Anniversary Martin V. “Bud” Smith

Robert Lopez

Ventura County’s own Tower Club will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Saturday, October 13th with a dazzling black tie Gala. Members enjoying one of our fabulous wine dinners.

The private city club, which now has a membership of over 700, is perched atop the tallest building in Ventura County--on the 22nd floor of Oxnard’s high rise Financial Building. “It is a quarter of a century since visionary developer Martin V. ‘Bud’ Smith opened the Tower Club,” noted President and General Manager Robert Lopez, “and since then we have become something of an landmark.” In October of 1988, the first annual Board of Governors Anniversary Ball was held by Bud Smith and The Charter Board of Governors. The ball was a chance for the general membership to be wined and dined in grand style, alongside the Board Members. Since that day, he began a tradition of celebrating the anniversary of the club each year in October and continued to so until his passing in 2001. As the General Manager and now current owner of the Club, Robert Lopez has kept Bud’s tradition alive to this day.

Our newly remodeled Sky Lounge has the best views in Ventura County.

This year’s celebration promises to be an unforgettable occasion, as Robert has pulled out all the stops to insure a remarkable event for all who attend.

Members arriving in style.

Now through October 25th, the Tower Club is offering incredible incentives to become a new member during our ’25 Drive’. To find out more about how to be a part of this memorable event and more, please call The Tower Club’s membership Director, Tanya Sorum at 805-983-7777 ext 223 or email at tsorum@towercluboxnard.com

“norma Jeane,” bill macneil

editor’s note

the best medicine

T

he last thing Michelle Obama expected to find in the Oval Office was her husband, shirtless, with Betty White. She knew about the Betty Boop tattoo on his chest; she’d seen plenty of that. And his smoke-shrouded past was no secret either—to her or the nation—so the joint dangling from his presidential smile wasn’t terribly shocking. But Betty White? A proud democrat, yes. And grandmotherly sweet, to be sure. Still, at 90-something the blue-eyed Golden Girl was no Norma Jeane. Somehow, though, it all made perfect sense: in the mind of Bill MacNeil (page 36). With an acerbic wit and a computerized graphics tablet for manipulating photos, the Ojai-based satirist unleashes his militant sarcasm on everyone from the president to an “un-airbrushed” Julia Roberts. Like Mel Brooks, he is an equal opportunity jokester, a politically incorrect dismantler of every race, creed, color, and political affiliation. No one is immune to his irreverence. Democrats. Republicans. Scientologists. In Bill’s world, Barbies go wild, flashing their plastic bumps; Obama channels Jimmy Cliff; and Sarah Palin sinks her bloody fangs into a helpless salmon. I am aware that MacNeil’s caustic brand of humor won’t resonate with all of our readers. Satire has always been that way. In 1599 the Archbishop of Canterbury issued a decree banning it entirely. In 2009 Samsung sued a journalist for a million bucks over a satirical column. Some things never change. Others evolve. MacNeil uses modern tools (and timeless imagination) to enhance the absurdity of real life—which is wackier than anything any satirist from Horatio to Stephen Colbert could ever concoct. While cobbling together this issue, I noticed that the Mind of MacNeil doesn’t slow down now that he strums his acoustic in Ojai rather than 6

Hollywood. Fresh images pop up frequently online, tracking modern history. Clinton’s articulate takeover of the recent DNC is represented, and shortly after her death in August, comedian Phyllis Diller appeared with angel’s wings. I once interviewed Diller for a magazine article. Like MacNeil, her art—her comedy—flowed naturally. She didn’t need to turn it on or warm up; it wasn’t a struggle for her to be funny. And in the same respect, I get the sense that Bill MacNeil would’ve been a photo manipulating satirist whether or not he’d made the big time. When I spoke to Diller she was nearly 90 and just the firecracker she ever was. Her wit was still razor sharp, her timing perfect. I called her at noon. “I’ll call you back as soon as I finish my brekkie,” she said. “ I didn’t get to sleep until five!” She erupted in that trademark cackle of laughter. I didn’t ask what she’d been up to all night. Instead, I tried to ease in a simple question while I had her on the line: How’d you get your start in comedy? She responded without hesitation. “I was just thinking about that—as I was sitting here chewing!” We both broke into laughter, hers considerably more impressive than mine. I realized then that I’d laughed out loud three times—and we’d yet to begin the interview. Now, I don’t know much. Really, I don’t. Not with absolute certainty. But one thing is certainly true: this is an imperfect world. Laughter helps. We can occupy and chant and picket. We can boycott big-box stores, shop local, eat organic. We can react to the madness in any number of ways— most of them ineffectual. And we can laugh. As Phyllis put it, “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.” — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

