A beloved highlight of summertime dining in Ventura County is eating the fresh, juicy tomatoes grown at Boccali’s restaurant’s Ojai farm, topping off delicious pizzas and salads. Owner DeWayne Boccali says that as soon as the weather gets warm in the late spring, people start calling to see if the fruit of his labor is in season yet. “People really appreciate it when we have the tomatoes,” says Boccali. “When I harvest them, I realize this is really something special and it’s worth doing.” The effort to grow some of the food they serve is an example Continued on Page 8

of a growing trend that goes beyond restaurants just buying produce from local farms. Tomatoes are one of many crops grown at Boccali’s farm which also include eggplant, peppers, basil and grapes to make their own wine. Lemons are squeezed for lemonade they serve year-round. Boccali says the hard work performed on their farm is evident as soon as customers sip the lemonade. “The thing about the lemonade is, when you buy lemons in the store, they’re always picked and stored,” says Boccali. “But with our lemons, we pick them today and use them tomorrow. So they’re really fresh, and they just taste different.” Ojai Valley Inn and Spa Executive Chef Chad Minton is also devoted to growing food used in his creations. He serves unique dishes in the resort’s signature restaurant, Maravilla, and the spa’s Café Verde, using vegetables and herbs grown in gardens on site. “We’re doing a beautiful lavender pound cake,” says Minton. “All of the herbs are infused, garnished or somehow incorporated into virtually all of our menus.” Minton says part of his motivation is environmental. “It limits our Continued on Page 10

With the growing nightlife scene here in Ventura, one does not have to look too far past Main Street to find that Ventura does elixirs well — the food and fluid scene is on the increase, and for good reason; we are not lacking in quality or variety. If you’re looking for the perfect blend of traditional sophistication and culture, The Watermark on Main is a favored spot. Owners Mark and Kathy Hartley have successfully created a restaurant/bar that reflects the old and the new. Ventura local Peter Forster admits that Watermark is a regular habit because of the atmosphere, the people, the food, the drinks and the live music. “Truthfully, Watermark spearheaded a cultural awakening here in Ventura,” Forster said. “It feels like Santa Barbara in the ’80s.” Operations manager John Giammanco hails from the Monterey Peninsula, and he has been working in bartending management for more than eight years. “Most of our business is from regular customers, and we sell more wine here than any other place I’ve ever worked,” Giammanco said. “Yeah, we go through a ton of wine, red being the top seller and, depending on the weather, chardonnay is also popular.” While Watermark sells a ton of wine, it also sells a lot of martinis, with the top three sellers being: lemon drops, dirty martinis and cosmopolitans. In The W2O Lounge upstairs, the blue martini is a big seller. Right across the street is Dargan’s Irish Pub and Restaurant — another Ventura favorite. “At the bar, we see a lot of regulars. A variety of cupcakes from Sweet Arleen’s in Thousand Oaks

Local bakers share what’s new in indulgent treats by allison costa

With the recent closing of two of the county’s cupcake shops (Sugar Bears in Ventura and The Cupcakery in Thousand Oaks), one might start to wonder if the love of cupcakes was just a passing trend. Not so, says Arleen Scavone, owner of Sweet Arleen’s in Westlake Village/ Thousand Oaks. “Everyday, I think people are loving cupcakes more,” she said. A two-time winner of the hit show Cupcake Wars, Scavone says customers come to her store “Because it’s not just a cupcake, it’s an experience,” though she does find that people now have a more discerning palate, especially when paying anywhere from $3 to $5 for the tiny cakes. While cupcakes are her mainstay, her bread puddings are gaining popularity. Sweet flavors like dulce de leche and french toast are complemented by more unusual savory flavors like maple bacon, macaroni and cheese, and spinach artichoke. (In the place of Sugar Bears Cupcake Shack, Sweet Stuff Confections will open at 451 E. Main St. Flavors include cheesecake cupcake, red velvet cupcake and sweet potato pecan cupcake.) Another baker betting on these sweet little cakes is Angelica Terrazas, the 19-yearold owner of Scrumdiddly Dollops on 110 N. 10th Street in Santa Paula. Her shop offers 15 flavors of cupcakes each day, often selling out before the end of the day in the weeks since the shop’s opening. When asked about the state of the cupcake trend, she says, “I think people stopped putting quality into cupcakes; that is where some bakers failed.” In addition to her cupcakes, Dollop (as she is known around the store) also makes cake pops, a treat fairly new to the sweets scene. While some may think the cake pop trend is here to supersede cupcakes (they are available at all Starbucks stores, after all), Terrazas explains that her cupcakes are much more popular. Shannon Wright, owner of Marie Shannon Confections in Ventura, is also seeing more of an interest in savory pastries, like her caramelized onion goat cheese empanadas and her artisan cheese and dried-fruit tart. When asked about this recent upswing in requests for savory treats, Wright says, “People seem to have a more adventurous palate.” Whatever your take, if you’re a cupcake lover or a cake pop fan, it seems that cupcakes are here to stay. Bobbi Corbin, of Ojai’s Knead Baking Company, says, “Though they aren’t as trendy as they used to be, cupcakes are one of those classics. … They have universal appeal.” They may have to move over, though, and make room for some savory friends in the pastry case.
