editor’s note

ADVENTURE BY DESIGN

I

n a South American town called “Little Hell” I folded my truck around a wooden post. Trash spilled from its dog-proof perch into the new geography of my hood, unfamiliar hills and valleys shrouded in radiator steam, and my passenger cackled ruefully. I’ve since learned not to go out seeking adventure—the spoken goal of that hapless midnight drive. Or to heed the suggestion of a grown man with tube socks tattooed up his legs. Peter Pan once said to Captain Hook, “To die would be an awfully big adventure.” And he was right. That’s my point. Great travel partner, though, my tattooed provocateur of a friend: an instigator, to be sure, always down for an adventure of some sort. And though I’ve officially given up on eternal youth and learned to avoid chasing “adventure,” per se, I’m still not above an occasional nip from the jackass trough. Yes, I still crave adventure—even as I avoid it. So when I look at that glistening pod on our cover it sparks something internal. It’s nothing new, of course, this timeless urge. Kerouac’s “On the Road” fantasy has called to men since the advent of the wheel. Steinbeck embarked on his own “Travels With Charley” late in his life. And Tom and Huck’s 19th-century creekside musings still sing to us from the pages of Kindle. The resurgence of these riveted travel trailers, however, has perhaps more to do with design than our urge to hit the open road in search of adventure. They are undeniably cool looking. Real head-turners. And now there’s one with an interior to match that classic style. On page 19, Maryann Hammers chats with the designer of the Bowlus Road Chief, John Long, a connoisseur who spent a

6

decade restoring his own 1935 Road Chief before securing the rights to the brand and launching a contemporary version of the original, which predated and inspired competitors like the now-ubiquitous Airstream. Beginning this summer, the luxe new travel trailers will be made right here in Oxnard, with a sticker price of a cool hundred grand. Now, I don’t expect many of our readers to go out and buy one of these. But anyone with a good sense of design will appreciate the genius behind them. As an article in the New York Times put it, “The Bowlus Road Chief makes an Airstream look about as design-forward as a dogcart.” Retro? The originator, William Hawley Bowlus, actually spent his career on the cutting edge, designing planes like Lindbergh’s famous Spirit of St. Louis. Indeed, his fascination with aircraft construction inspired the first Road Chief, produced in 1934. This odd contraption reflected the futuristic style and “space-age” technology of his era. He was anything but a throwback. Fads come and go; great design is eternal. And I believe this trailer owes its longevity to forward-thinking design rather than the obvious retro-cool appeal. Or who knows, maybe Maryann is right: perhaps a “craving for new adventures” is the big draw—the fuel of our attraction to these “sleek silver tubes.” But people please, can we call it something else? Let’s leave intentional adventure to the jackasses. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

Dump your Bucket (List) ANDREA KITAY curates the cliché out of travel.

B

ucket list got you down? If that dearly held compilation of the top things you want to do in your lifetime is starting to read like something your eighth-grade history teacher wrote, you aren’t alone. What began as a curious concept several years ago, bucket lists seem to have morphed into an exercise in the banal. Whitewashed like the media’s spin on a celebrity’s midnight behavior, today’s lists reward the splashy while failing to consider the real goal: authenticity. Take, for example, the bucket list of an old friend who grumbled to me about it “not feeling right.” Sure enough, her first three to-dos included visiting Mexico’s pyramids, taking a trip to Hana on the Hawaiian island of Maui, and strolling the Great Wall of China. I rest my case. This isn’t her list; it’s Everyman’s list, doomed to fail in even a cursory test of personal meaningfulness. So what to do? Curate it, of course. Add levity. Consider campy. Think daft and ditch the dull. Throw in a dose of adversity, even, which by definition provides the possibility of personal growth. But by all means, eliminate the cliché. My own bucket list is in constant transition, but laughter—preferably uncon-

12 | ventana | May 2013

trolled and shared with someone near and dear—is an unwavering theme. As a result, it’s filled with absurd and, yes, socially worthless activities. Here, a trio of my top picks, one of which I recently checked off that everevolving list.

