THE ALEXANDRA SCHOOL RETURNING FIFTHS -‐ ENGAGEMENT PROTOCOLS
ALEXANDRA SCHOOL RETURNING FIFTHS ENGAGEMENT PROTOCOLS PREAMBLE: Over the past few years, diverse approaches have been attempted to positively address the negatives that have been defining the attitudes and performance of those students who have been given an opportunity to return to school for an additional year. It has been felt that this second chance could be used to help improve these students’ lack of academic success in their normal school career. Unfortunately, each of these approaches has met failure as attitudes have remained below acceptable standards and performances have only marginally improved. The proposal outlined here identifies purposeful engagement, service and personal responsibility as the main pillars for accepted success.

ALEXANDRA SCHOOL RETURNING FIFTHS ENGAGEMENT PROTOCOLS
Dear Colleague, Further to my initial request of you, I write to confirm that you will be reviewing the Study Guides assigned to the different groups within the returning fifths class. As the following extract from the protocols suggests, this assignment is a requirement for their acceptance back at school. ALL RETURNING FIFTHS, WORKING COLLABORATIVELY IN SPECIFICALLY SELECTED GROUPS, WILL DEVELOP VIRTUAL “ALEXANDRA SCHOOL STUDY GUIDES” IN THEIR SUBJECT AREAS (AT LEAST TWO OVER THE YEAR) OF CHOICE. EACH STUDY GUIDE WILL INVOLVE THE PERTINENT TOPICS NEEDED TO BE GIVEN SUPPORT FOR SUCCESS AT THE CHOSEN LEVEL
FOR EACH CHAPTER, THE STUDENTS WILL:
• • • • •
IDENTIFY TOPIC PROVIDE EXPLANATIONS AND RULES PROVIDE WORKING EXAMPLES CREATE QUESTIONS PROVIDE ANSWERS
IT WOULD ALSO BE ACCEPTABLE FOR STUDENTS IN CERTAIN SUBJECT AREAS TO: TAKE SPECIALLY STRUCTURED QUESTIONS/PROBLEMS (EVEN FROM PAST EXAM PAPERS) AND GIVE WORKED SOLUTIONS. Consistent with this requirement, I am requesting that you kindly identify a listing of the specific topics that are seen as a mandatory for CXC success. Mrs. Lashley will be monitoring and supervising the students’ progress in completing this exercise. Sincerely, Jeffrey D. Broomes Principal
