Resolution #1 Herman Rush (cover and page 33) disproves Mark Twain’s crusty theory that “the only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not.” The spry 81-year-old Ojai resident is a jackrabbit of a man, bounding through the fields of life as if there were a carrot perpetually dangling in front of his nose. Producer, author, collector, Hollywood insider… Writer Ivor Davis lists a few of Herman’s accomplishments, but his interview focuses largely on the unique relationship Rush shared with “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” Frank Sinatra. He also dips into the octogenarian’s well of experience looking for the elusive answer to the eternal question: What is the secret to longevity? He discovers, thankfully, that pizza, junk food, and trampolines are all part of the equation. Around this time each year health takes center stage. From November’s feast to December’s gluttony and January’s resolve to turn back the clock, we share these few months with an angel and a devil—our shoulder-sitting companions who at once whisper the health benefits of fudge (“Don’t forget, chocolate increases blood supply to the brain!”) and slap our wrists as we pour another drink (to decrease the risk of heart disease, of course). Yes, getting healthy is the most common New Year’s resolution. It’s also the most commonly broken one: research says that 60 percent of new gym memberships go unused and that

after an early January surge attendance is usually back to normal by mid-February. There are, however, times in life when the importance of health becomes unambiguous and entirely unrelated to sixpack abs. Take local artist Tesi Sanchez-Halpert (page 13), who had a stroke when she was just 48 and now uses her whimsical welded sculptures to raise awareness about the issue. In life we experience few moments of real clarity—junctures where existence is stripped to its naked essence—and the impetus is often related to death: the threat of it or the loss of a loved one. The other prime mover is life itself. Two weeks before the champagne corks of 2011 popped, our family grew by eight pounds, six ounces and the immediacy of eating, breathing, and sleeping took over our lives once again. To our new son, aka little brother, nothing beyond health is terribly important. The rest of the Top 10 New Year’s resolution list is meaningless. And truth be told, nothing outside of our familial bubble matters much to me right now either. Thanks again for tuning in. As we move into 2011 we’ll continue to shape Ventana based on your input, so keep the emails coming. Cheers to a happy and healthy new year! — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

NCL Patronesses and Ticktockers indulged in an afternoon of shopping and scrumptious food and drink, including a lemonade ice sculpture sponsored by Limoneira. More than 24 boutiques were represented, offering apparel, jewelry, flowers, gifts, gourmet food, and accessories. The event was hosted by Patronesses Amy Towner, Dawn Golden, and Lori Swanson, and was attended by approximately 100 NCL members, their daughters, and members of the community. Lose 1-2 Pounds of FAT Per Day!!!
Are you serious about losing weight? You can virtually melt away your FAT without strenuous dieting or excessive exercising. This is the best weight loss secret to come along in years - when you’re talking about FAST EFFECTIVE weight loss.
HOLD ON!!!
You might be afraid the “solution” will be worse than the problem, but let me assure you, it’s not! When you schedule an appointment you’re going to receive something that NOT only helps you lose weight, but also helps your appearance, your face, your complexion and even your body structure. Listen, I am a regular practicing doctor in Ventura, and I love helping people, just like you, lose that stubborn weight, without dieting, and then how to keep it off permanently.
Safe & Easy!
My exclusive weight loss management system is completely SAFE and has been proven to work. It is based on scientific principles that cause almost immediate changes and is strictly administered along common sense protocols. Here’s what most people don’t understand. When you’re heavy, you lose your strength, vitality, and you can become feeble. And on top of that you can age prematurely because your “fat” cells clog your body’s vital organs. That will change after you start utilizing this system. You
may be like some people who have lost their figure due to this “fat” clogging weight gain. The problem is, most overweight people are unable to find a simple, easy to follow system to reduce their fat and then keep it off. Even their coordination, daily movement and attractiveness are destroyed with this weight gain. That will all change when you start using this system.
Here is what I can do for you.
CALL the office NOW and schedule an appointment. You won’t have to make any radical changes in your lifestyle with this program, have surgery, or take any harmful drugs. Your treatments are private and you will start to lose 1-2 pounds per day, depending on your size, age, condition of your body and follow through. You will consult with me personally on a weekly basis for follow up and questions. Once you’ve reached your desired weight, you’ll have your shape back, have more energy, and you’ll have your self-esteem back. Doesn’t get any better than that!!
Get Rid Of YOUR FAT Now! “I've lost 9 pounds in 8 days and
I'm losing inches as well as weight! I didn't know it could be so easy.” ~ Gale C, CA Reserve your spot today. Call the office now to have access to this amazing weight loss technology. (10 spots available!)