Dirty Dutch If you didn’t get the opportunity to sling enough mud in your youth, this is your chance. Mud walking, or wadlopen, in Dutch, is a venerable past time in the Waddensea, the shallows stretching between the mainland and the Frisian Islands on Holland’s north coast where twice a day, at low tide, both sand and mudflats are exposed. This makes the area ripe for tromping around, and those inventive Dutch have parlayed it into a wet, sloppy day trip. Forget that that this is basically idiotic, an exercise in futility, as at every step you drag your way through thick mud just for the pleasure of doing it again. Instead, think of it as pure genius, kid-style. But do keep your expectations in check. Outfitters may bill wadlopen as an ecotour-style adventure, using phrases like “intertidal guided tour” and “wildlife walk,” but

opposite: Low tide on Holland’s north coast exposes a muddy wonderland for the intrepid traveler. RIGHT: Truth is, you’re never too old to play in the mud. TOP RIGHT: They may have lost traction on the catwalks of Paris, but high-top shoes are all the rage in Holland.

don’t be fooled. Sure, you may see a few crabs or the occasional sea bird. But the truth is, you’ll spend the day mucking about in sand and mud with no goal greater than perhaps reaching some distant island. And then comes the moment when any sane traveler questions just why he decided to do this in the first place. Fait accompli! If that realization doesn’t make you roll with laughter, grab a fistful of mud and pitch it at whoever’s closest to you.

ABOVE: Modern zorbs have harnesses and myriad safety features, none of which help you forget you’re a human in a hamster ball.

Hamster Style Ever seen one of those round, hamster-sized balls that

right: There’s no better way to see the spectacular scenery of New Zealand from all angles.

give critters a chance to enjoy cage-free exercise without becoming the family feline’s snack? Supersize that. Now add water, a human, and a shallow slope, and you have zorbing. The first zorbs were created by a couple of wacky New Zealanders, Dwane van der Sluis and Andrew Akers. Akers has since joined forces with his brother David and their business partner, Chris Roberts, to retool—and rename—that simple inflatable ball. Now called Outdoor Gravity Orbs, or OGOs (theogo.com), the balls come equipped with harnesses and can be ridden alone (IGO) or with a friend (WEGO). Then there’s the water-oriented H2OGO, which has a dual hull with six-foot inner sphere. In its New Zealand home of Rotorua, the H2OGO follows an 820-foot course downhill in a slippery, splashing environment. Riders say it feels like being in a gently moving waterfall. What’s not to love? The original-style ride, complete with newer harness concept, is more of a commitment to physics—think the whirling teacups of Disneyland. As the ball rolls 655 feet down a shallow incline, you move like the Mad Hatter surveying the world from a hamster’s-eye view. Makes flying halfway across the world to stare at the Taj Mahal’s four equal sides seem hardly worth the effort.

Chinese artisans are flown in to carve whimsical sculptures at Kirkenes Snowhotel in Norway, where the vodka is always chilled and glasses are made of ice.

16 | ventana | May 2013

On the Rocks If you think a stay at a hotel where the temperature hovers below freezing wouldn’t make a traveler’s bucket list, consider my experience. At the tail end of a recent trip to Finnmark County, Norway, I spent a night in the 24-room Kirkenes Snowhotel (kirkenessnowhotel.com), just a few miles from the Russian border. This wasn’t your typical bricks and mortar construction—not even a traditional Sami lavuu tent—it was made of snow, the walls festooned with handcarved trolls and lobby chairs chipped from blocks of ice by Chinese artisans flown in for a two-week power-carving job. As you’d find at most good Norwegian hotels, the focal point of the lobby was a bar—this one a bulletproof number made of ice. Here, a svelte bartender in a black beanie served up crowberry glogg shots to guests sporting ski masks, or balaclavas, reindeer-leather gloves, and heavy down parkas. In this oversized igloo-inspired structure illuminated by pink, purple, and blue LED lights, guests were handed down-filled mummy bags rated to negative 31 and cheerfully reminded that their bedding was also a “survival suit.” Thankfully, the room temperature stayed around 25 degrees, warmer than outside. Still, I opted for a balaclava and a woolen hat with earflaps and pom-poms. My bed’s headboard and footboard were carved in ice, but the mattresses were real. This little adventure smacks of survival and wackiness all in one. I still get a kick remembering the German couple who surprised everyone when they emerged from the sauna, glowing red from the heat, and bolted buck-naked into the powdery Norwegian snow. I was later informed it’s a snow hotel challenge of sorts, news to me. It was a hilarious end to a perfect night’s sleep, and one that still gives me a giggle. v

