CREATIVE CONUNDRUMS
A
friend once told me that the purpose of art is to pose a question. That may not be universally true — and as I am not an artist myself, I feel unqualified to debate the point. But as an observer, at least, I think it is not inaccurate to think of art as, among other things, a tool of inquiry. And certainly, most of the artists we feature in this month’s Arts Issue are seeking answers through their work. Vanessa Wallace-Gonzales, subject of our cover story, is very open about that fact. “I’m exploring myself and my identity and where things originate from,” she says. Aiding her in this search are the “mythic” beings she has created out of paper, paint and found objects. Her creative cosmology is a visual speculation on what it would be like to have our internal selves made external, with all our faults, vulnerabilities, hidden depths and strengths on display for all to see. It’s a very personal quest, but she’s also hinting at something universal and, perhaps, divine; elements that act as a code to decipher the nature of humanity itself. Where Wallace-Gonzales looks inward, Luke Matjas turns his gaze outward — quite literally. An avid hiker and ultrarunner, the outdoors are his greatest source of inspiration, and threats to the natural environment pose a quandary he confronts in his highly detailed, large-scale

paintings. Human civilization and the environment collide on Matjas’ canvas, with jarring, surprising and sometimes humorous results. What kind of planet, he seems to ask, will arise from the faceoff between the manmade and the naturally occurring — and how will the new world order come into balance? For Jean Larrivée, founder of Larrivée Guitars, there was no question about a superior product. He knows that answer lies in a commitment to quality, and great care in every step of an instrument’s construction. His conundrum was trying to stay viable in a world increasingly dominated by mammoth competitors churning out mass volume of product in overseas factories. The solution so far: Keep the work in house, and stay the course with exceptional craftsmanship. Larrivée isn’t interested in making the most guitars, just the best, and that guiding principle has allowed the Oxnard company to maintain its integrity and economic health for over 50 years. The hidden depths of the self, the state of the planet, old-fashioned ideals in a new economic reality — there’s enough there to keep anyone awake at night. Facing those Questions-with-a-Capital-Q takes courage, and attempting to answer them is a brave endeavor indeed. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

On Sept. 12, Limoneira celebrated more than a century of growing world-class citrus with an afternoon event held at its ranch in Santa Paula. Guests mingled in the rustically elegant setting and enjoyed cocktails, appetizers and a three-course buffet, along with the dulcet tones of noted crooner Luca Ellis. But the highlights, perhaps, were the chance to bowl on the famous bocce ball courts and sample cuisine featuring the company’s renowned produce, including Limoneira lemon bars and lemon meringue tarts. 1. Artistry, craftsmanship and a family passion for quality are the ties that bind at Larrivée Guitars. BY MIKE NELSON | PHOTOGRAPY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN
For all its attributes — climate, beaches, strawberries — Oxnard has never been known as Musicland USA.
THREE OF A KIND: Jean Larrivée (center) with his sons, John Jr. (left) and Matthew together maintain the Larrivée reputation for exceptional instruments of incomparable sound and long-lasting quality.
So it would no doubt surprise many locals to step into a warehouse in the city’s }} industrial region and find themselves smack in the midst of one of the world’s most respected guitar manufacturers. And to find the company’s founder, owner and chief guitar-maker — a friendly, soft-spoken, ponytailed member of the septuagenarian set — hard at work, cutting and sanding and covered in sawdust, just as he was more than 50 OCTOBER 2018

years ago when he began this business. That would be Jean Larrivée, the Quebec-born mechanic-turned-luthier (a.k.a stringed instrument maker) whose Larrivée Guitars have been played by recording artists Peter Yarrow, Brad Paisley, Michelle Wright, Bruce Cockburn, Kelsea Ballerini and more. A Larrivée acoustic was even played aboard the International Space Station in 2013 by astronaut Chris Hadfield in his rendition of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” But neither worldwide nor out-of-this-world fame has ever been the motivating factor for Jean Larrivée, whose graying hair belies his eternally youthful love and passion for his art. “I never wanted to build or sell the most guitars,” he says with a quiet smile. “Only the best.” Such passion drives Jean on a never-ending worldwide search for forests — in Canada, Europe, India, the South Pacific, South America, you name it — for the best wood to use in making, in his words, “high-end guitars at an affordable price. That has always been our mission.” It’s a mission that involves family. Jean’s wife, Wendy, one of the first designers of intricate inlays for Larrivée guitars, is still active in the company, as are sons John Jr. and Matthew, who bring a combination of gifts — musical artistry, business sense, technical expertise — to the enterprise as general managers. “We’re all very passionate about what we do,” says John Jr. “I grew up as a musician, playing drums and guitar; my brother is a tech junkie who grew up in the computer age; and Mom is an artist who loves inlays and engraving. We can express ourselves any way we want, and together it lends itself to the success of our company.”
