Home Colors Like a bat on a bright day, I w atch the shifting colors of September. I am not blind to the colors, but I am colorblind. Every other male on my mother’s side of the family is. Which means that if I have a grandson and he takes after me he’ll park in the red zone for 24 minutes thinking it’s green and he’ll load and unload passengers in the green zone thinking it’s white. Off-white. Ivory, perhaps. I really don’t know. In elementary school, he’ll paint the Indian Ocean purple—if he’s like me—and his art teacher will praise his “creativity” while classmates snicker and he squints to no avail. As a colorblind person, I find the work of Cathleen Smith (p. 45) incomprehensible. I do not mean that as a hyberbole; in fact, I cannot comprehend the subtleties of what she does. The distinctions between Forest Green and Grass Green, Sky Blue and Maya Blue whiz over my head in a blaze of primary colors. If you’ve ever searched bewilderedly through a fan deck at the local paint store you’ll sympathize. Gone are the Crayola days of “green” and “blue.” Colors now have titles. Even white is divided into a thousand shades of gray. Our goal to keep you a safe distance from the quicksand of mundane editorial
content has been a recurring theme in these Notes of mine. We’re always looking for stories with a bit of pop—an unexpected edge, a tight focus. The Stephanie Rubin article on page 21 is a good example. An eco-minded landscape architect based in Ventura, she’d make a nice sunny profile for a magazine like Ventana. A number of locally-based ecominded landscape architects would. But Stephanie (with the help of her artist husband, Chris Isner) has created a unique niche: building eco-sensitive doghouses with green roofs. Frivolous? Depends on what shade of rose-colored glasses you wear. Dig a little, though, and you’ll find a serious lesson at the heart of her company Sustainable Pet Design. Next time you’re Googling around, check out SustainablePet.com. Sit… Stay… There’s a lot to learn. One thing I’ve learned recently is that home is the most relaxing place I have. My wife and I were discussing this earlier today as we drove back to Ventura from a family “vacation.” Dictionary.com defines vacation as “a period of suspension of work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation, or travel.” We rented a beach house on the Central Coast, so I suppose travel is somewhat applicable. But when family includes kids ages 9 weeks to 7 years old, a family vacation provides little rest. Recreation was mostly bottled, fermented, and corked. And between my iPhone and laptop, there was sadly little suspension of work. Home is a good place to be. At least for me it is. The issue of Ventana you’re holding goes to print in a couple of hours. Here, at home, I can think and write and chase that deadline. I can relax, even if I don’t know what color the curb is. MATT KATZ, EDITOR MattK@VentanaMonthly.com

HOW TO
The first step is finding a watertight container, one that will hold from 15 to 25 gallon and is at least 18 inches wide at the top and one and a half feet deep. Dark colors are recommended because they discourage algae growth and give an impression of depth. You can find a variety of suitable containers at local nurseries such as Green Thumb in Ventura. Some gardeners recycle kiddy pools, horse troughs, half barrels, big galvanized buckets, and even old bathtubs into serviceable water garden holders.
L O C AT I O N The next step is finding a sunny spot for your garden. Water gardens need four to six hours of direct sunlight a day. Flowering aquatic plants especially need lots of sun to blossom. Make sure that the surface you choose is level and can bear the weight of the water, which usually weighs in at eight to 10 pounds per gallon. If your plants are not flourishing in the first spot you choose for your garden, moving it to a sunnier spot might be the remedy. This, however, will require your emptying the water, removing the pots, and reassembling the garden in the new location. Try to keep your garden away from trees, as falling leaves and other debris could harm both plants and fish.
Put a Pond on Your Porch You don’t need a vast estate or infinite acreage to plant a water garden. Start small with a container on your porch, patio, or deck. Dave Nichols at Green Thumb Nursery in Ventura shows how it’s done.
BY CAROL DRISCOLL
WAT E R Fill the container with water and let it sit in the sun for 24 to 48 hours until the chlorine evaporates. After the initial filling, top the water every couple of days to replace evaporated water. No chemicals or water softeners should be added to the water. If you see algae in your water garden, remove the plants, empty the container, and refill it with fresh water.
POTTING PLANTS The pots for your water garden should be from 12 to 24 inches wide and 12 to 16 inches deep. Heavy clay garden soil free of chemicals and fertilizer is the best medium for aquatic plants, since commercial mixes are too lightweight for water garden plants. Pack the soil down tight. Water them and top the soil with a half to three quarters inch of pea gravel to weigh it down so it doesn’t drift into the container water.
TYPES OF PLANTS For an attractive garden you should choose submerged, emergent, and floater plants with an eye toward varying leaf length, shape, and color. Also look for both blossoming and non-flowering plants. Like an artist with an empty canvas, the idea is to create a fragrant, harmonious whole from the variety of plants you have chosen. 14

