EXPERIENCES TO SAVOR
T
his is the time of year that I really start longing for unlimited funds, no obligations and endless amounts of time at my disposal. It’s an occupational hazard when the travel issue comes around. Alas, being neither unfettered nor independently wealthy, I will have to find another way to contend with my wanderlust. But I do hope that all of our readers have some vacation time coming up, because this year’s selection of stories is going to make you want to go. Natural wonders, urban adventures, culture, history, mouthwatering cuisine . . . we’ve got it all this month, and it will provide plenty of fodder for your own globe-trotting dreams. Hearing the call of the wild? Chuck Graham’s paddleboarding excursion will have you longing for the redwoods, rivers and rugged coastline of Mendocino (Cover Story), where the forests are lush, the surf is unruly and the quaint towns that dot the bluffs make for delightful bases of operation. There’s plenty of outdoor adventure in Kaua‘i as well (Travel): All four corners of this verdant Hawaiian island offer enviable environments to explore. But when the kayaking, snorkeling and ziplining are through, you’ll want to see the Garden Isle’s softer side. Quirky but delicious dining options, cities where the art and music are as alluring as the beaches, sugar plantations, shopping Meccas . . . there truly is something for everyone on

Kaua‘i, where the living is easy . . . and the chickens are everywhere. On the more metropolitan side is Portland (About Town). This gem of the Pacific Northwest is mocked for being a hipster haven, but Portlandia aside, the city’s many fine qualities speak for themselves. Craft culture (beer and cocktails alike) owes much to Portland mixologists, and the culinary scene is off the charts. There are museums, bookstores, unique neighborhoods and over 10,000 acres of parkland to explore, too — many accessible by public transportation. This month we feature only one destination that actually requires a passport — and it is well worth the euros and a transatlantic flight. Less than 50 miles from Florence is the idyllic Renaissance town of Lucca (Culture), where every stone breathes with history, from its 2,000 year-old wall to a 12th century tower that has trees growing out of its top to a stunning array of churches. Here you’ll find plenty of culture and cuisine, but Lucca’s most attractive attribute might be its leisurely pace of life, where every moment is meant to be savored like a fine wine. It’s not exactly a voyage to a faraway land . . . but I hope you’ll find plenty to savor inside these pages as well. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

1 MONARCH MADNESS BIG ROCK NATURE PRESERVE
O
n Saturday, March 30, beneath sunny skies, the Ventura Land Trust hosted its Fourth Annual Monarch Madness pollinator planting party. This family-friendly public event took place at the Big Rock Nature Preserve along the Ventura River, where participants helped plant milkweed to attract monarch butterflies, as well as other native plants that provide crucial habitat for beneficial insects, birds and mammals. VLT volunteers gave demonstrations and offered instruction, and also provided gloves, shovels, plants and mulch. “Dug,” the organization’s shiny new tractor, was unveiled, and butterfly enthusiast Juliana Danaus spoke about the importance of protecting butterfly habitat. TRAVEL
the many faces of
KAUA‘I The Garden Isle is a one-of-a-kind destination with something for everyone. BY KATHY CHIN LEONG
C
hickens here. Chickens there. Chickens, chickens everywhere! During Hurricane Iniki in 1992, chicken coops in Kaua‘i spun into the air like Dorothy’s house in the Wizard of Oz. The freed fowl bred so much that feral chickens now strut through airports and shopping centers like they own the place. While a sore spot for locals, the feathered ambassadors are part of what makes Kaua‘i so distinctive, and also so alluring. Receiving over one million visitors annually, the Garden Isle enchants with bucket-list natural wonders, history and high-octane adventure. Simultaneously, Kaua‘i evokes a small town ease, bringing time to a standstill. No new building can be erected taller than the highest palm tree. With the exception of a Walmart and Costco, enterprises are comprised of mom-and-pop businesses. Some are quirky, such as The Right Slice, which sells whole fresh pies via vending machine at Harbor Mall. The watering hole for breakfast and lunch is the no-frills Tip Top Cafe, found inside the two-star Tip Top Motel. But at night, Tip Top hangs out a few lanterns to morph into Sushi Katsu Japanese Restaurant. Lodging abounds, from high-end resorts to budget condos. Book a room for less than $150 a night, or spread out in luxury at the Grand Hyatt Kauai, the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort or Kaua‘i Marriott Resort. Couples can renew vows at a bed and breakfast inn while multigenerational families congregate in a large rental home. A pantheon of activities await, many free. Hiking remains a chief pursuit for hoofers from beginners to