FROM CANADA TO CALIFORNIA Fittingly, it was a family enterprise that fueled Jean’s own passion and, ultimately, his life’s work. That was in the 1960s, when young Jean — enamored of classical guitar amidst a burgeoning folk-rock music scene — saw a performance in Toronto by noted guitarist Edgar Munch Jr. and met the performer’s father, renowned German luthier Edgar Munch Sr. So impressed was the elder Munch by Larrivée’s interest in classical guitar making that he took young Jean on as an apprentice. Working in a basement, Larrivée made steelstring guitars and developed a unique “X-bracing” system that became the key to the signature Larrivée tone — a technique still used by leading guitar makers around the world. Within a short time Larrivée recruited a host of artists who helped design his guitars, among them Wendy Jones, who created many of the intricate

inlays on Larrivée guitars (and, not incidentally, became Jean’s wife). In 1977, with Yarrow and Cockbrun leading a parade of artists from the U.S. and Canada who were turned on to Larrivée guitars, the company moved to Victoria and later Vancouver for better access to Sitka spruce, which was, and remains, a primary component in Larrivée guitars. As he scoured the forests of Vancouver Island for the most suitable wood, Jean also developed new machinery and tools to produce better-sounding instruments. But in the early 1980s, the acoustic market was slammed by the influx of electronic keyboards and guitars as flashy heavy metal and “computer” rock began to flourish. Undeterred, Jean simply adapted, building high-end electric guitars for his and other companies (including Kramer, Schon and Signature). The MTV/Eric Clapton-led “Unplugged” movement in the early 1990s led to a resurgence of acoustic guitars, and Larrivée stepped up production as Jean expanded his search for the best wood overseas. That led to production of the first made-in-North America, all-solid-wood, high-end guitar for under $800, the D-03, which became the workhorse for the Larrivée company and players alike. In September 2001, desiring to be closer to the firm’s growing number of U.S. customers, Larrivée opened a production facility in southeast Oxnard that made Larrivée glossy guitars, while satin-finish guitars continued to be made in Canada. Jean and younger son Matthew headed California operations, and elder son John Jr. managed the Canadian facility. Sales flourished — until the worldwide economic downturn of 2008. By 2013, it became necessary for Larrivée to close its Vancouver plant and move everything to Oxnard. “And that was painful,” admits John, “given our ties to Canada. Those will always be meaningful to us — but we are also proud to be in California.”
FAMILY TIES Now firmly ensconced in Oxnard, Larrivée continues to produce high-end acoustic guitars that are repeatedly well-received. Marketing those guitars via the Internet, however, and in fewer stores where buyers can see, touch and hear them played, presents challenges. “It’s not like pre-2008,” John Jr. notes. “You have fewer brick-and-mortar music stores who are not carrying as much inventory; buyers are not buying on credit; the middle class is declining; Asian companies are pounding the market with cheaper copies; and younger kids want to play video games instead of becoming rock stars” — he laughs — “like I once did.” }}
ABOVE: Wood is sourced from all over the world, but Larrivée guitars are made exclusively in the Oxnard factory, and much of the construction process is still carried out by hand. A set of nearly finished guitars await their finishing touches — strings and tuners — before being prepared for shipment. LEFT: Lilly Hernandez finishes sanding a guitar body.

