“YOU JUST GO”

‘‘Y

ou really don’t think. You just go.” So sayeth Ed Wehan, a 75-years-young ultra-runner who is still going strong. He’s been running most of his life, but his best numbers he probably put up in the latter half. He ran his best marathon at 40, and was setting course records well into that decade. In his 50s, he came in third in the Rose City 50 miler in Portland, Oregon — six months after major surgery. Decades later, he continues to clock up the miles. His pace today isn’t what it once was, perhaps, but he’s still a force to be reckoned with . . . and in better shape than most people a third his age. Age, as they say, ain’t nothing but a number. And the stories in this month’s Health and Wellness issue attest to that. Anyone who does laps at the Ventura Aquatic Center on Kimball Road has probably run into Jim McConica — if you’re a morning person, that is. He hits the pool at first light every day, and is known for his grueling workouts. He missed the Olympics by a hair, but has been setting records in the U.S. Masters Swimming program for decades, starting in his 30s. Did we mention his open-water swims across both the English and the Santa Barbara channels? Or his relay race from Santa

Barbara to San Diego? At age 68, he continues to encourage and inspire other swimmers . . . and set records. Tracie Johnstone Currie is, at 51, far younger than these other two athletes — but in a sport like tennis, the senior circuit starts early. And while she was formidable in her younger years, this next chapter is just as impressive: more than a dozen national titles to her name, a world title in mixed doubles, and three appearances at the World Cup International Team Championships. When she’s not in competition, she’s taking the next generation to the net, coaching the boys and girls tennis teams at Ventura High School. Health and fitness is so often correlated with youth that it’s easy to forget that the love of sport, the drive to compete, the benefits of getting out there and moving don’t go away after so many changes of the calendar. Yes, Wehan, McConica and Currie set an unusually high bar . . . but you don’t have to set a record to keep doing the things you love — or going for it with something new. he Museum of Ventura County held the First Annual Bridge Builder Award Gala on April 27. The award celebrates the accomplishments of local leaders who have made a significant impact on the community. The first-ever honorees were the Thomas and Esther Wachtell family, recognized for their multigenerational philanthropy and support of cultural institutions such as the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, California State University, Channel Islands, Libbey Bowl and more. PARADISE IN PALOS VERDES Terranea Resort is a wellness weekend worth the drive.

WESTBROOK After a flat tire in Oxnard, traffic delay at scenic Malibu Rock (a Porsche commercial filming) and a quick detour to pass by my grandmother’s former home in Lunada Bay, I arrived at my weekend wellness retreat: Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes. The sprawling coastal resort, set directly at the ocean’s edge, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month — and I am not sure what took me so darn long to get here! I had forgotten how beautiful the drive is into bucolic Palos Verdes Peninsula. PV, as it’ s known to locals, somehow remains an unspoiled, very special place and Terranea Resort is a saving grace for many Angelinos and other residents in a 100-mile radius looking for a relaxing retreat.

QUIET MIND, HAPPY BODY Despite delays, I arrived in time for an afternoon “Quiet Mind” appointment at Terranea’s lovely spa — the perfect antidote to what had turned a 1.5-hour drive from Ventura into a fourhour sojourn. My brain was still roaring at high RPMs and I needed to put on the brakes. The valet took my car, check-in was swift (where I was offered water or a glass of sparkling wine) and I quickly unpacked and made a beeline to the spa, where other guests in soft, white robes resembled monks in the hushed atmosphere. Jaw-dropping ocean views from the spa’s indoor and outdoor lounge areas are akin to sailing on a cruise ship. I met Trina, the owner of Spa Lé La in Studio City. She told me that she comes here on her days off, specifically for the ocean views that, on a clear day, extend to Catalina Island. If a spa owner drives here from the San Fernando Valley, you know it’s bound to be fantastic. What exactly is a Quiet Mind treatment? A three-part marma massage (an Ayurvedic technique using pressure points) to “open energy pathways.” Marma points are energy centers that, when blocked, can lead to disease and aging; massaging them offers a variety of health benefits. The heavenly full-body massage was performed with oil infused with arnica, lemon grass and ylang ylang. The facial massage soothed with chamomile, jasmine and argan oil. The oil used for the scalp massage included green tea and rosemary. Angelina, my therapist, anointed my body with 12

the warm oils (all sourced from Blue Beautifly in Oakland) and used long, gentle strokes to lull and ease my mind and body almost to sleep. The hourlong treatment began and ended with hot towels on my feet. I took my après-treatment time in the eucalyptus and rosemary steam sauna. Add in a warming cup of ginger turmeric tea and a soak in the outdoor Jacuzzi, and my world was set right. I topped off my time in the spa at the The Body Bliss ™ bar. Using a clever iPad app, a person chooses and designs an “Intentional Aromatherapy” blend that is added to body butter, body oil, scrub or bath salts ($28-$32). My “super individualized” experience resulted in a blend called “Inner Peace” of ylang ylang, vetiver and orange with a dash of anti-aging pomegranate in a body scrub to take home. It seemed perfectly fitting and a good pairing after the Quiet Mind treatment.

