EDITOR’S NOTE

W
hat’s worse, starvation or obesity? Morbid question, I know. But that’s the sort of paradox I found ricocheting around my head this morning after spending time on the Ventura County Together website (vctogether.org). A cup of coffee later, I went through back issues to see when we’d featured Bonnie Weigel, the president and CEO of FOOD Share, Ventura County’s regional food bank. It was March 2009. Since then, the local demand for food—sustenance, basic nourishment, not haute cuisine—has only risen. In fact, there’s been a 63 percent increase locally over the past two years alone. While we strive to avoid editorial repetition, Bonnie’s the sort of community backer we don’t mind featuring now and again. But this isn’t about her, per se. Or about hunger or obesity. It’s about hunger and obesity—and poverty, homelessness, mental illness, health care, education… the list goes on. It’s about 40 or so local organizations working together to take care of people in need. Because chances are, the same people queued up for a meal at FOODShare will eventually be standing in line for healthcare at Westminster Free Clinic. There’ll be kids who could benefit from First 5 Ventura County. Parents, too. And the mentally ill among them really should be linked up with an organization like Turning Point rather than sent back to the riverbeds with a sandwich. Bonnie Weigel and Hugh Ralston, the president and CEO of the Ventura County Community Foundation, are the faces we’ve attached to this particular article (page 51). The coalition they’re a

part of, however, is comprised of countless volunteers, employees, donors, executive directors, and board members. Determining who and what makes the editorial cut each month is an ongoing dilemma. So from a purely selfish standpoint, I appreciate VC Together. I value its mission even more so. And what I like best about it is the overarching goal: to lead people toward selfsufficiency—the proverbial “teaching a man to fish.” Mental illness and drug addiction throw a flaming curveball at that intent, but many people simply need a nudge in the right direction. At a certain point, confidence builds. Pride kicks in. Next thing you know they’re ladling out soup on their day off from work rather than waiting in line. And if you’re wondering just how VC Together divides up the funds, the formula is simple: 30% to health care, 30% to shelter, 30% to food, and 10% to the 2-1-1 information and helpline to connect people to services and resources. The coalition may not be a silver bullet. I don’t believe there is one. But I do believe solutions start with awareness. It’s all too easy to look past societal hurdles when you’ve got your own race to run, your own ever-growing pile of problems to attend to. It takes a certain type of person to go beyond sympathy and actually strive to make a difference. Thankfully, there are a lot of those people around here. – Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

A NIGHT AT THE ADOBE NATIONAL CHARITY LEAGUE INC., VENTURA COUNTY CHAPTER The Ventura County Chapter of the National Charity League, Inc. (NCL) held its annual fundraiser in late-September at the Olivas Adobe Historical Museum. Fiesta-attired attendees honored Ventura County’s ranch heritage, and a silent auction raised money for NCL’s philanthropy fund. The National Charity League is a philanthropic, educational, cultural, and social organization for mothers and their daughters. The local chapter’s 240 members volunteer at 24 local philanthropies. Last year, the NCL mothers and daughters volunteered 6,642 hours of service and raised $22,000 for Ventura County nonprofits. For more information, visit nclventura.org.

CULTURE In Ojai, museum-esque Casa Los Robles updates the ranch-style archetype to showcase a stellar collection of pre-Columbian art. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK PHOTOGRAPHY BY GASZTON GAL
T
here are many ways to “give back” to one’s community, but perhaps none is more invasive than inviting a thousand or so looky-loos into your own home.
Joyce Roberston, a member of the Ojai Music Festival’s Women’s Committee, came a knockin’ three times before Greg and Mechas Grinnell finally acquiesced. She’d met Mechas through a group of golfing gals called the “Front Niners,” and learned that the couple own not just a stunning house, but a remarkable collection of Pre-Colombian ceramics, Amazonian feather work, and Southeast Asian textiles and other artifacts. Mechas also happens to be a talented architect, and her thoughtful remodel of the couple’s Ojai home provides a museum-like setting for the
ABOVE: Mechas Grinnell created a series of niches to showcase artifacts like this marriage presentation plate carved by the Paiwan tribe of Taiwan and a trio of pre-Columbian ceramics from Colombia. TOP: In the great room, drywall was stripped to reveal wooden beams and extensive stonework was reduced to make way for specially lit display cases. Congolese textiles adorn the high wall.