On the other hand, Guitar World Magazine recently reported that the acoustic and electric guitar manufacturing industry has experienced “solid, sustained growth” over the last five years. And the National Association of Music Merchants says guitar sales have risen 28 percent over the last 10 years. “We’ve seen the market soften before and then come back,” John Jr. says. “It always will, as long as there is desire for music and great guitars. And we are coming around the next corner.” It helps, he adds, to be “a smaller, family-run operation that doesn’t answer to corporate shareholders, so we can adapt pretty quickly to changes and needs in the market.” Today, Larrivée produces between 2,000 and 3,000 acoustic guitars a year from its climate-controlled, 12,000-square-foot headquarters. All instruments are handcrafted from wood that either the founder himself or his eldest son has personally inspected. “All of our guitars are solid wood — no laminates, no layered woods, no plys,” says John Jr. “We’ll use spruce and maple from Canada, walnut and maple from the U.S., ebony and mahogany from Africa, rosewood and silver oak from India, koa from Hawaii, and more.” And Jean will go through 10,000 sets of one variety to find the best 1,000, or the best 100, or the best 10 — an awful lot of work for a few guitars, but essential. “If your name is on that guitar, you’re gonna pay attention to it,” he says firmly. “When you buy a Larrivée guitar, you’re buying a legacy, built by a family, not just individual workers. And my whole family is involved in construction of each guitar in one form or another.” Even his pre-teen grandson, he smiles, likes to drive the forklift truck, which means another generation of Larrivées is becoming involved. “Larrivées will always have their hands on the guitars,” says Jean. “We’re not office people. We’re people that work with our hands directly on the guitar. One day you’re the CEO, the next day you’re sanding bodies. That’s what a real family business is, and it is a great feeling to know my children will take over and produce guitars for generations to come.” Not that he will ever retire. “I’m still in very good condition,” he says with a big smile. “I don’t sit in my office. I walk up and down the shop 100 times a day, and if someone needs this cut or that sanded, that’s what I do. Now when I get to be 80, I’m probably not gonna want to be behind a bandsaw cutting wood. But as long as I can contribute, I will be here.” Because no matter what happens in the world, says Jean, “There will always be music. And if it’s not from the guitar as we know it today, it will be a new design that maybe we will come up with. But the guitar will never go away. I wouldn’t spend a lifetime working, designing, perfecting them the best I can, and involving my entire family, if it was something I thought would no longer be with us. The popularity of the guitar has had its ups and downs — but it always comes back.” v Larrivée Guitars can be found locally at Guitar 48 (www.guitar48.com) in downtown Ventura. OCTOBER 2018
THE ART OF SOUND: Larrivée celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017 with a limited-edition anniversary model of the LV-10. Made from Indian rosewood, European alpine, mahogany and ebony woods, it featured an elaborate inlay that consisted of an intricate 50th Anniversary design and the “Impossible” Knot on the fingerboard.