DINING, HIKING AND FALCONRY The resort has eight restaurants with menus ranging from Asian cuisine to burgers and fries to a lovely lunch buffet to super healthy (the spa café, Solviva — highly recommened). My favorite spot, with the most impressive cuisine and great views, was the resort’s fine dining venue, Mar’sel. Sunday morning, after a full body workout in the fitness center, I enjoyed a fantastic brunch on the outdoor patio at Mar’sel. I’d return just for the biscuit topped with salt from the waters from Terranea’s beach cove that has been collected and dried onsite. (You can purchased small vials of the salts, some flavored.) The salt is tested and, rest assured, comes from the cleanest ocean waters in the area. Visitors should venture outside on the stunning peninsula to enjoy coastal walks and trails with inspiring views. So inspiring, in fact, that I’d stake my reputation to claim that the landscape here is a SoCal Big Sur. All resort activities such as guided coastal hikes, ocean kayaking, archery, horseback riding and more are available to the public: You do not have to be a resort guest to book these paid experiences or participate in complimentary ones. One of these is the half-hour Falconry Meet

and Greet. House falconer Joe Roy III shared lots of cool info and let us take pictures with his birds of prey (that keep seagulls and other pesky birds at bay) including Owlbert, a handsome Eurasian eagle-owl. Terranea’s stunning oceanfront location and special activities make for a great day trip for those who want to discover unique things to do in SoCal. If you can, splurge on a couple of nights and take advantage of the opportunity to, say, paint mandala rocks while sipping margaritas. An option, of course, is just to do nothing much at all — one of the best things about any wellness retreat. v

Instead, grown men and women are strutting about the Camarillo Yoga Center, clapping their hands, flapping their arms, crowing like roosters, beep-beeping like roadrunners, jabbering in gibberish (French gibberish, yet), and all the while laughing and behaving as if they were, well, far less grown up than it says on their driver’s licenses. And often, at the end of class, far more ready, willing and able to enjoy life, and one another, than they were when they entered the CYC 45 minutes earlier. These are the devotees of laughter yoga, a form of exercise which seeks relaxation and rejuvenation of the mind, body and spirit through the simple (if unconventional) use of intentional laughter techniques which bring about deep breathing that, in turn, boosts the intake of oxygen into the body, decreases cortisol (the stress hormone) and releases endorphins, all helpful in improving energy levels and overall well-being. Or, as laughter yoga co-leader Joan Woodward says, “Laughter

yoga is all BS — breath and smile.”

“WE’RE HERE TO SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER” A typical session at CYC starts with simple, rhythmic clapping to laughter syllables: ho, ho, ha-ha-ha, ho-ho, ha-ha-ha, with participants high- and low-fiving each other, and — above all — making eye contact. “That’s essential,” explains Jim Riley, another LY co-leader, whose regular job as a Caltrans engineer rarely produces the frivolity about to ensue. “We’re here to support one another as much as we are to be silly.” Soon, Riley is running his group through a series of exercises — a cowboy chortle (slap your knees and guffaw), a milkshake giggle (mix it up and pour it on yourself and each other), a penguin walk, an ants-in-your-pants shimmy — with periodic rests. “The laughter muscle doesn’t know real from forced,” he grins. “The benefits are the same. So fake it ’til you make it.” “Exercises” don’t last more than 15 or 20 seconds. But if it induces laughter and participants open their minds, hearts and internal giggle-boxes, the benefits add up. “It has a subtle effect,” smiles Paul, a technical writer who’s attended LY sessions “off and on” for over 10 years. “My work can be rather serious, and I find I’m much more attuned to subtle puns or humor in life, and maybe have more verbal agility, after doing these strange exercises. And the play aspect is just wonderful.” Priscilla, a service veteran, says LY has helped her deal with PTSD and depression. “When you laugh,” she says, “the endorphins kick in, your brain chemistry changes and you walk away feeling more positive about yourself. I can come in here, enjoy being silly with everyone and feel better for two weeks, just in time for the next class.” “It’s great to be accepted and to accept others,” says Thelma, a retired teacher who began coming a few years ago. “I guess I was too serious for a while. The world moves so fast, we’re always stressing about something, and by coming to this group, having fun, making eye contact, we can deal much better with all that stuff in life that drags us down.” Debbie, another longtime attendee who works during the week with crime victims, delights in the diversity of the group. “We’ve had folks in their 80s and 90s who are so cherished by the group, even if they aren’t as agile or mobile,” she smiles. “You’re accepted wherever you are at, and that alone helps lighten your load, to be surrounded by these amazing people.”