ASSEMBLING THE GARDEN Place submerged plants in the water and use bricks to elevate emergent plants to the correct height and depth. Floaters should be added last so you can keep them in scale with the rest of the plants in your container. Keep rearranging the plants until you get the desired effect, but do not crowd your container with plants. Use no more than 60 percent of your water garden surface for planting. When the plants start to grow, you will need to fertilize and trim them as needed and keep the container surface free of potentially harmful debris. Water plants are known to grow fast. You can limit their growth by keeping them in smaller pots.
FISH Wait until your plants are established (four to six weeks) before you add fish to your water garden. Guppies and minnows will survive in a small water garden, but you should have 20 gallons of water if you plan to add goldfish or Koi. Gambezi, black fish that feed on mosquito larvae and perform by flipping and jumping in the water, can thrive and even reproduce in your water garden. Get the fish accustomed to the garden by letting them drift in a water filled plastic bag on the surface for approximately 20 minutes. Fish will help to balance out the pond ecosystem because they feed on algae, insects, and their larvae and plants. It is not a good idea to feed them commercial fish food as it might decay in the water.

Your water garden plants can be grown indoors in water filled containers but they will still need lots of sun. Floating plants such as water hyacinths will need larger containers of water and will also need to be placed in a sunny spot indoors. The fish will need to be brought indoors and put in aquariums. Some gardeners, however, treat water garden plants as annuals and start over each year. With minimal supplies and lots of creativity, you can dive right into your water garden project! v For tips and supplies, visit Green Thumb International at 1899 Victoria St., Ventura. 805.642.8517, GreenThumb.com

Green Goes to the Dogs
Sit. Stay. Save the planet. Ventura-based land scape architect Stephanie Rubin and her artist husband, Chris Isner, put sustainability in the doghouse and teach us all a new trick.
BY MICHEL CICERO PHOTOS BY BRIANA CASH
Not long ago, sustainable living practices were met with some degree of suspicion from the general public. Recycling was seen as optional and composting was regarded as downright eccentric. But with inconvenient truths swarming like Africanized honey bees, green living has come into its own, and Ventura-based landscape architect Stephanie Rubin couldn't be more excited. For Rubin, sustainability is more than a buzzword; it's a lifestyle—one that is crucial to the future of humankind. On a recent visit to Rubin's studio, she apologized for the SUV parked in front. "I borrowed it to transport plants," she confessed. Normally, she drives a Mercedes that runs on used vegetable oil. When Rubin isn't puttering around in her garden or designing landscapes for trés trendy eco mansions, she is fabricating sustainable doghouses. Her pooch pads feature chemical-free materials, green roofs, and sleek, modern designs. But most important to Rubin, they are safe and comfy for deserving canines like her "purebred mutt," Gretyl. Rubin and her husband, Chris Isner, an internationally exhibited sculptor and painter, moved to Ventura from Oakland in January, but it already feels like home to them. Originally from the Los Angeles area, they returned to Southern California for better work opportunities. They recognized the quality of life Ventura had to offer, and proximity to Art City for sculpting material sealed the deal. She first conceptualized the doghouses—which have a patent pending—when one of her beloved dogs died from cancer. At the time, she was attending an ecology focused landscape architecture program at UC Berkeley, which helped fuel her curiosity about the connection between pollutants and her dog's illness. With Isner's artistic input, the first Greenrrroof Doghouse was created. Since then they have been featured in a number of respected publications, including Sunset, Metropolitan Home, and Dog Fancy. Not to be mistaken for rooftop gardens, green roofs are actually part of the structure they beautify. Green roofs have been in use for thousands of years, but were popularized by the Germans in the 1960s as a way to counteract problems of pollution and storm runoff. The use of green roofs to bring nature to otherwise urban areas has gained popularity in recent years. When planted en masse, green roofs have the ability to cool large cities by as much as 1020 degrees and mitigate street flooding through absorption. The city of Chicago boasts 2.5 million square feet of green roofing and has designated hefty grants to large-scale green roof projects. Doghouse green roofs are really no different than the ones made for people. The first step is to thoroughly waterproof the surface—Rubin uses natural beeswax. Next, drainage and filtration layers are put in place. She tops it off with her signature soil blend and an assortment of petfriendly, nonpoisonous native plants. Her husband applies his custom paint blends for a finishing touch. "It's like building a cake," she says. Sounds simple enough, but from start to finish the process is actually complicated, labor intensive, and not easily replicated. "We really want to make sure that our focus is SEPTEMBER 2008