On the road. Again. Coming to Oxnard: a contemporary take on the classic American travel trailer. MARYANN HAMMERS and designer John Long talk shop. Photos COURTESY OF bowlus road chief

T

here’s something about aluminum trailers. Whether parked by a windswept beach or rolling down a lonely highway, the sleek silver tubes evoke a unique set of emotions: a yearning for the open road, nostalgia for a simpler time, craving for new adventures, and freedom from our workaday lives. John Long understands. The Canadian tech entrepreneur and vintage auto collector bought a rare 1935 Bowlus travel trailer and spent a decade meticulously restoring it. As he rode it cross-country with his family, he was shocked at how many people shared his zeal (one admiring stranger followed Long on the highway for two hours, waiting for him to pull into a rest stop,

so he could get a better look). Realizing that his personal passion might be a pretty cool business, Long secured the rights to the Bowlus brand, originally founded by Hawley Bowlus (builder of the Spirit of St. Louis, Charles Lindbergh’s plane). The orders started rolling in, fast and furious. Long’s newly resurrected Bowlus Road Chief reflects the riveted retro aluminum travel trailer of the 1930s, but with modern technology and luxuries. To see one is to want one. Long and his wife/business partner Helena Mitchell expect the company’s new Oxnard headquarters to be fully up and running this summer. Here’s what they told us: 88

May 2013 | ventana | 19

What made you decide to relocate from Toronto to Oxnard? Long: Ventura County is beautiful. Also, the original Bowlus was built in San Fernando, so it has a Southern California heritage. Plus there are a lot of aircraft manufacturing businesses in Southern California, and the Bowlus is riveted the same way as a Boeing. So we thought we would be able to find good skilled labor. Mitchell: We believe that Southern California will be a good market for us. We expect a lot of sales from the area. How is the new Bowlus Road Chief different from the Airstreams we see around? Long: The Bowlus is the original riveted aluminum trailer that all the others came from, so you have the incredible heritage. But in addition to that, three things make Bowlus unique: One, it’s ultra-lightweight. It weighs just 2,000 pounds. You don’t need a big truck to pull it. Two, it’s the most aerodynamic trailer ever made. Because of its shape, there’s much less drag, less wind buffeting. Gas consumption is greatly reduced. And three, it’s convenient. We wanted to build a trailer that people can easily take out just for the day. It parks in a standard-sized garage; it’s easy to hitch up to your car. You can park it all sorts of places — I like to park between trees. 20 | ventana | May 2013

What is it like inside? Long: It’s 20 feet long inside. In back, there’s a private stateroom—with a door—with twin beds that convert to a king. There’s a three-by-fivefoot washroom. The living room includes a couch, two chairs, and table. I like sitting back on the couch reading a book, surrounded by windows, with my feet up. It has a heated floor—I get cold feet, so that’s really nice. There’s also a charging station for laptops, cell phones, and iPads. And the galley has a stove and refrigerator. Mitchell: The galley, with the high-end Italian cooktop, is my favorite feature. The fridge is big enough, and I love that I can prepare a really fabulous meal on the cook’s kitchen. I understand you’re a tech guy. How did you end up in the trailer biz? Long: I owned an Internet company, and I retired from that. I’m a vintage car collector, so as one of my retirement projects, I wanted to restore a vintage trailer. I bought a 1935 Bowlus Road Chief, which I restored to its original condition over ten years. Just 80 Bowlus trailers were ever built—in 1934, 1945, and 1936—and about half of them still exist. That started my fascination with Bowlus trailers. I wrote a book on the subject—“Bowlus Trailer, Origin of the Species”— and took the trailer across the country four times.