“GENUINE BELLY LAUGHTER” The health benefits of laughter were noted in Norman Cousins’ book, Anatomy of an Illness, in which the author, diagnosed with a terminal illness, watched old Candid Camera TV shows and film comedies as part of his self-prescribed therapy. “I made the joyous discovery,” Cousins wrote, “that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me at least two hours of pain-free sleep.” In the mid-1990s, Dr. Madan Kataria of India experimented by having test groups share jokes and funny stories. After realizing that the jokes became less funny over time (or perhaps weren’t that funny to start with), Kataria and his wife, Madhuri, a yoga instructor, developed a series of exercises that substituted laughter for deep breathing. So was born laughter yoga, which Kataria believed for fullest effectiveness required a group setting in which the focus was on healing, not necessarily on comedy. “All the group members,” Kataria says in a Youtube video, “must understand that what we are doing in a laughter yoga session is not an entertainment or amusement. . . . We are doing exercises, cardiovascular exercises.”

“SET ASIDE YOUR SERIOUS SIDE” Laughter yoga’s therapeutic effects have impacted many, including Roni Tagliaferri, a Camarillo cancer survivor and yoga practitioner who in the early 2000s was so inspired by Kataria’s work that she trained to become a laughter yoga leader, leading sessions at Camarillo Yoga Center with the blessing of CYC founder-owner Audrey Walzer. “It’s lots of deep breathing that’s also fun and light-hearted,” says Tagliaferri, who led LY sessions almost every Saturday for nine years at CYC before retiring and training the current leaders. “I tell people, 22

‘Set aside your serious side.’ Because you’re engaging with people who are active, full of life and excitement. And it’s not gonna hurt you; if anything, it relaxes you.” Both the physical and psychological health benefits, she says, “are amazing,” whether people participate because of physical, emotional or spiritual health concerns. “It’s hope and it’s health-giving, good for everyone. And there is this amazing energy, love and care in the group that gives you such a re-charge when you come. When you dump happiness on someone else, you dump it on yourself.” Walzer, a yoga teacher for 48 years, is an occasional class participant and fully supports laughter yoga, offering her studio at no charge for the Saturday sessions. “It is different than traditional yoga because it takes you to places that, as adults, can make us uncomfortable,” she notes. “So often, adults have this image of themselves that gets in the way of being able to have fun. But in laughter yoga, all you’re doing is playing, which is what you’d be doing if you had a 3-year-old with you. And that’s a valuable part of living.” Physiologically, Walzer explains, when you laugh, you breathe, “and good laughing means you breathe in more oxygen. And psychologically, your mental attitude affects how your body responds to illness or even just the stresses of daily life. And the more positive your attitude, the better your body can respond. Laughter helps you get to a positive place.”

A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE Few are more positive than co-leader Woodward, an energetic, outgoing former marine biologist who looks and acts nothing like a 76-year-old grandmother. “Laughter yoga is about playfulness,” she says. “Find your inner child, allow that child to play — laugh, breathe and release. You won’t experience it the same way each time, or the same as anyone else. It’s about connecting with others through the vibrations of laughter.” As a hospice volunteer, Woodward has used laughter yoga to connect with patients. Anyone can do it, regardless of age, size, station in life or even language. “All you need to bring,” says Walzer, “is comfortable clothing, an open mind and your curiosity.” Woodward’s husband, Lee, who teaches conversational English in Camarillo, brought his class with people from Ecuador, Mexico, the Ivory Coast and Iran to experience laughter yoga. All were embraced by the group, and communicated just fine. “Laughter,” smiles Woodward, “is an international language.” At the end of each session, LY participants gather for a “laughter meditation,” a bit of “free-form” laughter and quiet time, before “sending out” joy and happiness to anyone and everyone in the world they feel could benefit — which, Woodward notes, “is a lot of everyones.” The class closes with a simple mantra: “We are the happiest people in the world. We are the healthiest people in the world. Three local athletes prove that the drive to succeed doesn’t dampen with age. BY KEN MCALPINE

eet three remarkable athletes who will change your perspective on aging. Yes, their (ongoing) athletic accomplishments read like something out of a pathological liar’s notebook. But really, their stories have little to do with athleticism. You’ll see the common theme here. Tracie Johnstone Currie, Jim McConica and Ed Wehan have made their sports a part of their lives, and those pursuits have made their lives rich far beyond resumes. As Wehan, the oldest of the bunch, points out, it isn’t over until it’s over. “We haven’t defied aging,” says Wehan with a grin. “We just live with it, with the goal of doing as much as you can do within the constraints you have to live with. The satisfaction of being successful in that context is just as fun as it was 40 years ago. The joy of competition continues.” }}