What’s New at New West? A youthful new conductor for one. IVOR DAVIS chats with Music Director Marcelo Lehninger and tracks the progress of a local symphony looking toward the future. 12

october 2012

he notorious Arab Spring of 2012 left a shocking trail of vanquished Middle Eastern despots and awful carnage. The less chronicled Summer/Fall Arts Revolution of Ventura County has also been quite tumultuous. The coups have been bloodless: the only visible damage appears to be a vast hemorrhaging of cash—plus a few bruised egos. But changes are afoot, with new leadership set for the Ventura and Ojai Music festivals as well as radical fiscal restructuring at everyone’s favorite hometown theater, The Rubicon. Which takes me to the point: the arrival of exciting new (and young) leadership at the New West Symphony. When the eighteenth season kicks off in late-September with violinist Anne Akiko Meyers performing Barber’s violin concerto Opus 14, it will do so under the aegis of two thirty-something leaders: Russian-born executive director Natalia Staneva and Brazilian-born Marcelo Lehninger, who wields a lively baton and was a mere teenager when the New West’s first conductor, the charismatic Boris Brott, first set foot in Ventura County. Lehninger was one of a number of candidates for the role of music director. He won out over more experienced candidates because of his obvious kinship with the symphony musicians, according to a member of the selection committee. New West has blatantly opted for a young broom in an effort to stem declining symphony attendance and attract younger concertgoers. They are part of an obvious trend—which is, wherever possible go for the young: the vibrant and the diverse. Gustavo Dudamel, 31, in L.A. has worked magic with the L.A. Phil; Poland’s Krzysztof Urbanski, 29—the current ‘conductor flavor of the month’—is reviving orchestras and programming in Indianapolis and other cities. Ms. Staneva, who was appointed to the executive director spot last year after a stint as the New West’s general manager, enthuses: “Marcelo is engaging and very curious to learn more. He is bringing the best practices from the Boston Symphony and gives us a chance to learn how they do things.” Lehninger comes to Southern California with impeccable credentials. He was handpicked to be the assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony orchestra by James Levine and made his debut with the orchestra in 2010 with violinist Pinchas Zukerman as he stepped in for the ailing Levine. Married for six years to a clarinet playing wife, Laura, from Denver, whom he met while she held a non-musical job in public health in Brazil, he is the proud father of an almost year-old daughter, Sofia. We recently spoke to the new maestro about his vision for the New West.

Lisa-Marie Mazzucco

Internationally acclaimed violinist Anne Akiko Meyers performed in late-September as part of a “Marcelobration!” to welcome the new conductor.

IVOR DAVIS Are you moving to Ventura County? MARCELO LEHNINGER I’ll commute for concerts. But I will spend a considerable amount of time getting to know members of the local community. That is so important.

minutes into that rehearsal my wife called to confirm she was expecting our first child. I was so excited that I announced the great news to the entire orchestra. And so our relationship started on such a personal level. I was there at the right moment.

ID Can you tell us more about your musical background? ML I grew up in Rio and there was music 24-7 in my house. My mother, Sonia (Goulart), is a pianist, my father, Erich, a violinist. I did my homework listening to great music. My parents divorced when I was three. My father moved to Sao Paulo and I would go every weekend to see him as concertmaster for the Sao Paulo Symphony. I watched rehearsals and became fascinated with conducting as a child. My stepfather, Sergio, was an astronomer and music fan as well as being a fantastic jazz pianist. He opened the world of jazz up for me.

ID Some on the selection committee described you as shy. Surely a shy conductor is an oxymoron? ML Some conductors are shy. I think it’s a weird double personality we have when we are on stage in front of 80 musicians. Right away we are not shy anymore; we are into the music and forget about it. I’m comfortable on- and offstage, and I like talking to people.