making it healthy for the dogs and eco-friendly," she said. The end result is an uber hip shelter that won't make dogs sick, but will keep them insulated from heat, cold, and noise. "My dog will freak out over traffic noises,” said Rubin, "so it's really quite calm in there." Depending on size, Greenrrroof Dog Houses range in price from $2,000 to $6,000, and orders can be customized. Rubin travels great distances to hunt down green materials such as certified red cedar wood—a natural flea repellant—paint and sealer that's free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and an adequate selection of native plants. For central and southern California coastal regions, Rubin favors woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca), beach strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis), and stonecrop (Sedum). She also spends 60 to 90 days establishing the plants' root systems before the finished product is shipped to a customer. The importance of using native plants cannot be overstated. There are certain species of animals that depend on the plants native to their habitat for survival. If, for instance, the beetle population diminishes because the plants it feeds on are too scarce, then the birds that eat the beetles begin to disappear, and so on. Native vegetation also lends a sense of place. As Rubin says, "It helps keep places special.” Besides their visual appeal and superior insulating qualities, Rubin's green roof doghouses attract beneficial insects such as butterflies and ladybugs, which in turn attract birds. Rubin also has a line of green roof birdhouses, and plans are underway for green roof children's playhouses. Rubin and Isner offer a handful of playful, artistic doghouse designs such as the whimsical "Leaf House," which hints at Frank Lloyd Wright's renowned "Falling Water" masterpiece, and the "Goth Cathedral," with its eerie paint splattered interior. The "Dog Barn" is probably the most basic and versatile style, while the limited edition, graffiti covered "Andrew Jackass Plantation," made from 200-year-old Tennessee aromatic cedar from Andrew Jackson's estate, divulges the couple's eccentric side. All indicators point to an upward trend in green living, and Rubin couldn't be happier with the response so far to her doghouses. But she emphasizes the mission behind the style. She hopes the doghouses will inspire people to take it further: "If people can be educated by my dog houses and by me about what's eco-friendly and healthier, I think that's wonderful." v

& Beauty Imagine the perfect food for your skin fed transdermally. Stem cell treatments are the newest non-toxic way to turn back the hands of time. The cells are specifically formulated for the skin organ, allowing it to heal itself. Pores shrink back to the way they used to be, wrinkles and fine lines soften and rosacea can be controlled. The face actually regenerates its own cells deep in the dermis where healthy new cell turnover is taking place. Acne and past scarring can be significantly reduced, even older scars regenerate. The treatments are painless and performed topically. The cells are taken from the umbilical serum where all of life is generated. They are specifically targeted for the organ of choice, in this case the skin, and then cryogenically frozen at 300 degrees below Celsius

just like organs ready for transplantation. Although no medical claims can be made in this country as of yet, I personally have seen acne, rosacea, exema, psoriasis, and seborreah resolve rapidly. These treatments are also used on burn victims to help them to regrow their own skin and need less grafting procedures. Stem cells are so safe that they can be used on babies for cradle cap. They are also being used to cure cancer in Germany. Pancreatic and liver cancers are actually in remission and healing with the help of specifically targeted stem cells. I urge you to go to www.dnaskin.com to research more about the use of transdermal stem cells. Sincerely, Rac hel Row en