ABOVE: The aircraft grade aluminum skin is riveted and bonded for strength. A rounded front leads to a tapering tail that directs air around the Road Chief without creating drag. CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT: The Houzer sink features a designer faucet that extends far enough to rinse sandy feet outside. The trailer is equipped with cellular or Wi-Fi routers, and a built-in inverter allows techies to plug in even when there’s no outside power connection. The SMEG Italian cooktop boasts a folding glass top that extends counter space. Designer John Long with his wife, Helena Mitchell.

May 2013 | ventana | 21

Tell us about the restoration of your 1935 Bowlus. Long: The exterior was intact. But someone had added unoriginal windows, so I had to bring back the original curved windows. The interior wood walls and seats were not in good shape, so I had to replace all the wood. Everything that I restored is true to the era—even the sconces on the wall were exactly reproduced. But I also added hidden modern features. For example, I installed a toilet and refrigerator. The old trailers had ice boxes, but it’s hard to find 25-pound blocks of ice today. Mitchell: But you need to know that he did consider putting in an ice box. John’s passion is on the edge of crazy. And you loved your Bowlus so much that you decided to keep on building them? Long: I was taken aback at the response from the public. During Modernism Week in Palm Springs, 3,0000 people came through our trailer. Then my son, who is 6’3”, mentioned, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a trailer that I could fit into?” The original Bowlus is not tall enough for him. So I said, “Why don’t we build one?” I thought it would be a challenging and fun project to build a prototype, to see if we could. From that idea, we started the business, bought the machinery, secured the trademark, and designed it. It was two years in development. How is the new Bowlus Road Chief similar and different from the original? Long: I wanted it to look identical, but be more usable. The new Bowlus Road Chief is four inches higher and seven inches

22 | ventana | May 2013

wider—enough space to add all the luxury features and technologies that have evolved since 1935. We added air conditioning and propane tanks. We put in a toilet and shower, and separate stateroom in the back. We increased the beds’ width, so they’re more comfortable. We installed refrigerators. Also, the new Bowlus Road Chief is built with an aluminum frame. The back frame of the original Bowlus was steel. An Airstream also has a steel frame. It’s quite an engineering challenge to build an aluminum frame, and it costs a lot more. But this is why it’s so immensely strong and lightweight, with nothing to rust. Mitchell: But as we brought back the brand, we respected and stayed true to the original. John always asks himself, “What would Hawley do?” And how are people responding? Mitchell: We were completely surprised at the amount of people interested. We almost immediately had a full year of reservations and had to ramp up production. Long: We expected a lot slower build up. We didn’t realize how many people shared our passion. How long does it take to make a Bowlus? Long: Eight to nine months. Each Bowlus is handmade, and a lot of labor goes into each one. Mitchell: Some people want their trailers customized with sound systems and televisions. Another client wanted us to create stairs for their dachshunds. We customize the experience for each owner. Long: The client chooses options, such as linens and fabrics. And each owner names the trailer. We put the name on the fender strips on each side. Each trailer is unique to that owner. v

ABOVE: Everything a traveler needs is cleverly tucked away. Twin V-beds convert to nearly king size and feature luxe linens, a thick foam/latex mattress, and under-bed storage. Intelligent interior design features are found at every turn.

A Walk on the Not-So-Wild Side Writer KATHY CHIN LEONG celebrates her fiftieth birthday with a (relatively) cushy lodge-to-lodge hike … and earns a rainbow of Band-Aids to boot.