THE WILLIE WATSON SIGNATURE SERIES One of the things that sets Larrivée guitars apart is their handcrafted quality, which has earned the brand the respect of musicians such as Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary fame), Grammy-nominated country star Kelsea Ballerini and Jeff Douglas of the Oak Ridge Boys. For folk singer Willie Watson, a deep appreciation for Larrivée has led to a creative collaboration with the renowned luthier. The founding member of the Old Crow Medicine Show got his first Larrivée in 2001: an acoustic OM-03 that he got in 2001 and played extensively. “Old Crow Medicine Show had a habit of driving over instrument cases,” Watson says with a chuckle. During a 2005 tour, the van backed up on his OM-03, and he found himself on the road with no guitar. He went shopping at a small guitar store in Nashville, where he came across the OM-01. It was a spare thing: no binding, no trim, no inlays, not even any fret markers. But the sound quality belied its simplicity. “I loved it,” Watson recalls. “It’s loud but has more of a clarity to the lower notes. Old-time music tends to have base runs on the lower notes, and [the OM-01] gives a dry, punchy, clear sound. It makes a very balanced and even sound. It’s able to give those base runs a character all their own. It sounds close to those old recordings.” John Larrivée Jr., the founder’s son, is a fan of Watson’s music, and reached out to him a few years ago about a potential collaboration. The singer/songwriter was excited to take part. “It’s a well-known guitar company, for sure,” he says. “Everything is made in smaller
batches — that much more care goes into each guitar. They’re putting more love into each aspect of each guitar. They care about the wood they’re using. They’re just doing a fantastic job.” The OM-01 went out of production some years ago, but has come out of retirement, so to speak, as the recently released, limitededition Willie Watson Signature Reissue. The series features African Khaya mahogany back, sides and neck, and a top made from Sitka spruce sourced from British Columbia. The body and fingerboard binding are Eastern maple, with an African ebony fingerboard and bridge. Only 18 will be available for purchase, and each will come with Larrivée-branded leather items — a strap, a field notebook and a small accessory bag — precision handmade by Koch Leather. Also included will be CDs of Watson’s critically-acclaimed Folk Singer Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. albums, a signed poster and a certificate of authenticity. Watson played every OM-01 reissue before selecting one for himself and is impressed by the series’ exceptional tone and construction. He’s looking forward to debuting it onstage. But he admits that his original OM-01 will always “be the one that I pick up first.” “A guitar gets better with age,” Watson says. “The more the wood ages and the more you play it, the better it sounds.” For information on price and availability of the OM-01 Willie Watson Signature Reissue, visit www.williewatson.com.

TOP BRASS New West Symphony Principal Horn James Thatcher makes music in and out of the orchestra pit. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK PHOTOGRAPHY BY KENNY BACKER
J
ames Thatcher is a musician who counts his blessings. Taking the path of “professional musician” is not necessarily the easiest road in life — especially if you have a large family to feed. Thanks to a successful career as the premier French horn player in Hollywood studios, a favorite to such noted composers as John Williams (for some 35 years on over 60 projects, including Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List and Amistad) and James Horner (Field of Dreams, Titanic, Avatar) and as a frequent performer with many symphony orchestras, Thatcher continues to enjoy a well-earned, enviable musical career that spans some 3,000 recordings and has garnered significant respect among his peers. The horn player dubbed “Satchmo” by fellow studio musicians (his email sobriquet is “tatchmo” since Satchmo was taken) is also principal horn for New West Symphony, whose season opens this month. Now based in La Cañada /Flintridge, the 67-year-old married father of five and grandfather to 14 grew up in Whittier, where his mom was an organist and educator and his father a choral teacher. Noting how tired his dad was at day’s end steered the budding musician away from music education and }}