advanced. The easy 5.1-mile Poipu Beach hike, on the south side of the island, leads visitors up a hill which reveals crystalline ocean vistas and pummeling waves. Westside, families can tackle trails at Waimea Canyon State Park, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. This free-of-charge treasure features gorges, canopy trees and postcard waterfalls. Scenic lookout points provide handicapped wheelchair access. On the northeastern side sits the Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, home to the Kīlauea Point Lighthouse. The white Laysan albatross nests on the cliffs as monk seals sunbathe below. A $10 entrance fee gets the curious inside the lighthouse for a docent tour. Adventure tours run the gamut on the island, for the lush landscape makes each outing incredibly inviting. Outfitters Kauai boasts a zipline extravaganza where participants leap off treehouse platforms to soar over rivers, waterfalls and rainforests. Or zip the FlyLine, the island’s longest zipline at over 0.75 miles long. The brave channel their inner Superman with arms outstretched as they lay tummy down in a harness. }}

Kaua‘i’s epic panorama of land and water leaves one breathless. For the journey of a lifetime, put aside fears and embark on a helicopter ride to take in aerial vistas. Experienced pilots at Island Helicopters offer the island’s only Jurassic Falls Landing Adventure. Visitors gently touch down in front of the same waterfall featured in the movie Jurassic Park. The pilot also lifts guests over a volcano crater, cliffs and turquoise shoreline. For those adverse to heights, kayaking yields calmer charms. Water lovers can rent their own vessel to ply along the Wailua River, on Kaua‘i’s east side. Kayak Kaua‘i serves up excursions such as the five-hour Wailua Sacred Falls tour with kayaking, hiking and swimming. One of the most unique activities is the inner tube float by Kauai Backcountry Adventures, which follows a historic ditch and tunnel system once used to irrigate the sugar cane crops of Lihue Plantation. Girded with helmets and headlamps, guests sit atop an inflatable inner tube and meander down the water-filled ditch through pitch-black caves. What to do when someone in the party shuns outdoor adventure? Sign up for the comfortable Roberts Hawaii Movie Tour. This bus ride takes visitors to spots where The Amazing Race, Fantasy Island, Gilligan’s Island and other shows were filmed. Movie clips shown inside the bus prepare passengers for each stop. For landscape-design lovers, try a trek to Allerton Garden. The 80-acre oasis features manmade pools, garden rooms, a swaying bamboo grove and manicured paths. The highlight is the sight of the giant Moreton Bay fig trees (also called the Australian banyan) filmed in Pirates of the Caribbean and Jurassic Park. Another unexpected treasure is the Kilohana Plantation, a former sugar cane estate. Built in 1935, it opened to the public in 1986 after production was shuttered. The place is a popular destination with a train ride that
encircles the property and a luau with cultural performances. Dine at the elegant indoor/outdoor Gaylord’s Restaurant, or indulge in a free rum tasting at Koloa Rum. Foodies should head to the farmers’ market at Kaua‘i Community College every Saturday from 9:30-1 p.m. It’s the perfect venue to “talk story” with growers and pig out on plate lunches, Hawaiian treats and produce. Try the Sugarloaf pineapple, a white variety which takes longer to grow and tastes sweeter and less acidic than its yellow counterpart. Eastside, Kapa‘a represents a shopper’s paradise with plant shops, art galleries, coffee haunts and clothing boutiques. Don’t miss Wailua Shave Ice, co-owned by Brandon Baptiste, an up-and-coming chef who wanted to come back to his island roots. Sold out of a food truck, the snow cone-like treat is made with local juice with no dyes or preservatives, and topped off with a fluffy coconut whip. While in Kapa‘a, active travelers should take advantage of the eight-mile bike trail that runs along the ocean. Simply known as the Kapa‘a Path, it is one of the area’s best kept secrets that will take about one hour to bike and two hours to walk. Meanwhile, Hanapepe, known as the island’s art town, features its own gallery walk every Friday night, rain or shine. Come before the sun goes down and take advantage of the indigenous food offerings from the local restaurants and food trucks lining the main artery. Lit galleries pride themselves on the quality of Hawaiian art found in the sculpture, paintings, tilework, pottery and photography. Indeed, Kaua‘i is the isle of choice for the adventure junkie, the foodie, the shopping maven and everyone in between. It’s no wonder those chickens never really wanted to fly beyond the island coop. They were in paradise all along. v
PARADISE FOUND: No matter what kind of vacation you want, Kaua‘i delivers. Chill out in an oceanview cabana (top) at the Kauai Marriott Resort in Lihue, where golden sands beckon and beautiful Kalapaki Bay enchants. PORTLAND Consuming cuisine and culture in the Pacific Northwest metropolis.