A Welder’s Whimsy Profile
Life goes on for local artist and stroke survivor Tesi Sanchez-Halpert By Allison Costa Photos by Michael Robinson Chavez
M Meet Winston the dog. He’s a curious little fellow, with doorknobs for feet, ax blades for shoulders, and jowls made from horseshoes. Though he’s made of hard, rusty metal, he appears lovable and happy. He is one of Tesi Sanchez-Halpert’s latest creations. Known for her ability to transform scrap metal into whimsical home and garden sculptures, this Moorpark resident and stroke survivor has an inspiring story to tell. Some may call her an artist, others a welder, but when asked about her work, Tesi refers to it as play. Standing in her driveway on a chilly December morning surrounded by her “babies,” as she often calls her sculptures, and piles of scrap metal (old tricycles, bike chains, pitchforks, and license plates), she spoke about the hours she spends in her workshop. Though welding is no easy feat, she says, “I call it my play time. It’s my stress reliever. It makes me happy.” While she works with cold scrap metal and heavy steel tools, there is a softness and warmth in Tesi that is apparent the moment you meet her. Above the tools in her workshop hangs a simple sign that reads “Live. Laugh. Love,” and these words describe this artist perfectly. She lives her life with loads of laughter, embraces everyone she meets with love, and lives life to the fullest, even in the face of adversity. And all of this comes through in the flirty, sassy, smile-inducing characters that are her artwork. Tesi grew up on a ranch at the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, in a home full of children, a place where imagination was prized. Tesi would take long hikes, often finishing with a stop by her father’s junk pile, where she would often see faces and animals amongst the debris. Her first creation was for a tenth grade school project: a horse made from an old hammer, a large hinge, and two horseshoes that her father helped her weld. The long-time physical education teacher at Channel Islands High School was 48 years old when she suffered a stroke in 2004. Double vision, difficulty speaking, and problems with balance were just some of the

obstacles she has worked to overcome over the past six years, alongside her devoted husband, Dan, who arranged physical therapy, speech therapy, caregivers, and a gym membership to help her recover her balance. “He wanted me to get better; he wouldn’t stop,” she says. And he was the one who, after a short while, encouraged Tesi to go back outside— back to her welding gear —to play. Though no longer able to work as a teacher, Tesi keeps herself busy raising awareness about the signs of stroke. Her scraggly little dog, Dude, acts as her stroke awareness mascot. Tesi often dyes his ears red, using them as a conversation starter, an opportunity to educate people about the signs of stroke. Though she no longer does public speaking engagements on the topic, she always includes a list of the signs of stroke on the back of her biography at gallery showings. Referring to life after her stroke, Tesi says, “I love my new life as an artist because I have the opportunity to support different organizations by donating my artwork … I love knowing that my art is doing good.” The Brain Injury Center in Camarillo, Moorpark Hospice, and various local art galleries are among those on the list of lucky recipients. At Tesi’s gallery shows, visitors meet feisty animal characters with clever, joyful names. “Do I Look Fat in These Feathers?” shows a silly selfconscious chicken in an old birdcage, and “Life Is 14