ID What excites you about the New West? ML The orchestra—many are Hollywood studio musicians—is absolutely fantastic, with great energy. ID How did you connect so swiftly with the New West? ML I’ve always had a strong affinity for musicians. When I was asked to conduct the New West in 2011, I flew in for the first rehearsal and didn’t know what to expect. Twenty

ID What’s your reaction to those who say the New West wants to cash in on the Dudamel syndrome? ML It’s normal that people compare, and I respect that. He’s a wonderful conductor and a very nice man and I have nothing but good things to say about him. We are both from South America. But I am not him. And we don’t have their budget. ID Do you have a strategy to bring younger audiences to New West performances? ML There’s no quick fix. Only solutions that include creating the future education of musicians at home and at school. Symphonies are also hiring younger directors because october 2012

Pianist Roger Kellaway brings the jazz, a musical narration to match photographer Joseph Sohm’s “Visions of America.”

Joseph Sohm

ARE YOU… EXPERIENCED? The New West’s boldest move of the season is a January “photo symphony” entitled “Visions of America: A Celebration of Democracy.” Internationally acclaimed photojournalist Joseph Sohm has teamed up with his friend and Ojai neighbor, Emmy-winning composer Roger Kellaway, to bring an original creation to the concert hall: a marriage of Sohm’s dazzling portfolio of American photos and Kellaway’s music. “The goal is to take the audience on an experiential journey through time and the 50 states,” says Sohm, who, along with his wife, Leslie, is a longtime New West supporter. Eclectic ingredients for the night include Marcelo Lehninger conducting the symphony, with Kellaway live on the piano. Add a recorded narration by Clint Eastwood (no empty chairs here) and words and lyrics by Oscar winning songwriters Alan and Marilyn Bergman. Toss in Gershwin’s Concerto in F Major for piano and orchestra, add singers Steve Tyrell and Judith Hill, and it promises to be a night to remember. The January concert is the West Coast premiere; “Visions of America” was well

received when it was first performed by the Boston Pops earlier this year. The project evolved over dinners with the Sohms and Kellaways in Ventura County. “It involves music and visuals, weaving in a storyline of American history whenever possible,” explains Sohm, who has produced multimedia shows for Bill Clinton and Jerry Brown. “It’s a bit like a symphony, like a music video, and like a documentary. But really none of the above.” No one is counting, but the music is written around an estimated selection of some 1,000 photos taken by Sohm over several decades.

2012/2013 MASTERPIECE SERIES New West Symphony will continue to present concerts in three different venues: Oxnard Performing Arts Center, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, and Barnum Hall in Santa Monica. For detailed information about tickets and performances, visit newwestsymphony.org or call 805.497.5800.

young people can feel more connected. ID Tell me about the You Tube competition, with the four winning soloists to perform with the symphony’s final Beethoven Ninth concert next May? ML We can cut costs. It means you don’t have to bring musicians in from around the country and house them in hotels for a week. We are taking advantage of today’s technology. What’s important to remember is that we will have a professional jury to judge the candidates. ID And another innovative concert is “Visions of America,” the photo symphony a novel program featuring the photography of Ojai’s Joe Sohm and the music of Roger Kellaway? ML It’s another innovative program. Patriotic, very powerful, which people have already enjoyed when it was performed with the Boston Pops earlier this year (see sidebar). ID Who were your inspirations? ML My parents, such wonderful musicians who taught me so much. At the beginning, James Levine was my mentor. But so many great musicians along the way were encouraging. v

swing time Celebrating 35 years of the Pierpont Racquet Club. by mark storer

S

Photography by gary and pierre silva

pencer Garrett is a Ventura original, and like most originals he’s creating a legacy. A fourth-generation resident, his grandmother’s sister, Mattie Gleichmann, owned the Pierpont Inn from 1929 until 1979. His family again owned the landmark hotel from the nineties until 2005. But it wasn’t the hotel business that Garrett and his brother, Scott, wanted to be a part of, though they knew they wanted to work together. Family is important to the Garretts, whether by blood or by friendship and work. So with the help and support of their parents, Betty and Joseph, the brothers formed a limited partnership and, along with some friends, secured a loan from the Bank of A. Levy and leased a five-and-a-half-acre parcel of land from the Pierpont Inn. “The original idea was to build a multi-purpose club with tennis and racquetball,” said Garret. “We started looking around Southern California at other racquet clubs, and we did 300 door-to-door surveys in Ventura and Oxnard to determine what residents might want.” The survey led to the addition of an indoor pool at the club, which at the time was an attractive rarity in Ventura. Scott moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and for a time the brothers operated five different clubs in that state along with the Pierpont Racquet Club. Scott still lives in New Mexico, though they have sold the other properties. On Christmas day, 1976, members played on the club’s tennis courts for the first time. But it wasn’t until the following year, on October 1, 1977, that the clubhouse was opened. “That’s what we’re celebrating this year with an Oktoberfest,” said Garrett. 18 | ventana | october 2012