I
BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK
could not have conjured a more stunning descent into Portland: a blazing orange sunset and inky mountain silhouette (of snowcapped Mt. Hood) on one side of the plane, the Willamette River winding below on the other. Portland not only boasts a plethora of cultural attractions and James Beard Award winners and nominees, but the famous chef/cookbook author was a Portland native. I was here to expand my mind and (possibly) my waistline.
LET THE EATING BEGIN My first night I checked into the charming Woodlark Hotel, a trendy modern spot cleverly housed in two historic buildings. I popped into Bullard Restaurant (on site) for a late-night bite at the bar; the bartender smartly suggested a great butter lettuce, watercress and fennel salad. I sipped what turned out to be my favorite glass of wine during my visit: Goodfellow Family Cellars “Clover” Reserve Pinot Gris. I chatted with other travelers and checked out Abigail Hall, a happening, super-atmospheric bar also within the hotel.
FROM FRIED DONUTS TO FRIED CHICKEN The next morning I popped over to Blue Star Donuts before the obligatory visit to the ginormous bookstore, Powell’s. A very nice person gave me a little piece of yellow paper with directions to the floors and rows to find what I was looking for — a necessity for this aptly named “City of Books.” I spent the rest of my morning perfectly content roaming the fine }}

MAY 2019
Portland Art Museum, with its excellent contemporary and Northwest Coast art collections. Lunch at Bistro Agnes was lovely, but I wish I’d dined at the new and popular Maurice, a charming “pastry luncheonette” spot where the chef/owner works in full view. Happy hour over a perfect margarita with Cultural Manager Donovan Edwards, who is curating cool events at the hipster, youth-oriented Hoxton Hotel, was enlightening and fun.
AN UNEXPECTED LUNCH, PLUS OX I had befriended my PDX airport Uber driver, Raman, who invited me to lunch. He drove me to a nondescript shopping center about 30 minutes from downtown. There we dined at the Portland Seafood Company, a restaurant originally founded by Portland legend Bob Farrell of Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlours fame. Raman had been pals with Farrell, as had our waitress. I ordered the very fresh and tasty pear, pecan and blue cheese salad with grilled Columbia River steelhead. “It hits all the notes,” said the waitress, who’d worked for the company for 25 years. “Sweet, salty, piquant, crunchy.” Indeed it did, and I was happily surprised. I explored Mississippi Avenue and a great chocolate and salt shop, The Meadow, before getting semi-lost on a very long walk to my final meal of the day: an early bite at the bar at the highly regarded Ox, where I chowed down on a tasty mushroom, spinach, foie gras mélange followed by halibut collar in a tangy Asian sauce. Bartender Andrew provided good banter.
WELL-KNOWN FAVORITES DON’T DISAPPOINT Breakfast was a quick bite at Mother’s and more walking. I moved to The Heathman, a historic hotel in the heart of downtown. I crossed the river (again) to meet an old friend, Portland architect Bob Schatz, for a dynamite lunch at the popular and well loved Thai/Vietnamese street fare spot Pok Pok (the original one on the east side of the river). Pok Pok was definitely a favorite for the amazing array of Asian flavors and fresh herbs in the dishes we enjoyed. For an early dinner at Nostrana, the Italian place everyone loves, I took the recommendation of a stand-up comedy couple I shared an Uber ride with and ordered the radicchio Caesar salad (awesome) and gobbled up the ridiculously delicious bread along with a simple thin-crust pizza with house made moz-
zarella . . . served uncut with scissors.