RIGHT: Moroccan style lamps purchased in Egypt hang in the courtyard. OPPOSITE TOP: Heavy wood elements and green granite countertops link the kitchen with an attached entertainment center and new entryway. “The idea was to incorporate the three as one visual unit,” Greg explains. collection. Many of the Pre-Columbian ceramics from Peru and Colombia, grouped by culture and age, are displayed in custom-designed coves in the open great room and adjoining kitchen and entertainment room. In the bedrooms, textiles hang on bamboo poles like modern art. A rare piece greets visitors in a specially created niche in the new foyer, providing a fine prelude. The outside of the home is equally appealing, particularly for sunset cocktails and pink moments from an expanded patio. The two-acre property boasts sweeping 180-degree views of the Ojai Valley and surrounding mountains. A back patio, where Mechas was stretched out on an Indonesian daybed recovering from a recent surgery, is especially inviting, with Egyptian lanterns strung from a tree. The vistas reminded her of her native Colombia, where the couple met some 30 years ago while Greg was working and living in the country. “My interest in these cultures began in the late-1970s and early-1980s while working as a banking representative for Security Pacific, especially the shamanic practices,” noted Greg, who also toiled in real estate finance, while pointing out a large ceramic piece he collected on an expedition. (Some of his exploits in the Amazon sounded downright hairy, rivaling those outlined in the book “River of Doubt,” about Teddy Roosevelt’s Amazon expedition a century ago.) The couple moved from Hermosa Beach to Ojai just two years ago,
trading the ocean and noises of the city for the tranquil country life. They thought something like the Holiday Home Look In, a benefit for the Ojai Music Festival and its BRAVO! music education program, might provide an opportunity to meet likeminded people in their newly adopted hometown. They both admit they love Ojai’s “diversity,” ranging from “Krishnamurti to hula hoopers to cowboys and Hollywood writers.” And it’s still close enough to the big-city arts scene in L.A., where Greg’s parents live. “Greg turned me from a city girl into a country girl,” laughs Mechas, whose anthropologist sister works with indigenous tribes. Ventura’s Donna von Hoesslin spreads the aloha spirit—one accessory at a time. BY ALLISON COSTA PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID PU’U
P
hilanthropy has many faces. There’s the stereotypical philanthropist who wears a dark suit, a shiny tie, and has very deep pockets. There’s also the philanthropist who’s all about telling you what a philanthropist she is, making giving the ultimate status symbol. Then there are the quieter ones, the ones who give because that’s who they are. Donna von Hoesslin, owner of Betty Belts, is one of these. Her wholesale accessory business, based out of tiny shop on Fir Street in downtown Ventura, specializes in handmade, ocean-inspired accessories. Inside the cozy space that feels as welcoming as a friend’s living room, ornate beaded belts with braided ties hang next to hemp bags and sea glass earrings. Rings, hairpins, silk scarves, and necklaces all beg to be touched, tried on, and taken home. Yet this shop is more than a shop. Donna is one of those people who can’t help but share her creativity; and because she exudes such warmth and openness, she often ends up in a mentoring role to her customers. “People come in here for inspiration,” she says. As we spend the morning together, sitting on the front stoop outside her store, Donna often pauses to say hello to other business owners on their way to work, and to shout out to fellow surfers heading to the beach. As she talks about her life and her work, she throws around terms like “creativity,” “inspiration,” and “dignity,” the words rolling easily off her tongue. And after spending five minutes with this creative, it is clear this is not for show. She’s just living her truth and building a life around her one true love: the ocean.

Donna grew up in the Oakland area, but spent 17 years in Germany after high school. For ten of those years she worked as a screenplay translator, a time during which she says she had given up on her creativity. It wasn’t until she took a trip back to the states and paddled into her first wave, in Santa Cruz, that everything changed. For this self-proclaimed klutz, riding that first wave “was a pivotal moment.” In 2002, she left Germany and moved to Santa Cruz. “I wanted to make surfing part of my everyday life,” she explains. She worked as a sales rep in the surf industry, and eventually helped a friend with marketing for his new belt business, Betty Belts. In time, Donna would buy the small company from him and turn it into much more than a belt business. Energized by surfing and with her creativity back in play, Donna designed her first piece of jewelry in 2004: her still popular Layna earrings, made from oyster shell mother of pearl. She moved to Ventura in 2005 and opened her shop on Fir Street in 2007. And thus began a career centered around ocean-centric apparel, and a life centered around her shop and surfing down at C-Street. “It was all inspired by the ocean,” she says, “Fate brought me to this.” While Donna designs her belts and jewelry here, most are made by a group of independent artisans on the island of Bali. “We have built something beautiful together that supports everyone involved in a manner that complements their lifestyle and respects their culture,” she says, “It’s no coincidence that people feel good energy in the product.”