a Balancing Act” shows three chickens teetering precariously atop a unicycle. The sense of whimsy in the latter is so palpable you can almost hear the squeals of laughter and giggles of childhood. “I like to create laughter. It doesn’t matter what kind of day I’ve had. Laughter helps you forget your troubles,” she says. And laugh you will when you come face to face with “King of the Remote,” a potbellied chicken with an old spoon for a cap lounging lazily and staring blankly at a large television made from an old tractor filter. Her way of seeing and interpreting the world is what sets Tesi apart as an artist. As Tom McMillin, a close friend and retired art professor, says, “Her work reflects the insight of a visual poet with the wit of a standup comic. Her work is highly sophisticated yet borders on hilarious. Picasso would have been envious.” Emily Thompson, of the Buenaventura Art Association, refers to Tesi’s sculptures as tactile, walk-around, 3-D artwork, saying: “Everyone reads the titles, comments, and loves them.” Despite her talent, Tesi remains humble; and despite her continuing battle to recover from her stroke, she is still one of the most positive people you’ll ever meet. “You have to make the best of what you have,” says Tesi. And that she has, in both her artwork and in her life. v Visit Tesi Sanchez-Halpert online at atesisculptures.com.

Many of the techniques are similar -- gliding (known as effleurage or Tui), kneading (petrissage or Nie), percussion (tapotement or Da), friction, pulling, rotation, rocking, vibration, and shaking. Breaking Down Walls
I
When Ilene Bernik and her late husband, Gale, set out to design their Oxnard home, the goal was to avoid closed spaces. The result—a sanctuary by the sea—evokes the fluidity of water and the empty calm of infinity. By Mark Storer Photos by Gaszton Gal If there are ghosts in Ilene Bernik’s life, she is comfortable with them. They seem comfortable with her as well. It would be impossible to be uncomfortable in the home she and her late husband, Gale, built in Oxnard near Channel Islands Harbor. Married just five years before Gale’s death, the couple traveled widely and spent time in New York, where Gale loved to be, but home was the house they built together overlooking the canals near Hemlock Street that lead to the harbor. The three-story home is less building than framing. “We wanted to build a house that had as few walls in it and as few closed spaces as we could and still have it stand up,” said Bernik. In essence, that’s what they built, too. The home is contoured and flowing with a constant feeling of gentle motion from the moment one enters. Corners have been eliminated as walls flow in rounded swirls all heading toward the south wall, which is all windows looking out to the canals leading to the harbor. Even the master bedroom on the second floor is framed in a glass wall that looks out to the south. The only closed in spaces are the elevator and the stairwell.
On the main level, wall spaces are punctuated and highlighted by works of art including a series of Argentine paintings Ilene and her husband bought while traveling there, as well as a series of porcelain sculptures and furniture that Bernik designed herself. The setting is, as Bernik describes it, “completely peaceful.” Indeed, she credits the house with her own healing processes—and not just from the grief of losing her husband. “It started with a relative of mine who was terminal,” Bernik said, her eyes welling with tears. “He said he felt peaceful here. He felt like everything was going to be O.K. He would just sit and watch the light change and come across the water through the windows,” she said. “It relaxed him.” Her sister died at age 28 and Bernik learned early that death was a part of life. She had her own diagnosis to contend with as well. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer before my husband died,” she said. Bernik’s struggle with the disease led her to City of Hope Hospital in Duarte and she has been in remission for some time now. January 2011

Labor of Love: Ilene Bernik designed most of her home’s furniture and personally redid the odd thrift store or garage sale find. Her late husband, Gale, cut the black walnut trees used for inlays in the maple floors (bottom right). Designed to allow a free flow of energy, the “completely peaceful” home has almost no closed spaces.