LAN SU: A FAVORITE RESPITE The following morning I took a delightful stroll through verdant squares flanked by old churches and museums to the terrific Farmers Market at Portland State University, where wild mushrooms, tasty baked goods, heritage popcorn, homemade jams, bright yellow daffodils and more delighted the senses. Later that morning, in the old Chinatown section of Portland, I encountered Portland’s homeless just a stone’s throw from the riverfront, Voodoo Donuts and the Portland Saturday Market. I’d come to tour the sublime Lan Su Chinese Garden. The contrast to the nitty-gritty street scene actually enhanced what was one of my favorite experiences. I loved the oasis of calm in the walled complex with its lovely and perfectly named two-story tearoom, the Tower of Cosmic Reflections. On the upper level, amidst Chinese fashion and furniture and overlooking the garden pond, I enjoyed a transportive lunch of dumplings, noodles, almond cookies and tea with a friend in town for a writers’ convention. The Portland Saturday Market has been going on for more than 20 years, and is popular with tourists and locals alike. I grabbed a sinful pork/fried cheese sandwich from Pollo Bravo at Portland’s first food court, Pine Street Market, and rode the trolley back to the Heathman.
NATURAL WONDERS IN WASHINGTON PARK On my last day, I needed nature. I took a hike through the Hoyt Arboretum in Washington Park to the Portland Japanese Garden where I enjoyed lunch in the Umami Café. The limited menu offers interesting teas (all explained), unique Japanese sweets and simple, small rice bowls. From there I walked to the International Rose Test Garden, then rode the free shuttle up to the Visitor Center and hiked the Magnolia Trail where the trees were in blossom. Last year, Portland was rated one of the best thriving cities for young entrepreneurs. The city’s housing affordability is also a factor. You know you really like a place when you get home and look up rentals online and start fantasizing about a cool little pied-à-terre in downtown Portland (about $150,000). But then reality sinks in: There’s the rain and gray weather, which might, for some Californians, make Portland a better vacation spot than permanent way station. Either way, remember to pack an umbrella. v

LIVING LA LUCCA VITA
Opening up to the many splendors of Tuscany’s walled Renaissance city. STORY AND PHOTOS BY MIKE NELSON
LA DOLCE VITA: Serene Levanto, a few minutes’ train ride north of busy Cinque Terre, is an ideal place for doing as little as possible. Photo by Janis Nelson
C
ity walls, as any current or former resident of Berlin will tell you, do not connote hospitality. So why would a city surrounded by a wall be an ideal locale to start your Italian vacation? Because the 2,000-year-old wall surrounding the Tuscan city of Lucca (less than an hour from Florence to the east and the Italian Riviera to the northwest) is among the least imposing and most inviting edifices you’ll find anywhere in the world. Only 2.5 miles in circumference, it is adorned not by “Keep Out” signs, but by trees and a wide walkway ideal for strolling or bicycling, where you can work off your second (or was it your third?) gelato and marvel yet again at the wonders of a lifestyle that proclaims, “Relax and enjoy!” Best of all, Lucca is filled with people who smile, welcome and aim to please visitors to their city that has survived a 14th century takeover by Pisa and a 19th century invasion by Napoleon. Today, the only invaders are tourists who bring curiosity, appetites, euros and, especially, the desire to enjoy la dolce vita away from Italy’s more famous (and more crowded) tourist spots. The walls themselves — fortified during the Renaissance, but still utilizing some of the original brick and rocks — are worth exploring above and below, where a vast network of caves and tunnels once housed soldiers and horses preparing to battle would-be conquerors. Today there are retirees, not conquerors, from France, Germany and Great Britain sprinkled among Lucca’s 88,000 citizens, most of whom populate the “newer” portion of the city outside the walls and above the ground. }} MAY 2019

But it is the old city within the walls that attracts and delights visitors with its rich history, quirky architecture, unorthodox but easily negotiable street layout, excellent dining and, along and near Via Fillungo, better-than-you-might-expect retail opportunities for the fashion-conscious, especially those seeking items designed by local artists. Lucca’s reputation as a fashion center may not rival Milan’s three hours to the north, but neither do its price tags. An array of centuries-old churches offers both shade from the summer heat and artistic wonders, like the Romanesque San Frediano and its Byzantine mosaics, and San Michele topped by a winged Archangel Michael. The presence of instrument-toting youth from around the world