ED WEHAN Before the running, which established him as a wiry exemplar of impossible possibilities, Ed Wehan was a good enough tennis player at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in the 1960s to find himself looking across the net at Arthur Ashe. Even Wehan’s sense of perspective is healthy. “You know what the best part was?” Wehan says. “Sitting around in the locker room afterward talking about school.” But mostly, it was (and is) about the running. In 1979 Wehan ran the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run — 100 miles of hellish horse trail through the Sierra Nevada range from Squaw Valley to Auburn. It was the event’s early years; in a sense, the runners were not unlike the first astronauts. “No one ran 100 miles across the Sierras, but that’s what made it interesting,” he says. Interestingly, he finished 7th overall in 18 hours. Don’t laud Wehan for his mental toughness. “You really don’t think,” he says. “You just go.” Wehan’s march across the calendar pages makes you think. At 40, he ran his best marathon; 2 hours and 36 minutes. The following year he ran in the 50 mile national championships. He placed 7th overall, finishing in 5 hours and 39 minutes. (That’s a 6:47 mile pace.) In 1987, at 43, Wehan won the Avalon Catalina 50 Mile Race and, in doing so, set a course record that stood for a decade. He is not invincible, or without setback. In 2001 he underwent open heart surgery to address his atrial fibrillation. (“Just so I could continue to run, backpack and enjoy the outdoors.”) He did wait six months before running the mountainous Portland, Oregon Rose City 50 miler, finishing 3rd overall. Yes, at 75 Wehan still runs. But these days he funnels a large part of his stamina into a pile of civic endeavors nearly as high as the Sierra Nevadas. He serves tirelessly for so many groups and boards it might be easier to run 100 miles. Among them is the Ventura Land Trust, whose mission is to acquire public access lands so that folks can hike, bike and, yep, run through the wild.

JIM McCONICA Jim McConica was once one of the best swimmers in the world. Competing at the University of Southern California, he was a six-time NCAA gold medalist. In 1971, he was a member of a world record-setting 800-meter freestyle relay. He missed a berth on the 1972 U.S. Olympic team by one-tenth of a second in the 200-meter freestyle. And that’s where things got interesting. For a long time McConica viewed

his Olympic near miss as the ultimate failure. It’s a long story, but the short version is that McConica returned to swimming in his early 30s and swimming has not been the same since. He turned Masters pool swimming on its head. He turned long distance open water swimming on its head, too. Failure, in the right hands, is excellence. Now 68, McConica’s work ethic has no weak link. Day after day after day, his workouts are both legendary and grueling. Someone once swore they saw McConica break a Masters world record in practice while wearing long pants. If this is true, McConica just forgot his suit. “We are what we repeatedly do,” he smiles. “Excellence is therefore not an act but a habit.” Yes, these are Aristotle’s words, but few people make them as true. McConica has set masters national and world records in every age group since he was 30. He has swum the English Channel (21 miles), crossed from Catalina Island to the mainland ( 21 miles) four times and participated in an ocean relay swim from Santa Barbara to San Diego (yes, you read that right). One year, a Ventura High School senior broke McConica’s record for the swim from Anacapa Island to the mainland. Twenty-three days later, McConica snatched the record back. He was 61. At 65 he became the oldest swimmer to complete the Catalina Channel. That record has since been broken. We know what that means. But here’s what makes all of these athletes different. “All that stuff is pretty cool,” says McConica, “but I am also really proud of the people I train with. Eighteen months ago, one of my young friends, Karina Garcia, set the overall women’s record for crossing the Anacapa Channel. Very cool.”

TRACIE JOHNSTONE CURRIE Yes, Tracie Johnstone Currie’s tennis resume is nothing short of astonishing. She won her first national title at 14. As a junior player, she was ranked as high as 25th in the nation in singles, and as high as No. 3 in girls’ doubles. She was Arizona High School state champion. From 1987 through 1991, she was the No. 1 singles and doubles player at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the first UCSB female tennis player to qualify for the NCAA Championship tournament. Laurels you could easily rest on, but why? After 40, she decided to play on the senior tour. Like Wehan and McConica, Currie has a sense of humor and perspective. }}

“In the tennis world, once you turn 35 you’re a senior,” she says. “It also goes all the way through the 90s. Something to shoot for.” As a questionable senior (at 51, she’s by far the youngest of our role models), Currie has won 15 gold ball national titles, four silver and four bronze. Pairing with tennis legend Rick Leach, she won a world title in mixed doubles, and she’s played doubles with various other former tennis notables, including Jeff Tarango, Debbie Spence Nasim and Stacy Margolin Potter. Currie represented the United States in the World Cup International Team Championships three times. But most important, she never forgot what got her there — which is why she teaches kids’ summer camps at the Pierpont Racquet Club in Ventura. And, for the past three years, she’s been the head coach of the Ventura High School girls and boys teams. Last year, the Ventura boys won the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Division 3 Championship. (Among her players is son Chase Currie.) Through this she gets more than she gives. “Coaching the Ventura High School boys and girls tennis teams has meant so much to me,” Currie says. “And, in terms of aging, my husband says I think I’m back in high school again.” v

With the opioid crisis spiraling out of control, suspicions of Big Pharma on the rise and ongoing debate about the best practices for human health, there is growing interest in alternatives to pharmaceautical medicine. Herbal remedies for everything from the common cold to cancer are being explored. Echinacea (for boosting immunity), St. John’s wort (for depression) and cannabis (for a variety of conditions) have all been shown to have tangible benefits backed by science. But as the field widens, so do the questions . . . and confusion. Dr. Stace Nelson-Hicks, a licensed acupuncturist and doctor of Chinese medicine who operates out of her offices in Ventura, helps break down the facts regarding herbal remedies. Ventana Monthly: When did you decide to become an acupuncturist? Nelson-Hicks: When I was in my late 20s/early 30s I had what I considered to be the worst PMS anyone could suffer from: I only had one good week a month, otherwise I was in physical pain and an emotional wreck. All my MD had to offer was the birth control

pill, which I wasn’t interested in due to my family’s health history. Looking for alternatives, I found a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.), who used a combination of personalized herbal formulas and acupuncture, and turned my life around in about 8 weeks! [I] went headlong into Asian Medical school, completing a four-year Master’s program in three years.