“I had a lot of complications but I never had the sense that I wasn’t coming home,” she said. “This house has been an anchor in all of that storm.” Now sharing the home with her mother, who lives on the third floor, Bernik’s memories are a mix of deep loss and reverence for what she has. “We built the house to be elevating spiritually, though not necessarily religiously,” she said. “I have a historic sense of my own Jewishness and I definitely believe there is something greater than me out there. There has to be.” Others recognize the unique and tranquil qualities of Bernik’s home as well. Ventura’s Rubicon Theater Company, in a nod to its patrons, holds gatherings there, bringing directors, actors, and theater personnel together to talk about performances and discuss what the theater is doing. “They come here and I’ll serve some refreshments and such, and we just have a nice evening,” she said. The setting is, of
January 2011
course, glorious. One of her physicians, Dr. Joy Fridey, now at Children’s Hospital, approached Bernik about her unique home. “They wanted to use it to shoot a video for the blood donor program,” she explained. “I’m painfully camera shy and I wasn’t sure.” But Bernik summoned her courage and, “for the greater good,” allowed a crew to film her and her dog, Baylor, a purebred bearded collie who has become her best friend, for the video. “We use that video, along with the other ones we have developed, as a recruitment tool,” said Dr. Fridey via email. “It does a very good job of showing the need for blood and platelet donation from the patient’s perspective as well as the donor’s.” The ghosts don’t seem to bother Bernik, or even her dog, Baylor. In fact, it may well be that she enjoys sharing the space with them as much as they enjoy being there. v

Herman Rush and the legacy of Sinatra IntERvIEW By IvoR DavIS PHotoS By JoE SoHm
When I fIrst met 81-year-old herman rush I expected a wheezing old geezer with a mile long tedious series of showbiz anecdotes. not nearly! Instead I got a feisty character plucked straight out of Budd schulberg’s classic 1940s hollywood novel “What makes sammy run?” he sits in his office surrounded by an amazing collection of sinatra memorabilia and warmly recounts his experiences with the music legend as well as time spent hobnobbing with most of the greats of the entertainment world. rush is a true polymath: a movie mogul; a producer; a home builder (in oxnard shores); an exporter of english taxicabs; a passionate collector; and a confidante, over several decades, of politicians and icons of hollywood. he has homes in Beverly hills and a magnificent citrus ranch in the ojai Valley, and he has managed to pack more into his 80 years than most men could do in a dozen lifetimes. he’s the kind of guy who will never get to his own funeral—he’ll be too busy to show up. even his wife of 60 years, Joan, his childhood sweetheart, continues to be awed by his boundless energy. twenty-five years ago rush decided he needed a weekend escape for his family, and to retain his own sanity in the frenzied world in which he had chosen to make a living. While attending a hollywood wrap party for a tV series, he discovered ojai. and
soon after, he found his 70-acre paradise, his very own shangri-la. It is here that he unwinds (although unwinding isn’t one of his priorities). his son Jim runs the family’s citrus ranch, and the spread also houses his unique collection of memorabilia: his sinatra recordings, movies, photos (including one of a callow, young herman in bowtie with ol’ Blue eyes), and assorted items you’d expect to find at the smithsonian. rush has covered the waterfront. he is the former chairman and Ceo of CocaCola telecommunications; he produced movies and television specials, as well as The Montel Williams Show. along the way, as a top agent and producer, he was involved in a wide assortment of hit shows, starring Perry Como, Jackie Gleason, and tom Jones, as well as comedies and dramas like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, That Was the Week That Was, and All in the Family, which was based on the hit British series Till Death Us Do Part. not long ago he wrote a book called “never Bored,” about his adventures in show business, and he insists it was aptly titled. “I’ve never been bored,” he says. “and I as long as I live I don’t intend to ever be bored.” Ventana magazine stopped by one recent afternoon to talk to the energetic octogenarian about his charmed life. VENTANA: When did you start collecting Sinatra?
HERMAN RUSH: In the forties, when I was 14. My uncle, Manie Sacks, was a record agent and he’d send me discs of Sinatra music they recorded, some released, some not. Then over the years he sent me lots of articles and pictures.
doing “God Bless America,” Sinatra on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial crooning “The House I Live In.” ABC gave me the green light on Sinatra’s name alone. So I flew to Lake Tahoe where Frank, who was a huge star, was appearing and told him we could only pay him $2,500, the same fee as all the others.
VEN: Was your uncle close to Sinatra?
VEN: Did he ask for more?
HR: He was an integral part of Sinatra’s life. Frank called him his “rabbi.” Even when Sinatra went to Capital Records and Manie to Columbia they stayed friends. When my uncle was dying, Sinatra left a picture in mid-shooting to visit him. Then he was a pallbearer.
HR: His lawyer did—half a million—the same as Frank got for his last TV special. Then Frank asked me what the AFTRA union scale was. I said $l78 and he said he would do it for that. Then he said it would be great if I could get a donation to the Palm Springs Hospital in his father’s name. I got a $50,000 donation. Two weeks before my show aired Frank was being blasted in the media about Mafia connections, so I called and said, “I’d like to tell the press that you worked for $178 and a hospital donation.” He said, “No way. That’s between you and me. It’s nobody’s business.”
VEN: Did you keep in touch with Sinatra?
HR: When I was in college he used to pay me to plug his records in Philly, Washington, and Baltimore. That was when we first had a photo taken together. VEN: Was Sinatra’s reputation as a firebrand accurate?
HR: I can’t deny he may have had a temper, but I only saw the good side of him. Whenever he saw me through the years he always associated me with my uncle, and it was a mutual respect. Did he want to be in control? Probably. In his business you have to have an ego. He was a star, and you have to have arrogance to be successful in that business. VEN: Did you ever see that arrogance?
HR: No. In l975 I sold the idea of 21 stars saluting America from 21 national parks or monuments to ABC for a bicentennial TV special: Ray Charles in the Grand Canyon 34