attests to Lucca’s reputation as an internationally acclaimed center for music instruction. The home of Lucca’s musical giant, composer Giacomo Puccini, is open for tours, and his legacy is celebrated nightly from April through October with concerts at the nearby Church of San Giovanni. That leaves more than enough time afterwards to enjoy supper in il primo della serata, the shank of the evening, which in Italy lasts from 7 p.m. until midnight. Dining is the highlight of the day for most Italians. So embrace it like an Italian, whether you dine simply, at a cafe facing Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, or sumptuously, at local favorite Ristorante Giglio near San Giovanni. Start with a glass of chianti or maybe a bright orange spritz (Prosecco, Aperol and soda water with an orange slice), and end with a tiramisu. Or stop at one of many gelaterias for a cup or cone of the cool, delectable and supremely addictive dessert treat, made from milk and fresh ingredients — less sweet, more creamy and so much better than ice cream. And then join the locals for a passeggiata, or leisurely evening walk, through this marvelous old city, where the only thing walls keep out is traffic.
BEYOND LUCCA There is also plenty to do and see away from Lucca, including Florence, Tuscany’s capital 50 miles east; Siena, 90 miles south; and other, often less well-known places which, like Lucca, have much to offer. A sampling: Pisa: Lucca’s old rival is just 12 miles south, 25 minutes by car or by train (which leaves every 30 minutes). The Leaning Tower is a must-see for most, but you can’t (and shouldn’t) ignore the Baptistery of St. John a few steps away. One might also enjoy the traces of rivalry still present in the (mostly) good-natured comments each city’s people make about the other. (Luccan parents reportedly scare their children by saying, “Hurry, the Pisans are coming.”) Pistoia: Located 28 miles southeast from Lucca, 40 minutes by car or train, this rather off-the-radar town of 90,000 offers an offthe-radar treasure: the Altar of St. James the Apostle, the oldest silver altarpiece in Italy and among the largest anywhere, located in the 1,000-year-old Cathedral of St. Zeno. Begun in 1287 and featuring some work by the great Renaissance architect Filippo Brunelleschi, this masterpiece of embossed silver sheet serves (in the best
Renaissance sense) as a Scripture storybook for the masses. Porto Venere: Just south of the increasingly-popular Cinque Terre and 56 miles from Lucca is this charming seaside community with an inviting marina, an enticing seaside restaurant in Le Bocche and, a short walk away, the cliffside Church of San Pietro, perched on the rocky shoreline since the 13th century. Porto Venere is also a short bus, ferry or taxi ride from train-accessible La Spezia 10 miles up the coast. Levanto and Bonassola: Just north of the Cinque Terre is Levanto, a serenely quiet beachside town on the Ligurian coast, 63 miles from Lucca (75 minutes by car or 2 hours by train). If you’re seeking a second home-base, the Hotel Primavera, a five-minute walk from the beach, features one of Italy’s best breakfasts (included). Just north of Levanto and accessible by foot, bicycle or train is even smaller and quieter Bonassola with splendid restaurants like Caffe delle Rose and the delightful opportunity to do as little as possible. Cinque Terre: Yes, it’s becoming more crowded in the daytime — almost to the point of suffocation. And yet, how do you not spend at least some time exploring one or more of these five villages that sprout like vineyards from the rocky cliffs and beaches, graced by pastel-walled homes, inns and seafood restaurants, and connected by a hillside footpath (for which you pay a nominal national park maintenance fee)? Take the train from Lucca to La Spezia (2 hours) and connect to the Cinque Terre train, pick a village, hop off and spend a couple hours just wandering. Then get back on the train and repeat as many times as you like. If staying in Levanto, the train to Cinque Terre runs all day, making it easy to visit any or all of the villages. You can also take a ferry from a northern or southern start/end port, which takes longer and costs more (around $40 from Porto Venere to Levanto) but presents a beautiful view of the villages. Florence American Cemetery: On June 5, 1944 (one day before a much more famous moment in World War II took place 1,000 miles to the north) the Liberation of Rome was celebrated by Allied Forces and a grateful Roman citizenry. Seventy-five years later, in a peaceful countryside 12 miles south of Florence, this well-manicured and emotionally powerful site marks the final resting place for 4,400 American soldiers who died during the Italian campaign. Less than an hour by car (or 2.5 hours by bus) from Lucca, the cemetery is an appropriate place to offer gratitude for the sacrifices made by so many for all of us.