M

agenta. Purple. Neon green. Sunshine yellow. These weren’t crayons, but the colors of the Band-Aids wrapped around my blistered toes. This was a collective badge of courage after four days of hiking 33 miles along the rugged Rogue River in Southern Oregon. While I’ve never competed in a marathon, for me, finishing this lodge-to-lodge trek with Rogue Wilderness Adventures was tantamount to achieving my personal Olympic gold, the ideal way to commemorate my fiftieth year living on this planet. While I lust for the outdoors, I must admit, I like getting pampered. Most attractive was this outfitter’s wimp-escape clause—at any time, for any reason, customers could dodge into the company river raft, which follows every hiker on the trail. The promise of tasty meals with local, organic ingredients beckoned me. Some may call this glamour hiking. Hard core athletes may deride it as hiking for sissies. I call it paradise. Not wanting to go solo, I asked good buddy Ellen Haas, a mom of three, to ride shotgun. And good thing I did because she was the one prepared with those neon bandages. And so, leaving behind our kids and husbands, we tackled this journey together in the fall and flew to Medford, Oregon, a relatively short trip from Ventura County or anywhere in California. According to tour operator and owner Brad Niva, most customers on his hikes are

28 | ventana | May 2013

women in their forties and higher. The cost for the four-day excursion runs $1,050, which covers lodging, food, and a guide. Each day you average about ten miles, hoofing it from one lodge to the next. Niva’s outfit also touts rafting and fishing, attracting more manly testosterone. Additional gourmet getaways feature endearing titles such as Pints and Paddles, a rafting tour with a brewmaster and beer tasting; Hopolicious, combo hiking and camping that also comes with a beer master extolling the virtues of Oregon beers at dinnertime; and, of course, the Wiking excursion, which weds hiking with wine tasting under the tutelage of the in-house sommelier. Throughout his years in business, Niva has entertained many notable figures. The week before our arrival, Laura Bush, the wife of our former prez, embarked upon a womenonly rafting expedition with the Midland 5, her childhood friends from Midland, Texas. “She was very gracious,” he says. “She took pictures with everybody.” As a side note, she allegedly made the secret service guys get out of her raft so she could brave the rapids with her gal pals. “Five ladies and 14 secret service agents made it an interesting group dynamic, but we had fun,” recalls Niva. While we don’t possess celebrity status, Niva’s staff took great measures to ensure our safety and enjoyment. A newlywed couple from Seattle, Jackie and Jim, completed our foursome on this group hike. Jackie found out about this adventure after she read about it in an

airline magazine. Before each day unfolded, our twenty-something guide, Josh Kelleher, gave us an overview of the route. He then he rafted with our luggage, keeping us within view as we took on the trail above. We needed only to carry water. For assistance, we could contact him via walkie-talkie. With the Rogue on our left as our compass, the single trail was easy to follow. “Stay by the river, always,” he reminded. “Tap the top of your head if you are okay; wave your arms if you need help. I will see you.” The first day we logged ten miles. Ellen and I executed long, fast strides with cocky confidence, and marveled at the majesty of the Siskyou Mountains, the Class 3 rapids, and the animal scat. Right. The poop. Ellen found the scat utterly fascinating. “Is it a bobcat? A deer? A bear?” We would stare at the brown or black pile of dung and estimate how long it had been there, what the animal probably ate, and what kind of creature it was. By week’s end, we were very familiar with bear poop, a large black mound often filled with berries. For most of the trip, our honeymooners lagged in the back, regaling us with show tunes from their wedding. They were a talkative and upbeat duo, enthusiastic about everything from the monarch butterflies to the chameleons that cut across our path. The trail held out surprises as we plunged deeper into the guts of the wilderness. Waterfalls. Fern grottoes. We monkey-climbed over moss-covered trunks and ducked under moss hair dangling from branches. Leaves in the forest thickets were now turning crimson and yellow. Meanwhile, dining was just as thrilling as the hiking. Like clockwork, Josh would leave a yellow backpack on the trail to signal that lunch was ready at the next turn. The gourmet spread included beverages, appetizers, main course, and dessert, all presented in the plating fashion of a four-star restaurant. During the week, we joined forces with Niva’s fishing group and they shared their fresh catch. Their guide whipped up a delectable lunch of herb-crusted barbequed salmon and trout as we got acquainted with our new companions. Our hiking days concluded at individually owned lodges, each with picturesque views of the river and mountains. The rustic cabins were small and clean, with private bathrooms and hot showers. At night the cooks prepared tasty home-style meals. At each inn, lights and generators for electricity went out promptly at 10 p.m.