The Garretts were in their late-twenties when they opened the club. “It was a business idea for us,” said Spencer. “I played tennis in college six times; we weren’t tennis players. But we wanted to create a place where people felt welcomed. We wanted to sort of be like Cheers, where everybody knows your name.” Thirty-five years later, the club now offers 12 tennis courts, two racquetball courts, a squash court, indoor and outdoor pools, and a wide variety of fitness programs, as well as a cafe. They also hold group exercise classes from yoga to taekwondo and offer childcare to their customers. “We owe our success to our employees,” said Garrett. He should know. In 1981, he married Nancy Weile, the club’s first swim instructor. “We have a lot of staff members who’ve been with us for 10 or 20 years, and we have members who’ve been with us for all 35.” One of those members is Bonnie Carlton, whose husband, Don, a Realtor, is an original investor with the Garretts. “I love the people. It’s like a family. All my best friends come from the racquet club,” she said. “We all know each other and love each other. When the club is closed for a week, we all can’t wait until it opens and we can get back.” Patti Channer and her husband, Gary, the second pediatric dentist to come to Ventura, are also 35-year members. “We moved here in 1977 with 1,500 dollars in our pocket,” she explained. “The first thing we saw was the racquet club. We wrote a check for 900 dollars and joined.” Virtually all of her friends—and even some of her husband’s clients—have come from the club, she said. “We all know each other’s kids; we raised them together. It is a legacy.” v

RIGHT: Spencer Garrett was in his twenties when he and his brother, Scott, opened the PRC. A fourth-generation Ventura resident, Garret attributes the Club’s success to his team of employees. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: A dozen tennis courts, a variety of fitness programs, and indoor/outdoor pools keep members coming back year after year. Some have been with the Club since day one, in October of 1977.

Where the art is Midtown Ventura’s homegrown gallery. By andrea kitay

Photos by gaszton gal

n a tightly knit section of Midtown Ventura where neighbors are friends, art aficionado Denise Sindelar and her husband, Jim, are quietly building one of the county’s most expansive private collections of local artwork. From the locally made spider-web stained glass door to the backyard where metal sculptures stand like soldiers guarding the dozens of palm and orchid species Jim rescues, the pair might as well be living life straight out of “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler,” California style. Sindelar began collecting in the late-eighties, and her relationships with local artists have often blossomed into friendships. Her original exposure to Ventura’s art scene was through venues like the Palm Street Gallery, the Momentum Gallery, and exhibits at the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard. Although not an artist herself, she opened “The Upstairs Gallery” in Downtown Ventura with partner Natalie Siman, keeping the doors open until 2004 when she would trade in her entrepreneurial life for a position administering the City of Ventura’s Visual Arts program, among others.

28 | ventana | october 2012

“Retail is a hard slog,” sighs Sindelar. “My husband is really the stabilizing force that has allowed me to pursue my art addiction. “When you’re young, money is tight and buying art seems like an impossibility. But when I saw my friends buying clothes on layaway, it gave me the idea to see if art galleries would do the same. They did.” Sindelar decided early on that rather than choose art based on its potential future monetary value, she would surround herself with what moved her. That philosophy still guides her today. The tiny 900-square-foot house is packed with books and art; even the kitchen’s recent renovation received the requisite Sindelar nod to art: a new venting hood installed above the vintage, fifties-era Merritt and O’Keefe stove was painted in a Day of the Dead theme by Ventura muralist M.B. Hanrahan. Recycled glass countertops with an iridescent subway glass backsplash and vaulted ceiling give the diminutive galley-style kitchen the illusion of being larger than it is. Cork floors provide insulation and a softer step under foot.

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: The den showcases photography by Schaf, mixed media by Debra McKillop and dm Spaulding, etching by Cornelis Botke, prints by Mathilde Ziegler and J. Roundtree, paper construction by Jennifer Korsen, and watercolor by Susan Petty. In the living room: (l. to r.) sculptures by Jane Mckinney and Quincy Neri; painting by Carole Milton; mixed media by dm Spaulding; print by Anna Porakova; photo by Schaf; paintings by Jorge, Jeff Hughart, Elana Kundell, Jason Mahakian, and Aimee French; and graphite work by Jane McKinney. Mixed media by Catherine Coan, fused glass by Robert Eyberg, and mixed media works by Holly Charlon adorn the Sindelar bedroom.