When did you become interested in the use of herbs for healthcare? Before I found my L.Ac. I knew I needed something to help me through the PMS. . . . I went to a health food store where a clerk suggested a supplement. After a month of using it with no results, I knew I needed herbs that were tailored to my own internal situation. After having such a positive experience

. . . has been studied for its positive effects on prostate, breast, uterine and bladder cancers. Cinnamon is a star in traditional Eastern herbology. Used as a warming herb, it treats winter and springtime bugs. It’s very important to use Cinnamomun verum or Sri Lankan cinnamon. (The cinnamon we find in most supermarkets is Cinnamomun cassia which has a constituent, cou-

Cinnamomun verum has been found to be an antioxidant; most likely due to its high proanthocyanidins content — the same ingredient that gives blueberries, cranberries and grapes their health benefits. Studies have shown that cinnamon is a natural antibiotic and . . . a natural addition to treating blood sugar issues. It is also a great digestive herb . . . and contains eugenol, a natural anesthetic. So it can be also be used topically in a salve as pain relief for minor cuts and scrapes. Astragalus, also known as Huang Qi, is an herb that is getting a lot of attention at the health food stores. In TCM [Traditional Chinese medicine], it is considered a tonic herb, meaning that it enhances overall function. We use it as an herb to treat fatigue, diarrhea, loss of appetite. You’ll see it in over-the-counter remedies for colds and flu because it can strengthen lung immunity. A recent study published in Pharmacognosy Review found that the flavonoids in this herb (in mice studies) have anti-

What are the most commonly prescribed herbs, and how are they used? Herbs seem to go through trends as research progresses. Currently, the herbs that have been in the media are turmeric, cinnamon, Cordyceps and Astragalus. Turmeric is making headlines because one of its constituents, curcumin, has been found to be highly anti-inflammatory, which works on the same anti-inflammatory pathway as the prescription drug Celebrex. In fact, a UCLA study just reported in The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that taking a daily dose of curcumin may not only prevent memory problems from worsening over time, but actually improve them. . . . The dosage was 90 mg daily, using a highly bioavailable form, so it’s not the same as seasoning your food with the herb — but that certainly won’t hurt. Turmeric also 38

oxidant and radioprotective activities, are liver protective, have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system . . . and are also anti-inflammatory. Cordyceps is another herb that is highly valued in TCM and is making its way into the Western pharmacopeia and has an interesting origin. Known as Dong Chong Xia Cao, it is the fungus that grows on deceased caterpillars! It is considered a warming herb that addresses the lung and kidney energy, providing the patient with increased stamina and efficiency. . . . It has been shown, as documented in 2011 in the journal Herbal Medicine: Biomolecular and Clinical Aspects, 2nd edition, to have health effects including benefits to the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, sexual (it’s known to increase testosterone production) and immunological systems, as well as having anti-cancer, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. Do these herbs have adverse effects? What should patients know before using herbal remedies? Always speak with your herbalist and oncologist before beginning an herbal regimen to make sure there are no known contraindications with other medications you may be taking. Turmeric [for example] is among the spices known to inhibit iron absorption. [Astragalus] is contraindicated if you have a fever or lots of phlegm . . . and may not be the correct herb [under numerous] circumstances. Cordyceps may increase the adverse effects of antidiabetic or anticoagulant/ antiplatelet drugs. All herbs, like prescription medications, have values and limitations. In my opinion, there is no such thing as a cure-all. There is a time and place for each botanical and it depends on the conditions you are trying to treat, how long you’ve had the condition and other lifestyle modifications a patient is willing to make. Let’s talk about the limitations — when are herbs not enough? I like to say, “start small and bring out the big guns later.” For instance, I’ve had patients’ urinalysis test positive for urinary tract infections and for many reasons they don’t want to use prescription medications. I’ll start them on a dose of herbs for seven days and retest. Often the herbs are all they need. Of course, if their symptoms don’t change or progress I will refer them back to their primary physicians. . . . If my patients have a Western medical diagnosis, I always work closely with their MDs to monitor progress. What are some of the biggest misconceptions about herbal remedies? Myth: All herbs are safe to take without supervision. This may be true even for some herbal