Exhausted, we routinely fell into our beds after dinner and barely moved until we woke up the next morning. Over the course of the week, Ellen and I bonded over memories we would never have in the suburbs. We learned to pee in the woods without blushing. We felt the reverberation of our own voices echoing off cascading layers of mountains bordering the river. We identified and scarfed up wild blackberries and gooseberries. On one scorching hot afternoon, both of us filled our baseball caps with stream water and doused our heads in sheer delight. On the last night at Paradise Bar Lodge I encountered the Milky Way for the first time. There it was—a gauzy explosion of twinkling diamonds. We found a picnic table and lay on our backs, speechless at the shimmering points that blinked at us as if they wanted to make a human connection. The next morning we bolted out of bed, ready to finish our trek. Day Four was a sizzling 104 degrees and the ice in our water bottles vanished as our sandwiches morphed into mush. When we finally reached the pickup van, we formed a circle of celebration, chanting in unison, “We did it! We did it!” We hugged and high-fived and hopped into the van, and on the two-hour ride, while slurping my mashed turkey sandwich, I contemplated the highlights of the week: smelling warm wood in a forest glade, napping in a hammock, watching deer playfully buck horns. To be shouting over the roar of the rapids one second and then hearing nothing but my own breathing the next was surreal. A feat I thought I could never accomplish was realized. Now I am braver and more prepared than ever to embark on any guide-supported, organic meal-provided, lodge-to-lodge hike. All I have to do is bring my own fluorescent bandages. v

Taming the Wild Rogue Offered in the spring and fall, this four-day hike is well suited for agile beginners to intermediate hikers. It is recommended that hikers come in pairs so they can share cabins. For more information, visit Rogue Wilderness Adventures online at wildrogue.com or call 800-336-1647.

The Secret of the Muse From Morocco to Asia and Old World Europe: one whimsical property, a trio of culturally diverse dwellings hidden in Ojai.

O

By mark storer

ne could be forgiven for not knowing Glen Muse even existed. The current owner didn’t and he has lived in Ojai for 27 years. Darakshan Farber named the estate—a collection of culturally diverse dwellings: European, Asian, and Moroccan—and resides in the main house, an English Tudor design. The “Renaissance House,” as it has been dubbed, is a 9,000-square-foot blend of rich English Tudor exterior features with a decidedly Italian twist on the inside. “People have told me it’s a classic East Coast mansion,” Farber said. “It is a Tudor in the front, but as you walk in you can really sense the rooms have an Italian feel. But I’ve taken it more toward fantasy and have opened it up that way.” Farber, who recently listed the house for sale, is an Internet entrepreneur, a musician and producer, and a spiritualist who believes in inviting friends to his home rather than retreating into it. “When we bought, I said I couldn’t live in a place like this without sharing it.” The electronic gates, designed to keep strangers out, were thrown open and people were invited in. Active in Ojai’s Shakespeare festival and a member of the a cappella singing group Madrigali, Farber has used the house as a rehearsal space as well as the site of 36 | ventana | May 2013

healing and spiritual events. Most people talk about what inspired them to create spaces in their home. Glen Muse is a home that inspires others. “So many people have come here over the years at different events and talked about the energy in this house, and that’s evolved from the artistic events to the spiritual.” A few years back, Farber hosted ten Tibetan monks who performed a full ceremony with chanting, gongs, and prayers. “It was pretty cool,” he recalled. “These little Tibetan monks swam in the pool and played basketball, but they also prayed and celebrated ritual.” The grand entry is a landing allowing a climb up the middle stairway to the main floor or a descent down to the lower level via a stairwell on either side. Hardwood oak floors run throughout the main floor and each room, including a library, music room, living room with a large sunken wet bar, dining room and kitchen. In the living room, the hardwood floor is accented by hardwood walls and ceiling in ornate three-dimensional panels. “When I bought the house, one whole wall was an entertainment center circa 1985,” said Farber. “I had craftspeople come in and take that out. I didn’t want it to be a T.V. room.”

