Festival of Vintage

Saturday 27th-Sunday 28th April York Racecourse Road, Knavesmire Road, York, YO23 1EX THE FANTASTIC Festival of Vintage once again returns to York Racecourse, taking over three buildings and four floors, as well as an extensive outdoor area for classic vehicles and displays. Enjoy the Vintage Dance Hall with a range of free dance lessons as well as plenty of chances for some social dancing – and you can even enter the Vintage Dance Competition! After bopping ‘til you drop, explore the Nostalgia Hall with the main ‘Rockin Stage’, loads of live music and dance floor, bar and refreshments. There’s also the Chap Lounge and Vinyl Corner, Vintage Inspired area and the incredibly popular Vintage Hair Parlour. The Vintage Arcade is packed to the rafters with arguably the best selection of early vintage fashion in the UK. Many stallholders save their very best stock for this event and organiser Keeley Harris told us that she’s always ‘constantly amazed’ at the quality that the stallholders bring with them to the fair. A great place to grab some proper authentic gear! The Best Dressed competition is another highlight with enthusiasts spending a lot of time on that perfect outfit – if you fancy having a go, then you need to enter in advance via the website. As well as clothing there’s a great selection of specialists selling Art Deco, Atomic and Utility homeware and accessories from the 1930s to the 1960s. All in all, a great weekend for all things vintage! festivalofvintage.co.uk

Giffords Circus-Xanadu 3rd May-29th September Various locations

ROLL UP, roll in to the stately pleasure dome for miracles, song, symphony and enchantment. Musicians, horses, clowns and tumblers enfolded in this joyful paradise, with music loud and long – the Giffords Circus caravan will be taking to the road for a 2019 summer of love with their new show Xanadu. Picture the scene – It’s midsummer 1973 in Hyde Park and the flower power movement is at its height. Hippies, hipsters, rock stars,

musicians, wild women and global nomads with Shamanic horses gather to play, sing, dance, protest and perform. Policemen and a family of out-of-towners get caught up in the celebrations. Will they get in the groove? Nell Gifford builds a pleasure dome and Tweedy has a job in the kitchen as he thought everyone was talking about “Flour Power”. As evening approaches, the ever more chaotic event careers towards a joyful, transcendental finale.

Nell and Toti Gifford began Giffords Circus in 2000 and since then they have taken a new show out on the roads of England every summer. Their vision was a miniature village green circus, bursting at the seams, packed, rowdy, tiny, a little band of performers who live nomadically, performing daily, engrossed in the serious business of making magic! Be there or be square! giffordscircus.com

Retro Festival

Friday 7th-Sunday 9th June Newark Showground, Newark NG24 2NY Photos: www.paulsillenceimages.co.uk

RETRO FESTIVAL started 12 years ago in Berkshire, and has since become the largest festival of its kind in the UK. Three years ago, the organisers decided to duplicate this successful recipe and take it further north to the Newark Showground. Wherever you live in the UK make sure you head to one of their events this summer – if you’ve never been before, you’re in for a treat! The Newark Showground will be full of exhibits with over 1,000 classic cars, American RV’s, vintage caravans, Hot Rods, Airstreams, Steam Engines, a 100-year-old vintage fun fair, re-enactors, and airshows, plus over 200 vintage stalls in the shopping village selling everything from clothes to furniture. Add to this live music marquees from the 1920s to 1940s at The Spitfire Pavilion, 1950s Rockabilly at The Black Hangar – and exclusively for the Newark event, The Alternative Stage, all playing until 11pm.

The really great news is that you can also camp for the entire weekend. Last year over 6,000 people stayed over in their tents or caravans or in one of the glamping Brook Bell Tents available on site. Don’t worry if you’re concerned that camping might ruin your hairstyle, as there’s an onsite hairdresser and barber to keep you looking tip-top! If you’re a vintage fashion lover, there’s a Spitfire Fashion Show taking place on the Sunday where the traders will be showcasing their latest fashion pieces. As well as the Retro Festival being a fantastic show for visitors, they’ve also raised an enormous amount of money for local children’s charities and various children’s cancer charities through sales of specially designed T-shirts and fundraising activities over the weekend. The really good news is – if you can’t make Newark this June, there’s always another, at Newbury in August! retrofestival.co.uk 50 / April-May 2019 / ve