For the Love of Oysters Could a humble bivalve be the ultimate aphrodisiac? Local writer John Wilcock travels to Northern California’s Tomales Bay to filter out the truth.
w BY JOHN WILCOCK
When the ancient Romans teased each other about their sexual prowess, it’s a safe bet that oyster jokes were frequent. The juicy mollusk was believed to be an aphrodisiac then, just as many believe it to be today. As early as 97 B.C. a Roman praetor, Sergius Orata, was breeding oysters on Lucrine Lake, near Naples, and his neighbor Cicero was writing about them. As were Horace and Juvenal. The legend began with the Greek goddess Aphrodite who sprang from the sea on an oyster shell and promptly gave birth to Eros. Scientists offer a more prosaic explanation: the mollusk’s high content of the zinc required for the production of testosterone. Oyster farmer Terry Sawyer remains skeptical: “Maybe it works if you think it does,” he suggests. Sawyer with two other marine biologists was co-founder 25 years ago of the Hog Island Oyster Company, one of several in the Tomales Bay area. Thirty miles north of San Francisco, the Bay sits beside the captivating Point Reyes National Seashore, which draws two million visitors a year and is home to owls, foxes, raccoons, bobcats deer, herons, egrets, and ducks. The peninsula’s cool, moist climate is ideal for dairy ranching, and its farms, spread over 65,000 acres, have been shipping butter and cheese to San Francisco for more than a century. “The grass growing in the fields on Monday,” boasted the 1880 History of Marin County, “is butter on the city tables the following Sunday.” Hundreds of bird species nest among the dunes and in woods composed of both Douglas firs characteristic of northern California’s coast and Bishop pines, which are more typical of the southern part of the state. Wildflowers color the hillsides, and on the beaches in spring, elephant seal mothers nurse their pups. The headland on which the 1870 lighthouse sits claims to be the only place in the world where, in the early months of the year, you can sometimes watch passing whales and the basking elephant seals on a single visit.

Top: Point Reyes Lighthouse, oceanfront at the most exposed place on the California coast. Middle: Terry Sawyer of Hog Island Oyster Company in Tomales Bay. Bottom: Drakes Bay Oyster Company produces about half of the state’s oysters.
And just as the land is well suited to farming, so is the temperate water good for breeding oysters. Beyond the pretty town of Inverness, a side road near the lighthouse leads to Drakes Bay Oyster Farm, the only remaining company in California that still operates a cannery. Producing about half of the state’s oysters, it has been in business for 80 years, but has been ordered by the Point Reyes National Seashore to close in 2012 when the 40-year lease granted to the previous owners expires. A National Park Service report concluded the company presents “serious potential and real negative effects within Drakes Estero,” to which co-owner Nancy Lunny responds that their 20 million oysters are performing a service by filtering the estero’s waters from the effluent that pours in from the park’s ranches. A single oyster can filter 50 gallons a day, feeding from the plankton and detritus it sucks up while its mantle assists the shell to grow from lime in the water. When exposed to the air, a strong adductor clamps the shells shut, scant protection against such predators as bat rays, green crabs, and teredos, which can drill through this sheath. For that reason, most farmers grow their oysters in mesh bags hanging from racks in fairly shallow water, the gentle rocking of the waves and water temperatures below 40 degrees aiding their development.“It’s like planting corn because we plant in rows,” says Scott Yancy, “and just like in corn you have to weed them out, sort by size, and rebag them.” Yancy, who manages the Tomales Bay Oyster Company, lists the occasional red tide that sweeps into the Bay as the growers’ worst enemy.“It can wipe out the entire crop,” he says. For this reason, oysters are usually harvested before the warm weather. To the north, at tiny Marshall, the Hog Island Oyster Company ships three million oysters each year to restaurants and retailers around the country. There are CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

