Tiny Santa Barbara Island a refuge for wildlife and humans STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHUCK GRAHAM

I

t could’ve been a saltwater fire hydrant, a consistent south swell repeatedly punishing an exposed air pocket on a wave-battered bluff located on the south side of tiny, windswept Santa Barbara Island. CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

TRANQUIL: Kayaking near the coastal bluffs of Santa Barbara Island.

| Ventura County Summer Guide | 2014 | 11

Every time a wave washed through, the air pocket filled up with water, spewing skyward where California sea lions reveled in the southerly pulse. I watched intently from my kayak as sea lion juveniles and pups resembled children playing in the sprinklers on a hot summer day. They were also all around me, hundreds of playful sea lions torpedoing toward my kayak with slap happy flippers splashing off my bow. Brandt’s cormorants and western gulls shared the gritty bluffs with the rambunctious pinnipeds, putting up with their cacophony of barks and bellows carrying along the entire southern end of the islet. Santa Barbara Island might be the smallest isle off the California coast and in the Channel Islands National Park, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for as a remote summer retreat bursting with breathtaking scenery, raucous seal and sea lion rookeries, epic ocean kayaking through toothy sea grottos and arches, and hiking among sea and land birds on lonely trails. After hiking, wash off the trail dust by snorkeling in the Landing Cove, the only public access point on the 1-square-mile isle. After all, half the national park is underwater where the boundary extends a mile out and around all five islands in the park.

Located about 38 miles off the northern Malibu coast, Santa Barbara Island is a mere dot on the map, but a two-night, three-day excursion out to this craggy islet allows complete immersion for all this island has to offer. The hiking is easy to moderate and leads to many scenic overlooks where sea lions and northern elephant seals haul out on rocky beaches. Don’t be surprised to see young sea lions basking in the sun on the broad backs of some of the elephant seals. Santa Barbara Island is one of the largest California brown pelican and western gull nesting sites on the entire West Coast of the U.S. The kayaking is world class, and there’s nothing like snorkeling with curious sea lions just off the Landing Cove. CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

WILDLIFE: TOP: Santa Barbara Island is home to one of the largest California brown pelican nesting sites on the West Coast. ABOVE: Sea lions sun themselves on the craggy coast.

GOOD WORKS

GREAT SUMMER

Volunteer opportunities abound for the whole family BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER

H

ere’s a good way to fill the kids’ days during summer break: Have them lend a hand for a good cause. Ventura County has lots of organizations in need of volunteers of all ages, and many of them promise as much fun as work. Volunteering is as good for the giver as the recipient. Besides a sense of satisfaction and pride from helping others, many volunteers enjoy interacting with new people, doing something outside their normal experience and learning new skills. And, as Colleen Janseen of the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District explains, volunteering is great for networking. “If you’re applying for a job, college or a scholarship, volunteer organizations make fantastic references,” she said. The district offers several activities, including an extensive program for people with disabilities, community classes (covering everything from sports to cooking to art and science) and a summer camp program — all in need of helping hands age12 and older. Tech-savvy kids inspired the Total Technology series, in which teens teach seniors how to use their cell phones, laptops and tablets.

Outdoorsy types might be more drawn to the iCan Shine Bike Camp July 7-11 in Camarillo, which needs volunteers ages 13 and older to help teach people with special needs to ride bikes. There’s also Ride On Therapeutic Horsemanship, which has sites in Newbury Park and Chatsworth and teaches adaptive horseback riding to children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities and also offers equinebased physical and occupational therapy. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old, but no experience is required. In Ojai, children as young as 11 can help California Coastal Horse Rescue muck pens, fill water buckets, walk horses, etc. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

“The people who come here just love the company of horses,” said Adri Howe of California Coastal Horse Rescue. “It’s very peaceful and almost therapeutic to be around them.” Both horse facilities have a variety of tasks that need to be done around the property, and the entire family is encouraged to pitch in — a great way to spend quality time together and show by example the importance of community involvement. Community Roots Garden in Oxnard is another organization that has the whole family in mind. People of all ages are invited to help plant, weed, prepare beds, harvest and even cook with fresh, healthy produce picked straight from the garden. The goal is to teach people about organic gardening and healthy living, and for volunteer CONTINUED ON PAGE 26