LA LUCCA VITA
To enjoy Lucca (and all of Italy, for that matter) to the fullest, it helps to pack, along with your passport, sunscreen and euros, a commitment to not rushing through the experience. Part of enjoying Italy is appreciating its natural beauty, especially the human variety, and the more leisurely pace of life. Allow yourself to slow down, indulge in lengthy mealtimes and savor the atmosphere and warm, friendly people as well as the food. Be sure to always say per favore and grazie. But most of all, let your own interior walls crumble, and la dolce vita will become più dolce — even sweeter. v
CULTURE CACHE: As in all of Tuscany, history abounds in and near Lucca. The city is surrounded by a 2,000-year-old wall (top) that today is used for strolling and cycling. The Florence American Cemetery (center), about an hour away in Impruneta, is the resting place for 4,400 American soldiers who participated in the Italian campaign during World War II. Luccan villas with expansive gardens (bottom) are a rare but captivating sight.

TRAVEL NOTES The old town of Lucca (within the walls) has four entrances. The major train station serving the old city is just south of the Porta San Pietro (southern) entrance. Via Fillungo, the main pedestrian thoroughfare, runs roughly northsouth, from the Porta Santa Maria (northern) entrance. Several bike rental shops are located near the northern and southern entrances. Money: The exchange rate fluctuates daily, but has favored American travelers in recent years. It is advisable to purchase euros before arriving in Europe. Trains: Reservations are often required when traveling between major cities, but generally not for regional trains. Two train services to consider are Trenitalia (www.trenitalia.com) and Italo (www.italotreno.it).

A
ON THE ROCKS: With knobby sea stacks, rugged stone archways and numerous sea caves, the majestic Mendocino coastline seems custom-made for standup paddling.
From the river to the sea by paddleboard in watery, wonderful Mendocino. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHUCK GRAHAM
dense ceiling of dewy overcast hovered above a towering redwood forest canopy, the steady flow of Big River ambling beneath me toward the icy Pacific of Northern California. My carbon fiber paddle gently sliced through the glassy river, the only breach in silence as I followed the flight of a foraging osprey. I could feel the tug of an outgoing tide pulling me out of the coastal range leaving the iconic redwoods in my wake and eventually along the ruggedly breathtaking Mendocino Headlands. About 3 hours north of San Francisco, the quiet coastal town of Mendocino is the great escape from city life where time slows down to a crawl. Like veins running down a forearm, flat-water rivers gently run serpentine-like, flowing out to gaping river mouths where graveyards of bleached driftwood clutter pearly white beaches. Mendocino County was one of the original counties of California at the time of statehood in 1850. Following the wreck of the Frolic during that same year, Harry Meiggs, a San Francisco lumber dealer, sent a resourceful Jerome Ford on a salvage mission. Instead of finding Chinese ginger jars, bolts of silk, camphor, lacquered trunks and various housewares, Ford discovered thick groves }}