daily visitors, too, many carrying coolers for takeaway but some of whom pay a small fee to lunch at the picnic tables overlooking the bay. Sawyer, one of the partners, lifts up one of the containers from the constantly bubbling brine to show the thousands of seed oysters looking like fine gravel piled in the bottom. This seed, which comes from one of a trio of hatcheries in North America, is already several months old and matures for a few months more before being placed in sacks of fine mesh and hung in the bay. If all goes well, when the bags are harvested, not less than nine months later, they are fully grown. The female oyster is very prolific, releasing into the water millions of eggs, which are fertilized by the male. The fertilized eggs develop into larvae, which grow for a week or two until this wandering spat seeks out a place to settle, often on shells threaded onto hanging ropes but sometimes atop cultch (a pile of old oyster shells), emitting a glue to cement its left valve in place. “There’s safety in numbers,” says Terry Sawyer. “They form a reef, a structure, where they don’t get washed away and have a high chance of reproductive success.” Hog Island breeds many varieties of oyster, but a favorite is the exceptionally creamy Pacific, which originated in Japan. In Marshall, the popular Nick’s Cove & Cottages offers a comfortable place to stay and a restaurant where every table has a view. Another pleasant option is located back on the highway in the one-street town of Tomales, where the nine-room Continental Inn was recently built to replicate (with updated facilities) the original turn-of-the-century hotel that stood as the cornerstone of this picturesque community. Back in the 1850s, according to historians, the hotel was the town’s center of activity, its ballroom hosting dances and public meetings and on its steps a Sunday afternoon gathering to watch running, jumping, and wrestling contests, with an occasional horse race on the adjoining highway. These days, of course, cars are more common than horses. But the charm remains. v

THE FINAL WORD After reading about an Australian grower who was feeding his oysters Viagra to make them more potent aphrodisiacs, Louisiana oyster farmer Mike Voisin sent five dozen of his finest to Tony Abbott, the minister of that country’s Department of Health and Aging.“I don’t know what’s wrong with the oysters in Australia,”he wrote,“but Louisiana oysters are an all-natural aphrodisiac, the gold standard, and I can ship five dozen of them to anywhere in the world for less than [the cost of Viagra].Hell, I’ll even throw in a bottle of Tabasco.” 32

Design Potential: Barn Living in Somis Inter ior designer Gail C laridge tips her hat t o a lo cal region’s equine tradition, creating a livable space wher e once only horses slept.
T
BY MAXINE HURT PHOTOS BY MARK LOHMAN
The beauty of space, especially empty space, lies in its innate potential. The boundaries of creation are limitless—the painter’s empty canvas and the composer’s blank page are potential masterworks. But what about the creator who, rather than making something out of nothing, jumps hurdles to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary? Consider the trainer who turned an undersized, knobby-kneed horse into a champion thoroughbred. Or Gail Claridge, the Somis-based interior designer who molded a dilapidated barn into an elegant home. Country Meadow Ranch, a 45-acre estate in Somis, features a 3,000-squarefoot barn-inspired main house, two guest cottages, an old smoke house imported from Kentucky, a yesteryears filling station, and a carriage house. The main house was created from a horse barn originally erected in 1949. When Claridge and her husband arrived at the property almost 10 years ago, the home did not exist. Gail had to do what she does best: envision what could be and then work backwards from there. She decided that what once housed horses could be artfully converted into

a home for her and her family. “The funny thing is, I don’t know the first thing about horses,” says Claridge, who made it her business to learn about barns in order to pay homage to the original style and architecture. Instead of gutting the place and filling it with modern conveniences, she took a more committed approach. “I didn’t want to make [the ranch buildings] something they weren’t; Beverly Hills, they ain’t,” she says with a frank nod. The house consists of a living room, kitchen, pantry, dining room, master bedroom and bathroom, family room, and guest bedroom with another full bath. But in 1949, when the inhabitants ate hay and slept standing up, the layout was slightly different. The living room consisted of three stalls. The dining room was a birthing stall. The kitchen was the vet’s room, and the master bedroom was the tack room. The door leading into the master bathroom is in fact a sliding stall door, as are the entrances to the family room, guest bedroom, and master bedroom. Claridge, a grandmother of six and a mother of three, (including Hulk Hogan’s ex-wife Linda Hogan), slides open a stall door and closes it behind her. “The grandkids will make me stand in here, and I have to
eat bread and water,” she says, her perfectly coifed red curls shimmying as she chuckles. Each room showcases a selective array of antiques and fine furnishings hand-picked by Claridge. The living room features a massive reproduction double secretary made of 100-year-old aged walnut. Kenny Rogers originally commissioned the piece, but when deliverymen dropped the bottom half he had it returned to the maker. Claridge, with luck perhaps gained from the many horseshoes adorning her home, stumbled upon the secretary and put it on layaway for two years. The piece includes a hand-painted scene of the seaport in England and a collection of Staffordshire ceramic pottery. Claridge points out one her favorite items in the home: a somewhat surreal collection of antique English horse hooves (real ones) from prized horses that died and were commemorated through the creation of hand-crafted home accessories. One hoof, which includes sterling silver plating, was formed into a match striker with the words “1892 Abilonga” engraved on the surface. Gail finds items such as these at antique stores, estate sales, and local antique shows. “These are things people had to make, preTV,” she says. “Here I am enjoying something that took hours, months, years…” The kitchen features a 19th century Superior stove with a retrofitted cook top. There are bar stools fashioned out of tractor seats, and a deceptively appetizing apple pie rests on the counter top. I have to walk by it twice before realizing it’s a replica.
Inside and out, Gail Claridge's Country Meadow Ranch in Somis sticks to the classic style of the American barn: rugged and knotty, with an healthy dose of bucolic romance.
With Olympian vision and unbridled creativity, she made an old space that had been put out to pasture into a livable home that surmounted its original purpose. SEPTEMBER 2008