| January 2011
VEN: So you never clashed with him?
HR: Once we bumped into each other at Chasen’s Restaurant and I mentioned I had something in my Sinatra collection that he didn’t have. “Okay, smartass,” he said, “what do you have?” I told him I had an eight-millimeter home movie of his marriage to Ava—which took place in my Uncle Lester’s house in Philadelphia. Frank shrugged, but the next day his lawyer called and demanded the film. I offered to make him a copy and the lawyer said, “No way. Send me the negatives.” I did—after making an extra copy for myself.
VEN: Why did you switch from the frantic Hollywood scene to the tranquil Ojai Valley?
HR: Being a workaholic, I needed a change of pace to be with my family. I’d had a boat and a place in Palm Springs. But when I came to a TV wrap party in this area I fell in love. It was scenic, peaceful, and only an hour and a half from LA. VEN: What do you consider the secret to longevity?
HR: Keep your mind active, agile, and fit. I think youthfully, and although in my eighties—I’m not youthful—my thinking is. I’m fascinated by the new technology. I’m still a workaholic, starting at seven in the morning till seven at night. I don’t watch what I eat or follow any diets and I’m healthy, thank God. I like junk food, pizza, and Italian food. I work out in my house gym and on a trampoline.
“In his business you have to have an ego. He was a star, and you have to have arrogance to be successful in that business.”
VEN: What are you up to now?
HR: I’ve just finished 130 one-minute mini shows for General Mills, which are designed for mobile devices, cell phones, and the internet. They’re medical and nutritional tips of the day done by Dr. Bruce Hensel, who was science and health editor at NBC, and by nutritionist to the stars Kim Shapira. I designed them for short attention spans because the youth of America today want their entertainment in short spurts—and when they want it. v January 2011

a torch song version 2.0 This is the second in my Torch Song series. The initial design of this ring was done for wonderful young woman who had seen the first version of Torch Song here in Ventana. She brought me a family diamond that was about 2/3 carat and two smaller diamonds. She wanted the gem in the torch to be a pale blue like an Aquamarine. But an Aquamarine won’t stand up to everyday wear, so I found a pale blue sapphire that was the exact color we needed. Sapphire is very durable. The ring is in our proprietary 19K white gold that never yellows and doesn’t ever need “dipping”, the torch is in 18K yellow gold.
You too can have the ring of your dreams — and at an affordable price. Please come by or call me soon.