From Donna’s passion for surfing and love of the ocean come two of her jewelry collections: one made from sea glass and another collection of surfboard resin jewelry. She recycles genuine local sea glass and transforms the pieces into treasures like chunky sea glass rings made with asymmetrical pieces of emerald green glass and her flower sea glass necklaces made with five “petals” of varying shades of blue glass. Her surfboard resin jewelry is the product of upcycling, or reusing discarded material to create something of greater value. Working with a small network of local board builders, Donna collects the hardened discs of resin and turns them into chunky pendants and dangly earrings that are pleasing to the eye and make good conversation pieces. Always looking to minimize waste, Donna takes the small scraps left from making her surfboard resin jewelry and makes them into treasures as well. She sets these smaller shards of resin into sterling silver and gives them names like “A diamond with a better story.” She also upcycles leftover hemp fabric from local clothing company Stewart+Brown to make her reversible “Ocean” belt. Betty Belts is part of the 1% for the Planet program, an international organization whose members contribute at least one percent of their annual sales to environmental causes. A few times a year Betty Belts does a Cause Day, when Donna selects a cause to which she donates 20 percent of all sales from that day. Over the years, Betty Belts has given to causes including the East Bali Poverty Project, Friends of

the Ventura River, Jean Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society, and the Ventura Charter School. Whether they are humanitarian, environmental, church-related, or educational causes—she just can’t seem to say no. In 2009, Donna traveled to Bali with Team Betty, the small group of female surfers sponsored by Betty Belts, to design the Cause Collection. Each surfer worked with Donna and the silversmiths to create a design, and ten percent of the sales of each design go to the surfers’ charity of choice. Proceeds from local surfer Mary Osborne’s “Confidence” earrings currently go to the Ventura Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation; Hailey Partridge’s “Compassion” jewelry yields proceeds for the Seafood Watch Program. So why does she do all this? Not because it sounds good in advertising, and not because it scores her karma points. Everything she does goes back to the ocean. “I love the ocean, I want it to be a big part of my life, my business. That’s what drives me...my customers are all ocean lovers.” She’s spreading the aloha spirit one accessory at a time. v Betty B., 12 N. Fir St., Ventura; 805.648.6997, bettybelts.com

Fir St., Ventura; 805.648.6997, bettybelts.com

ghosts the whisper of
In the Carmel Valley, a ‘20s-era estate elegantly combines philanthropy and luxury. BY MATT KATZ

ick and the boys got satisfaction in the rolling hills of Stonepine. Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder teamed up for a murder mystery weekend here. Cruise. Kidman. Depp. Eastwood. Even the shortlist of luminaries who’ve stayed at the Carmel Valley estate is a long list. And why not? Those looking for privacy—and a taste of the champagne lifestyle—would be hard-pressed to find a better sanctuary. This is a place refined enough to host Saudi royalty, discreet enough to sequester mob hitman Sammy “The Bull” Gravano when he turned state’s evidence against John Gotti. When business magnates like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates need an off-the-radar location for a conference, they speed dial Stonepine Estate Resort.