Despite the home’s diminutive size, the sheer number of paintings, sculptures, and photographs lend it a gallery feel. Every wall showcases paintings, etchings, and photographs, the only unifying theme being skeletons, which I see tucked on top of the icebox, on a book shelf, in a painting. In the living room, self-taught, mixed media folk artist gauvin is the most represented. A fan of Van Gogh, gauvin painted his own version of the artist’s 1887 self-portrait with a twist. In the gauvin version, commissioned by Sindelar, hubby Jim’s face replaces that of Van Gogh. The piece is startlingly Van Gogh-esque in its use of tones and hues. Another gauvin, titled “Waiting for Vincent,” is painted in gauvin’s trademark silver acrylic on a black background. The portrait depicts an 1880s-era African American woman in silver, and is striking as the paint catches the morning light of the living room. But Sindelar’s taste isn’t restricted to paintings. She has several works by local photographer Steven Schaefer, whose black-andwhite prints are the result of old-school style film and development techniques. Less traditional media in the collection include works

by Diane Bennett in the assemblage style, a technique Sindelar explains goes a step beyond collage. Cardboard, recycled materials, tin signs, and found objects are just part of the artist’s coterie of tools. In the bedroom, a set of assemblage works by Holly Charlon titled “Summer” and “Winter” are mounted behind glass. Each is a miniature version of dresses held static in a sort of 3D. The detailed use of lace, intricate beading, and rose petals is held in place with wax, giving the dresses the illusion of being in motion. Nationally recognized artists also grace Sindelar’s walls, including a Kitty Botke etching titled “The Gift.” Botke is the granddaughter of Jesse Arms Botke, the thirties-era Santa Paulabased painter whose ornate gold leaf paintings and etchings of ornamental birds are exhibited in both in the Museum of Ventura County and the Santa Paula Art Museum. “Buy what you love,” says Sindelar, reiterating her philosophy that it’s best to invest in art that moves you; collecting is not about potential monetary appreciation. “That’s the only [art] advice I offer my friends.” v october 2012 | ventana | 31

The Mind of MacNeil An innocuous guitar-strumming exterior belies Bill MacNeil’s inner provocateur. But don’t be fooled. Leslie A. Westbrook follows the path of a modern satirist. photography by Amanda Driver

on’t be deceived by that sweet young boy on the opening page of graphic designer/singer-songwriter Bill MacNeil’s website. Behind a face of innocence lies a wickedly creative mind—and no one escapes his poison pen. From Prince Charles to Woody Harrelson, Leonardo da Vinci to politicians on both sides of the political spectrum, rock stars to the everyman. Anyone is fair game. His images range from macabre to tender, but nearly all of them are hilarious, depending on your sense of humor. Having toiled under the pressures and rapid-fire deadlines of late-night television—specifically, the Johnny Carson and Jay Leno shows—the 59-year-old Ojai resident is no stranger to world affairs and celebrity blunders. Still, the kid is star struck. After spending 25 years as a graphic artist for NBC/Universal in Los Angeles, including freelance work and 18 years as one of two lead artists for “The Tonight Show,” MacNeil continues to doodle on his computer, as well as compose and sing songs. “I had been coming to Ojai for several years, visiting friends, and I grew attached right away. It reminded me so much of where I came from—without the long, cold winters,” recalls the Massachusetts native who grew up in a rural setting on the outskirts of Boston. He was the middle child of four (according to MacNeil math), with two older siblings and a younger sister. “Of course I was the most talented, the best looking, the smartest, the most interesting, and certainly the favorite,” he jokes, “although our governess would disagree… I’m just kidding, we had no governess.” MacNeil has been drawing pictures since he could hold a pencil. Both his dad and his paternal grandmother were artistically inclined. “My dad noticed my ability early on and always encouraged it,” he says, adding, “When I was ten years old, with a little help from my dad I drew a portrait of President Kennedy shortly after the fateful day in Dallas, and we mailed a copy of it to the Kennedy family. I received a thankyou letter back from Jackie O, which my mom saved. I was happy to find it among her things when she passed.”

Above: Bill MacNeil originally came to California to pursue a more traditional, and less abrasive, form of art. Opposite: “Mr. Warmth,” Don Rickles. Right: Johnny Depp, caricature portrait.