into the less stable path of “professional musician.” His musical studies began on piano. He switched to horn when he was 13 or 14, figuring that would be a less competitive instrument. “There are millions of pianists in the world and so many great pianists, but not that many great horn players,” he said. When his parents noticed their 16-year-old son “getting too cozy” with a girlfriend, they sent him off to Mexico City to study with his uncle, Gerald Thatcher, a conductor and first horn with the Mexico City Orchestra. He went on to study at Brigham Young University (yes, he’s Mormon) and performed with the Utah Symphony. On his way to the University of Southern California for his master’s, Thatcher and his new bride took a detour to Phoenix for a job with that city’s symphony orchestra. After a few years, the couple moved to L.A., where he was hired by the L.A. Philharmonic and soon after launched what would become his studio career. “I had two great teachers in LA.,” said Thatcher, “Fred Fox, who is now 104 years old; and a great studio horn player, Vincent DeRosa, who got me into the studio world. He played in films from the 1950s to 1980s. I played with Mr. DeRosa for over 35 years on over 60 projects. The best part of my career was when I was not playing first horn, but playing with legendary horn players from my father’s generation. Those were fun times — they loved me like a son!” From there it was word of mouth, and the horn player began getting recording jobs for television and movies. Composers began to request Thatcher — and he never looked back. “The movie Hook was especially fun since John Williams wrote such great music and I got a screen credit for Sleepers!” the musician noted enthusiastically, adding, “Jerry Goldsmith [with whom he worked on such films as L.A. Confidential] was like a father to me — he was an incredibly talented composer and we had a lot of fun.” He recalls the good old days when full orchestras would record for movies and television. “Today they do what’s called stripped — the strings and woodwinds will record all day, then the brass at night. That’s not very satisfying. Nowadays the musical atmosphere is much less collaborative than it used to be. Now you go in and there are four to five people in the sound booth and it’s very mechanical. Players have become more sound producers than collaborative artists.” Composers he often worked with would write with soloists, especially him, in mind, which was very collaborative. “In the good old days, a composer would write something psychological that would draw the audience into the movie,” Thatcher explained, noting John
Williams’ use of half notes in the famous theme for Jaws, which Thatcher performed. He compared the scary Jaws theme to Prokofiev’s “Battle on the Ice” — it’s worth a listen to note the uncanny similarity. “I was very fortunate that a lot of my predecessors were reaching retirement age; and once I had the opportunity to fill in, I worked very, very hard and made sure they liked what I did and that they didn’t have to wait around for me to do it over again. I saved people a lot of money by getting things done right the first time!” He strikes a balance between his studio gigs and live orchestra performances. Asked whether he prefers playing with an orchestra before a live audience or recording in the studio or sound stage, he responded: “They are two different animals. You get great repertoire from classical works with live music, and from studios if you get great composers and wonderful film, like Field of Dreams. James Horner wrote some beautiful horn parts and solos for me on JFK. In live work, you have one chance to get it right in front of the audience and there’s that kind of pressure, but in the studio, you have to get it right several times . . . and be prepared to play a solo multiple times.” For all his talk of Hollywood and studio work and major symphony orchestras, Thatcher is also quick to praise the fine musicianship of regional SoCal orchestras such as the New West Symphony that consist of many other fine L.A.-based studio and symphony musicians, all very accomplished and in-demand professionals. “I started performing with the New West Symphony about 15 years ago under Boris Brott. When I sit down and play with the New West Symphony players, it’s every bit as satisfying and I have as good a musical experience as I do with other major orchestras I’ve played with, like the London Symphony, L.A. Phil and Cincinnati,” he noted. “A lot of people came out to L.A. to break into entertainment — that’s why the Pasadena and New West symphonies are full of full-time professionals.” He is quick to add that many studio orchestras have also been some of the best he has played with. In case you wonder if his apples don’t fall far from the tree, Thatcher speaks with obvious pride when speaking about his musically talented progeny: Many are singers, one plays clarinet and his wife is a pianist. He even recorded recently with family members. “Christmas at my house,” he beamed, “is like a choir!” v The New West Symphony Orchestra opens the 20182019 season Oct. 6-7. COVER STORY
INSIDE OUT
Vanessa Wallace-Gonzales goes beneath the surface to examine myth, identity, origin and the subconscious.
BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL MOORE
F
rom Assyrian lamassu to BaKongo ritual masks to GrecoRoman sculpture to the ceramics of Mesoamerica, myth and religion as inspiration for art goes back as far as human civilization itself. It is in this primordial realm where origin, consciousness and imagination collide that Vanessa Wallace-Gonzales resides as an artist. Her portraits of glorious and colorful beings formed from bits of painted paper and elaborately decorated with twigs, flowers, seed pods, insect remains and, occasionally, bone, hint at something deep within the human subconscious. They are at once familiar and alien, somewhat shadowy and mysterious, hinting at the divine and yet, with their vivid hues and organic material, very much grounded in flesh and blood. It is reality, from the inside out. “I’m exploring myself and my identity and where things originate from,” says the 26-year-old Ventura native, who is currently wrapping up her term as a guest artist at the CAM Studio Gallery in
Oxnard. Wallace-Gonzales’ exhibition, Artifacts from a Butterfly’s Meconium, will be on display through Oct. 4. The title of the exhibition hints at her inspiration and her process. Meconium is the first fecal matter expelled by a human infant after birth, and by a butterfly after emerging from the chrysalis. For the insect, it is made up of metabolic waste from metamorphosis. It is often red — one of the reasons, perhaps, that the hue is so prominent in Wallace-Gonzales’ work. “I’ve always been attracted to butterflies,” she says. “I admire the physical evidence of their metamorphosis.” She herself raises butterflies and appreciates the energy it takes for the caterpillar to build its chrysalis, the grotesque form it takes during its transformation, the fact that many won’t survive the process at all. And for those that do, materializing in their lovely winged forms is nearly miraculous. “It’s a beautiful reminder of the work it takes to change,” Wallace-Gonzales says. }}

In the ephemeral and precarious nature of the butterfly’s existence she also sees an example of light and dark, life and death. That, too, carries over into her art. “The duality of existence — that always really intrigues me. That’s something I’m constantly exploring in my work.” Wallace-Gonzales was born in Santa Barbara but moved to Ventura when she was 11 years old with her family: her mother, a surgical nurse; her younger brother, now a psychology student in New York City; and her grandmother, who originally came from Texas. Her childhood was filled with plenty of both art and science. “I grew up in a hospital,” she recalls, which gave her a solid understanding of the makeup and functions of the human body — and helped banish any squeamishness. At the same time, she says, “My mom would practice crafts with us. She always believed in being creative.” After graduating from Ventura High School, Wallace-Gonzales studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. While she has mixed feelings about the setting (“It’s a rough city,” she says of Baltimore), she loved MICA. “It was a great place to come into my own,” she explains. “It was interesting to be in this space where you could have these discussions while . . . living in a city that’s still pretty segregated. What a culture shock that was for me! I really had to solidify what I was doing there, what I believed, what I stood for.” She returned to Ventura three years ago and has supported herself by teaching at Vita Art Center (she cites Mary Perez as a mentor) and working at Focus on the Masters. She fell in with the fairly new Oxnard Plain Collective art community, which brought her to the attention of the Carnegie Art Museum. She was offered a residency at the CAM Studio Gallery in May, and her work there has come out of her contemplation of her past and her culture.
“I’m from a family of strong, independent women,” Wallace-Gonzales says. “I’ve been able to witness these traditions that have been passed down, things you inherit.” One of those traditions came from her Southern grandmother, who cooks black-eyed peas and collard greens every New Year’s Eve. Each family member also receives seven dried peas as keepsakes. “Recently I discovered that the greens represented the darker aspects of life, and the bitterness of the past,” Wallace-Gonzales explains, “while the black-eyed peas were sweeter and creamier, symbols of hope for a prosperous future.” The dried peas were intended as “seeds for future prosperity and growth.” “I carry them in my purse,” she says with a laugh. “I always have loose blackeyed peas in my purse and drawers.” Those peas were seeds for her imagination as well. Wallace-Gonzales did some