teas, which are a very gentle way of adding plant substances to your diet. But many people have allergies or DNA [variations] which mean they can’t process certain chemicals easily without side effects. Recently Gou Ji berries became very popular as an anti-aging herb. The plant is in the nightshade family and can flare-up rheumatoid arthritis. It can also be difficult to digest and lead to intestinal distress. Herbs are chemically active and some are contraindicated in certain conditions such as hormonally-sensitive cancers. Herbs can even interfere with certain drugs such as [blood thinner] Coumadin. Acupuncturists are required to know this information and, in order to be re-licensed every two years, we need to take continuing education classes on herb/drug interactions. What should patients consider or look for when using herbal remedies? Patients should always look for a licensed herbalist; in California, acupuncturists and naturopathic doctors (N.D.) are the only practitioners who are licensed. This means we’ve studied the herbs and passed a board exam. Herbs are potent medicines. Just because they are all natural doesn’t make them safe or appropriate in all circumstances. Like pharmaceutical drugs, herbs may have interactions with each other, with over-the-counter medications or prescription drugs. Licensed professionals are aware of these contraindications and know how to prescribe natural remedies. The Chinese herbal pharmacopeia is expansive: We have more than 10,000 herbs to choose from and many health food stores have taken to selling these medicinals. If you don’t have the proper diagnosis, at best they won’t work, at worst you will do harm to yourself. Another important tip is that Amazon may not be the best place to buy your supplements; it is well known in our field that many of the products sold by third-party vendors may be counterfeit or past their expiration date when they get to you. Final thoughts? Herbs are a wonderful addition to a healthy lifestyle. The ingredients in your spice rack are a great place to start — add dill, fennel, anise, cayenne, pepper, oregano or mint to your meals for an added boost of antioxidants and flavor! . . . [G] o to the produce section of an organic market and start with ginger, dandelion greens, scallions, onions, garlic and begin using them in your meals. Use trusted sources; there are some great books out there. For those who don’t know our history, the Ventura Music Festival was created in 1994 to showcase the City by bringing world-class music to the community. Today – 300,000 festival-goers, 200 concerts, and 40,000 elementary school children later – we are proud of our record and proud to continue with you a journey through a world of remarkable music that welcomes all.

For our 2nd weekend, it’s high-octane Latin guitar from Incendio leading off with a free outdoor concert in Mission Park. Next up: 16-year-old jazz phenom Joey Alexander, “the brightest light in jazz piano, a bona fide star.” Billboard chart-toppers Ranky Tanky follow with extraordinary songs springing from the storied Gullah culture of South Carolina. Lastly, it’s the Rastrelli Cello Quartet with four Russian cello virtuosos serving up a surprising and delightful program of classical, pop and jazz from Brahms to the Beatles with a little Puccini in-between.

This year’s July festival is an especially rich cultural and musical brew: The Manhattan Transfer and Take 6, in an historic coming-together of two of the best vocal groups on the planet. The PBS series Soundstage broadcast The Summit concert experience last year nationwide. The Manhattan Transfer continues in its fourth lineup to set the high bar as one of the world’s most powerful and innovative four-part harmony groups since its founding 47 years ago by Tim Hauser (1941-2014). Beginning with

their first performances in the 1970s, these members of the Vocal Hall of Fame have become cornerstones of contemporary music, known for their amazing category defying versatility, and incorporating pop, jazz, R&B, rock and roll, swing, symphonic, and a cappella music. Just a few “peaks” in the quartet’s over 30 albums include Extensions, Mecca for Moderns, S/T, Brazil, Pastiche and Vocalese with 12 Grammy nominations in 1985, the most in that award’s history. Take 6—six virtuosic voices united in clear harmonies against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms that bubble into an intoxicating brew of gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop—are recognized as the world’s pre-eminent a capella group or, as Quincy Jones calls them, “the baddest vocal cats on the planet.” From its first critically acclaimed and awarded eponymous release in 1988 to its most recent (2018) sixteenth album Iconic, Take 6 has remained the original torchbearer ensemble able to carry such classics as Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World, Ladysmith Black Mambazo hits, Ben E. King’s Stand By Me and Woody Guthrie’s This Land Is Your Land to new heights beyond any music genre borders. The sextet has come a long way from their days at Huntsville, Alabama’s Oakwood College where McKnight formed the group originally named The Gentleman’s Estate Quartet in 1980, followed by Sounds of Distinction, then Alliance and, in 1987, Take 6.

Christopher Parkening—”America’s reigning classical guitarist”—is celebrated for his rare combination of dramatic prowess, eloquent musicianship and uniquely beautiful sound that has captivated audiences around the world for over 40 years. Heir to the legacy of the great Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia, he has performed at the White House, Live from Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall’s 100th anniversary celebration; and appeared in innumerable recitals and as guest soloist with the globe’s finest orchestras. His extensive discography includes Grammynominated Parkening and the Guitar and The Pleasures of Their Company; Christopher Parkening Celebrates Segovia; Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez; and the performer’s silver anniversary 2-CD collection The Great Recordings. Parkening is Distinguished Professor of Music at Pepperdine University in Malibu, where the annual Parkening International Guitar Competition for young artists is held. The devoted educator is author of many pedagogy books and music folios for players plus an autobiography Grace Like A River. Jubilant Sykes “is authentically passionate and vocally enthralling, masterfully fusing his classical, jazz and gospel backgrounds,” says Opera News. “Perhaps no vocalist of our time possesses a more exquisitely versatile instrument than this American baritone,” says The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Mr. Sykes has performed with such leading artists, ensembles and stages as Reneé Fleming, Julie Andrews, and Carlos Santana;