After high school, he studied commercial design at the New England School of Art but was told by most of his teachers that he would do better pursuing a career in fine arts. Ironically, he wound up, many years later, working as a graphic artist/designer in television. Late nights spent over the drawing table (in this case, a computer screen) may yield such images as a “gay” version of the Big Boy hamburger mascot, a spoof on Woody Harrelson’s marijuana chip Doritos, an aged Julia Roberts, the presidential carvings of Mount Rushmore morphed into the rock bank KISS… You get the picture. “I’ve always loved to elicit laughter. I was always the class clown, and I’m a huge fan of stand-up and improvisational comedy,” he says. “I’ve always tried to incorporate humor into my artwork, even before doing so for a living with ‘The Tonight Show.’” Along with being one of two lead artists for “The Tonight Show,” MacNeil also provided voice-over in a running sketch called “The Tonight Show Request Line.” The premise was that people were calling in from various locations nationwide to ask Jay Leno a question. In actuality, it was actors backstage supplying the voices. “The first one I did was the most nervous I have ever been in my entire life: I played a stoner from Chino, California!” he laughs. Working for the great Johnny Carson—creating the visuals to his verbal jokes—for many years meant meeting just about everybody in show biz who walked through the doors of the NBC studios. And being a child of the times, MacNeil watched a lot of television growing up. “The days with Johnny Carson were some of the best times of that job. As a kid, I would sneak my dad’s old mini black-and-white television set up to my room at night to watch Johnny, and then sneak it back before morning,” he recalls. “To find myself working with him for nine-and-a-half years, and then to stand talking to him at his house the night of his last show, was quite wonderfully surreal, to say the very least.” And he never lost that sense of wonder. “I got a big thrill any time I ran into anyone even slightly famous,” he says. A few standout encounters include meeting Jerry Mathers from “Leave it To Beaver,” holding hands with Joni Mitchell while talking with her (“melting at the same time”), holding the door for Lucille Ball (she thanked him “in a smoker’s 38

voice that sounded like a foghorn”), and preventing Bette Davis from “falling on her ass” when she slipped while exiting the stage. But his favorite story is about the time he tried to meet the legendary actor Jimmy Stewart: “It was a Saturday and they were doing a roast of Joan Collins at NBC. I was the stand-by graphic artist for the show. I didn’t have a lot of duties to fulfill that day; I was there just in case they needed something last minute. This allowed me to position myself in locations where I might seize an opportunity to meet and shake hands with Mr. Stewart.” He finally got his chance—in the restroom. “When I walked in and saw him standing at the urinal, I came to my senses and realized, maybe I’d rather meet him elsewhere. Then when he didn’t wash his hands, I was no longer so anxious to shake one of them! I did get to see him several times after that, and it was always a thrill.” He admits that working with the writers was difficult at times: too many creative minds colliding and clashing. MacNeil believes that a good joke, like anything else, needs a good solid foundation to start with. If it has that, everything else is icing on the cake. “No amount of well executed graphics can make a joke funny if the idea is not funny to begin with. Being a perfectionist by nature, it was difficult for me to adjust to creating art that was only on the air for seconds, and not to fuss with it as I would with anything else I would create artistically,” he says. Now the artist has time to pursue his other love: music. “I originally came to California to try to make it in the music business as a singer-songwriter. Music has always been my main passion, and songwriting is a constant activity in my life.” MacNeil went into the studio this summer to record some of his songs, which he plans to showcase at various venues in Ojai and Ventura. “I never really pursued the business side of music, especially once I began working fulltime,” he explains, “but I never stopped writing songs. And like anything you stay with long enough, you get seasoned. I’m ready now, more than ever, to get these songs heard beyond my four walls.” So if you happen to hear some late-night music coming from a wee cottage on Foothill Road in Ojai, stop and listen a while. You may have stumbled upon Bill’s MacNeil’s World. v

Joy! Last month the design was a way to express a lot of thinking and meditation. This month it’s about the joy of designing. This piece is the 17th in my series called Pure Design. The Pure Design series is all about manipulating the space around the gems and your finger. Number 17 is built of two structures that sit side by side, yet ultimately intersect and become one. As you trace each structure around you will find it changes shape and direction continuously, each starting on one side, only to flow to the other. The ring is available in 18K yellow gold, 19K white gold, platinum, or palladium. And it is made to fit round center diamonds or colored gems from ¾ carat to 2.5 carats. I will have a version of it set with a one carat diamond in the center and made in palladium by the middle of the month.