NOVEMBER 2013
Built from 1927 to 1929, the Relais & Chateaux property is a fantasy of sophisticated country living, a California gem with Old World polish—think Mediterranean architecture, European service, and details like 18th-century cherry wood paneling in a library where the pièce de résistance is a blazing seven-foot-high fireplace carved from Italian limestone. This fall, my wife and I were invited to Stonepine to learn about a new charitable giving program established by current owners Gordon and Noel Hentschel, who, in 1983, purchased the 330-acre estate as a mutual wedding gift—an ideal spot to raise their family. Several years later, they met Mother Teresa. That fortuitous encounter inspired Mrs. Hentschel to create the Noel Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping women and children in need. But it wasn’t until she and her then-teenage son Nicholas joined the religious sister on the front lines of Calcutta that Mrs. Hentschel, the CEO of American Tours International (one of California’s largest woman-owned businesses, generating nearly $3 billion annually) and a mother of seven, truly dedicated herself to philanthropy. Gordon, too, rose to prominence in the hospitality industry: as a vice president for Hyatt Hotels. And while Stonepine has traditionally been used for private functions and equestrian events, the couple recently opened their doors in the name of charity-oriented tourism. As of 2013, a full 20 percent of revenues and site fees from Chateau Noel, the property’s architectural centerpiece, will be donated to a charitable program endorsed by the Noel Foundation. So, with visions of Gatsby dancing in our heads we wended our way up the Central Coast, pushing eastward into the utopian Carmel Valley. This is one of the state’s most treasured areas, and Stonepine is cloistered in a jaw-dropping micro-region: a lush, oak-studded dell split down the middle by the easy flow of the Carmel Valley River. Over the river and through the second of two entry gates. Past a first-rate equestrian center and a handsome 12-foot bronze statue of a horse. At Chateau Noel we were greeted warmly and handed the keys to the Hermes House, one of four freestanding homes. Though the two-bedroom, four-fireplace adobe was designed as a celebrity hideaway, we weren’t always alone. I happened upon a Frenchman in the foyer one morning. He was just leaving. “Breakfast is on the table,” he pronounced
with a quiet air of deference. His timing was perfect. Indeed, everything was perfect during our weekend getaway. It’s that sort of place, an upmarket retreat where service is refined to a high art, where staff come and go like phantoms, rarely seen, turning down beds, delivering food, addressing guests’ needs with utmost efficiency and barely a whisper. My wife wandered into our bedroom one afternoon with a pleasantly bemused look on her face. “They were here,” she smiled. Turns out she’d put some items in the washing machine. We’d then taken a short drive to the coast for cioppino at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing. Upon our return, she was delighted to find neat stacks of familiar clothing—washed, dried, ironed, and folded. Guests at Stonepine have a range of activities from which to choose. We opted instead to lay low, soaking up the quietude, meandering the oak-studded grounds, occasionally hopping on a bicycle. Virtually everything onsite is available for guests’ use. And with rates at Chateau Noel running from $500 to $10,000 per day, those who can afford to stay here rest assured that their 20 percent donation will go a long way. Travel-related philanthropy isn’t a new concept, of course. But there are now more options than ever before, from charity-minded tour operators to hotel companies and cruise lines that kick back a portion of their profits to a cause. With its exclusive rates and relatively high percentage donation, Stonepine offers a singular sojourn: a private estate experience that’s not entirely self-indulgent. Here one finds an unusual combination of history and luxury, activities and tranquility. The grounds are stunning. The equestrian center is world-class. There’s shuffleboard and archery and manicured gardens. But during our stay, there was mostly silence—cracked intermittently by the shriek of a hawk, or the wind moving autumn leaves about. There was a subtle echo of the 1920s, too. A whisper of ghosts that ultimately faded into more profound silence. v STONEPINE: A PRIVATE ESTATE EXPERIENCE For detailed information, log on to stonepineestate.com or call 831-659-2245.

SHORTENINGTHE LINE A CONVERSATION ABOUT BASIC NEEDS, SELF-SUFFICIENCY, AND THE RESURGENCE OF COMMUNITY TOGETHERNESS. INTERVIEW BY MARK STORER • PORTRAIT BY DEBRA DIPAOLO
F
AILURE IS AN OPTION. In this new economy, where growth is slow or stagnant and hard work doesn’t necessarily translate into a livable wage, the inability to get by has become a reality for an increasing number of people. But we’re not doomed. At least not if you listen to Hugh Ralston, president and CEO of the Ventura County Community Foundation, and Bonnie Weigel, CEO of Food Share of Ventura County.
We sat down with the two community leaders to discuss an ever-evolving grass-roots non-profit effort known as Ventura County Together—a group of about 40 public and non-profit agencies collaborating to help local residents’ meet their basic needs and get back on their feet. VC Together shares information, focusing on specific needs, and works not just to bring awareness to a problem, but to help solve the problem once and for all.

