BATH DECORATIVE ANTIQUES FAIR 6-8 March WHAT IS A DECORATIVE ANTIQUE? Many people ask that very question; and the Bath Decorative Antiques Fair has been the place to find out for more than 30 years! This much loved unique event offers visitors from both the trade and public a view into the world of antique dealers who are really artists in their own right. Decorative dealers have a talent to reinvent the way an antique or decorative object can be used in a captivating interior design setting. Since the launch of the Bath Decorative Fair 30 years ago, the dealers have embraced change in the fashion-led antiques industry and this has ensured that decorative antiques still lead the way in the crossover between the antiques and design trade. Using antiques designed for the garden inside the house has now become a firm trend with interior designers, and at Bath 2020 the theme will be “garden as gallery”. Exhibitors will bring a range of urns, sculpture, garden furniture, carved animals, gates and trellises, troughs and vessels of many sizes and materials to embellish the home and of course the garden. Visitors can also expect to find traditional Folk Art,

textiles, country house antiques, including upholstery and period oak dressers, and farm tables alongside Mid-century furniture and accessories. There will be antique Scandinavian furniture, architectural salvage – including beautiful chimney pieces sourced from France and Italy – and a wide range of art from period portraits through to modern and contemporary British and Scandinavian paintings. A choice selection of rugs and kilims, decorative vintage art de table, French mirrors, vintage luggage, designer vintage jewellery and bijouterie will also grace the stands. Positioned at the beginning of the Spring season, the fair is perfectly timed for its garden theme, and 45 exhibitors from across the UK will convene in the Georgian City of Bath to reveal their exciting stock saved for this annual event, which attracts an international audience and enjoys a unique atmosphere, almost club-like, among its many loyal exhibitors and clients. The queue on opening day is legendary – spreading all the way up to the main road from the front of the building, studded with stars of the antiques trade firmament who arrive hours before the doors open. Making a debut for 2020 will be Martin D Johnson

1) Simon Wharton Antiques: a French elliptical marble wine cooler on associated stone foot. 2) William Morris Antiques: Venetian cushion mirror with stone fountain head. 3) Martin D Johnson Antiques: a collection of antiques for the garden and conservatory. 4) La Place Antiques: pair of brass French Louis XVI directoire urns.

BRUSSELS DESIGN MARKET 14-15 March SINCE ITS CREATION in 2002, the Brussels Design Market has evolved into one of the largest design markets in Europe – bringing together one hundred professional dealers specialising in 20th century design. Maintaining its unique atmosphere usually characterised by a fleamarket, the Market has continued to grow and attract more and more visitors, year on year. This is a place that brings together dealers, collectors, interiors designers and design enthusiasts, who shop for outstanding pieces for their collections or homes. Arriving from all over Europe, the dealers present an eclectic selection, bringing together multiple styles and trends that have impacted on the 20th century. The two Sheds offer a very different feel; whilst the Market Shed has a Brocante feel, the Expo Shed offers mainly room sets. Visitors will find original and iconic pieces

from Italian, French, American, and Scandinavian design created by the biggest names of the time, such as Sottsass, Le Corbusier, Eames, Jacobsen and Panton. Alongside these icons, The Market also offers anonymous and exclusive design pieces at affordable prices.

Inflatable Furniture Each Market organises thematic exhibitions that highlight the works of designers or collections that have marked their era and influenced today’s world of design. This March will highlight Vietnamese designer Quasar Khanh – the master of inflatable design, and the man who created the first concept car, a transparent cubic automobile, known as the ‘Quasar Unipower. This special exhibition is showcased by Mid-century art dealer and owner of the Velvet Galerie, Benoît Ramognino, who will present the whole 1967 ‘Aerospace’ collection.

DESIGN ICONS AMSTERDAM 4-5 April THE FIRST WEEKEND OF APRIL brings the eighth edition of Design Icons – Europe’s largest vintage furniture trade show – where 75 professionals gather in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. Eco-friendly? Sure. Nostalgic? Perhaps. The most important reason why people are so in to vintage shopping though is that they simply love the iconic designs. The most famous interior pieces have been created in the Mid-century Modern period, whilst the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s are the years of the inspiring pioneers: Bertoia, Jacobsen, the Eames couple, Mies van der Rohe, Braakman, Panton and many others. The unique character of items that have a story to tell has great attraction, as well as superior quality. In addition, buying a piece that is never out of fashion can only be a really smart investment! In 2019 Design Icons expanded, adding 11 more stands, bringing the total of participating dealers to 75. And every year it gets busier and busier at the visitors’ entrance, with people travelling from Italy, Hong Kong and the USA to visit one of Europe’s largest vintage trade shows. The dealers come from all over Europe too. In a time where most vintage stores are online only, Design Icons is a unique chance to see so many design collections in real life. And there’s always a little bit of healthy competition between dealers when doing such a show; everybody striving for even better stock and a more attractive pitch than

they had the year before. It’s challenging and a great deal of hard work augmenting your best show of the year, and what a treat for the visitors to be able to cherry-pick their way through some of the most beautiful examples, all under the one roof! The show offers the complete experience where you can have a close up look at the furniture, try out a sofa and have a personal chat with the professional dealer about the history of the piece. Design Icons takes place in a 140-metrelong hall in the industrial building of De Kromhouthal in the North of Amsterdam, overlooking the IJ River and the city centre. Being away from the hustle and bustle of the centre has a bonus: parking is plentiful, which makes it easy to load all your wonderful buys! CENTURY TWENTY DESIGN SHOW 25 April AFTER A VERY successful and exciting first show, Century Twenty Design Shows is back this spring with more than 40 traders from across the UK. The show was launched last September, kicking off how it means to go on by hitting the design led market of Mid-century interiors from the outset. With a passion for the era and an appreciation of the sustainability benefits, the show’s organiser – who had previously exhibited a well-known furniture brand at large interiors shows across the UK – was inspired to start her own event. And as an added bonus this show and its London location are a marriage made in heaven. Held in the Main Hall of the Grade

Many of the original architectural features remain and traders and visitors alike love this venue as much as the show! Expert dealers offer a wide range, from design classics to vintage collectables, so there will be something for all budgets. With a dedicated designer/makers market too, you’ll find handmade pieces to complement your latest vintage finds. And if you’re looking for something in particular, just ask

– many of the dealers can source items for you, and often the designer/makers are happy to accept commissions tailored to your specific requirements.
