangal Dam in the 1920s. Since then, we have been part of the nation’s growth across many sectors. Today, India is Caterpillar’s one of the largest manufacturing base with six state-of-the-art facilities, two R&D locations, and eight brands operating from the country. Additionally, as we are responsible corporate citizens, we undertake numerous corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives focused on quality education, access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, and skill development to empower the community in which we live and work. We’ve
collectively gone through both good and challenging times and have consistently provided essential products and services to support the world. Congratulations to our team on being part of this 50-year journey, and here’s to 50 more!
Bansi Phansalkar Director, Global Engineering Division and Country Manager, Caterpillar India.
Foreword by the Chairman & the CEO I want to congratulate our India team on reaching your Golden Jubilee milestone, celebrating 50 years of manufacturing in India. Caterpillar in India has been pivotal in supporting the nation’s growth through its role in mining, construction, transportation, infrastructure development and captive power generation. We began with our first facility in Tiruvallur in 1971. Over the last few decades, we have expanded our footprint across the nation, representing our Cat brand, Perkins, Progress Rail, and Solar Turbines. We appreciate the value our India team provides through its best-inclass product solutions and service innovation for India and the world. Their expertise, dedication, and commitment play a significant role in the company’s success and contribute to helping our customers build a better, more sustainable world.
Once again, I offer my sincere thanks and best wishes to our employees, dealers, and customers for a very happy 50th anniversary of Manufacturing in India.
Jim Umpleby Chairman & CEO, Caterpillar Inc.
Our History During the 19th century, when horses powered agricultural projects, Caterpillar co-founders Benjamin Holt and C.L. Best created products that transformed how customers worked. Both Holt and Best invented steam tractors in the late 1800s that allowed farmers to work longer than horses could, boosting productivity and reducing costs.” Nearly twenty years later, they both responded to customer needs with a focus on early gasoline technology.

An iconic moment for the company was the production of the first Caterpillar diesel engine, the D9900, in October 1931. After spending over $1 million on research and development, this engine made Caterpillar a pioneer in building vehicular diesel engines.
Did you know? The brand’s name comes from its caterpillar-like movement.
Today, these engines – with their original attributes intact – are still commonly found in electric power generation and equipment and machinery used in the petroleum, marine, locomotives, agriculture, construction and other ancillary industries. And just how our engine transcended decades, leading to individual and collective growth, our line of innovative and revolutionary products and services helped shape the modern world to become what it is today. It continues to power the growth requirements of tomorrow.

Caterpillar Subsidiaries & Brands Perkins India Pvt. Ltd (PIPL)
In 1998, Caterpillar Inc. acquired Perkins Engines Company Limited (PECL), UK, with more than 85 years of rich history to its name. This acquisition brought together two pioneers in developing and manufacturing diesel engines to provide unparalleled product offerings that cater to a wide range of industrial, marine and electric power applications. Today, Caterpillar wholly owns the Perkins brand and its ancillary companies. Perkins India Private Limited (PIPL) has already made a name for itself. It is known for manufacturing powerful engines that help meet
the needs of a growing customer base. For example, PIPL produces the powerful Perkins 4,000 and 5000 series diesel engines ranging from 750 kW to 2250 Kw for the electric power generation market. Supporting a wide variety of applications, including prime power for offices and factories, as well as, standby power for hospitals and data centers, the Perkins 4000 series is the engine of choice for many customers for power generation.
Progress Rail Innovation Private Limited (PRIPL)
Further, the assembly line in Perkins Engine Facility in PIPL, Aurangabad, Maharashtra, is the first Greenfield project of PECL, UK, in India. It is also worth noting that this facility was the first project under the “Make in Maharashtra” Mega Project. The then Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Devendra Fadnavis, inaugurated the facility in November 2016. With a total investment of USD 150 million at the Perkins India Aurangabad facility, it is also aligned with India’s “Skill India” initiative by actively partnering with technical institutions in the region to support an “Earn as you Learn” program.
In 1961, Indian Railways (IR) purchased 129 diesel-electric locomotives for operations in Ahmedabad and Sabarmati from Progress Rail Innovation Private Limited (PRIPL), formerly known as Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), a company later bought by Progress Rail Services. This relationship has only further strengthened over the last 60+ years. Since 1995, PRIPL has been responsible for bringing cutting-edge technology to India by partnering with Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi (a production unit owned by IR). This transfer of technology to IR , enhanced the nation’s in-house capability that helped to design and produce higher horsepower locomotives. This
led to creating a techno-entrepreneurial talent pool and related employment opportunities. Through its combined skill set, Progress Rail Services (PRS), provides solutions for several aspects of mine-to-port transportation in India,
offering complete railroad solutions to railways across the world, including locomotives, track, repower, signaling and safety technologies. In India, the railroad benefits from PRS’s complete railroad solutions, availability of parts and