The brick flooring and high, beamed ceilings within the home create continuity and a sense of boundless space. The family room incorporates a wall-to-wall hand-woven rug made from men’s wool suits and two American flags with 48 stars for window treatments. The fax machine in the corner momentarily jolts me out of my “times of yore” reverie and catapults me back to the 21st century, but the glass framed silks worn by Seabiscuit’s jockey during the famous Pimlico Special of 1938 immediately returns me to the past. (The famous horse once lived at a nearby ranch.) A collection of equine-inspired items including riding boots, antique boot cleaners, boot spurs, riding crops, riding saddles gracefully draped over the ceilings wood beams, and polo mallets can be found throughout the home. Other pieces that evoke the past include walking sticks, rifles, tobacco jars, antique books, and an array of handcrafted items that make up the owner’s prized purse. The home, with its collection of antiques and authentic handcrafted items, is worthy of a movie set. But the closest thing to an actual horse on the ranch is a small play horse that the grandkids mount while wearing a jockey hat and wielding a riding whip. “I’m making memories for them,” says Claridge. “They will never forget Grandma’s ranch.” Perhaps one of the most fascinating antique pieces resides in the guest bathroom. Claridge calls the marble-topped piece a “rich man’s pitcher and bowl,” an early form of plumbing that involved a maid filling a tank with water and emptying the basin after use. The bathroom, the only room in the house not originally part of the barn, is perhaps most reflective of the home’s creator. The room includes a television, phone, and vanity where Claridge can apply her makeup, watch the news, and call in to check on her two stores in Westlake Village. When Gail Claridge first saw Country Meadow Ranch, she had a vision: “My theory coming in here was, this is a great American barn—an old, rugged, wooden, knotty pine barn.” With Olympian vision and unbridled creativity, she made an old space that had been put out to pasture into a livable home that surmounted its original purpose. “It’s like trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear— and I do that all the time.” v

PERSONALITY Color specialist Cathleen Smith, dressed to match the cool tones of a soaking tub in the Ventura hills.
The New Hue
Ojai’s Cathleen Smith and the psycholo gy of color.
BY DEWITT SMITH PHOTOS BY GARY AND PIERRE SILVA
C
Cathleen Smith definitely does not see things in black and white. This is, after all, a woman who lives out loud and has created a career in living color. Meet the color specialist. And she’s a far cry from the little girl who grew up in a spare-looking house in San Jose. “Every wall was white, we had a brown sofa and a brown crucifix as the sole wall ornament,” Smith recalls about her home where she was the first of 10 children. But she had two big pluses going for her: her love of color and a father who encouraged her to be artistic. Even though the family lived modestly, “We always had paper and crayons,” she says. It wasn’t until her sophomore year in a Catholic girls high school that she got to take art classes. “I would finish my projects late at night, and my father would get up and have a cup of tea and critique [them]. He was the Irish dreamer who also encouraged me to live my life and to think outside the box.” And that she did. Her college career was at a series of schools—ending at UC Santa Barbara after she was married and living in Ojai. This is where she started her work career, art jobs ranging from teaching to designing tiles. Between the babies and a startup business, she also studied space planning: a study of the human body and how it operates in space, such as the optimum and minimum space you need to move through your environment. “I’m working on a kitchen design now,” she explains. “From the counter top to the island you want four feet, the optimum space, to pull down the dishwasher door.” When Smith and I had tea at an outdoor café in Ojai, I met a petite woman brimming with life. She paints pictures with words—vivid words that flow easily from one connected subject to another. She was talking about some of the synchronistic moments in her life, like the time she was pulling a book off the shelf at Waldenbooks in Ventura and the man standing next to her said, “I wrote that book.” Thinking it was a pickup line from some older guy, she asked to see his driver’s license. It was, in fact, the author. After a quick apology, she struck up a conversation with Dr. Max Luscher, a noted Swiss psychologist who was an expert on color. His book, “The 4-Color Person,” is still one of the bibles for marketing and packaging. Smith ended up going to Switzerland to study with him for about a month in 1980, and it put her squarely on the path of color.