research on peas and greens and their symbolic origin, which she couldn’t pinpoint exactly, but she knows they are very much associated with black culture. This led to musings on her own African American and Latina origins. “Something that’s different with black culture is that there’s a lot of lost tradition,” she explains. “It kind of leaves you on your own. . . . I started exploring my own mythology and identity as a multiracial black/Mexican woman in this world, being brown in this world today.” One question she would ask herself was, “What would it be like if our external selves looked like our internal selves? We feel like we have to hide a lot. What would it be like to live in a world where we were truly exposed? It’s really frightening . . . and really inspiring, too.” In this mythical world where all was exposed, her humanlike “creatures” took shape. She imagines beings that have lost a part of themselves (like aspects of her own culture that can’t be fully deciphered) and replaced them with found objects — hence the plants, animal bits and other embellishments. Some are }}

CELESTIAL BODIES: Wallace-Gonzales intentionally creates her figures to be androgynous, and her backgrounds are deliberately otherworldly. shown with their mirror images, or with multiple profiles, faces and heads. In one piece, the figure appears to be trying on different masks — a literal manifestation of the many “faces” a person may display to the world. In her imagined mythology, these beings all have “abalone eyes,” built from shards of shell she collected as a child (she rediscovered them in a box recently) and which represent “a wisdom and a depth,” she says. “The shell is like acquired wisdom that comes over time.” “These beings are to me metaphorically representing humanity and life itself. And these creatures are collecting as they go: armor, kindness, beauty.” In vibrant colors, all of her works feel very much alive, pulsing with life and vitality. There’s a lot of red: “It’s a very loaded color,” she explains. “I like loaded things.” But there’s a darkness there, too, elements that feel violent or disjointed or oppressive. At times, one gets a sense of skin being literally stripped away. (It’s not shocking to learn that Wallace-Gonzales was very taken with the Body Worlds exhibits.) Wallace-Gonzales acknowledges these facets of her work without apology. “There is a harshness about my work and that’s OK with me,” she says. “My life is not always jolly and happy. I’m trying to make work that encompasses all of it. . . . I want people to feel comfortable with being uncomfortable.” And like myth itself, each piece is wrapped up with a certain amount of mystery. Her figures are intentionally androgynous, and she chooses to leave each piece untitled. “I want to strip away as much distraction as possible,” Wallace-Gonzales explains. “I don’t mind leaving clues, but I want the audience to come to their own conclusions. . . . I don’t want to get in the way of the imagination of the viewer.” The imaginative journey that Wallace-Gonzales takes her viewers on is a heady one, full of color and texture, teeming with elements that astound with their beauty, occasionally disturb, but always intrigue and confound. Through her work we delve with her into her subconscious, and thus explore our own. What parts of ourselves are we hiding? What elements of the divine and grotesque beckon to be revealed? What myths and meanings do we collect, as individuals and as a species? There’s something for all of us to learn through this process. Ultimately, however, it is a very personal exploration of the self. Wallace-Gonzales merely gives us the privilege of joining her. “It really comes down to exploring identity and the many layers of self — all the layers that are me, and that are parts of everything,” she says. “What could you make if you allowed yourself to be more vulnerable?” She admits that the process of becoming vulnerable and relinquishing control was not an easy one. But as she finished the works she made for her current exhibit, she found a renewed strength and sense of self. “I was feeling good. I’m going to take up space. I’m here.” v Vanessa Wallace-Gonzales’ work will be on exhibit at CAM Studio Gallery through Oct. 4, with a closing reception taking place 5-9 p.m. Follow her on Instagram at @livingrelic and at her website, vanessawallace-gonzales.com.

FACIAL EXPRESSION: All of her works are untitled, so as not to “get in the way of the imagination of the viewer,” but faces, profiles and masks recur frequently. By combining them in manifold ways, Wallace-Gonzales hints at the multidimensional nature of humanity, and the numerous personalities that lurk within a single individual.