NOVEMBER 2013
What exactly is VC Together?
Bonnie Weigel: Really, what we do is supply a safety and support net in the community. By 2009, there were all these new friends who needed help for basic needs: housing, medical, food. The need has increased, not decreased. All of our groups are helping the same people, so we got together and asked, ‘Is there a way we can do this more efficiently?’
people with basic needs is the depressing part. The good news is that we have come through some strategic planning, and that we’ve got public agencies and nonprofits coming together, which is encouraging. We’re learning about what’s going on in the community and we have a lot more knowledge about all the things we do and how they make an impact. Most people are impacted by multiple issues, not just one.
Did you foresee VC Together growing as it has?
Give us an example of a VC Together collaboration?
Hugh Ralston: It’s scary to think that we started this five years ago. We’ve seen this economic contraction morph into a financial panic, and back then we sensed that something was happening in Ventura County around basic needs, but we weren’t sure what it was. How did you design the collaborative? HR: It started with the Ventura County Community Foundation, Cause, and the United Way in Ventura County back in 2007 developing the freeze fund. We had a particularly brutal freeze (the governor declared Ventura County a disaster area) and recognized that it was not going to be good, particularly for farm workers. VC Together was a natural outgrowth of that, of coming together to see what we could do to better assist people. By December of 2008, we started asking what was going on in our community and we saw some of the changes that the economy brought here. And now you’re doing more than simply providing food or short-term fixes?
BW: When we handed someone a bag of food at Food Share, they would almost always ask if we knew someone who was hiring, or if they knew a place where they could stay or get a car repaired or whatever. The light bulb went on for us a few years ago when we realized that our stakeholders didn’t want just a short-term solution. So we redrew our organizational plan to figure out how to get people to move toward self-sufficiency. It was about asking if this new normal, with people living at barely subsistence or poverty level, was acceptable. Beyond the economy, what have you identified as the main causes of poverty in Ventura County? BW: This is something we’ve talked about not just in Ventura County, but at the national level as well. A third of our country is living at the poverty level. We asked why that is the case. There are three main reasons. The first one is social capital. When I grew up, everyone looked out for each other in their community. That has diminished in our country. The second one is about how a city is laid out. Transportation and getting people to and from work is a real problem for people living paycheck to paycheck. The third one is that we spend less on our poor children than any other country in the world. It’s no wonder we have this divide. And when we ask these people what they’re looking for, they always talk about wanting to get back to self-sufficiency. How do we take care of them today and give them a bridge to self-sufficiency? How many people do you serve in Ventura County? HR: When we started, Food Share was serving around 50,000 people a month. That number is now 74,000. It has stabilized, but if you step back, you know the economy is growing a little bit. But what that means is that one in nine people in Ventura County can’t make it through the month without help. The fact that we are still helping
HR: One of the things we’re doing is building a database for things like knowing which churches in Ventura County are doing mission outreach with a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen. The challenge is not just in building the database, but how to keep it up to date. Now, we’re all helping each other and getting smarter about what’s going on and the challenges that both the public and private sector are making. The sequester (automatic spending cuts in the federal budget) has really impacted our area, and we’re able to use information from that and give assistance to people who are directly affected by it. There’s no silver bullet for these issues; there’s no one solution, no one pot of money that’s going to solve these problems. I’ve been at the Community Foundation for ten years and we’ve seen a number of changes in that time. What we’re finding is that when we combine together, we have a better sense of what’s happening and how to deal with it. So there’s no silver bullet, but are there any answers? BW: It’s really about making connections. If we can hand someone a bag of food and help connect them to housing, and help give them the skills they need—now, just like that, the family can move on. There will always be some who can’t be self-sufficient for whatever reason. But for those that can or want to, we are working collectively to help them get to that point. So when we go out and do a food drive, we’ll have someone from Southern California Gas who can talk to you about lowering your utility bills. That’s a few more bucks in your pocket. And there’s also someone there from Cal Fresh who can help you get fresh groceries every week. We’ll also bring healthcare screeners and other things that will help people ‘shorten the line,’ as we say. That’s getting them back to self-sufficiency. You’re seeing positive steps then toward getting people back on their feet. BW: For this generation, poverty is our civil rights issue. We see people who want to move out of that and back to self-sufficiency. We’re studying everything, and the part that gets me really excited is that we’re seeing the big national groups like United Way, Feeding America, St. Vincent de Paul saying, ‘This is not about us.’ If we can work together and help each other, we can get more help to more people more efficiently and shorten the line between poverty and self-sufficiency, and we’re asking how we can do that more effectively in Ventura County. v For more information about Ventura County Together, visit vctogether.org or call 805-988-0196.