Later that decade, while she was teaching art, she met a developer in Ojai who had just finished some houses and needed someone to choose interior colors. She did the first job for free, and he loved the results. When he had a party to show off the houses, he invited Smith. “The next day I had four jobs in Ojai,” says Smith. That free job 20 years ago paid off big—it marked the start of her own business. Ever since, Smith has been in such demand that she’s never once advertised. “It’s all been word of mouth,” she says. “I’ve worked as far south as Cabo San Lucas, as far north as the Bay Area, and as far east as Atlanta, Georgia.” These days, Smith prefers to work closer home in Ventura County. It’s a luxury she worked hard for, and part of that work came from studying with the color master, Max Luscher. “I didn’t learn about the aesthetics of color from him. I learned about the psychology of color, and how color influences to create a certain feeling,” she explains. The psychology of color is fascinating, but the practicality of getting what you see in your head onto a wall takes a bit of magic—and a lot of know-how. Once again, Smith found that person who would become her ally: John Nelson, the owner of Décor Paint & Wallcovering in Thousand Oaks. Nelson, who’s been in the paint business for 30 years, has been working with SEPTEMBER 2008
Smith for half that time. They met when she was doing a job in Westlake Village and needed some more paint. “He has a wonderful selection of finishing products, and I can always find the specialty paints I’m looking for,” she says. “I also have a great relationship with Frontier Paint in Ojai. They keep color formulas on file for me, and Louie is probably the best color matcher I’ve ever seen. How paint is mixed either makes or breaks me; I’m in trouble if it’s not a good match.” In the matter of matching, most people decide on a color and then decorate. John Nelson says it should be the other way around: “Bring me a floor sample, a window treatment, the fabrics, and then pick the colors that go with them.” But selecting a color can be dizzying when there are over 5,000 to choose from. That’s why there are color specialists. “Cathy has a color in her head, and her color vision is very good. It’s finding the intangibles that pull it all together,” Nelson says. Over the years, Smith has pulled it together for a lot of clients, among them Norman Flam and Ellen Israel, who live in a contemporary home in the hills of Ventura. “She knew my style,” says Israel, explaining how Smith created the red and black Mondrian theme she wanted for her bathroom—at a fraction of the cost. Throughout the house, Smith’s unique color combinations enliven spaces. As Israel puts it, “I never could have thought
of the colors she used.” Another local homeowner, Cathy Schneir of Santa Paula, got the full Smith treatment last year. “I’ll never live with white walls again,” says Schneir, 57. “Cathy doesn’t design to her taste; she designs to her client’s taste. She made this place so warm, and that’s what I wanted: a warm family home that was going to be comfortable for children and grandchildren.” So how, exactly, does Smith come up with a color? “I start out with an idea, and sometimes I pull colors out and start playing with them. And I might have 50 colors, and then something clicks in my brain. It’s the aha moment, and then everything tumbles into place,” she says. “When I say tumbles, there’s an actual sensation like a deck of cards falling in place.” It’s the secret of her trade—color tumbling, something only she and her brain understand. One final question: Does she dream in color? Of course she does! Cathleen Smith lives a colorful life, awake or asleep. v
Smith selected paints, tiles, and stone to balance Ellen Israel's fondness of primary colors. "She knew my style," says Israel, shown at right in a Mondrianthemed bathroom in the contemporary home she shares with Norman Flam.

Our homes can pollute the air we breathe and the water we drink, without our knowledge. The simple steps of creating a healthy home are some of the easiest ways we can also be “ecofriendly” to the earth. Gayel uses paint to express her feelings as one would use words for writing poetry.