THE NATURE OF
COLONIZED SPACE Artist, professor and ultrarunner Luke Matjas heads straight into the tension between the environment and civilization. BY EMILY DODI | PORTRAIT BY JONATHAN CHU
P
roust had a madeleine. Artist Luke Matjas had dinosaur books. In Proust’s famous work Remembrance of Things Past, a taste of a madeleine cookie triggers a flood of memories. For Matjas, the same thing happened when, after moving away for college, his parents brought him the box of books that he had adored as a child. Seeing them again brought back a wash of emotion. “Those books and images were so familiar,” Matjas remembers. “I loved them as a kid.” Matjas says that seeing the box again was his “madeleine moment.” They continue to be a source of inspiration to this day. There’s something about the past — the long ago and faraway past — that has always intrigued Matjas, who is also a professor and the chair of the art program at California State University, Channel Islands, as well as a graphic designer. “Thirty-five years ago, I was a clueless kid, digging holes in the badlands of Orange County, Southern California’s suburban outback,” he once wrote. “This was the primeval world of the 1970s.” Meanwhile, a huge housing development was going up all around him. Human encroachment and the interfacing of mankind and nature, which he calls the “nature of colonized space,” became an integral theme in his art. It is that push and pull between contrasts, like nature and man, solitude and community, order and chaos, that resonates in his work to this day. The Great Rock Mass Is Called the Earth, Matjas’ solo exhibition at the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard in 2016, featured digital prints of California wildlife existing in landscapes not altogether au naturel. They are ablaze in color and rich in detail, and although there isn’t a human to be found, mankind’s footprint is all over the place. Discarded items — oil cans, traffic cones, a trashed recliner — vie for space with the animals, plants, rocks and the air itself. The contrast between the natural and the man-made is clear, but so is a sense of fun. “I like to use humor,” says Matjas, who calls his style representational. “I use recognizable things,” he adds. “I don’t like to do obtuse work. I want to bring people along for the ride.” The next stop on the ride will be an exhibition at the McNish Gallery at Oxnard College in November, featuring drawings and digital media work. As of now, the working title is Conversations With My Spirit Animals. Underlying much of the art is a theme of renewal, influenced by recent wildfires and their }}

aftermath. The ability of animals to connect with a changing environment figures strongly in the pieces, too, whether the change was caused by fire or the housing crisis. For instance, Matjas is contemplating creating a piece inspired by a news story about coyotes who lived in a house that had been foreclosed. Matjas envisions drawing a connection between the “house coyotes” and a group of coyotes he later saw in the wild. “It would be a tribute to them.” He continues to gather inspiration from nature and books, including old science textbooks, as well as from unlikely places. “I get as much inspiration from Home Depot,” Matjas says, referring to the store’s vast inventory of “objects [used] to contain nature.” A Home Depot run might spark his imagination, but it is a completely different kind of run that really fuels his creativity. Matjas is an ultrarunner, which means he runs long distances. Very long distances. “[Ultrarunning] is life-changing,” he explains. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” He participates in ultra marathons, including a recent 100-mile one that spanned the entire length of the San Gabriel Mountains. The course stretched from Wrightwood to Alta Dena, with 19,000 feet in ascent and 23,000 feet in descent, mostly on trails. “That was a wild experience,” he recalls. “There are 200 people [running the course] but you are alone a lot. To be immersed out there is like [being on] a modern-day spirit quest. You’re by yourself for miles and miles.” Perhaps it’s that solitude that made him realize how much we all rely on others. “I’ll be on mile 74 and I’ll see my family.” (His family often greets him at points along the course.) “I’m so grateful to them.” He can’t stop to talk but their support means the world to him. “I’ll say ‘See you in eight hours,’ and run back into the night.” He adds, “It’s weird when you’re moving all the time. It’s very meditative. I’ll see an odd tree and think, ‘Wow, that’s cool.’ Before you know it you’re thinking about it for an hour.” He doesn’t wear headphones while he runs to better immerse himself in nature. “It’s primal to listen,” he says. Running is a feast for the eyes, too. Natural beauty is in abundance and there are plenty of interesting man-made things to be found, like a Domino’s Pizza name tag and a box of drill bits. Both objects found their way into his work, and the handwriting on the box inspired a typeface that Matjas created for the exhibit. One “find” might stand out above all others. “I was going up a canyon and I saw an animal about 30 yards away. It was small but catlike. Then I saw a long tail. It was a juvenile mountain lion.” The animal jumped into the bushes, but Matjas could see the cat’s green eyes watching him as he ran past. It was a thrilling moment for Matjas, who admits to being obsessed with mountain lions. (His work “Study of Landscape Connectivity in Urban Island Environments (P-18)” is an ode to a mountain lion.) From that suburban kid who dug in the dirt to the artist who unearths inspiration anywhere, Matjas says that he hopes his work will spark our imagination. One can imagine Matjas running through the California wilderness, a man in motion. How perfect that his artv work makes us stop in our tracks. http://www.lukematjas.com