of redwood and Douglas fir trees in the region. A year later, Meiggs erected a sawmill at Big River. This led to the founding of Mendocino and the beginning of the lumber industry in Northern California. Due to an initially low population in Mendocino, however, the coastal town did not have a separate government until 1859. State Route 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, winds along the Mendocino coastline, hugging the edge of sheer, wave-battered bluffs, crossing several rivers shaded by redwood forests. The best and easiest place to launch a standup paddleboard is located at Van Damme State Beach. Really though, it’s almost as if Mendocino was made for standup paddling. Paddle beneath quaint Pacific coastal villages atop rugged cliffs where knobby sea stacks endure relentless crashing waves. The Mordor-like archways are too many to count and fun to paddle through depending on the surf, which can be unruly at times. Much of the coast is honeycombed with toothy sea grottos in various configurations. Many of those sea caves are throughcaves and dependent on the tides for access, but there are many deep coves protected from the elements which make for easy entry points before venturing through rock gardens and surging channels. Nearly 10 percent of the county consists of water and 10 rivers flow one way or another through Mendocino. Eight of those reach the ocean and all are on flat water. Standup paddlers can experience the best of both worlds in Mendocino, leaving the craggy coastline and paddle for the serenity of redwood-choked runnels. Black bears, ospreys, hummingbirds, river otters and mule deer are readily seen along the banks of the Albion, Navarro, and Big rivers. One of the more interesting paddles begins on the Albion heading upriver toward several floating cabins. Playful river otters post up on weathered docks and slalom between rows of 160-year-old posts still standing in the chilly water. The docks were once used to collect lumber floating down river during that industry’s heyday. Another, more challenging paddle involves leaving the town of Mendocino heading north on an 8-mile round-trip excursion up to the Point Cabrillo Light Station, built in 1909. Weave between giant sea stacks over crystal-clear water while ducking in and out of tranquil coves and dank sea caves. The light station is prominent, standing by itself on a flat marine terrace overlooking the burly headlands. On a clear day its flashing light can be seen more than 15 miles away. v

TRAVEL NOTES Alegria Inn 44781 Main St. 707.937.5150 www.oceanfrontmagic.com This is a fantastic place to stay and enjoy the Mendocino Coast. Located on the Mendocino Headlands, this cozy ocean front B&B has wood burning stoves inside cottages that blend into the rugged Northern California landscape. It also has a trail from the property which descends to the broad, sandy beach and river mouth of Big River, and is easy walking distance into town. Moody’s Organic Coffee Bar 10450 Lansing Street 707.937.4843 www.moodyscoffeebar.com When the ocean and rivers are a cool 49 degrees, it’s nice to know there’s a cup of hot chocolate, coffee or tea just up the trail. An adjoining art gallery and Internet café are also inside. A great place to hang out (and thaw out) in the cozy confines of Mendocino. Standup Paddle Mendocino Van Damme Beach State Park State Highway 1, Little River 707.813.7117 www.standuppaddlemendocino.com Lessons and tours are held at Van Damme State Beach, just off Highway 1, in a deep, tranquil cove paddling along one of California’s most scenic coastlines. In close proximity to the launch site are many sea caves, narrow channels and rock gardens occupied by curious harbor seals, whistling pigeon guillemots, soaring ospreys and football-sized common murres. And if standup paddling isn’t your gig, they also offer excellent kayak tours from the same convenient beach. Frankie’s Pizza and Ice Cream Parlor 44591 Ukiah Street 707.937.2436 www.frankiesmendocino.com Frankie’s in the village of Mendocino is the ideal place to pick up a quick nosh or savor a tasty meal following a paddle. It is family owned and run, serving pizza, falafel and locally made ice cream as well as other items. Also on the menu are espresso drinks, tea, beer or wine. Frankie’s uses organic, sustainable, locally grown products, and offers live music weekly.