O Caçador (The Hunter) exhibits the lively blend of Brazilian rhythms, folk music forms and highly appealing melodies that Brazilian guitarist and composer Laurindo Almeida (1917-1995) called samba-jazz, part of the larger “climate” of bossa nova. Boi bumba (Bull, charge!) cry the crowds at the Amazonia Folklore Festival, a Carnival-like musical play about the life, death and resurrection of a magical ox. Pámpano verde (Tendril green) young vines entwine with maidens “walking at such an hour” in this delicate song by a sacred and secular Spanish composer Francisco de la Torre (14??-1507) who served at the court of the Kingdom of Naples in Italy. Granadinas is a traditional farewell adapted by composers Tomás Barrera and Rafael Calleja (both 1870-1938) as Adiós, Granada for their zarzuela Emigrantes, a Spanish theater form blending verismo opera, operetta and Iberian folkloric idioms. For his Old American Songs, Aaron Copland (1900-1990) adapted the Minstrel song Ching-a-Ring Chaw by revising its dialect lyrics but retaining its exuberant tempo and vision of a bright future in the Promised Land. For his twelfth string quartet Opus 127 Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) leaves behind his middle period heroics for a late style that quests for the wholeness of vision and sacred order he was reading about in Hindu philosophy—“a spiraling inwards” away from drama and struggle and into acceptance, tenderness and clarity. After opening with a triumphal echo of the Eroica Symphony it modulates towards a meditative serenity. Next comes a set of extraordinary variations or transformations that evoke lift, wonder and playful games of “leapfrog between the violins”—a mood intensified with the Scherzo’s contrapuntal gallops, grace steps and stomps. The Finale is a fast and curious downhill race to a “trilling” dissolution, an all-inclusive vision of profound love.

Pulitzer Prize-winning American violinist, singer, and composer Caroline Shaw (b. 1982) wrote her eighth string quartet Nimrod for Calidore at first in “calm and optimism” but finished during the turmoil of the 2016 Presidential election. The slow second essay references the Echo chamber that social media fosters in our political discourse and the third title refers both to gem stone and the programming language Ruby developed in Japan in the mid-1990s. Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) composed Opus 80 in the wake of his beloved sister Fanny’s untimely death shortly before his own. The grief, anxiety and defiance of the first two movements gives way to a sense of melancholy, nostalgia and tenderness in the third but no sense of consolation for the finale—only trembling, disquiet and fist-shaking anger. Classical and folk inspired Liza Carbé, with pop and Jimi Hendrix influenced husband Jean Pierre Durand cofounded Incendio in 2000 with Jim Stubblefield. They are veterans of many, many bands, have composed extensively for TV and independent films, nine Incendio international CD releases, a duo CD A Bridge Between, and have produced over 30 CDs by other artists. Jim Stubblefield encountered the world fusion acoustic guitar recordings of Shakti and Strunz and Farah and began releasing solo CDs before and since co-founding Incendio, including Cities of Gold, Rhythm of the Heart and Inspiración. Timothy Curle, on faculty at the Los Angeles Music Academy (LAMA), studied percussion at University of Oregon and USC, has performed extensively on stage, and in TV and film studios; and for such major artists as Herbie Hancock, Josh Groban and Chris Botti, to name just a few. Bali-born (in 2003) Joey Alexander taught himself to play the piano at 6, learning jazz from both his father and by listening at home to his dad’s large jazz record collection. Moving to Jakarta at 8, he was invited by UNESCO to play solo piano for Herbie Hancock. At 9 he won the grand prize at the Master-Jam Fest in Ukraine and went on to perform at jazz festivals in Jakarta and Copenhagen. At 11 Wynton Marsalis asked him to debut at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and appearances at the Grammy Awards and White House and a feature on “60 Minutes” soon followed. Now 16 and living in New York, the global artist will present an evening with his trio featuring songs from his Grammynominated debut album My Favorite Things and second CD Countdown; as well as the 2017 release Joey. Monk. Live! honoring Thelonious Monk’s centennial; and his recent tour de force studio album Eclipse. Building upon the swing and improvisational style that have made his performances a critical and popular success at well-known venues and major

festivals around the world, the piano prodigy continues to astonish with his “every step toward a limitless future as a jazz bandleader,” composer and musician “hinting at the many artistic paths open to him in the decades ahead.” Expect to hear jazz classics penned by John Coltrane, Ray Noble and Bill Evans, Beatles’ hits, reverent gospel re-imaginings and his own original compositions. Baltimore-born bassist Kris Funn graduated with honors from Howard University and, at 23, began touring internationally, traveling to every major jazz festival, appearing on many recordings and bringing his immense skills to the bands of Kenny Garrett, Christian Scott, Nicholas Payton and Sean Jones and, in 2018, an album of his own compositions, Cornerstone. Quincy Phillips, who holds a B.A. in Music from Howard University, is a drummer, pianist and organist at his home church, East Baltimore Deliverance. A 30 year veteran of the music industry, he’s performed at the White House for President Barack Obama and continues touring with the ensembles of renowned musicians and composers, Roy Hargrove and Christian McBride.