ABOVE: Cathedral ceilings lend to the acoustics of the music room, site of weekly performances by the Ojai vocal group Madrigali. RIGHT: Floor-to-ceiling oak warms the living room in the main house. CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Farber added a spiral staircase leading to a mosaic upper deck off the master bedroom. In the kitchen, natural textures create a comfortable gathering place; an adjacent butler’s kitchen allows serious cooking to proceed while guests congregate. A sprawling round bed complements the turret room, and classic French hardware and stained glass windows add to the appeal of a bathtub overlooking the pool.

The result is a wall that is now entirely oak, matched exactly to the original oak floor and ceiling. Even in a house that has become a spiritual and artistic attraction, the kitchen remains the center of it all. Farber hasn’t changed anything, so the mid-eighties state-of-the-art technology (think built-in can opener and blender, forest green tile counters) maintains a clean but dated air. “I’ve had a lot of amazing chefs here. I’m not one of them,” Farber quipped.” Behind the main kitchen is a fully supplied secondary kitchen where the bulk of the cooking for large groups gets done. A galley with heavy-duty stove and oven, as well as built-in marble countertops, this is a space dedicated to function, not form. The kitchen opens up to a wide deck. It’s one of the larger improvements that Farber made. Instead of using wood to build the outdoor space, the deck is made from textured plastic. He had pillars and a turret removed so the view to a beach-approach pool is unfet-

tered. The upstairs deck is a mosaic made by a friend of Farber’s who spent six months breaking up tile and placing it in circular patterns of blue and white with splashes of other colors like rose red mixed in. Two more houses sit below the main house, each with a different design theme. There’s an 800-square-foot Moroccan-style abode and a three-bedroom house with Asian highlights: koi pond, willowy bamboo plants, and what Farber originally intended to be a Zen garden. (The family currently renting the house had other ideas for that space.) As he prepares to downsize and move out of Glen Muse, Farber is not looking backward, nor does he have any regrets. “You bring the right ingredients together and give encouragement and trust, and let things happen,” he said. “Here’s hoping that the next owners are happy and looking.” v

THINKING OF BUYING OR SELLING? Read What Satisfied Customers Are Saying About Rod Before You Make That Important Decision! “Usually I “shop around.” Rod Tuazon was the first Realtor I interviewed. I cannot say enough good things about him. His handling of my difficult sale was not only professional, but was exceptionally warm, kind, and human.” A. Gorman

“Rod has been our real estate agent for over 13 years. He handled difficult transactions and succesfully negotiated our terms. We never had an issue that Rod was not able to handle.” C. & L. Carabajal

“Rod had always been in touch and continually updated us until we closed escrow. He is a true professional.” A. & H. Camaya

“We had made many phone calls to other agents, but Rod was the only one who responded. He was accommodating and patient until I found my second home” P. Gaitan

“The reason I thought about approaching Rod to join our company had nothing to do with his OUTSTANDING credentials, experience, education and knowledge, but it was because of the way he handled his clients. He had compassion. He fought for them. That’s why I sure would like to have Rod join our team!!!” J Thyne Jr., Realtor

“Rod sold our home within 60 days in a slow market and received full price using his effective markerting plan. We were very happy with his dedication in selling our home. J. & R. Villena

“Thank you Rod. We really appreciate ALL that you did to make this deal happen. We will highly recommend you when given a chance.” A. & J. Moreno

“We have constantly trusted Rod of his vast knowledge and his extraordinary customer service. He is always there 24/7 for us. C. & I. Corpuz

A New

C hapter

T his month, I'm featuring a piece by my top designer, John Muscarella. The design is entitled A New Chapter and represents a new path. It was designed and created using the stones from the client's previous wedding set: a .52 carat Emeraldcut Diamond, and 1.33 total carat weight of Princess-cut and Round Diamonds. Our client has an affinity for nature and John added a green Diamond and two blue Diamonds to represent the Earth and the Sky. It is mounted in 18kt Pink Gold and Lynn's signature 19kt White Gold. Let us design something special and gorgeous for YOUR new chapter!