SURF AND TURF: Viewed from clifftops or driftwood-littered beaches, the Mendocino Headlands (top) are a breathtaking sight. Alegria Inn (center) is a charming oceanfront bed and breakfast within walking distance of both beach and town. HONESTY! INTEGRITY! COMMITMENT! RESULTS! H H H H H I worked with Blake the first time in 2000 and was very impressed. In 2015 when we were thinking of selling our house I knew Blake was the realtor I would be calling on again. His knowledge, expertise, professionalism, dedication and integrity put him in a league all his own. His whole team are top notch. He helped us sell our property within days of it hitting the market and we found a replacement very shortly after. H H H H H Blake has been our broker for all 3 homes we have purchased and will be our broker if we ever need a broker again. Buying a home was made easy with the guidance of Blake. H H H H H When we were interviewing realtors, Blake impressed us not only with his area knowledge, but with the patience in explaining the home buying process and the verbal skills to do so clearly and succinctly. As a first time home purchaser this empathy was the key differentiator that led to our decision to go with Blake, even over a neighbor realtor who really wanted our business. Our initial impression proved correct, Blake’s level of caring and focus on finding the right home for my family was consistent (it could not have been easy -- we had three very different opinions on what that house would be). But we always felt like Blake was a vested partner in our search.
H H H H H Blake Mashburn made the selling of my rental property as easy as possible. Blake took the time to understand what I wanted, he took care of many extra details to get the property sold including arranging to have the property cleaned, being present during inspections, overseeing necessary repairs including finding qualified people and supervising their work. Blake went over and above in helping me and he was kind and compassionate to my situation. Additionally, Blake was always transparent regarding all details yet provided me with advice when I asked for it. Above all, Blake cared about getting the job done right. Blake is an expert in his field and a professional in every way. H H H H H I bought my first home through Blake in 2002 and have worked with him ever since. I’ve always been extremely satisfied with his level of service and diligence. I don’t plan on working with anyone else. In his office, Lori is exceptional in handling all of the little details and taking care of everything for us. Blake is honest, thorough, attentive, and professional. I’ve recommended him to all of my friends and family and remain confident that he will do terrific work. H H H H H We were so happy that Blake was referred to us from my college bestie who is an agent in Oceanside, Ca. Clearly he had a reputation as a knowledgeable, professional agent. Not being familiar with the nuances of different neighborhoods, Blake was just who we needed. 45 days from our first visit - SUCCESS! A great property was ours! Most importantly, Blake and Lori are team players, working seamlessly with everyone on Team Pat/Brent! We could not be happier with our experience and refer Blake highly.
H H H H H Blake is always very professional at every approach he encounters, communicates and responds to all of our questions and concerns promptly and very well at every stage of the process and between all parties. We value him our professional realtor and a friend. I am very happy that we found Blake to assist my family and me in meeting all of our criteria in our new happy home. :) I would recommend anyone to use Blake and his team, Lori for your real estate expert services.
H H H H H I just completed a purchase with Blake’s help! I was a first-time homebuyer trying to jump into the big, daunting world of Ventura homeownership, and Blake made the entire process easy and comfortable from the start. He comes across as genuine and kind, he’s easygoing, and he seems to be MADE for this kind of work! He listened and really paid attention to my description of the type of home I was looking for, and he made it happen. Thank you, Blake!!
H H H H H Home buying can become such a daunting task, and more so for first time home buyers. Yet from the moment we met with Blake, we were at ease. Blake listened to our home buying needs and made the home search process an enjoyable one. Within a few days, we found our dream home. From the first home viewing and all through escrow, Blake and his team were readily available to answer our questions. Blake and his team keep their clients best interest in the forefront. We highly recommend Blake Mashburn and his outgoing, courteous, and professional team for your home buying or selling needs. H H H H H I have used Blake twice to purchase a home. Blake is curtious, patient, knowledgeable and looked after my interest. Blake will get things done for you and make the sale and purchase of your home go as smoothly as possible. Blakes assistant, Lori, is awesome. Thanks Blake.......again.
H H H H H Highly recommend Blake Mashburn as a realtor to work with. He is professional, helpful, and keeps you up-to-date throughout the whole sale and escrow process. He has a good sense of humor which can come in handy when problems arise. His sense of humor can alleviate your anxiety as it projects a certainty that problems will be solved. With Blake and Lori on the job, you needn’t worry. They’ll guide you through a very smooth transaction. I’m glad I dealt with this team of experts. H H H H H This is our second time working with Blake and we can’t imagine doing this without him. Blake looked after our interest. He’s caring, understanding and after working with my husband (twice), very patient. Blake knows his business and that’s why he’s the best.