The songs of Ranky Tanky spring from the storied Gullah culture of Georgia and South Carolina’s Lowcountry and Sea Islands where life is laced with the African ways of a creole people originally transported as slaves from one “rice coast” (Africa’s) to another (America’s). “Gullah” comes from West African language and means “a people blessed by God” and “Ranky Tanky” translates loosely as “Work It,” or “Get Funky!” in Gullah’s distinctive African-American patois. Emerging from this still fertile cultural epicenter, the Charleston, SC based quintet—four Gullah descendants and one disciple— have joined together to revive a heartland of American roots music born in their own backyards to preserve and perform it for today’s audiences. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from backbreaking slavery work songs to heartbreaking spirituals and delicate lullabies—it’s timeless music seasoned with large doses of jazz, gospel, funk and R&B so a new generation can relate.

The result? Ranky Tanky released their eponymous debut on October 20, 2017. By December of that year, the group had been profiled on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and their album, which NPR called “soulful honey for the ears,” had soared to the number one position on the Billboard, iTunes, and Amazon Jazz Charts. “Lead singer Quiana Parler [an alumnus of American Idol ] is a powerhouse presence,” says Downbeat magazine, “and trumpeter Charlton Singleton is amazingly adept at crafting lines that complement the singer’s timbre….Electric guitarist Clay Ross plays in a style that seems to draw a connection to West African music of the 20th century. The ensemble’s name comes from the 18th-century architect who designed the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, home city of three of the four quartet members. The Rastrelli have performed in Europe’s great concert halls—Munich Gasteig, Berlin Philharmony, Konzerthaus Vienna, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and Philharmonic Hall and Mariinsky Theater St. Petersburg—as well as Europe’s leading summer music festivals—Beethoven Festival Bonn, Darmstadter Festspiele, Branderburgische Sommerkonzerte, Rheingau Musikfestival and Ohridsko Leto (Macedonia)—and the Meadowlark Music Festival USA. The Rastrelli Quartet currently has eight albums—Rastrelli, Volumes 1-6, Cello Effect and Cello in Classic. Great performing Bohemian cellist, influential teacher and composer David Popper (1843-1913) created graceful but demanding concertos and salon pieces for cello and piano such as the Tarantella, the spirited Italian folk dance form in lively 6/8 time.

The second movement of String Quartet No.1, Op. 11 in D major, by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) is perhaps the most famous and popular of any Andante cantabile in the classical repertoire, prized for its “walking pace” (faster than adagio but slower than allegro) and its “flowing and songlike” (cantabile) melodies. Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) wrote his second most popular work (after his Piano Concerto), the incidental music (later arranged as two suites) for Henrik Ibsen’s satiric five-act verse drama Peer Gynt about the downfall of a Norwegian peasant anti-hero who meets a sweet girl Solveig at a wedding but instead abducts the bride Ingrid only to abandon her for the daughter of (the scandalized) Mountain King from whose realm our lothario only narrowly escapes. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote four books of Hungarian Dances, “arrangements” that most often were original compositions showing his lifelong love for traditional folk music. Their lively “Gypsy” sound was based on tavern song csárdás characterized by great variations in tempo, generally starting out slowly and building to a very fast finale. The lyrics and melodies of these three popular folk songs depict the humor and poignancy of life in 19th century Russia. “Oh, frost, frost/Don’t freeze me or my horse” laments winter’s onset. Korobeiniki (“Peddlers”) describes the haggling over the goods between a haberdashery peddler and a girl as a metaphor for courtship. Down the (St-)

Petersburg Road is a catch phrase (meaning “to do something in plain sight”) describing what happens on “easy street”—the main prosperous Moscow boulevard leading out to Russia’s second city. The painter (Mario) in love with singer Tosca sings one of opera’s most famous arias—from Tosca by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924)—while he awaits his execution: “The stars were shining,/The gate of the garden creaked./And a footstep grazed the sand./Fragrant, she entered/ And fell into my arms./Oh, sweet kisses and languorous caresses,/Forever, my dream of love has vanished./That moment has fled, and I die in desperation./And I never before loved life so much!” Béla Bartók (1881-1945) wrote Six Romanian Folk Dances, a suite of six short piano pieces (he later orchestrated) based on different musical modes from Transylvania, originally played on fiddle or shepherd’s flute: Stick Dance, Sash Dance, In One Spot, Bucsum Dance, Polka and Fast Dance. The Rastrelli Beatles Songbook features selections from the band’s early, middle and late periods (1960-1970) with songs from their Cavern/Hamburg days to their lyrical ballads on up to their final symphonic creations.
